Symbol of the Cross on Baptism Records

Hello Everyone, does someone know what a symbol of the cross on the margin next to Baptism record signifies.

Ruben, where is the older post you found? I would like to read it too. There are helpful guides for deciphering texts, but I cannot find one that addresses symbols in the margin.

I found a marriage record with a similar symbol, and am wondering its meaning there. The record is;
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18453-5545-67?cc=1874591&wc=… : accessed 28 Feb 2014), Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1979 > Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1979 > Colotlán > San Luis Obispo > Matrimonios 1720-1752 > image 34 of 508.

It shows the marriage of Diego Pinedo (mulatto) and Chatarina de la Cruz (of Tepuliche). Below that notation in the margin is a symbol like our percent (%) and a cross with circles at each of the four ends, outlined with four curves.

What does that mean?

I do see that it looks more like OJO than a percent symbol, but still don't understand its meaning. Looking a few pages forward and back from the record of interest, the notation, "OJO" appears on only a few records.

What is the significance of the cross and the other symbol in the margin?

Thanks

I found my answer thanks to an old post from Bill Figueroa. From what I read it was used to indicate the child was Spaniard and not mixed.

The latin phrase has something to do with Godparents because its right before their names. Its not very clear but I beleive it reads "suscep erunt eg asacrofonte"
Thanks

I wanted to add that the Symbol of the Cross is hand drawn and filled in (It really stands out), and Im curious why some Old Baptism Records have it next to only certain names and not others. I tried researching this but did not find an answer.

Thanks

Abbreviations used in the Catholic Church registers

I apologize if there is a list of abbreviations used in the Catholic Church parish registers in Mexico, however, after some searching I haven't been able to locate one.

The C. stands for "ciudadano". (citizen).

"Natural" USUALLY means natural child, that is, born out of wedlock or father unknown, or in some cases neither parent is known.

Depending on context, "natural" may also mean native of, same as "originario".

Some records abbreviate M (Mujer) or H (Hombre) in the margin of the record. This can be helpful when the other gender indicators in the text are unclear.

Comentario

Denise,

Natural, in this case, most likely means that the person is originally from that town. I try not to use the term "native" because that can also cause confusion.

If the groom had been born out of wedlock it would have said h.n. for hijo natural.

When there are questions about a record it is best to provide a link to the document so we can see the context of the document and if there are other clues. For instance, if it says h.l. (hijo legitimo) then there is no question that "natural" means originally and not born out of wedlock.

Armando

Comentario

If every record has this C. abbreviation, it may stand for Citizen.
"Natural (de)" means "originary (from)" or "born (in)".

you see i have an ancestor who sometimes is refered to as antonia avila and other times as catalina cid. have anyone else here had the same problem?

Yes, many times a woman goes by more than one name. Or parts of her full name. Her full name could be Antonia Catalina Avila Cid. But don't jump to that as the only solution. People changed or modified their names often, so that in later records you may not recognize the same person found in earlier records. I have several instances of females having as many as seven different surnames in various records, along with several variations of their given names. Whether it was that they had decided to be known by different names, or that the informants were not well informed, is hard to tell. I can certainly relate to your dilemma trying to decide if the two names belong to the same person.
Name variations seem to be more common with women than men. Perhaps it was because of the culture of the times, that the women were often not present at the christenings of their children, being "churched" or recovering from childbirth, and those present may have known her by her first name only. Remember - in many instances these were very poor people, almost slaves, and working hard to survive. And most of them were also illiterate.
Another reality which causes confusion many more times than you would expect is two siblings who have the same name. In my wife's direct ancestral line there is a Timoteo Puentes, who had a brother with exactly the same name. At first I thought he was married twice, until I noticed that the children of the two wives overlapped. One Timoteo married Severa Rodríguez and the other married Arcadia Zapata. To make matters worse, Severa had a sister named Severina, which you would expect to be a variation of the same name. And to make it even more confusing, one of the priests in the original records confused the wives of the two brothers and came up with Severa Zapata, leading one researcher to think they were the same person, and combining the names into Severa Arcadia Rodríguez Zapata. It took a lot of evidence to unravel the confusion and prove that some of the original records were wrong.
I have about six such instances of same-name siblings in my database. In one case there were THREE siblings of the same name. This scenario most commonly happens with twins, or with a child who was born on an older sibling's birthday. It does NOT usually mean that the older child had died - in most cases the siblings were contemporary and each raised their own families.
I might also point out that most of the "original" records were not really original. They were copied from other volumes or loose papers months or even years after the fact. Internal evidence reveals many typographical-style errors, parts of records ending up in other records, names and relationships missplaced, dates that don't make sense, gender errors (lots of them), etc.
My conclusion, then, is that you just have to keep on gathering evidence, until you get enough that hopefully the true picture will begin to emerge.

I had the same issue with an ancestor of mine having a Franco father and somewhere else her father is surnamed Martin del Campo. What happened was that the Martin del campo was the the biological father but he died when she was very young and her stepfather who raised her is listed as her father when she gets married.

It's not uncommon for a person to be referred to with two different names.
i.e. Juan Antonio Carlos's parents are Jose Carlos and Maria Carrillo. He can be referred to as either Juan Carlos or Antonio Carrillo. I've seen this many times.

Comentario

I believe these are two different women-- wives of the same man. I'm sure someone recording the vital information perhaps mixed up the names sometimes, but I don't think there is only one woman. What makes you think so?

Victoriano Ramirez Lopez "El Catorce"

I have been researching Victoriano Ramirez off and on and only had success indirectly. I have his fathers' name and the father's three brothers and a sister. I have his mom's brother's name and her parents, grandparents, and so on, but not her name. I have tracked the Lopez family in san miguel el alto and his father in the vicinity of San Julian. I have where victoriano was born but not a date. Is any one researching him?

Hello Steve,
Thank you very much for your information on Victoriano Ramirez. My wife's grandfather knew and admired Victoriano Ramirez. Paolo, her grandfather, had a portrait of Victoriano standing next to his horse. I was happily surprised to see this portrait hanging in his house. He enjoyed talking about him. He gave me the portrait in front of witnesses but I did not take it down out of respect for him. He was almost a hundred years old at the time. When an uncle of my wife heard that he had given me the portrait, he took down the portrait and said that it was now his. He later felt guilty and let me borrow it for a few months. This happened over twenty years ago. This portrait is now in Northern California. My mother in law is also related to Victorianos mother.

Congratulations
Estimado Steve,

You have done magnificent work. I thank you so much for sharing. My desire to research "Victoriano el Catorce" was because I wanted to know exactly how he was related either to me or my wife. My wife's grandfather had stated that he knew him and that not only was he a friend but a relative also. You have provided the proof that I could not find. Her grandfather descends from Francisco Madrid de la Rocha and Maria Lucrecia Vasquez. Do you have more information on this couples ancestors? I had completed a couple more generations on Maria Lucrecia Vasquez line but hit a roadblock on Francisco Madrid de la Rocha.

I descend from a branch of the Ramirez from San Miguel el Alto but I am going to have to look at more closely to see if there is any connection. I descend from a Nicolas Ramirez.

I want to reward you for this work. I am going to treat you to dinner to celebrate.
Keep up your excellent and inspirational work primo,

Rick

Glad they were useful to you. What I posted was an experiment…an exercise to see how it would look. It was ONLY the first FIVE generations of his ancestry. And yes!!! I have done more research. I am amplifying the basic report and “playing” with options, features, items to include, sources, notes, and images. It would look nicer as a PDF with pictures and transcribed documents and pedigree charts. Which of course gave me the idea, “¿Por qué no?” An expanded report with a table of contents indicating each of the generations, specific ancestors in bold print, all the corresponding sources, images, and documents, would not only make a great resource for Nuestros Ranchos, but also of a book. It has given me ideas as to how to share/publish what I have researched.

This gave me the idea to begin a series called “LAS GENEALOGIAS DE ALTEÑOS ILUSTRES” where I would provide a very thorough analysis of the genealogy a particular “Alteño/Alteña Ilustre” or, if not technically an Alteño/a, then at least descending from Alteño patriarchal families. This latter category would include the ancestries of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, general of Alta California, Jaime Holcombe-Isunza, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, father of Mexican Independence, and José López Portillo, (ex) Presidente de México. That would present a great way for me to share what I have researched and share it with all Alteños.

En lo que se trata a Victoriano Ramírez López, “El Catorce”…his direct paternal ancestry presents us with the correction of a widely published error which I want to bring out to the light so it can be demolished. In Generation 5, ancestor #16, “Juan-Joseph Miguel Ramírez-Martín, born 7 May 1754 in La Cajuela, San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, México. He was the son of Miguel Ramírez-Martín and María-Teresa Márquez.” Most have correct data up to him and that’s all, because beyond him…is a mystery!!! The direct paternal ancestry of Ramírez…viene de un “hijo de padres no conocidos”…so there it ends.

You see in the marriage record of Miguel Ramírez-Martín and María-Teresa Márquez in 1744 in San Juan de los Lagos, it clearly reads that Miguel Ramírez-Martín was “hijo de padres no conocidos”—they are not mentioned at all. Miguel was mentioned in his marriage acta as “Miguel MARTÍN” and other times as “Miguel Martín del Campo”. I believe his natural mother was a Martín del Campo. Several baptismal entries refer to Miguel as Miguel Martín. A few and then years later, the surname RAMÍREZ appears in usage. This makes me think that later Miguel recognized his natural father’s parentage and began to use Ramírez. I don’t know if the surname is actually Ramírez de Hermosillo, or some “other” Ramírez. That is why I refer to this individual and his generation as Ramírez-Martín, because both surnames were used. If there is a Dispensa where both the Ramírez-Martín connections are explained, I have not yet found it.

López de los Reyes is the surname that connects me with El Catorce. It is both of our maternal ancestral surnames. As such, we share the same ancestors starting with Generation No. 3, (#6) Francisco López Maciel, and more precisely Generation No. 4, (#12 and #13, and all subsequent ancestors…12x2=24 & 25; 13x2=26 &27…and so on). Francisco López Maciel is the brother of my great-great grandfather, Inocencio López Maciel.

I do not have Francisco Madrid de la Rocha as an ancestor, nor have I really investigated his origins in Guanajuato, but I have of María-Lucrecia Vásquez, born ca. 1768 in Ayo el Chico, Jalisco, México. She was the daughter of Luis Antonio Gonzaga Vásquez y Machuca and Anna-Marcela Díaz y Rizo. Luis Antonio Gonzaga Vásquez’s Vásquez ancestors are my ancestors also. I descend from Cristóbal Vásquez and Petronila Padilla, vecinos de Jalostotitlán.

Hasta pronto,
Steven Francisco Hernández López

Thank you again for sharing Steve,
I have a possible correction or maybe I am in error, plus a few other facts.
First the discrepancy
I have Jose Francisco Madrid de la Rocha as the son of Josef Andres Madrid de la Rocha and his wife Antonia Teresa Rangel (you have him as the son of another Francisco Madrid de la Rocha.)
Now for the additions:
1) Jose Damacio de Guadalupe c. 17dec1803 married to Maria Viviana Hernandez on 7feb1842 in San Miguel el Alto
2) Ma.Josefa Rocha married on 27apr1811 to Marcelino Lupercio in San Miguel el Alto
3) Jose de Jesus Rocha c.1nov1801 married on 9may1821 to Estefana Reynoso in Jalostotitlan
4) Maria Francisca Rocha c.18apr1799 married on 18Jan1824 to Agustin Padilla in Jalostotitlan
5) Ma.Bacilia Rocha married Dionisio Sanchez on 27oct1807 in Jalostotitlan
6) Ma. Rafaela Rocha c. 7nov1794 in Arandas and married to Jose Marcos Zavala (Sabala) on 28jul1811 in Jalostotitlan
7) Maria de San Jose Rocha c. 29sep1805

Jose Damacio de Gpe Madrid de la Rocha is the father of Cecilio Rocha married 11May 1870 Petra (Petronila) Aldana (daughter of Jose Manuel Aldana and Maria Trinidad Ramirez
They are the parents of Ciriaco Rocha born 1871 in San Miguel el Alto and married to Maximiana Gutierrez Campos(daughter of Felipe de Jesus Gutierrez ( son of Bacilio Gutierrez and Maria de Jesus Munoz) and Maria Campos (Martin del Campo-Pedrosa)( daughter of Jose Luis Deonicio Martin del Campo and Ma. Vicenta Florencia Pedrosa
This was the second marriage for both Ciriaco and Maximiana
They were the parents of Margarita Rocha Gutierrez who married Paulo (Pablo) Lomelin
Pablo Lomeli (n) and Margarita are my wife's maternal grandparents.
It was my wife's maternal grandmother that is related to you and el Catorce, not her maternal grandfather. He said that Victoriano was his friend. Pablo Lomelin was in his nineties when I met him about 30 years ago. He still sometimes added the n to Lomeli.
Maximianas first marriage was to Doroteo Vasquez and they had a son Jose Ysabel Vasquez Gutierrez

Maria Viviana Hernandez was baptized on the 8Jan1817 in Jalostotitlan
I only had Luis Antonio Vasquez s parents I did not have Ana Marsela Maria Diaz parents.

I wonder how often you come up related to my wife.
Thanks again for contributing so much of your work
Rick A Ricci

This descendancy is not complete. The major focus in its compilation was to connect Jose Damacio Madrid de la Rocha Vasquez to my wife's maternal grandmother, Margarita Rocha Gutierrez.

Hello Steve,

I believe that your explanation of the Ramirez Martin last names is correct. This same explanation is used in my records to explain a line of the Lomelin De La Cruz married also to a Marquez. This marriage actually gave a partial explanation of how they were related so the padre desconocidos grandfather is revealed. A full explanation of the relationship between bride and groom wasn't given but did state that they were 3rd cousins which leads to skipping a generation for the groom. His grandfather is listed only as Lomelin with no first name but we can deduce who this unknowns grandfather by the relationship degree given.

Another case of padres desconocido is the one of Francisco Madrid de la Rocha Rangel I remember seeing a record that said that but then I found the marriage dispensation that lists his parents.

My wife also has a Ramirez Martin ancestral line about the same time and same place but in this case the father Jose Maria Ramirez is the one with padres desconocidos.

I went back and looked at my information and my roadblock is not on Francisco Madrid de la Rocha, but his father Andres Madrid de la Rocha. A few years back I had originally had Francisco as the son of another Francisco but I corrected this data when, thanks to Claudia, I found their marriage dispensation. I believe that we both originally may have been misinformed by Jaime Holcombe. I found the marriage dispensation with the same film # as Salvador Clemente De La Torre' s marriage dispensation. (1787 film # 168072), (image 237). I was sidetracked and have never printed out the dispensation or read it entirely. I forgot completely about it and had only added Andres and his wife to my family tree. Lucrecias info in my tree is only what was in their marriage record. I will print the dispensation and decipher it hopefully this week. I bet I was so happy to find Salvador Clemente de la Torre s marriage dispensation that I put francisco and Lucrecias aside and forgot to get back to it. I had been looking for Salvador Clemente de la Torre's information for decades.

One record does look like it says Jose Francisco Madrid de la Rocha but looking at other records where the writing is clearer I believe it says Andres instead of Francisco. The author writes his A with a flourish that is more common as an F and the smudge in the ink makes it look more like Francisco.

Mariano Gonzalez leal names the parents of Victoriano. He has a different name, carlos, for the father than other people have that claim to be his nephews and nieces. they claim the father's name is gabriel ramirez. Does anyone have anything else to add? does anyone have a marriage record of Victoriano's marriages?

Thank you both. I understand the dispensa process much better than I did a month ago and I believe those are located in the información matrimonial? But, are there clues in the basic marriage records on Family Search that would suggest there is a dispensa available? Are there specific clues to look for?

Hi Paige,
Yeah it will say on the marriage record whether a dispensa
is required. Here is an example from the Diaz de Leon/Carrillo marriage I was
just recently looking at: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15246-26036-84?cc=1804458&wc…
You can see that the impediment here that requires a
dispensa is for third degree of consanguinity, which I think makes them second
cousins. It’s because of that blood relationship between them that they’re
required to request a dispensa from the Archbishop of Guadalajara to be allowed
to marry.
Also, since I last looked at the baptism of Doña Michaela de Acosta and Don Joseph Tomas Muñoz Gonzalez de Hermosillo’s children, I found two
more children, so I think they must’ve had about 13 children, although, I’m not
sure how many survived to be adults.

Hi Alicia,

I descend from them on my mother's side, so I don't know whether it would solve the puzzle. Plus, I descend from the other Pedroza's and Acosta's on my father's side and I'm not familiar enough with DNA to know whether it would help or whether my other Acosta and Pedroza connections would just confuse the situation. Armando probably could better answer that question.

Have any of you who believe you descend from this paternal and maternal
lineage, ever considered taking dna tests to see if you're connected by DNA?

I actually don't have a lot of time to really get into this discussion because I have to be in homeroom shortly, Plus I also don’t know who the parents of Don Francisco de Acosta or Doña Theresa de Pedroza are, but they are my 7th great grandparents, and I thought I’d mention I’ve asked about this couple before and never received a response, so, I think you’re message worked, I’m just not sure anyone in the group has any information on who their parents might be. Hopefully, maybe you can find something I haven’t been able to. But, I also am pretty sure Don Francisco de Acosta was never married to Doña Theresa de Pedroza. Armando is right, both the marriage and the Información Matrimonial for Don Joseph Thomas Muñoz González de Hermosillo and Doña Michaela de

I’ve seen it before, but can’t seem to access the site on my new computer for some reason, but, I don’t believe it has any specific information on her parents, or anything really significant, but, I can’t recall.

I actually also descend from a Don Francisco de Acosta that married one of the Fernández de Palos and from a Doña Theresa de Pedroza that also married one of the Fernández de Palos each of them born in the 1720s which would make them perfect candidates to be the parents of Michaela de Acosta born in 1751, except for the fact that they were married to other people. I don’t know what their relationship is to the Don Francisco de Acosta and Doña Theresa de Pedroza that are the parents of Michaela de Acosta y Pedroza, if any at all, except that they have the same names and live in the same region and the same timeframe.

Hello Paige,

The marriage record of José Tomás Muñoz González De Hermosillo at El

Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes on August 16, 1769 shows him
marrying Michaela de Pedroza hija natural de María Teresa de Pedroza.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12126-33354-49?cc=1502404&…
do you know that her father was Francisco de Acosta? Since the mother
wasn't mentioned as being married there is probably not a marriage record,
información matrimonial record, or dispensa that will allow you do
determine the parents of either Francisco de Acosta or Teresa de Pedrosa.

You might end up having to search for a dispensa of descendants of José
Tomás Muñoz González De Hermosillo
and Micaela de Pedroza/Acosta to find
the grandparents of Micaela.

Hello everyone,

Chris, there have been people that have been successful at triangulating on
ancestors that aren't from a direct paternal or maternal line using the
Family Finder autosomal DNA test at FamilyTreeDNA. Autosomal DNA is
inherited from multiple ancestors, not just those on the direct paternal or
maternal lines. Unfortunately there are no success stories for anyone in
our region, that I know of, that have identified a missing ancestor by
triangulating with autosomal DNA. This is because of missing documentation,
missing gedcoms, and too few participants. Due to that and since it seems
your ancestry does not include the missing ancestors on your direct
maternal or paternal side you are correct that DNA testing probably won't
help you in this specific case.

If you were to get Y-DNA and mtDNA tests you could possibly help others
identify ancestors since you seem to have well documented ancestry. There
have been multiple success stories of people with a brick wall in their
paternal line being able to identify their genetic ancestor even though the
surname is different due to a DNA match with others that have well
documented ancestry and match others of the same surname that have well
documented ancestry. Louis Jaime posted one example of that. Your
participation would also help others with Cuéllar ancestors find out what
haplogroup that line belongs to. We are trying to determine the Y-DNA
haplogroups of all of the surnames in Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, and
Jalisco in the Nueva Galicia DNA project and your participation, as well as
anyone else that has not done so, would be very much appreciated.

If you, or anyone else, is interested you can order tests and join the
Nueva Galicia DNA project at
https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?&group=NuevaGaliciaDNA&vG…

For Y-DNA you can start off with a 12 marker test but in most cases that
isn't enough to focus in on closed matches so a Y-DNA37 marker test is
preferred. The mtDNA test is less likely to help but it could. With Family
Finder you could end up finding some genetic relatives through ancestors
that aren't only on the direct paternal or maternal line. Having both
parents tested is better if they are willing to do it. It will also tell
you your percentage of Indian ancestry. The other ancestries aren't correct
because the calculator is outdated, it's missing many tested populations,
and various other reasons. The same file can be used with other calculators
though.

Y-DNA results can be viewed publicly at

Armando,

Thanks for the information. I knew you'd have the answer. I hadn't really thought about taking the DNA test before, but, if it can help others, maybe I will. But, my dad died a long time ago though, so only I'd be able to take it. Regarding finding ancestor matches of a different surname, I do think that would be the case. I have seen a few instances on the Cuellar side where it seems they assumed that name over the actual paternal name. As an example Juan Crisostomo de Cuellar married Maria Raphaela del Refugio Alonso and gave the Cuellar name to his descendants, but as you can see from this baptism of one of his children https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18564-24706-50?cc=1874591&wc…

his fathers name is actually Perez and it's his mothers name that he uses. I'm aware of at least a few other surname changes too. Regarding, Indian ancestry, does it break it down among specific Indian groups like Caxcanes, Zacatecos, etc.?

Chris,

The example is one reason surnames change. There are also cases of hijos
naturales or hijos de padres no conocidos where the child is given a random
surname or that of the owner of the ranch, or the surname of the family
that raised the child.

Is the example you provided from your direct paternal line? If it is there
is a possibility you will match one of the people that have already tested
the Y-DNA line.

No, the Indian ancestry is not broken up into individual groups for our
region. The groups they tested and compare us against in any of the
calculators comes from the Human Genetic Diversity Project at the
University of Stanford by Li et al. and the populations are Maya, Pima,
Colombian, Karitiana, and Surui. Some of the autosomal SNP markers that we
carry are more common in Colombians than Mayans and some of us get labeled
as being part Colombian even though our Indian ancestors have always been
in Mexico. This means that some of our ancestors had descendants that went
south to Colombia and not the opposite. The same for Maya, we don't descend
from them, and for Pima except we probably descend from ancestors of the
Pima. This is where the calculators get the results wrong because the
database is limited and they don't take into consider ancient population
movements. The good thing is that initially that portion is just labeled
Native American by FTDNA and that initial part is correct with that general
label.

Hi Armando,

Yes, that is from my paternal side. It seems very interesting, especially learning about my Native American ancestry. I'll definitely read over all the material you provided.

In looking at my records, I found a marriage that may help solve the relationship between Thomas and Nicolas Macias. Their respective grandchildren, Salvador Macias Ruiz de Esparza and Maria Macias Ruiz de Esparza, married in Aguascalientes on March 9, 1734. I was able to locate the marriage record in Pilot, and the 'dispensa' of their consanguinity is mentioned. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the "Informacion Matrimonial", where I was expecting to see info on the grandparents relationship. I wonder if anyone can help accessing this information from the Sagrada Mitra?

Muchas Gracias Celestino; Thanks John and Daniel. I also found in NR archives a reply (21 Dec 2006) from Bill Figueroa to Daniel regarding the Elizalde family. Regading the Nicolas and Thomas Macias Valades I'll keep on looking for clues.

Has anyone ever found the source for Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza's parents? I dont know how Jose Luis Vasquezcame to that conclusion, I dont disregard it but just wonder the source. I have studied the Mendoza family, undoubtfully one of the most important families in all of Nueva Galicia. I have Genealogias de Nochistlan (thanksto a good friend) and it says Inigo Lopez de Mendoza and Maria Laso de Mendoza were ambos de Nochistlan. So they actually did live in Nochistlan according to the book. Even don Mariano Gonzalez Leal is still puzzledat this line, we still cannot trace or connect our Mendoza to those of Spain with full documentation, probdue to the lack of records in the early years of the colony. Any comments?

Daniel, Celestino and others,
I was checking the timeline to associate Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza as the daughter of the first marques of Mondejar, Iñigo Lopez de Mendoza y Quiñonez (1440-1515), and simply it does not match. The second problem is that the first's marques wife was Francisca Pacheco, and not Maria Laso de Mendoza. Now, Inigo was the grandchild of Inigo Lopez de Mendoza y Lasso (1398-1458), first marques de Santillana. I wonder if the association of the Lasso surname to Isabel's mother was used to identify her as the marques' daughter. However, more importantly, is that none of the marques of Mondejar lived in Mexico (although Antonio de Mendoza is identified in some publications as holding that title). Antonio de Mendoza, New Spain's first Viceroy, was son of the first marques. He apparently did not left any decendants in Mexico or Peru (although other relatives may have stayed in the Americas). I urge you to visit the site of Jose L.G. de Paz of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, where he compiles numerous works on the genealogy (often controversial) and biographies of the Mendozas (http://www.uam.es/personal_pdi/ciencias/depaz/mendoza/sigloxv.htm).

Celestino.

I have Tomas' parents as:
Pedro Macias Valades & Luisa Solano de Villegas.
I know Nicolas' parents have been debated. Some claims as to be being married twicewith Francisca Gutierrez de Mendoza cannot be becuase it conflicts with the childrens baptisms. A man couldnt be married to two woman at the same time. I believe they re not the sameNicolas. It had to be another Nicolas, a close relative.

If Felipe was born Aug. of 1856 in San Miguel El Alto then his surname is Alderete Anda and not Anda Alderete. The paternal surname goes first and the maternal surname goes last.

The same goes for Santiago, if his father's surname was Torres and his mother's surname was Guerra then his surname was Torres Guerra and not Guerra Torres.

The birth record of Santiago should name his grandparents. Are they not named in it?

Regards
Armando

Thank you for the naming information. Santiago's grandparents are not listed in the birth record. Just his parents, their ages, where they were a resident of and the witnesses.

researching my husband's family. His great-grandparents were Manuel Mejia and
Francisca Rosales from Tepetongo, Zacatecas. Manuel and Francisca were married
2/10/1877 in Tepetongo and had 12 children, all baptised in Tepetongo (Marciala,

Kansas City, Kansas. Fidel was my husband's grandfather and his grandmother

I appreciate the opportunity to expand my knowledge of my son's heritage as I

Mary,

Welcome to the group. I am sure that you will find lots of help and
suggestions from the group members.

I did take a look at the information, that you have posted in the group, in
regards to your husband's family Tree. I was able to go from Manuel Mejia
back 7 generations. I have sent a copy of the ancestor report to your
email. There is a lot of information there, and lot of it still needs to
be proven. That means that you need to look up each event, such as birth
records, baptisms, and marriages. The quickest way to look them up is to
use the FamilySearch site, and the records are in Spanish. So have fun,
looking for your family.

Hi Mary,

Welcome to NuestrosRanchos. You'll learn so much from being a member. I didn't know anything about my family because my dad died when I was little but now after being a member for just a couple of months I've added so many ancestors to my tree and learned so much about my family and my heritage. And, everyone is so helpful here. Joining this group is the best thing I've ever done in my life.

Hello my name is Brian Gilbert Gutierrez. I am excited to be a member of Nuestros Ranchos. My Aunt and I have been involved in our familiy's genealogy work for some time. Our roots go from New Mexico to Colotlan, Mexico, and Tlaltenango, Mexico. We are currently as far back as the mid 1600's. I look forward to participating.

Hello everyone,I am currently looking for Maria Feliciana Duran's marriage record.I went through all available marriage records from her time period for Nochistlan, Jalpa, Juchilipa and Apozol.

José Nolasco Fernández de Villalpando

I was able to find new information on my ancestor José Nolasco Fernández de Villalpando and may appear to be related to the same Villalpando family of Aguascalientes and Guanajuato.
