"Calavera Highway" - on PBS

Just wondering if anyone else had seen the documentary, "Calavera Highway", a 'Point of View' (POV) documentary that aired on PBS (I saw it last night, Sep 16), but others may have seen it the night before last. This is not a genealogical story, but it is a family history story. The following is a brief description of the documentary:

Hi Natalie,

Yes, I caught the ending of the show last night and became intrigued. So after it ended I logged on to the site and read up. I am going to try and catch the complete documentary when it re-airs.

Reiteradas gracias y saludos,

Víctor Manuel Ortiz Martínez.

The value of our work...

Hello all. I'd like to share a short personal anectdote, which I am sure most of you will appreciate.

My grandfather visited us this week; he lives in norther California, we live in Southern California. Basically, I started my research after his visit last summer, when I interviewed him on his family history. It had been a year since I last saw him and had not shared any of my genealogical research because I wanted to share the details with him in person.

Claudia,
I, too, had the privelege of talking with my father about his years in
Jalostotitlan, his family, the stories, etc. I recorded him as he
shared many of his stories. When I showed him a copy of the family
tree dating back to the 1500's, he was overcome. He kept the tree in a
"safe" place so he could bring it out to share when a relative came
over. The greatest "find" however, was a copy of a border crossing in
Texas of his father when his father was only 17 years old. My dad
cried to see his dad's signature and that he had $20 on his person. My
dad was diagnosed in December with recurring bladder cancer and was
given 6 weeks to live. He died on January 18,2008 at the age of 81. I
am so grateful to my friend, Gloria, and my Tia Regina from Sacramento
for getting me started in this search of my family's ancestors. I just
hope I can get others involved in the research because it is very
time-consuming and I find I have less and less time.

As an aside, I want to thank all of you for sharing your research. I
have found many connections with the Gutierrez, Reynoso, Perez, Hurtado
de Mendoza, Hermosillo, etc. It is all fascinating to me.

Gracias,
Eloise Gomez Reyes

I have amassed 250 years of documentation of his direct relatives from
Moyahua, Zacatecas. His reaction to my findings was priceless! It was
pure joy to see his face light up at the mention of some of his aunts'
and uncles' names that he had forgotten; he's 81 after all!
He was also very surprised that many of his ancestors had "mixed" with
some of the other families in Moyahua. Mostly because he said he never
knew he descended from such-and-such (surname), as there are many
residents in Moyahua with such-and-such surname and most certainly his
relatives!

He laughed, cried, and I literally imagined my grandfather as he might
have been in his prime. A side of him that I had never seen.

Let us not forget our elders and to those of us who are fortunate
enough to still have them with us - let us spend as much time as we
possibly can with them.

Hola Primo Ronnie:

John Gonzalez

This is totally true! Which is obviously a bit racist! But we come from Europeans it the so called "moda" at the time. -Daniel

What a wonderful anecdote! You are so blessed to have been able to
share with your grandfather. My father and all of my uncles are gone
now. All 4 of my tias are still alive but they don't really care. My
Tia Carmen is the one who I call frequently to ask questions of but
she gets tired of me asking, so I step back a little. But sometimes
she reacts like Claudia's grandfather--with delight and joy and more
information.
My Tia Aurora tells me about people but i have found that she is
"touchy" if I ask her who told her that or how does she know. Tia
Offie is very ill and has had a ministroke and my Tia Vera, the
youngest, suffers from dementia.

Let this be a lesson to all of us...SHARE your info with your
relatives even if they don't want to hear it!!!!!! Marge:)

Hello all. I'd like to share a short personal anectdote, which I am

My grandfather visited us this week; he lives in norther California,
we live in Southern California. Basically, I started my research
after his visit last summer, when I interviewed him on his family
history. It had been a year since I last saw him and had not shared
any of my genealogical research because I wanted to share the details
with him in person.
I have amassed 250 years of documentation of his direct relatives from
Moyahua, Zacatecas. His reaction to my findings was priceless! It
was pure joy to see his face light up at the mention of some of his
aunts' and uncles' names that he had forgotten; he's 81 after all!
He was also very surprised that many of his ancestors had "mixed" with
some of the other families in Moyahua. Mostly because he said he
never knew he descended from such-and-such (surname), as there are
many residents in Moyahua with such-and-such surname and most
certainly his relatives!

He laughed, cried, and I literally imagined my grandfather as he might
have been in his prime. A side of him that I had never seen.

Let us not forget our elders and to those of us who are fortunate
enough to still have them with us - let us spend as much time as we
possibly can with them.

Buenas noches.

Well said. You are so fortunate that you can share all your descoveries with
your grandfather. Unfortunately, I started into this about a year too late.
My father would have reacted just like your grandfather. It think of him
each time I make a new connection. He had no idea that his mothers
lineage,he would have been so proud.

Rincon de Romos is in Aguascalientes. Aguascalientes was, however, part of
the state of Zacatecas.

Maria,

I looked up the couple in question but could not find anything on either of them. Both Jose and JOseph Gonzalez de Hermosillo and just Gonzalez turned up zero for the husband. I tried Mora and just Hurtado/Hurtado de Mendoza for the wife. Since you gave a date, I checked by date from 1746 - 1750, but still found nothing. Sorry.

Perhaps I just overlooked something and someone else might give it a try.

Hi Anna,

Thank you and Connie very much for checking. Neither of you could
find this record in the book, so I think it must not have been
extracted. The page in the original book could very well have been
destroyed. When I looked at some of those microfilms I noticed that
some of them had a note saying that it was composed of loose pages or
that some pages were torn.

Gracias prima, and I will see you at our next meeting.

Guenter,

Bon voyage tomorrow. How exciting your trip sounds.

I found the link above that I found in your message below to be very enlightening about how one can possibly trace ancestors in Europe, not through church records that only go back to the Reformation in the 1400s, but through tax books, court records, minutes of manorial systems, subject lists, soldiers' pay books, mercenary lists, prisoner lists, etc. I also now understand how knights (professional soldiers) went into civil service as castellans (royal military civil servants, with no royal titles, of the sovereigns).

Correcting IGI Mistake

Members Having Trouble Getting or Sending Messages to the List

There have been a number of members who have recently been "unsubscribed" from the mailing lists or have stopped getting email messages from the list.

One reason we have identified for this is the server being used to send out the listserv messages is a dedicated listserv server that hosts mailing lists for a number of different organizations, not just Nuestros Ranchos. All such messages come stamped with the server name and IP and the server has been put on a "black list" of anti-spam filters.

Daniel,
I hope that you take my comments in the helpful manner in which they are intended. If you are truly concerned about offending people with racist comments, then please stop. It's unsettling that a young person appears to embrace such views and seems to take delight in flaunting them. Certainly, as a member of this group, I honor and appreciate my ancestors--Basque and others, but I won't perpetuate their mistakes. Today, informed and self-confident people throughout the world embrace and celebrate diversity. They don't fear it. Best wishes, Alice B. Blake

Yes, Daniel,

It is unsettling and tiresome, this reiteration of the superiority felt by some "Spaniards". We are left to wonder why you take such delight in repeating it, and I question your self-confidence; but I understand that you are so young and have much to learn yet. We are all aware of racism everywhere, it is unproductive to dwell on it. You have so much to offer at your age, your future is ahead of you; don't get sidetracked with an uninformed obsession that doesn't reflect well on you. You admire royalty and royals have the best manners, and would never point out such differences. I hope you appreciate our well-intended remonstrance. I am much happier embracing diversity, and like Alice says, I don't perpetuate my Mexican Basque father's prejudices. People can't be happy when they are always tense about the color of people around them. Best to look at people's character, than their complexion; one has nothing to do with the other.

Daniel,
I hope that you take my comments in the helpful manner in which they are intended. Blake

nadie estaría dispuesto a confesarlo.

https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/ .

Nosotros somos
inteligentes, ellos son tontos. Nosotros somos hermosos, ellos son feos.
Ellos están equivocados, nosotros tenemos la razón. Ellos hacen cosas
horribles y despreciables, nosotros hacemos cosas bellas y edificantes.

Manorial System (similar to Encomienda)

Hola amigos de Nuestros Ranchos,

on the 15th of this month we will go again to the homeland of my family to preside among others an international competition of high school students in history from Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany. The title will be: "Silesian Castles and Palaces". The event will take place at Schloss Tannhausen http://www.jedlinka.pl/ . I will represent the family Boehm, owners until the end of Wold War II in 1945.

Mexican-American Family Integration

In light of recent discussions on this site about ethnicity in Mexico, here is an interesting article titled "Extended Family Integration Among Euro and Mexican Americans: Ethnicity, Gender, Class" that I thought might be interesting to those of us in the US with Euro and Mexican ancestors. Bienvenido Víctor.

Victor,

San Juan De Los Lagos: Francisco Diaz/Maria deSan Jose Gutierres

Joseph, I have both, Gutierrez and Dias in my mother's side of the family; however, they are from Ocotlan and surrounding areas. I was just curious if San Juan de Los Lagos was close to Guadalajara, if so we could have a connection at some point.

I'm kind of reaching with the Dias here. Juana Rosalia Dias in the below record went on to raise a family with her husband in the Colotlan area and I was wondering if possibly they were related to my Dias that came from the Tlaltenango area (Cuculiten). Just curious.
