Anselmo,

It turns out that we do have some common ancestors.

I am related to you through Fermin A. Apecechea’s first wife, Maria Gertrudis Justa Flores y Garcia, who is the mother of Manuel Apecechea.

I descend from a third cousin of Maria Gertrudis Justa Flores y Garcia. There are also other common ancestral lines.

*******Felipe de Jesus (#6) is listed as a descendant of María del Rio y Losa and Andrés García de la Cadena and the Felipe Garcia de Cadena that is married to Bernardina Tello de Orozco is listed as a son of Andres Garcia de la Cadena, so it is highly likely that the two Felipe’s are the same person and he has two marriages.

(Felipe de Jesus and Maria Josefa also have a son named Felipe Garcia de la Cadena, and another son named Bernardo.

6)- Antonia Victoria García de la Cadena, b. 1732 m. 1752 Manuel Flores Correa b. 1729

7)-María Gertrudis Justa Flores Correa y García de la Cadena, b. 1753 in Pánuco, Zacatecas, Mexico. m. 1782 Fermin Antonio Apecechea b. 1751.

8)- Manuel José Antonio Tomas Apezechea Flores Correa, b.14June1786. And Francisca Murillo (Morillo) (not married)

9)- Matias Apecechea b. ca 1811 m. 8/March/1833 Isidora Ruelas (daughter of Jose Ruelas and Victoriana de Ledesma

10)- Santiago de Apecechea b. ca 1840, d. 6/April/1892.

======================================================

1)- Juan Martinez de Correa and Juana

2)- Juana Correa, m. 29 Aug 1708 m. 29 Aug 1708 Pedro Flores Bustos c. 17/July/1673 (son of Mathias Flores and Ana de Bustos)

5)- Manuel José Antonio Tomas Apezechea Flores Correa, b.14June1786. And Francisca Murillo (Morillo) (not married)

6)- Matias Apecechea b. ca 1811 m. 8/March/1833 Isidora Ruelas (daughter of Jose Ruelas and Victoriana de Ledesma

7)- Santiago de Apecechea b. ca 1840, d. 6/April/1892.

Dear Anselmo,

I am curious as to your descent from the Apecechea family. Do you descend from Julio Apecechea and Maximiana Tamayo? They had few children as they both passed away at a relatively young age. Julio Apecechea was only forty years old when he passed away and his record identifies him as a widower.

I am related through Santiago Apecechea & Cirila Perez. Julio Apecechea is his son but I believe his mother was Dionosia Pineda Both La Yesca & Hostotipaquillo were known for their mines.

I am interested because the name is so unique & easily researchable. What is yours?

Anselmo,

I do not descend from the Apecechea family, but like you, I did find the name to be an interesting one to research. You called it “easily researchable” yet I think that what made this research easier was the collaboration. You found two key pieces that uncovered two different puzzles. The first piece that you found was Matias Apecechea’s third marriage that named his father. In all the other records, only his mother is named and he is called “hijo natural”. The second important puzzle piece that you found was that Fermin had also come over to Mexico as I only had his brother coming over. Since Fermin died in Spain, I had previously assumed that he had lived there all his life. Once you found that Fermin had come to Mexico, I was able to research his family here in Mexico and discover that his son Manuel was the “Manuel”we were looking for as father of Matias Apecechea.

There are still a few unanswered questions though. We already know that Fermin and Matias had multiple marriages, but the question remains regarding how many wives/relationships did Santiago have. It seems that he may have had children with four women. Back then many women died giving birth so it was common for men to end up having multiple wives/relationships. Santiago’s death record names him as a widower, but only names his parents.

In an earlier post I mistakenly wrote that I was surprised that Santiago married so soon after his wife’s passing. That was an error. The person that I was surprised about was Matias, Santiago’s father. I believe that Santiago may only have been married once and that was to Saturnina Gonzalez. It seems that all the other children that Santiago had are “hijos naturales”. The children that Santiago procreated with Dionicia Pineda and Severiana Miramontes are “hijos naturales”.

Pascual Apecechea is the legitimate son of Santiago Apecechea and Saturnina González. ( There are two records regarding Pascual’s marriage to Mariana Hernández. In one record his mother is named as what looks to be be Agustina Gonzalez. In the other record it is clear that his mother’s name is given as Saturnina Gonzalez ( daughter of Jose Deciderio Gonzales López and Maria Bernardina Nuñez Bañuelos. I was able to build a family tree up to Saturnina’s great grandparents, with leads that show promise to go even further back.)

Pascual Apecechea González m. 17/Aug/1887 Mariana Hernández

Ramona Apecechea is the daughter of Santiago Apecechea and Severiana Miramontes.

Ramona Apecechea Miramontes m. José Refugio López González and they are the parents of Maria Eleuterio López Apecechea c. 24/Feb/1889 in La Yesca, Nayarit.

Julio Apecechea is “hijo natural” of Santiago Apecechea and Dionicia Pineda.

Julio had at least two wives, Maximiana Tamayo, and Elena Avalos and had a third relationship where he had a child out of wedlock “hija adulterina” named Marciana Apecechea with Hemenegilda Ledesma.

I would like to see the record that names Cirila Perez in order to add her to the other women that had children with Santiago Apecechea. Santiago Apecechea did have a grandchild named Sirila, through his son Julio. Santiago also had a son named Cirilo Apecechea.

Thanks,

Hello Rick,

I am back. I went to Hosto & La Yesca. i asked around for the Apecechea family, but no one had heard that name in Hosto. There was a Chinese company doing some mining a couple of years ago but I have not heard of any recent minings. I know there was talk of mining in La Yesca but nothing has come of it.
Here is my connection to the Apecechea family:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-3X98-HP?i=601&wc=M647-…

This would make Santiago my 3x great grandfather. He had various wives. Including Cirila Perez, he also married Severiana Miramontes, Gertrudes Ledesma & Dionicia Pineda. For Matias, i have records for (A)polonia Gonzalez, Isidora Ruelas, Maria Isidora Ledesma (same as Ruelas?), & Josefa Haro.
Matias had other children including Justo Apecechea Gonzalez & Dominga Apecechea Ruelas. There was one other but she died 5 days later.

Would it be possible to send the link confirming Manuel is Fermin's son. I would like to add it to my records. I wonder if Fermin mentioned Manuel is his will?

Best!

Fermin Antonio Apecechea returned to Spain in 1822. He passed away on 17/June/1834 in Cadiz, Andalucia, Spain. There is a street named after him, “Calle Fermin Antonio Apecechea” in Goizueta.

Fermin Antonio Apecechea returned to his beloved Spain. He was famous for many reasons, his work in mines, his government posts, the honors bestowed on him and his philanthropy for the provision of music education to children.

Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea and Fermin Antonio Apecechea have a sister named “María Feliciana Romana Apecechea Flores Correa”.

María Feliciana Romana Apecechea Flores Correa is an ancestor of:

María del Rosario Jiménez Ruiz,VI Marquesa de Santa Rosa De Lima. She was born in 1989 in Madrid. Maria del Rosario was named after her maternal grandmother who was married to a “ Magistrado del Tribunal Supremo Español.” María del Rosario’s parents were first cousins, both of them descendants of Maria Feliciana Romana Apecechea Flores Correa.

I believe that Santiago Apecechea was born in Nayarit, and not in Zacatecas. His parents lived in Nayarit at the time of his birth. It is possible that his father may have been born in Zacatecas, The “Apecechea” had arrived from Spain the century before from Spain. The Apecechea first arrived in Mexico City in the 1700’s. From Mexico City, the family branched out to Guanajuato and other areas, like Nayarit.
Santiago Apecechea married almost immediately after his first wife’s death, which I found surprising.

Apecechea

Saludos,

Here is some more information on the roots of the Apecechea family.

Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea was baptized on 2/July/1751 in Goizueta Navarra Spain.

His parents are Ygnacio Apecechea and María Josepha de Arrieta

His paternal grandparents are Pedro Apecechea and Ana María de Echenique.

His maternal grandparents are Pedro de Arrieta and Emerenciana Juantorena.

Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea crossed the Atlantic Ocean and brought the Apecechea surname to Mexico. Since this surname came over after mid eighteenth century, the surname is not as common in Mexico as are other surnames.

You will find that the names Ygnacio, Pedro, and Pascual are common names in the Apecechea family tree in Mexico.

Because of the time frame, Matias Apecechea is a close descendant of Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea de Arrieta. Matias could be his grandson or great-grandson. Son would be a tight fit, possible, but unlikely. Since Matias is a “hijo natural” we may not find records identifying exactly how he descends from Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea.

Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea Was married twice, to Ma. Ygnacia Itsurria. They had many children and they were baptized in Mexico City. Some of his children went to Nuevo León and married there. From there they most likely spread to Zacatecas and Nayarit.

Rick,

i don't know if you have an interest in the Apecechea family. I found this UNAM paper on Pascual, and I found out his brother, Fermín, also settled in Zacatecas, México.

Just FYI,

Anselmo

Great work Anselmo,

I had not known that Fermin had also come to Mexico. That was the missing piece in this puzzle.

Matias Apecechea and Isidora Ruelas are the parents of Santiago Apecechea. Santiago was approximately 51 years old according to his death record in 6/Apr/1892.

Matias and Isidora were married on 8/March/1833. Matias was previously married to Polonia Gonzalez. Matias Apecechea is “hijo natural” de Francisca Murillo.

There was a VillaNueva in what is now “Los Altos de Jalisco.”

Ignacio Apecechea was originally from Goizueta, Navarrra España before he came to Nueva Galicia. It will be difficult, though not impossible, to connect Matias Apecechea to Ygnacio Apecechea because Matias was a “hijo natural.”. Ygnacio is most likely his grandfather or great grandfather.

Great Find Anselmo! Great that you found Matias’s third marriage. In Matias’s first two marriages, his father, Manuel Apecechea, is not named.

Because of the dates involved, it does seem likely that Manuel Apecechea is the son of Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea de Arrieta. But I say likely, as Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio could have had a child as a young teenager, and that child could also have had a child as a young teenager, and then Manuel himself fathering Matias at a young age. which would make Manuel a grand child. But I am just stating a slight possibility, as it is most likely that Manuel is his son. You were very lucky to find the name of Matias’s father since only his mother was named in the records of his first two marriages where he is described as being illegitimate. Hopefully some of that luck will carry over and we find a record showing Manuel’s descent from Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea de Arrieta. I do have more information on the ancestry of Pascual Ygnacio Eugenio Apecechea de Arrieta.

Fernández was given penance of 47,080 maravedis. Sometimes the Inquisition would give a financial penalty as penance, but the reconciled person could not count on the Inquisition accepting it.
He sent merchandise to Hispaniola consigned to Bernardo de Jerez, who at Gonzalo's death owed him certain monies.
Don Fernando de la Torre, dean and canon, was named tutor and caretaker of the children. A.P.S. VI 1516 [=3976].

I think the document does say her age, if I recall correctly. I believe she was in her early 30s at the time. It never says which Hernan Flores de la Torre is the father, so all we can safely assume is that Hernan Flores de la Torre and Ana de Sandi are grandparents or great grandparents. There's Hernan Flores de la Torre y Sandi and another Hernan Flores de la Torre who is the son of Luis Flores de la Torre y Sandi (I don't have the name of Luis' wife. I've seen a Maria Delgadillo but no sources.) I really wish people wouldn't add parents without sources. I know linking sources is time consuming, but at least put a note giving us a clue!

Re: <>

My last known Banuelos ancestor is Juan Banuelos, who was married to Maria Ignez Muñoz. Both date back to the late 1600's and early 1700's. According to your data, Juan's father was Dionisio Banuelos, whose name comes up repeatedly in my review of the church records from Mezquitic (Mesquitic) Jalisco. I suspect these are the same people. In reviewing the data from Mezquitic, it is clear that the Banuelos families had a huge number of offspring, so it is no wonder that there are a largne number of people who may be related to the Banuelos mentioned above.

I do have a couple of questions however. Can you give me further data on your information? That is, can you tell me where to look that would verify what Mr. Valdes and Mr. de la Torre have told you about Dionisio Banuelos, the last known Banuelos? I am familiar with Mr. de la Torre as a genealogist but would like a primary source, rather than a secondary oral one.

The second question, if not the more interesting one, is one relates to the wife of Dionisio Banuelos, i.e. Catalina de Lamas. Is the latter person's apellido Lamas or Llamas. In reviewing Ancestry.com the above mentioned Salvador Cabral Valdes has made mention of the Llamas, not Lamas, of Jerez Zacatecas, see http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.mexico.zacatecas/832.1.3/…. Again, are the Lamas the same as the Llamas?

I am not trying to be difficult but only trying to obtain more information and verify old.

Thank you,

It has been awhile since I followed up on this Banuelos line. Given the previous discussions, there appears to be quite a number of Banuelos descendants from the Jerez/Monte Escobedo/Rio Atoloque who are on this board. The last major discussion was this link http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18016.

I believe I might have been able to extend the Banuelos tree described in the link above back to Diego Temino de Banuelos and Baltasar Temino de Banuelos. See my Banuelos_092019 pdf in my genealogy files. I believe the first three generations are fairly solid and the subsequent generations starting with Dionicio Banuelos and Catalina de Lamas are solid, as discussed in the above link. The major question is whether the DIego Banuelos and Maria Benavides y Delgado line is correct. It is literally the missing link.

I put this out not as Gospel but simply as a source of discussion/debate. I am hesitant to unequivocally state this Banuelos line (which is my line too) goes back to Baltasar de Banuelos, one of the four founders of Zacatecas. However, you can also review a limpieza de sangre document in my genealogy files which comments on don Juan Banuelos and Dona Ygnes Munoz line, "que estos descendian de los conquistadores de la Ciudad Real Y minas de Zacatecas."

I am asking for help/comments. I know there are Benavides on the is board. My major hesitation is that the missing link suggested above may be another cousin or similar relative. It seems that many Banuelos generations loved the first name Dionicio and Diego.

Comment

I have a few links I saved from years back. I did not see Diego Banuelos in the "Outline Descendant Report for Dionisio Banuelos" from one of the original posts. Some of the links below show Diego Banuelos' parents as Dionisio Banuelos and Catalina Llamas. Diego Banuelos Defuncion clearly states "quintas nupcias" which has him married five times. It was very challenging to research this line given the many Banuelos' last name. Anyway, I attached the marriage links I believe to belong to Diego Banuelos. If you read the marriage record, some give clues of the previous marriage which helps.

I descend from Diego de Banuelos and Maria de Benavides y Delgado through their daughter Maria (cc. Nicolas Sanchez Castellanos) and I THINK their son Pedro (cc. Bartola Flores - an illegitimate child of one of the Hernan Flores de la Torres)

I've spent a lot of time with the Teul baptism film and I can say that Diego and Maria's daughter Leonor (cc.

It looks to me like Diego Banuelos may have remarried to an Isabel Gonzalez/Delgado after Maria Benavides' death. I don't have all my links in front of me, but they start having children in the early 1660s - a little too young to be Diego Banuelos y Benavides (Diego and Maria's son b. 1648 I believe)

Diego and Isabel have a son Antonio who marries in Tlatlenango in 1686

There was also a Baltazar Banuelos who married Josefa Beruman in Tlaltenango 1685. He says he's from the City of Zacatecas and the natural son of a Diego Banuelos, deceased, and an Isabel de Salazar
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-BR1K-Z?i=156&cc=1804458

The interesting thing about this Baltazar is that he later calls himself Baltazar Onate y Banuelos
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-1S43-3?cc=1804458&wc=3PSC-…

I have seen a couple of trees that have these two Diegos as the same person and a son of Diego Temino de Banuelos and Catalina de Onate y Rivadeneira. But if Diego Banuelos and Maria Benavides are the parents of Dionicio and Leonor Banuelos then Diego being a son of Dionicio Banuelos and Leonor del Castillo makes more sense.

Comment

Hello,
I found another child of theirs.
My 9th great grandmother is María Bañuelos Benavides bap. 11/11/1652 in Teul.

Record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXRS-JMF
She married Nicolas Sanchez Castellanos bal. 9/20/1643 in Tlaltenango, son of Tomasina de Haro cc Juan Sánchez Castellano.

With all the Diego’s and Bañuelos, Sadly i cannot find proof of who the parents of Diego Bañuelos cc María Benavides are. I think Dionisio makes sense but there are a few possibilities.
Maven.

Comment

I'm thinking leonicio banuelos and leonor reyes are seperate people/couple than dionisio banuelos/leonor castillo. the main reason why i believe this is because diego was born in 1630's which makes the latter couple too old to be his parents. i'm thinking leonciio/dionisio who married leonor reyes is either a son of nephew of the one who married leonor castillo

Hi Andrea,
I have in my tree Barthola Flores de la Torre and Pedro Bañuelos too, according to their marriage dispense she was the daughter of an indigenous woman named Maria Magdalena and of Hernan Flores de la Torre... I cannot find any other document to confirm which Hernan Flores de la Torre is... or who are her grandparents... I think she was from Mezquituta but I have not been able to find any information ...
Do you have any information regarding this or idea where I could find it?

Thank you!

Term: Morisca

Hello, is anyone familiar with the term "Morisca'? I believe it appears after the daughter and mother's name on Pasquela Prudencia's 1749 San Luis Potosi birth record on the link listed below.

Comments

Comment

It is a good exercise to take the "casts" with a grain of salt, this terms were, in real life very loosely used in colonial México, thus you will see for example that among siblings there could be different casts, or very often the word "mulato" for actual "meztiso" people. etc.

Although Moro refers originally to an African Muslim, in my personal point of view, I found that "morisco" was likely used to denote a child of darker skin color but not dark enough to be a "mulato" probably similar to what we call today "trigueño", this regardless of the actual ethical background.

Comment

The terms used for castes in Spain differed from those used in the Colonies. While in Spain, “Morisca/o” meant “Muslim,” in Mexico, it was used for a person with one European parent (white) and one Mulato parent (of European and African parentage). Basically, a child with 3 White grandparents and 1 Black grandparent. But as RJQ mentions, the caste system was ambiguous and arbitrary.

Not sure if the brides mother's last name is "peres" or "lares". probably the former.

Juan Francisco Sanchez Alvarez

Genealogical Coin Collecting

I visited my parents for christmas and my dad happened to be doing inventory on his massive coin collection. For the first time ever I saw it in its entirety.

I had significant grandparents born and another pair married in 1793 in Zacatecas. I was able to find a 1793 piece of 8 that was minted in Zacatecas. I find it interesting to hold in my hand something that my ancestors might have held in their hands and used in exchange for goods.

Yea I wish I did. I have from 1730s and later. Before that they were "cob" coins. I don't know enough about those yet to make an educated purchase but they are on my radar!

Comment

The 8 reales coin was referred to as a “piece of 8” because it was divided into 8 parts, or bits. The coins were 1, 2, 4, and of course 8 reales. These coins also circulated widely in Colonial American, and around the world. The two reales coin was equivalent to 25¢, hence the term 2 bits. 50¢ was 4 reales, or 4 bits.

Comment

Thanks for the info! I've got maybe 30 or so of the coins (1/2 real - 8 reales) now ranging from 1730-1820. According to an inflation calculator, the 4 reales is about $20 in todays dollars. Not a bad coin!

The coins of Mexico are fascinating, and a mirror of its history. They begin not too long after Cortes. If you have any from the 1500s, they are real treasures!

Ethics and Geneaology

Hello,

I personally would not object to someone hundreds/thousands of years from now performing DNA tests on my bones (well sorry but I plan on being cremated). Just saying that it would be so interesting to me if I could find an ancestors tomb and be able to perfom a DNA test on them and compare it to my DNA test. So if you find projects or initiatives that are taking this approach please email me as I'd be interested in their results Joseph Puentes makas@nc.rr.com

Question about geneology of Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes

My question is about what provinces to be included in the geneology of Nuestros Ranchos.

If someone applies to the group and they are researching Nayarit and/or Colima I accept them into the group. If someone even suspects their roots might come from Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Nayarit and/or Colima I accept them into the group as long as they focus on our area of research. Having said that I don't interfere with the discussion unless I see it is causing a problem.

Comment

Many good points have been made regarding how jurisdictions changed over time. One other point I'd like to make is that we sometimes underestimate/forget how mobile our ancestors really were. I have found many a family that stayed for generations in one single place while other families frequently settled in one place than later migrated to another place within the same or subsequent generations. In my case, had I just focused my genealogical research to just Jalisco records, I would have missed out on the true origins of some of my ancestors who migrated from Spain -> Michoacan -> Jalisco, etc.

Comment

That's true about the mobility, and that's why as long as there is a connection to the 3 states, I've understood that it's fine to post. I am a moderator here, and I very rarely delete, since so many discussions are so fruitful.

Comment

The founder of this group decided that NR should focus on only these 3 states for the site. It has been this way from the beginning, to keep the attention focused on the genealogical interests of this area. Unless he decides to change his mind, we will stay focused. There are other areas of Mexico/New Spain that have special genealogy groups for them, so one could go there or start another site, I suppose.

Comment

What Rosalinda says in her post is all true. I just want to add that in my experience the NR community tends to be more inclusive in scope rather than exclusive. If one searches the NR website using the keywords Michoacan, Guanajuato, Nayarit, or Colima, for instance, one can see that there are many, many posts that fall outside of NR’s stated geographic focus. (A search of the keyword Texas shows 55 pages of results!)

It could be that in practice the focus is broader because of the fact that various family lines can be traced to places that are outside of the boundaries of the modern Mexican states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes. Also, as Antonio points out in the original post, it could be because the current boundaries of the above mentioned states do not correspond exactly with the boundaries of the historic administrative entities that came before them. Even the modern boundaries can be problematic. One has to remember that Jalisco has been partitioned at least once, that I can think of, since its founding in 1823 (Nayarit, 1917).

On the whole, I think most contributions here are appreciated by the NR community regardless of how strong or tenuous a geographic link they may have to the modern states of Jalisco, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. But I may be wrong about this.

Comment

Thanks. Yes, I agree with you-- in practice, it has not been so clear cut, and I think Joseph's attitude is that as long as there is a connection, tenuous it may be, to Aguascalientes, Jalisco, and Zacatecas, it's fine. However, to remove that parameter overall could mean more moderation and attention is needed for the website, when there are few volunteers for such tasks.

I don't think Joseph's expectation is too much, considering he is the founder, and he's always been generous. I just don't want a free-for-all where people post everything and anything (I am a moderator at Mexican Genealogy on Facebook, and it's a job to moderate it, and we have a team of volunteers there!).
