Hi Stephanie, I am Daniel Méndez del Camino, Welcome to our wonderful and hardworking group. I hope you'll enjoy being part of this family. I am familiar with some of your surnames in my research in Los Altos region. García de León is one almost all of has has connection to. I would say the easiest would be García and Hermosillo since they are very well documented families extending their genealogy as far as the 16th century. Most of the research is done for these families, you just need to connect to the "big tree" probably ca. 1690-1720 or so then you'll connect hopefully.

I've found some names maybe you have them or not. You may have notice the María on Josefa. It was custom for catholics in México to be baptized as José or María depending on gender then their "first name" and then middle name" followed by there compound surname, then at least in our family would put the last name of the ancestor if the baby was named after.

HAve you tried ordering the films for these children? Im sure they include their grandparents post-1812.

I also found one of their children marrying in México D.F. Their age difference is quite interesting; at least for my experience. I also did find your same record of Quirino's marriage in 1847. I think youll have to order that to find their parents.

Hi Juanita,
Yes, your daughter should have the same mtDNA as you, your mother,
grandmother, etc. all the way back to your "ancient" mother. MtDNA
is passed down from mother's to all their children. The daughters
then pass it down to their children. (Men do not pass down mtDNA)
There is the possibility of slight differences due to mutation and
heteroplasmy, but that is for another discussion.

As for a "European mother somewhere along the line," it depends on
what line you are referring to. If you are referring to your mtDNA
female line, it will be the same all along the line. Remember, your
mtDNA does NOT include any male Y-DNA or it's influences. Also, the
mtDNA tested for genealogical purposes is not all your DNA. The
parts normally tested for genetic genealogy are the Hypervariable
Regions, sometimes called the Control Region in scientific papers.
That region is much shorter, has no genes, and mutates more frequently.

If you are referring to the possibility of a "European mother"
somewhere in your father's line, it would not show up in his Y-DNA.
If your father's mother were European his mtDNA would show her
European mtDNA, since men have both Y-DNA and mtDNA. But only your
mother's mtDNA would be passed down to you, not your father's mtDNA
(and therefore not his mother's mtDNA).

If you had your mtDNA tested with FamilyTreeDNA, join a group that
matches your results. Also join the Newbie DNA list at DNA-
NEWBIE@yahoogroups.com. There are very knowledgeable people who will
answer your questions on this list.

Do you know if there is a test that can show anything having to do with any male line, may it be threw your mother or father, being a female?

Linda,
I'm looking at several sites like Nt Geo., Human Genetics.com, etc. Needless to say, anything having to do with DNA is most, most interesting and QUITE intriguing, and acutally difficult for the average Jane/Joe to understand no matter how "easy" it is put. There are many technical terms that are just foreign to the average Jane/Joe . I think I was just trying to get a a quick general answer.

However, the more you read on the subject the more you begin to "understand" some of it. Some sites have pages and pages of explanations/information. I think I have the "basic" idea pertaining to my results. I was sorry to learn that I have no matches now.
,
Thanks for anyinformation you give me.

To test for the male line (y-chromosome), a male must be tested. The test could be done on your brother, father, uncle or sons of your uncles. Jan

Juanita,

What were your mtDNA test results? Plus what are the surnames that appear in your direct mtDNA ancestry?

My husband's mtDNA test results will be ready on about May 26th...
Surnames that appear in his direct line mtDNA are Perez, Andrada, Aguirre, Placencia, Lara Rodrigues, Rodrigues.
His YDNA tested out as Native American...

Hi, Pat,
Glad to share my results with you and actually the world if that would give me more information.

Unfortunately, my known mothers only go back to my great-grandmother. That's like yesterday. I have not been able to get beyond her. Her death records does not show her parents, so "the buck stops there", so to speak.

My mother's maiden name is TAMAYO, my grandmother's is GARCIA and my great-grandmohter's is either FLORES, BALDONADO or MALDONADO, from NE MEXICO.

As is well known, sometimes the test will raise more questions than it will give answers, and while I was not 100% satisfied, I am content with the findings. The reason I am not 100% satisfied is because my dna does not show a specific group/tribe, if you will; I would have been content even if I had tested APACHE! I know of some people whose dna has taken them directly to a specific group and specific geographical region.

So, my results were: I am in HAPLOGROUP A, one of the 4 groups that date back to PRE-COLUMBIAN times in the AMERICAS! Experts estimate that this group A "originated"
in EASTERN EURASIA . It is still found there and THROUGOUT the AMERICAS. THIS GROUP WAS PRESENT IN THE POPULATIONS THAT INITIALLY COLONIZED THE PRE-
COLUMBIAN AMERICAS AND, AND, DATES TO AT LEAST 30 THOUSAND YEARS!!!

On the flip side:

No matches were found for me, meaning I believe that no female descendant of all those hundreds and hundreds of mothers have tested?
I'm submitting my results to other sites, so who knows? Will keep you posted.

Incidently, I got a notice/invitation from the Gen.Soc. of Norte de Mexico to participate in a
"mouth wash" - GENETIRINSE test - FREE. You send in 4 generations - they provide the form on their site and send it in. It does take long to get the results about 6 months.
I tried sending it to Joseph for his comment but I don;'t think it got through.

Regards,
Juanita

Thank you for replying to my question about your mtDNA test results... It is so true that many times, test results end in more questions than answers.

As soon as my husband's mtDNA test results are received I will post them on NR, until then, thank you...

Thank you Jan!
I found a DNA test on the web that is called Autosomal-DNA. Supposibly a female can take this test if she has no males in her family. Has anyone heard of this test and if so, how much info can it give you to know about your father's line?

Hi Sofia,

For a female to trace her male line, she must enlist the help of a
male descendant of her father. That means she must test either her
brother, her brother's son. She can also test her father's brother
or her father's brother's son (her male cousin on her father's
side). My brother was kind enough to submit his Y-DNA for my research.

OK. I want to make sure I understand this. I have not quite looked into
this but have been curious. I am an only child (female) of my father whom
died many years ago. I never knew anyone from my father's family; he lost
contact with them as a teenager. There is a slim chance I will ever find
them. From this am I to gather that there is NO DNA test that I can take
that will help in my father's genealogy?

Hello Ann,

With my questions that I have asked here and the ones I asked Family Tree DNA the responce is "no". We cannot trace our father's line if there is no male.

Sophia,

When considering a genetic test to learn about your ancestral past, do this: think about the fan you can make showing all your ancestors as you know them.

The fan begins with you as one point. Then it becomes two for your parents, then four for your grandparents, eight for your great-grandparents, 16, 32, 64, etc. If you are lucky enough to have an ancestor fan with 64 end points, then you probably noticed that these people are not the same by race or place of origin. Some may come from Europe: Spain, England, etc. Some may come from the Americas. Some may come from Africa, or Asia.

So suppose you really have 64 points. Suppose you count & 20% of them come from the Americas, 10% from Africa, 10% from Asia & the rest, 60%, from Europe. Then suppose that of the European ancestors, half are from Spain. So you are a mosaic & that’s exciting. You can do an autosomal DNA test to get results like this. There are several companies. They can give you information because they have done thousands of tests & have a very large database.

There is nothing in your DNA that tells about place of origin, but you can compare your DNA with people in a specific location & look for similarities. That’s where the database comes in.

But now go back to the fan. If you are female, start with yourself, then move to your mother, then to her mother, then to her mother, etc until you get to the end of the female line, as you know it. Because of a lucky accident of biology, you & all of these women have some DNA that is exactly the same. This is not autosomal, it is mitochondrial DNA & it passes unchanged from mother to children. So if you do a test for your mDNA & put it in a mDNA database, you can see where that specific piece of DNA apparently came from.

Now suppose your mDNA came from Asia, but when you look at your fan, or at your autosomal DNA test, you see that you are only 10% Asian. That’s it—you are only 10% Asian—it just so happens that one of your Asian ancestors was part of your female line. So you know something interesting, but it doesn’t define what you are entirely. It is just a part, in fact a very small part.

The same is true of the male line that can be followed by the y-chromosome test. It gives you only one point on the fan. I think that the male-line test is interesting because males keep their names & if your name is Jones you can see where the original Jones came from. But remember that he is only one point on your ancestor fan.

Hi Ann,

Sophia is correct that there is no Genealogical DNA test a female can
take to trace her male line. The DNA used for Genealogical purposes
is too specific as to the sex of the individual. You can have a
complete autosomal DNA test run, but I'm not sure if it will tell you
what you want to know. It is very expensive and the results will
include medical information. It is generally not done for
genealogy. Most Y-DNA and mtDNA testing is done to aid in tracing a
family line. It won't tell you who your parents are but it will tell
you where your ancient family was. It is used to help differentiate
between different family lines of people with the same names. It can
also tell if your DNA does not fit into the family line you thought
you fit into. It is deep ancestry research that needs a good paper
trail as a foundation for genealogy research. It's not the "end all"
in researching your genealogy.

I understand your frustration in not being able to add DNA to your
box of research tools. I had the same problem in trying to find my
mother's male line. After a few years of looking, I found the son of
her father's brother who agreed to test for me. He is my first
cousin once removed. My mother's father's Haplogroup is R1b1b2, a
European group so common that it is constantly being refined to help
differentiate between different groups. Each refinement means
additional tests at additional cost.

My father's Haplogroup is uncommon J2b1b and I have not found a match
outside of my family. It was nice to learn my father's ancestors came
up through the "fertile crescent", through Turkey and Greece and
probably on to Spain before settling in Mexico. His Haplogroup is
common in the middle East and around the Mediterranean. I have been
able to trace his family on paper back to the early 1800's, all
having been born in Tepatitlan. Having his DNA tested gave me more
questions than answers. It is all very interesting, but won't be
important until I can trace my family back to Spain and before. If I
could find another Romero with the same Y-DNA we would probably be
related.

Linda

Jan,

Thank you again!
I did my mtDNA but was curious about the male line on my mother's side and there migration to Mexico, and I wanted to learn more of my father, but there are no males around to do the test.
I was told by Family Tree DNA that the Autosomal DNA test was mainly for finding out if your father is your father or between brothers and sisters, but if I understand you correctly, I could find out something.
It is exciting, especially when you discover something which you did not exspect, which happened to me.

I'm only speculating as to the meaning of "mouth wash" but I know that
the DNA sample is taken by using a mouth wash.

I'm pretty sure you just take this mouth wash and swish it around in
your mouth rather vigorously and then spit the mix back into the
container which now has your DNA in it.

another style of the test is:

You have a little stick with these plastic teeth (it looks real
harmless) and you scratch your cheek and insert the scrapper end into a
test tube and send it back to the lab.

If you send a message to the list and do not see it on the front page of the website, it is because the site identified it as a response to a previous message and posted it as a comment to that earlier message (which likely no longer appears on the front page).

If you are starting a new thread of conversation, it is imerative that you create a new message (and not reply to another message) and put a descriptive subject line, otherwise it will get lumped with others... for example, there is a 40-some odd thread of messages with no subject line, although every one of those messages is on a different topic...

You are correct that all of the records that used to be on AER are now accessible through PARES. The system is actually much more functional than the old one. What is the exact problem you are having?

I think the search you are doing is not going to give you any results. The Casa de Contratacion only kept track of people migrating to the Americas through the 1700s. By the mid-1800s Mexico was an independent country and therefore Spanish authorities had no control over who could migrate there. I know that for later years there are immigration records at Archivo General de la Nacion (in Mexico City) which has some records online as well, but the mid-1800s may be a lacuna in terms of available immigration records.

First I want to commend you on your initiative on writing your bishop about this topic which is so important to so many of us. Your letter is very well written and addresses the salient issues.

It appears that Rev. Diskin does not address your concerns. I think that is the Catholic Church is going to cut off access to LDS institutions to film their records, they should concurrently make a commitment to preserve those records themselves and a commitment to make records accessible to those of us directly connected to the people in those records and who want to use them for historical and genealogical purposes.

Yo. Tomas Alejandro Villegas Gomez, Mi Padre: Tomas Villegas Gtz.,
Mi Abuelo: Francisco Villegas Navarro, mis Bisabuelos: Tomas Villegas
Flores y Paula Navarro Franco, Mis Tatarabuelos: Jose Felix Navarro
Bandin y Guillerma Franco Gomez, Mis 4tos. Abuelos: Jose Manuel

Jose Bandin de Castro de la Helgera y Ma. Josefa Alvarez Tostado
Gonzalez, mis 6tos. Abuelos: Francisco Bandin de Castro y Juana
Micaela de la Helgera Fernandez de Palos, Mis 7mos. Abuelos:

saus libros y obra completa.

Alex.

Comentario

Saludos.Jorge Luis Ramírez Gómez.

This is for experts on DNA out there:

I just had my mtDNA done. If my daughter had hers done, would the results be exactly the same?

If my "ancient" mother was a Native American, is there a chance that through all those hundreds of years there would have been a EUROPEAN mother somewhere along the line?

Thanks!

It has been awhile since I have read up on the subject  but your daughter also has her fathers mitochondrial so how exact I couldn't say but you may want to try Brian Sykes web site he has been very involved in historic DNA research you might get lucky and the answer will be on his web site vs having to obtain one of his books. www. oxfordancestors.com

Actually, mitochondrial DNA only comes from the mother. So a mother and a
daughter would have the exact same mDNA, unless there is some sort of
mutation, which is rare. Any sons would also have only the mother's
mitochondrial DNA.

Other kinds of DNA are mixed up from the mother and the father. That's why
mitochondrial DNA is so useful for genealogy.

Hola Ricardo,

Bienvenido a Nuestros Ranchos. Aquí vas a encontrar a muchas personas

To Juanita, Connie Dominguez and other members,

The Montejano book about which you are inquiring is authored by Maria de la
Luz Montejano Hilton, published by her in 1999, and titled "Sagrada Mitra

It is an 803-page 9" x 12" soft-cover book, written in Spanish, that as I
recall synthesizes some 2 to 3 thousands of matrimonial 'appeals' and
'dispensations' sought from the Nueva Galicia ecclesiastical court during
that 3-century time period. It also contains an extremely helpful 204-page
index of the names of the persons reflected/mentioned in all of the
proceedings.

EXAMPLE, (Case Number 720):

Jalostotitlan, Jal.

Veronica,

I have to agree with Efrain on buying this book. If you plan on extensive research for this area and know many families are connected, you might want to purchase.

I purchased it ($150) because I was trying to re-create all the early Aguas families - not just my personal lines. Although most of the entries in the book are dated late 17th & early 18th centuries, they describe relationships up to 4 or 5 generations back. This was very important to me. Also, at the time, I was helping Jose Luis Rodriguez with the Aguascalientes info for his book. It made more sense to purchase.

Otherwise, for limited use, e.g. for work on just personal lines, I would probably just borrow.

Hope this helps,

Connie Dominguez

Saludos.
Jorge Luis Ramírez Gómez.

Irma:

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I can surely see how many people would find LDS practices offensive. In fact, I have had some of my relatives become upset at me for using LDS resources and donating a copy of my book with my research to the Family History Library because they were angry that their ancestors might be baptized by LDS.

You state that these records were sacramental records plain and simple, but I don't agree that it is that simple. Under Spanish rule, there was no freedom of religion and as such all marriages and baptisms had to be performed by the Catholic Church. The Spanish Crown gave the Church the duty and monopoly on recording births (through baptisms), marriages and deaths. All of these records were considered official records for government and juridical purposes. Thus in effect they were civil registration. It was not until Independence and the separation of Church and State that a separate civil registry was established because until then people had no choice to baptize their children anywhere else or to get married anywhere else.

Regardless, I could see if the Church had some policy about making such records available for historical and genealogical research. However, my experience in trying to access these records directly at parrishes has been met mostly with an unwillingness to help or sometimes with outright hostility. I know of very valuable records from the 1600s in Jerez and Colotlan that have not been filmed and are already in poor condition and the parrishes are doing nothing to preserve them. It is sad.

Asunto: Re: [Nuestros Ranchos] The Pope & LDS

As far as the Catholic Church records that many of us research, they are
records of religious Sacraments plain and simple (Baptism, Confirmation,
Marriage, Death--last rites) received by individuals, and were not
government or civil records--these came later. Even the Census records
I have run across, list whether the individual received Communion. Lets
remember that such records of sacraments be kept was mandated by the
Catholic Church and not the crown therefore these were not government
records. Our ancestors went to the Catholic Church to receive their
Sacraments. When our ancestors had their children baptized, it was
because they wanted them to be members of the Catholic community. When
a priest was called for a dying person, it was to receive his/her last
rites.
Although Jose Carlos made his comment in a tongue and cheek
manner, it does turn things around, and make a rational person think.

"With "tongue in cheek", maybe the Pope could retaliate by re-baptising
the dead Mormons to Catholicism?"
Jose Carlos de Leon

How would LDS members feel if their religious records were used this
way? Would they perceive this act as disrespectful of their beliefs or
their ancestor's beliefs?

I do not take these re-baptisms to heart. My ancestors knew what they
wanted-- I, like Felix had very devout Catholics as my ancestors:
several priests, a saint, nuns, Church builders, etc., My earthly
family is too.

I am very appreciative that the LDS Church has preserved these records,
and made them available to me as a Non-Member--regardless of what
motivated the LDS Church. If it were not for their doing, I never would
have been able to access as much information as I have, nor gotten so
far in my research. Some of these records have given me a wealth of
information. I have discovered that an ancestor couple of mine had a
hand in building one of the Catholic Churches in my folk's hometown.
When I walk into a Family History Library, I always remember that I am
guest and behave as one. I would never disrespect their beliefs
although I've heard individuals unknowingly bash mine.

The Pope as the earthly leader of the Catholic Church has a right to
stop making records of Catholic Sacraments available to non-members or
non-relatives. He has not stepped away from his role as religious
leader. He is protecting religious records of individuals who have
come to the Church for spiritual guidance, membership, etc.,
I personally would not want records of my baptism, confirmation,
marriage, etc., to be used in this manner in the future for re-baptism.
Not that I wouldn't know how to respond :)

I believe that we have much microfilm to research in order to get a good
grasp on who our ancestors were and how they lived.
