Colotlan, Jalisco films

Joseph Puentes,
I noticed that these films are shown in the FILMS section here at NuestrosRanchos and I was wondering if and when they would be available for us to research them here.

LDS films are only available for research in SLC and the multitude of
Family History Centers around the world. What you are seeing in the
films section is films I personally have on permanent hold at the family
history center I attend. If you have specific look ups I can have a look
every 2nd wednesday when I am a volunteer at my FHC.

Bosquejo Historico de Zacatecas by Elias Amador

Here is an inexpensive way to view this book at your local family history center. Fiche cost 15 cents per page and these two volumes are on 15 individual fiche sheets. I haven't read it but it looks like it goes into some detail about Zacatecas history. If you are interested order a copy for your family history center:

DNA Results

On Friday, I received the DNA results submitted by my brother to National Geographic. I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed.

I have been following the extraordinary PBS/National Geographic documentary on the DNA research of Spencer Wells, his theory is the world has evolved out of Africa.

Helyn,
I believe you are the one that said you were a bit disappointed in your brother's dna results.
I had mine done by FamilyTree DNA, and at first I, too was a bit disappointed. I expected more specific data. As I began to "learn" more about dna in general, that was all the information my results gave. With no matches, I understand no test will give me better results. I went into the dna consultants and it sounds really good, too good, so it is tempting for me.

However, I was elated that I was in one of the haplogroups that had colonized the Americas before Columbus and dated back at least 30,000 years!!

I wanted my son to get his done, but I went into IBERIAN PENINSULA DNA and found many names that have been tested and they all give only a general geographical location.I believe that is what his results would show also. My children's blood line include ENGLISH,
IRISH, FRENCH, and SPANISH.

It is quite interesting, though, the explanation they give as to how our ancestors got to the Iberian Peninsula. It's worth reading. Perhaps you will find your brother's dna there.

So, yes, I suppose we could all say, OUT OF AFRICA.

Regards,
Juanita

I have been following the extraordinary PBS/National Geographic documentary on the DNA research of Spencer Wells, his theory is the world has evolved out of Africa.

As per my report:
The results were Haplogroup R1b1c
The genetic markers that define your ancestral history reach back about 60,00 years of non-African men.

Then the trail ends in Western Europe. I suppose I was hoping the end of the trail would be more specific as Western Europe is such a large area. The report also states "Today, roughly 70 percent of the men in southern England belong to haplogroup R1b. In parts of Spain and Ireland, that number exceeds 90 percent.

I was planning on having my own DNA tested by National Geographic, but now I'm not so sure, if the results are going to be the same, out of Africa, then to Western Europe.

Yesterday, on the Semos Primos site, I read a fantastic story written by Larry Garza. I was intrigued by his findings and sent him an e-mail. Below is the response from Mr. Garza. I have checked out the site he used, and it appears to me more of what I'm looking to achieve.

Dear Helyn,
Thank you for your comments. We had comprehensive DNA testing done through DNA Consultants, Dr. Donald Yates. I chose them because they give a comprehensive analysis with wonderful historical explanation, from my research the best available. You can contact Dr. Donald Yates at www.dnaconsultants.com and look at the various testings they do. Tell him I sent you.

Well, at least now I have another option.

Hi Helyn,
At the very bottom of your NatGeo page there's a link that allows you to open a familytreedna.com free account (they did the actual DNA testing), There you can submit your results to several databases where you can compare your results to those of others, such as Mexican DNA, Iberic DNA and Yserch.org and maybe get more information regarding your ancestors, I do recommend this.
If you and your brother have the same mother, instead of sending your sample, familytreedna.com can test your brother's. The results should be identical, they can also be included in the Genographic Database, and it might be a little cheaper than ordering a new kit (plus you can take advantage of a $15 or so gift certificate if you decide to include your mtDNA results in some of the familytreedna databases which offers them before purchasing the test).
You never know, your mtDNA could be also European or you may find out it is Native American or something else.
I enclose a couple of links.

According to the Bible Adam and Eve pop around 4000 b.c. The interesting part is there isnt that much of a great migration during this time they stayed around their place of birth "Around" . Not until Abraham and Noah's time which I believe is the 8th 0r 9th Generationd descent from Adam at the time of the oTower of Babel thats where migrations start since all different languages come into affect from God. Noah's sons spread into Asia, Africa, Middle East and Europe

our European descent is

Tubal who arrived in modern day Germany whos descendants went to Spain "The VIsigoth Germanic Tribe"

Japeth arrived in the Caucus mts. in Russia (Son of Noah)

Noah who built the Ark

Daniel:

It is impossible for there to be as much genetic diversity as there is today had "Adam" lived only in 4000 b.c. If you look at the Genographic Project page, they place "Adam" (the common male ancestor of all human beings) at about 60,000 years ago in Africa, probably in modern day Ethiopia, where Omo I and Omo II were found.

https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/atlas.html

There are remnants of human settlement in the middle East that are at least 100,000 years old. Homo sapiens had made their way all the way to Australia via the Arabian Penninsula, India and Indonesia as early as 40,000 to 60,000 years ago.

Humans reached South America sometime between 20,000 and 30,000 years ago, so it is not possible that "Adam" lived only 4,000 years before Christ.

Remember all Mexicans have some european blood at least half and others full. That would be correct since Spain conquered Mexico everyone should trace their roots to at least Spain. The Spaniards came from Germany then from their the Span-Germans came from the Causcus mountains in Russia, hence the term Caucasian. Once you reach these mtns. Its all Bible Genealogy. I can trace my lineage back to Adam and Eve. I can spmewhat map what my lineage trail. I will send a map in jpg. sometime showing what I believe is my genetic trail. Of course all Bible genelogy goes back to Mesopatamia, Israel and Egypt and the Middle East. From their I believe Adam and Eve came from Africa. Since at one point it is said Africa was the greatest rainforest filled with trees and animals but then the Ice age hit and then it dried up. Until what we know is Africa. The Garden of Eden might be the Sahara Desert?

New researcher in Mexico

Hi

I am new to the group although I have been doing research for many years. I have been successful with my mothers European ancestry search, but I had no idea how to begin research for my family in Mexico. ( I do not speak Spanish as my father believed we should only speak English)

Comentarios

Comentario

It seems that you have a fair deal of information that simply needs to be verified and then you can begin searching records in Mexico.

My first suggestion would be to try to find the border crossing record for your grandfather (Salvador Bernal) and his mother Antonia Cano. Ancestry.com has a "pay for service" index of most Mexican border crossing records beginning in 1903. There are some members that have a subscription that may be willing to do a look up for you or you can go to a library that subcribes and use it there.

Once you find the border crossing record, if you are lucky it will list the person's place of birth and perhaps even his/her parents names.

Once you have verified the names of Antonia's parents and found the name of the Mexican municipality where she was born, you can begin searching in the LDS's IGI and VRI databases which have pretty good coverage for Mexican parish records. However, knowing where to look is key.

You may have to order some films and look for the marriage/baptism document manually. For the mid, late 1800s the parish records often have indices at the beginning of each book and often baptism records list grandparents' names which allow getting back multiple generations at a time.

http://www.familysearch.org
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=1082

Also look in the Files section of the site under Reference Materials... there are a couple of guides to doing genealogical research in Mexico. You will have to learn some basic Spanish to read records, but it is not daunting... and a bit of paleography, which becomes more important the further you go back in time as handwriting becomes harder and harder to read.

I was born in Mexico and lived there until I was about 10 years old. Later, as an adult, I lived in Mexico from 1970 to 1980 and during this period I lived in Sonora, but my work took me all the way from Tijuana to Mérida, form Mazatlán to Chihuahua, From Mexico City to Guadalajara, Monterrey, and many other places to numerous to mention.

In my constant travels and living in Sonora, I saw a lot of people that looked like they did not have a single drop of Spanish blood. People in Oaxaca, Yaquis in Sonora, and Tarahumara Indians in Chihuahua to name a few. I mention this because you made a blank statement that "everybody in Mexico had Spanish blood and can trace their ancestry back to Spain". There are quite a few areas in Mexico where the Natives never mixed with the Spaniards. I don't have the accurate figures, but I believe the population of Mexico is about 60% Mestizo, 30% Native American (Indian), 7% Caucasion (Spanish), and 3% other races.

John,

It is true that our Mexican heritage has too long ignored our many
heritages. While our Mexican nation idealizes our native inheritance, it also ignores
the many that live within the peripherals of the dominant society.

While it is true that we have inherited the legacy of our conquerors, it is
also true that we are more than "Spanish"...we represent the Diaspora of the
Chinese, African, and Jewish

(http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/feature/ethnic/ethnicindex.html) as well as countless of others such as Italians, Irish, Arabs, etc.

We are the conquerors, the conquered, and the remaining descendants of those
caught in the Diaspora. Sometimes what happens in genealogy is that we try
to prove or disprove our beliefs....and if we are looking for a direct
lineage to a recorded history.....well, you know the rest.

Chris, welcome to the Nuestros Ranchos Research group.

You brought back memories for me. My grandparents always told us to speak English, that we were Americans. They never guessed that loosing the language from the old country would one day hinder my search for our ancestors. They came stateside from Jerez Zacatecas in 1916 to escape the revolution when it hit their village.

In doing research I've learned Spanish and even went to Mexico for 30 days in 2003 with a Spanish speaking relative who was also helping me read records in Spanish from the Family History Center. I've learned more than I ever thought I would in 10 years of researching in Mexico through the Familysearch forum. My only advice to you is not to let the lack of speaking Spanish stop you in your search. The language translators online work great too as well as asking the group for help.

When I started doing reseach the stories started coming out. I found my grandfather was a bootlegger and had kidnapped my grandmother for marriage when her boyfriend kidnapped his girlfriend! After so many years it's now a funny story instead of a family secret.

Good luck in your search,
Linda Castanon-Long in Everett Wa.

My grandfather was Salvador Bernal born in Zaceteca Mexico in 1905. His mother (Antonia Cano b1881 in Mexico) brought him and his brother and sister to California, shortly after his birth. His father was Cresencio Bernal and there are many stories about him being a train robber. Antonia Cano's parents were Felipe Cano and Tirburcia Martinez. There is also references to the family having some French heritage through this line.
I do not have any other information on the family. I would appreciate any help as I have no idea where to start looking.

Some points made on this. Just had to put my two cents in as this subject intrigues me. The old Testament is made up of extensive genealogies. Adam was supposed to have lived 500 + years I believe. It seems these earlier men lived a long time and over time our life span decreased. It says in the Bible modern man's lifespan in 120 years. Just recently, I have heard some scientists say there is no reason why we cannot all live to 120. Hmmm. Also, we have changed calendar systems a few times and there is a debate on how many years b.c. that Adam was created.

Anyway there has long been a debate between science and religion. In a college Great Issues class, I studied this subject. If any one is interested, there are a couple of articles, one written by Galileo and the other by Albert Einstein that really debate the subject intelligently: They are "Letter to Madame Christina of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany" is Galileo and his take is that when there is a conflict between science and the Bible, it usually is because the Bible is interpreted incorrectly and the Bible never speaks an untruth. That among other things, it is an article worth reading. Einstein's is "Out of My Later Years" his chapter on Science and Religion. Einstein believed that science aids religion and no matter the findings of science, there is alway a place for religion. Anyway two great articles and a must read if you are interested in the subject.

Population of La Barca, Jalisco

What were the population estimates for La Barca, Jalisco in the 1800's, or for the state of Jalisco. I am interested to know how the population explosion of the past 30 years has led to such a lot of different people from other parts of the country.

Daniel:

The Garcia Cubas atlas of Mexico of 1858 is the most beautiful and comprehensive geographical works of Mexico from the 19th century. There is a two leaf compilation for each state which includes economic, demographic and geographic information around a color map of the state.

You can find the Jalico map from the atlas online at David Rumsey Digital Map Collection:

http://www.davidrumsey.com

Do a keyword search for Jalisco.

It lists the population of the canton of La Barca at 106,868 with the population of the municipality of La Barca within that canton at 52,747 and the population of Tepatitlan within that canton at 54,121.

I hope that helps.

I do know that the original Moras in los Altos married into the great Mendoza family. Juan de la Mora himself was also a Mendoza through his mother. (HE married his distant Mendoza cousin, very common). -Daniel

Ordering copies of documents through Salt Lake City

Due to the slow turn around time at Salt Lake for ordering microfilm. I have started to order the documents I need. It takes about 2 weeks to get the copies. I ordered 3 microfilmed rolls and now it's been over 2 months. They are running very far behind....I had heard about 6 months behind.

For those of you, who are impatient on waiting for microfilms. I usually go
to the FHL in Salt Lake once a month. If you would like, email me your
lookups, and I can do them.

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you, and I appreciate your offer as to looks-ups. But can you tell me, how do I go about checking to see if the film that I want searched, is in the library and not the vault ? Also are the copies to be received through email, if I decide to send you my request?

The way to tell, if a film is in the library or not. Is by looking in the
Library catalog. If it says FHL International, FHL USA, etc, it is in the
library. If it says vault, it is not in the library and needs to be ordered
into the library, that takes about 2 days for the film to the llibrary.

And on the lookups, that I do, I send a scanned copy by email. The libaray
has some digital scanners avaiable to make copies from the films. If I can't
use one of those scanners, I make a paper copy and then scan the paper copy
and sent that.

Follow up questions: When you do this, and fill out the form they send you, is it just like ordering rolls, or do they send you a photocopy of the individual original record you're trying to get? And how much does each request cost when you fill out the sheet they send you?

Ordering Microfilm & Slow turn around

Why is this taking so long? I also am awaiting a Roll of Microfilm, and
it is so far 2 months... Thank you Rose for informing us of this option.
I also like looking at the WHOLE film.

I have been told by church members that they are not concentrating on copying the microfilms so much, but are trying to get everything digitized. My cousin waited 6 months for a film he ordered in November, he finally received it about a week ago....I dare say that we may be all in the same boat. I did receive one film within two weeks, but probably due to the fact I had ordered it before. Let's just keep our fingers crossed....in the mean time I too am working on another book and ordering documents for my other cousin who has Aguascalientes relations...just got to keep busy.

Sylvia,

First grado of consanguinidad are brothers/sisters.
Second " " " " first cousins.
Third " " " " second cousins.

In Mexico, we don't have any of the "second cousin twice removed" stuff. In the matrix below, if you start off with the premise that Manuel is uncle to Martha and Ruben is uncle to Amelia, the same generational process continues. Amelia is aunt to David and Martha is aunt to Carlos. Amelia cannot cross down to David or Alex and call them cousins. They are diluted forms of nephews.

Manuel brothers Ruben

Amelia 1st cousins Martha

Carlos 2nd cousins David

Ruben 3rd cousins Alex

Can Someone Help Me Out?

Hi. My name is Irene Garcia Sandoval, and I joined NR about 3 months ago.

Due to family demands, I have not been as active as I intended to be, and have not been able to spend time at the NR website for a while. Last week I has some time and tried to log on and bring myself up-to-date, but could not get in. I've tried every possible password I could think of, but I must have used a very special one and now I can't remember it! I have sent off at least a couple of requests for help from the website, but have not gotten any response. If this is not the right place to try to get help, can someone out there let me know what I have to do to either get my password back or get a different one? Any help I can get will be deeply appreciated. MUCHAS GRACIAS.

Thank you, Jose Carlos.... I will try it again. I had already tried that prompt several times and got no response at all; but now I'm sorta remembering that there was a re-vamping of the site, right? Maybe that was causing my problems...? I'll let you know if it works this time. Thanks again.

at the home page there is a "forgot password?" prompt I think when you try to log on. It'll e-mail you the password.
