Welcome, Danny!
You are so fortunate to start your interest at such a young age! I envy you.
Some advice that I wish was given to me:
This is a fantastic way to learn Spanish so don't just scan records for the information you want. Read the whole thing. You will find interesting tidbits of information in the "meat" of some documents.
Translate the whole record. What is not important now, may be a clue later. This includes noting padrinos (godparents), ranches, etc. Back then padrinos were mostly family. My personal experience is that I kept finding records for the family of Santiago Mora but he was not connected to my family. He was, however, frequently a padrino to my documented family. I made a separate tree for Santiago and his family and later found the common ancestor. As soon as I found this, I added 4 generations of Moras to my tree.
Note your sources!!!!!!!! Years later and I am still adding sources because I was so anxious in the beginning that I skipped this step.REGRET! Now it takes so long to retrace steps as I gain experience of how to research.Noting sources saved me when a new found relative questioned my information. Mine was sourced, she still didn't believe it but she was able to look at my sources and found she had been doing years of research in the wrong region. Not uncommon which is why you should use index information as the first step before looking at the actual record.
If you are using Family Search for films, note actual page numbers of the book as well as image numbers. If you have to go back or want to share information, it is so much easier.
Talk to the older generation now! Names and dates are fantastic but my personal favorites are what can't be found in documents: favorite holidays and how they were celebrated, favorite foods and recipes, how did people meet, occupation, describe a typical day in their childhood, who were the ancestors that migrated and why, etc
Good luck, Danny!

Thank you for your advice Sherri, It's very good advice. I'm sorry I didn't
respond I didn't see it, I didn't know the subject had to match or it would
make a new thread. I'll make sure to follow your advice and take notes and
keep sources and when I can read the records better I'll start translating.
I'll also start talking to my family members right away.

Even though it looks like "de fuente" it says "defunto" which in those days was spelled different ways. Meaning it says difunto with current spelling rules.

What does C. M. mean?

I have recently come across some baptismal records that have the infant's
names, followed by the initials C. M. Can anyone tell me what the C. M.
stands for?

Ciudadano means "citizen", but in Mexico, what was a "mexicano"? I guess it meant a mestizo? Otherwise he would be "indio" and not "espanol"?. I'm confused.

Dear Emilie,

As Mario says above, after Mexico became and independent country (first as an Empire and then as a Republic) the castes were abolished. Indeed equality between castes was one of the causes for the war of independence. Thereafter all people born on Mexican soil were officially "Mexicano" and no longer members of a caste.

I have done most of my research in Autlán, and have found that the priest started using the term "ciudadano" (citizen) pretty early, as early as April 1821, which was five months before the formal end of the war of Independence in September 1821. Using the term citizen is inherently equalizing.

Hope this helps!

Wikipedia says

The Plan of Iguala, also known as The Plan of the Three Guarantees ("Plan Trigarante"), was a revolutionary proclamation promulgated on 24 February 1821, in the final stage of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain. The Plan stated that Mexico was to become a constitutional monarchy, whose sole official religion would be Roman Catholicism, in which all inhabitants of Mexico would enjoy equal political and social rights.[2] It took its name from the city of Iguala in the modern-day state of Guerrero.

The Plan of Iguala established three central principles for the nascent Mexican state: the primacy of Roman Catholicism, the absolute political independence of Mexico, and full social equality for all social and ethnic groups in the new country. These are the "Three Guarantees" by which the Plan is sometimes known, summarized as "Religion, Independence and Unity" ("Religión, Independencia y Unión").

The document explicitly includes all residents of Mexico's geographic territory among its citizens: the preamble refers to "Americans, under which term are included not only those born in America, but Europeans, Africans and Asians who reside in it," and Article 12 states: "All the inhabitants of the Mexican Empire, without any other distinction besides merit and virtue, are suitable citizens to apply for any employment," or "All the inhabitants of New Spain, without any distinction between Europeans, Africans, nor Indians, are citizens of this Monarchy with option to all employment depending on their merit and virtues," depending on the copy.

You can find some of the catalogs at FamilySearch: log onto the page, select "books," and type in "catalogo de pasajeros. A list should come up; for most of them, you need "additonal permission" or something like that, but I was able to download 3 of them in PDF.

My ancestors were also from Zapotlan el Grande (Ciudad Guzman).
My Great Grandfather x7, Antonio Rodriguez married Theresa Ramires July 06, 1706, Zapotlan El Grande. They had a son by the name of Thomas who decided to carry on his mothers surname "Ramires". Thomas is also identified as "hijo legitimo" de Antonio Rodriguez.

Not sure if carrying on your mothers surname was custom throughout Mexico but in some areas it was. I also have read that if a couple had many children it was expected for at least one of them to carry on the mothers surname. We will let the experts comment and educate us on that.

I just wanted to also add that I am a participant in the Family Tree DNA project and have my results to share with anyone. My YDNA is I-M223 I2a2a (I believe its the same as I2b1). Wish more people from Southern Jalisco would participate in the DNA project.

I am a native of Southern California and very familiar with the San Fernando Valley. I got married in Encino, CA. I have read about the Sepulveda, Bandini, De La Guerra y Noriega, Pico and other surnames (families) that lived and owned land in S. California.

I will follow your story

Comentario

That's interesting information. I'm willing to help with the DNA results. However, there is a limitation on what can be determined based on the type and level of testing and how well documented the trees of the matches are and how much Y-DNA SNP testing the matches have done. The Y-DNA STR test should be at least 37 markers, but 67 markers are much better, to find matches. If there are no matches then the results will be limited to providing information on the haplogroup which would likely need additional SNP testing for anything conclusive for a region and time period for when the SNP first appeared based on ancient remains and/or calculated estimates.

Any autosomal testing would be limited to ethnicity results since that too long ago to prove a connection to any families in Jalisco.

Information from mtDNA results depend on the level of testing, haplogroup, matches, and trees of the matches. If it isn't Full Sequence testing it will be harder to find matches of significance. If the haplogroup is common in a lot of people of the same ethnicity of the maternal line then it will also be hard to provide any information other than a large geographical region where the haplogroup is most common.

Has anyone researched San Martin de Bolaños, Jalisco? The church records only go back to 1905. Were earlier records lost or destroyed? If not, what nearby parish was being used?

There was never an agreement though. The marrying of españoles with other españoles was due to being able to maintain a higher status in society by marrying other people considered to be españoles. Since marrying into a lower class would cause them to be reduced in class they tried to avoid that. This happened all over Mexico and not just in Los Altos. When peninsulares with daughters moved to the region that allowed the Alteños to marry them maintain a higher ratio of Spanish ancestry. There would be no need to have an agreement to do something that the rest of society in Latin America expected a person to do.

i'm not sure what some of the terms are in this doucment

Normally I have read and heard about indiano being used for a person born in Spain that has gone to the Indies (America) and made a lot of money and gone back to Spain to live the rest of his life. However, that's the 4th definition in the dictionary of the Real Academia Española http://lema.rae.es/drae/?val=indiano

It's the first definition that seems to be what is used. Saying that he was born in America but his origins (ancestry) is from Spain.

I'm basing that on that fact that it says he was "natural de la ciudad de Guayaquil en la America Meridional y vago ya por varios puntos de esta septentrional..." which literally means he was "born in Guayaquil in South America and he traveled through various points of this North [America]" and because on the left indent it says español indiano which would mean his ancestry is considered Spanish.

Meridional means south and septentrional means north.

Here in nuestrosranchos there has been some duscussion about the origin of the use of the lastname Salado among the Ruíz de Esparza family and so far I can tell you that no relationship can be established between the Salgados you mention whose "linaje" is shown in the book that you mention : "Nobiliario, Armas y Triunfos de Galicia....", and the "Salados" that appear in Nueva Galicia related to the Ruíz de Esparza and the Fernández de Vaulus y Siordia families.

What seems to be unquestioned is that the first documented "Salado" in Nueva Galicia is Juanes de Salado who married around 1585 Petrona Gutiérrez and these couple were the parents of Bernardo Salado born around 1585, Jerónima de Salado born around 1587 and Diego Salado baptized on may 2, 1593 in Mexico City.

Bernardo Salado married around 1605 Juana Fernández de Vaulus y Siordia Navarro de Gabay, daughter of Pedro Fernández de Vaulus and María Navarro de Gabay.

This Juana Fernández de Vaulus y Navarro was cousin of the children of Lope Ruíz de Esparza, misteriously some of the children of Lope Ruíz de Esparza are also called "Salados" as is the case of María Salado Ruíz de Esparza born around 1613 who married Nicolás de Ulloa around 1635; Bernardo Ruíz de Esparza Salado who married Catalina Lozano on feb-28th-1634.

The descendants of Juana Fernández de Vaulus and Bernardo Salado could use righteously the lastname Salado, but why would the children of Lope ?

Some time ago I read a book written by Victoriano Salado Álvarez and he says that he is a descendant of Juanes de Salado but he canot mention the whole link between he and that Juanes, nevertheless he mentions on "proceso de Inquisición" that was held against this family of Salados , the process was iniciated in 1675 by one servant of Bernarda Salado de Siordia who was a widow with five living children :Juana, Constanza, Bernardo, María y Catlina.

Juana and Constanza were already married by that time and Bernardo who was around 40 years old was not married.

The servant that accused these Salados was a mulata who declared tha se witnessed some rituals performed by the family that were against the Catholic religion.

I remember that a special prosecutor was comissioned to invetigate the matter and he found that this family was well respected in the area and that Doña Bernarda Salado de Siordia was reputed as part of the renowned family of the "Esparzas"; that her daughter Juana was married to the encomendero Hernán Flores de la Torre, and Constanza married to a wealthy "arriero" called Francisco Ponce; the case was finally DISMISSED.

The mystery about the lastname Salado remains till we find some more data.

I forgot telling you that the name of the father of Diego Arias de Sotelo has been already mentioned here in nuestrosranchos several times and was not Antonio Sotelo Salgado but Antonio de Sotelo y Cisneros son of Pedro de Sotelo and Beatríz de Cisneros.
Pedro de Sotelo was the son of Lope de Sotelo who died in 1447 and founded in his will a chapel in the church of San Andrés in Zamora.

Carlos, thank you for setting the record straight. I could not find the posts you were talking about. Also, I did not want to follow the wrong lineage family. This is why I mentioned I was not 100% sure so I could get feedback on the right information. Thanks again for clearing this up. Now I can correct my family tree.

Thanks Bill for your words, well both of my Esparza lines are currently Francisco Esparsa (estimated birth 1828) and my other line is Matiana Esparsa (Est. birth 1832). My grandfather actually believes these two people are first cousins since all of our "families" would intermarry within our family and I too believe this.

Maria de la Luz AVILA Calvillo had one sibling that I know of:

Luis Serapio AVILA Calvillo #299471
baptized 3 Sep 1838, El Sagrario, Aguascalientes, Ags
hijo legitimo de Don Joaquin AVILA y doña Feliciana CALVILLO
Abuelos paternos: Don Antonio de AVILA y doña Ynes DIAS de TISCARENO
Abuelos maternos: Don Rodrigo CALVILLO y doña Ana LOPEZ PORTILLO
Madrina: Doña Mariana CALVILLO
p 215 (I don't have a batch number, these are from my notes years ago when I read the film)

Don Joaquin AVILA had a sister:
Maria Gertrudis AVILA Dias-Tiscareno, c. 1775
A submission to the IGI gives her husband as:
Joseph Sotero CALBILLO Ximenes
hijo de Vicente CALVILLO y Maria Jeronima XIMENEZ Albarado
I have not checked this out.

A Sotero CALVILLO was the testigo to the marriage of:
Jose Maria MACIAS Calvillo to Anna Maria DIAS Medina, Jun 1791

Joseph Sotero CALBILLO and Maria Gertrudis AVILA were married in 1803, according to a submission to IGI.
They had at least 5 children that I know of, the first child I would recheck:

Joseph Eduardo, bap 15 Oct 1792, El Sagrario, Ags, Ags [from IGI]
Juan Jose Nepomuceno, born 2 Jan, bap 5 Jan 1802 - #299457
Jose Lorenzo Cesilio, born 01 Feb, bap 3 Feb 1803 - #299457
Padrinos: Don Jose Maria AVILA y doña M. Josefa AVILA
Maria del Rosario, about 1805
Jose Ygnacio, born 11 Jul, bap 15 Jul 1808 - #299457

About Matiana ESPARSA - I've got at least 5 of them in my database, all from the same area and time frame. Matiana was a very popular name back then.

Daniel,

I found a Matiana Esparza that married Pablo Villalobos in Calvillo on 3 June 1865. Check Batch No. M604355 Source Call No. 0635888 Marriages 1854-1874 San Jose Calvillo Aguascalientes. This is the only Matiana Esparza I found in Calvillo in the mid-1800s. I have experienced many times that when last names are abbreviated or not clearly written in the manuscripts, they are sometimes incorrectly transcribed, so "Pablo Villalobos" may have been your "Pablo Vazquez". Also, there could be an error in the church records. Fortunately, this marriage is in the same microfilm that has the record of Francisco Esparza and Maria de la Luz Avila's marriage, so you can check them both at the same time.

Daniel,

Both Francisco and Matiana Esparza were common names among the families of Aguascalientes and neighboring states. However, you already know that Francisco married María de la Luz Avila and Matiana married Pablo Vazquez, and that they moved to Huanusco in the mid-1800s. I have not looked for any ancestors in Huanusco, but if I had to, I would probably start by checking catholic church records for the period when my ancestors lived there. Who knows, maybe they were married, baptized their children or were buried in the area. You can order Registros parroquiales, 1747-1925 for the "Iglesia Católica. Santa María Mecatabasco (Villa del Refugio, Zacatecas)" through your local FHC. FamilySearch also lists "Registros parroquiales, 1914-1920 Iglesia Católica (Huanusco, Zacatecas)". The more recent ones would probably not be much help to you. A word of caution: start from WHAT YOU KNOW and try to work your way back to previous generations, not the other way around. There have been literaly hundreds of Franciscos and Matianas Esparza throughout the centuries. Where did you find the information you have about Francisco and Matiana?

The descendants of Lope Ruiz de Esparza are well documented up to a certain point, as Bill mentioned. The records in Aguascalientes are pretty decent as well so if you could provide us with some more details about Francisco Esparza and Matiana Esparza (i.e. whom did they marry and approximately what year?) we can probably trace them back to one of the documented branches of the Ruiz de Esparza family.

Is this the same Matiana per chance? If so, you can order the film and find out who her parents were. There are too many Franciscos for me to list but as I said if you can help us with his spouse's name we may be able to track him down too.

Arturo,

I've been wondering about this surname Ruiz de Esparza. There are so many Ruiz and so many Esparza in Aguascalientes, but few have kept the whole name Ruiz de Esparza to the present. Did some drop the Ruiz and kept Esparza or was Esparza a separate line? I have traced one of my husband's lines to a Hacienda de Santiago and Hacienda de Morcenique as far back as his gggggg grandparents Maria Cecilia de Esparza who married a Francisco Duron, son of Felis Antonio Duron and Michaela de Avalos Villasenor, in Aguascalientes (Ciudad) on 4 OCT 1745. They lived in Hacienda de Santiago at the time. Their children were born in Morcenique. Francisco Duron was from "Asientos". Maria Cecilia's parents were listed as Miguel de Esparsa and Efigenia de Cordoba. They must have been born around the late 1600s. Could this Miguel de Esparza be traced back to one of the documented branches of the Ruiz de Esparza?

Thanks,

Composed surnames were quite common in the early centuries of Mexican colonial history... I know in my area there were the Carlos de Godoy, the Valdes y Llanos, the Ortiz de San Pedro, Lopes de Talamantes, etc. Over time people began shortening the names so some ended up simply Carlos, others Godoy, others Valdes, etc.

I read somewhere that at the time of independence there was a lot of Hispanophobia in Mexico and many gachupines were expelled or killed. Many of the families with composed names like these dropped part of their name at the time because they felt it linked them to strongly to Spain and kept more simple "Mexican" sounding names.

I don't know how true this is since I have seen the name dropping occurring way before independece. Maybe the priests just didn't want to waste ink! :)

I would say there is a decent chance that the Esparza you are writing about might be a descendant of Lope Ruiz de Esparza. It is also important to note that indigenous people and africans had the habit of taking the surnames of their masters or encomenderos, etc. so some of the very common names are due to the original Spanish ancestor having been ery wealthy and having many people name themselves after him.

I also know that around Jerez a lot of the local indigenous people took the name Caldera (including a couple of Guachichil chiefs) in honor of Miguel Caldera because they revered him so much for ringing peace to the region and because he himself was a Guachichil mestizo serving in the Spanish army which they must have been somewhat proud of in a twisted kind of way.

Comentario

Arturo, has Miguel Caldera's mother ever been named? I've never seen anything except his fathers name. Is it known where Miguel Caldera was born? I have 3 Caldera grandmothers in my direct lines. Any idea why the Caldera's, including my lines all claimed Espanol when they were Mestizo's from very early on. When I was in El Durazno, district of Jerez it seemed half the town was Caldera, green eyes, blue eyes, freckled and also very dark skinned with brown eyes.

Emilie,

As you probably know, Lope Ruiz de Esparza was the owner of the Hda. de Morcenique following the foundation of the city of Aguascalientes in 1575. Lope arrived in Mexico in 1593 from Pamplona, Navarra. The Hda. de Santiago was owned by Gerónimo de Orosco. The fact that Francisco Durón and María Cecilia de Esparza had their children in Morcenique is a pretty good indicative that María Cecilia was a direct descendant of Lope Ruiz de Esparza.

The compounded surname was brought to Mexico by Lope Ruiz de Esparza, one of the early settlers of Aguascalientes. It was common practice in those days to drop the first part of a compounded name to shorten it, i.e. many early records refer to those with the compound surname Ruiz de Esparza simply as "Esparza". Not even Lope's children were spared from this practice. For example, the baptismal record of Pedro Fernández de Vaulus in 1634 reads "fueron padrinos Salvador de Esparsa and María de Vielma". Salvador Ruiz de Esparza, born in Aguascalientes in 1595, was the oldest son of Lope Ruiz de Esparza. That was more than 200 years before the independence of Mexico.

I have not come across the marriage record for Miguel de Esparza and Efigenia de Cordova, but if you have that information let me know. I can probably take you back a couple of generations before Lope crossed the Atlantic from Navarra. Below is some information quoted from the book "NOCHISTLAN, ZACATECAS, Su Parroquia, Los Durán y otras familias antiguas. Estudio Historico-Genealógico" written by Ing. Jesús Durán Rodríguez. [HB, 349 pp, 1991 Monterrey, NL Mexico, No ISBN number] The prologue by Mariano González Leal, pp xv reads as follows:

Bill,

Thanks for your response and information on the Esparza name. No, I don't have any information any farther back than the marriage record of Francisco Duron and Maria Cecilia de Esparza that gives her parents' names as Miguel de Esparza and Efigenia de Cordova. That is a brick wall for me. I was hoping that perhaps you or Arturo could trace Miguel back farther. Also, as Arturo stated, perhaps Miguel was an indigenous person who only took the name of Esparza, even though the marriage record for Cecilia and Francisco lists them as espanoles. Some of their children are listed as mestizos, so that makes me wonder. So, by what is said in the Nochistlan book, the Esparzas got their name from the place they lived in in Spain, the "palacio de Esparza"? I wonder if Efigenia's ancestors were from Cordova in Spain.

So many of us have this same Ruiz de Esparza line; has anyone done research
as to the "Vielma" family(s) from this early time frame? I have wondered if
references to "Biedma", "Viezma",
"Bedmar" etc. are the same or misspellings/mis-transcriptions of this name
or totally different families.

However, this family was not as well chronicled as the other branches of the family. Several researchers, including Guillermo Tovar de Teresa and Mariano Gonzalez-Leal, have put together a fair amount of information on this lineage, although the paper trail for this branch is not perfect as it is for some of the other descendants of Moctezuma.
CONT '''GENERATION 2: MARIANA LEONOR MOCTEZUMA (1505-1562)'''
CONT MARIANA LEONOR MOCTEZUMA was one of the daughters of Moctezuma II. It is believed that she was Moctezuma's daughter by a noble Mixtec woman of Acatlan, a town and province that was in alliance with Tenochtitlán at the time of the Spanish invasion. Leonor was Christianized by Hernán Cortés and was then endowed with the encomienda of Ecatepec. The fact that Moctezuma was the father of '''Leonor''' ('''alias Marina''') and father-in-law of X'poval [Christoval] de Valderrama was confirmed by a '''1574 family tree chart that is available in Mexico's Archivo General (Mexico Archivo General - AGI - MP - Escudos: 211)'''.
CONT According to the author Donald E. Chipman (''Moctezuma's Children: Aztec Royalty Under Spanish Rule'', 1520-1700, pp. 70-71), '''Marianna''' was married in '''1527''' to '''Juan Páez''', a conquistador who died by late '''August 1529'''. Two years later in '''1531''', Mariana married her second husband, '''Cristobal de Valderrama'''. Don Cristobal, a native of Burgos, España, was a conquistador who served in Michoacán, Colima and Zacatula. The History of Tarímbaro (Michoacán) states that Cristobal de Valderrama was given the encomienda of Tarímbaro (1526-1537) and of Ecatepec, and he is mentioned in the text of Michoacán's early history during the 1530s until his death in '''November 1537'''. Mariana and Don Cristobal had only one daughter, Leonor de Valderrama y Moctezuma, who was baptized sometime around '''1532'''. Chipman discusses this family on pages 76 through 77 of his book.

NOTE
CONT '''GENERATION 3: LEONOR DE VALDERRAMA''' (born 1532 – died 1562)
CONT '''LEONOR DE VALDERRAMA Y MOCTEZUMA''', the second encomendera of Tarímbaro and Ecatepec, was probably born around 1532 and is believed to have died in 1562 when she was only 30 years old. Leonor de Valderrama y de Moctezuma was married to DIEGO ARIAS DE SOTELO, a native of Zamora, España, who was born around 1525.
CONT Diego Arias de Sotelo came to Nueva España in 1550 as a waiter of Viceroy Luis de Velasco and eventually served as Alcalde Ordinario de Méjico in 1561. A document dated June 30, 1559 confirms Diego Arias de Sotelo as "Regidor" in Mexico, referring to his parents as Capitan Antonio Sotelo and Vzenda Nunez. Diego and Leonor were involved in lengthy law-suits which consumed the rest of their lives and which, according to the author Donald E. Chipman, involvedthe disputed properties in Ecatepec and Tlatelolco.
CONT During the late 1560s, Diego Arias Sotelo got into trouble with the Vice Royalty, along with his brother, who was executed for his alleged crimes against the state. Diego Arias Sotelo was exiled to Spain in 1568 for his participation in the plot of Don Martin Cortes, but his son Fernando stepped in to take over the encomienda of Ecatepec from him. It is believed that Leonor died in 1562. Her husband, Diego Arias de Sotelo died four years later on July 7, 1566.
CONT '''Leonor Valderrama and her husband Diego Arias de Sotelo had the following children''':
CONT # '''Don Fernando de Sotelo''', the third encomendero of Tarímbaro and San Cristobal Ecatepec. He later became the Mayor of Colima and died sometime after 1604.
CONT # '''Don Cristobal de Sotelo Valderrama''' was married Juana de Heredia Patino in 1594 in Mexico City and is believed to have died in 1607.
CONT # '''Dona Ana de Sotelo Moctezuma''', baptized Sept. 7, 1553 in Asuncion Parish, Mexico City. She became a nun.
CONT # ''' Petronila Moctezuma''' (Montezuma). She was married to Martin de Gabay, also known as Martin Navarro.
CONT In addition to locating the baptism of Ana in 1553, we discovered a 1594 marriage document from the Archdiocese of Mexico City which provides the following information: "X'poval [Christobal] Sotelo Valderrama natural de esta ciudad hijo legitimo de Diego Arias Sotelo y Don Leonor ---- [unreadable] - difuntos [deceased]." Christoval was the brother of Petronila Sotelo alias Petronila Moctezuma, who represents the next generation of this family.

CONT '''GENERATION 4: PETRONILLA MOCTEZUMA''' (born 1552)
CONT PETRONILA SOTELO MOCTEZUMA was probably '''born around 1552 in Mexico City'''. It is '''believed that in 1571 she was married to MARTIN GABAI DE NAVARRO''', also known as MARTIN NABARRO. A marriage of Petronila and Martin has not been located yet, however, they were referenced several times as an ancestral married couple "Martin Nabarro" and "Petronila Montesuma" in a 1703 Diocese of Guadalajara informacion matrimonio document for a marriage that took place in Nochistlán. The known children of Petronila Sotelo (alias Moctezuma) and of Martin Gabai de Navarro are shown below:
CONT * Maria Gabay, who married to Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus. Maria Gabay (Gabai) is also mentioned in the 1703 marriage document.
CONT * Ana-Francisca Gabay, born circa 1573-1577, married circa 1594-95 to Lope Ruiz de Esparza, died March 30, 1652, Villa de Aguascalientes - married LOPE RUIZ-DE-ESPARZA. He died 14 Aug 1651 in Aguascalientes.
CONT Many of the descendants of this family as discussed in detail in "Genealogía de Nochistlán Antiguo Reino de la Nueva Galicia en el Siglo XVII Según Sus Archivos Parroquiales" by José Luis Vásquez y Rodríguez de Frías (2001).

Hi Andres

Above i read the following:

"Diego Arias de Sotelo died four years later on July 7, 1566."

That is not correct. If you do a search for Christobal de valderrama Sotelo in PARES with the dates 1582 to 1583, you get a hit for a file that includes a letter from Diego Arias Sotelo (signed by him) dated febr 1582 to his son Christobal. This info is already here in the forum somewhere but i could not find it.

I found a document Monday which shows he died before 1584. More about that later in a separate post...

espero noticias

Has confundido unas cosas.

Armando

Hello Denise, hello all !

The puzzle we have with the descendants of Moctezuma gets a little bit bigger, what I mean is that re-reading the Book "Partidos y Padrones del Obispado de Michoacan 1680-1685" mentions several Moctezumas living in Michoacán during those days and they appear with the title of "Dons", which means that they -while mestizos- were considered very important people.

It is interesting that those "Moctezumas" lived around the town of Ario which is located in the southern part of the state. It must be considered that the central and northern part of the state were the lands appartaining to the Tarascos Kings and that the last heiress of the Tarasco Kings had big properties near Valladolid as well as Don Fernando Sotelo de Moctezuma: the two were nearly the propietors of the whole valley of Tarímbaro.

The southern part of Michoacán was not Tarascan land because somehow some nahuatl people managed to remain independent from the Tarascos and I´m guessing that these people were "vasallos" of the Aztecs.

Anyway, Ario is a remarkably good reagion with great weather and lands where some large and prosperous Haciendas emerged later.

In page 119 we find : "Casa del corregidor Don Francisco de Montesuma, su mujer Doña....Don Pedro Montesuma, soltero..."

In page 121 of the mentioned book we find : "Padrón de la gente ladina .....año de 1685.....La familia de Tunaquaro de Don Francisco de Montezuma.....Don Francisco de Vilches Montesuma, Doña Josepha Altamirano su esposa; Don Pedro de Vilches Montesuma, corregidor".

I hope this information opens a new line of research that could lead to a better picture of the descendants of Moctezuma.

Best regards

Carlos

Comentario

Información matrimonial y actas diversas 1660- 1669 (incluye padrones)

I've spent a fair amount of time looking for this connection, but have never been able to find anything documented.

The Codex Chimalpahin has some tantalizing information which I previously posted:

Leonore de Moctezuma's section named her husband Cristobal de Valderrama, their daughter Leonore, and her (the daughter Lenore) marriage with Diego Sotelo. Their children (Ana and Hernando Sotelo de Moctezuma) are called quadroons. Hernando [or Fernando from other records] it says had several children: five that are commonly seen in the published genealogies, and five more who are unnamed!! This is most interesting.

The section on Valderrama de Moctezuma / Sotelo de Moctezuma repeats this information, with some additions: It says the five children (still names unknown) are living with their father in Michhuacan. [Is "Michhuacan" Michoacan?] It says that these five children are all Spaniards because their mother was a Spaniard and their father was a quadroon. This was written in 1619.

The full post is at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/19171

University libraries should have the books (it's two volumes); the set is available from the University of Oklahoma Press, and other booksellers.

See also http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/21989 which sheds more light on the Arias de Sotelo family, but the link we are looking for is still not found.

Chipman's work, Moctezuma's Children, is very useful, but makes no mention whatsoever of Petronila, nor does he have quite the same information concerning the children of Arias de Sotelo (he has the usual five, but not the others noted by Chimalpahin).

There have been references here at NR to work that is said to establish the connection, but no documents have been publically identified that I'm aware of.

Mariana, not Marina
Mariana stopped using Mariana when she was confirmed as Leonor
It is important to not mix up Marina and Mariana
Even though martins descendants mainly used Navarro and most genealogists list him as You do as Martin Navarro de Gabay, I have changed how I list him in my records to Martin Gabai de Navarro, "El de Navarro"

The following document from before 1574 clearly states "doña Leonor alias doña Marina casada con Xpoval de Valderrama"

http://pares.mcu.es/ParesBusquedas/servlets/Control_servlet?accion=0 then search on Moctezuma and 1574 then click on Mapas y Planos then click on Arbol genealógico de los descendientes de Moctezuma then click Ver imágenes

To Armando,
Thank you for correcting my statement regarding Mariana. I was unaware that she had also been referred to as Marina. It is important to not confuse her as the Marina that served as interpreter for Cortez. Other records name her as Mariana or Leonor.

You might want to look into "Crónica mexicáyotl" by Fernando Alvarado Tezozomoc, written in Nahuatl and translated into castellano.

It's the history of the Aztecs, names their kings and advisors and gives genealogy. It doesn't mention Petrona, but it does mention Leonor ("Maria" in this text), lets see if this link works:
