Cindy, my family ancestors are from Jalos, Jalisco. My great grandfather was Jose Sotero Gutierrez Perez he owned el rancho de LA Escondida between Jalos and San Miguel El Alto he was married to Maria Jesus Romo. The De la Torre comes from my grandfather Merced de la Torre from Santana in the same general area.

Hi Joseph,

Thank you for your kind offer. The book looks interesting to those
of us who not only descend from Spain, but from England and France
and other countries, too. If anything will bring us out of the
woodwork, it is something useful for free. Please put me down for

Have a great holiday. You're certainly in the spirit already.

Hi Miggy,
My Family is from Acatic. So far I have can tell you that they had Rancho El Sauz in Acatic. I know that my Grandmother was Josephina Gutierrez and her parents were Lupe Gutierrez and Josephina Gutierrez and then I have a possible Gr Gr Gr Grandparents of Alvino and Felicitas Gutierrez. There are some Becerras and De Moron's in their somewhere. I have some cousins that married DeLaTorre's from Acatic so it gets even more confusing. I posted my info on the N.R. website, because for the life of me I cannot find where I wrote it. But to be honest I really don't know that much.

Joseph,
Thank you for being such an inspiration in all of our lives. I promise to
contribute to your beautiful dream. I discovered that it is in the darkest
times of our lives that we find the greatest gifts.

I've started to collect photographs and stories of those family members who
are still here with us. I've recruited various family members to assist me
and have inspired many of them to look for historical treasures that been
placed in storage.

I would love to collaborate with NuestrosRanchos members who have roots in
the Jalostotitlan, Jalisco region. Please let me know if you are interested
and how we can contribute as a team to Joseph's dream. Thanks so much.

Hello,

Back in 2002 my wife, Figen and I were involved in a serious car
accident in which a drunk driver crashed into us. We survived but I was
out of work for about 6 months and during that time I googled "Puentes"
and found a message from someone looking for information about my father
and uncles. It turned out to be a cousin who was doing genealogy and
that started me on this trip of doing my families genealogical research.
I knew that I didn't know anything about genealogy and even less on how
to do Mexican Genealogy so I decided to surround myself with others that
were doing research in my geographical area: Jalisco and Zacatecas. So
in 2002 I started the Yahoo group: Ranchos which was only for Jalisco
and Zacatecas but later Aguascalientes was added. With the help of many
volunteers the group has become what it is today but the groups
existence would probably be in doubt if it hadn't been for the
tremendous amount of work that Arturo Ramos has put in by building and
maintaining our beautiful website. If anyone in the group should be
remembered with an overnight express package of frozen tamales or
something it should be Arturo. Thank you Arturo.

construyendo y manteniendo nuestro Web site hermoso.
Gracias Arturo.]

Anyway back to my dream. Yes I started the group as a selfish desire but
knew that it would also be a place where those that knew even less than
I could be helped as well. I'm happy, very happy that over the years
many members have been able to advance their genealogies with help of
the members of the group. Well this is where I want to make my point.
Right now there are well over 300 members of the group but there is only
a core group of 30-50 that are consistently active in the discussion
groups. My communication is mainly directed to the rest of the group
that is not active. I know very well that many of you have gained
benefit from members of this group but have we received anything from
you? You would know the answer to this question. I personally am maxed
out and don't see myself getting more active in the group than trying to
keep things balanced behind the scenes and making sure things stay
within the norms established. But for those that have received much from
the group but given little I'm making a request of you.

I would propose that 2009 be the year of instruction. A year where the
many teach the many rather than the what is currently happening and the
few teach the many. There are hundreds of things that can be taught. I
would ask that you "donate" 20 hours in 2009 and come up with a Jalisco,
Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes genealogy/history/cultural lesson to
teach the group. Every one of us is intelligent enough to put your mind
to work and do some research on something related to our area of
research and share it with your fellow group members. It can be a
history lesson. Tell us about the history of the rancho your GGG
grandparents were born in. Tell us the history of a favorite recipe that
comes from Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes. Someone do a Power
Point on how to do a place search, a film search, a batch search, a
request for a photocopy service from Salt Lake, etc., etc., etc. Someone
go to http://www.loc.gov/rr/hispanic/geneal/index_gc.html and pick two

Dear Joseph:
Thank you for all the work you have done and all the little hints you give us. You do not know how much you have had an impact on the people of this group. It is a priceless gift you have given us.
I want to also thank everyone who puts in countless hours into making this site the greatest.
You have inspired me. I plan to add some spreadsheets to my files soon, I have been extracting De La Torre, Ledesma, Alviso, Jauregui, Cervantes, Iniquez and Gonzales. I have grouped the families together as I find documents. Ok, it sounds obsessive, but I wanted to track my husband's family and wanted to rule out the wrong families, so I just found all of them and started grouping. The Gonzales I just started, because at the beginning I thought it might be just impossible to track that group. Anyway, many of the files, I could not link up to my family, so I am going to share my orphan info in the hopes that someone might be able to use it. If someone finds something, I can give them the resource or better yet, the resource and scan the document. The Excel spreadsheet can be searched by using the "Find" option and put in the first name or last name or better just a few letters within the name. This has taken me a long time to compile. Mind everyone that these files are from the mid 1800's to the 1900's, I am not as far back in research as many of you. It is nice as when you find a link, you sometimes find many of the siblings and their families. I have had a few members ask me for everything I have on a certain name. You can imagine the task, so I am just going to put this out there for anyone to use. I will announce when I have the spreadsheets in my file folder.
Just getting some time to go through some relevant emails I saved and once again, Joseph you have given me a gem. I did the search on the Jalostotitlan researchers. Wonderful!!! Problem is I was not one of the researchers. This was because I have been naughty. Neglecting to update my files to extend my areas of research. I have remedied the problem, so please do not give me a lump of coal this Christmas.
Warm Wishes and Happy Holidays to All.

Thanks Maureen

when people filled out their original applications that is the
information that the advanced search references. So the place to add
Jalostotitlan is to update your account information and add it there.
You would log in with your username and pw and then click on "my
account" and then click on "edit" and then under research you would add
Jalostotitlan to your list of "Locations of Research Interest (Specific
ranchos or pueblos in each state):"

Very interesting that your grand fathers are also from Juchitlan.  There has to be a connection so lets look into this further.  I don't have anything on computor, my info is all on paper but I really would like to dive into my geneology now.

Have you ever been to Juchitlan?  We should exchange phone numbers so we can talk.  What city do you live in now?

Greetings to all: In keeping with the spirit of sharing, I submit the following beautiful love story. This legend is special to me because my grandmother was born and raised in Zacatecas, Zac. Her first child was also born in Zacatecas and he was living at Callejon del Indio Triste No 59 when his own son was born. For those who can read Spanish, enjoy.

Arturo. Gracias Arturo.

joseph

ps: make sure if the lessons are not directly genealogy related to
Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes that you post them on the
general@nuestrosranchos.org discussion list.

Dear Joseph, is a pleasure to see the way that the great things happen.

I am very happy to stay in the group, and I like your idea.
I understand the priority of the Zacatecas, Jalisco and Aguascalientes
information, but if you thing could be interesting for you, I offer to share
information from San Luis Potosi, I have found that a lot of families from
"Los Altos de Jalisco" in the ends of XIX and beginnings of the XX century,
move to San Luis Potosi. I Have 6 from my Ggrandparents of 8, that are from
La Chona, San Juan de Los Lagos, Lagos de Moreno (Villalobos, Quesada,
Perez, De Alba, Lomelín, Ortiz).and the other two, have relation with
Zacatecas (Sanchez and Gordoa)

If you need other kind of help please let me know.
Best Regards
Cristobal Villalobos

Asunto: [Nuestros Ranchos] My Dream/Mi Sueño

Someone
go to http://www.loc.gov/rr/hispanic/geneal/index_gc.html and pick two
or three of your surnames and contact the libraries that own these
volumes and have the 10-20 pages on your surnames sent to you. Take that
information and have it translated into English and share it with the
group. There are so many things that can be done.

If the members of the group that are not active don't invest in the
group I'm concerned that time will find the group dissolving. Let's
start investing and making the group stronger. My wish is that 2012,
when the Maya Calendar ends, will find the nuestrosranchos.org group
still going strong.

ps: make sure if the lessons are not directly genealogy related to
Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes that you post them on the

If you relate the discussion to our area of research just like you did
in this email then it is very on topic and can be posted on the
research@nuestrosranchos.org list, but if you think your message (your
teaching lesson) will be 100% on SLP and not related to our area of
research then put it on the general@nuestrosranchos.org list.

So my answer is yes please teach us about SLP as related to Los Altos.

Thank you, Joseph and Arturo for all of your hard work on this site. It is "home" or a "road that leads to home" for many of us and I, for one, appreciate all that you have done here.

I welcome the opportunity to create something for the group, and will do my part to share some information relating to the history of Zacatecas.

In the last few months, I have invested in growing my library and hope that very soon I can share some of the historical data and information that is contained in these precious volumes of work. Most of them are works created for university-level studies, but have many gems of knowledge, and especially names of people who established haciendas and ranchos--not normally found in general history books.

Look for my post soon. A special thanks goes to all of those members who selflessly share their information, and take the time to send emails, PMs, and in my case - I have been fortunate to have a couple of members send me scans of records. GRACIAS.

Have a beautiful, peaceful and joyful holiday season.

Jose Maria Casillas Hermosillo de Gonzalez

Que tal,

I saw your posting on your website.  The Hermosillo family name is truncated from the Casillas family name.  We've been using birth certificates and previous work done by Alberto Casillas in his book titled the "Casillas" to trace back the Casillas family .

Gonzalez (de Hermosillo, de Rubalcaba)

Claudia, I'm still unclear as to your question. I have a branch of
Rubalcabas in my ancestry, mostly from Yahualica but I think they originate
in Nochistlan, Zacatecas. I know there is a town of Rubalcaba, south of

Gonzalez (de Hermosillo, de Rubalcaba, etc.)

Dumb question...

How do we know whether certain Gonzalez families are "Hermosillo or "Rubalcaba, or...?"
Is there a way to figure this out if a record does not specify? Are certain towns/villas presumed to be Gonzalez de xxx???

Claudia, you do not assume until you see a birth, or marriage certificate with the name and only then can you add the same composed last name to the siblings or decendents or the following ancestors.

Please respond if you have researched this. I'm trying to decipher my Gonzalez from Yahualica. Thanks.
thanks.

Yes, Miguel, I figured that much...perhaps my question wasn't clear...

From what I know, the "hermosillo" and "rubalcaba" denote a region in Spain, versus a compounded last name. Am I mistaken?

I notice there are more Gonzales de Hermosillo in my area of interest. Just wondering if any other member here has done a deeper research on this. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "assume." And if I am incorrect about the region vs. compound - please let me know.

Thanks.

Comentario

Hi Claudia, surnames are very complicated, I still have trouble understanding! What I do know
compound and denote a region go hand in hand. Usually and typically most Spaniards had the typical
patrónimico followed by a "de" then the city or place. But others had two places or two patrónimicos
and others. Like Díaz y Ortiz or González de Hermosillo. Take Juan González de Hermosillo, when
he traveled to New Spain. Look at his name. You can decode it. It means my name is Juan
one of my ancestors (most likely in the 12th Century 1300-1400) was named Gonzalo who
came from "el pueblo o villa de Hermosillo, España. Anytime last names ending in -OZ, IZ, EZ, -UEZ
denote "son of". If I had a child in medieval Spain. It would be Martín Daniel. YES Daniel (my name)
is his last name. Notice Daniel doesnt follow the rule -EZ, IZ, OZ or UEZ, this was the exception
not all father names could follow the rule because it would sound weird. Imagine Martín Danieluez
or Danieloz Danieliz just simply Daniel. Other examples are García, Denis, Franco. Hurtado is a different
origin it means the man who was robbed. Like the Mendoza. Hurtado in Spain means él fue hurtado
its much older Spanish but can still be heard in parts of Jalisco, Argentina but in Spain its very out of
fashion simply le robaron will work. Robar and Hurtar are synonyms. This naming system lasted
from the 800's-ca. 1350.) Each generation would have different last names but some followed our Spanish about giving the same last name to the daughter after their grandfather, hence all the Lorenza Ruiz de Esparzas existed. Somewhere around 1320-1350 the Spaniards chosed to keep the last name the currently
had so if your last ancestor had González they decreed that from now on all my descendants will have my the last name of the grandfather and wont ever be changed any more (besides marriages and the naming after ancestors). It was seen as too Germanic and they wanted to create a stronger Kingdoms not sure how that was affected by names. By this time España was being dressed just like a Turkey but not quite
ready to become our España we know today. There were only three crowns on the peninsula instead of the starting 12. (The knings knew how to marry to become bigger) Portugal, Castilla and Aragón. Through they were all related. Eventually 150 years later Isabella and Fernando would pay Colombus and created our existence in the New World. Hope this helps might be confusing. Saludos, Daniel Méndez del Camino

You can somewhat tell but not recommended look at the names they use and what place they're from. Itend to find Hermosillo in Jalos while Ruvalcabas I can find in San Juan de los Lagos and Nochistlán. -Daniel
Also the marriages some families tened to marry other families than certain others. The Hermosillos were close to the Martín del Campo and Mendoza. Only examples I can come up with.

Valeria,
I will go to Mexico by the end of the year. My father passed away (he is the Olague) but I will check and see if my mother knows about it.
If my grandfather's father (on my father's side) was called Eulogio we might have similar birth dates for our Eulogios. Not sure though.
I will keep you posted.

Lester,

I am confused. I found this website about several "Ruta de Plata"s in Europe and the New World. It has a map of the Mexican Ruta de Plata that goes from Mexico City northward to Santa Fe, and branches from Mexico City to the ports at Acapulco and Vera Cruz. It doesn't show the Ruta going to Nuevo Leon, only through the states of Guanajuato, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, Durango, Chihuahua, and ending in Santa Fe in New Mexico. The text only mentions mines and cities along the route through those states.

Hi there Emilie ,

That´s a neat site . Ok , here goes . First off I didn´t say that the Ruta de Plata went through Nuevo Leon and as the wonderful site that you looked up shows , it runs´up the middle of the country toward New Mexico .

Our ancestors were men and women of adventure and fortune seekers ( God bless there little souls ) and they used the Ruta de Plata as a guide and went off in different directions in pursuit of thier dreams .

The state of Nuevo Leon borders around San Luis Potosi , Coahuila and Zacatecas . I´m guessing that wherever they saw mountains they went to see if they could find minerals to mine , that´s all I was saying . A lot of the fouonders of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon came from Zacatecas .

The three states are relatively close to Coahuila, Tamaulipas , San Luis Potosi and Nuveo Leon which seems to me that there is more than a possibility that some of the people from the tri states may have wondered off toward one or more of those other states .

Here´s a tid bit of information : Three brothers from Teocaltiche the Carrillos y Sandi came to Saltillo during the second half of the 17th century shortly there after came Alteno Francisco Gonzalez Hermosillo originally from Santa Maria de los Lagos .

Hope this helps some ,

Welester

Principal Miners of Zacatecas and Fresnillo, 1799

Hi all,

Promised to send bits of details I find in important books...

I just posted a Word file titles "Principal Miners of Zacatecas and Fresnillo, 1799"

Contains list of miners and hacendados - with names of haciendas.

I checked the names of the owners of the listed mines in Zacatecas and Fresnillo circa 1799 and noticed there are a majority of surnames I have not seen in the records.  Were the majority of the mines owned by absentee owners living in Spain or other places?  This is an area I have not researched before but it would seem logical since Spain still owned Mexico during this time period.

Thank you for this file, Prima! It actually has proven helpful for my own search because it confirms there was indeed a Hacienda San Jose in the region(which I was having difficulty confirming). I'm going to commence research on the 2 listed owners and see where that takes me in my search for Aurelio Rivas.

Are there any other things like this that you've found? Perhaps administrators of the haciendas or something like that?

Hi,

I'll help anyone in the group that needs help uploading files to their
folder in the "files" area of the group. Contact me at
joseph@nuestrosranchos.org and we can discuss this off the list.

I don't mind helping anyone in the group. If you need to delete, update,
or add new files to your folder I'll be glad to help you. Yes if you
haven't tried to do this yourself I'd like for you to try but if after
you give it a try you want my help it is not a problem at all. If you
want detailed instructions on how to do this you can go to Arturos great
users guide (http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/14123) and look at page
11 in the English version and page 12 of the Spanish version and it
gives you detailed instructions on how to upload files to your your folder.

Most likely you already have a folder created in the files area. Please
DO NOT create a new folder for files you try to upload there but rather
upload your files to your existing folder. In the rare exception of
someone that doesn't have a folder please see the exisiting folder style
and try to follow that pattern for the sake of consistency and ease of use.

The announcement about Marge assisting me was mainly meant to let you
know if she contacts you for clarification on your information it is for
the purpose of updating your folders. Requests for help should be
directed to me. Thanks.

Nuestros Ranchos] Visiting Salt Lake City

Rick, I'm jealous already, how nice to be able to spend a couple of weeks doing research.

I will have the luxury of a few days only and most likely it will not be at Easter time but maybe the three of us can meet up. I can try to schedule my visit on the days that you and Maureen would be there next year. I hope it works out.

Alicia,

Last year I went for 5 days and I thought it was going to be enough time but
now I don't think I can get everything done in 5 days since the number of
records that I now need has duplicated. This is the only reason I plan on
spending two weeks there. Time flies when you're at the research center. Let
me know when you plan to go, it would be nice to meet up there. Please send
replies to rickrod.com@gmail.com Thanks!

Rick

Dear Alicia and Maureen, I'm also planning to visit SLC next year, maybe
during Easter week. I went last year during Easter and the very friendly

Dear Alicia and Rick:
You know I would love to meet with you, but the only reason I am making the trip is because my husband has a meeting in Reno, Nevada in June. Since we are in the area, we were going to plan on renting a car and driving to Salt Lake for a week to do some research. Sort of killing two birds with one stone. My date in June is not set yet. Now if for some reason the June date is canceled, I may still plan a trip out west to visit my sister for a while and then head up to Salt Lake. My schedule would be quite a bit more flexible. I will keep you two posted. Thank you for the offer.

Rocamonte

Someone inquired about a place known as Rocamonte. I personally have no knowledge of this place, so I went to the LINKS section of NUESTROS RANCHOS (it is part of the title banner). Once on the LINKS page I looked under GEOGRAFIC AND LOCALITY INFORMATION, and then to ZACATECAS MUNICIPALITIES. On this page there is a BUSCAR button (Find), and I was able to enter "Rocamonte". The only thing that came up was information related to Rocamonte was the following (and this appears to NOT be a settlement) in the municipality of Concepcion de Oro:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/Rg/frameset_rhelps.asp?Page=./re…
h/type/Form.asp&ActiveTab=Type

2.00 pm.
Si quieres mas información estoy a tus órdenes

Hola Patty----

Estoy a tus órdenes.
Atte.

Treminos from Saltillo and Viesca, Coahuila

Hello, All!

I am looking for further information on these Treminos. Does anyone recognize them?

I am not finding much information on them. Although I have found information saying that they were from Saltillo, Coahuila they seem to have many connections to Zacatecas. Can anyone help? The family says they were from Saltillo.

Elvira,

There is a place in Zacatecas called Cienega de Rocamontes. It is up near the border of Coahuila, in the part of Zacatecas that lies between the states of Durango and Tamaulipas. The road going north from Cienega de Rocamontes leads directly to Saltillo in Coahuila.

which list the Muncipeos & Localidades throughout Mexico. The site is great, which also lists rancho's that no longer exist.
Lots of luck in your pursuit.

Visiting Salt Lake City Spring of 2009

Thanks Maureen,

Just thought it would be nice to meet up with some Ranchos members but it will be tough to get it to coincide with everyone's busy schedules. I just know that I want to go sometime in the spring and who knows, it may end up being a spur of the moment two or three day trip for me.
