Teresa de Herrera y Quijas

Does anyone know who the parents are to Teresa de Herrera Quijas married to Domingo Martin(es) de Sotomayor. They were married Marriage: 25 APR 1666 Aguascalientes, Mexico

Hi Simona,

Theresa de Herrera y Quijas is my 11th great grandmother and based on her name, I'm guessing she's the daughter of Captain don Pedro de Quijas Escalante and Catalina de Saldaña, daughter of Antonio de Alcaraz and Leonor Herrera de Saldaña.

Chris

Don Pedro de Quijas Escalante married to Catalina de Saldaña, are my 7th great grandparents through Phelipa. They were the first I looked at as they have Herrera in their line. The timeline is right. I have 14 children for them.
Thanks for the info Chris!

Hi Danny,
Based on this marriage of 1722, I'm guessing Manuela Mireles was born about 1700. There is a well known Mireles family from Nuevo Leon. The Domingo Mireles could correspond to Domingo de Castro Mireles Caballero who did use the name Domingo de Mireles. He lived in the same time frame as your Manuela Mireles. I don't believe he was old enough to be the father, but, it's possible he is the brother. I'm not really that familiar with these Nuevo Leon families, but, I have seen his named mention on several genealogies compiled by John Inclan. You might want to check those.

Hello Nuestros Ranchos Forum,

I'm trying to locate the parents of Manuela Mireles and Pedro de Arias.
There children were from San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas, but these people
got married in a place called Nuevo Leon, i don't know how close that is or
where it' is. it says they live on the rancho of Domingo Mireles. Does
anyone know who Domingo Mireles is, i'm thinking he might be her father or
relative.

Hola Grupo y  Buenas Tardes,
Any help with my ancestors (??) is greatly appreciated.  All info is from IGI and films, and as far as I can tell ends here:
Domingo Antonio Rubio    b.  about 1736 Puerto de Sta Maria, Sevilla, Espana
His parents:  Juan Rubio   b. ??   and Magdelena Godoy   b.  ??  I assume in Spain.
Petra de Anaya Villagran  b. 05/22/1740  Huichapan, Hidalgo, Mexico
Her parents:   Miguel Anaya Villagran   b. about 1698  Huichapan, Hidalgo
                        Angela Alcantara Navarrete   b. ??

Earlier I had solicited help with the situation of determing between two Marcos Sepulbeda born 1695 and 1696 (with different parents named).  I knew my Marcos de Sepulbeda married Maria Margarita Franco on 02/08/1717 in Tepatitlan de Morelos, Jalisco and ordered the film, only  to discover that no parents are named at all--in any of the entries from that book!   Imagine my  disappointment that padrinos were named, but no parents.   Is this an unusual situation, or something to be expected with older records?     Thanks so much for your condsideration.

The padrinos sometimes provide a clue. I believe that I descend from a marcos sepulveda, or at least a sibling of one so I will search my paperwork this week and get back to you.
I found the same thing about the older books but there are less people the farther you go back and it is easier to go through older paperwork like trials, Wills, land ownership to look for clues.

Alice,

I feel your pain at not finding the names of the bride and groom's parents on the marriage records. Now it only means you have to get more creative and find the birth of the grandchildren which will surely have the names of the parents on the baptismal records.

For some reason, there are certain rolls of film for certain periods that don't include the parent's names. I don't know if it was by decree from Spain, from the church or just lazy Parish scribe or priest but it seems to occur in specific time / year spans.

Hello Alicia,
It's funny how genealogy has the ability to bring you up just as quickly as you're let down.
The pain I was avoiding was the one I feel in my pocket from ordering so many films!  Since there were two contemporaries with the same name, I thought I'd order the sure thing-the marriage film of the correct Marcos and get the parents of both. Now the only thing I can think of is to order a film I found that contains two of the couple's children, and hope the grandparents are named.   Although, it wouldn't be the first time I've found grandparents omitted!
This little dip in the road was made up by the discovery of my gggggrandfather and mother in the 1766 Santander padron.  I was searching one page at a time and accidently scrolIed rapidly down, skipping too many pages.   Yet before me on page 47 were my ancestors.  It was an incredible feeling that I was now privy to their actual address, complete with a map!  It didn't further my generational search, but it was terrific none the less.  Thanks for your  response and wish me luck.  Alice

Alice

Alicia Carrillo,

from your tocaya Alicia, which is Alice in Spanish.

Alice

Hello Linda,
I really don't know; Angela Alcantara Navarrette is newly acquired family.   Her marriage to Miguel Anaya Villagran on 01/13/1719 was in Huichapan, Hidalgo; however, I haven't found any definitve birth info on her.   The only birth entry I've found states about 1705, possibly Huichapan, but the same entry states marriage about 1723 and doesn't have a film number, so I don't have much confidence in it.   Alice

Hola Ruben y Lety

mygenes2000. Lety and Ruben.

Hi Stephanie,

Do you know where in Mexico Lucas Martin and ____Gregoria are from? Also, are you sure about Gregoria being a last name? It's more of a first name. Also, do you know who Isabel Martin married and where?

Chris

Comentario

hi chris nice to meet you im stephanie. my information is gleaned from the following source citations as evidenced.. that was furnished through ancestry.com and through family search. it was entitled Jalisco, Mexico, Civil Registration Deaths, 1856-1987 there it was listed parents as a lucas martin and or a gregoria woman. Lucas Martin
1809–
BIRTH MARCH 1809 • San Francisco De Asis , Jocotepec, Jalisco,Mexico
DEATH UNKNOWN • Mexico also another source of citation was through family search and here is link to it as follows: Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic...Church Records, 1590-1979 Jocotepec San Francisco de Asís Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1854-1857 regarding one of the children .

Comentario

Stephanie,

was Isabel Martin married in America or Mexico and do you know who she married. Also, Gregoria woman sounds to me like Gregoria is the first name. Also, if this is on a death certificate, I'm not sure I would put a lot of faith in it. it sounds like they really didn't know.

Dear Stephanie,

In order to help you, I would need to know how to access the documents that you do have on Isabel Martin to look for clues on how to proceed. How do you know her father is Lucas Martin? How do I see that record to look for more clues for identifying her parents and grandparents? Unfortunately, Without this information I wouldn't be able to help you.

Good Luck,

R.A. Ricci

PS does Isabel have any siblings? What information do you have on Isabel and her husband?

Comentario

Dear Stephanie,

I need more information in order to help you. Where did you get the information that Isabel's parents are Lucas Martin and a woman surnamed Gregoria? I would start by reviewing every word in the record that gave you this information looking for clues.

I took a look at the indexed/extracted records for Isabel Martin, and her family. With the limited info in this post I was unable to find any information on them.

I then thought of looking at the info in your file to see if info there would lead to them. I started with Cresencio Martinez and Felicitas Coronado. I found some errors and omissions in your data, as well as some inconsistencies.

I was using Ancestry.com (Library edition).

I found six children for Francisco Coronado and Emilia Sanchez. Felicitas Coronado was not born 19 Oct 1896, but instead 18 May 1898, in Villa de Cos, Zacatecas. Her brother Francisco was born 19 Oct 1896, Villa de Cos. The Villa de Cos civil records are indexed at Ancestry.com so these are easy to find.

I could not duplicate your info on Cresencio Martinez's birth. I found a Cresencio Martinez born 19 Apr 1893, in Teoquitlan de Corona, Jalisco, son of Jose Maria Martinez and Maria Valenda (not Veleida). This record is in the volume for 1893, image 66.

I found a marriage for a Cresencio Martinez and Maria Felix Coronado on 4 Nov 1914 in Villa de Cos (marriages vol 1909-15, image 417, and vol 1875-1950, images 729-39). Maria Felix's parents are Francisco Coronado and Emilia Sanchez. Cresencio's are different, however: Jose Maria Martinez and Silveria Aguiñaga. Since the date and location are consistent with your info, I think this may be the right marriage. I can see that Felicitas could have been turned into Maria Felix (this could be just an error by the registrar), but I cannot explain the difference in Cresencio's parents names without further study. also, Cresencio is from Ojuelos de Jalisco.

If my info on Cresencio's parents is correct, then a I found a sister of his: Tomasa Martines, b. 26 Dec 1895, Oguelos fe Jalisco, Jalisco,, daughter of Jose Maria Martinez and Silveria Aguiñaga, paternal grandparents Serapio Martinez and Pia Gallegos, maternal grandparents Martin Aguiñaga and Leonarda Aldama.

I found a child of Cresencio and Maria Felix: Antonio Marinez, b. 19 Nov 1915, Villa de Cos. The grandparents are the same as in Cresencio's and Maria Felix's marriage record. I did not find any other children in Zacatecas, perhaps the family left and went elsewhere in Mexico or came to the United States at this time. You may be able to find them in the boarder crossing records. These can be searched at both Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.

I also took a look at the Francisco Coronado/Emilia Sanchez family. The birth records of all their children give the paternal grandmother as Clara Perez, inconsistent with your data. Their marriage record, 6 Aug 1892 (presentation, not marriage), Villa de Cos, however, gives her surname as Hinjosa, consistent with your data. Perhaps she used both. Their actual marriage would have been after Aug 6th, as the "presentation" is similar to the publishing of banns before a church wedding. At this time period you sometimes find both presentation and marriage records, sometimes only one of them, as in this case.

To try to sort this out I looked for Romualdo Coronado's and Clara's marriage record. What I found adds some more confusion. I found both the presentation (14 Feb 1874) and marriage (5 Mar 1874) in Villa de Cos. Romualdo's parents are the same as your information, but Clara is now Maria Clara Gonzalez, daughter of Marcelino Gonzalez and Maria Escalante. I did look further into this family.

What I would suggest at this time is to take another look at your family tree. Record all the information you find, and get copies of all the records you find. From both Ancestry.com and Family Search you can download the images.

Ancestry.com has indexed the Mexican civil records, and the images are linked. Don't rely on the indexes only, as there are sometimes errors. Always read the records.

Family Search is better for the church records. Sometimes (infrequently) images are linked to the indexed church records. The Family Search catalog will tell you which church records in the towns you are interested have been extracted/indexed. Many of the Mexican church records have been extracted/indexed, but there are gaps. Looking at the catalog will also tell you records have been microfilmed. In some towns there are periods of time when the records either do not exist or were not filmed.

I would not rely on Internet posted family trees. They frequently have no sources, or sources with so little identifying information that you cannot locate them for verification. All the dates and places I have provided are from the indexed Civil records at Ancestry.com and are readily found.

While none of this answers your original question about Isabel Martin, hopefully it will aid in your research. If you can provide some more info on her perhaps we can then answer your question.

Please don't hesitate to ask other questions here at Nuestros Ranchos, but please provide detail. We are glad to help.

hi george thank you so much for responding to me . yes my great grandmother was known to my family as felix as it was a family nickname for her. as for my great grandfather his birthdates etc were gleaned from social security records, ancestry.com my personal families records from lyons, ks genealogical society etc. i had a question about silveria person in a record that was found on ancestry.com i only found name and hasnt found anything more about her since then. however i did notice that many of my families records through family search are very vague. there is mestizo and or india posted in some of them and then it trails off.

Comentario

Stephanie

You're welcome!

Your family info about "Felix" is important, and gives some evidence that the marriage of Cresencio to "Maria Felix Coronado" is probably the right one.

Jose Marie Martinez is a pretty common name, so that by itself is not very helpful. The town in that Cresencio Martinez birth record actually is Teocuitatlan de Corona (by the way, in my earlier post I misspelled the name of the town) and is a long way from Villa de Cos, as well as a significant distance from Guadalajara. To have some certainty that he is the right one we need something in Villa de Cos that ties him to that town. I was only able to find one child of Cresencio in Villa de Cos. I found the 1940 census for Rice County, KS, for the family of Crcencio and Felicitas Martinez - all the children are born in Kansas. The child born in Mexico in 1915 is not there. He may have died early, as child deaths are pretty common, which may explain his absence.

The 1914 marriage record for Cresencio and Maria Felix says he is originally from Ojuelos de Jalisco, which is close to Villa de Cos. What is significant is that it does not say he is from Teocuitatlan de Corona.

So what all this means, is that Cresencio's parents are, at this time, more likely that not, Jose Maria Martinez and Silveria Aguinaga. If you have a death certificate for Cresencio this could resolve the question one way or another. The Kansas death records are not online, so I cannot verity this. By the way, I was able to trace the Aguinaga family back from Silveria to a Nicolas de Aguinaga, who had a son born about 1730 (I estimate) in Zacatecas.

I would still like to look at the Isabel Martin question. Can you give me the name of her husband, and some of her children?

yes all children of crescencio martinez who were my great grandparents were born in kansas. one of them was my grandpa john coronado martinez. however i do believe the 2 oldest children by names of antonio and or juaquina were born in mexico. antonio the boy you were referring too unfortunately was kidnapped in lyons , kansas while playing in yard. the boy was never found however family of mine says he was taken to mexico . i can contact lyons ks genealogical society to see if death certificate is available on crescencio far as i know he said he was from guadalara jalisco mexico from newspaper clipping of obituary etc.. they died 4 yrs before i was even born. as for lucas martin and or isabel martin or martinez was married to a sebastian veleida or velenda . she was born roughly about 1825 from mexico . on page 6 of record: jalisco, Mexico, Civil Registration Deaths, 1856-1987 i found through ancestry.com lists a child by name of Maria Francisca Veleida. parents of isabel was a lucas martin and a woman by name of gregoria never found a fist name for gregoria at all yet. both parents were born in mexico about 1800 and or mother was born about 1809. martina velenda or valeida was my 2nd greatgrandmother who was also child of isabel back then.

Dear Katherine,

You are right about it being Delgadillo and not Rodriguez. I looked at the notes I made and the surname is Delgadillo. I went back and edited the tree and replaced Rodriguez with Delgadillo.

Thank you,

To me it looks like the word is "herrero," which means he was a blacksmith by occupation.

The second word is "indígeno," meaning he is indigenous (Indian).

Hello Nuestros Ranchos Forum,

Could someone tell me what these two words mean on this defuncion for Jose Maria Saavedra. It's on the bottom of the page on the right and it's the two words immediately after it says 68 años

I was trying to contact you, but I do not think the e-mail link at Nuestros Ranchos is working. What is the best e-mail address that I can reach you at to talk about genealogy?

R.A. Ricci,

Oh wow! I also just sent you a message from the site profile contact page a few day ago. (I guess it also didn't go through.) It had to with the Velasquez line that you are a part of and you have written 2 different snippets in a couple of different forum posts a few years back.

Although I'm just getting around to asking about the family, I found out a few months ago that I am a descendant of Blas Velasquez and Micaela Mendoza through their son Joseph. Joseph moved and married in Ocotlan, Jal. in 1727 and a lot of his descendants seem to have stayed in that region for many generations. I was stuck on one generation under Joseph with his daughter Josepha Velsaquez, my 7x greatgrandmother, for a few years. I finally came across the really faded Marriage Informational for her in a disorganized collection of other Marriage Informational jumping back and forth between 1755-1757 in La Barca. (Marriage records for La Barca during the 1730s-1770s didn't give the couple's parents name)

Anyways I am now at standstill at Blas but have seen that you have his parents information and at least a few other generations. Can you help me out? my email is paul_gonzales91@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Paul

Dear Paul,

Blas Velasquez Hernandez (1662) is the son of Francisco Velasquez (b1623) and Catalina Hernandez (b1629).

Catalina Hernandez is the natural daughter of Domingo Hernandez Gamino (b1595, d. 13/Oct1687)

Domingo Hernandez Gamino is the son of Juan Hernandez Gamino ( b. Abt 1570 m. Bet 1590&1594, d. Bet 3/Apr/1633. & 13/Jun/1633

Domingo was born in Villa de Guadalupe, Trujillo, Caceres, Extremadura, España.

Juan was born in Caceres, Extremadura, España

I don't have Micaela Becerra Mendozas parents, only suspicions.

I descend from Blas and Micaelas son Felipe

Good luck in your research,
Rick A. Ricci

Dear David and Alex,

I guess it isn't working since I have not received any responses. I have found a lot more information on the Covarrubias ancestry and I was hoping to turn it into a chart and discuss this information before presenting it. Try sending your contact info again. I think one of you already has my email.

When is the next genealogy meeting in Southern or Northern California? Maybe I can present it then.

Looking forward to sharing,

Many public libraries, as well as all the LDS family history centers, have access to the institutional version of Ancestry.com. You can use these to get the info you need - both of these sites will allow you to down the images of the records you find.

I am planning to go to the library tomorrow, and will look for you.

Welcome, Vanessa!

I don't know how much you know about how to use familysearch, but it is a fantastic resource.

Doing a quick search of it with the info you gave us, I believe I found your grandfather in the 1930 US Federal Census.

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenn…~

That image gives us your grandfather, great-grandfather and great-grandmother's ages. It is important to always use real documents and to write down when and where you got your information. We call it "documenting your sources." Otherwise nothing is certain. Starting with an approximate year they were each born should allow you to search the images of familysearch for their baptisms or civil registration.

Below is the link to the image-by-image register of the baptisms in Degollado in the time frame your grandfather would have been born. It may take you some time, but I would star around 1921 and go through 1923. As you get more used to the documents you get faster and you find how much fun this can be!

Yes, thank you. I appreciate your help. However, I should have been a little more clearer. I wasn't looking for those individuals specifically, just wished to learn more about my family in general as the line goes higher. Familysearch is my best friend. :) As for my grandfather's Salcedo line, I have tracked up to my sixth great-grandfather whose name was Joaquin Salcedo who was born abt 1751 near Atotonilco El Alto. Approximately in Atotonilco El Alto he married Maria Segunda Barajas who was born in Jun 1751 in Atotonilco El Alto. Her parents were Agustin Barajas and Petrona De La Cruz. Her baptism record has her listed as a 'coyote'. They (Joaquin and Maria Segunda) had six children that I am aware of. That's as far as I am able to go with that line. As for my maternal line, I have the names of all 62 of my 5th great-grandparents. However, I have no stories or know much about them.

I should have worded my intro a little better but I really do appreciate the help. Is there anywhere where I can find local histories or information? I see so many mentions of people being captains and owners of haciendas on these forums but I can never find any information in the documents I look through (i.e. baptism/marriage records) for said information.

Trying to find the parents of Petronila de Retamosa Macias Valades Gonzalez de Gardea

I have been trying to figure out who the parents of Petronila de Retamosa Macias Valades Gonzalez de Gardea are and still have no real clue.

Comentarios

Comentario

I think that our Petronila likely comes from the household of Hernando Martel and Beatriz Macias Valades Retamosa Villegas. The origin of the padrinos and testigos of her children, Petronila’s peculiar use of surnames, and the intermarriage of some of her children all seem hover around this couple.

Identifying Padrinos and Testigos:

I believe I have all of the Gonzalez and Macias Padrinos and Testigos of our Petronila’s children identified accept for Joseph Macias Valadez.

I think that Beatriz Gonzalez (padrina to Juan Lozano) and Phelipe Gonzalez (testigo to Juan Antonio Lozano) are siblings. Only I think they are both the children of Juan Gonzalez and Francisca del Castillo, not Luis Gonzalez and Catalina de Quiroga, but they are still both grandchildren of Luis Gonzalez and Beatriz Gallegos.

I think Miguel Martel (testigo of Manuel Lozano) is the same as stated earlier by Chris.

I think that Pedro Macias Valadez (testigo to Eugenio Lozano and Juana Lozano) is the same Pedro Macias Valadez (husband to both Francisca Ruiz de Quiroga/de Espitia and Luisa de Esparza). I think that Antonio Macias Valadez (testigo to Joseph Lozano) is the same Antonio Macias Valadez (husband of Francisca Martinez de Zuniga y Mozos). In this way, Pedro and Antonio are brothers and are both the children of Pedro Macias Valadez and Josefa Gutierrez. I think that Pedro Macias Valadez (husband of Josefa Gutierrez) is the same Pedro baptized 5 June 1625 in Aguascalientes who was the child of Pedro Macias Valadez and Luisa de Villegas. This would make Pedro Macias Valadez (husband of Josefa Gutierrez) a brother of Beatriz Macias Valadez Retamosa Villegas (wife of Hernando Martel).

Origins of Padrinos and Testigos reviewed:

Looking back at the identifiable padrinos and testigos of our Petronila’s children, they all seem to be relatives of Hernando Martel (son of Luis Gonzalez and Beatriz Gallegos) and Beatriz Macias Valades Retamosa Villegas (daughter of Pedro Macias Valades and Luisa Villegas). Beatriz and Felipe Gonzalez are both children of Juan Gonzalez and Francisca del Castillo, and both grandchildren of Luis Gonzalez and Beatriz Gallegos. Pedro and Antonio Macias Valades are both children of Pedro Macias Valades and Josefa Gutierrez, and both probably grandchildren of Pedro Macias Valades and Luisa de Villegas. Miguel Martel is the son of Hernando Martel and Beatriz Macias Valades Retamosa Villegas, and thus a grandchild to both sets of grandparents.

Miguel Martel’s brother Francisco had a daughter named Petronila. Considering the scarcity of this name on either side of these families, I would guess that she was probably named after our Petronila, potentially her aunt – or half aunt, or adopted aunt – I will elaborate on this below.

The peculiar use of surnames/ the unexplained Gardea:

Our Petronila being the daughter of Hernando Martel and Beatriz Macias Valades Retamosa Villegas would explain the Retamosa, Macias, and Gonzalez of her surnames, but not her use of Gardea.

Perhaps Luis Gonzalez (husband of Beatriz Gallegos) was a son of Martin Perez de Gardea and Mariana Gonzalez de Ruvalcaba. It does fit the timeline. Also, keep in mind that Luis Gonzalez did have a daughter Mariana Gonzalez potentially named after her paternal grandmother. However, let’s not jump to conclusions yet.

I am wondering if Joseph Lozano and his wife Petronila may have broken the “rules of surname inheritance” in a few cases.

Our Petronila’s husband Joseph Lozano does appear a few times as Joseph “Lozano de Gardea” even though we know that his mother was not Mariana Gonzalez de Gardea. Gardea does not appear among the ancestors of his father Cristobal Lozano unless Cristobal Lozano’s great-grandmother Isabel Gonzalez was really Isabel “Gonzalez de Gardea” but I have not seen evidence of this. Maybe Gardea hints to whoever Joseph Lozano’s unnamed mother was or maybe Joseph Lozano broke the “rules of surname inheritance” and used his stepmother Mariana Gonzalez de Gardea’s surname regardless of not being her son. Perhaps this was to give the appearance of legitimacy.

With our Petronila’s racial status falling under Mestiza or Tresalba, and the racial status of all Herando Martel and his wife’s relatives falling under purely “Espanol” (correct me if I am wrong here), I am left with the impression that like her husband Joseph Lozano, our Petronila may have been a natural daughter growing up in this household.

Like her husband, she may have used surnames that she was not technically descended from to give the appearance of legitimacy. Expositas often simply adopt the surnames of the households they are raised by. Could our Petronila be a natural daughter of Hernando Martel or his wife? Or could our Petronila be a natural daughter of some other blood relative of Hernando Martel or his wife, but was brought up as an exposita in the household of Hernando Martel? Exposita or not, I feel that our Petronila must have had some blood connection to this household.

Intermarriage of our Petronila’s children/Unclear Dispensas:

A few hints to Petronilas having a blood descent, from at least Nicolas Macias Valades and Leonor de Retamosa, come through the marriages of some of her children. The info. mat. of Petronila’s daughter Maria Lozano, found here:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DHQK-H5?i=412&wc=M6QF-MNL%…

indicates that Maria Lozano married her cousin Alvaro Macias Valades who she was related to in the third and/or forth degree, but does not give specifics. I am not sure if they are cousins once, descending from a trunk couple three generations on one side and four generations on the other, or if they are double cousins, thus third cousins in one way and second cousins in another.

The above mentioned Alvaro Macias Valades, was the son of Alvaro Valades (husband of Sebastiana Fernandez de Alarcon), who was the son of Juan Alvaro Hernandez Valades (husband of Maria Gutierrez de Valdivia), who was the son of Juan Valades (husband of Isabel de la Cruz). This Juan Valades I suspect of being a son or grandson of Nicolas Macias Valades and Leonor de Retamosa.

Another child of Petronila, Joseph Lozano Gonzalez Macias, may have married a cousin. Joseph Lozano Gonzalez Macias was married to Maria Teresa Nunez in Aguascalientes 12 August 1716. The marriage record and corresponding info. mat. do not seem to indicate the need for a dispensa, but Maria Teresa Nunez was the daughter of a Juan Nunez and a Maria Teresa Vargas Macias Valades. Intrigued by this “Macias Valades” I tried to hunt down the parents of Maria Teresa Vargas Macias Valades but found two contradicting accounts given in two dispensas.

The first dispensa, found here:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-629D-FG?i=412&wc=3J43-HZS%…

concerns the marriage of Maria Teresa Vargas Macias Valades’ daughter Ana Nunez (sister to Maria Teresa Nunez) to Juan de Atuna. The dispensa makes Maria Teresa Vargas Macias Valades the daughter of Gabriel de Castaneda and Maria Valades (who was a first cousin of Juan Vargas Valades who was a son of Juan Valades and Maria Lopez Rebollo). Gabriel de Castaneda is also the half brother of Juan Vargas Valades.

The second dispensa, found here:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6Y9N-NC?mode=g&i=74&wc=3J4…

concerns the marriage of Nicolas Lopez de la Serda, widower of Maria Gertrudis Lozano who was a daughter of the previously mentioned Joseph Lozano Gonzalez Macias and Maria Teresa Nunez, to a third cousin of his departed wife. It makes Maria Teresa Vargas Macias Valades the daughter of a Juan Vargas Valades (a brother of Andrea Vargas Valades who married Felipe de Trillo).

I am not sure if the two Juan Vargas Valades’s mentioned in the two dispensas are the same person or not, or if the second dispensa is confusing Gabriel de Castaneda and replacing him with his half brother Juan Vargas Valades. In any event, the use of “Vargas” in these lines makes me suspect that Maria Teresa Vargas Macias Valades was descended from Blas Vargas Valades (husband of Luisa de Siordia) who I believe was a natural son of Gaspar Macias Valades (son of Nicolas Macias Valades and Leonor de Retamosa.)

So some of our Petronila’s children intermarried with other descendants of Nicolas Macias Valades and Leonor de Retamosa; this does not quite help us solve Petronila’s descent. Whether she is a legitimate daughter, natural daughter, or exposita daughter, I still feel that our Petronila has some blood connection to the household of Hernando Martel and Beatriz Macias Valadez Retamosa Villegas.

I think some people used their step-parents name. My ancestor Bartolome Josephe Martel who is married to Juana Manuela Lozano de Gardea is the grandson of the Miguel Martel you mentioned as Testigo to Manuel Lozano. Bartolome Josephe Martel's parents are Catalina Anguino y velasco and Miguel Martel but Catalina Anguino y Velasco was also married to Nicolas Ponce and Bartolome Josephe Martel was also known as Bartholome Josephe Ponce and my ancestors all took the Ponce last name from his step-father and not Martel

Danny C. Alonso

Comentario

Hi Danny,

I am not aware of any of my ancestors using a step-parent's name. I suppose it's possible, but, I haven't seen it. But, I don't think Bartolome Joseph Ponce used his step-father's name. First, Doña Catalina Velasco de Anguiano was widowed from Nicolas Ponce, when she married Miguel Martel. So, Bartolome Joseph Ponce wouldn't have been alive when Nicolas Ponce was alive, so, it doesn't seem like it would make sense that he would use an apellido of someone he not only never knew, but also wasn't his father. I believe Doña Catalina Velasco de Anguiano was also Doña Catalina Ponce and Bartolome Joseph Ponce was actually using his mother's apellido. Here on the baptism of a daughter of hers and Miguel Martel, she is listed as Doña Catalina Ponce:

Chris,

How do you know for sure that Catalina Ponce and Catalina Velasco de Anguino are the same person. couldn't there be more than one person named Migel Martel. also do you think then that joseph lozano de gardea is not using his step mother's name?

Danny C. Alonso

Comentario

Hi Danny,

Maria Efigenia Martel, the daughter that Miguel Martel and Catalina Ponce were baptizing in 1699 is the same daughter that's listed on her defuncion as the daughter of Miguel Martel and Catalina de Anguiano here:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XK5W-VH3

Regarding, Joseph Lozano de Gardea, no, I personally do not believe he would use Gardea if he was not in someway related to that family.

Chris

Comentario

Hi David,

I think you're on the right track with some of these testigos. Many are interrelated. Beatriz González, madrina to Juan Lozano, I believe is the daughter of Luis González and Catalina de Quiroga and the granddaughter of Luis González and Beatriz Gallegos, that would also explain the Martel connection as Beatriz Gallegos is a probable daughter of Captain Hernando Martel, founder of Santa Maria de los Lagos.

Felipe González, testigo to Juan Antonio Lozano, is the brother to the above Beatriz González, and also grandson of the same Luis González and Beatriz Gallegos.

Miguel Martel, testigo to Manuel Lozano's marriage is the brother to the above named Francisco Martel. He's the son of Hernando Martel and Beatriz de Retamosa, aka Beatriz Macías Valadez, aka Beatriz de Villegas. He's also grandson of the same Luis González and Beatriz Gallegos.

Chris

Comentario

Hi Paige,

I agree. Plus, I think the Gardea part of the name was the most important to them, since that's what they chose to pass on. Not once among their descendants have I seen Macías or Retamosa, but, numerous descendants used some variation of González de Gardea, Lozano de Gardea, etc.

I can't recall more than once that I've seen Petronila de Retamosa as madrina. I do know she was madrina to her grandson Joseph, along with Onofre Lozano, the son of Cristobal Lozano and Mariana González de Gardea, and, half brother to her husband. But, that's about the only time I know of where she was madrina.

Isabel Mendoza

I do not know if this Isabel Mendoza that we have been looking for all these years but she does have many, if not all, of the puzzle pieces that we have been using as clues.

Comentarios

Comentario

After discovering that I had found an "Isabel Mendoza" in the right time frame and matching many of the clues that genealogists have had in their search for the spouse of Toribio Hernandez, I searched through my decades of research for answers as to why I had not found her before, and for additional clues that I have to confirm or disprove that she is the actual Isabel Mendoza that I have been looking for.

I stated that the prime reason for not finding her previously was that she was said to be related to the Viceroy and that we genealogists had assumed that she was related to the first Viceroy because he was surnamed Mendoza instead of looking at her possible relationship to the second Viceroy. After looking at my research notes for many decades of research I find that I had looked at the possibility of our "Isabel Mendoza" being related to the second Viceroy instead of the first. The previous research into the second viceroys family member named Isabel had come up with the information that this family member had become a nun. Later research done at another time had also come up with another family member named Isabel Mendoza that had become a nun. On separate searches, these Isabel Mendozas had been identified as becoming nuns and been ruled out as being our "Isabel Mendoza".

So there are two Isabel Mendoza (Velasco) in the family alive at the same time that are in the time frame that fit the clues that we have on the Isabel Mendoza married to Toribio Hernandez Arellano (aka Toribio Hernandez de Santillana). The issue is that previous research had discarded both of these from being our "Isabel Mendoza" because they had entered a religious order. The mistake that genealogists have made is in identifying both of these Isabel Mendozas as entering into the same religious order. Only one of them became a nun and the other one is most likely the Isabel Mendoza married to Toribio Hernandez Arellano.

When I write "the mistake that genealogists have made in identifying both of these Isabel Mendoza as entering a religious order" I am speaking of my mistake in accepting that each one entered the religious order without checking for similarities in the stories and failing to recognize that only one of them had become a nun. I am assuming that other genealogists have made the same mistake and discarded both of these Isabel Mendozas as being our "Isabel Mendoza" like I had.

The similarities of the two Isabel Mendozas is what causes the misidentification as to both of them becoming nuns. They are both Isabel Mendoza Velasco (aka Isabel Velasco Mendoza). They are both close in age. One is the aunt of the other. The aunt is the Isabel Mendoza Velasco that is the half sister to the Viceroy. The niece is the Franciscan nun.

Comentario

Toribio Hernandez Arellano and Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza had two daughters named Isabel. I found this unusual. But in real life I have also encountered families with two siblings with the same name. I have also found it in a few other cases in my ancestral tree but they either had same first name and different middle name or different first names and same middle names. But the case of Toribio and Isabel's daughter s the two of them used different surnames I never understood why anyone would name two of their children with the same name. Until now that is.

For Toribio Hernandez Arrellano the name Isabel was very important as his father passed away when he was young and he was raised by a single mom. Naming a daughter after her would have been very important to him.

For Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza, the half sister if the Viceroy, the name Isabel had maybe even more significance. Isabel is the Spanish equivalent of Elizabeth. Edward III and Elizabeth of Suffolk named their daughter Eliabeth. This daughter was married to Sancho Martinez de Leiva (Iron Arm/el Braso de de Hierro). Once this Elizabeth lived in Spain she came to be known as Isabel. A grandson named Pedro de Zuniga, Conde de Ledesma y Plasencia, married Isabel Guzman. They had a granddaughter named Isabel de Zuniga y Avellaneda. This Isabel was the great grandmother of Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza, s half sister to the viceroy that fits all the clues that we have for the wife of Toribio Hernandez Arellano. Every Isabel in this family tree was looked up to by this family and they would want to share that name with their descendants. So one daughter was named after the father's side of the family and the other daughter was named after the mother's side of the family.

Isabel Mendoza is a second cousin to Mariana Mendoza who is the mother-in-law of Balthazar Temino de Banuelos. Mariana Mendoza's father, Luis Marin is closer in age to Isabel's half brother the Viceroy. Luis Marin is identified as a close friend of her half brother, the Viceroy. Luis Marin is said to be a musician and the life of the party.

If this Isabel Mendoza is the Isabel Mendoza married to Toribio Hernandez Arellano, we can look to a mistake made by myself and many other genealogists for not finding her sooner. When we read that she was related the the Viceroy we assumed that it was the first Viceroy Mendoza instead of the second Viceroy Velasco. Though she is related to the first Viceroy, it is not a close relationship like the second Viceroy.

I shouldn't be speaking for other genealogists, but I was guilty of looking only at the first Viceroy's closest relatives for a relationship to an Isabel Mendoza.

Martin Casillas was also said to be related to the Viceroy. I have only looked at the first Viceroy for clues to his ancestry, It's time to look at the second Viceroys family for clues to Martin Casillas "el Alarife"'s ancestry. Anyone looking for Martin Casillas connection should remember that the name of Martin Casillas's father is Pedro Casillas.

I see Andrea de Rutiaga. Look at the "R" on "Ramirez," just a couple of lines up. It's identical.

That's the surname of an early SLP family.

Comentario

Thanks Manny I did see the R the same as the surname but it still didn't make sense to me. I don't recall having seen Rutiaga before. I was able to add the correct surname and change the Aviles to Robledo and bonanza, I found 11 children.

It seems part of my paternal side is from Villa de Reyes (although, some were from Bledos that at one point was the jurisdiction of Zacatecas. Anyone know if this is short for RoBLEDO). The issue is there are many branches of Robledo so I am mapping out all the different families in search of Juan de Dios Robledo Gutierrez. And the other family I am searching is Mateo Perez and Cipriana Guanajuato. The issue with this family is that there surnames were switched on many many records so I don't know which name really belongs to which though we all thought and have used Perez. I have found a family of Guanajuato fitting the timeline of 1831, only problem, there are a set of twins named mateo and another in 1839 named mateo! Sounds crazy, but I have a cousin who name all her children after her and her sons after her husband with a different middle name.

Comentario

Hi Simona,

Bledos was a hacienda in the jurisdiction of San Luis Potosi. "Rutiaga" likely originates with Francisco Rutiaga, an early resident of SLP. He was from Brussels, Belgium, so it's not a castillian nor basque surname.

I am stuck on Roman Esparza C. 1830 in Fresnillo, married to Rosalia Gaitan born Sep. 9, 1835 in Pinos, Zac.
I can’t find records for Esparza. I have followed the Gaitan line to a Miguel Gaitan abt. 1706 in Pinos and Antonia Arias Bedolla.

I would also appreciate help with Tomas Moreno 1837 and Maria Agustina Torres Arroyo in Fresnillo.
Tomas’ parents are Felix Moreno and Candida Gomez.
Maria Agustina’s parents are Antonio Arroyo and Maria Torres.

I am also researching Garza, Navarro, Palacios, Sosa, Delgado, Castaneda, Jimenez, Munos, Sanchez to name a few of my ancestors!!

Any help or direction anyone can give would be appreciated.

I assume you are looking for the dispensation for Jose Clemente and Ermenegilda. I would expect this to have been done in early 1809. There are four films in the Diocese of Guadalajara for 1809 dispensations, but unfortunately they have not yet been indexed. I checked Claudia's dispensa website.

What you are looking for may be there!

Maria de las Ruelas y Sotomayor

Hi Danny,

Thanks for reposting the link to Mary Lou's dropbox, I couldn't find it the other day. I don't have the answer to your question, although, I do descend from Isabel Marín.

My question is about the daughter Antonia de las Ruelas, wife of Alonso de Laredo, that received the dowry of 4000 pesos. I'm curious if anyone is aware of her children. Because, I have a couple that I've hit a brick wall on, Captain Juan Laredo de Sotomayor and Juana de Laris y Otalora and looking at the name Laredo de Sotomayor, it would make sense that his parents might be Alonso de Laredo and Antonia de las Ruelas, knowing that the Ruelas family also use Sotomayor. If anyone is aware of the children of Alonso de Laredo and Antonia de las Ruelas, please let me know.

Hello, Danny.

I don't know why Isabel used Marin. Early in my research on Andres Martin and Maria de las Ruelas/Sotomayor I would occasionally come across Andres with the surname Marin. And some of the kids, too, like Isabel. I even started some FGSs with Marin. But as the family expanded, Martin was the dominant surname. Later I would sometimes come across Marin and even Martinez, but I stayed with Martin and blamed the scribe!

Mary Lou

Comentario

Finally found the FGS on Alonso de Laredo and Antonia de las Roelas y Sotomayor. Added it to Dropbox. Front and back.

When their son Juan was baptized the entry refers to Alonso as Juan. That's the only place I've seen him referred to as Juan. There were several "Juan/Juana" in that entry and the scribe may have been careless. Maybe.

Also note that Philipa's mother is listed as Antonia Marin. Another instance of Marin/Martin.

Very glad that the Dropbox is being used and is of help. I haven't done original research for about 10 years. But I have much in my files that I want to share. I'm working on a project right now that will take a few weeks: my extractions of early unfilmed records of Pinos. Starting with baptisms. A treasure. I don't think anyone else has done these. Stop me if they have.

Hi Mary Lou,

Yes, the Dropbox is amazing. And, thank you for adding the latest FGS. It's been extremely helpful in my research. Plus, it brings up a lot of interesting questions. I hadn't thought of the Marin/Martin question before, but, now that I've seen 3 records that use Marin, I'm beginning to wonder about Danny's question, because now it no longer seems like a mistake of the scribe. I wonder the origins. Thanks again Mary Lou. And, I await the latest add to the Dropbox.

Hi Chris,

I came upon this in the SLP misc: 18 Jul 1647, Antonia Marin declares that Alonso Laredo has abandoned her and their children, who have been staying at the home of her cuñado, Lucas de Santa Cruz, in SLP (who can barely sustain himself). I’ve only scanned through it, but it looks like she’s trying to free up some of her dowry, or something. They mention that they have a son and a daughter, but don’t name them (img86):
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-958F-PZ5?i=83&wc=MXBY-RZW

And here’s the follow-up from 14 Sep 1647. One of the testigos was Joseph Martin, who might be her brother, but I don’t see his “Jusepe Martin” signature:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G58F-R5W?i=58&wc=MXBY-RNR

Heavy stuff. This generation was plagued with drama. It’s like one of my mother’s telenovelas!

I’ve found some other documents, regarding the children of Andres Martin and Maria de Ruelas, which I’ll post in this thread.

Hola primas y primos,

Here are entries for Maria de las Ruelas, and her spinster daughter, Josepha de las Ruelas, in the 1668, 1681, 1684 padrones for SLP.

1668 SLP Padron (begins img1139). Maria Ruela can be found in left image, column 4, with daughters Josepha and Teresa, and grandchildren:

1681 SLP Padron (begins img974). Maria de las Ruelas having already passed away, Josepha de las Ruelas (left image) apparently took over as matriarch and guardian of her nephews and nieces. Antonia de las Ruelas and her children are in the right image:

Hola primas y primos,

These are some of the documents that Mary Lou discovered, regarding Maria de las Ruelas, laying the groundwork for her children’s attempt to have her declared unfit to manage her own affairs. Thank you again, Mary Lou, for sharing, and for pointing us in the right direction!

23 Apr 1673: Maria de las Ruelas gives her declaration as sole heiress of her deceased grandson, Antonio Diaz de la Guerta, a merchant in Teocaltiche, married to Geronimo de Alarcon y Rubalcava. She gives an inventory of his assets, which included over 400 head of cattle. In these documents, the surname “Barriga” is used, instead of “Camacho.” This might be, because these proceedings took place in SLP, where there were several unrelated families named “Camacho,”and maybe they wanted to avoid confusion. That’s just a guess: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-958F-92D5?i=367&wc=MXBY-RTB

21 Jun 1674: Pedro Martin Barriga, Nicolas Martin and Antonia de las Ruelas, attempt to have their mother, Maria de las Ruelas, declared unfit to manage her own affairs, due to her advanced age. She has already given powers to the husband of her granddaughter, Marcos de Villareal, so that he can manage her business affairs, which the 3 children are contesting. As Mary Lou says, the documents are fragmented, with tears mid-sentence, but you can get the gist of it, if you just read through. Maria de las Ruelas first appears on img307. She really gives her wayward kids the verbal chankla!
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G58F-9P1R?i=300&wc=MXBY-TTG

By the way, I estimate that Maria de las Ruelas died between Nov 1674 and Apr 1681, since she doesn’t appear in the 1681 padron. She would’ve been in her early 90’s.

Enjoy!

Dear Manny,

I really enjoy reading your posts. You have provided much information. Since most of my work lately has focused on the other side of the Atlantic I must rely on these posts to keep up to date on research in the Americas.

I too have found the Marin and the Martin surnames at times used interchangeably. For my ancestor Ma. Jpha Potenciana Marin "Arenas" de la Peña Losa it just turned out to be scribes mistakes. But for another line there was a marriage between a Marin descendant and a Martin Descendant so it went back and forth until Martin was the surname that stuck.

I am very curious about the Barriga name being used instead of Camacho. We already know that there is a connection between the Camacho surname and Fernandez de Córdoba surname. Can this Barriga name be another clue to finding the Camacho ancestry? What else do you know about the Barriga name and where else it was used?

Thanks again for all your help,
Rick A. Ricci

Hi Danny,

You’re welcome, and thank you for starting this thread: it’s a good place to share and store information & sources relative to our common ancestor, Maria de las Ruelas y Sotomayor, and to her descendants.

Hi Rick,

You’re welcome, and thank you, for your work in Europe, since I descend from some of the same lines, and am only focussing on Mexico, for the time being. My aim is to take as many of my lines back to the peninsula, as possible, and then work from there. I’m sure I’ll be sourcing a lot of your work, when I get there! By the way, I’m unfamiliar with the Camacho link to the Fernandez de Cordoba, which excites me to no end!

“Marin” might be a corruption of “Martin,” and, has anyone else noticed that only the daughters of Andres Martin and Maria de Ruelas (and their descendants) use it? Maybe it morphed, because the women couldn’t sign their names, and it stuck. Or, it could be another surname altogether, and another clue. Another one of those cultural enigmas that will plague us!

Re: “Martin Barriga,” according to “Diccionario biografico de antiguos pobladores de San Luis Potosi 1592-1666,” by Rafael Morales Bocardo, an early resident of SLP was Diego Martin Barriga aka Diego Martin Camacho, b. 1568, who served as Teniente de Alguacil Mayor de San Luis Potosi, in 1599. He appears as a testigo throughout the early SLP protocolos and causas criminales, 1599-1608. Mary Lou and I have discussed him, and believe he is likely related to Andres Martin Camacho - brother, or a cousin. Mary Lou found a Diego Martin Barriga in an unsourced online tree, in which he was married to Ana de Torres, and had a daughter named Mariana de Torres. Mariana married Antonio Rodriguez Becerra, and lived in Sombrerete. Their daughter, Catalina Becerra, married Luis de Soto, with descendants in Aguascalientes - though I haven’t been able to verify any of this. The timeline appears to fit, but we still don’t know if he’s the same Diego Martin Barriga, nor if he's related to Andres Martin.

I’ve seen “Barriga” in some of the Michoacan padrones, which I’ll go back and research, when I get a chance. I need to go back and sift through early Sagrario SLP and Cerro de San Pedro rolls, to see if Diego Martin appears. I'll post if I find anything.

Saludos!

Hi Manny,

This is great. It really is like a Telanovela. Thanks for this. And, for providing the links to the Padrones, it will really come in handy. Regarding the Marin surname, I tend to think it's a whole other surname altogether, since it appears to many times. On the IM of Maria de las Ruelas's grandson, Antonio Diaz de Huerta, who by the way was the indirect cause of a lot of the drama, he refers to his mother as Ysabel Marin. While his brother Sebastian refers to his mother as Ysabel Marin de Larrueles, which I'm guessing is an incorrect spelling for las Ruelas. But, I really am curious where the Marin comes from. And, the Barriga.

Hello, Chris.

I have looked everywhere for my FGS on Alonso and Antonia and finally gave up. From other sources I have the names of three children:

16 May 1636 Luis (padrino Francisco Sanchez)
24 Aug 1639 Margarita (padrinos Felipe Gomes y Maria de Arrona)
Juan Laredo de Sotomayor cc Juana de Lares

I assume these children were born in San Luis Potosi. I just don't have my FGS to back that up.

I have a FGS on Juan Laredo and Juana de Lares (dtr of Domingo de Lares and Nicolasa de Santoyo y de Mendosa) and have two of their children identified:

Isabel Laredo de Sotomayor b.1685 in SLP but raised in Aguascalientes. She gave marriage information on 28 Sep 1700 in AGS to marry Juan Butron Moxica from AGS viudo de doña Isabel de Araiza. He was 34; Isabel was 15.

Rodrigo Laredo b. 21 May 1681 SLP Real San Francisco de los Pozos. His mother was also know as Juana de Laris y Otalora.

If I ever find the FGS on Alonso and Antonia I will let you know. I also have a note that Alonso was sometimes called Juan. Hope this helps.

Juana Nunez de Lara, señora de Lara y Viscaya is not the mother of Maria Tellez de Castilla and Pedro Ledesmas ancestry

Research, like life, takes us through unexpected paths in our journey. I had previously stated that I believed the following erroneous statement on a previous post:

Comentarios

Comentario

Latest research as of May 27, 2016

Research reveals that again the source used for claiming that Maria teller de Castilla is not Juana de Lara's daughter is the letter that if anyone botherered to read actually implies that she is a legitimate daughter. It is her half sister that is identified as being illegitimate in the letter.

The reason that the letter implies that she is legitimate is because the Catholic Church recognized her as being legitimate. Further research reveals that her father had appealed to the Catholic Church, and they responded by giving her legitimate status.

Even though she was deemed legitimate, I doubt that she is Juana de Lara's daughter because if she was the daughter of his wife I don't think he would have needed to ask the church to deem her legitimate.

Dear Alex,

Holy Cow is how I feel. Edward III does not compare to the other branch that Pedro descends from. It was actually someone else, arguably the greatest knight who ever lived, who had an even greater impact on English history that I had originally thought I had descended from but the previous link had been proven false, this knight is an ancestor to Pedro Ledesma.

What is also important was the thread that brought me back to this branch that opened the door to more research lines. Researching these new lines brought me to someone that I already descend from through another line, but had dead ended in the 1400s. but this time when I researched from a different angle since I was coming from different people, I found the ancestors to what had been a deadend. This ancestor actually makes many people of Nueva Galicia a descendant of Edward III, even if they don't descend from Pedro Ledesma. Someone may have already discovered this but to me this is new information.

This is absolutely amazing information you are providing. Im still working my way to my first ancestors in the new world and here you are hopping the pond diving deep into time! How have your research techniques changed? Are you still looking at church documents? Thank you!

Comentario

Dear Alex,

The research is done differently. The baptismal records started in the 1500s so to go farther back you need to look at other type of church records, business records, legal records, books. The study of genealogy was done even back then. What we have going for us is that many of our ancestors practiced endogamy even before coming over to this side of the pond. They kept track of how they were related and much information comes from inheritance disputes where relationships have to be documented. Being able to list your parents and grandparents was important. The issues come up with people's names and surnames being different then today's practices. Look at my post on the Ochoa ancestry from a few weeks ago and you will see how surnames changed sometimes from one generation to the next.

This is reminiscent of Rebecca Skloot's book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." Henrietta was a cancer patient many years ago from whom doctors took cells without her knowledge or permission. They developed cell lines from her that are still today used in research, with financial gain for various individuals and organizations, and with nothing for her or her family. This was done before informed consent was required for participation in medical research.

I wonder if the practice of these DNA testing companies is consistent with modern medical informed consent practice?

This book is still available and is worth reading.
