More recent records or IGI batch numbers for Rincon de Romos, Ags.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum but but have been researching my family history for a while. I am currently a bit lost and hoping for some feedback. I'm looking for the Romo family from Rincon de Romos, Ags. in the late 1880s or early 1900s.

Minerva, have you tried locating birth or christening information for your
father? And if he was married or had children in Zacatecas (or anywhere in
Mexico), you might find his parents' and even grandparents' names on the
IGI.

My grandfather was born somewhere in Aguascalientes (most likely Rincon de
Romos) in the early 1900s. His name was Isidro Romo. He moved to Juchipila
Zacatecas, where my father was born in 1939. I don't have his parents name,
which makes the search more difficult.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get this information? Thanks

Minerva

This is not the info you were looking for or the connection but I had to respond becasue you are so close.

My grandfather Isidor Romo born 1904 in Encarcion De Diaz/Caquiste. I was able to find his father Manuel Romo by looking up Isidor's siblings marriage certificates and of course the Mormon websites were quite helpful as they pinned down the town he was from.

Hi Cristobal,

I have some info on VILLALOBOS from Teocaltiche and La Chona on my database.
I'll go through the info on your email this afternoon and I'll get back to
you in a while. I'm pretty much stuck on Pedro Villalobos (natural son of
Margarita Villalobos), married to Maria Apolinar Reyes Serna.

Agapito Villalobos and Rosa Gomez lived in Valle de Guadalupe around 1900.

Saludos,

Dear David Delgado could you check in the film if come the weddings of Nicolas Lomelín y Ana Maria Martin, also Miguel Santos Romo y Ana Maria Ochoa around 1778-1782. Fernando Villalobos y Maria Nicolasa Losano around 1790 and maybe we can found their parents.
Thanks for all your help.

Cristobal,

I am including the marriage data I discovered in the IGI for the Romo/Ochoa family. You can see that most of them are from Lagos. It looks like the family started in San Juan de los Lagos, went to Lagos, then to Encarnacion.

The Villalobos/Lozano marriage is not in film #1155497. My guess is that their marriage is recorded somewhere else. The film starts with the year 1778. That seems to be the oldest records for Encarnacion. I would try finding them in Aguas or other locations with records older than 1778. I am including the data of four of their children.

I find nothing for Nicolas Lomelin and Ana Maria Martin in film #1155497. I remember his name because I have been researching the Lomelin name for several years. I will look in my notes to see if I may have something there. The Lomelin families in my family tree are all non-European. They married with Briones, Espitia, Magdaleno. I have become so familiar with the records around Encarnacion that it was easy and relaxing to do these lookups for you.

Tonight I will scan and email you the records I found in #1155497: the marriage records of Antonio de Lomelin/Tomasa Romo and of Marcelino Villalobos/Rita Lopes. If you get a chance, let me know if your email service has a size limit on messages. If I don't hear from you I'll send them separately to your personal address.

Good luck to you and let me know if there might be any more ancestors on the marriage film #1155497. I'm still marching through it. I am answering in English because you seem to prefer that language. I can write in Spanish if you like.

David, I have been a member for a while, but personal matters are keeping me from pursuing extensively my ancestral history. But I have followed your wonderful work with awe. Your mention of the Romo family in Encarnación suggests a connection with my family from that area. I have learned from the registros parroquiales of Encarnación de Díaz (film #1155499) that my GGGGF José de los Santos Romo de Vivar y Cornejo was married on 29 May 1861 to María Guadalupe Pedroza. I have extensive family documentation of Santos life, some of it written by his wife, but only the names of his antecedents.

In those parish records, Santos' parents are listed as Pablo Romo (my GGGGGF) and María de la Asención Cornejo, whose marriage is documented in registros parroquiales for José Pablo Romo(christened 28 Mar 1807, per film #1155173 Batch No: C602692, married 18 Nov 1822 in Encarnación).

And finally, the following record from the registros parroquiales of Encarnación de Díaz , which lists the father and mother of José Pablo Romo, as well as his grandparents.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
: Jose Pablo ROMO VILLALOBOS
Sex: M

Event(s):
Christening: 28 Mar 1807 Place: Encarnación de Díaz, Jalisco, Mexico

Parents:
Father: Gregorio ROMO
Mother: Dolores VILLALOBOS

Grandparents:
Father's Father: Bernabe ROMO
Father's Mother: Gertrudis FRANCO
Mother's Father: Manuel VILLALOBOS
Mother's Mother: Josefa ARANDA
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have documented the marriage of Gregorio and Dolores in the registros parroquiales, but my ability to trace my family back into the 18th century stops at Bernabe and Gertrudis, and Manuel and Josefa. I cannot find them in records from Encarnación de Díaz and am guessing that they were neither born nor married in Encarnación. Do you have any information about this branch of the Romo de Vivar family or the other associated families (Cornejo, Villalobos, Franco, Aranda and Pedroza) which would set me on course into the 18th century?

Hello Karr,

I looked in the IGI and yes, the record of the ROMO/CORNEJO marriage is in the film I have on loan at the Oakland FHC. I'm not sure whether or not I'll be at the FHC before Tuesday night next. For sure I can email you a scan of the record from the film, #1155497, next week.

I found the marriage of Romo De Vivar/ Franco in Tepatitlan, see below. The marriage of Villalobos/Aranda is in the Lagos de Moreno records. I listed the IGI info and some baptisms below. Talk to you later.

If I'm not mistaken the Lomeli are from Genova, Italy. I'm pretty sure this is
what I recall from the genealogy conference in Valle de Guadalupe this year.

Carlos de Lomelin (or Lomellini) arrived in Mexico when Italy was under
Spanish domination (1559 to 1713). I have a quotation in my database that
reads "el genovés Carlos de Lomelín casó en Mexticacán en 1609 con Maria de
Benavides. Fue traficante de esclavos. Se establecieron en San Nicolás."
It is a well known fact that Carlos de Lomelín was born in the italian
kingdom of Genova (Reyno de Génova) ca. 1584. He married Maria de
Benavides, a native of Mexticacán, ca. 1609. Their sons Domingo, Lucas,
Carlos, and daughters Juana and María de Lomelín, were born in Mexticacan
between 1610-1630 and probably baptized in Nochistlan, only a few miles
away.

Spain ruled Europe during the reign of Carlos I of Spain (Carlos V of
Germany) and his son Phelipe II. The children of Carlos de Lomelin, all
born in Mexico, were considered "españoles criollos". The surname in Mexico
has been shortened to Lomeli. My good friend Ing. Jorge Caire Lomeli is a
descendant of Carlos de Lomelin. He was one of the top engineers with Pemex
when I met him in Poza Rica a long time ago.

I count at least seven (7) people from Mexico with the surname Lomelin. All of them labeled 'yndio/a lavorio/a'. My conclusion is that some people with the Lomelin surname are not of European ancestry. My second conclusion is that any statement to the effect that all Lomelin-surnamed folks are European are misinformed. I'll stop before I lose my patience.

I am sure Lomelini is from ITaly, about the indígenas being Lomelini, I believe it might be since
it was custom for slaves to take on their "master's" surname, it is possible a mulatto line. Mine aare usually registered as Español, eventhough their italian, in México all white people would be
considered spanish eventhough their actually portuguese or italian, french, etc. -Daniel

Aguayo y Los Aguayos

I have hit the proverbial brick wall on researching the surname Aguayo from the present back to the late 1700s in Aguascalientes. So I decided to try to locate the first Aguayos who came to the New World during the Conquest and work forward from them to see if their was a connection with my research working back. In September 2007, my wife and I visited Cantabria, Spain where legend has the Aguayo surname beginning. Allegedly there were three Goth brothers who participated in the reconquest of Spain during the 12th and 13th centuries. The family gave their name to the region of Aguayo and to three villages -- Santa Olallya de Aguayo, Santa Maria de Aguayo, and San Miguel de Aguayo. We visited all three villages, asked questions about the history of the region, and about the surname. The present villagers knew little about the surname, but we met Manuel Garcia Alonso, who has a home in San Miguel de Aguayo and is a professor at a university in Santander. Alonso has written Aguayo

Santiago Family from Villanueva, Zac

Good Labor Day to all!

I wanted to reach out to the experts in the group for some help with the Santiago family from Villanueva, Zac.  I was so excited to break one more generation last night on the Santiago branch.  Up to now, I was stuck in the Juchipila/Moyahua area.  The couple is named Felipe de Santiago and Maria de la Candelaria Albares.  They were parents to Maria Catarina de Santiago.  Any insight in working the Villanueva area? What other towns can I focus on through Family Search?  The lists of Santiago in the area go on and on so any insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!

Racial and color mis-perceptions

There's a general mis-perception that if you were Español you would have to be white or fair skinned and blonde and blue eyed.

I watch many, many movies that are made throughout latin America and Spain and I have to tell you, based on the movies that I see from Spain, most people in Spain are still mostly brown haired and brown eyed, some blue eyes and some blonde but mostly brown. I also watch many Italian films and have many Italian friends and most are brown eyed and brown haired with a few blonde and blue eyed people, depending on how and with whom they have inter-married.

This is true Alicia, and thanks for switching the topic we were discussing into a seperate post. Spaniards but namly mediterrean europeans tend to be olive skinned and brownish to black hair. Something Ive learned, blonde and the cloured eyes tend to be in the northern part of Spain, so anywhere from Madrid and the north you'' find your usual blonde blue eyed spaniard who speaks spanish, not saying you wont find blondes in the south but somewhat rare. Those south of Madrid are heavily mixed with Jews and Moors. My mothers family comes from Santander and Burgos almost near france, hence our blonde hair. It is funny how almost all spaniard actors are from the south and hence the films that came out. Spain is a very diversed country as well, Galicianos, Cantabrieuanos, Valencianos, Aragoneses, Castellanos, y Vascos. All whom have their own language together they make up what we know is Spanish but each dialect is very different. Vasco or Euskara is the most complicated it is so
me combination of old Norde and Celtic language. -Daniel

Your right Daniel. In the north of Spain they are blonde and more blue eyes and its mainly because the Moors didn't really mix, they couldn't even enter that area up north. It was a different terrain to battle on and the people in the mountains would surprise attack. There are many redheads in the south and if you see a blonde from somewhere else in Spain, generally they are a dark blonde with green eyes. This is what I have encountered when I lived in Madrid for 15 years and traveled all over the country. Like you said Daniel, there are different languages in certain provinces. The Catalanes defend there language and would like to seperate from Spain, considering themselves different from the rest, as the Pais Vasco.
I must say I have never encountered that when I say I am Spanish that the person understands why I am blonde and white. Usually they do not believe me because they believe all spaniards are black hair dark eyed, which the majority is, but the other also exsist.

What a great story, Alicia! You're absolutely right about the majority of Spaniards, Italians, and Mexicans having brown eyes and hair. For many years I've traveled throughout the world and that holds true in most countries. Why some people have such a difficult time accepting this, is beyond me. Genetically, brown is dominant, so it makes sense that most people in the world would have dark coloring. By the way, the last time I checked, brown is a color, so I don't understand why some dismiss brown eyes as not being "colored". Scientifically, hybrid vigor is more desireable; it brings strength and in general the best of both worlds, whereas inbreeding brings problems. Which is why historically, the royalty of the world has experienced intellectual problems and had Arabic tutors to instruct them in the sciences and mathematics that Europeans had no knowledge of. I've just had an AHA moment---my "pure Spanish blood" could explain why I had such a tough time with my advanced university mathematics! LOL! Scientists go on to predict that some time in the not too distant future (as the history of man goes), all people will be brown (as we all were when left Africa). Hopefully, that will put an end to racial/color discrimination. Unfortunately, the need for some to feel superior at the expense of others will always exist and they will shift their attention to other things such as socioeconomics. Again, Alicia thanks for the story and your thoughts. Alice B. Blake

The fact is that the Spanish people were also a mixed breed with the proximity to northern Africa and taking into consideration that the Moros and the Jews had settled in Spain having come from the Arabian Peninsula. Anyone who has read world history has to know that all the nations of great sailors traveled the world, visiting and settling in foreign lands. We have to look at the historical migration patterns and the great diasporas to understand that even in the 1400's and 1500's people came in all colors, shapes, races and sizes.
Even the bible, especially the old testament talks of wars, invasions and migrations from one country to another. I think it's very naive to believe that because we have Mexican ancestry or are from Mexico that we should be a certain color.

The beauty of genealogical research is that we go where the records lead us. It's the discovery of the new and unknown. It's in making the connection with our past, whatever it is and wherever it leads and having the openness to accept those findings.

This journey of discovery and acceptance is what it's all about. Unfortunately I haven't been able to pursue my research due to other commitments but one day soon I will get back to the thrill of the hunt and the joy of finding and connecting with my ancestors. I don't really give a hoot if they were brown haired or blonde, green, blue or brown eyed. I still remember the first time I went to Central Mexico and we arrived in Jalpa Zacatecas. We walked into a bank and were waiting in a very long line. I kept on staring at some young ladies that were near the front of the line. I really don't know why I was staring at them and not at other people in that same line.

After we left the bank, we went into a loncheria, we were with my uncle, my mother's brother and in this loncheria were the young ladies I'd been staring at in the bank. My uncle sees them and says to me, those are your cousins, your primas hermanas, their father is your father's brother. I guess the reason I'd been staring is that we had many resemblances, we looked alike. I still get chills when I think of this day, how I could not take my eyes off my cousins even when I didn't know who they were.

Alicia Carrillo de San Jose, Calif

Dear Corrine--

I loved your email. It reminded me of the discussions I have had about certain members of the family--things like if you are left-handed you are probably with this family, or if you are long and lean in the face, probably from that family, if you have a long torso but short legs, you are from yet another family. Then the eyes are interesting because some have blue or green or brown and look like their so and so cousins.

That is very interesting, our family can trace to the realistas or royalist, :{ I know they were looked down upon for supporting España. This is all "cool" our families had taken part of how México was formed. Miguel Hidalgo, WOW! -Daniel

common research goals

One of the goals in doing genealogy for me is to instill pride and responsibility in the coming years in generations yet to come. As my grandmother told me, "you don't know who you are if you don't know where you come from." She said this at a family reunion where the new generations no longer speak Spanish and had brought many other nationalities into our lines. She cried as she said there would not be a Mexican in the family in 50 years. My research honors her and makes sure we know our roots and sometimes humble and sometimes proud beginnings. My goal is never to loose any part of my heritage even though we sometimes seem to focus on the Spanish lines.

Hi Linda and all, Genealogy I think for is perserving our roots, Castellano is our language and
I think its the most beautiful romance language today. I always remember my siblings and I
"sois mejicanos de desendencia española" Those words I will never forget, Although Like linda
said We do focus on our Spanaird lines alot more b/c of less effort. It is much easier. I do know we recieve alot of discrimination from "Mexican people who dont accept us" Just because we have blonde hair and blue and green eyes we still are Mejicanos of Spanish descent, it has been difficult for all of us to call ourselves Mexican because Mexican sumpremacists (like the Mexica movement and La Raza and others. Who only teach Mexicans are brown but this is untrue we come in all sorts of charateristics. Especially when my parents came to the USA
they were told you're aren't Mexican your people are killers which offends a lot, our ancestors did all that but Im not responsible for that. Like the Mexica movement (a racist Mexican group who dont call themselves LAtino or Hispanic want all Europeans to leave the Americas, I was offended when I was told this. Well that was emotional. :( This seems to be a popular saying for Spaniards "you don't know who you are if you don't know where you come from." I was always told this by all grandparents. We are having our family reunion for the Pérez del Camino
this coming month. Everyone still knows Spanish which is good. Sadley we have know diversity, my parent's families were and still are prejudice to other non-whites they still have strong Los Altos prejudice, my father doesnt except my brother's marriage to a Japanese, English and Spanish and Guamanian women, my mother does wince she is a 1/4 spanish. I remember when I told my mother my dad is like 1% black and and some indian she was surprised but very confused. I am proud of my two black ancestors who worked hard and had to sustain alot on thier shoulders. Over time Linda and I line of mulatto became lwhite again, since spanish made sure they were to do that. I have all my lines back to Spain and other European countries know which I am happy they are completed lines, I only have a handful still in the 1700-1800's and am trying to finish those that would be my goal, before I have kids in the future I will make sure where they know where they come from. I am planning to make an organisation or coalition to combat the Mexica movement in the future, why Cant we all live in harmony all colours of people? Viva España y México!

Hello,
I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. Ever since I was a little girl I can remember kids at school telling me that I was not Mexican because I had blue eyes and blond hair. My dad who is from Jalisco is also Blond and Blue eyed. The told me I was a white girl. Most people thought my mother was Mexican because she had blk hair. I thought it was weird because she was so fair skinned and had freckles. She is not Mexican. Then I was told that the only reason my grandfather (moms dad) liked my dad instead of my two other Mexican uncles that also married in the family was because of his coloring. As an adult who has been researching my mothers family I have learned all kinds of things about our family. I finally approached my dad about his family, even though we visited them every year until I was 16 and I even lived in Mexico as a child for a short time, I knew nothing about them. I only knew my Grandfather died when my dad was 7 and his mother died when I
was a baby. My dad never taught us Spanish, so I am at quite a disadvantage. Over the years I have encountered people who are Mexican but deny it. I am very proud of my heritage and we all had to come from somewhere, there are no "purebloods" anywhere. I am hoping to learn more about my dads heritage and family, but for now, I am proud to carry my family name.

Daniel and I are both aware that original first and last names were taken from Indigenous and black slave lines and they were given other surnames either by the church or in honor of people they respected or worked for or who owned them or even chance. Daniel and I share the Mendez line since our Mendez gr-grandparents were siblings. We also share black slave lines and Indian lines, we just can't find thier ancestors since they lost their names to "progress." Daniel and I are both very proud of all the ancestors who got us here but to be honest it's easier to trace the Spaniards so they sometimes appear to be our only focus. I wish I had been 14 years old like Daniel (who is our youngest member) when I started researching instead of having to wait until I retired to have the time and money to pursue this passion. With Nuestros Ranchos we get to share, feel pride and share the responsibility of finding correct and truthful information even when the
truth makes us uncomfortable or surprises us.

I hope we never loose or focus or common goal.

I am sure Lomelini is from ITaly, about the indígenas being Lomelini, I
believe it might be since
it was custom for slaves to take on their "master's" surname, it
is possible a mulatto line. Mine aare usually registered as Español, eventhough
their italian, in México all white people would be
considered spanish eventhough their actually portuguese or italian, french,

Hello,

I also have that people look at me oddly when I say I am Spanish or Mexican. People do not understand why I am so white, blue eyed and blonde.
My situation is a bit different with the family, I do not know any close cousins, the only family that I have besides my primos here in Nuestros Ranchos, is a an uncle, a sister, a brother and my daughter. My mother when she was alive made sure we knew what we were and to be proud of our blood, what ever it was. And to discover our culture and educate ourselves always with knowledge, good or bad, and never loosing our language, which could only enhance and give us opportunities in the future. This is what I teach my daughter.

I can relate with you all on some level, but slightly different. I'm of
mixed descent(half Ashkenazi..which is Russian/Polish Jew). My dad is
obviously on the white side of the fence. My mother is a lighter shade of
tan. My aunts, uncles, and grandparents are only a shade or 2 darker than
my mother and I myself am a strange greenish olive color but still on the
lighter side.

Mexicans seem to pick up I'm one of them half the time, and the other half
don't believe me at all. White people see me as "Italian" or part "Asian"
most of the time...Its sort of a middle ground where neither side really
recognizes me as one of them entirely. It doesn't help my case to have been
raised more "white culture"(yes, I realize there are many. I mean the
version that non-Whites consider the universal in their own brand of racial
stereotyping), which means that I'm discounted even more as Non-Mexican.

Relating with groups is tough when neither side sees you as one of their
own.

On the language thing...I learned 2 years of high school Spanish. I
officially know more than my mother, whose parents used Spanish as their
code-switch/"Wall" language. All my aunts and uncles learned it at some
point except her, who never felt the need.

I can relate to Sophía the most, I think the perception in US society that is taught are Mexicans
are not part of the "white" race, I dont blame them alot most immigrants from Mexican are idigenous where about less 5% are white who emmigrate here. Also with us with blonde hair and blue eyed, when we say were Spanish? they hesitate, I guess they dont know España is in Europe. I had a teacher who thought Spanish came from the ididgenous people and not from Spain. I was very offened and "told him in a civilised manner" I dont face racism from whites but rather the true Mexicans. That's why I am slowly stopped calling myself Mexican. I do know that is sad, but Im just tired of all this racism and non equality here in the Us. At school we have "La Raza" and the Movimiento Mexicano who want all whites out of the Américas, we robbed them since 1492 according to them. What annoys them the most is how I use vosotros with them, I just do it to annoy them :) I recently spoke with my grandfather who is a Spaniard and just talked about the same subject here. I think we all seem to have been affected by some prejudice from the "indigenous latino population" I dont really like the term Latino and Hispanic since I was taught it was politically inccorrect for most people to use it. My grandfather told me "si la independencia de México no pasó hoy en día España fuera ser el país más poderoso e igual los mismos Mexicanos que se miran hoy en día no exsisterían. I think this might be true. If Spain had won, the world would be very different today. I only thank those racist mexican ones for my birth, if they hadnt burned our hacienda we wouldnt have emmigrated and I wouldnt have been born. I think God has his ways.

Such a healthy dialogue!

We have all had similar experiences, but also such different ones. My
mother and her family emigrated from Jalisco in the 1920's to Fresno,
California, and my mother was raised in a largely Mexican Catholic
community, attending a convent school and learning English as a foreign
language. She eventually married a Midwesterner. They proudly decided that
their children would celebrate both of their ethnic heritages, and my sister
Carmelita and I were raised speaking Spanish to our mother and English to
our father. I spent my summers with my Mexican grandparents, aunts and
uncles, who lived largely as they had in Tepatitlan. My mother and father
both encouraged us to take pride in our unique heritages. It worked, and my
sister and I are both proudly bilingual and bicultural.

In my middle-class Northern California neighborhood, high-school and
university, I was considered an oddity--a very "anglo"-looking
Mexican-American who spoke Spanish and English without an accent. Other
than the usual childhood taunts because of my speaking Spanish in a largely
"gringo" community, I never experienced overt prejudice until I applied to
medical school. When I filled out the application papers, I dutifully
checked the "Caucasian" and "Mexican" boxes. I was quickly contacted by the
scholarship department who encouraged me to take advantage of the
opportunities offered to the Mexican-American community at that time. At the
required interview for the scholarship, there was a young Mexican-American
activist on the panel, who was obviously angry that I called myself a
Mexican-American, had light skin and spoke English without an accent. She
made a big fuss when I couldn't name my favorite Mexican pop singer (I
played classical piano, and my mother was an opera singer, and we didn't
listen to pop music at home--either in English or Spanish). I was crushed
at the rejection. I had always been embraced by my Mexican-American family
and friends, and by the relatives "back home" in Jalisco.

The controversial Chicano author Richard Rodriguez was also on the
committee. After the interview he took me to his office and assured me that
I had passed with flying colors. I will compress and paraphrase what he
said: "You are exactly what we should be looking for--an American-born son
of a Mexican, raised bilingual and bicultural, and striving to benefit from
the opportunities accorded you and to become the first professional in three
generations of your family. You are exactly what I would hope for every
young Mexican American in California, and we should not be belittling your
looking to the future, rather than the past."

To be sure, it is not always easy to assimilate while preserving the
important elements of one's cultural heritage. On the other hand, it is
unlikely that the strong overtones of Mexican Catholicism and the uniquely
Mexican experiences of my childhood will ever be rooted out of my being. I
did graduate from medical school, and I just retired from a long and
fruitful career in pediatrics, where I was able to use my Spanish and my
unique cultural heritage to serve my Spanish-speaking families. I am and
will always be a "Mexican American."

Yes, Karr,

Your e-mail is a keeper. I printed it out for my husband, who is a white Alteno always taken for an Anglo. I look typically Mexican, but have been criticized also for pursuing interests not considered "Mexican" enough for some activists, and for speaking Spanish with an American accent. I find it sad that some don't want to expand their horizons, and instead limit themselves to a lesser economic and social existence.

Hello Karr, I enjoyed reading your story, I can relate to alot. I took a careful look at this "checking the white or mexican box on applications" now days it is easier by law everyone needs to check
one race, black, white or asiatic. Then one ethnic origin, (a lot of choices!) In school it is different under white (it says doesn't include hispanic or mexican or spanish). I was at once offended. How can you say hispanic isnt include in the white section, I asked my teacher than i must be black then, for a blondie. go figure. I still picked it though. Thank goodness this coming 2010 the census beureau are deciding to remove latino and hispanic and other. from the choices. I think these terms make it too complicated. Not sure why they seperate hispanics. My teacher explained that the office of education is crazy and should fill in what I was taught and that is what I did. I was told hispanics and latinos who call themselve white do better in school. I was outragef by this by calling my self part of the white race has nothing to do with education. Everyone has the decision to do good in school. THose who dont chose no to. Everyone whether your black, white, or asian can follow your dreams and do what you want to do in life. For example I enjoy politics, theatre and law. -Daniel Méndez del Camino

When I think of the former President Fox of Mexico, whose family is NOT
mixed with Indigenous and African blood, as was the case of his wife - it makes
me think that Mexico still honors and holds in high esteem their
"white"/European" heritage and look down upon those with obvious mixed heritage, and
further frowns upon those who are "indigenous"....of course, not in the common
rhetoric --but in blatant reality, opportunities, etc.

Further, the issue of perceived beauty continues to be the European look -
one simply has to look at the magazines, models, and former beauty queens of
Mexico (Priscila Perales).

Hence, our country of Mexico suffers from the inferiority status that was
given to them by our conquistadores - and the values persist of what is
perceived "status" and "beauty". Therefore, another movement (much like the Black
Power movement of the 60's and 70's in the United States) would naturally
surface to honor the brown skin of the vast majority of the people. These groups
may appear to be "anti" European, and perhaps they are....but their priority
was to instill the pride of all our inherited Mexican heritages - brown being
the most common of our coloring - yet the most discriminated against.

If "anti" sentiments exists because of the "whiteness" of appearance, it is
really the resentment that this "whiteness" will always be an "advantage" in
both Mexico and the United States. It is highly doubtful that any Mexican
person is NOT aware of our "Spanish/European" looking Mexican---it is all over
the news, the magazines, television, and continues to be the power base of
Mexico.

Personally, my own nuclear family "looks" range from "Indio" to "European" -
from small, slanted eyes with dark brown skin to bright green or blue eyes
and sandy brown hair. My siblings have always gotten that comment - "you
don't look Mexican" - but no one has discriminated against them because of their
looks. Conversely, those siblings who looked "Indio" were the victims of
discrimination - both in the United States and in Mexico.

All countries who were colonized by the Europeans, especially throughout
Latin America suffer from the same inferiority status that was imposed upon them
from long ago. As one Brazilian man once said:"If you have brown skin, or
look African/Indian, this is an indication that at one time you were in
servitude to the white man - and the white man will never let you forget it."

Hi Esperanza, I enjoyed reading your post, this is true, I learned in history class there are always the class system and castas even today. I admit our familiy, We did like Fox he was a conversador or conservative but even all of them their up and downs, just like George Bush, he has his good and bad days we are all human. I was taught ever since a child to be proud of my spanish descent because it is the most precious thing anyone has...their heritage. I do feel bad what my ancestors did to all people who were seem as "less". But I think it was the time era, people didnt know it was wrong they grew in that society always thinking white is better, can you imagine if it was the other way around, society would be different today. I think all groups not just the Mexica movement who hate white of course includes Mexicans, the Black power and the White Nationalist are a disgrace. Though we still have that Alteño prejudice, my grandfather doesn't like Barack Obama. I know that is very sad, he is an okay candidate, he wants to help the poor which I proudly admire. I really do not like the Mexica movement who has affected my life, at my school they seem as an ordinary group saying brown power, but they hate whites. So when I say Im Mexican they get mad, so I am use to saying yo soy español now so people wont say anything. Im sure their parents know about white mexicans but since this generation was born here the lack that knowledge. My hero personally is Carlos V who united all the Spain and created España. -Daniel

My two cents... como hemos dicho antes... no real "pure-breeds"... in our families you never know what you are going to get... morenitos, gueritos, peli-rojitos, etc

Understanding who they were; peninsulares and criollos

Saturday, August 30, 2008

Dear Researchers--

One of my favorite books is called History of Mexico by Inigo Fernandez, translated by David Castledine. The first edition was published in 2002 and my fifth reprint was done in 2006. In Chapter 2, The Conquest of Mexico and the Viceroyalty (1519-1808), pg 41-42, it states the following:

This is an interesting point Diane, Criollos were seen as lower though in the upper middle class still were seen inferior, it is interesting I have some instances where my ancestors would sometimes go back to Spain or Portugal just so they can be born to become a penínsular. Now days Criollos still make about 12% of México population. -Daniel

Hey Ronnie,

Not according to Jaime Holcome. He said in one of his letters:

"I had thought that the Padillas in Teocaltiche came from the Padilla
Dávilas aka Dávila Padillas aka de la Mota Padillas. Not so, although the
"founding father" also came from Jerez de la Frontera, their distant
relative. The Alderetes descend from him on a female line".

I don't know much about these families.

Thanks for answering. To my knowledge no one has done DNA testing. These ancestors were my paternal grandmother's. Anita

Who are the parents of Angela de Temiño y Velasco?

Hello Phyls,

I imagine that that the Angela your asking about is Angela de Velasco y Figueroa Termino de Beñuelos, who was married to Diego Flores de Torre (1540-1653) Guadalajara.
I have her parents as Francisco Figueroa y Carbajal and Ana Maria Bañuelos.

YAHUALICA, Jalisco, LISARDE and other misread names...

Sunday, August 24, 2008

Dear Ranchos Group--

I have two comments in regard to this listing by Daniel.

1. My husband and I had the opportunity a few years ago to visit Yahualica, Jalisco. It is a most beautiful place and unlike any other part in Mexico. If this is where your families lines go, try to plan a trip to see the land. It is absolutely incredible. At the time of our visit, we only had a camera for pictures. However the grandeur and scope of the place can only be appreciated first hand or as a poor second choice, through the offerings of a video camera. Additionally, this place was seen by Pope John Paul II and there is a statue near the church to commemorate his visit.

Hi All! I agree with Patricia, family history is fun the hours go by fast. Especially once you connect back to roaylty it is so cool! My favorite ancestor is Carlos V, the most powerful man ever lived (besides Jesus Christ of course)
HE owned all of Spain, the Americas, Nether lands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Italy, Corsica, Sicily, parts of France, Switerzland, parts of Poland. I eventually after college would like to visit All of Los Altos and know where a big chunck of my ancestors lived at one point in Spanish times. I would also like to visit all around Europe since my parents have "a lttle blood of everything" mostly England, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Italy, Germany and France. I plan to move to Spain eventually and meet all these cousins I hear bet havent met. COunt me in I will visit Yahualica! -Daniel :)

Just a common misread when the films were being indexed for the IGI, LISARDE was misread for
LISALDE, of whom are the original family of López de Elisalde. When searching still try to look up with Lisarde since most of them are under that because of a simple mistake. -Daniel

Hola Ronnie. No te culpo por estar confundido. It took me a while to
figure out all the connections. What you have is correct, except that
you're missing two earlier generations. Diego Flores de la Torre married to
Beatriz de Anda Altamirano y Castañeda was the third Encomendero de
Juchipila. His parents were his namesake Diego Flores de la Torre and Doña
Angela de Velasco. This Diego was the second Encomendero de Juchipila. His
father Hernán Flores, Conquistador de la Nueva Galicia, married to Doña
María Alvarez de la Torre, was the first Encomendero. This was his second
marriage. His first wife was Isabel de Alvarado, daughter of Gómez de
Alvarado and niece of the Adelantado de Guatemala Capt. Pedro de Alvarado.
As far as I know, there were no children from his first marriage.

Take care, primo.

Hola Ronnie and Bill,
I have all the Diego's as well. It is confusing! Hernan Flores' parents were Catalina Flores and Pedro De Fuentes. I have dozens of the Flores De L a Torre tree. Does anyone have Diego Flores De La Torre y Arias' ( 1629-?) descendants. I would like to compare names from this huge tree with you, Bill and Ronnie. I am sure it connects to my gg-gfather, Trinidad Flores, de Juchipila. He might have been born around the 1830's.
Gracias,
Charles Flores

Juana Flores de la Torre y Hermosillo
Su marido: Tomas Martin del Campo y Lopez de la Cruz (which is my line)

Hola Primo,

Estoy bien, gracias.

What I know about Lucia and Diego is that Diego was the son of Diego de Padilla Davila and Ana de la Mota y Vera.
Lucia was born about 1650 and she married Diego in 1668 Jalostotitlan, having one daughter, Ana de Padilla Davila y Flores de la Torre. She was born in 1670. She married Matias opez y Sanchez.
After Jalostotitlan, Lucia and a small Ana moved to Leon, Nueva España.Widow, Lucia married Miguel de Olaez Roldan, probably before 1683.

I'm sorry I made a mistake, Diego Flores de la Torre y Hermosillo married Juana Guerra Gallardo. Juana Maria Flores de la Torre y Guerra was there daughter, who was born in Lagos at the end of 1694. She was married to Santiago Fernandez de San Salvador.
more children:
Ines, born around 1696 married to Jose de San Roman Serrano y Landeros.
Diego Flores de la Torre y Guerra, baptized in 1698

Saludos,
Sofia

Hola Charles,

My guess is that your son's first name is also Diego...right? Flores de la
Torre is not my line although I have information on members that married my
relatives. For example, Hernán Flores de la Torre married Juana de Aguilar
y Salado 4 Oct 1654 at Parroquia de la Asunción in Aguascalientes. He was
the son of Hernán Flores de la Torre and Ana Alvarez de Sandi. His paternal
grandparents were Diego Flores de la Torre and Angela de Velasco. Have you
checked "Retoños de España en la Nueva Galicia" by Mariano González-Leal?
It includes lots of genealogy and family history for the Flores de la Torre
surname (pages 329-360). It begins as follows:

Hola Ronnie and Bill,
I have all the Diego's as well. It is confusing! Hernan Flores' parents
were Catalina Flores and Pedro De Fuentes. I have dozens of the Flores De L
a Torre tree. Does anyone have Diego Flores De La Torre y Arias' ( 1629-?)
descendants. I would like to compare names from this huge tree with you,
Bill and Ronnie. I am sure it connects to my gg-gfather, Trinidad Flores, de
Juchipila. He might have been born around the 1830's.
Gracias,
Charles Flores
BTW- guess what my only son's first name happens to be??
