Welcome Newbee

Marty,

What type of research have you done? Have you accessed the www.familysearch.org website or is your research mostly oral history from family members?

The key is to provide as much information as you have to the group and in that way you will receive the greatest response.

When you give names, give the complete names, given name and surname or both surnames if possible along with the dates of birth or baptism, marriage and death if available. Where they were born, state, city or town, rancho or ranchos, who did they marry and when.

The way you have stated it below is very vague, not enough information provided. What is the first name for your grandmother's father, --------Arroyo? What is the first or given name for your grandmother Hernandez? What is the time period as in what years?

If you have not used www.familysearch.org do you know how to use it? If not here is a link that is located in the files/research section of Nuestros Ranchos, http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/14638 This will tell you how to find your nearest family history center.

Good Luck Marty

Hi everyone,
I am new here so bear with me if I ask to many questions... I joined the group about 2 weeks ago and put out 4 surnames that I am researching... and I want to thank those that answered me... I am reading the information that you are sending among yourself's and getting a general idea how the group works...

I am researching in and around Fresnillo in Zacatecas, the surnames that I am very interested in right now, are:
Arroyo----------- (my Grandmother's father)
Hernandez----- (my Grandmother's mothers maiden name)

What do I need to do or where can I go to find these surnames... or is there anyone in the group that has any surnames of Arroyo or Hernandez... I have the names of their spouses...which may led us to a family link.

Thanks

Marty

Nuestros Ranchos Members

Hi Helyn ,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me yes, it's a very good feeling when you get to connect the dots and little by little you start to see the design of it all . I started this search of mine roughly 25 yrs ago and within the last several months I've found several family members . I'm currently living in Monterrey , Mexico . I came here 5 yrs ago to spend one year doing research on the family line . I got a little side tracked and started a telecommunications business here and long story short two years later I still hadn't done any family searching . When I sold my shares of the biz I was heading home ( home being Marina de Rey , Ca. ) I was invited to start an organic fertilizer company and well , here I still am however I did start the search and like I said in the last several months I've done ok here with past family members but I never knew about the members that came from Zacatecas until recently .

Thanks again for your kind words ,
Welester

Conquistadores

Does anyone know where I can get a book or a biographies on the following conquistadores who served with Hernando Cortez. They recieved Coat of Arms on the battlefield. Conquistador Juan del Camino or Diego del Camino both were relatives. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sending for Records from San Miguel El Alto

The LDS gave me an answer on the missing files from 1865 San Miguel El Alto. They said that either they had been overlooked or had been destroyed, but that I may write the church to see if they might have the missing 1865 records. She said I might also try the civil records, but the civil records did not start until after 1865! For those of you looking for records in San Miguel El Alto, please be aware that the film for baptisms 1865 is not complete. Only the first six months of 1865 are contained on the film. LDS said I might also try confirmations.

Now for my questions. Does anyone know how or where to request historical records from the parish of San Miguel El Alto? Is there a cost involved and how much? If there is a cost, will an international money order work to send funds? I have sent for records in the States and also in the UK, but never for Mexico. Since my Spanish is limited at best, is there a form in Spanish that I may use? Last but not least, at what age were confirmations done in Mexico?

Thank you for any help. My aim is to track down Julian Alviso where ever he may be hiding! He is pretty good at this hide and seek game. Sooner or later he has to get tired of playing and come out of hiding.

Confirmations

Maureen,

Linda is correct in that confirmation records only list the names of those being confirmed and their Godparents. That was the requirement per the diocese, not by the parish or local priest. In the 1600's, 1700's and the early 1800's it was per the decree of the Spanish court or La cedula real. Usually the bishop would travel to all the parishes to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. It might take the bishop a few years to make it back to each parish again so you will find confirmation records anywhere from every 2 years to every 7-10 years. In some instances they might have to go to another church to be confirmed other than their own parish if the Bishop could not come to their town. In that case you would look in neighboring parishes for confirmation records but I wouldn't necessarily advise you to do that because the information you glean from that will be minimal.

Dear Linda:
Thanks for the heads up. I can only hope that San Miguel might have more than just names. What a shame. However, the marriage and baptismal records for Mexico are just wonderful. I have sent for Ohio marriage records and all it lists is the bride, groom and date. No way to tell if you have the right ones by matching up the parents names. For Mexico, we have so much more and even grandparents for baptismals as well as sometimes an aunt or uncle as a sponsor for a bonus, then their age too!

Thanks Smiley,

Now that you sent this I think we have driven this route once before, many many years ago and it was very narrow and very precarious due to the steep cliffs and dropoffs and very, very scary. That was long before I got into genealogy and paid attention to names of towns and their locations relative to our hometown of Nochistlan, Zac.

Cuquio, Jalisco

Hola Fernando,

Translating "comparecer"

I have found also the word "comparecio," preceding someone's name and
translate that to mean: appears (person's name), meaning they appear before
the judge. So, in a particular civil record, it would say in such and such
town (En el Ciudad de --), on such and such day (a los cinco dias del mes de
--) , before such and such judge (ante mi --), appears Jose Salazar
(comparecio Jose Salazar). Anyways, that is what I have been translating it
as, comparecer, meaning to appear and comparecio, meaning he appears, so "el
compareciente" would tranlate literally as "the appearing," or the one
appearing before the judge. They also might write "se presente" before the
person's name, which literally translates as "presented himself," meaning
"presented" and the name of the person who was presenting himself before the
judge.

I have also come across the term, "exponente," before someone's name, which
is a legal term, translating easily as "exponent," but not so easily in
meaning. The legal interpretation for many of the terms in civil records
can be found in law dictionaries. Accoring to such a dictionary, an
"exponent" is an advocate or the one who goes before the judge on someone's
behalf. In civil birth records, the exponent can be the father of the
child, but not always, and it can be a friend or close relative of the
family, but not always. Later in the record, it may state the father of the
child is the exponent, but sometimes it doesn't and merely says who the
mother is, particularly if the child is an "hijo/a natural, though I have
also found records that give both parents names for an hijo/a natural.

A lesson learned: Not only have I found it wise to hold off drawing any
conclusions about a particular ancestor from these records, but I have found
it helpful to read other records on the same microfilm, in order to see if
the names in my record of interest are also in other records involving
people completely unrelated to my ancestor. When I do see names given
repeatedly in other records I then deduce that they may have worked in the
courthouse and were called upon to act as witnesses, etc. for a number of
cases. Gathering as much information as possible on any given ancestor
without making any assumptions about them, simply stating what I have found,
is what I have very painfully learned to be the wisest course of action in
my research, especially if it involves sharing what I have found with other
family members who are quick to draw premature conclusions and do not let
them go, despite repeated, frustrating attempts at correcting them!

reports

Hi everyone, I have finally submitted some reports,
they're not much, but it's a start=) I have mostly
obtained the info from census, marriage, baptism, etc.
films from the family history library. I may be going
to Mascota during 2007, so if anyone has any tips on
what would be most useful (I'm guessing that going to
the church would be a good place to start??), I would
really appreciate it! This is the link to my reports

...Howdy Everyone...just wanted to let ya know that I finally (with some help, of course) have placed my Jalisco Connections folder here:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/15363

...here is a link to my photos album, which I will be adding to today. We have a couple of Posadas to attend, so I will post some of those too. I will be adding some photos of our reccent outing for the perfect "Flor de Pena" for all of our "navedenas."

Just wondering how many of ya'll have this custom still being here in the United States? Are there any other customs that you have from your past, that you keep going within your family for this Christmas season? Like all the "mujeres" getting together to make the homemade tamales and of course, all the "placticas" don't hurt either.

During this time, I will be adding many more names of all the new family members born thru out the year. My family doesn't even realize I take very good genealogical notes during such occasions. Just curious about others "traditions" is all. Hope to add lots more research after I get the rolls that I have on order at our local LDS center.

...Until the next time, I wish you all a very blessed Christmas and New Year. May we all help each other in breaking down some of those many "brickwalls" in order to find those all elusive ancestors in the year to come...

The book I have is titled "Fundadores de Nueva Galicia". Perhaps your

authored others. I checked my book and I see some Alvarados on page 30, but
they are from Guadalajara. I purchased my book through Borderlands

Greatings . In my search wile reading my grandfathers birth certificate i came acros the word -ELCOMPARECIENDE,this was in front of my great grandmothers name i assumed this was a name so after weeks of looking came up with nothing. Elcompareciendo is the person who is giving the information or presenting the child to the registro civil. maybe you all knew this but if not now you do. This information came from my cousin in Guadalajara.

Zaldivar

For the genealogy of the Vicente Zaldivar that came to COahuila/Nuevo Leon see my gedcom on this site.
This Vicente Zaldivar was the son of Juan Guerra Reza and Magdalena Zaldivar Mendoza and therefore was the nephew of Vicente Zaldivar Mendoza who participated in the New MExico expedition of his uncle Onate.Vicente Zaldivar married Maria Sosa, daughter of Alonso Farias and Ana Sosa ( daughter of Betriz Navarro Rodriguez and Alonso ALbernoz de Sosa - New Mexico expedition)). Ana Zaldivar daughter of
Vicente Zaldivar married Abrosio de Cepeda Fuente and lived in COahuila probably the Saltillo arrea.
Ana Zaldivar and Ambrosio Cepeda Fuente had at least 7 children that I know of.

Dear Colleagues,

El Universal announced yesterday that plans are in the
works to cut the AGN's budget by over 50%. The staff
that we have become friendly with and who have helped
us over the years would surely face layoffs as a
consequence. Cuts in services will surely make our
work more difficult.

If the news is accurrate, then I think we need to get
together--online, at the AHA, in our departments--and
figure out a way to petition the new administration to
reconsider the cuts. An alliance among scholars based
in and outside of Mexico might carry some weight.

I thought I would send this out to open a dialogue and
see if anyone had any ideas.

31 Jan 2007

Many in the group have already complied, but many have not. If you've
already submitted your genealogy just relax. . .you're a life member of
the Nuestros Ranchos group.

For those that haven't submitted their work I get a little nervous when
it comes time to remove members from the list. I wish everyone would
just buckle down and send in their representative genealogies showing
their connection to Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes.

This is the second to the last notice I'm going to send out. I'll
probably send out the last notice right after the new year. Then
suddenly on 01 Feb 2007 the group should show 30-50 less members. Please
don't let this be you. On that day or shortly thereafter I will be
deleting the memberships of all who have not done
one of the following things:

1) emailed moderator@nuestrosranchos.org with a request for the specific
amount of time you'll need beyond 31 Jan 2007 to submit your genealogy*.

*Note you might be a new researcher with very little or nothing to
submit. In this case you'll be able to meet this requirement by sending
in a short account of your family's "Oral History" relating your roots
to Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes.

2) send moderator@nuestrosranchos.org an email with your
"representative" tree showing your connection to Jalisco, Zacatecas,
and/or Aguascalientes. [Note: not your gedcom is not required, or every
document you ever discovered or your whole life's genealogical work,
just a simple "representative" tree showing your connection to our area
of research]

Please don't wait until the last minute. Email me soon so we can start
making up your folder in the private to members only area of the group.

*2) Enviar a **moderator@nuestrosranchos.org

exclusivamente a "solo miembros".*

Liendo and De la Rosa

Hi there Josie ,

I did a quick serch in www.familysearch.org and found 58 Liendos in Coahuila ..... 22 in Tamaulipas ..... 10 in Jalisco , also note that I found 0 in Zacatecas and 0 in Aguascaliente .

This does'nt mean that there aren't any in those states , like I said it was a quick search . If you want enter into the site clik on the International Genealogical Index , then clik on region ( Mexico ) clik on the state ( whichever you prefer ) .
Now , go to where it says First Name and put an asterisk * and where it says Last Name , put Liendo . Hope this helps alittle .

Welester

Guadalajara District/City Limits

I was looking for my grandmother's civil birth record on microfilm for the
Guadalajara District, because my mother had said her mother was born in
Guadalajara on May 25th, 1907. However, I didn't find my grandmother's
birth record. My mother said that her mother's family, Alberto and
Francisca Martin del Campo, lived on a farm in Guadalajara and that was
where her mother was born. So, I just got my Jalisco map in the mail and I
have been checking for a listing of the municipios in Jalisco and see that
Guadalajara is both a city and a district, or municipio, all in itself. Am
I understanding that correctly? Like in California, San Francisco is both a
city and a county. So, now I'm thinking that, if they lived on a farm a
hundred years ago, that farm may not even be there anymore. It may now be
city. What I'm wondering is if cities in Mexico have city limits, like they
do here and, if so, I'm wondering if the Guadalajara city limits have been
expanded as the city has grown. What I'm trying to determine is that the
reason my grandmother's birth record was not in the Guadalajara district
civil registry, is perhaps because even though they lived "in Guadalajara,"
it may have been in another district, at least back in 1907 when my
grandmother was born. Would anyone know about this? My mother is going to
call her aunt to ask where the family farm was, but she may not know about
any boundary changes that may have occurred. I hope all of this makes
sense, basically I'm trying to determine which district my grandmother was
born in, so I can then order the microfilm for that one and, hopefully, find
her birth record in it.
