1930 Mexican Census

In the Famly History Library Catalog, they have the 1930 Mexican census for
Guadalajara in several films numbered 1507525 thru 1507545. Each listing
reads: Censo 1930 (Leg.--) etc. Can anyone tell me what the Leg. stands

Corrine:

The Leg in those records stands for "legajo" which translates as "dossier" or "file number." It is very common for Mexican archives to catalogue their collection by collection number, box number and then file number. The census is kept at the Archivo General de la Nacion, where it was filmed by LDS so I presume that the numeration refers to the way the cansus tally sheets are catalogued at the Archive.

However, LDS has put all of the images of the 1930 Mexican census online and they can be accessed by State, Municipality and Locality (pueblo or rancho) at:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch

You will need to register for an account, but there does not appear to be any restrictions to registration.

You can then simply click on the "1930 Mexico Census" link and click on the relevant state and municipality.

Thank-you for the information regarding the 1930 Mexican census. I found
out where my mother's family was living in Guadalajara at the time, so I
will have a much easier time finding her baptism record now.

Fellow listers,

I have also found it to be incomplete, however it is a work in progress, and the most important thing is-

You can save and print the images in the quality of the original right at your computer at any time !

This is the pilot program of the LDS project to digitize their entire microfilm holdings. Even with todays
technology they estimsate it to be a 30 year project

Hey, does anybody know what happened to the 1930 Mexican census on the
family search labs pilot website? I went on there today to browse through
it and it isn't even on the list of collections anymore. Where did it go?
I usually click on it, then click on the state, city, and sector. Then,
once the census record images show up, I type in the page I left off at and
continue on. It has been a great way to find all sorts of people in the
census that I wouldn't find otherwise. Now, the whole thing is gone and
they only show baptisms and marriages, I think deaths, too, but that's it.
Did I miss something?

Thanks, Sofía. I did have Hernán Flores as the son of Pedro Fuentes and
Catalina Flores. He took the surname from his mother, which was common
practice in the 16th century. He was Alférez Mayor under Nuño de Guzmán and
later promoted to Captain. Also, for those interested, he was previously
married to Isabel de Alvarado, daughter of Gómez de Alvarado, conquistador
de la Nueva España and brother of Pedro de Alvarado, conquistador and first
Adelantado de Guatemala. They were married in 1548 and, as far as I know,
did not have any children.

Take care, Sofía.

Congratulations Rick!!!
It was a great event and you are a tremendous host. People from different places arrived to Valle de Guadalupe and you made us feel like home. Thank you very much for all your kindness.

Dr. Mariano Gonzalez said that his new child was born in El Valle (7 books of the new edition of "Retoños de España en la nueva Galicia") so Nuestros Ranchos had the privilege of this presentation.

Also, all the chronologists and writters that went to the meeting were very happy and we shared valuable information.
It is going to be hard to improve what you have done but hopefully this kind of events take place more often in other towns of the region.

Congratulations and thanks again

Do you have any Renteria families ending up in Jalpa, Zacatecas? The farthest I can go back is with my great grandfather Pedro Renteria born ~ 1859 married to Mariana Romero.

Irene,

You should definitely do it! I took a 15 year break from my investigations
into my ancestry and made a significant jump this past week. The conference in
Valle de Guadalupe was great, but I got so much more excitement actually doing
the investigative work. I went to the ranches I had never been to before and
was able to find them with the help of my grandparents and it was majestic.
It’s the rainy season there so it’s lush green. I was able to get pictures
of two more of my great grandparents on this trip and I was so surprised to
see their features in my aunts and uncles. Its very exciting and very much
worth the time. I'm ready to go back and continue! Time flies when you're
having fun. Anyway, hope this inspires you in some way.

Funny you mentioned they wouldn't lose their compiled last names over the
generations, my grandfather always told me for us Spaniards our last name is
our IDENTITY, it shows where we come from and who we belong to. He is a very
proud of his "blood".-Me too :) -Daniel

Hola Ruben,

I haven't found any Renteria in Jalpa in my line. My family is (primarily) Reynoso from Juchipila and Moyahua, Zac.

It is assumed that the Renteria name stayed for a few generations as a second surname connected to Reynoso, but it was dropped in my family sometime between 1900 and 1905. I'm still not very clear on how my particular line is related to Renteria, although a theory exists (you can find it on NuestrosRanchos if you search for Reynoso-Renteria)

If I come accross any Renterias in Jalpa, I will let you know.

Claudia..this Raul Luna...I have several Reynoso(reinnosos) in my family tree. Do you have any Lunas,Lamas, Rodriquez,Estradas? in your tree? Most of my family comes from Juchipila and its sourrounding areas, and Moyahua. Saludos, Raul

I'm still not very clear on how my particular line is related to Renteria, although a theory exists (you can find it on NuestrosRanchos if you search for Reynoso-Renteria)

If I come accross any Renterias in Jalpa, I will let you know.

Juan,
Thanks for your most inspiring message.  I am happy that you were able to go to Mexico and visit family and the land of your ancestors.  It means so much.  I know that the conference was well worth the trip, but what you were able to accomplish besides was great.  Now all I have to do is work on my husband.
Thanks again,
Irene

Great message Daniel, I feel the same.  I would love to travel to the land of
my ancestors and feel of their spirits.  I want to see the land where they
lived and I would like to find the living family.  I would like to find the
ranches that my grandfather owned.  I would like to find pictures of family
members long gone.  I have always wanted to see what they looked like.  I
just would like to know them better.

Bookstores in Mexico

Hi all. I am planning a trip to Mexico in the fall (leisure trip to Cabo San Lucas, B.C. Sur) and was wondering if anybody knows of a bookstore chain - or national bookseller - in Mexico that I can reasearch and perhaps order some geneaology books from.

Claudia:

I have never been to Cabo San Lucas, but from my other trips to resort cities in Mexico, I doubt you will be able to find a decent book store there.

Genealogy books are generally not printed or distributed by major publishing houses and therefore are not really carried by bookstore chains. Many of the best books on history, ethnography, etc. in Mexico are printed and distributed by Fondo de Cultura Economica, which does have bookstores throughout the country, but they also sell their books online:

http://www.libreriasdelfondo.com/LF_LibreriasFondo2.asp

Another great bookstore chain in Mexico is Librerias Gandhi, which also sells online and ships to the United States. They do have a store in Cabo San Lucas on Calle Morelos s/n, Colonia Centro.

I just went to Cabo San Lucas a couple of weeks ago. There is a mall style
commercial center on the marina, it is called Puerto El Paraiso, you might find
something there.

Hi Sofia and Maria,

Cemeteries are a rich and wonderful source of genealogical information. I
like to visit the "Cementerio General de Guatemala" every chance I get. It
was built in 1871 at the site of an older cemetery and it has record books
dating from the year it was built. My parents, grandparents and great
grandparents are buried there, plus hundreds of close relatives. The
cemetery is laid out like a small city, with broad avenues and streets lined
up with trees. You can go to the administration office and find out where
your relative is buried. They keep excellent records. You can drive your
automobile right next to the mausoleum and read the plaques on the outside
walls. There is a small archive (two rooms) where you can look up your
ancestor's burial place in neatly kept books. You can even photograph the
pages you would like to have or they can photocopy them for you. Of course,
Guatemala is a city of several million people. In the last few years
several modern cemeteries that look just like the ones in the USA have been
built.

My experience in Mexico has been different. I went to Tepic, Nayarit, in
2002 and 2003 to look for records of my ancestors. My great-grandmother
Josefa Frías Ruiz de Esparza, born in Rincon de Romos, Ags. in 1848 grew up
in Tepic and got married there in 1870. I found her marriage record at the
Cathedral in Tepic and at the Archivo Historico del Estado. The family
moved to Guatemala in the late 1870s or early 1880s.

Of course, one of the first places I wanted to visit in Tepic was the
cemetery where my great great grandfather Antonio Frias Jaso (Josefa's
father) and his son Antonio Frias Esparza (Josefa's brother) had been
buried. So my wife and I headed for the city's cemetery, Panteon Hidalgo.
We stopped at the office where an employee pulled out a card with
information about the burial of Antonio Frias Esparza, who died in 1908. It
had important information, such as the cause of death, age, names of the
parents, etc. The person in charge had no idea where the burial site was,
but said we could go inside and take a look.

The cemetery consists of one street that ends in a beautiful old chapel that
was being restored. No cars allowed inside. The burial sites are scattered
on both sides of that street without any other streets or walkways, so we
ended up reading plaques in hundreds of tombs without ever finding any
relatives. I was told by my cousins in Guadalajara that most old cemeteries
in Mexico are like that. On a recent trip to Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and
Altos de Jalisco I walked into the cemetery at Mexticacan, but could not
find anyone either. It was a tiny cemetery. I imagine other small towns in
Altos de Jalisco have similar cemeteries. Be prepared to spend a lot of
time looking around.

Claudia,

My mother used to speak of an adoption further back on our lines.  She said the surname used was Renteria but because the direct line ancestor was raised by the Reynoso family he took on their name out of gratitude, thankfulness and respect for this family.  This information was passed down.  I don't go along with this story.  As you check the ages of the Renteria and Reynoso men when they died they were older men.  As I looked at the children, they would have been teenagers.  I found one direct line that would have been around 14 years old at the time of death of his father.  When you stop and think about it, why are there so many in the family that can be found by both names?  I believe that Renteria was the surname of a great grandmother somewhere down the line and as you find so often that name was carried on.  With my own grandfather Francisco Reynoso, I have found him listed as Reynoso and Renteria on different documents.  I have found
that to be true on his father, grandfather and so on.  Someday I hope we will be able to solve the mystery.

I still keep searching for those records that go back to the 1600s.  I believe we will find our answers there.  Also since the Reynoso and the Renteria men were military there should be information that could help us on possibly enlistment records or other military records.  Possibly wills, probate records.  Marriage information records are also good if we can locate them further back in time.

My grandfather used to tell me that the records for the family could be found in Jalisco.

I have been able to piece the family records together from padrones, civil records, and of course catholic church records.  I have been able to extend my Serrano line by searching through land records.  They are in script, a great deal of abbreviations amd are hard to read.  One can usually pick out the information needed or have someone help you that knows the language better and can understand the old writing.

Sorry I could not be more help Claudia.

Can you help me decipher the Reynoso-Renteria name swap?  I am still struggling with this.  A few Reynosos are recorded are Renterias in official records.

What do you know?

I can help with this, I have worked extensively on the families and currently doing so for Los Altos, The two Reynoso brothers married the Rentería sisters, this event is by far the most important for the Reynosos in Los Altos. I see it as a door way into marrying other prominant Spaniard families. The marriage caused them I suppose to compound their surnames to
de Reynoso y Rentería; this is the entire last name not Reynoso or Rentería but de Reynoso y Rentería, I find it custom for Spaniards to interchange or switch their last names when they please. I myself have done this a couple of times. I usually say "soy Daniel del Camino or even Daniel Camino when Im lazy. If I say Daniel Méndez, my mother's family will not know who I am, since Camino rings a bell. This is just my example why someone do this. We can say sometimes the average José de Reynoso y Rentería sometimes reffered to himself as José de Reynoso but
everyone else or his cousins referred to him as José de Rentería. Hope this clears up some
confusion! -Daniel Camino

Thank you Daniel, your explanation makes comeplete sense. I guess this is why other predominant families (i.e. Padilla Davila, Temino Velasco, etc.) didn't lose the compiled surnames over several generations.

I feel the Reynoso-Renteria clan was a bit looser though, and not always stuck to both at all times. In my opinion, this explains why so many of my extended family are registered as both (on separate documents), but they are the same individual!

AHA!-moment!

Quezada, enigma to me

What is worth to navigate?
About two days ago I got curious about Daniel Mendez family tree and thought maybe he has it in rootsweb site, I tried some surnames and voila! found out we descend from Juan De Leon and María De Escapa, difference is his Juan has "Quezada" surname and the Coss Y Leon, mine is only De Leon, we already communicate about this.

3er Tomo

Bill Figueroa and Daniel:

I am presently in Teocaltiche, waiting for the conference which will be taking place this coming Saturday. Dr. Mariano Gonzalez Leal has not arrived yet and is not expected until then. I am sorry I don´t have any information to report yet. I should be back home in California by the 9th of August.

For those members of the group that will be going to the meeting in
Valle de Guadalupe this weekend a new member of the group Carlos

Petra Guadalupe De Leon Aguirre

There is more info about her ancestors in my gedcom in this site.
I also am expecting for Lic Mariano Gonzalez-Leal next edition of Retonos...to know more about this line that took the apellido compuesto Cos Y Leon or Coss Y Leon, nowdays this decendancy in U. S. A. turn it into Cossyleon.

Hi, Daniel. I don't know when the 3rd. vol. will be published. I hope
someone attending the Valle de Guadalupe Conference will have an answer.
Mariano Gonzalez Leal is suppose to attend it. Unfortunately, Mr. Gonzalez
has not been very forthcoming with the information. - Bill

Gomez Hurtado de Mendoza or Gomez de Portugal

Hello Sandra,
My family comes from Jalostotitlan, and I'm curious if your
Gomez are Gomez Hurtado de Mendoza or Gomez de Portugal. I've been
researching my paternal Gomez line, and it is Gomez Hurtado de Mendoza.

Hola Irma!
First of all, thanks for your response!  Our Ranchos primos have been really quiet with me lately :-)
Well, I really don't know.  My finds have been amazing though because my grandfather was born out of wedlock, my dad didn't know anything about his family.  I started putting the pieces together with the help of the 1930 census we recently got access to.
This is the thread:
Grandfather: Pedro Gomez, born in Juchipila, Zacatecas out of wedlock in 1893.
Great grandfather: Juan Gomez, born in Moyahua, Zacatecas in 1866... married to Angela Benavides (real wife).
GG grandfather: Toribio Gomez, born in Yahualica, married to Regina de Luna in Ystlahuacan del Rio, Jalisco.
GGG grandfather: Juan Gomez, married to Maria de Jesus Carrillo in Jalos.
GGGG grandfather: Francisco Gomez, married to Ana Quiteria de Agredano.

I'm not sure which rancho or anything!

Saludos!!

If it's the same, then maybe we can compare lines and see where your
Francisco Gomez might tie in.  Also do you have a Rancho for your Gomez?
This might help with the mystery...
