Lobato

The Lobato's were from Sombrete, Zacatacas can someone tell me where this is? And where would I find records earlier than 1690's?

Esparza lines

My grandfather told me that our two Esparza lines came from Aguascalientes before entering Huanusco, Zacatecas. I was researching this Esparza line who the patriach is Lope Ruiz de Esparza who came to Mexico in Feb 8, 1593. There is a film named (Catalogo de Pasajeros a Indias (Vol. III - #2.633) where it states this information. I believe all Esparzas in that area came from him since there wasnt any Esparza active during the conquest that I have found. Maybe there's a connection from mine to them? Can anyone help? Thanks. -Daniel

Group Etiquette/

Okay folks listen up!

One day someone is going to desperately want to search for a specific
email by using the search engine. In order for the search engine to work
to this advantage we need to give the proper names for the subjects of
the emails.

1) If you are replying to an email and are changing the subject please
change the subject accordingly. You can say something like: Census
Records - was: "Introduction"

2) Yes and lets start getting just a bit more specific about the
subject. One day we might need to look for someones introduction and
come to find 100 messages with the subject being "Introduction" why not
lets say: "Joseph Puentes: Introduction"

3) Also let's try to keep in mind what each of the three email lists are
for:

research@nuestrosranchos.org is for messages that are specifically for
research in our area: Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes.
_Messages related to genealogy but not about Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or
Aguascalientes should not go to this list. _

general@nuestrosranchos.org is for brief discussions about genealogy
_outside our area of research_ OR messages about _other topics_ that the
group might find useful including those that are related to Jalisco,
Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes. IF IF someone starts a conversation
about genealogy research related to Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or
Aguascalientes on this list then let's all try to move the conversation
as soon as possible back to research@nuestrosranchos.org

announce@nuestrosranchos.org is for announcements.

thanks for your help with this,

joseph

Hello joseph,

I would like to take this opportunity to say thanx as well to you and to Kitty , Alicia John and Enriquie . Sometimes you forget just how much work is involved in maintaining a smooth operation , kinda like the duck theory , you see the duck on the surface of the lake gliding ever so smoothly but, what you don't see are his feet underneath paddling away .

Thank you all !

Fernando,

Volunteers with Tech Experience Needed

Looking for some tech-savvy volunteers!

As you all know, Nuestros Ranchos is an all volunteer group. There is no cost to be a member largely because of this volunteer effort and Joseph's generosity in paying for the server space that the site rests on.

We would like to "spread the wealth" a bit with the maintenance and development of the website to make sure that it can stay up and running when one of us is not available.

The site currently runs on a content management system called Drupal and since it was built over a year ago, it is time for an upgrade. I am looking to upgrade the software of the site and the look/layout to make it easier to read and navigate.

In order to take on this task, I need a volunteer or two who is familiar with PHP and/or CSS and is willing to pitch in some of their spare time. There is no deadline for this project so it would be a help as you can basis. Please contact me if you are interested. You can do so through the personal contact form by clicking on my username below this message on the nuestrosranchos.org site.

Hi, I'm looking for genealogical and biographical information regarding
Victoriano Navarro, his parents Domingo Navarro & María Encarnación
Cepeda, and his grandparents José María Navarro & Fernanda Saravia and
Rafael Cepeda & Rosa Saucedo.
Victoriano Navarro was from Ocotlán, Jalisco. He and his son José
Guadalupe moved to Coahuila.
On 1835 he married Victoriana Elizondo (widow, great-grandmother of
President Madero). They had three children: Ma. Refugio, Ma. Isabel and
Raymundo.
After Victoriana died, he married her niece Ma. Manuela de la Garza and
they had six children: Ma Isabel, Victoriana, Serapia, Luís Manuel (4th
Mayor of Torreón), Beatriz and Gilberto.
He died on 1873.
Y-DNA testing indicates this Navarro lineage belongs to Haplogroup
R1b1c, which originated among the Cro-Magnon men who populated Europe
about 30 thousand years ago.
I'd appreciate any information on these families.

Book: Fundadores de Nueva Galicia

Hello Juanita,

You may have asked, but I have a hard time keeping up with my e-mail. I
subscribe in digest mode and sometimes miss things, or I just don't check
for several days and forget. I'm the one who needs to apologize!

Anyway, back to your question. I purchased my book through Borderlands
Bookstore. They are based in San Antonio, TX. Phone number (210)
432-6043. I don't know which libraries have a copy and would do
interlibrary loans, but I seem to recall Joseph has done Worldcat searches
for books. Perhaps he can help us out here. I think that catalog searches
multiple libraries at once and you can see which libraries have a copy and
proceed from there.

Good luck on your research!

Maria

History of Coffee production in Mexico

I have been trying to research Rancho Ojo de Agua near San Miguel El Alto and Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco. I am looking through the LDS film in the 1820-1832 births for San Miguel El Alto. A substantial amount of births are from Rancho Ojo de Agua. Well, in any event, I came across a paper that digs into the history of coffee production and other crops in Mexico, please see link below:

http://www.ic.nanzan-u.ac.jp/LATIN/1albagonzales.pdf

There are references to books used to research at the end of the paper. I thought it might be an interesting piece of history to share.

Photos from my trip to Mexico

I have just uploaded photos from my trip to Mexico last month. I have put them in the Albums section:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/15543

There is a photo in there of the cornerstone of the first school in Totatiche, Jalisco which was opened in August of 1725 and apparently the teacher was an ancestor of mine by the name of Joseph Cayetano Grano.

There is also a photo of my father with the town historian (cronista) Estaban Valdes Salazar, to whom many of you donated money for his projects.

There are more photos (not necessarily of historical value) on my family website at:

To Juanita Delgado: Delgados in book "Fundadores de Nueva Galicia"

>
> Hello Juanita,

Sorry for the length of time it took me to reply, but this book does not
have an index and I cannot do quick lookups. That is why I didn't make an
offer to the group and was only able to respond previously when the page
number was quoted.
Anyway, here is what I found:

Pages 6 to 7 - El Padron de Tetlan en 1541.
- DELGADILLO, Francisco. Natural del Val de Santo Domingo en Toledo. Hijo
legitimo de Pedro Cuadrado y de Maria Villaverde. Se caso con hija de
conquistador.

- DELGADO, Juan. Originario de Sevilla. Hijo legitimo de Francisco Moron y
de Maria Sanchez. Servia de Interprete. Caso y tuvo 3 hijos

Pages 132 to 133 - Familias de Tlaltenango 1626-1695.

There may be names that I missed, because without an index, I could only
scan as best as I could without reading the book in its entirety. I hope
the above helps!

Maria

Confusion: Submitting Genealogies

there seems to be some confusion both with the new members and the old
members so I am going to attempt to clear it up.

To be a life time member of the group all you have to do is submit a
representative tree _once_ (only once) and nothing else will be required
of you ever (and ever).

So I don't want you all to think I'm going to be asking for more and
more and more. Just meet the initial requirement and you're in, end of
story.

HOWEVER (however's are just like but's) however nothing says that you
all can't go wild and VOLUNTARILY upgrade and submit new files to your
folders. That is strictly on a volunteer basis.

On a related note I would ask you one favor please. If you have sent in
your genealogy and are now set for life then please wait until Feb 14th
or later before upgrading or submitting new genealogies. I'm going to
have my hands extremely full checking everyones folder and see who has
and hasn't submitted genealogies so I can be ready for the big cut on
Feb 1, 2007

I hope that clears things up. Also if you are unsure if you have or
haven't submitted a genealogy (hmmm) well here is how to find out: go to
nuestrosranchos.org and log in, then go to the files and under members
genealogies see if you have a folder in that long list. If you do the
click on it and see if you have a genealogy file/report in there or a
link to your online work. If you have something in the folder as in a
file or report you're set if not but have submitted a gedcom you're set.
If you haven't submitted a report/file and have no link to your online
work or have not sent in your gedcom then you're falling short of
meeting the requirement and will be unsubscribed on 01 Feb 2007

email me at makas@nc.rr.com if you have any questions but IF you know
you've submitted something just confirm it for yourself.

Bancroft Library in Berkely, Calif

Dear Ranchos members,

Tomorrow the Northern California group of Ranchos is going on a Genealogical tour of the Bancroft Library in Berkeley Calif. Maria Cortez has made arrangements with the curator of the Western Americana collection for a tour, thank you Maria.

If anyone has a specific request or lookup, please let us know so we may put it on our radar. Sorry for the late notice, should have sent it sooner. We leave early in the morning, that means you must submit your request by this evening and we will try to accomodate your request.

Genealogy Pitfalls

On the subject of building accurate, easy to follow pedigrees:

The following is an excerpt from the latest newsletter from Pat Gooldy of Ye Olde Genealogy Shoppe in Indiana:

"One of the pitfalls in searching huge databases is the peril of finding a name and assuming that is the individual for which you are searching when indeed that gentleman is not the right age, not in the right place, and indeed, is not related to your fellow at all. That only leads to mythology, not genealogy, and many miffed and confused descendants wondering why they can not follow the scenario for the family you have built. You are building not a pedigree, but a nightmare for your descendants.

Genealogy means many small steps taken in the effort to build a pedigree. Each step must be tested in many ways to be sure it is not a mis-step. The larger the database, the more options you have, but also the more risk of making a mistake".

Creating Standard Genealogy Reports - Como crear reportes estandares de genealogia

(Espanol sigue abajo)

I have noticed that many of the new members' genealogy files in the files section are not in a standard genealogy report format. That makes understanding the information very difficult and therefore takes away from the value of the group, which is to share information.

As this is a group for serious genealogy researchers, I think it behooves every member to understand and use (as much as possible) standard genealogy reports when sharing genealogy information. A good place to start for those that do not yet have sophisticated genealogy software (such as FamilyTree Maker or Legacy Family Tree) would be to dowload PAF, which is available for free from familysearch.org. You can download free user manuals from the site as well:

http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?cat…

Cindy's list has a comprehensive list of genealogy software along with articles that compare and review the software:

http://www.cyndislist.com/software.htm

== ESPANOL ==

http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?cat…

Land Grants

Mickey was very kind to ask George Ryskamp for his input about Bill
Figueroa's question. He is very busy right now making preparations for a
trip to Spain and he said:

He would search the Argena Website, He said early land grants would be
under "Tierras". He thinks that you would find the info in both the

Ayotlan, Santa Rita, Jalisco - more photos

Hi Patria & anyone interested in Ayotlan,
I have created a Ayotlan folder under Jalisco. I have posted 1 photo of Ayotlan so far and will be putting another 40 photos or so to share with all of you when I get an opportunity. These photos are from a trip that I took with my husband and my mother to Ayotlan back in 2004.

Patricia -

Thanks for that great article with all those photos. My husband's ancestors, the Villalobos, Morones, and Peres were from Ayo El Chico, now Ayotlan. I printed out the article and most of the photos for him.

Dear Group--

I came across this site on Wednesday--

http://www.stormlake.com/mexico/index.htm

which shows Santa Rita, Jalisco, where my husband was
born. Apparently a delegation of people came from
Iowa in 2005 to visit. I know that there are a few
people who are researching in Ayotlan, which is also
featured, so this might be of interest to them.

On our trip to Santa Rita in December, I took quite a
few pictures. If you would be interested in seeing
what the land looks like around Santa Rita and this
part of los Altos, send me an email at
canprin@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,
Patricia Diane Godinez
