Research Digest, Vol 114, Issue 21

I have been researching my Sierra family in and around Tenamaxtlan and
Ayutla as well as Autlan de Navarro.

I have Jose Vicente Sierra b1826 marrying Nicolasa Sanchez/s.

Has anyone read "The Encomderos of New Spain 1521-1555"

I copied and pasted this review. Has anyone read this book?

I do not have them in my tree however that does not mean that they don't tie in to mine at some point. Are all of these Placencia's in Cuquio?

I have Pedro de Placencia marrying Melchora de los Reyes Moscoso y Sandoval in Nochistlan in 1668. Their children were born, raised, married in the Cuquio records.

Hello Mario,

Do you have any information on known uncles and aunts to help make the connection? I have seen records where the child was baptized a couple of years after being born. My wife's great grandfather was also ten years younger than everyone thought. The January 3 looks correct, just the year is off.

I do know that my great Grandfather (Jose Genovevo Gutierrez), born in Jalostotitlan January 3, 1884 (per civil registry record) and baptized January 6, 1884 (per church record) had a brother by the name of Francisco Gutierrez. I don't know when Francisco was born, yet. Of course, my Great Grandfather was supposedly born on January 3, 1872, but I have still have yet to find such a record to match the oral history.

Returning to his (Jose Genovevo's) brother, all I know so far is that Francisco Gutierrez had a daughter (Josefina) and I believe a son (Albino) that lived in Guadalajara. Josefina Gutierrez married a Salvador Leal, and last lived in Guadalajara.

I don't know about any other existing siblings for Jose Genovevo Gutierrez, but I am still investigating that.

I did want to add a comment of great appreciation for the quick and extensively detailed history you provided. Wow! I hope I get that quick at researching and synthesizing information. It truly has been an treasure finding more leads into my family history. Thank you!

Hi Primo!

There is another area located under the label "Archdiocese of Guadalajara, Miscellaneous Marriage Records." Have you looked at this other group of films?

Here is the link to the list of films under this section:

https://familysearch.org/search/image/viewer#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilyse…

These films haven't been indexed yet, although I believe Katy has looked through some of them. They appear to be single page scans, too. I've only looked through them quickly, but it may be that the missing dispensa can be located in one of those films.

Why these records are separate from the others, I couldn't tell you. If I hadn't been curious about them, I wouldn't have looked at them.

the Archdiocese of Guadalajara is more organized than the guadalajara dispensas, and has no ordenes or capellenias in them and some marriage documents found in guadalajara dispensas aren't found in Archdiocese of Guadalajara.

I had been doing something similar except with a single Excel worksheet and
it includes all films, whether they have been indexed or not. This way I
can look at the list for a certain date and tell if I need to search the
book myself or not. I just edited my worksheet to take out some personal
notes and I uploaded it to Dropbox. By using Dropbox anyone can access the
file without having to log in to NuestrosRanchos. It's the one called Index
of Dispensas.xlsx

Hello Rosalinda. Others will have surely already thanked you for your great contribution by doing these master files, saving us all a lot of work. I have two questions: I am missing in the list the year 1873, do you know if there's any information for this year but yet to be indexed? I know that my great grandparents got a dispensation and were married in april 1873 in Arandas.
The other question is: do you know how much time in advance the dispensation had to be requested (that is, if the couple wanted to get married at a particular date)? Or: how long did such a process last, i.e. from the !Información matrimonial" till the date the marriage was officially authorized?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give or for refering to somebody who knows.

Comentario

Hi Belinda,

What you see on the lists is the most up-to-date status of what has been indexed. Since 1873 isn't listed, it hasn't been indexed yet. However, you could search for the record yourself, by going page by page in the dispensas film. The link for 1873 is

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18519-203-9?cc=1874591&wc=M9… .

Typically, the films are not in chronological order, so this means you must go page by page, which is why indexing is so tedious. However, if you know they received a dispensation, then it is likely that it is in that film. I usually notice that the dispensation process started anywhere from 1 to 3 months before the marriage date, although this varies. However, as I said, since the films are out of order, you'll need to search the entire film.

Good luck in your search!

just want to mention that i'm still working the 1836 collections.i've only finished index the first 5 parts. i'm working on part 6 right as of right now. might get it done later today or tomorrow

Comentario

Katy,

As you add to your site, I'll update the lists. There really is a tremendous number of films. I was helping Claudia with her site. I decided that since there were so many films currently covered at three locations, it would be a good idea to keep a master list.

Hi, I searched my tree and did not find those two names you mentioned above. I have many Duran ancestors, but from Nochistlan.

The only Duran/Alvarez marriage I have is Juan Alvarez and Maria Felicina Duran (my 3rd GGP). They were from Apozol and Nochistlan. My Duran line does go all the way to Simon Duran and Regina Aguayo which are mentioned in Capitulo 2 from the book mentioned.

If you can provide more info, like birth dates or parents, children, etc.. maybe someone else from Nuestros Ranchos can identify them. There are many members with Duran ancestors and maybe they can help.

Interesting Katy and thank you for viewing the Diocesis De Guadalajara Archive. Your in 1762 and in the Monte Escobedo area?

Have you seen any information on:

Antonio Madera (1660 - 1709)/ Maria De La Candelaria Angon (1655 - 1735)

You had found the surname of Maria De La Candelaria which is Angon which was a big help for me. Any more information would be greatly appreciated.

Also looking for:

Joseph Madera(1684 - 1734) / Josepha Basquez? (Velasquez)

Blas Madera / Maria Theresa Avila

Those three generations were in the Mezquitic area before moving over to Huejuquilla

Comentario

That is not an actual "dispensa", its just a verification by a higher authority of the declarations. reason (although not stated on the document) is because the priest in the parish wasn't sure of the facts. The three witnesses are from the same area than the groom, (this is no bride witnesses) plus two of them are related. Usually the Priest would just send the declarations to the parish where the groom belongs to, then the other priest there could verify if the groom was in fact who he said and that he was eligible to marry. For some reason (I believe because it was out of the jurisdiction of Nueva Galicia) they did not send it to Samora but rather to Guadalajara.

Comentario

I'm guessing it's because anytime a widow/widower remarries again, the Church needs to verify and document that the widow/widower is truly eligible to marry again under Church doctrine.

There is also a DNA project at FTDNA for the states of Jalisco, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas at https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/nueva-galicia-dna/about

Getting autosomal tests at all of the companies helps to understand the process a bit better and see the strengths and weaknesses of each of them as well as find as many relatives as possible. 23andme is the best when it comes to ethnicity.

FTDNA is the best for determining the direct paternal and maternal lines and the Family Finder test can still be helpful even though not as accurate as 23andme.

None of the companies will help determine which indigenous tribe from Jalisco a person belongs to.

Comentario

Sorry i just want to learn, i been told about this web page that states that they can identify the tribes. You seem to be an expert on the subject so please let me know your opinion.

http://www.dnatribes.com/

http://www.dnatribes.com/sample-results/hispanic-sample-native-american…

I am trying to contact 23 and me to have then join the data base. And to include the results or offer the result for extra charge.

Comentario

I have no idea how accurate they are for Mexican indigenous ancestry. From what I have seen of the other results they could easily cause confusion even though they state the following in an FAQ at http://www.dnatribes.com/faq.php

Your top matches reflect the populations in our database where your DNA profile is most common. A match with a particular ethnic or national population sample does not guarantee that you or a recent ancestor (parent or grandparent, for instance) are self-identified “members” of that ethnic group. However, a match does indicate a population where your combination of ancestry is common, which is most often due to shared ancestry with that population.

Another problem is that you need a lot of people to compare to and it doesn't seem they have sharing or a forum setup for that.

Why are you trying to contact 23andme? To join which database? To include results in which database? DNAtribes uses autosomal STR markers and 23andme uses autosomal SNP markers and they aren't compatible.

well i am not an expert on the subject. All i am interested is for them two share the raw data. And for 23 and me to show the results of the tribes company analysis in their system for a fee. 23 and me has a better set up to communicate with other people and have better labs to do raw data analysis. And since i am interested in the interpretation of the data by the tribes company.

In another words i am interested in 23 and me to sub contract tribes company to show their interpretation of the raw data in our 23 account for a fee.

Hi, try bottom link. I started thread back September 2014 asking the same question. Some members gave me great advice on where to look.

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/22433

Also, on Nuestros Ranchos website go under "Files" "Reference Materials" and half way down you will find Jalpa Marriages 1819-1827. It is in excel form and contains a lot of valuable information not found on family search. Save the Excel form into your computer and it has two tabs in the bottom "Parcial 80" and "Libro 81" You will find under "Libro 81"

I also uploaded copy of Jalpa Padron 1820 if you are interested. Under "Reference Material"

You got my attention when you mentioned "Duran", I was able to trace my Duran ancestors to the book GENEALOGIAS DE NOCHISTLAN ANTIGUO REINO DE LA NUEVA GALICIA

Good Luck

Hi Raul,

I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions to clarify so we can help you better.

1. Which records have you searched already? Both the church and civil records?

2. How many of the years did you search before and after the date?

3. Did your grandmother have any siblings, and have you found their records?

4. Was she born in Jerez the town, or was she born on one of the ranchos?

5. Have you searched knowing that her full name may not match exactly the name you've identified? Enriqueta may have been a middle name.

Once we know the answers to these questions, I think we should be able to give you better advice.

Thank you Rosalinda for your response.I have tried from 1878-1886. Husband,Paulino Acuna Cristerna, was  born in June 22, 1877,(Ojo Caliente,Jerez,or Chihuhahua,) so I have tried to figure out her age from this also. Her death record reported by her son, my uncle, indicates  a 1883 year of birth; her marriage record of June 28,1899,Jerez,Image # 473-565 of 767 images, indicates that she was 19 years old, making her birth year, 1880. Her date of birth is April 24, 1880-1886.I figured she was 1 to 5 years younger than her husband. Records of her children's birth records also show different ages. Her children were born in Guanacevi, Durango; her mother,Amada Avila Medina, remarried a Marciano Camps Carlos and had several children in Guanacevi; I have searched in several cities listed under the Zacatecas state; her only other name would have been Queta, or Maria, as many in Mexico were named. Her father,Faustino Alva, died when he was thrown off a horse, before she was born.I am not familiar with any ranchos around the area. Again, thank you for the response and I keep praying that one day I will find it. Sometimes, I just click on a strange city under the Zacatecas state, in hopes of lucking our.Sincerely and Saludos, Raul Cristerna Luna

Raul,

My first suggestion is to search the time period before what you have searched already, going page by page. While it may be generally true that the wives are younger than the husbands, that is not always the case. I would work my way backwards from the dates you've looked at, and the day and month may not be accurate-- have you looked at the records page by page, or just on that specific birthdate? Most of my great-grandparents and even grandparents had incorrect birthdates, and I've found records even years before/after what I expected. Even dates on headstones can be wrong.

I do see in the informacion matrimonial that Enriqueta was born in Jerez, but that may or may not be accurate as well. Furthermore, you may have to prepare yourself for the idea that her record may be missing altogether (this happened to one of my ancestors-- all his siblings were baptized in the same church, his marriage record lists his birthplace, etc., but I am unable to find his baptism certificate).

Have you found Enriqueta's parents' marriage record? Usually the children are born in the same area, but not always. It could be true that they moved a lot, so she could have been born in Jerez but baptized elsewhere-- sometimes the baby was a bit older when baptized, although that happened closer to the end of the 19th/start of the 20th centuries. This is my observation, though. Have you ever found Enriqueta's father's death record? If he died before her birth, that could give you an idea as to a date for her birth. Check the civil and church records for that.

These are just some suggestions; I wish you all the best luck.
