Chavez from Ameca, Calvillo, possibly Jalpa?

I am trying to go further on my Chavez family. I hope any of these names sound familiar to someone out there. My ancestor Cesario Chávez married Maria Paula Lopez y Ayon in Ameca on 17 September 1800. Through his marriage certificate I found he was born around 1762 in a place called Valle de Huejucar which I found, thanks to info from other members, is the same place as today’s Calvillo, Aguascalientes. His parents are mentioned as José María Chávez and María de la Encarnación Velasco. I haven’t been able to find his baptism certificate from that time since the records from Calvillo don’t go that far back.

On the other hand, I found two baptism records from nearby Tabasco, Zacatecas who may be Cesario’s sisters:

Luisa Feliciana Chavez, born in “el puesto del Capulin”, baptized on 1 sep 1748. Her parents were Joseph Chavez and Maria Velasco.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15087-18372-13?cc=1804458&wc…

Jospha Maria Gregoria Chavez, born in “Ojo Caliente”, baptized on 27 apr 1754. Her parents were Joseph de Chavez and Ma. de la Encarnacion Velasco. Guejucar, aka Calvillo, is also mentioned in this record.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15087-19620-14?cc=1804458&wc…

I assume Ojo Caliente is the same place found near Calvillo, but what about El Capulin? Is there a location with that name in that area?

Are there other parishes in the area where I should look as well during this time period?

While browsing in Ameca, I found a marriage record for Jose Maria Chavez and Maria Rita Vitalia Alvarez on 15 may 1790. He is mentioned to be from Jalpa and born around 1768 and has the same parents as my ancestor Cesario Chavez and the two girls previously mentioned:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18566-73201-19?cc=1874591&wc…

Unfortunately, I just realized that there are no records of Jalpa for that time period, either. Am I getting out of luck? I will appreciate any advice.

Maria was to marry Jose Serapia Escalante vuido de Juana Juliana Monsebais but she passed before the six month penance was given for primer grado. I couldn't read exactly how it was primer grado but it sounded as if she had had an illicit relationship before not sure with whom. Thanks for the help

Research Questions - General Questions about Specific Situations

Good Afternoon Community Members,

One of the reasons I joined this community recently is to improve the way I perform my research, which I am happy to say has improved since I joined. Yet, I still have questions which might be answered by the collective wisdom of the community. Some of these may have been asked and already asnwered, but I ask in ignornace.

Here are my questions:

In researching christening records, I have noticed the occasional listing with only a mother's name listed/captured. I would think this is obviously a situation where a child is being born out of wedlock or some other related situation. However, I noticed yesterday, the same mother had 3 different kids over a period of 7 or 8 years with no father named (No relation to me).

Is there something else at work here or is it just a situation where a woman is having children out of wedlock? Is there something else we can gleam from seeing this trend? Thoughts/Opinions???

In working with the familysearch.org website, I have noticed lots of indexes where a film number is captured, but no image is available.

Does this mean the image is available through some other resource, such as through one of the LDS Family Research centers?

What is the relative research value of familysearch.org vs. an LDS Family Research Center? Is more information/resources available though one of the research centers vs the website?

Thank you, in advance, for your thoughts and input.

Familia de Leonardo Fregoso

Hola Amigos,

NAVARRO family 1910 Guadalajara, Jalisco

QUERY - NAVARRO

NAVARRO is my single biggest (and seemingly) unsurmountable "brick wall" line (with one secondary known line: Padilla). I've posted an overview of my Navarro grandfather in my ancestry in my folder here: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/CindyF

Here are the details for this line:
My grandfather Jose Sarabia* Navarro, Jr. was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco probably between 1909-1910. At his February, 1935 marriage he gives his age as 25 at last birthday. In September, 1941 on his daughter's birth certificate he is listed as 31 years old. He gives his parents names as Jose Navarro and Maria Luisa Padilla both born in Jalisco, Mexico per his marriage record. On the 1941 birth certificate, it says he had lived in California for 20 years.

*The "Sarabia" in his name only appears on daughter Carmen's birth certificate and divorce papers (he has an aka on divorce papers of Joe Sarabia Navarro).

I have only one photo of my grandfather --his 1935 marriage portrait with my nana. Unfortunately, I don't know if he had any siblings, nor do I know anything else about his origins or his family. The family story is that he abandoned my nana and his children after my mom mom was born in 1941, and returned to Mexico. (I've never found him on a Federal Census either. However, he does show up in a couple of city directories.)

I spent a couple of hours last night and the better part of today wading through civil registration films at Family Search and have not yet found Jose.

So, if you know anything about this individual or family, I'd appreciate and info or leads. I'm not done going through the films, but I'm going to give my eyes a break and spend some time researching "breaking thru brick walls" to see if I can get any ideas of how to proceed. By the way the overview document I uploaded also lists my current sketchy research plan.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Luis Lópes Suáres

Is anyone familiar with Luis Lópes Suáres? My family is descended various times from him and his wife Catarina de la Cruz (maybe Hernándes). I just stumbled upon a marriage certificate from 11 February 1673 (in Aguascalientes) that I think was probably a first marriage to Mariana Sepulbeda, because it gives the names of Luis' parents as Juan Lópes and Josefa Xuáres. I am very excited about going back one more generation, but I can find absolutely no mention of anyone in this family before the 1673 marriage.

I do know that Luis died before 1729 - the date of a marriage of a daughter Maria Josefa from the second marriage. I cannot find the marriage to Catarina, but there is a baptismal certificate for sons Bentura (1716) and Simon (1724). There is also a record for a son from the first marriage - Gabriel (1682).

Many of the early records for this family give the surname Xuáres or Juáres, but all of Luis' sons started using Suáres.

Here is the link for the marriage with Mariana - it's the middle record on the right: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12446-30482-34?cc=1502404&…

Does Anyone Know of a Military Registry (1675 - 1695 era?) of Nueva Galicia?

I am looking for Fernando De La Campa y Cos who supposedly was in Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Mexico in 1693. He was born in Burgos, Spain in 1676.

At 1693 that would make him 17 years old and I haven't ran across any documents to mention him to see what he was doing. I know that his older brother Antonio De La Campa y Cos was a Capitan of the District of Sombrerete in 1675. By 1693, he could have been a General.

I am wondering if Fernando De La Campa y Cos was a soldier in the company of his older Antonio De La Campa y Cos to learn and take over when he got older.

That is why I want to find a registry of the military in the region if Fernando De La Campa y Cos is on that list. My guess he would be under the command of his older brother.

OROZCO (Orosco) family 1890s Tototlan, Jalisco

QUERY - OROZCO

OROZCO is one of my "brick wall" lines. I've posted an overview of this individual in my folder here: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/CindyF

Here are the details for this line:
My 2nd gr-grandmother Maria Dolores Orozco was born in Tototlan, Jalisco in August 1895, probably the third child of Rafael Orozco (Orosco) and Manuela Vargas (Bargas). She came to the USA in November 1926 with her children to join her husband Jose Jimenez Jimenez who was already in Los Angeles, CA.

Their family group looks something like this (probable family members but not 100% sure on any of this):

PARENTS
Rafael Orozco, b. abt. 1868 in probably Jalisco
m. Manuela Vargas, b. abt. 1868 in probably Jalisco
Married in abt 1888 probably Jalisco

CHILDREN:
1. Piedela Orozco, f, b. abt. 1890 in Mexico
2. Maria de Jesus Orozco, f, b. abt. 1891 in possibly Tototlan, Jalisco, Mexico
3. Maria Dolores Orozco, f, b. 9 Aug 1895 in Tototlan, Jalisco, Mexico
4. Manuel Orozco, m, b. poss bet 1897-1910 in Mexico
5. Salvador Orozco, m, b. abt. 1912 in possiby Tototlan, Jalisco, Mexico
6. possibly Delfina Orozco, f

All names come from interviews with my grandmother and grandaunt before they passed away. Family oral tradition also states that Salvador was a guitar maker. He may also have been part of a symphony orchestra. One of the sons may have settled in the Chicago area of Illinois.

I have a couple of photos of her at different ages. I have one photo of Salvador who was considerably younger than she was (he was about the same age as her eldest daughter).

I have been unable to find vital records for this family, other than Maria Dolores' death certificate, issued in California. However, I'm in possession of a copy of an immigration document she brought with her from Mexico, "servicio de migracion", that gives her birthdate and place. I've been unable to locate church baptismal/marriage records at FamilySearch. Critical years are simply missing from the available films, much to my frustration. (BTW, does anyone have idea why some years are missing? Might they just not be online, but still available elsewhere?)

I'd appreciate leads or information from anyone who might know more about any of these individuals. Also, I'm going to be in Salt Lake City in November and will have a few precious hours to visit the family history library. So, I'm also looking for suggestions of what sorts of things to search out while I'm there.

Thanks!

Real y Minas de San Joaquin? Fregoso? Hijar Bracamonte?

I'm looking at the parish records of Guachinango, Jalisco. Some of the older entries and books belong to a place called Real y Minas de San Joaquin. I'm not very familiar with the geography of this area. Is there a place around Guachinango or Mascota named San Joaquin? I understand that there used to be a mine in Guachinango, but I haven't been able to locate San Joaquin.

My ancestors Simon Thadeo Fregoso and Maria Margarita de Barreda married there on February 9, 1765. Simon's parents were Domingo Fregoso and Beatriz de Hijar Bracamonte from this parish. Margarita's parents were Antonio de Barreda and Margarita Navarro from Ayo el Chico.

I wonder if Simon Fregoso has any relationship to the Chavez Fregoso from los Altos. I googled Hijar Bracamonte and I'm learning the story of this family and how it began with first conquistadores of Nueva Galicia. Now I just need to find the link between my Beatriz and the Hijar Bracamonte from the history books.

Question on Ancestry.com?? How to store a photos of a Census in one file?

I have a question for any of you that have ancestry.com

I had found a census of 1783 of our town with all of the surrounding ranchos which is around 30 pages. So if I download all of those pages. How can I create a file in ancestry.com in my account where I can store that whole census of 30 pages (photos) into one file?

Manzano line back to Spain

Estimados miembros,

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18411-27840-89?cc=1874591&wc…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18561-22138-5?cc=1874591&wc=…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18411-27835-8?cc=1874591&wc=…

Preguntas:
Sergio

Hello all it's been awhile since I have been on here but I have uncovered another line in Jalisco. I'm looking for any information that would help me verify (citation wise) the line I have so far on the surname of de Hijar. My grandmothers paternal side. The Hijar name can be traced back to the conquistador Jaime I of Aragon. I just need to document a few generations in Mexico. This is my line...any help would would be greatly appreciated! thank you

Hernando de Martel

In the chapter of Gallegos in Retornos de Espana de la Nueva Galicia by Mariano Gonzalez Leal states that he could not find how Juan de Escobar and Beatriz de Gallegos gave rise to the name their son Hernando Martel took but that his son (no wife mentioned took the name Hernando Gallegos. There is mentioned that "los Gallegos mas antiquos extendidos en la region probably are descendants of of Hernando de Martel Alcade de Teocaltiche.

Has anyone found such proof or more information. He said the oldest families of Gallegos lived in Nochistlan since XVII

Mariano Gonzales Leal starts his research of a disconnected Gallegos with the family of Pedro Gonzales y Maria de Frias who had 3 children: Juana Martel married in Aguascalientes, 19 September 1813 to Miguel Sierra; Beatriz Gallegos (buried 4 Oct 1643 in Aguascalientes) married to Luis Gonzales; and Hernando Martel married 22 Oct 1634 in Aguascalientes, with Beatriz Retamosa or Villegas.

Purificacion and Antonio Garcia Cubas' Gift to Us

Jose:

There is a wonderful publication by Antonio Garcia Cubas called the Diccionario Geográfico, Histórico y Biográfico de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos. It is available online through the links section of the site. It has descriptions of all localities including cross-referencing historical names...

You can read the rest on the digital library of the Colegio de Mexico's site:

=================================
Does anyone know of a sourcebook that lists the names of towns, provinces, etc. established by the Spaniards after the conquest of Mexico and during the early colonial period. Presently, I am especially looking for the location of the Province of Purificacion. Was this an early name for Guadalajara or was it near Guadalajara or was Guadalajara in it?

Greetings from Tejas (another newbie) - Tracking Family in Zacatecas

Hello everyone,

My name is Arthur and I am looking forward to being part of the online community. I was born in California, but I now live in Texas, where most of my family first lived when coming from Mexico. My mother's family came from Parral, Chihuahua and my father's family (Great grandfather and most of his children) came from Fresnillo, ZAC via the Durango, Durango area. All of them came up to the US between 1915-1930, during and immediately after the Revolution. My mother and father were both US born.

I have always been interested in my family history, but had limited contact with extended family, as my maternal grandparents died when my mother was a child and my paternal grandfather died when I was 6 years old. My remaining grandmother, lived with my uncle in Colorado and I had limited contact with her. As for extended cousins, for the most part, I have had no contact with them until more recently, when I came across a 2nd cousin who has also been doing family research. I picked up my research about a year ago and I have more or less been able to track all four of my grandparent lines to or through Fresnillo, ZAC/Durango or Parral, Chihuahua.

Regarding my research, I have started to hit a wall with the online resources I am currently using. Primarily I use is the myfamilysearch (LDS) website and I have become pretty good at understanding how the data is indexed and commonly perform search across the film or index number rather than a name/description search functions.

Where I have challenges now is understanding where the 'gaps' exist in the LDS information database. I have been told by my stepmother (who retired to the Jerez, ZAC area with my father), that there were entire sections of govt and church records destroyed during the Revolution. I know from looking at the Parral, Chi online records, there are 'chunks' of birth/baptism and wedding information missing from certain periods in the late 1800s.

Has anyone else figured out a workaround for this missing/destroyed information? I am thinking I need just one lucky break to get rolling again.

Also, how does one determine when a family ancestor came from Spain/France to Mexico? My initial online searches show there is limited online resource for some Euro countries. I have one grandparent line which I think has "jumped" to Europe because the track just stops...unless the records have been destroyed, which is another possibility.

If anyone is interested, you can see my initial submission background info here:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/ajmedrano

The primary names I am looking for are Martiniano Medrano and Juliana Valdez in about the 1850-1860 timeframe for Fresnillo, Zac. Both may have had connections to the Hacienda Santa Cruz or the Hacienda Trujillo. If anyone has information about those haciendas, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!!!!!

Padron (Census) of Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico Year 1783

It is in a document on Colotlan 1785 that is 314 pages long. It is very interesting because beginning on pg 112 it talks about the nearby pueblos in detail.

On page 178 the padron of Huejuquilla 1783 begins.

Attached are just some examples.

If you want to see this. The reference number is:

Pars link: http://www.archivesportaleurope.net/web/guest

Then on the menu go to Verse 90 imagen 179

But you can go to the previous page where it begins saying the padron of Huejuquilla year 1783
