Best DNA test provider

Hello all:

I know that others have asked in the past, so I apologize. But I just want to make sure if Family Tree DNA is the way to go.

What time frame for your Pineda family? I am researching in Panuco, Zacatecas, Mexico and occasionally find some Pineda's. Haven't found a Pineda/Cardoza combination.

Comentario

I don't know if they are the best, but I think they are pretty good.
As for the tests, Y-12 gives you too many 12/12 matches from people not really closely related to you. The more markers the better, I would go with the Y-37 or Y-67 one. They currently have these tests on sale, but I think the offer ends by the end of the year.

DE LA ROSA from Panuco, Zacatecas, Mexico

Help please. I have several questions regarding the de la Rosa family from Panuco, Zacatecas, Mexico. I will start with the shorter ones so that they don’t get lost in this lengthy request.

For your Seferino de la Rosa and Maria Bictoria Saldivar have you ordered
the film 1093324 (1754-1837), San Juan Bautista, Panuco, Zac.? You should
be able to find both of them and maybe their parents names?

Thank you I have been through Film 1093324 which has both baptisms and some marriages and has also been extracted and put online by familysearch.org. Unfortuntely there are a number of years missing. I have also been through marriage records, using marriage info when marriage records aren't available.

Family Tree DNA

I have used Family Tree DNA. I have used the Y-DNA 67 marker, and the mtDNA,
and have been pleased with the results. However, the Family Finder test has
been a disappointment.

I've had no interest in it. I don't think it's worth the price of such a test.

I believe the DNA profile will fit almost everybody from Mexico. Kind of like reading the Astrology section in the newspaper.

That's as true as saying the U.S. never put a man on the moon or that
radiocarbon dating doesn't prove the age of anything. It's unfortunate
there are still a lot of people that have such a limited understanding of
science even in this day and age.

When I first started working on my family tree over thirty years ago I thought that I would find my tree to be half indian and half spanish. I mistakenly believed that most mexicans would find this to be thE case.
It wasn't until I started my research that I found that I had a mulatto ancestor from the late 1600's. Then I found that I descended from petronila Moctezuma, A descendent of Moctezuma II.
Through my research, I discovered that over 90 per cent of my tree is espanol with an increasing percentage of converso ancestry and a little muslim thrown in. The more research that I do, the more evidence I find of conversos in my ancestry despite proclamations stating the contrary. All mexicans do not share the same DNA. With all the endogamy in our families of course you will find many similar branches But You will also find differences that make our trees unique.
I have not had myself tested for my DNA but your arguement may lead me to finally getting it done

when I had my Gutierrez family DNA done it came back Haplogroup N..found in Siberia, Russia and Finland. I traced this family back to Michoacan abt 1650 and moving to Jalisco in abt 1780.. my only perfect match was a person who's family immigrated to the U.S. in the 1800's.
2 years ago I discovered I have exfoliation glaucoma and that it is genetic and mostly found in people in Finland.  There is also a subclade of N3 found in Seville, Spain and thought to come there with the retinue of the grandchildren of Cortes/Moctezuma. They had many Yndios with them.
I found it interesting.. so did my Mothers Gutierrez family.
My personal MTDNA came back Native American Haplogroup A.. Nahua in Mexico but the book in Nuestros book section showed the bands who carried the 4 MTNDA types, what a wonderful lesson in how our ancestors moved and traveled through the centuries. I personally am glad I had them done.. Oh, my Fathers Castanon DNA came back R1B.

Claudia:

Thank you so much for your efforts on indexing the marriage dispensations from Guadalajara.

From your most recent posting, I have found a new branch of the very prolific and distinguished Covarrubias/Talamantes clan. The following entry from film 1722-1748 FHL Source Film 168608 has the information:

Jacinto and Isabel had an additional hereunto unknown son named Francisco Talamantes who must have left Totatiche/Tlaltenango at an early age to work in the mines in Durango and Chihuahua. He had a son named Ygnacio born in the Real de Papigochi likely sometime in the 1690s and another named Francisco born in Parral, Chihuahua in 1697. Ygnacio returned to Totatiche to marry a great-grandaughter of Jacinto and Isabel named Juana Maria de la Concha.

It is likely that we have found yet another origin of the Chihuahua Talamantes clan, one of whom later was a founder of Los Angeles, in Tlaltenango.

Full details of what I extracted from the above dispensation are available at:

Claudia,

You have set the bar very high for the rest of us. What you have done and continue to do for the group and for all those researching their Mexican roots is beyond words.

By your hard work and dedication, you have put your words into action. While I have yet to find any connections in the dispensas de Guadalajara, I'm sure the day will come when I will use it as a resource.

My sincerest and deepest gratitude goes out to you.

Muchas Gracias prima de Nuestros Ranchos!!

Familia "Ceja" en Michoacan...

Hola,

HOLA ROBERTO

YO TENGO A UN ANTONIO CEJA DE JIQUILPAN QUE SE CASO CON MARIA JOSEFINA MARTINEZ Y ENTRE SUS HIJOS ESTA ANTONIO CEJA MARTINEZ QUE NACIO ENTRE 1819 Y 1822, Y MURIO EN 1894 EN GUADALAJARA, JAL. QUE VIENE SIENDO MI 4TO ABUELO, EL CUAL CASO Y QUEDO VIUDO EN JIQUILPAN Y SE TRASLADO A GUADALAJARA, AQUI SE CASO CON ZENONA LEDESMA EN 1850 Y TUVIERON FAMILIA, DE SUS ANCESTROS SOLO ME QUEDE HASTA SUS PADRES, YA QUE POR LO COMUN DEL APELLIDO Y FALTA DE DATOS EN LOS REGISTROS DE BAUTIZOS ES MUY DIFICIL LOCALIZAR MAYOR INFORMACION.

Comentario

Hola Victor,

Hello, everyone. I'd just like to introduce myself as a new member of this research group. I very recently started researching my family history, but I have been interested in it for years. I have a bit of information from what my grandparents can tell me and also one great-grandmother (103-105 years old), but most dates are missing as of yet. Anyway, I just thought I'd share what I have in the hopes that someone might see a connection to my family, however remote it might be, and we can maybe exchange it.

I'm new, trying to figure out this site!

This leg of my family (tracing back ancestors of my paternal grandfather) was from Tlaltenango, though I do not know at what point they started there.

Generation No. 1
Estimating Catalina Torres born around 1840
1. Catalina Torres married German Contreras (Estimating married around 1860-1870)

Known Children of Catalina Torres and German Contreras are:
2. i. Luciana Contreras (estimating birth around 1870)

Generation No. 2

2. Luciana Contreras married (estimating between 1880-1890) Buenaventura Cornejo son of Ignacio Cornejo and Julia Serrano Cornejo.
Known children of Luciana and Buenaventura:
5. i. Carmen Cornejo, b. 1893 died in 1960's

Generation No. 3

3. Carmen Cornejo was born 1893 (died 1960’s). She married Jose Salinas, born 1889 (died 1940’s), son of Isabel Salinas and Josefa Avila Salinas.

Sole Child of Carmen Cornejo and Jose Salinas was:
1. i. Luis Humberto Cornejo Salinas, b.1935, Zacatecas, Mexico (died in 2011 in Elk Grove, California, U.S. -Salinas surname was dropped when he immigrated to U.S.)

Children of Luis Cornejo Salinas and his wife:
i. Jose Cornejo [born crica 1962-63, died within a few days of birth]
ii. [still living]
iii. [still living]
iv. [still living]

Leonor Huizar Carrillo died at the age of 28 (circa 1944, so born crica 1920) and her husband Juan Campos Alvarez (died 1991 of gunshot wound, believe he was in or near 70's so born around 1910-20's) remarried to her sister Carmen Huizar Carrillo, and also had more children - some of which also married to the other Campos family in Momax.

I will be getting my old family tree from years ago when I asked my grandpa while he was living and lucid for information, and post that as well.

Hoping to learn more of Luis Cornejo Salinas, I was his consentida for sure being his first grandchild and I miss him like crazy, and because he was an only child I feel like I hardly know anything about his family since I never met his parents either because they died before my mother was even born.

I do all my look ups on the http://www.familysearch.com/ website. The site only has information prior to 1900's. The site allows for ordering of films which have information after this date and also can give more information then the IGI or VRI extracted index contain.

I do not know Cuca Godina. But let me ask around and find out if she is a distant relative or something. Is there anyway for you to find out the names of her parents or grandparents?

Thanks,

Welcome to the group. There are a number of us in the group that share your surnames in the same geographic region so I am sure as your research progresses you will find a number of cousins here in the group. I for one have a great number of ancestors from Atolinga, Tlaltenango and Momax and share the Campos and Avila surnames. I also have a great deal of research compiled on the Haro family of Tlaltenango (one of the oldest Spanish families in the region).

Where are San Lorenzo, Los Sedano and El Plateado? What municipality do these ranchos belong to today?

It would be very helpful if you could at least organize your names by generation with approximate dates. Names repeat themselves over and over so it is difficult to discern one from another. I would suggest you download the PAF program, which is free and start entering your information into that program, which will then produce reports in standard formats with recognized numbering systems (i.e. Ahnentafel Charts and Register format). Plus once you start getting lots of names and information you will want to have some standard way to organize your sources and notes.

You can download PAF at: http://www.familysearch.org/

At the same site, you can search through the Latter Day Saints genealogy databases which include extracts of most of the marriage and baptism registers of the towns you have mentioned. For example, I found the following records related to your ancestors so you now have dates for these events:

ATANACIO CAMPOS

Years ago while researching late 1700's Puerto Rican records I came across quite a few espanoles africanos, including one memorable entry of a merchant described as un espanol africano holandes, nacido en tierras de Francia.

Gloria I laughed a lot when I saw your message, that's one of the situations of the extreme carelessness of the priests while writing the records. Sometimes I've struggled a lot because of the mistakes in the grandparent's names and surnames that I get confused and angry because it takes to me a lot of time to follow the right path.
Well I think there's a lot of opinions in here, I do think that the one that has a more credible reason is Mrs. Luz Montejano Hilton, but there's always the door open for many kind of probabilities.

Comentario

I actually said some of the same things Luz Montejano said.

y bisabuelos. Seguramente los encontrarás en México" and I also said "Como

Therefore you can see what I said and Luz said is basically the same and we
agree on these points. As shown by Luz these records were caused by a
misundertanding of the priests as how they were supposed to describe the
families because they were ordered to stop using the caste system due to
the Independence of Mexico. There is not an open door to other probabiities.

Hola Angelina,

Afortunadamente no tengo prejuicios.

EEUU, Brazil, Honduras, Holanda, Inglaterra, y etc.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18684-115205-68?cc=1874591&w…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19039-24166-12?cc=1874591&wc…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19036-42597-44?cc=1874591&wc…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19032-5881-31?cc=1874591&wc=…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19036-41541-0?cc=1874591&wc=…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19032-6893-31?cc=1874591&wc=…

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19034-8679-11?cc=1874591&wc=…

Sinceramente,

Hi Lisa,

You are dealing with the Xáuregui family of Nochistlán and the region round about, this one is very interesting and you’ll know why in a bit.

Here is the transcription,

Presentes Jhoan de Nungarai i Nicolás Ramíres. Presentes Lucas de Lomelí y Nicol’as Ramíres.

Juan Francisco de Xáuregui was a penínsular, native of San Sebastián, Vizcaya, (País Vasco), Spain. Juan de Chávez Salguero was his entire name and additional information for his family can be found in the 1651 padrón (census) of Nochistlán, where it lists his wife and children at the time.

The marriage record after your Xáuregui is my ancestor, Ruíz de Salazar who was also a “vago” from Sevilla, Andalucía, Spain. Just another example.

Vago in this context just means foreigner. It is very likely he had to ask for a dispensa de Ultramarino, since he was foreign, in order to marry his wife. A dispensa de Ultramarino is just like any other marriage dispensation, but it focuses more on the foreigner. A full on investigation on who he/she is, his parents, sometime grandparents, lineage, place of birth, occupation and usually presents three witnesses who know him/her. It is a valuable tool and priceless document in research.

Thank you so much Daniel for all that information. You are truly an asset to this research.
I did notice the Image below the one I needed help on, and that it had the same word "Vago" Jhoan is my 8th ggrandparent. Can you tell me where i can find the Padron for Nochistlan.

Thank you again,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Yes, the record below for Ruiz de Salazar that also mentions Vago is my ancestor. Except he was from Sevilla in southern Spain. The padron, I believe can be found in the document page of Nuestros Ranchos. I probably have the digital copy somewhere. Another good source for these families would be Genealogias de Nochistlan by Vasquez y Rodriguez de Frias. Some errors every now and then, but overall is a useful tool because it quotes many diverse records.

Malas noticias verdad?
Mucha suerte y mucha paciencia. Saludos, Luz Montejano
