It is inaccurate to say that some of these families were Italians only because they came from Genoa, not Italy. The country that we know as “Italy” did not exist in the 1500’s. I have done a tremendous amount of research looking for Carlo Lomelin’s ancestry. I don’t know anyone that has investigated this family as much as I have. Steven Francisco Hernandez has provided valuable puzzle pieces that support my research on Carlo Lomelin’s ancestors. Through private conversations, I have also provided Steven with information about a treasure trove of Lomelin documents that I have found proving the Genoese ancestors. I asked Steven to not disclose all of the information that I had shared with him until I published my book. Steven is also correct that Guido Lavezzari comes from another Genoese family as primary source records also identify his paternal ancestors as Genoese. Steven is also correct that the Espinoza surname was originally Spinola and that they had its origins in Genoa. The surname Lomellini went through changes as the family branches out to Spain, Portugal, and England. The Lomellini became Lomelin in Spain, Lomelino in Portugal, and a few different variations in England. Carlo Lomelin and Luis Lomelin left many descendants in Los Altos de Jalisco.   Carlo and Luis Lomelin were said by family to be brothers, but I am not sure if the Luis Lomelin in Mexico is his brother or his uncle, as his father also had an brother named Luciano (Luis) Lomelin.  Carlo (Carlos) Lomelin did have a brother named Luciano (Luis) Lomelin.   Carlo also had an uncle named Luciano (Luis) Lomelin. There were many siblings in this family. Another brother of Carlo Lomelin handled his affairs when he passed away.   The Carlos Lomelin that is my ancestor is not the same CarLo Lomellini that is the son of Porzia (Porchia). That Carlo Lomelini that is the son of Porzia is a fourth cousin. Spanish “Lomelin” surname became Lomeli in Los Altos De Jalisco, and that was just relatively recently, as my wife’s maternal grandfather stated that he originally signed his name Lomelin before his children were born. His children were the first in the family to not have the “n” at the end of the surname. There are many primary sources showing the presence of “Italians” on the Iberian Peninsula. This is a fact that is proven without much research, so I don’t know why anyone that is a researcher would deny where these families came from. In fact, parts of what we now consider Italy had closer affiliation at different times to Aragon and Castilla (which were also separate kingdoms) than some other “Italian City-States”.

Mr. Ricci,

Thank you for the incredible wealth of information. I was considering shelving my research for a few months, until I pushed myself to research a bit more, few minutes here and there. I came across this golden nugget and I am going to push on. Thank you. I stem from Lomeli/Lomelin/Lomellini. Although I am stuck on Onofre Lomelin ( -1759) married to Angela Iniguez/Yniguez. They married on or about 2/13/1754...
Looking forward to buying your book! Namaste.

Hello Laura,

Onofre Lomelin Nuñez married Angela de Jesus Yniguez on 13/Feb/1754 in Tepatitlan, Jalisco.   Onofre Lomelin is originally from the “puesto de Palmarejo”.  Angela de Jesus is the daughter of Blas Yniguez and Margarita Gonzales.  Onofre’s father is not named in the marriage record, but that doesn’t mean that it is a dead end.  The marriage record of one of my wife’s Lomeli ancestror’s father wasn’t named in the marriage record, but by digging deeper I was able to discover his name and ancestry.

Maria Nuñez is the daughter of Josepha Trejo.  I believe that that Maria Nuñez’s father is Juan Nunez.    Juan Nunez and Josefa Trejo had children born in Cuquio Jalisco.

Marriage record : https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-KMSZ-JM?lang=en      Page 181

Juan Nuñez Josepha Trejo married on 16/Jan/1713 in Cuquío, Jalisco

Juan is the son of Andres Nuñez and Josepha Ximenez

Maria Josefa is the daughter of Salvador de Trejo and Michaela Geronima

Good luck in your research,

don Juan Cristobal de Luna y Tapía: Indio and Cacique

I'm descended from don Juan Cristobal de Luna y Tapía through a few of his children. He's the purchaser (1690s) of a piece of land in Lagos de Moreno, known as Cañada de los Indios Ricos (modern Cañada de Ricos).

Any information on the following family would be helpful:

1st generation: don Juan Cristobal de Luna y Tapía born about 1635 cc Beatris Inés. (Probable brother or 1st cousin of don Francisco de Luna born about 1637 and died abt. 1686, married doña Ana Catarina de la Cruz).

2nd generation:

- Miguel Jacinto de Luna y Tapía born bef. 1652 in Encinillas, Ojuelos, Jalisco.

- Pasquala Magdalena de Luna y Tapía born before 1657 probably in Encinillas, Ojuelos, Jalisco.

- don Patricio de Luna y Tapía born before 1666 probably in Encinillas, Ojuelos, Jalisco cc doña María de la Encarnación de Alarcon (AKA María de la Cruz).

- Andrea de la Cruz (AKA Andrea de Luna) born before 1667 in Encinillas, Ojuelos, Jalisco.

- Cristobal de Luna y Tapía born about 1667 in Encinillas, Ojuelos

I’m sure you probably know that some IMs for Cienega de Mata during the late 1600s can be found in the Asuncion de Maria parish in Aguascalientes? If not, I see several Luna’s - all of them Indios, including an IM for Don Cristobal HL de Don Cristobal cc Beatriz Ynes. George Fulton indexed those IMs years ago, and uploaded them to the reference files here at NR. The filmrolls have since been rearranged, but the roll numbers remain the same, you’ll just have to go by the dates. You can download the PDFs here: https://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18014

Also, Encinillas was historically in the parish of San Matias, Pinos, Zacatecas. While there are records for Indian baptisms dating back to the late 1600s, they are well-indexed and easily found. But the IMs go back to 1650, so try digging around in that film roll. Perhaps there’s a marriage in there, and sometimes you can find ancestors appears as testigos.

I had also indexed sacramental records done in San Matias, 1613-1647, but I just checked them, and I see no Luna’s. But if you want to check, the pdf can be downloaded here: https://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/24112

Good luck!

Hello Manny,

Incredible advice. Thank you so much. I'm indebted.

I knew some of Ciénega de Mata records were indexed through Aguascalientes but didn't know the rest. I'll follow up on everything you suggest.

We are descended from the de Luna y Tapía family 3 (and maybe 4) different ways. So this line is important to us.

I'll add that there is a brief write-up on don Cristobal Luna y Tapía and La Cañada de Ricos in "Lagos Indios," by Mario Gómez de Mata. I found this book online and ordered a copy.

I was also told Gomez de Mata wrote more about this same family in another book.  If anyone has knowledge of this second book please let me know.

Thank you again.

Best,

Travis

Indios

Hello everyone!

Can anyone direct me to resources available in print or online, that specifically addresses the Tlaxcalan and Otomi families of Las Lagunas, Buenavista and the Pueblo de Moya?

I purchased and read Mario Gómez Mata's book, INDIOS, but it reads more as an historical narrative of the pueblos - which it is - but not as a genealogical work.

The majority of our Indio ancestors are Tlaxcala and Otomi and from very specific families: Rhea, Hernández del Aguila, San Joseph, de Luna y Tapia, etc.

Has anyone compiled the genealogies of the founding and early families of the Pueblos in Lagos de Moreno?

I'm trying to document our ancestors from Moya and Buenavista, but it's like pulling teeth to trace them prior to 1660 or so, with all the surname changes.

In one document, someone may be named Pedro de la Cruz and another, he's Pedro Hernándes, and then in a third document, he'll be called, Pedro del Aguila. It's a very tedious process, and I don't want to reinvent the wheel here if

Hello,

I hate that you took offense from a sincere request for advice when tracing the Indigenous Mexican ancestry of my family.

The title of my post was referencing Carlos Gómez Mata's book "Lagos Indios." I neglected to include the "Lagos" part in my haste.

I also used the term "Indios" when referencing my family's ancestors, because the parish records concerning them, specifically note them as such - without any national affiliation. That was the entire point of my post: determining national identity of colonial-era Indigenous ancestors beyond the casta designation: Indios. (Not referencing any modern population as such.)

On that subject, you mention that "settler colonial records refer only to Indigenous peoples as 'Indios.' " Not entirely, I've found many references to national affiliation in early settler records. In several, our ancestors are referred to as "Otomites" (Otomi). In others I've seen Indigenous people cited and identified as "Chichimeca."

I also read over my post and nowhere did I use the term "Indios" without capitalization, but thank you for the tip. I'll continue using it (except when quoting directly from source material)!

However, my phone and tablet habitually autocorrect posts and texts, and occasionally I'll even forget to capitalize proper nouns. So, you have my prior permission to correct me upon any occasion you feel compelled to do so. (I only ask that you make all corrections in red color, so they stand out and are easily recognized for what they are. )

Again, one last time: no offense was meant in my post where I was specifically discussing my family's colonial Indigenous ancestry in Mexico.

I sincerely appreciate your reply, and would appreciate any advice you may be able to give in discovering more about our Indigenous roots since you are so committed to and knowledgeable on the matter.

Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,

Travis

Hola Travis!

I know that the settler colonial records refer only to Indigenous peoples as "Indios" but this is a very offensive term for many Indigenous peoples or personas Indigenas o de pueblos originarios. Also, Indigenous law experts use the capital I for Indigenous. As we know better, we can do better. May I please ask that you refrain from using the term, "Indio" unless you are citing the language listed in a colonial record. As a person of Indigenous descent on my mother's side (Mexico) and my father's said (Cherokee), I would appreciate it if this space doesn't use offensive terminology when speaking about us. Thank you!

Using AI: BTW I Own No Stock!!!

This is going to sound like a paid advertisement so delete right now if it gives any of you that type of flavor. I've heard that AI can assist with genealogical research and I think it really can. Now the example I've listed below was for a very simple transcription/translation but the possibilities are there. Also there is a free version but I'm used the $49/year version which gives you a limit on usage per day almost double the free version but it also gives you access to the more advanced ai versions. Basically I went to Poe.com and subscribed to the "starter" version which gives you 10,000 points to use per day (use or lose). I've understood that the below example only used a small amount of points but just use the free version for simple examples. I simply asked it to translate the uploaded document (attached below) into English and preserve the original spellings of names and got the below. For us beginners who have limited Spanish this might be the or one of the tools to use:

Joseph,

Sounds like a pretty cool site.   Another one that is not as sophisticated, but works for me is: Transkribus

I have some very old Latin documents from England that are pretty much unreadable to me (from the 1550's).  With Transkribus, you drop your document onto their online folder, and it begins scanning (multiple passes).  When the scans have been completed, it offers you the choice of copying the transcribed document to a .PDF, .DOC, or Clipboard (as plain text).  The document scans are fairly quick, usually within a few minutes.

The thing is, once transcribed, you need to go to another free app, like "Google Translate", and convert the Latin transcription to a language you may need, in my case just plain ole English.  It is hit and miss on accuracy, but for me "something" is better then nothing (in most cases).

I only use the free version (apparently 50 free scans per month), but apparently the paid version can clean these documents up even further.

Hopefully this technology (AI) can continue to advance document interpretation, which is a major block for some researchers (such as myself) when getting back beyond the 1600's.

Hello!

Do you have more information about Sebastián Pérez de Ornelas? Maybe he is related to Juan Pérez, AKA Juan de Santoyo, (born about 1624, probably in Lagos, possibly son of Diego Pérez and an unknown daughter of María Rubio)?

The 1669 Padron de Santa María de los Lagos lists Gerónima de Ornelas, viuda, living in the household of Juan Pérez with his widow, Antonia de Villegas, AKA Antonia de Mendoza, and his children Antonio, Angelina and Ysidro (children of Juan and Antonia go by surnames of Santoyo, Pérez, Mendoza and Villegas).

No he
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18403-63357-9?cc=1874591&wc=…

name: Marcos Macias
gender: Male
burial date: 02 Mar 1736
burial place: Aguas Calientes
race: White
marital status: Married
spouse's name: Ysabel Martin Soto Mallor
father's name: Marcos Macias
mother's name: Maria Ruiz De Robalcaba

Saludos,
Armando

Francisco de Santiago and Barbara Rubio - Guachinango/Mascota (Jalisco)

Many years ago I was extremely happy to locate a Guadalajara Marriage Dispensa for my direct ancestors Pedro de Santiago Rubio and his marriage with Marcelina Navarrete year 1715 in Guachinango. The record answered many questions however I have not advanced past the Dispensa. I have looked everywhere, and have followed the guidance of many over the years but still nothing new to advance me past the year 1715 record.

I'm searching for information for Francisco de Santiago and his wife Barbara Rubio.  I have absolutely no information for them other than they were the parents of Pedro de Santiago Rubio as indicated on the dispensa.  I believe Barbara Rubio was living in Mascota before living in Guachinango.  I don't know when and where she married Francisco de Santiago. I estimate that Barbara Rubio was born approximately year 1665. And my best estimates are that Francisco de Santiago may be originally from Guachinango/Amatlan/Tepuzhuacan and born approximately year 1665.

Thank you

We all have links to the Romo de Vivar and the Ruiz de Esparza?

When I read, some time ago, that virtually all families with roots in our area of interest are descendants of "Capitanes" Diego Romo de Vivar and Lope Ruis de Esparza, I thought probably that was not

For the past 5 years I have concentrated on my mother's Chavez line of the founding fathers of New Mexico. Now I am back to trying to close loose ends in my father's Romo  de Vivar line. He descends from Salvador Ygnacio Romo de Vivar and wife, Francissca Angela Escalante, Bacanuche, Sonora, Mexico. One historian Mexicano says Salvador's daughter, Maria Rita de los Dolores Romo de Vivar y Escalante, descended from Jose Romo de Vivar, the founder of Bacanuche (and also was son of Diego Romo de Vivar and Maria Rangel). Other Researchers say this Jose Romo de Vivar went to Sinaloa and Sonora and nothing more is mentioned. I am wanting to close the gap between Jose Romo de Vivar and Salvador Ygnacio. Jose had sons Geronimo, Simon, and Jose Gabriel. And Geronimo had a son, Jose Antonio who married Maria Manuela de Anza, daughter of Juan Bautista de Anza and Maria Valenzuela. During Pancho Villa's run along the Mexican-USA Border in the 19 teens his men destroyed the town of Bacanuche, Ygnacio Pesqueira's hacienda, the church and many other structures, along with important papers and history. Gaps in church records that were destroyed may have had a marriage history on my ancestors who descended from Jose Romo de Vivar and Juana de Solis his wife. Any clues or thoughts are welcome.

We can now add George P. Bush to the Ruiz De Esparza family tree. George P. Bush is the son of Governor Jeb (John Ellis) Bush and Columba Garnica Gallo, paternal grandparents are George H. W. Bush and Barbara Pierce. George P. Bush’s maternal grandparents are José María Garnica and Josefina Gallo. The Ruiz De Esparza ancestral line is through his Gallo ancestry. I descend from Onofre Perez Gallo, brother of his Gallo ancestor.

Through George P. Bush’s mother’s ancestry, he is a 13th cousin many times removed from George Washington, the first President of the United States of America. His paternal grandfather and uncle who were Presidents of the United State are also related to George Washington through their Bush Ancestry.

I only have Lope Ruiz de Esparza so far but my people didn't stay in the area long. They seem to have wandered into Durango and settled but I have so many dead ends so here's to hoping I find a link to Diego Romo de Vivar either from Durango (mom) or Guanajuato (dad).

Can you explain what "sosa lines" are and where I would find them?

Thanks!

Coach Tom Flores coached the NFL Raiders to two championships as a head coach. He also won a championship as an assistant head coach of the Raiders. As an assistant, he was a valuable strategist that advised the head coach, Madden. He also won a NFL championship as a player with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was the backup quarterback on that chiefs team. He was also a very good quarterback when he played for the Raiders before being traded to Kansas City.

It would be nice to attend his induction to the NFL hall of fame in the summer of 2021.

I have found Ginés de Carrion, born in 1520 in Andalucía, his son Ginés de Carrion, born in 1561 in Seville emigrated to Nueva España and married Francisca de Temillo (or Tremiño), born in Jalisco and had a son: Diego de Carrion Tremiño.
Diego was born in Pinos Zacatecas in 1615, his son Antonio de Carrion was born in Aguascalientes in 1645. Diego had a daughter: Tomassa de Carrion, born 1665 and a granddaughter: Maria Nicolasa de Castañeda Carrion, born in Pinos Zacatecas in 1688 who married Martin Ruiz de Esparza y Sotelo Jaén, a descendant of Moctezuma.

Hello Jose,

I too descend Repeatedly from the Ruiz De Esparza and Romo de Vivar, so yes, we are “primos.” My maternal grandfather is a third cousin of Santo Toribio Romo Gonzalez through both the Gonzalez and Romo lines.

Super Bowl champion Coach Tom Flores Is also a primo.

Interesting Rick, they probably are descendants of Capitán Juan Pedro Romo de Vivar and María de Tiscareño Molina y Ruiz Esparza, which is also one of my Romo lines.
I have also a couple of Flores lines in Aguascalientes since two diferent great grand mothers were Flores..

I too descend repeatedly from Capitán Juan Pedro Romo de Vivar and María Lorena de Tiscareño Molina y Ruiz Esparza, from one side through their son Capitan Nicolas Romo de Vivar y Ruiz de Esparza and also from their daughter Juana Teresa Romo de Vivar Tiscareño de Molina.
6 generations after that, José Canuto Diaz Romo de Vivar who was a descendant of Nicolas married Maria Rafaela Moran Lopez who was a descendant of Juana Teresa. They are my great parents.
An interesting fact I found is that Maria Lorena Tiscareño de Molina y Ruiz was the descendant of Moctezuma II Xocoyotzin through Moctezuma's daugther Mariana Leonor de Moctezuma who married the "conquistador" Cristobal de Valderrama, born in Barcelona.
Todos somos primos

Very true! and I think this line that connects Moctezuma to de Ruiz de Esparza y Navarro is not disputed, as far as I know. Very true we all are primos in this area of Mexico!

Hola Jorge!

I am a descendant of these families too. The further back I go, the more out looks like everyone was marrying their cousins. I keep wondering if the information I see on Ancestry is wrong since Ancestry is notorious for bad information but it really appears there were a lot of people marrying their cousins in early colonial periods. Now, I found that even my husband's ancestors in Zacatecas are not only cousins marrying cousins but that he has a couple of lines that go back to Moctezuma & Leonor or Marina and I have three great grandparents that are all descendants of Moctezuma through these lines in Jalisco, Zacatecas, & Aguascalientes.

Another descendant of Romo and Ruiz De Esparza is Singer Vikki Carr. A great grandmother was born in “La Chona” (Encarnacion de Diaz) Jalisco Mexico. She is a distant cousin of mine through our descent from Baltazar Romo de Vivar. She descends from the Romo and Ruiz De Esparza repeatedly. Her great great grandparents were from Lagos de Moreno, San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalostotitlan, Tepatitlan, Encarnacion de Diaz, Teocaltiche, and Aguascalientes. She also has some ancestors from Zacatecas.

Gomez Martinez

Hello everyone! I’m very excited to be part of this group and am hoping for assistance in researching my family history.

I am searching for information about my grandfather, who lived and passed away in Los Angeles, California, in 1994. He lived under a different name in the United States, but I have some details about his family of origin in Mexico. His parents were Demetria Gomez and Celestino Martinez from Villa Obregón, Cañadas de Obregón, Mexico. I believe his birth name may have been Ventura Gomez Martinez, although this has not been officially confirmed. He also had a brother named Maximino Martinez. I knew Maximino and his family, but they are not aware of the earlier family history.

I have come across several family surnames in my research, including Martin, Martinez, Barajas, Gomez, and Reynosa. While I have found information on other members of the family, I have located only one record connected to Ventura Martinez.

I am hoping to connect with long-lost relatives or anyone who

Hello Christy,

You may also look for your dad’s records with the name Buenaventura Gomez.

The surname Martinez of your family was originally Martin del Campo.   Over the generations it was shortened to Martin.  It only recently was changed to Martinez.  Celestino was baptized Celestino Martin Barajas.   And his father’s surname is Martin.   His father is only given the Martinez surname in the death record of Celestino.

There are two Demetria with fathers of the same name but the mothers have different names.   The fathers are not the same person as they have different ancestries.
Your Demetria’s mother is named as Maria Genaro Gutierrez. This is your ancestral line   Cañadas is very close to Valle de Guadalupe

A Ventura Gomez shows up as a three year old in a census in Valle de Guadalupe     His parents are not named in the census which could  indicate that he was either  a visitor during the census, or being raised by friends or family in Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco.

Some of the records from people from el Salto are in , besides Cañadas, Valle de Guadlupe, Tepatitlan, or Jalostotitlan.

Your grandfather’s ancestry can be seen found at https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/pedigree/landscape/GR6V-QPX

There’s a lot to sort through, but I’m committed to understanding it fully.  You just helped fill in some missing pieces of my puzzle that I can now research further. If this is the person I'm looking for, he would be my beloved grandfather!!! He lived in the USA under a different identity. Different times I understand!

Hello, new member here! Looking for any info on Araujo and Oballe families in Griegos, Zacatecas

Hello everyone, my name is Alejandra Araujo. I have done a ton of research on most branches of my family history.

Hi Alejandra, Welcome to the Nuestrosranchos group. I have nosed around at a lot of familysearch records over the past 5 years or so, particularly Padrons and Dispensas. In the 1824 Ojocaliente (Zacatecas) padron (census), in the town of San Diego, there is a Narciso Gomes and Maria Candelaria Lopes listed in this padron, along with Rosalio Gomes, age 4 in 1824. Narciso is age 22 (born circa 1802), and Candelaria is age 25 (born circa 1799). Narciso Gomes is living in the household of Pedro Gomes (age 60), and Maria Yrinea Alvarado (age 55). Also living in this household is Alejo Gomes (age 13), and Maria Josefa Gomes (age 19), who are both likely siblings of Narciso. Alejo Gomes is later listed in a marriage record as Alejo Araujo, so I believe this is your family, and likely parents of your Narciso are Pedro Araujo (Gomes) and Maria Yrinea Alvarado.

The padron is located at:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9KJ-TZT7?i=333&cat=23…
Image 334 of 784.

Alejo Gomes is found later in a 23 April 1829 Ojocaliente (Zacatecas) informational marriage record as Alejo Aranjo, son of Pedro Aranjo and Yrinea Albarado. His birth year is listed 1811, which matches the Padron from 1824. This informational marriage record is located at.

Hi Lee, I'm getting back into researching genealogy and I would like to thank you very much for this information (hopefully not too late)! I was wondering if you had any insight as to why the last name changed from Gomes to Araujo seemingly out of nowhere? It seems like the family took on the name Araujo and Gomes kind of stopped being used. I also cannot seem to find any records with Pedro Gomes and Yrinea Alvarado in Zacatecas. I appreciate all the help. Thank you!

Comment

Alejandra,

Last names of Mexico families can change for a number of reasons.  One reason was simply is to distinguish from a common surname.  Perhaps there were many Gomes families in the area, and the Arajuo surname stood out, or vice-versa.   Sometimes a surname is changed to honor a mother's lineage. Sometimes a surname is changed because the surname has a more prominate (social and/or financial) status in the area.  If a family member was disgraced in some fashion, the surname could be changed to distance themselves from the disgraced family member.   The reasons vary, and normally can only be ascertained if these situations are in local public/notary records. Unfortunately, in most cases, one may never know the reason a surname was changed, unless verbally passed down from generation to generation.

Many Zacatecas area records can be difficult to find, with many older records lost, destroyed, or not available online to the public. Check the local area(s) to see if offline records exist. Often Census (Padrons) records can help, if available, and also depending on what year(s) are being looked at Civil records (births, marriages, deaths), as well as religious records (births, marriages, deaths, padrons, property, and wills) can help.  Marriage dispensations can also be valuable, if available. The children of the parents you are researching can also often provide information about older family members.

Lee

Father/Baptism of Manuel de Lizalde-m 19 Feb 1697 at Cuquio (lived Apozol)

One of our brick walls is Manuel de Lizalde. He is in my tree on Ancestry at https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/27355561/person/2049287080/facts The surname has many variant spellings: Lisalde, Lisarde, Lizarde, Elizalde (which is the actual original name in Basque) - with and without the "de".

The earliest record for him is his 19 Feb 1697 marriage at Cuquio, Jalisco, with Maria de Robalcava. It shows his mother are Cathalina de Carbaxal but does not show his father. The m,arriage record is at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18455-52689-9

While his records are at the church in Cuquio, they actually lived south of Yahualica at los Ranchos de Apozol. So, Cuquio was not where they actually lived and is well south of where they lived.

I went page by page through all the Cuquio baptisms from about 1680 back to about 1660, and he was not among those baptisms.

I am working my way back through the Nochistlan baptisms now but have not yet found him, although there is a

I can’t help you the Lizalde line, but there is something that seems off when you look at the marriages of their daughter Catarina.

Is listing Catarine de Lizarde as padres no conocidos in her second marriage an intentional or unintentional error?

Is there a dispensa in the second marriage between Catarina de Lizarde and Jose de Carbajal?

23 Jan 1718

Catarina de Lizarde hija legitima de Manuel de Lizarde y de Maria de Ruvalcaba.

Blas Riuz Nunez hijo legitimo de Diego Ruiz Nunez y de Ana Gonzalez.

13 Feb 1736

Catarina de Lizarde hija de padres no conocidos viuda de Blas Ruiz.

Jose de Carbajal hijo de padres no conocidos.

Comment

Don,

Thanks for commenting on the Lizarde/Lizalde family, and the marriage descrepancies.

I have not come across dispensas for either marriage that Catarina de Lizarde/Lizalde was involved with. I believe the 1736 marriage with Jose de Carabajal stated "diligencias" was necessary, but this could be marriage information, and not a dispensa. Regardless, I have not found dispensas or marriage information records for Catarina. With her 2nd marriage to Joseph de Carabajal, as a widow, parentage was not normally required to be stated. Perhaps listing her parentage was more of a clerical error, then an actual acknowlegment of lack of known parentage.

Here are a few possible reasons for one marriage being "more complete" then the other:

a. Often only one person, frequently the groom, provided the information for the marriage. If he did not know the names of his spouse’s parents, he may have stated they were unknown rather than admitting he did not know.

b. If the marriage was a second marriage for either party, the record might omit the parents' information to focus on the deceased spouse and the validity of the current marriage.

c. If a bride or groom did not appear in person, the information provided by a third party might be incomplete.

d. "Padres No Conocidos": This phrase was used to denote that the parents were not legally or socially acknowledged, regardless of whether the individual knew who they were.

e. If a person was born out of wedlock, the father was often not listed, or if the mother was unknown or absent, both were omitted.

f. Parish practices changed.  Often a longtime priest, who knew these families well accepted the marriage information provided "as is". If a new priest was assigned to the parish, or the marriage was in a different location, the priest may have required actual paperwork that may no longer have been available, and if could not be provided, listed parentage as unknown.

Wesley,

I have the same brick wall with regard to Manuel Lizalde, and also have found nothing naming his father. The Manuel Lizalde family ties back to my Zermeno family, hence my interest.

A Juan Lopez de Lizalde married Leonor Becerra y Sanchez de Mendoza on 25 Jan 1585 in Lagos de Moreno.

This family branch appears to be the same noted in a 1791 land record which discusses an even older 26 August 1602 land record in an area close to present day  "Las Animas" (Current day Yahaulica jurisdiction).

This Juan Lopez de Lizalde was noted as owning caballerias in the area, and was noted as a Calvary soldier. It is highly likely to be the same Juan Lopez de Lizalde that married in 1585.  Either way, the land record places the Lizalde family in Yahaulica very early on, and presents a good likelihood Manuel Lizalde descends in some manner through this family.

Hi Lee,

I'm unfamiliar with Manuel, but our family is descended from this same Juan Lópes de Lizalde and his wife, Leonor Becerra y Sánchez de Mendoza. Are there any credible sources that prove Juan's parentage?

So far, nothing I've found is provable, but I'm a beginner to colonial era genealogy.

For Miguel Lopez de Lizalde and wife Leonor Aberruza, little has been uncovered in typical online genealogy records that are available for searching/viewing via FamilySearch, Ancestry, ..etc.

Some older records (pre 1600) are only available in person at major historical/genealogical libraries, institutions, private collections (manuscripts).  Fortunately for those of us researching the Lopez de Elizalde families, the following works by some reputable genealogists/historians provide sufficient information to ascertain the lineage of the Lopez de Lizalde family who first appeared in the Lagos de Moreno (Jalisco), and Aguascalientes areas by the 1580's.

Three credible sources come to mind: Mariano Gonzalez-Leal, Jaime Holcombe, and Jose Luis Vasquez y Rodriguez de Frias.

1st Source -  The following from the book: (by Mariano Gonzalez-Leal) Retonos de Espana en La Nueva Galicia, Tomo (book) V. Vol. 2 Universidad de Guanajuato: 1983.  I have not obtained the book, but excerpts from the book are noted within some familysearch trees by other Lopez de Lizalde researchers. In Aguascalientes, Don Miguel Lopez de Elizalde provided info to the Mayor Francisco de Pareja y Rivera regarding his noble lineage.  The source is noted as a las Minas y Real de los Ramos document from 24 July 1620.   Pages 441-443 of the Retonos covers the elder Miguel Lopez de Elizalde (married to Leonor Aberruza) and son Juan Lopez de Elizalde family. The book is available for purchase at various book stores.

2nd Source - Jaime Holcombe, Mariano Gonzalez-Leal. The following from the website: Beyond Origins of NM families (website) based on a 1954 book "Origins of New Mexico Families, by Fray Angelico Chavez.  The following is noted with reference to Cristobal de Arellano:

-
Ancestry of Cristóbal de Arellano:
The ancestry of Cristóbal de Arellano (ONMF: 133), husband of Graciana Romero, was compiled by the prominent Mexican genealogist Jaime Holcombe. Holcombe located the baptismal record of Cristóbal de Arellano, baptized 3 May 1665, Aguascalientes, Nueva Galicia, son of Nicolás de Arellano and Leonor Fernández Becerra. Unexplainably, when Cristóbal sought to marry Graciana Romero (born circa 1680, daughter of Capitán Francisco Romero and doña Francisca Ramírez de Salazar), he named his mother as Leonor Ruiz de Esparza. In the diligencia record for this couple dated 1 August 1698, Santa Fe, Cristóbal gave his age as twenty-four and his birthplace as Aguascalientes. At the time, he was a soldier of the Santa Fe Presidio.
-
Jaime Holcombe was able to connect Leonor Fernández Becerra into the genealogical research of another prominent Mexican genealogist, Mariano González Leal, who had published the genealogy of Leonor's parents in a book entitled Retoños de España en la Nueva Galicia (Universidad de Guanajuato: 1983). The combination of the research of these two genealogists produces a genealogy that extends to the mid-1500s in Nueva Galicia.
-
Paternal lineage of Leonor Fernández Becerra:
1st generation: Martín Navarro married with Petronila de Moctezuma, their daughter,
-
2nd generation: María de Gabay married with Pedro Fernández de Vaulus, their son,
-
3rd generation: Juan Fernández de Vaulus married with Leonor Becerra, their daughter,
-
4th generation: Leonor Fernández Becerra, married/veiled 12 July 1664, Aguascalientes, Nueva Galicia, with Nicolás de Arellano, their son,
-
5th generation: Cristóbal de Arellano.
-
Maternal lineage of Leonor Fernández Becerra:
1st generation Toribio Hernández de Arellano married with doña Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza, their daughter,
-

5. Nicolas Lopez de Elizalde (Married to Regina de Alvarado)
6. Miguel Lopez de Elizalde
7. Agustin Lopez de Elizalde (married to Maria de Espinoza)
8. Ysabel Lopez de Elizalde (married to Francisco Diaz Ruiz)

Rough English Translation:
Juan Lopez de Elizalde y Aberruza, originally from Tolosa, Navarre, was the son of Miguel Lopez de Elizalde and Leonor de Aberruza; Leonor Becerra y Sanchez de Mendoza was the daughter of Juan Becerra and Ana Sanchez de Mendoza, the latter being the daughter of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano and Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza, daughter of Iñigo Lopez de Mendoza y Quiñones, Marquis of Mondejar, and Maria Laso de Mendoza, both with documented ancestry.

In the historical archive of Aguascalientes, there is a document that mentions Juan Lopez de Lizalde, son of Nicolas Lopez de Lizalde, grandson of Miguel Lopez de Lizalde, who received a land grant as one of the first settlers, and who sells to Nicolas Valli (son of Diego Ballin (son of Geronimo Ballin and Francisca de Herrera) and Francisca de Esparza, the latter being the daughter of Salvador de Esparza and Maria de Vielma), Aguascalientes Historical Archive, Box 40, Exp. 9, No. 44.

Likewise, in the protocols of Domingo Hernandez Cordero, the following document is found: Bill of Sale: "...I, Juan Lopez de Lizardi, resident and ordinary mayor of this town of Aguascalientes, declare that I sell to Pedro Fernandez de Valdez, resident... some houses that I own, in which I currently live, bordering some plots of land belonging to Nicolas Ramirez; I also sell him a ranch for small livestock (438 hectares), with the corresponding land and everything else annexed and belonging to it, about half a league from this town, which is called La Barranca, on the Cuisillo River. Where the river called Morsenique flows into it... all for 200 pesos... witnesses: Juan Bautista Conde, Mateo Mazias, and Juan de Alvarado, residents" (Jorge Palomino y Candeo, The Protocols of Rodrigo Hernandez Cordero 1585-1591, Banco Industrial de Jalisco, Guadalajara, Jalisco, 1972).

On January 25, 1585, Juan Lopez and Leonor Bezehra were married in Santa Maria de los Lagos. The following eight children of Juan Lopez de Elizalde y Aberruza and Leonor Becerra y Sanchez de Mendoza have been documented:

1. Juan Lopez de Elizalde (married 1st Maria Burgeno, 2nd Ana de Quesada)
2. Maria Lopez de Elizalde (married 1st Juan de Luevana, 2nd Martin Ruiz de Esparza)
3. Juana Lopez de Elizalde (married Jacinto Ruiz de Esparza)
4. Beatris Lopez (married to Luis de Alvarado)
5. Nicolas Lopez de Elizalde (married to Regina de Alvarado)
6. Miguel Lopez de Elizalde
7. Agustin Lopez de Elizalde (married to Maria de Espinoza)
8. Ysabel Lopez de Elizalde (married to Francisco Diaz Ruiz)

Saludos Erik,

From primary sources found on PARES, I had originally posted the following information, but I found another source that gives different information that you can see in the corrections on the bottom ancestral line.

original post:
1)- Payo Rodríguez de Sotelo (Aka Payo Rodríguez de Ribera) and Juana Herrera

2)- Payo Sotelo and Ysabel Ruiz

3)-Diego Sotelo “el Viejo” and Ynes Sedeño had many children. The two named in this document are:

3.1)-Luis Sotelo de Rivera
3,2)-Payo Sotelo Nar’uaez (Narváez)

and
1)- Payo Rodríguez de Sotelo (Aka Payo Rodríguez de Ribera) and Juana Herrera

2.)-Juan Sotelo. Who Is the father of

Payo Sotelo de Ribera, Tomas Sotelo de Ribera, and Eugenio Sotelo de Ribera

=====///////////////////////

New post
Corrections :  different wife for #1 (Francisca Soto), Payo senior and Francisca are grandparents of Juan Sotelo. Payo Sotelo (junior) who is married to Ysabel Ruiz are the parents of Juan Sotelo.

so what I gather from this is that Francisca Soto is a first wife, and that Juana Herrera is the last wife.  Here is a document testamento de Payo Rodriguez de Sotelo and Juana Herrera: Testamento de Payo Rodriguez Sotelo y Juana de Herrera.

This is what the Ejecutario de Villadolid dated 2/May/1587 presented by Juan Sotelo says:

1)- Payo Rodríguez de Sotelo (Aka Payo Rodríguez de Ribera) and Francisca Soto.

2)- Payo Sotelo and Ysabel Ruiz

3)- Juan Sotelo and Catalina de San Miguel

          3.1)- Payo Sotelo de Ribera,

3.2)- Tomas Sotelo de Ribera, and

          3.3)- Eugenio Sotelo de Ribera

So there are two primary sources naming different mothers for Payo Sotelo married to Ysabel Ruiz,  and Juan Sotelo is the brother of Diego Sotelo “el Viejo” that is married to Ynes Sedeño. The brothers Payo, Tomas , and Eugenio are repeatedly listed in this order so I am assuming that they are listed by age.

Hola Rick,

Thanks to you! It is very interesting what you mention. I think it is worth digging a bit more about that family. There is a clear and beautifully written letter in PARES that has their genealogy: "Carta de Fernando Arias de Yebra a Álvaro de Yebra, su tío, informándole de varias noticias sobre su ascendencia y la de Diego Arias de Yebra; y la respuesta de dicho Álvaro".

I send you what I have written about Isabel de Reinoso:

LUQUE,C.480,D.9-11]."

About the origin of the Sotelo...you left me thinking. I don't have information of the ancestors of Luis de Sotelo however there is someone that coincides with dates, place and last name with him. I don't know exactly how they are related but her last name could add a piece to the Sotelo puzzle:

Francisca Núñez de Sotelo, wife of the bachiller Pedro de Olivares -son of Gregorio Domínguez, knight of espuelas doradas, and Isabel Alonso.
They lived in Zamora and San Miguel de la Ribera. I think she must have been born circa 1450. (Sala de hijosdalgo. Caja 0200.0011)

Saludos Erik,

From a document that I read, the Sotelo surname came about because they came from the Villa de Sotelo. The document implies that before arriving at San Miguel de Ribera that the “Sotelo” were known by a different surname. I was wondering if they meant a name other than “Arias.” This change in surname was common in those times. While searching to see if I could find the other surname I came across some more Reynosos in San Miguel de Rivera.

Dear Erik,

I spoke too soon. It isn’t your Juana’s testament. It is the testament of of Juana Herrera who is the wife of the first, or one of the first, Sotelos in San Miguel de Rivera. It seems that they most likely picked up their surname when Payo Rodríguez de Sotelo moved from Sotelo to San Miguel de Rivera. Payo Rodríguez de Sotelo, and later aka Payo Rodríguez de Toledo was from the Villa de Sotelo, Ciudad de Toledo.

I believe that Payo Rodríguez Sotelo is an ancestor to Diego Arais de Sotelo as he seems to be the patriarch of the Sotelos from San Miguel de Ribera..

Pedro Arias de Dávila married Isabel Bobadilla (daughter of Francisco Fernández de Bobadilla and Maria Peñalosa).

It is clear from a letter from Capitan Antonio Sotelo de San Miguel de Ribera to his son, our Diego Arias de Sotelo, that Pedro Arias is somehow related to Diego.

Form a document found concerning some family members I found a family member with the surname Alonso Bobadilla.

I won’t post the information here as I want to keeep up the suspense for your book. And I may be wrong, and this is another branch of the Sotelo family. The document that I found doesn’t mention Antonio, but with what I already know about the family, plus what the information you provided, I believe that I have filled in a couple of blanks. I will download all of the document pages and send them to you later this week.

Dear Rick, Denise and Jorge:

Thank you so much for your kind support and messages. I will post the link to the book in here if the admins are okay with it. It will be released on Amazon.

Regarding the genealogy, summing up the Sotelo side it is like this:

1.- Luis de Sotelo = Isabel de N. They resided in Zamora and Sanzoles where they had a main house and hacienda. (Casa principal)

1.1.- Diego de Sotelo. He owned two houses close to the church of St. Lucía in Zamora.
He was present with the rest of the hidalgos in the reunions they made in the church of Santa María la Nueva. When he was young and when the king of Portugal sent his army to Toro and Zamora, he was seen riding his horse, holding his lance and shouting "Castilla, Castilla!"
Diego had two wives:

= Juana (first wife).

1.1.1.- Captain Antonio de Sotelo, resident of Zamora and a "hidalgo principal" in San Miguel de Ribera = Uzenda Núñez Vela.

.
1.1.1.3.- Baltasar de Sotelo.
...

1.1.2.- Bachiller Luis de Sotelo, resident of Zamora, "alcalde mayor" of the count de Alba de Aliste.
1.1.3.- Captain Andrés de Sotelo = Guiomar de Herrezuelo. He served as Alcalde de la Santa Hermandad and in the capitanía of Alonso de Ulloa.

= Not named (second wife)

With this wife he had four children that are not named.

------------------------------------------------------------

1.2.- Hernando de Sotelo.

1.3.- Lope de Sotelo = Esperanza Rodríguez de Ribera. (Info provided by Rick)

1.3.1.- Pedro de Sotelo = Inés de Cisneros.

1.3.1.1.- Antonio de Sotelo y Cisneros, conquistador.
1.3.1.2.- Gregorio de Sotelo y Cisneros = Antonia Romero de Mella* (b. ca. 1523).

1.3.1.2.1.- Pedro de Sotelo Romero de Mella, knight of the Order of St. John.
1.3.1.2.2.- Antonio de Sotelo Romero de Mella.

1.3.1.3.- Pablo Cisneros de Sotelo = Marina de Saavedra.
1.3.1.4.- Bernardo de Sotelo.
1.3.1.5.- Isabel de Sotelo.

* Important: in my book of the Reynoso I included the chapter of the Romero de Reinoso family of Zamora and to me it seems likely that Antonia Romero de Mella belongs to the lineage of Bernardo Romero de Reinoso and his wife María de Mella. Bernardo was the son of Pedro Romero, lord of Formariz (Zamora), and his wife Beatriz de Reinoso.

If Antonia, wife of Gregorio de Sotelo, was daughter of Bernardo and María, then she was the sister also of the captain Francisco de Reinoso y Mella, knight of the order of St. John and one of the 40 Castilians that fought and survived during the Great Siege of Malta (1565)

Great work, Erik! You mentioned some documents from the Real Chancilleria de Valladolid - would one of them be the pleito de Guiomar de Herrezuelo, viuda de Andrés de Sotelo? I found this document a while back, it’s regarding her attempts to maintain the status of “hijodalgo” enjoyed by her husband, and she establishes his genealogy. It corresponds with what you’ve said (and gives the surnames of both Luis de Sotelo’s wife, and that of Juana, the wife of Diego de Sotelo el viejo). Do you already have this document? If not, and if you’d like it, please contact me through this website, and I can get it to you.

Dear Manny,

Thank you for your kind offer and for your generosity, I do know it. Yes, you are right. That document is indeed one of those that provide us with the evidence to reconstruct the Sotelo lineage.

I arrived to it by mere chance. I wasn't looking for information about the Sotelo back then, I was researching the Herrezuelo from Castile. I found that their presence in Autillo de Campos can be dated as far as 1343 when the apparent head of the lineage -Juan Alfón Ferrezuelo, son of Rodrigo Alfón- was recognized as hidalgo by the residents of Autillo.

Serendipity is a blessing, isn't it?

I wrote about the Herrezuelo here:

https://autillodecampos.blogspot.com/2020/07/el-linaje-de-los-herrezuel…

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to connect Guiomar to this family yet.

Estimado Erik,

What a week! This same week that you post Diego Aria de Sotelo’s, I found out that I descend from Pedro Arais Dávila. In a letter from Diego’s father to his son, Pedro Arias de Avila was mentioned. Ever since I learned of this letter I unsuccessfully searched for the Sotelo Cisnero family connection. Now that we now that his paternal grandfather has a different ancestry, it is possible that we may finally find the family connection to Pedro Arias D’Avila.

A couple of years ago a group of us mentioned in a thread that we had doubt regarding Antonio’s ancestry so it is great that you finally found proof of his true ancestry.

Here is the location of the thread where we discussed his ancestry, his connection to Pedro Arias D’Avila, and the Arias Sotelo Cisneros family:

Thanks again Erik for sharing your research,

Dear Rick,

Thanks to you for your kind words. I plan to release this shortly in a very small book hoping that this information will be useful to seasoned genealogists such as yourself.
I omitted deliberately the last name of Isabel -wife of Luis de Sotelo- because I know it will surprise you the same way it surprised me. The reason why I haven't disclosed the last name of Isabel yet is because I need to find the connection to the rest of the main branches of that Castilian family (Without telling you directly I know you have already realized the last name I refer to).
I have a good lead because she and her husband Luis had a "...casa buena, principal y hacienda..." in the area of Zamora and Sanzoles during the XV century and they are related to the Romero who also owned lands in Sanzoles.

Saludos Erik,

Possible clues as to parents of Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza

I would like to clarify my statement.   Isabel de Mendoza was born in what is now Mexico, but she wasn’t full blooded native.   Her  father is identified as Diego Hurtado de Mendoza from a document not in my possession. What I know about this Diego is his parents and siblings, was single when he came over, who he came over with, and who he worked for. The clues that I still need to follow come from his employer. I am seeking out records that may reveal a little more about his time in Mexico. I do know how he is closely related to other Mendoza’s that came over, both in Mexico and South America.  I have not seen the document that states that Diego Hurtado de Mendoza is her father, and that is why I searched everywhere for her ancestry.   What I have put together is Diego Hurtado de Mendoza’s ancestry.  I would like to read this document to see if I can find more information.

I also put together an ancestry of Isabel De Mendoza Velasco who also fits the timetable for our Isabel Mendoza.  This Isabel Mendoza Velasco is mistakenly listed in genealogical tables as becoming a nun when her aunt with the same name is the one who became a nun. But this Isabel de Mendoza Velasco does not have native Indian ancestry so this makes her unlikely to be the Isabel Mendoza married to Toribio Hernandez de Arellano.

More research still needs to be done before I publish my findings on this family.

Diego Hurtado de Mendoza is related to many of the other Conquistadors.

There is no mention of the name of Isabel Mendoza de Hurtado’s mother.  I believe that she may have been a native.   Her father is mentioned coming over from Spain and his duties, but there is no mention of a wife.

Those Diego lived and died earlier than when we know Isabel was born. This Diego Hurtado and Maria Lerma child is marrying in 1570. This places This Couple as a possibility. This Isabel had children in the mid to late 1550's and 1560's. Mr. Navarro claimed that she descended from this father you mentioned but through a daughter of his. I believe that the problem was that this daughter lived at at an earlier time period and that an extra generation was needed.

But the geni ones seem to make a lot of mistakes or just make up stuff because Wikipedia say that Inigo Lopez de Mendoza y Quinonez son Diego Hurtado de Mendoza is a poet and it says he wen to England and Italy but doesn't look like he was ever in Mexico. It says he was banished from court in 1568 but says he spent the rest of his life in Granada Spain so that doesn't seem like the right Diego Hurtado de Mendoza.

Who is Teresa Salazar (cc Antonio Beloso de Sotomayor)?

At this point, our family is descended from almost every child of Simon Báez (c1630-1659) and Maria de la Cerda (c1633-aft1690).

Our most recently discovered Báez ancestor is Ignacio Báez de la Cerna:

1st generation - Ignacio Báez de la Cerna (c1658-????) cc Juana Gutiérrez de Mendoza (c1661-????)

2nd generation - and then Ignacio and Juana's son, Francisco Báez (c1680-1702) cc  24 Aug 1701 to Catalina/Catharina de Salazer alias Beloso/Veloso, daughter of Antonio Beloso de Sotomayor and Teresa de Salazar, all Espanoles.

But who is Teresa de Salazar?

Origin of Francisco Magdaleno/Madaleno cc Elvira de Mendoza?

Happy New Year To All!,

Did we ever get to the bottom of the origin of Francisco Magdaleno/Madaleno cc Elvira de Mendoza? If not, I may have found another clue in the recently released treasure trove of the Morelia archives:

Petricion de Gonzalo Fernandez de Abrego para recibir herencia de su madre - Beatriz de Talavera. (Morelia - 1602)

In this petition we find out that Gonzalo is the son of Andres Fernandez de Abrego cc Beatriz de Talavera. Furthermore, we have testimony from a couple of interesting witnesses: Francisco Magdaleno, who declares that he's the uncle of Gonzalo. This given that Gonzalo is the son of his sister Beatriz de Talavera!. Furthermore, we have another testimony from Geronimo Magdaleno de Mendoza who testifies that he's a "primo hermano" to Gonzalo. This would be the same Geronimo who was the son of Francisco cc Elvira de Mendoza.

I think this is a very interesting clue into the origins of the Magdalenos/Madalenos of Michoacan and Jalisco. In looking for more clues

After doing some more searching, I found the Header and Footer of the last will and testament of Franciso Madaleno!

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKV-DSM1-9?view=fullText&keywords=Madaleno&lang=en&groupId=M9Z2-XDQ

The crazy thing is that it contains the parents of Francisco! I read their names as Gonzalo Fernandez Madaleno and Maria (I think "Gutierrez or Fernandez" in abbreviated form?), "difuntos vecinos que fueron de la Ciudad de Mexico..." As a bonus it also contains confirmation that Diego Madaleno was his brother. With this we now know Francisco's parents as well as two siblings, Diego Madaleno and Beatriz de Talavera!

Enhorabuena, estimado Daniel!

Question and translation needed for marriage record of Cristóbal de Santoyo alias Pérez, "mestiso soltero i criollo?"

Hello and Happy New Year!

I have a question: when someone is called "criollo" in colonial records it usually implies they are born in Mexico from two Spanish parents, correct?

Is this a hard rule? Why would someone be called both mestizo and criollo in the same record? Because he is the son of one parent who was born in Spain, perhaps?

Cristóbal de Santoyo alias Pérez, "mestiso soltero i criollo," probable, but unproven, son of Juan de Santoyo alias Pérez (possibly Spanish) and Antonia de Villegas alias Mendoza (noted as mestiza in multiple sources), both of Lagos. Cristóbal de Santoyo alias Pérez married June 1, 1668 to Ana Burgeño, daughter of Ysidro de Araujo and Beatris Burgeño alias López, in Santa Maria de los Lagos.

My Spanish isn't proficient enough to understand the entire record - especially the notation in the margin. Would someone please look at it and translate or explain the record for me. This could be a game-changer for

I have only seen the term 'criollo' used to mean place of birth or origin and not used to signify caste. Of the records that include the term 'criollo' for a person it will also include the person's caste (español, mestizo, indio, mulato.

"...mestiso soltero i criollo de esta villa..."

In this instance, as well as in the other records on the same page, the writer used the word criollo to mean originario (autóctono o nativo de esta villa de Lagos), and not in the usual sense related to the castas colonial that one typically sees in these records.

Thank you very much for the explanation. I'm a novice to colonial genealogy, and the learning curve is steep. Very appreciative of the assist.

Website Revival Update 2021-2031 Covered!!!

A few years back the website was a crossroads and the future looked dim. The site was down and Rosalinda Ruiz took the bull by the horns and organized the Nuestros Ranchos WorkGroup (Many thanks Rosalinda). Via that group a small group of individuals formed the Tech Group: Lee, Rosalinda, Wesley, Arturo and I but above and beyond the Tech Group was spearheaded by our Elite Webmaster Lee Ingram (Muchisimas!!!). Anyway as a result of the larger Workgroup a fund raising effort was started and with the help of 26 members a total of $776.24 was collected. Since 2021 when the site was revived Lee Ingram has been working tirelessly to get the site up and keep it up to date. During that time Lee had certain expenses with the work and just recently I was able to reimburse him for out of pocket monies spent and to pay forward for the webhosting and domain registration (Lee could explain it better). Anyway this email is to say that the approximate $800 was well spent for the past 4 years as well

On the possible origins of Isabel de Mendoza, wife of Toribio Hernández de Arellano

Following the hypothesis that Isabel de Mendoza, wife of Toribio Hernández de Arellano, was a native (chichimeca?), I would like to leave this note for the benefit of future research.

The proposition of a native origin for Isabel de Mendoza is not new, it predates the publication of Retoños de España en la Nueva Galicia. This possibility was suggested by Mariano González-Leal during a private dinner at his house, years before Retoños was published. It is crucial to emphasize that this remains a speculative theory and no proof has been found. It is based on the following:

  1. Strategic. A marital alliance between a spaniard like the mayor Toribio Hernández de Arellano and an indigenous woman, particularly one of cacique lineage, would have been a strategic asset in the region of Santa María de los Lagos. This area was situated on a volatile frontier (frontera de chichimecas), and such unions could have been a method of securing alliances with indios amigos or indios de paz, thereby

Hello Eric,

I too have wondered about the document that people have said exists that identifies Diego Hurtado de Mendoza as a relative of the Viceroy and father of Isabel Mendoza. This Diego Hurtado de Mendoza came over as criado of the Bishop. He was single when he came over, and the question remains on whether he traveled back and forth from Spain, or if he just stayed in Mexico after his first trip.  I believe he made more than one trip as the date of birth of Isabel is given by most genealogists as mid to late 1530’s.  If he really is her father then he would have had to come to Mexico earlier than his trip to Mexico in the early 1550’s. Because this Diego is connected to the viceroy, I believe that he worked first for him and that is why he most likely made more than one trip between Spain and Mexico. If he traveled  back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean as representative of the Viceroy and the Bishop, then that could possibly explain why there is not much written about his life in Mexico.

And this Diego Hurtado de Mendoza is a cousin of the Ruy Diaz de Mendoza that is an ancestor of many people in New Mexico. Another cousin traveled to South America and left many descendants there. While working on both separate projects on identifying their ancestry the projects converged, with me first discovering Ruy’s true parents and grandparents, and then discovering that Diego Hurtado de Mendoza is in that close family tree.

The actual details of their ancestry will take pages.   Please let me know if you can get access to that document, as I have asked for that specific document for over two decades, but no one has given details on where to find it.

The evidence that I have is only for Diego Hurtado de Mendoza’s ancestry, the Diego that was a criado of the bishop.   I don’t have the document that states that he is Isabel’s father so I can’t study it to find out what it actually says.  So until we can get a hold of that document we are left wondering.

Merry Christmas,

Rick A. Ricci

I would like to clarify my statement.   Isabel de Mendoza was born in what is now Mexico, but she wasn’t full blooded native.  The Diego Hurtado de Mendoza that was identified as her father came over from Spain.   Diego was single when he came over and little is known about him except who he came over with and who he worked for.  I don’t have proof that he was her father, but he is the Diego Hurtado de Mendoza that a document said was her father. The clues that I still need to follow come from his employer. I am seeking out records that may reveal a little more about his time in Mexico. I do know Diego’s ancestry and he is closely related to other Mendoza’s that came over, both in Mexico and South America. It is clear that Isabel’s mother was native or a mestiza.  I do not know the identity of Isabel’s mother.

Thank you, Tristán and Rick, for your comments.

I hope we, or someone in the future, will eventually find documentation to prove those hypotheses. I hope Rick Rodriguez, if he is part of this group, can share more about his interesting finding.

I also have a question, Rick. What document proves that Diego Hurtado de Mendoza is the father of Isabel? And if he did have a daughter named Isabel, how does that connect her specifically to Santa María de los Lagos and to Toribio Hernández de Arellano? This would help clarify that the Isabel in question is not someone else with the same name.

Best regards,

Erik.

Sometime ago I read your findings on Diego Delgado, his wife and family in law. At the time I didn`t realize that Juan Diaz, his father in law happened to be one of the founders of Celaya on January 1st, 1571 (There are no other mentions to a Juan Diaz in the area until at least 1611, and this one was married to a certain Agustina Rodriguez, mestiza and he himself apparently a mestizo, and they both lived in the village of San Miguel in 1614). He and the other founders were granted land at the beginning of 1574 and they made the commitment to keep them for, at least, ten years, but by 1582 he had sold his. This might have happened probably because he was a master shoemaker and not a labrador, and it can also be the reason why he moved to San Luis Potosí.

The founder of Celaya were 30, and they had to be, and actually were, heads of family, i.e. at least married, and in most cases had children. This means that it was highly probable that they were all above 20 years of age. That would most probably made him born on or before 1550, and that's why I doubt some of the facts ttributed to him by RMB, because by the dates he's mentioned by RMB the whole of Celaya's founders on whom there is information were dead (El 6 de febrero de 1618 ante la fe de Juan de Trujillo, escribano real, junto con Pedro Vallejo, maestro zapatero fungió como testigo en la escritura pública de compra-venta de un esclavo negro que vendió Francisco Rodríguez Serrano, maestro de zapatero a Gerónimo de León, panadero. He could't be the son of Jerónimo Díaz and nephew of Francisco Román.I'm sure that RMB confiused Diwego Delgado's father in law with another Juan Diaz, which happens to be a very common name.

Juan Díaz appears as a cofrade in the "Testimonio de las constituciones de la archicofradía del Santísimo Sacramento, fundada en la iglesia parrochial del señor San Francisco de esta ciudad de Celaya el año de 1574", kept at the Archives of the Franciscan Province of Michoacan.  In the same archives apperas the following: "Mencía Meléndez, viuda de Bartolomé de Losa, dice, en una cláusula de su testamento, que pasó ante Pedro Téllez de Fonseca a los 30 de enero de 1582, que dicho su marido dejó, por su fin y muerte, cinco caballerías de tierra, las dos y media que compró de Juan Díaz y las otras dos y media que le fueron dadas por su vecindad, con cuatro días de agua, con mas caballería y media de tierra que se compró de Miguel Sánchez y se metió en la dicha hacienda." as well as "… es linde con tierras de Gonzalo Díaz e con tierras de su madre del dicho Pedro Meléndez, que la dicha media caballería de tierras es dentro de las tierras de Alejos de Losa, hermano del dicho Pedro Meléndez, y siendo dentro de las tierras del dicho Alejos de Losa, prestando consentimiento para ello, están sin perjuicio y se le puede hacer la merced que pide por estar la dicha merced a otro de esta villa, que es a Juan Díaz, de quien la recibió y compró Bartolomé de Losa, padre del dicho Pedro Meléndez, ..."

I would very much appreciatte if you could tell the me links to Francisca Gallegos testament.

Hola Héctor,

Very interesting and very plausible, that Juan Diaz was among the founders of Celaya. Great lead! From the approximate birth years of his children, he could easily have been born before 1550. And I agree with you about RMB’s assessment, and that he was speaking of another person with the same name, likely Juan Diaz de Silva, who was a maestro zapatero.

According to Fray Cristobal Cabrera’s testimony in his criminal case (Oct 1626), Juan Diaz was living in Sierra de Pinos around 1610, with his daughter and her husband, and that he was very old and extremely poor, for which reason he visited the convent where Fray Cristobal was guardian for meals: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSDY-QCXR?cat=31792

Here is a carta de venta, dated 29 Aug 1617, Juan Diaz, resident of San Luis Potosi, sells partes de dos minas que tiene en Sierra de Pinos to Pedro de Castañeda. I can’t say with complete certainty that this is our Juan Diaz, but he mentions that the mines were originally registered in his name by Diego Delgado: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSC6-3J4W?cat=3751635

On 25 Sep 1617, Juan Diaz otorga su poder a Diego Delgado y a Juan Fonseca. I’m unable to decipher the document, but it appears to be regarding Pedro de Castañeda and Alonso de Rojas and a carta de venta - probably the above document. Again, I can’t be certain that this is our Juan Diaz, but Diego Delgado and Juan Fonseca were the yernos of our Juan Diaz. The only thing is, this Juan Diaz signed his name, whereas the one from 29 Aug didn’t - dijo que no sabe escribir: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSC6-3Y3R?cat=3751635

Hola, Manny,

Congratulations on your research. It is truly impressive. I'm very grateful to you because the information that you provide has helped me get a more precise idea on another of Celaya's founders.

As I believe I mentioned before, all of Celaya's founders on whom I have been able to gather information other than their names and land grants were dead by 1600. Although it's not impossible that the Juan Diaz that you have found coul've been one of the founders, there is a chance that he might have been his son. By January 1st, 1571, they were all heads of a family and, if I'm correct, they all had to be of at least 25 years of age, or have been emancipated by their fathers.

Another of the founders was Juan Gallego, who seems to have had a son, Hernan Gallego or Gallegos, married to a Mexican indian and living in Apaseo at the beginning of the XVII century. Little more is known about him. But considering that many of the founders participed in the foundation of the village together with their father, a brother, a father in law, etc., it wouldn't be impossible that Maria Gallegos, the wife of our Juan Diaz, could've been related to Juan Gallego. Nothing conclusive though.

That's all I can cobntribute to Juan Diaz by know. Let us hope to get lucky and find more clues.

I am sorry I cannot answer your question, but I do want to give you information (In case you don't have it) about one of your Delgado ancestors.

I came across this while researching my own Delgado line from Tlaltenango and Atolinga, Zacatecas.

Juan Delgado is in the following book "Spain's Patriots of Northwestern New Spain" the link follows:

http://www.somosprimos.com/hough/nwus.pdf

He is listed among the Spanish Patriots who fought against England during the American Revolution. He is listed alphabetically on page 48 on the pdf document. He was son of Bartolome Delgado, who was son of Francisco Delgado, who was son of Diego Delgado as you previously posted.

Hello Ruben,

Thank you for sharing that. I was approached by a member of the DAR in regards to that historic link; as it turns out, Juan Joseph Delgado was actually the grandson of my g7's Bartolome Delgado and Francisca Josefa Echevarria y Merquelin, and son of Juan Manuel Delgado and Matiana Contreras. So, he was my 1st-cousin 7 times removed (so my sisters don't qualify for the DAR).

It's great to have a link between our zacatenos and the American Revolution!

Do you descend from this same family?

Juan Joseph Delgado (2nd Cousin 6x)although he is related from his mother Mateana Contreras Rodriguez as well, I had the informational PDF when I first started last year but I forgot I had it. I was able to add his family to my ancestry account and only merged his 1st and second wife Juana diaz Trevino montemayor etc that were listed on the PDF. Here is his ID(L44C-41J) on Familysearch.org. Happy Holidays to all!!

Hola primos y primas,

I was going through notary records in San Luis Potosi, and I found Diego Delgado, miner from "El Descubrimiento de Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion de Sierra de Pinos," registering some mines in Pinos. From the timeline, I'd say this is Diego Delgado, who was married to Juana Diaz:

24 Jan 1603, Registro de Minas
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G58X-S7NS?mode=g&i=163&wc=…

11 Mar 1604, Registro de Minas
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G58X-S7JN?mode=g&i=113&wc=…

His name also appears in other mine claims on the same roll, in reference to other mines registered in Pinos.

Manny,

This is good information. Its really nice to find out how our ancestors made their money. Do you know what kind of mine it was like gold or silver? Also you say they lived on Pendencia, is that a place or does that mean something? also when someone is registering a mine does that mean they own the mine? i recently connected to this family through my ancestor Rafaela Delgado

Hi Danny,

San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas were known for their silver mines, though there was some gold, mercury and other metals. These would be "mine claims," as we call them in English, and yes, the registrants owned the mines, unless they were registering them in someone else's name.

Pendencia is a hacienda, north of the town of Pinos; these days, it's a "mezcalero" hacienda, where they grow cactus and distill their own tequila.

Hola Primos,

I think I’ve found the two documents that can establish that Diego Delgado, who married Isabel de Islas Martinez Lozano, was the son of Diego Delgado and Juana Diaz.

This is the IM for Nicolas Gomez, Mulato Esclavo de Diego Delgado, of the Pendencia, for his marriage to Juana Maria India, 11 Sep 1647, in San Matias, Pinos.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-B7RG-6?i=45&wc=3PS9-W38

Appearing as testigos, are brothers, Juan Delgado (35y) and Diego Delgado “El Moso” (25y), españoles, vecinos de la Pendencia. According to Juan’s declaration, Nicolas was born in the home of his brother, Diego Delgado, who is Nicolas’s master. Diego Delgado El Moso says he’s known Nicolas for 18 years, and that he was born in the home of his father, Diego Delgado (“El Viejo”).

From the timeline, approximate ages and location, we can surmise that Diego Delgado “El Viejo” is the same who married Juana Diaz, and Juan Delgado is their son, b. 9 May 1604, married to Maria de Vargas and to Juana de Rivera. This IM establishes that they also had a son named Diego Delgado, who was born around the same time as the one who married Isabel de Islas Martinez Lozano. They’re the same person.

To support this, is the IM of Diego Guzman and Maria de Islas, daughter of Diego Delgado and Isabel de Islas, on which Juan Delgado was a testigo, and on which he declares that he is the legitimate brother of the bride’s father (Diego Delgado).

Their signatures on both documents match (though they’ve abbreviated “Diego” and “Juan”).

IM for Diego Guzman and Maria de Islas, 16 Nov 1662, San Matias Pinos:

I wanted to make a correction, regarding this entry, since it's not a mine claim, but the registration of a lot in Pinos, with an ore mill & smelter, quarters for Indians, and a main house. It had a water hole and was next to the lot of Pedro Narbais [de Carvajal]:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G58X-S7NS?mode=g&i=163&wc=…

The only baptism record I have for their children is for Juan, b. 9 May 1604, Sagrario, SLP. He's likely the oldest, so Diego Delgado and Juana Diaz might have been married the previous Jun 1603, and in SLP.

Hola prim@s,

I thought I’d do some catch-up on the Delgado’s of the Pendencia. It’s been more than 6 years since I started this thread, and I’ve accumulated some information about this family since.

First of all, I can confirm that Diego Delgado “el Mozo” and Juan Delgado were the sons of Diego Delgado and Juana Diaz. On 13 Mar 1656, Diego Delgado, resident of La Pendencia in the jurisdiction of Sierra de Pinos, born in the City of Celaya, the legitimate son of Diego Delgado and Juana Diaz, gave power of attorney to doña Isabel Martinez Lozano his wife, and to Juan Delgado his brother, and to Juan Martin Chavez, miner and resident of La Pendencia, so that they could write his testamento, as he was very sick and unable to do so. He named as his legitimate children and heirs:
- Juan Delgado age 16 (b. 10 Sep 1639, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.)
- Baltasar Delgado age 14, (b. 2 Jan 1641, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.)
- Francisco Delgado age 8 (b. 23 Apr 1647, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.)
- Maria de Isla age 12 (b. 7 Jan 1644, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.)
He also said that, before he married, he had an hijo natural named Diego Delgado, born to an unmarried woman.

Diego Delgado evidently didn’t die at this time, since later that same year, on 17 Nov 1756, he donated a slave named Luis, age 20, to his brother, Joseph Delgado; on 16 Nov 1662, he arranged the marriage of his daughter, Maria de Isla, to Diego Guzman; on 12 Sep 1663, he was still alive, when his son-in-law, Diego Guzman, sold a slave on his behalf.

By 22 Oct 1665, Diego Delgado was already deceased, when Isabel Martinez Lozano gave power of attorney to her son, Juan Delgado, to adjust the accounts of a hacienda of which Diego Delgado was the administrator, and which belonged to the heirs of Francisco Cardona and Miguel Cardona.

Isabel de Islas Martin Lozano died and was buried on 16 Jul 1676, in Real de Charcas, SLP.

DIEGO DELGADO cc JUANA DIAZ

I still don’t have a fix on the elder Diego Delgado’s origins. I do know that he was living in San Luis Potosi as early as 24 Sep 1600, when he was a witness present for a business transaction. Other key dates during the period:

On 28 Feb 1601, when recognizing that he owed Antonio de Espinosa 264 pesos, Diego Delgado’s occupation is given as “sastre,” or “tailor.”
On 30 Mar 1602, Pedro Mateos, resident of San Luis Potosi, donated one half of all of his mines and shares of mines to Diego Delgado, “to whom he was in great debt, for the many great works that he has done.”

On the other hand, I’ve had more luck with Juana Diaz’s origins. I recently had a big break-through, and it came tucked away in the pages of an Inquisition document. In 1626, Padre Fray Cristobal Cabrera, who had served as guardian of the Convento de San Francisco in Sierra de Pinos during the early 1610’s, was accused of soliciting sex from female parishioners during his sojourn. Among his accusers was a woman named Francisca de Gallegos (b. 1591), the wife of Juan de Fonseca. In September 1627, she was absent from town and unable to give a statement, so added to what appears to be a list of possible witnesses were “Juan Fonseca, husband of Francisca de Gallegos, her sister, Juana Diaz, her brother-in-law, Diego Delgado, and her nephew, Diego Delgado … who live on La Pendencia next to Pinos.”
I couldn’t believe my luck! I quickly referred to the indexes of the early San Matias parish archives, but neither Francisca Gallegos’ nor her husband’s names appear. On a whim, I checked RMB’s “Diccionario,” and as luck would have it, he has an entry for Francisca Gallegos, in which he names her as the daughter of Juan Diaz, maestro zapatero, and of doña Maria de Gallegos. Bingo. They would be the parents of Juana Diaz, the wife of Diego Delgado.

I don’t have any more information about Juan Diaz and doña Maria de Gallegos at this time. But one thing that’s been bugging me is, in the 17 Nov 1653 testamento of their daughter, Francisca de Gallegos, in the introduction, she says, “En el nombre de Dios todo Poderosso amen Se Panquantos esta carta Vieren como yo franca gallegos vezina deste Pueblo de San luis potosi viuda de Juo de fonseca difunto natural de la Villa de Selaya hija Lexitima de Maria gallegos y de Juan Diaz mis padres ya difuntos.”

In his entry for Francisca Gallegos, RMB says that it is her husband who was “natural de la Villa de Celaya”; I am going to assume that this is from where he got that information. But when I read this, when she says “natural de la Villa de Celaya,” she’s referring to herself, and not to him: this is all about her. This makes a big difference, because, Juan Diaz and Maria de Gallegos had to be living somewhere else before arriving in SLP, which was founded in 1592. This would also explain why Diego Delgado “el Mozo” was born in Celaya: at least one of his parents’ families had a presence there.

The children of Diego Delgado and Juana Diaz are:
- Juan Delgado, b. 09 May 1604, Sagrario, San Luis Potosi; m1. Juana de Rivera, m2. Maria de Vargas Cardona.
- Diego Delgado, m. Isabel de Islas Martinez Lozano.
- Joseph Delgado, b. 30 May 1613, San Matias, Pinos, Zacatecas; m. Francisca Tiscareño y Gabay
- Hernando Delgado, c. 06 Jun 1621, San Matias, Pinos, Zacatecas.

Saludos!

Thank you Manny for this very valuable info.

It's been a while seen I've been able to add new ancestors to my tree, keeps getting harder.

I descend from Diego Delgado & Juana Díaz through their son Joseph Delgado > Luis Delgado Tiscareño > Teresa Delgado > Andrea Maldonado > José Tomás Fernández de Palos, etc. This line survives in Coahuila, in the area of Monclova.

Good morning,

I figured as a new recent member I could pose my first question (many more to follow haha) and be hopeful that someone can shed some light on a roadblock.

Can you cite a primary source?   A few years ago a genealogist that lived in Colorado did much research on this line, and she could not find any primary sources.

I have seen that many people take it as a given, but I still would like to see a primary source.

Hello Rick

I understand your skepticism. My friend looked into my genealogy, and got back to me a few days later saying I was related to Manuel the 1st saying he needs to take a knee and kiss the ring next time he see's me stuff like that.  I thought he was pulling my leg and decided to look into it and prove him wrong.

The more I looked into it the more it made sense. King Manuals 1 son  Luís Duke of Beja of Portugal never married Violante Gomez or at least there is no record of it. She was labelled a Converso from Jewish to Christianity after the Christian Reconquista  of Spain. as a result their children were considered illegitimate. The church was reluctant to marry a Converso or baptize a converso child. The name "Gomez de Portugal". comes from Violante Gomez, and the de Portugal part comes from Luis Duke of Beja of Portugal.

This is link to one of the sources I found.

I have never seen the evidence as to who his father is.   Though I did see that he descended from a Jewish woman.  The thing is that when I see the posts that say his father was the king they list someone that wasn’t his mother.

After reading your post I could not see a link to my paternal Munoz line.

One name that I noticed was Ana Josefa Gómez de Portugal.

One of the founders of Lagos De Moreno was man named Juan Gomes de Portugal or Capitan Juan Gomes de Portugal. He was married to Cathalina LOPEZ de la MAdrid de la Cuadra y de NAVA Lopez.

They got married about 1558 at Spain.

Juan was the illegitimate grandson of Manuel1st king of Portugal. Juan had up to 17 children.

When I see the name ending with Gomez de Portugal in the Lagos de Moreno area I assume there is a link to Capitan Juan and his link to royalty.

Good luck on your hunt!

Revisiting Diego Reynoso y Renteria and Juana Lozano

Greetings,

A recent forum topic (separate thread) that was sorting out the various Christoval Lozano's prompted me to revisit the parentage of Juana Lozano, who was married to Diego Reynoso y Renteria.

Christoval Reynoso y Renteria was a son of Diego Reynoso y Renteria and Juana Lozano.  Christoval Reynoso y Renteria did leave marriage information in both his marriages, the first in 1735 (to Gertrudis Flores de la Torre, and the last in 1741 (to Anna Maria Gonzalez de Rubalcava).

In his 1741 marriage to Anna Maria Gonzalez de Rubalcava he was noted as the widow of Gertrudis Flores de la Torre. It was also noted in this record that he was the son of Diego de Reynoso and Juana Lozano. The 1741 marriage information record (Mezquital del Oro) provided the relations between earlier Rubalcava family members (Matias and Joseph Rubalcava),  which are all noted at the following record:

Dear Manny,

Thank you for these insights !

I am curious about how you were able to confirm that Francisca de Ortega was indeed the daughter of Luis Maldonado (himself the son of Luis Maldonado and Inés Sánchez de Ortega). Based on your previous comments on the topic (above), I had understood that we were still uncertain which Luis Maldonado was her father. How did you arrive to this conclusion ?

Kind regards

Hola Tristan,

This is a boilerplate document used by notaries for when people wanted to grant someone authority to handle a task for them - basically, to retain someone for a job. If you look at other documents in this same batch, you’ll notice they use the same template. Here’s the opening paragraph:

“Sepan quantos esta carta vieren como yo, Francisco Marin Manzano, vecino y minero de este pueblo, otorgo y conozco que doy todo mi poder cumplido de derecho bastante a Francisco de Ortega y a Juan Diaz de Leon, vecinos en las minas de Sierra de Pinos y a cualquier de ellos solidum.”

Afterwhich, there is a page of legalese, followed by a blank space allowing for specifics - typically, the reason for the power granted (from handling lawsuits, to handling sales, to collecting runaway livestock, among other tasks). There doesn’t appear to be any additional information here, only that the power was granted in said town and on said date, and that it was signed by the granter.

To me, the name of the first recipient looks more like “Francisco de Hortega” rather than “Francisca” - which would make more sense, since if it were Juan Diaz’s wife, as this was a legal document, they’d have named him first, and identified her as his wife. If it is Francisco de Ortega, I don’t know who he was: perhaps he is Francisco Sanchez de Ortega, who was an early resident in SLP and Pinos, and who was originally from La Palma, Canarias, where Francisca Ortega’s father, Luis Maldonado, was from: Luis Maldonado’s mother was named Ines Sanchez de Ortega, so they might even be related.

Cool find. I’m loving those new filters FamilySearch has added, linked to the AI: I’ve spent many an hour foraging through every image on those film rolls, looking for any info on our ancestors, and now it’s so much easier!

Saludos!

I'm afraid I can't read it but it seems that it concerns Francisca de Ortega as well. Could someone try to understand the topic of this document ?

Hola primos!

Amazing the amount of work all of you have put in and I have learned so much as far as the lineage but I would like to learn more as to who these people are. I descend from Juan Diaz de Leon "El Viejo" and his son "El Mozo", and then  Andres DDL. I was wondering if anyone had information as to what their Juan's role was in regards to Pinos? I know his name is on the map in 1603 and owned some mines, but is there any other info anyone else can share?

Thank you so much!

Hello Manny,

When I was a kid, family members would say that Vikki Carr was a distant cousin of ours. I did her family tree and found that she is repeatedlyrelated to my family as she has ancestors from all over Los Altos de Jalisco. I wanted to let you know that she also descends from Andres Diaz de Leon-Duron and Maria Estefania Carillo.

Vikki Carr was her stage name. Part of her father’s ancestral family was mainly from Los Altos de Jalisco, and the other part was mainly from the state of New Mexico. She is also is related to coach Tom Flores through her Altos de Jalisco ancestral roots and is related to quarterback Jim Plunkett through her New Mexico ancestral roots.

Hola prim@s,

I was surprised to see that I hadn’t posted this yet, but then I remembered that this site was down for a while. This is another testamento of Juan Diaz de Leon “el Viejo,” dated 17 Jan 1636, antedating the other by almost twenty years. This one gives us some new information, in that it names his wife, Francisca de Ortega, as the daughter of Luis Maldonado. It says she received no dowry when they married, and that everything that they had, they gained together. It also names two previously unknown sons: Diego Diaz and Luis Maldonado (confirmed in Oct 1638 in Pinos). These two obviously died young and likely left no offspring, since none are mentioned in Juan Diaz de Leon’s second testamento.
As to the identity of Luis Maldonado, Francisca de Ortega’s father: there were two early residents of San Luis Potosi - Luis Maldonado and his brother, Capitan Miguel Maldonado, both born in La Palma, Islas Canarias, sons of escribano publico Luis Maldonado and doña Inés Sanchez de Ortega. The younger Luis Maldonado died by Sep 1603, and I don’t know if he ever married. It’s possible that Francisca de Ortega is the daughter of either Luis Maldonado, and that doña Inés Sanchez de Ortega is the source of the “Ortega” used by Francisca and her daughters.

Great work Manny!

Based on the information that you provided that they were from the Canary Islands, I compiled a possible ancestral line for Francisca Ortega. The dates and places match.

Alvaro Sanchez de La Fuente had at least two wives Ines Sanchez de Ortega descends from both wives.

1)- Alvaro Sanchez de La Fuente m. Beatriz Anaya
2)- Hernan Sanchez de la Fuente m. Ines Gutierrez
3)- Francisca Gutierrez m. Pedro Hernandez de Rociano
4)- Esteban Hernandez Ortega (Aka Esteban Hernández Rociano) m. Isabel de Aday (daughter of Hernan Gómez and Francisca De Aday)
5)- Leonor de Ortega m. Diego Perez de Villanueva (son of Maria Sanchez (aka de la Fuente ) Zambrana and Juan Perez de Villanueva

[Leonor Ortega and Diego Perez de Villanueva are closely related. They have grandparents that are half siblings. ]

Probably (upgraded from possibly)
6)- Ines Sanchez de Ortega m . Luis Maldonado
—————
Possibly (Manny Diez Hermosillo identified Francisca Ortega’s father as Luis Maldonado)
7)- Francisca Ortega m Juan Diaz de Leon

The “Sanchez de La Fuente”/“Sanchez de La Feria” family was nobility.

The Perez de Villanueva ancestry appears to be of Jewish Converso origins and attempts were made hide to this fact and give it a false history of “cristiano viejos”. They were involved in the textile industry and the buying and selling of sugar. The false ancestry involved the surname “Fernandez de Bettencourt”.

There is a descent from The Bethencourt family but it is through Francisca de Aday (aka Francisca Ramos). This line goes back many generations into France.

———————————————————————————————————————
Second line of descent from Alvaro Sanchez and Beatriz de Anaya:

1)- Alvaro Sanchez de La Fuente m. Beatriz Anaya
2)- Hernan Sanchez de la Fuente m. Olaya Rodríguez Zambrana
3)- Francisco Sanchez (aka Francisco Zambrana) m. —— [ I will add her name later as I am still studying the different surnames she also used]
4)- Maria Sanchez de La Fuente Zambrana (aka Sanchez) m. Juan Perez de Villanueva
5)- Diego Perez de Villanueva m. Leonor de Ortega

Probably (upgraded from possibly)
6)- Ines Sanchez de Ortega m . Luis Maldonado
—————
Possibly (Manny Diez Hermosillo identified Francisca Ortega’s father as Luis Maldonado)
7)- Francisca Ortega m Juan Diaz de Leon

Thanks again,
Rick A. Ricci

If Manny is able to find evidence that the Luis Maldonado that is the father of Francisca de Ortega is the same Luis Maldonado that is married to Ines Sanchez de Ortega then we can connect to an aboriginal ancestry from Islas Canarias. These aboriginals have dna that they share with a community from North Africa. Many of these aboriginals were light skinned and blond according to some sources. If you descend from this line, your dna results may show a small percentage of French and North African ancestry. The French coming from the Bethencourt ancestral line.

Thanks for your contributions, Rick.

I still don’t know if Francisca de Ortega descends from Luis Maldonado cc Ines Sanchez de Ortega. For all I know, she was from Ayamonte, like Juan Diaz de Leon, and they married before arriving in Mexico. I’m just running on assumptions, since I know they had a continuous presence in San Luis Potosi.

As for the Luis Maldonado who lived in SLP, I was hoping to find his testamento, but all I could find is the inventory of his shop, which was submitted on 5 Sep 1603 by his executor, Diego Romero. It doesn’t name his parents, so I don’t know how RMB knows that he was the son of Luis Maldonado and Ines Sanchez de Ortega.
I did find a promissory note dated 2 Mar 1603, in which Luis Maldonado and his son-in-law, Juan Diaz, agreed to pay Jacome Jinoves 255 pesos. I don’t know if this Juan Diaz is our Juan Diaz de Leon, since in most notarized documents, ours used the compound surname. Unfortunately, this Juan Diaz couldn’t sign his name - but then, neither could ours, until at least 1631, anyways. Diego Romero was their creditor for this transaction. Interestingly enough, on 25 Nov 1604, Juan Diaz de Leon sold his entire mining operation in SLP to the same Diego Romero.

While Luis Maldonado has been illusive, his supposed brother, Capitan Miguel Maldonado - who I know was son of Luis Maldonado cc Ines Sanchez de Ortega - appears with great frequency in the archives. From various records, we know that brothers Felipe and Alonso de Fraga Corbalan were his nephews. They were the sons of Juan de Fraga Corbalan cc Isabel Diaz de Avila, of La Palma, Canarias; Isabel Diaz de Avila was daughter of Diego Sanchez de Ortega and another Isabel Diaz de Avila. The obvious link would be through Ines and Diego Sanchez de Ortega, who were likely siblings, so Miguel Maldonado and the Fraga brothers were at least 1st-cousins, 1-time removed:

Probable parentestco:
Diego Sanchez de Ortega-1-Ines Sanchez de Ortega
Isabel Diaz de Avila-2-Miguel Maldonado
Felipe de Fraga-3

Another cousin was Francisco Sanchez de Ortega, who submitted his testamento on 29 May 1620. He was son of Juan Sanchez de Ortega and Maria Ponce de Leon. His executors were his cousins Alonso de Fraga and Simon Ponce.

Simon Ponce was son of Cristobal Ponce and Luisa Perez. He submitted his testamento on 12 Oct 1633 and his executor and heir was his cousin, Alonso de Fraga. He was to be entombed in the same crypt as his cousins, Miguel Maldonado and Felipe de Fraga.
There was another Cristobal Ponce who lived in early SLP, who according to RMB, was also a cousin of Miguel Maldonado, though I don’t know how they’re related. So apparently, there was an entire network or cousins in early SLP, all from La Palma, Canarias.

Hope you’re all well!

Hello everyone,

I have a small information that could be useful in the origins of Diaz de Leon family. As we all know now Juan Diaz de Leon, El viejo, was from the city of Ayamonte. While searching for his license to New Spain, i found a document called "Expediente de información y licencia de pasajero a indias de Isabel de León, criada del licenciado Alonso de Villalba, natural de Ayamonte, hija de Francisco Hernández Cataño e Isabel Díaz de León, a Charcas." The document is dated 1603 which is the same year as when Juan Diaz de Leon was registered in Pinos's map. I think this might be a lead on Juan Diaz de Leon's origins.

Dear Manny,

You did not list a second marriage for Juan Diaz de Leon. In my records I do have him married first to Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor but I also have a second marriage in 1669 to Juana Trujillo. Is this a mistake in my records? I also have children by this marriage.
Thanks for all your help,
Rick A Ricci

Comment

Hi Rick,

I believe the Juan Diaz de Leon, who married Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor, and the one who married Juana Trujillo, were 2 different people, because Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor died a widow and was buried 03 Apr 1713, in Pinos. So, there's no way Juan Diaz could've married Juana Trujillo en 2os, since he died before Jacinta (right image): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-YT7D-R?mode=g&i=140&wc=3P9…

The one married to Juana Trujillo might be their son, the same who married Josefa Luisa Garcia de Nava, or he might be the son of Pedro Diaz de Leon and Josefa Gutierrez, who baptized a Juan, 02 Aug 1643, Sagrario SLP (right image):
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GG2L-99QG?mode=g&i=486&wc=…

There's also the possibility that he descended from an entirely different family. There's a Tomas Diaz de Leon cc Maria de la Mota, who baptized Ysabel, 10 Jul 1622, in Puebla de Zaragoza, Pue; there was also another Juan Diaz de Leon cc Barbola Bautista, who baptized Catalina, 02 Feb 1623, in Santa Catarina Martin, Mexico DF. Both couples drop off the map, so I haven't been able to track them.

Dear Manny,

Until we get more information, they will stay in my records as two separate people.

Dear Manny,

Ex President of Mexico Lopez Portillo descends from Diego Ochoa Garibay. There are also connections through my Padilla and Martinez de Sotomayor lines.

I told this information to my sister and she replied that she knew Lopez Portillos brother and knows his family. She also told me that my great aunt married ex president Fox's maternal uncle. I had some information on my second cousins but did not have the connection to Fox in my files. One of My grandmothers half-sisters was my baptismal godmother. Her daughter, Norma is the person who gave me some information on this branch of the family a long time ago, but It did not have connection to Fox, just the name of another great aunts husband, their children and grandchildren.

My oldest sister is not a genealogist, but when I inform her of my research, she has often come up with additional information that is invaluable to my work.

I would like to research more Mexican ex president genealogies. Do you know of any books or sites that will provide more information?

Hola primos,

Again, I owe a debt of gratitude to our prima, Mary Lou, for sharing the index of SLP testamentos; with the information given, I was able to locate that of Juan Diaz de Leon “El Viejo,”

Protocolos notariales 1655, vol 2 exp 22-27;
Exp 27, 26 Aug 1655, img55
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-958X-HHWT?mode=g&i=54&wc=M…

We now have his parents’ names, and his probable place of origin: Juan Diaz de Leon and Ynes Dominguez de Garfias, vecinos y naturales de la Villa de Ayamonte (Huelva) en los Reinos de Castilla.

He names 6 surviving children, born from his marriage with Francisca de Ortega (who still lived, and who would administer his “bienes”):
Ana de Ortega
Maria de Ortega
Francisca de Ortega
Pedro Diaz de Leon
Juan Diaz de Leon
Fray Antonio Diaz de Leon (del Orden de ????? Anyone?)

All 3 daughters were married, and all of his children were over the age of 25 (born before 1630). As mentioned in the index, his children were his heirs, and albaceas were his son, Juan Diaz de Leon, and grandson, Juan de Rebolloso, vecino del Cerro de San Pedro (probably the same Juan de Rebolloso mentioned in RMB’s “Diccionario…” p. 536, as “minero. Estante en el Cerro de San Pedro,” and who would be son of either Ana or Francisca de Ortega, since Maria de Ortega married Hernan Perez de Mojica).

According to Holcombe’s “Cartas,” Juan Diaz and Francisca de Ortega baptized Joseph Diaz de Leon, 13 Jun 1630, in San Matias, Pinos. I believe this is him, as a testigo on the 21 Dec 1648 IM of Cristobal Garcia and Ysabel Mendoza; his age is given as 20 years. What a beautiful signature he had!:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-B7TS-9?mode=g&i=58&wc=3PS9…

He apparently died before Aug 1655, since he’s not listed as an heir.

So, all of the Diaz de Leon in SLP and Nueva Galicia descend from Pedro and Juan “El Mozo,” respectively, in accordance with family lore.

Saludos!

NOTES:

On introduction, says his parents were "residents and natives of Ayamonte," rather than "residents of Nueva Espana," implying that they didn't pass to Indies. Therefore, Juan Diaz de Leon "El Viejo" was likely born in Ayamonte, Huelva.

Juan Diaz de Leon requested that he be buried in the parrish church of San Luis Potosi.

Joseph Diaz, Luis Diaz and Antonia Diaz died before Aug 1655.

No dowry?

Daughter Ana de Ortega was probably married to Juan de Rebolloso, a merchant in early SLP. She apparently had a son named Juan de Rebolloso, who might have been the miner in Cerro de San Pedro.

Daughter Francisca de Ortega issued her testamento in Feb 1661 before Pedro de Avalos in SLP (1661 protocolos begin in May 1661, so not available online).

Manny,

This is great work. Thank you for providing us with this information. Juan Diaz de Leon and Francisca de Ortega are my ancestors too. I had a couple of questions. you mention she had no dowry, does that means something that she had no dowry. also you mention the house in sierra de pinos "casa de vivienda con su solar en Sierra de Pinos" what does solar mean?

Danny C. Alonso

Comment

Hi Danny,

You're welcome.

It was customary for the families of brides to give a dowry, when a daughter married. I don't know the significance of why there was no dowry, it just seems odd, since dowries were the norm, with the landed classes.

A "solar" is a "lot," or a parcel of land.

Here is Francisca de Ortega II's testamento, 12 Feb 1662. Her mother was still alive. She received a dowry of 2,500 pesos.

Dear Manny,

For the records, José Díaz de León died on August 5th, 1650 in the city Xalapa (Veracruz) "en las casas de la morada de Juana Gómez viuda". I don't know what kind of business brought him there and why he was so far away from Sierra de Pinos. He did had time to confess and receive all the sacraments.

Hello, Manny.

Glad to see your interest in San Luis Potosi where I was surprised to find several of my lines (Galvan, de la Cerda, Diaz Infante, Montanez and Marquez to name a few). Here's a link to a research paper that may help you. It covers SLP testaments from 1642 to 1671. It's a summary report and I believe only those persons who died are named. There's a Diaz de Leon. Don't know if he is your line.

From time to time I will add files to my Dropbox GENEALOGY folder. It will be a mishmash of drafts, finished papers, Family Group Sheets, handwritten notes and extractions and just stuff that may help others.

Hello Danny,

The names Diego Camacho and Juliana de Sotomayor caught my eye, too. I think I've seen Diego Camacho in the San Luis Potosi archives, but I've never seen Juliana de Sotomayor before, that's a new name to me. They may be related to the Martinez de Sotomayor.

Rick,

I've seen it written "Delgado," too, but I think it's a "typo" or even an abbreviation. I haven't seen a link between the Delgado of Pinos and the Delgadillo of Nochistlan.

Mary Lou,

That is likely the same Juan Diaz de Leon - he did have sons named Juan & Pedro, and he would have died around 1655. I haven't determined whether he had a grandson named Juan de Revolloso, but that should be easily remedied. Great lead, thanks! And thanks for sharing your notes & files - I imagine there is a "silvermine" of information in there!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

Hola primos,

Wow, I started this thread to nail down the 1st generation of the Diaz de Leon, of Sierra de Pinos, and it looks like we’ve done just that!

Mary Lou just uploaded some extractions from the early San Matias, Pinos, baptisms (thanks, again!):
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yop1j3tqornd0xh/AABnVNtOvuDJtcuW0Gk5vgBHa?or…

As expected, among them appear Juan Diaz de Leon and Francisca de Ortega (baptisms for sons Antonio and Joseph), as well as their 3 daughters, Ana, Francisca and Maria de Ortega. Though hard dates aren’t yet posted, years are, and relationships are confirmed. We now know that Ana de Ortega aka Ana Diaz married Juan de Rebolloso, who was likely the same who was a merchant, in early SLP. We also have the birth year of their son, Juan de Rebolloso (1621), who was one of his grandfather’s albaceas.

More to come!

Hola prim@s,

Most Diaz de Leon’s, born before 1750 and living in Sierra de Pinos and surrounding communities, can be traced back to Juan Diaz de Leon cc Francisca de Ortega, one way or another. Nonetheless, there are still some individuals who have eluded identification. I’ve managed to catch up with some, which I’ll share here, for those of you who may descend from these families.

Santiago Diaz de Leon married Juana de Espitia, aka Juana de Cuenca, on 1 Jun 1674, in Aguascalientes. Their parents aren’t named, and their IM is lost. On their marriage record, he is called Andres Diaz de Santiago, and on other records, he’s listed as Santiago Diaz [de Leon], Andres Diaz, and on one, as Andres Garcia.

From their timeline, Juana de Cuenca y Espitia can be a granddaughter of Antonio de Cuenca and Juana de Espitia, of Aguascalientes, though I still don’t know who her parents are (they aren’t Joseph de Cuenca cc Teresa de Araiza Medina, who had a daughter named Juana, but she married Nicolas Valades).

As for the origin of Andres Diaz, aka Santiago Diaz, my first candidate was Andres, son of Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor, baptized 20 Aug 1653, in San Felipe Apostol, Gto. This makes sense, because several of their children married in Aguascalientes, But then, “Santiago” made me think of a possible connection to Pedro Diaz de Leon cc Josefa de Santiago, which would reconcile his use of “Diaz de Santiago.”

The first clue to his identity came in the form of an IM that Sarod77 located and sent to me: Joseph Miguel Diaz de Leon and Marcela Martina Bernal, 16 Dec 1781, Nra. Sra. de Belen, Asientos. Miguel Diaz was son of Francisco Gordiano Diaz and Micaela Carrillo, and Marcela Bernal was daughter of Vicente Bernal and Gregoria Josefa Diaz: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DHQQ-7JW?i=590&wc=M6QX…

According to witnesses, the bride and groom were at 5 degrees consanguinity, therefore they didn’t need a dispensation. A tree is given:

Juan Jose Diaz-1-Santiago Diaz
Jacinto Diaz-2-Joaquin Diaz
Andres Diaz-3-Joseph Diaz
Francisco Gordiano Diaz-4-Gregoria Josepha Diaz
Jose Miguel Diaz-5-Marcela Bernal

The groom’s pedigree corresponds with what I had, “Juan Jose Diaz” being Juan Diaz de Leon “El Mozo,” who was married to Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor. Santiago Diaz is said to be his brother, therefore, Santiago Diaz de Leon is son of Juan Diaz de Leon and Francisca de Ortega. But this is not possible, because they had no son named, “Santiago.” Furthermore, from records that I had found, Santiago Diaz had no son named “Joaquin”: Jose Diaz, who was father of Gregoria Josefa Diaz, mother of the bride, was the son of Santiago Diaz and Juana de Espitia. So, the witnesses added a generation. The tree should look like this:

Jacinto Diaz-1-Santiago Diaz
Andres Diaz-2-Jose Diaz
Francisco Gordiano Diaz-3-Gregoria Josefa Diaz
Jose Miguel Diaz-4-Marcela Bernal

This places Santiago Diaz at 1 degree with Jacinto Diaz, meaning they were brothers, and both sons of Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor. He is Andres, baptized 20 Aug 1653, San Felipe Apostol, Gto. ¡GOL!

This also places the bride and groom at 4 degrees, meaning they required a dispensation, though they managed to slip under the radar - for the time being.

A couple of weeks after sending me the first IM, Sarod77 sent me another document, dated 4 Sep 1789, and in San Matias, Pinos, with a note saying that I was right, “there was no Joaquin Diaz.” Apparently, 8 years later, Miguel Diaz and Marcela were censured by the Church, for being at 4 degrees consanguinity. I’m not sure what the outcome was, since a portion of the document is written in Latin, which I don’t understand. Nonetheless, this confirms that Santiago Diaz is the son of Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-BSXJ-7?i=633&wc=3P91-D…

Case closed. Thank you, to Sarod77, for cracking that one open for us!

Santiago Diaz de Leon and Juana de Espitia had five children that I know of, all born on Encinillas in Sierra de Pinos:

1. Juan Diaz de Leon Espitia, m1. Petronila Muñoz de Pineda, 20 Mar 1700; m2. Ana Manuela Campos, 7 Jul 1740, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.
2. Maria de Espitia Diaz, m. Domingo Gomez Castro, 23 Apr 1703, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.
3. Nicolasa Diaz Espitia, b. 21 Jan 1687, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.
4. Joseph Diaz de Leon Cuenca, b. 10 Apr 1689; m. Maria del Castillo Martin, 02 May 1713, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.
5. Sebastiana Diaz Espitia, b. 9 Apr 1692, San Matias, Pinos, Zac; m. Miguel Monterrubio Olaldes, 9 Nov 1718, Nra Sra de Belen, Asientos, Ags.

Another mystery has been María de la Encarnación Díaz de León, a resident on Rancho de Las Letras, in Sierra de Pinos. She never married, but she had at least three illegitimate children, born on Letras between 1743 and 1759:

1. Maria Josefa Diaz de Leon, b. 1743, m. Joseph Manuel Santoyo Orzua, 3 Oct 1766, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.
2. Antonia Josefa Diaz de Leon, b. 1748, m. Vicente Diaz de Leon Lopez, im. 16 Sep 1769, San Matias, Pinos, Zac.
3. Joseph Maria Diaz de Leon, b. 28 Oct 1759, San Matias, Pinos, Zac; m. Maria Guadalupe Delgado Perez, 15 Feb 1790, Inmaculada Concepcion, Cienega de Mata, Ojuelos, Jal.

Her pedigree is revealed in the 16 Sep 1769 dispensation for her daughter, Antonia Josefa Diaz’s marriage to Vicente Diaz de Leon, son of Joseph Diaz de Leon and Maria Dolores Lopez de la Cerda: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-6LSD-WP?i=196&wc=12512…

The bride and groom were at 3 & 4 degrees of consanguinity, his father and her grandfather, both named Joseph Diaz, being 1st-cousins. The groom’s father was son of Joseph Diaz and Antonia Delgadillo, and grandson of Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor. We now have the name of Encarnacion Diaz’s father, which is Joseph Diaz (“El Viejo”), whose father would be a son of Juan Diaz de Leon and Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor, but which son?

The answer came while looking through the San Matias, Pinos confirmations: I found María de la Encarnación, hija de Joseph Diaz and Catalina de Islas, confirmed on 19 Jul 1753: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-BKWR-S?i=182&wc=3PS3-H…

¡GOL! This Joseph Diaz was son of Jacinto Diaz de Leon and Sebastiana Gil, and Catalina de Islas was daughter of Nicolas de Dios Islas and Josefa Delgadillo, of Nochistlan, Zac. This is the missing piece to the puzzle, now we have the full tree:

Juan Diaz de Leon cc Jacinta Martin de Sotomayor
Joseph Diaz- 1-Jacinto Diaz
Joseph Diaz ”El Mozo”- 2-Joseph Diaz “El Viejo”
Vicente Diaz-3-Encarnacion Diaz
- - - - - - - -4-Antonia Josefa Diaz

I should mention, that the groom’s parents, Joseph Diaz de Leon and Maria Dolores Lopez de la Cerda, were dispensed at 3 degrees, because their grandmothers were sisters (Jacinta Martinez de Sotomayor and Maria de Martinez de Islas de Sotomayor, who were daughters of Andres Martin Camacho de Sotomayor and Maria de Isla).

The brides parents were also dispensed, at 4 degrees, because their great-grandmothers, were sisters (Maria de Isla and Magdalena de Lavezaris, daughters of Benito de la Isla).

There was another Maria de la Encarnacion, who lived on Letras and who had an hijo natural named Esteban Diaz de Leon, who married Nicolasa Becerra on 13 Sep 1733, in Pinos. I don’t know if this is the same Maria de la Encarnacion, since this one is never given a surname, and would’ve given birth to Esteban around 1710, some 30 years before the birth of the next child, and 49 years before the birth of the last. Improbable.

Thanks Manny for all the information. I am new to Nuestros Ranchos and it has been a longtime that I wanted to answer to this post. I am searching all the members of the Díaz de León family. Andrés/Santiago did cost me some problem also.
There is another Díaz de León that is causing me problem: Agustina Díaz de León, española, that died on 20th of June of 1773 at Puesto de las Encinillas, jurisdicción del Real de Sierra de Pinos:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-BM9D-B?i=61&wc=3P9B-T3…

We can also find her in the Padrones of Pinos of 1764:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9BF-3358-T?i=495&cat=…

Encinillas was the living place for many years of the Díaz de León Family and she is mentioned next to the families of Francisco Gordiano and Andrés Díaz de León. That might suggest a link with two brothers. I believe that she could have been a daughter of Andrés Díaz de León and Dionisia Durón-Gutiérrez. She is mentioned as viuda when she passed away but I haven’t found any records that might correspond to her on Family search. Do you have any clue on this person?

Thanks!

Tristán

Dang, Tristan,

I just looked at your tree - you are PURO Diaz de Leon! How many times? I’m only twice, but the rest of your tree looks like my abuelo’s. Encantado conocerle, primo!

Agustina Diaz de Leon - I haven’t connected her yet. But seeing how she lives between the other children of Andres Diaz cc Dionicia Duron, I think it’s likely she’s also their child. As Rick says, they had 6 children when they married, one, being Geronimo Roman, and I only count four, that I have found, who were born before 1728. Agustina could be the 5th, though it’d still be good to find something to verify it. I’ll keep my eyes open. Here she is in the 1765 padron, if you don’t already have it (right image, right column):
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-BKW3-Z?i=232&wc=MC76-R…

Phelipe Moran drops off the map, so I wonder if he and Agustina were ever married? I know Paula’s marriage record says she was legitimate, but those aren’t always accurate. Do you have anything on their other children?

Thanks, and great work!

Manny,
Juan Díaz de León is 11 times my ancestor ! Spanish families were much connected during this time as you know. Concerning Andrés Díaz de León and Dionisia’s children, I was able to identify 6 children for the moment:

- Andrés Díaz de León y Durón-Gutiérrez : Born around 1716 in Asientos and died on 20th of December of 1774 in Palo Alto, jurisdiction of Ciénega de Rincón. He was married to María Estefanía Carrillo y Díaz de León.

- Elena Díaz de León y Durón-Gutiérrez : Born around 1718 and died on 6th of November of 1772 in Encinillas, jurisdiction of Pinos. She had an illegitimate child with Jacinto Díaz de León y de Islas, her cousin. They made a dispensation but I think that the marriage never occurred.

- Francisco Gordiano Díaz de León y Durón-Gutiérrez : Born around 1722 in Asientos and died on 30th of May of 1805 in Asientos. He was married to Margarita Micaela Carrillo de Sandi y de Salcedo.

- Cacilda Díaz de León y Durón-Gutiérrez : Born around 1723 in Asientos and died on 10th of November of 1780 in Encinos, jurisdiction of Sierra de Pinos. She was married to Matías de Castañeda y de Carvajal.

- Antonio Díaz de León y Durón-Gutiérrez : He died on 11th of November of 1752 in Encinillas, jurisdiction of Pinos.

- Nicolasa Díaz de León y Durón-Gutiérrez : She was married to Antonio Díaz Tirado y de Castañeda.

I think that, Antonio and Nicolasa could have been born after 1728. However I didn’t search for her IM for the moment to know her age.

PS : I thought that Geronimo Roman was a previous husband that Dionisia had. I guess that I didn’t read correctly the dispensa for Andrés and Dionisia.

This is great work. Juan Diaz de Leon is my ancestor too. I wish I knew something to add, but I dont. I was curious though about the witnesses and other property owners in 1604, Diego Camacho and Juliana de Sotomayor and if you think they're related to the Martin Camacho/Martn de Sotomayor family.

I am very excited to be joining this group. I live in California, USA, and I trace my ancestry back to the early Mexican settlers who came to California between 1769 and 1848. I am currently investigating my family's lines in Ahualulco, Jalisco.

Some of the families I am researching are: VÁSQUEZ, GÓMEZ, CORONA, DE ARAIZA, CORTÉS, DE YSASI/ISSASI, TIZNADO, ALVARÉZ, "CASTELO," RODRÍGUEZ, PATRÓN, DE LEÓN, DE HARO, PACHECO, DEL VALLE, DE SOTO, DE ÁVILA, ESPINOSA, LUGO.

I have seen "MA" used for mostly Maria, but also used for Mariana when transferred probably by LDS.

I also found one that was transcribed to Maxima, the MA may have looked like an MX on that one, but it turned out to be Mariana with cross referencing.

Hello, Ruben,

Thanks so much. I first found the document on Ancestry because they have indexed Civil Registrations whereas Fam Search has not, Plus they have a direct link that pulls the image for one to see. but I still found it for you on Fam Search:

Enter Search on Fam Search. Then:

1.
Click on "Browse all Published Collections"
2.
Click on "Historical Record Collections"
3.
Scroll down to "Mexico, Chihuahua, Civil Registrations 1861-1997" - Browse Images
4.
Click on "Browse through 1,561,583 images"
5.
Sign in with your Fam Search Account. You might have to do this a couple of times until you can get back to where you were. I hate the way they make us do that.
6.
Click on "La Cruz"
7.
Click on "Matrimonios 1871-1950
8.
Go to Image 98 of 1903 - it will be on the left side

Thanks in advance,
