HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope your new year will be filled with rewarding family research.
I was going through some old (really OLD) email messages this morning - the "Ancestry.com" newsletter that I had been ignoring for quite some time, and came across a reference to this site:

Distrito Federal, Mexico Civil Record translation

Happy Holidays to all:

I have a civil marriage record from Distrito Federal, Mexico dated 07 Jan 1917 and I am unable to translate two statements. “En la casa no 94 de la oclava del Reloj el Sr Pbro D.J. Guadalupe Chavez, V.P. asistio a siete de enero de mil novecientos diecisiete al matrimonio que in extremis (or fue in extremis) contrajeron Juan Breña y Ma Gonzalez fueron testigos Francisco y Ana Breña “

Hey Anna I think it is misspelled I think it is "en la Octava del Reloj", I
have seen it before, they used to refer at the time like that back then, it
means "At the Eight on the Clock" (8:00 O'Clock) and in extremis is a latin
phrase , that means "in the furthest reaches" or "at the point of death",
generally referring to grave or exceptional circumstances.
Probably this weeding was in the partcipant's house and under extreme
circumstances maybe one of them or maybe both were very ill and the priest
had to celebrate the ceremony at the address..
Regarding the Callejon del indio address I have no idea I'll see what I can
find and let you know..

Regards...

Estimada Anita:

Saludos afectuosos,

Yes I concour with Victor, they might be talking about "La Calle del Reloj"
as weel. That is , as Victor quotes, a part in the currently called
"Republica Argentina" Street, by the position in the phrase is not very
clear if they are still reffering to the location or the time, I think you
should send a copy of the "Acta" to the group maybe we can make that clear
just by reading it..

Dear Francisco, thanks for your input, this makes more sense as he died in 1917 according to her later statement. Anita

Mora Family from Ocotlan, Jalisco

I am wondering if anybody has any ties to the Mora family from Ocotlan. I have Jose Antonio Mora born in Ocotlan 1806. Parents were Rafael Mora and Gertrudis Baca. I found a Jose Rafael Mora born in 1786 in Ocotlan, Jalisco, but I haven't been able to confirm if it's the correct Jose Rafael Mora. I was wondering if any members have any Mora line tying into the southern end of Jalisco. Jose Antonio Mora married Trinidad Villaroel of Atotonilco el alto, Jalisco in 1826 in Ocotlan. Please if anyone has any information would they reply it would be greatly appreciated.

Hola Daniel

Saludos.

Rubén,

Luisa Lozano González (aka Luisa de Rodas) was baptized at the parish church in Aguascalientes on 27 Dec 1645. Her godparents were Juan de Araisa y Medina and Luisa the Araisa (his daughter) both local residents of Aguascalientes. She was not baptized in Tepatitlán. Incidentally, according to reliable Catholic church authorities in Aguascalientes, the "Parroquia de la Asunción" has never been known as "Parroquia del Sagrario". Apparently, the misunderstanding originated in the 1960s when the books were microfilmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I plan to post some information on this confusing subject sometime next year. Luisa Lozano was named Luisa after her maternal grandmother Luisa de Rodas, and in some documents she appears under her grandmother's name.

Francisco Casillas Cabrera married Luisa Lozano in Aguascalientes on 1 May 1669. It was customary in those days to hold the wedding at the bride's hometown. Luisa's parents were Jacinto Lozano and Juana González de Rubalcava. Her paternal grandparents Cristóbal Lozano and María de Isla, and her maternal grandparents Fulgencio González de Rubalcava and Luisa de Rodas.

Francisco's parents were Francisco Casillas Cabrera and María González de Hermosillo, who married in Jalostotitlán ca. 1635 according to some records. His paternal grandparents were Francisco Casillas Cabrera and Francisca Gutiérrez de Escobar, and his maternal grandparents Juan González de Hermosillo and Anna Gutiérrez Rubio (aka Anna González Florida), the latter married in Jalostotitlán ca. 1614.

I was thinking aloud when I wrote "Juan de Araisa y Medina and Luisa the Araisa" instead of "Juan de Araisa y Medina and Luisa de Araisa" in my previous email. Sorry. If anyone is interested, I can post a Spanish version of my message.

Hola compañeros, desde hace varios días que se encuentra en el foro discuciones e información sobre personas de apellido Quezada; y hoy me di a la tarea de buscar a todas las personas Quezada que tengo en mi base de datos y que no les he podido seguir la línea.

I just learned the www.familytreedna.com has a December sale on at least some of their test kits when purchased through one of the projects (you can generally fit yourself into one of the posted projects. There is a Mexican Surname Project and lots of specific surname and geographic projects.) The Y-DNA37w/ mtDNAPlus kit is $199 (I paid over $300), and the Y-67DNAw/mtDNAPlus kit is $308. I don't know what the latter one was before, but that represents a good savings. I only wish I had known about their apparently traditional December-only sales.

John Gonzalez 1gnzlz@verizon.net.

Before you take advantage of the "sale" mentioned in the message below, I
suggest you look into getting your DNA analyzed by other labs for a more
reasonable cost.
I paid $ 129 for a 37 marker Y-DNA analysis from GeneTree, it could be $149
by now, but that is still a bargain compared with other labs.

I belong to Haplogroup E--M96, Subgroup : E1b1b1-M35. It is the third most
frequent haplogroup in Europe.

I really recommend dna testing for anyone that is serious.

Casillas- R1b Celtic
Alvarez = I1a Viking/nordic
Ramirez= J2f1 Adriatic

Also native maternal D

One pitfall not fall into is for those of you that get a J with hits in the Jewish groups, the percentage chance of you being Jewish with a cohen modal group is very very low. Check Wikipedia for an incredible explanation to the percentage changes. So don't trade in those sombreros for a yamaca! Most likely you are a true Latino of Roman or Medittereanena descent.

My Romero's are J2b1 from Tepatitlan de Morelos, Jalisco. No matches
yet. It will interesting to see if our line can be traced back to
either Greece, Iran, or the Converso's of Spain. I haven't
researched prior to 1820 in Tepatitlan yet. It's slow going when you
don't read or speak Spanish.

Hello Cristobal, I have not ordered the marriage record for Antonio Quesada & Anna Maria Aguilera as of yet. This is as far as I have gone on the Quesada line. It it possible that Antonio's parents are Antonio Quesada and Ana Maria Chavez. I will update you if I get a match with your information.

FolkTales-Spirit of Giving

New Group Rule

I haven't talked about this and I don't believe it has been addressed by
others. Please do not invite the nuestrosranchos.org group members
either as a whole (via the email discussion groups) or individually

updated file

I've just updated my file on Rootsweb.com. Most of the research in for the district of Jerez Zacatecas but there is also research from Tamazula and Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman Jalisco and then to Michoacan in the 1780's and earlier. The file is too large to post on Nuestros since there are abt 59,000 names. I hope there is something of interest there for many of you researching those areas.

Free Heraldry Book

Hi,

I have this book on Heraldry by Stefan Oliver, "An Introduction to
Heraldry." It doesn't really talk about our genealogy and I'm not really
into Heraldry so I thought I'd give it away to a nuestrosranchos.org

Hi Joseph,

Thank you for your kind offer. The book looks interesting to those
of us who not only descend from Spain, but from England and France
and other countries, too. If anything will bring us out of the
woodwork, it is something useful for free. Please put me down for
number 361.

Have a great holiday. You're certainly in the spirit already.

records for San Pedro Piedra Gorda, Cuauhtemoc, Zacatecas.

I've been asked to help someone find family from San Pedro Piedra Gorda, Cuauhtemoc, Zacatecas and I'm not familiar with it at all, any suggestions where it's located or if there are films from there? They are searching for their grandfather Carlos Vasquez, born abt 1901, mother is Juana Saucedo. That's all the information they have. The rest of this family is from Jerez Zacatecas Mexico.

Hi Linda, Cuauhtémoc is really close, east of Jérez and just north of Aguascalientes.
Its possible their ancestors traveled from there to Jérez back and forth, they're pretty close
to each other. As for films it seems people from Cuaté went to San Pedro to get baptized
there are only 2 civil registration films which I strongly recomend them to view first since its usually the easiest to read

As a young man Carlos Vasquez worked in the mines at La Mina Del Bote, Compania La Penoles in Zacatecas, Zacatecas Mexico.
Carlos Vasquez also worked as a servant for the Governor of Zacatecas, possibly in Zacatecas, Zacatecas Mexico.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

On the marriage record have you checked to see if there is a marriage information record for that year?  That may give you even more information. Also is there a civil birth registration record instead of a baptism record, that sometimes gives you even more information with ages and occupations of parents and names of grandparents also.

Instead, they suggested to visit my closest Family Research Center, and extract
the info directly from the microfilm. Unfortunately, the center closest to me
does not have these films, so I need your help. These are the two records:

1)Marriage: Antonio de Aranda with Antonia Martin de Sotomaior (Sotomayor) 27
jul 1704, Cienega de Mata, Ojuelos, Jalisco. M602325 0641015

2)Christening: Lorenza Moran Montoya. Parents, Juan Moran and Juana Montoia
(Montoya). 20 agosto 1694. El Sagrario, Aguascalientes. C604763 0299423

This records could prove extremely useful, because I have reached a wall with
both families and I hope to find additional information in these records to
continue my research. For record 1, I hope the names of the parents of bride and
groom to be listed, but if they are not, at least the names of the
'Padrinos'.

For record 2, I am after the names of the grandparents (unlikely to be listed,
but they might) or at least the names of the padrinos. These sometimes are
extremely useful.

Hope someone can help getting this info. Perhaps someone has additional
information on these two families.

Thanks

Jaime

Erlinda,
Thanks for your suggestions. Regarding the first suggestion, I must confess that I am not familiar with what kind of information would be
available in the 'marriage information record' or how to go about requesting this info. Regarding the second suggestion, no civil birth registration
would be availabe for that time. My understanding, is that civil registration in Mexico began with the "Leyes de Reforma" when Church and
State formally separated (1859-1860) during Benito Juarez's administration.

Thanks

Jaime

Jaime,

I have the microfilm with the baptismal record of Lorenza Morán Montoya on
permanent loan (LDS Film No. 0299423) and will look it up later this week.
Lorenza's parents Juan Morán and Juana de Montoya were married 14 April 1690
at "Parroquia de la Asunción" in Aguascalientes (LDS Film No. 0299823). The
parents of Juan Morán are listed as Domingo Morán and Antonia Martínez
Calvillo (aka Antonia López Calvillo). Apparently Juana de Montoya was a
"mestiza" originally from the Real y Minas de Guanajuato, Gto. Mexico. I
don't have any information about her parents, but will double check her
marriage record and let you know what it says.

Jaime,

Below is the marriage record of Juan Moran and Juana de Montoya. The
transcription is verbatim, i.e. in ancient Spanish language and with many
grammatical errors made by the priest. I know you're bilingual, so no
translation should be needed.

The baptismal record of Lorenza Moran reads as follows:

I have scans of the actual records which I can email directly to you if
you're interested. Notice that Lorenza's father was "español" and her
mother "mestiza". When she was born Lorenza was considered "española"
although in reality she was probably "castisa".

Let me know if you have any questions.

Macias and Limon in Teocaltiche

Rudy and Esperanza,

Congratulations on the discovery of your connection, the excitement is palpable and there's nothing like it, to finally make that familial connection.

That's what brings us to this group, the hope that we'll learn about ourselves by learning about our ancestors, and if in the process we make a connection with a family member, it's a homerun.

I have a Macias line in Los Altos de Jalisco starting in La Barca, and I have a Margarita Macias born abt 1853. Her parents were Geronimo Macias and Eduviges Cervantes; paternal granparents were Juan Antonio Macias and Juana Paula Covarrubias; maternal granparents were Miguel Cervantes and Ana Maria Zuñiga. I wonder if my Macias line connects with yours or have heared about my ancestors during your investigations...... Mi Margarita Macias was married to Jose Refugio Valdivia, but I have not found that reccord yet.

Good evening Allesandro,

I checked my database and I do not have any matches with the names you have mentioned. The only match I have is the name Margarita Macias who was born in 1849 to Silvestre Macias and Vicenta Luera. As I progress in my research I will let you know if we connect!

I need help with "braceros"

Hello all!

My father was a "bracero" (laborer contracted in a group). I think "bracero" term refers to "brazo" equal to "arm" for labor or work in the U. S. during, but not exclusivly, World War II and Korea War.

Not really.

"Brasero" (with "S"). also know as "anafe" (not "anafre"), is the portable
BBQ you mention. And the word comes from "brasa" (coal ash still burning)

"Bracero" (with "C") comes from "brazo" (arm) and refers to the physical
force of the "jornaleros" (immigrant worker pay by labor day, or "jornal").

Yes, "brazo" (arm) makes sense. Here in the United States such workers were called "hands", as in ranch hand, someone who did the physical work on ranches.

Lester:

An useful link for all Spanish doubts is the "Diccionario de la Real
Academia de la Lengua Española", the highest authority in the Spanish
language: www.rae.es

New Member Introduction for Rudy Munoz

Good Evening,

I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself to the group. I have just recently begun to research my family roots. I am new to this so please be patient with me until I get up to speed with all of you!!! It has been a difficult task obtaining famly information since most of the family with the key information has passed on. The branch I am currently focusing on is for my Paternal Munoz & Macias lineage. My Grandfathers name was Jose Gutierrez Munoz who was born in Tlachichila, Zacatecas in 1897. My grandfathers parents names were Magdaleno Munoz & Nolberta Gutierrez. The only other info I have on this line is the name of my gg grandfather Rafael Gutierrez. From what I am told Rafael had two wives. However, no one remembers their names! Any help with this branch would be very welcome. Nolberta Gutierrez had siblings by the names of: Margarita, Thomasa, Basilia & Rafael. Magdaleno Munoz had only one sister by the name of Diega who married a Santellan.

Hello Rudy,
I just started my own genealogy research. I have found an ancestor by the name of Guillermo Estrada Limon born 1834 in Teocaltiche to Timoteo Limon and Tiburcia Estrada. Guilllermo Limon married Margarita Macias in 1862 also in Teocaltiche. They had a son by the name of Sabino but I have no record of him. I only know that he married Andrea Esparza who I also have no record of.

I am looking for any information and records that may help me fill in the connections for the Limon, Macias, and Estrada family in Teocaltiche.

Finally! I believe I have a hit with someone in the group! Yes Esperanza, I do have information on this line to share with you. Your Timoteo Limon was brother to my GGG Grandfather Victor Limon. Timoteo's and Victor's Parents were Jose Carlos Limon & Maria Gertrudis. I believe Maria Gertrudis was a Quesada. I still have not hit the birth records for this line but do have a copy of the Marriage record of Jose Limon and Maria Gertrudis Quesada to share with you if you like. In addition, Tiburcia Estrada is also in my direct family line. Her parents were my GGGGrandparents Jose Nicolas Estrada and Maria Encarnacion Chavez. I do not have any marriage info on these grandparents yet. I too am also new to this. I am willing to help you out with whatever I can. Let me know!

Hello Rudy,

I am not certain but I found someone that I believed that it could be your grandfather on the pilot family search site:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/#placeId=1927078;mothe…

I know its not the same date but many times you discover that are family member was wrong, for example my grandmother, it was said she was born in 1899 and in reality in the records she was born in 1894. Also besides that sometimes LDS site will mispell names or also many of our family members in the 1800's would have Jose or Maria in front of everyones name. I found many members of my family just by putting these names infront.

Hello Rudy, I can help you alot on your Macías, Pedrosa, Esparza, Estrada, Calvillo
These families except Calvillo, Estrada I descend from. Many other members do descend from the Esparza, I believe I'm the only one descending from the Pedrosa need to check. And
now you too descend from the Pedrosa. The following may help.

Los Altos and Aguas-Old Spaniard Usage

The Macías family is de Macías y Valadés
The Estrada- de Estrada y Bocanegra
The Calvillo- Martínez de Calvillo (Owners of La Hacienda de San Nicolás)
The Esparza- Ruiz de Esparza
The Pedrosa-de la Pedrosa y Alba

These are the actual last names us Spaniards used for the Colonial Period of New
Spain, There are families that still use this system today, but most have
shorten to Macías, Estrada, Calvillo, Esparza, Pedrosa due to some law of Spain
I read on Wikipedia, that prohibited non Criollos to use original form, not sure thought
exactly why? Many have thought is was about Lasiness and or custom to shorten it
but this is inaccurate since Spaniards are SOOOO PROUD, (according to my Grndfther)
they would have never dared to shorten their names unless the King decreed.

Hi Irene! We are related several times, I descend from Nicolás Macías' other 3 children not Pedro, so we share Nicolás, we are also related throught the obvious Esparza and Romos! I descend from Esparza about 8 times and Romo 5 times. So were related about 16 times! It's funny how our families managed to inbreed for centuries! I also noticied you did not include Nicolás' father;
his name was Blas de Macías y Valadés, the mother is uknown. -Hope this helps you.

I need help with a name.
A marriage record gives the name of the bride but it is not clear what
is the surname and what is part of the given name. I have this problem
a lot, and the context of the record doesn't help.

This example is
Josepha Flores de la Torre y Romero.
The time period is 1747 and she was married in Aguascalientes and was
born in Teocaltiche (Jalisco) about 1731. Her father was just listed
as Antonio, so that doesn't help much. Her mother's name is Bolañes.

Does anyone recognize the surname or can anyone give any tips on how
to distinguish where the given name ends and the surname begins. Or does
anyone have any wisdom to impart about naming conventions in the early
1700's.

Hello Stuart,

Compounded surnames were very common during colonial times in Mexico and
throughout Latin America. Flores de la Torre is a good example. This
surname started when Alférez Real D. Hernán Flores, a native of Salamanca,
married Doña María Alvarez de la Torre. He was a "Conquistador de la Nueva
Galicia" and one of the founders of Guadalajara. The family settled in
Zacatecas, where Hernán Flores was granted the "Encomienda de Juchipila" by
the Real Audiencia de Guadalajara. The second Encomendero de Juchipila was
his son Diego Flores de la Torre, born ca. 1540 in Juchipila. He married
Doña Angela de Velasco y Figueroa ca. 1555 in Mexico City and had ten
children: Diego, Hernán, Ana, Francisca, Angela, María, Catalina, Isabel,
Francisco and Elena, all born during the second half of the 16th century.
Their son Diego was the third Encomendero de Juchipila. He married Beatriz
de Anda Altamirano. By the late 16th century there were many descendants of
the Alférez Real Hernán Flores living in the area. Incidentally, the town
of Bolaños is not far from Juchipila.

If you do a lot of genealogical and historical research of Aguascalientes,
Zacatecas and Altos de Jalisco you will become accustomed to the compounded
surnames of the region. Many books have been written about these families.
The most common compounded surnames from Aguascalientes are Ruiz de Esparza,
Romo de Vivar, López de Elizalde, Martínez de Sotomayor, Anda Altamirano,
Macías Valadez, Carrillo de Sandi, Flores de la Torre, etc. etc. There were
no rules for spelling these surnames in the 16th and 17th centuries, so you
will find many variations in both church and civil records. Some are simply
spelling errors, so be careful. For the sake of consistency, I prefer to
use the modern spelling in my database, but make notes of the spelling used
in the original documents.

Hope this helps.

Hello Sofia, Thank you for the info. I looked into it and determined that this is my grandfather. I have adjusted my information! I also found two other siblings that matched my information using the Search Pilot. I should have started with verifying my grandfathers' information first before trying to figure out who his grand parents were. Lesson learned! I also want to thank all of you who have responded to my introduction. Be patient with me. I will definitely be getting back to each and every one of you. I truly appreciate your responses.

Good Evening and welcome Rudy,

You and I may be related through various surnames, my family descends from Tlachichila, Nochistlan, Jalpa and Tabasco Zacatecas and from Aguascalientes, Ags.

I have about 4 Muños family lines. My primary surnames are Avelar (dad's surname), Olmos (mom's surname)

My father's surnames are: Avelar, Aguayo, Garcia, Muños, Muños, Ortega, Garcia, Gomez, Duran, Guerrero, Olmos, De-la Cruz. To date all but De La Cruz are from the Municipio de Nochistlan. The rancherias are Monte De Duranes, Sombreretillo, San Roque, Cerro de San Miguel, La Cienega. You might want to check your records to see what the names of the rancherias were. There's a reason why the name of Nuestros Ranchos, the ranchos lead you to your ancestors.

My paternal grandmother was Rebeca Aguayo, Muños, her parents were Antonio Aguayo and Gregoria Muños, however this is the line in which I have done very little research, therefore at this time I cannot provide much information.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] New Member Introduction for Rudy Munoz

Magdaleno Munoz had only one sister by the name of Diega who married
a Santellan.

I have had much better luck with my Macias lineage! This branch of the family seems to have resided in Villa Hidalgo, Teocaltiche, San Juan de los Lagos & Lagos de Moreno areas of Jalisco. I have also tracked down family records from Aguascalientes. The family names from this lineage are as follows: Macias, Olmos, Pedroza, Aguallo, Ruiz, Garcia, Estrada, Limon, Quesada, Calvillo, Luera, Villanueva, Chavez, Esparza, Aguilar and /or Avelar and Villavicensio. I am currently at the early 1800's with this branch.

I look forward to participating in your discussions. I have learned a great deal from your recent discussions regarding research. Any input and corrections are always welcome.
