Marriage certificate information

I have found with the help of some Nuestros Rancheros a second source of information for the marriage documentation for great-grandfather of mine. However, it has left me with a question.

Mónica,

Following the name of the bride "Cayetana Espinosa" the document reads "de
triana" meaning that she was a resident of the old "barrio de Triana" in
Aguascalientes. Today it is known as "Barrio del Encino". It used to be in
the outskirts of town, but today is within walking distance from the
downtown area (Plaza Patria). The document continues "Libre de catorce
años" meaning that Cayetana Espinosa was 14 years old and free to marry. The
poor punctuation makes this paragraph difficult to read. It would have been
better if it read "Cayetana Espinosa, de Triana, soltera de catorce
años...etc."

I understand that Triana was a barrio that is now Barrio del Encino.  In an unrelated baptismal entry of 1857, the location was stated as 'Triana, Calvillo, Aguascalientes'.  Can anyone shed light on the Calvillo part?  Thank you for any information provided.

Tenorio de Alba

Anyone happen to come across this last name in Zacatecas? I'm searching for a Leonarda that married Nicolas Velarde Abeyta.

Hi Amalia,

It appears your Tenorio de Alba family moved around a bit, I can relate to this. This is what I have on the following people you are looking for. Leonarda Tenorio de Alba married Nicolas Velarde Abeyta on 19 Apr 1751 in the Catedral de San Francisco, Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was the daughter of Miguel Tenorio de Alba and Barbara Tafoya Altamirano. Miguel Tenorio de Alba was son of Miguel Tenorio de Alba and Agustina Romero. Somehow Lopez is tied in here somewhere. Like many of these families, they had ties to Northern Mexico. Primarily Zacatecas, Chihuahua, Sinaloa and Durango. They could have very well been merchants and soldiers.

Many trade routes were established as early as the XVI century. I've had experiences with ancestors being merchants and commercialsts and moving around a bit. My mother is from Aguascalientes and her fourth great grandmother was Juliana Ramos de Oviedo, a commercialist family who came in the mid XVIII century from Granada, Andalucia, Spain. These married into families such as Martinez Conde, Mazon, Emazabel, Gutierrez Solana, Ruiz Zorilla, Obregon, Gomez de Leanos. I have no doubt Tenorio de Alba were involved in the trade network of Zacatecas and Aguascalientes.

There were several other family members of Tenorio de Alba in Santa Fe who married around the same time. They could very well be siblings. There was another line of Tenorio de Alba in Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi and Jalostotitlan. From the late 1600s to the late 1700s. If I remember clearly doing my grandmother's research Tafoya Altamirano was strictly New Mexico research. They did however manage to mingle in Chihuahua in the late 1700s.

Hope this helps,

Daniel

oh thank you Daniel this helps a great deal...Nicolas Velarde was my grandfather 6 generations back. I am trying to find where they came from, this gives me a good place to start. My Velarde line were soldiers per the Spanish Enlistment papers.

Marriage customs

Hello,

I have a question about the protocol/customs of the marriage process of Mexico historically.

Comentarios

Comentario

Hi,
Regarding your question of whether people would have to register for marriage in their parish and civilly, the Catholic Church used to be on charge of performing marriages and baptisms, so they would record all the births, marriages and deaths. Then in the 1850's there was the Reform War, after which, Church and State got separated and in the 1860's the State took over performing marriages and recording births and deaths.
As of today, if you marry in the Church, the Mexican State does not recognize your marriage and vice versa (although nowadays in order to get a Church Marriage you must get the Civil marriage as well). People usually get both if they can, even in the same day, or they may do the Civil marriage a few weeks earlier if they need to apply to some paperwork as a couple, like buying a house.
In the Civil Marriage books you may find up to 3 different records regarding a marriage: when the groom goes to request the marriage, when bride and groom bring up witnesses that state they may get married, and the marriage itself. This formula was pretty much taken from the Church.
The great thing of having so many records for the same event is that many times you can find in one of them important information missing from the others. Totally worth the trouble.

Typically the language in the marriage ceremony includes the term "case y vele" which means that everything from the matrimonial investigation was in order, and everything required by the Council of Trent for a canonical marriage has been done. Sometimes you will see "case y no vele." I believe this means that there was some "issue," but not sufficient to prevent the marriage. Often, in these cases there will be a "vele" done a few days or weeks later, sometimes longer, after the "issue" has been settled.

I use the earlier date in my records, but also note the second date.

I have never gotten a good sense of what "vele" means. I think the literal translation is "veiled"; perhaps it means having the marriage blessed by the Church. Can anyone provide a better explanation?

The essential purpose of the matrimonial investigation is to ensure that the couple is free to marry (or if young, have their parent's permission), not presently married, there are no impediments such as being too closely related either by blood (consanguinity) or marriage (affinity), they are of both Catholic, if either was married before, if the prior spouse is truly deceased. Witnesses were required for both partners. Initially, this was all written out by hand, in later periods, there was a form that was filled out and sworn to by all concerned.

Notice of the marriage was announced from the pulpit on three successive Sundays (this is the Banns); these dates are often in the marriage record. This is to allow anyone in the parish to come forth and raise issues why the couple should not get married.

The matrimonial investigation will sometimes give data not available in the marriage record: ages, place of birth and residence, parents names, prior spouse (sometimes with death date and burial place, or simply how long ago the spouse died). Sometimes (in later periods), there will be a reference to the baptismal records (parish, book number and page). Some of the witnesses may be relatives, with relationship given.

Ocassionally the names in the matrimonial investigation will differ from the marriage record. The names in the marriage record may get shortened.

In general, this is still done today; although publishing the banns is much less common. Couples still go through the investigation process, may still have to apply for and be granted dispensations in some cases; if not granted they cannot be married in the Church, and must be married civilly.

In the period before about 1750, the matrimonial investigations are very useful records to have. They become less useful, but then in the later 1800s and into the 1900s are quite useful.

As of the banns, I have never heard them announced from the pulpit here in Mexico, however I've have seen in the boards of several parishes information regarding the grooms and brides-to-be including their names and photos, so that anybody can learn they are pretending to get married soon and "speak or forever hold their peace".

Dear Monica,
Regarding your first question. Yes, if the groom and bride came from different towns, announcements of the intention of marriage, and corresponding documentation was recorded in their respective parish. Regarding the 'informacion matrimonial' it would be the first step to establish whether there were any impediments because of consanguinity or other non filial relationships. If any was to be found, then the bishop would have to provide the 'dispensa'. Finally, the informacion matrimonial may contain valuable informacion other than the parents names. Also, the names of the parents often appear with variations that gives you clues about ancestral relationships. Finally, if a dispensa was required, then you can then search the Mitra for the specific information that generally contains a detailed description of how the couple was related.

Hello Monica

La Mololoa is not a town. It is/was a ranch or community or hacienda that I
have seen mentioned in many baptisms and marriages for Lagos. I have
contacted several relatives in Lagos by phone to ask about this place. Since
none of them knew offhand and I couldn't get a hold of two uncles that might
know we'll have to wait for a cousin to investigate and get back with me
about the exact location and size of this place.

If you notice some of the baptisms say La Mololoa and some mention Río de
Santa María. If you read a website about Encarnación de Díaz there is a
mention of el Rio de la Mololoa, llamado por los Españoles "Rio de Santa
María" which served as the limits of Teocaltiche, Jalostotitlán, Santa María
de los Lagos, San Juan, and la Encarnación. The ranch would have been next
to el Río de La Mololoa probably close to Encarnación de Díaz since that is
where many of your ancestors are from.

This name intrigued me, so I did a little research.

There was a publication called the United States Investor, in volume 33, number 1, in 1922, there is a little information about the mining stock (not encouraging!) in two Mexican mines: El Favor and Molola. Unfortunately,it doesn't say where the mines are. Here's the url

http://books.google.com/books?id=Y_4gAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA34&lpg=RA1-PA34&…

The Engineering and Mining Journal, vol 96, no. 4, 1913, has little bit more. Under the heading of Guadalajara, it talks about some work being done at the El Favor and Molola mines: they built a high wall around the mine because of bandits. They have high grade ore (gold and silver) being shipped to Aguascalientes. Here's the url

http://books.google.com/books?id=FJEgAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA184&lpg=PA184&dq=el+…

Neither source says where the mine is. Since your baptismal register is from Lagos de Morena, it has to be in that area.

Your people could have been miners. Some people came from the Aguascalientes area to southern Arizona to work in the copper mines there.

On a side issue: I found a company that has an El Favor Mining Company stock certificate for sale. It is dated 1906 (they want $63.00 for it).

Dispensas necessary?

I was just wondering when a person was widowed was a dispensa needed or is that only in the case of inter-family marriages?

Thanks,
Monica

Comentarios

Comentario

Yes, they were required to ensure the previous spouse was indeed dead. Dispensas are a valuable tool and probably the most valuable document in a family besides Ejecutorias de Nobleza o Hidalguia, often naming several generations of one's family, others include Limpieza de Sangre. Anytime an Ultramarino (foreigner) was to marry in the americas, he/she would require to go under investigation. The audencia usually named the pretenso, parents, grandparents and if any hijosdalgo by blood existed. Another instances where dispensas would be issued would be the obvious consanguinity, where two people were too close to marry and would require a special license (dispensa) with a very nice limosna. Some other cases included issuing a divorce or seperation would require a special dispensa. A last example is when two people of very affluent status desired to marry for example the Condesa de San Mateo de Valparaiso and the Conde de la Valenciana or when people from different jurisdictions
were to married, a person of New Spain and a person of Nueva Galicia. A person from Nueva Vizcaya and the Obispado de Michoacan. Hope this gives you some insight on the value of dispensas.
I'm still looking for two dispensas one for Medina/Ramirez de Oliva from Calvillo, Ags issued in 1774 and another of my ancestor Capt. Joseph Victor Nicolas de Camino y Trasgallo as ultramarino issued in 1784. In case anyone runs into these before I do,
Daniel Mendez Camino

Comentario

Daniel,

Thanks for the detailed information. I thought that dispensas were necessary and indeed a wealth of detailed family information. However, I have a relative who was married and widowed several times and the only information I am finding is brief mention of the deceased with indication as to where she is buried (sepultada en...) within the new marriage certificate. I have yet to find a dispensa in the time surrounding the death or marriage within the informacion matrimonial, which is why I was confused. Thanks again for the help, and I will keep my eyes open for your research in hopes of returning the favor.

At this time period, the Indios or Yndios did not have last names,, quite often they had two given first names, such as Maria Micaela or Jose Jacinto. For some of the indios, their second given name eventually became their last name and for others, it wasn't until they married into criollo or espanol families that they acquired a last name.

Some of the indios took on the surname of their owners. If they had been enslaved or were working for their patrones who were the hacendados, they took on their patrones' last names.

I was actually able to find this record without too much trouble. The location is at the end of this post ... but first ...

The Family Search Reference gives you the film number for Aguascalientes marriage records which is important, but actually is not too helpful for the Aguascalientes records as the online images do not include the film numbers. For some areas (generally the more recently posted images) the film numbers will be on the first or second image. For these it is real important to have the number: it will tell you that you are looking at the right film!

From the online listing of Aguascalientes records, go to the marriage record that includes this period. This is 1833-36. The way I start is I initially assume the records are in chronological order. This film has 349 images covering 1833 to 1836. 1834 is about in the middle so I start at an image about the middle: I choose image 150. The date was May 1834 (it is really an accident to hit this close on the first try). If the date weren't near the time of interest, I would move forward or backward, how far depends on how far the date is off, and how many images on the film (far off, lots of images means a bigger jump). In this case the date was real close, so I moved just one image back, image 149, and there it was!

Sometimes, the records for a chapel associated with the main church in a town will be included as a separate list at the end of each month. So, if you are looking at the right month and day, and its not there, go to the end of the month and there may be a new listing.

For some towns the marriages are mixed up, and may have gaps. This is more time consuming as you'll need to find the portion of the film that has the records of interest. The brute force approach is to look at every image from the beginning. This can be tedious. What I sometimes do, will start at the beginning and jump through the film 25 or 50 pages at a time; this will give you a sense of the periods covered, and where the gaps are. When you find the part of interest, then do smaller jumps, or go image by image.

It is often useful to look at the Family History Library card catalog (do a film/fiche search for the film number from Family Search). When you get the record, go to Film Notes. This will often, but not always, provide details on what periods are covered, and what gaps are present.

I have ocassionally found Family Search references for which I cannot find the original records. Sometimes a page may be out of sequence, especially if the book is in poor shape. You can get a sense of this by how the images look. Perhaps the image did not get digitized, but I think this has be to really rare.

Going through a film image by image can be tedious, especially of the images are hard to read.

Sometimes the Family Search reference will give a page or record number; this is not the case for Aguascalientes. When this happens, finding the record is usually pretty easy. I have ocassionally seen registers with more than one page number on each page, you just have to guess which one to use, and hpe the extractor was consistent!

Finally, the url for your record is

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-13200-108577-7?cc=1410092&…

Good luck in your future searches!

George,

I really appreciate the time you have taken to explain your method. I have so much research to do and have found myself lost in the infinite world of cataloging/indexing because I am looking through pages & pages & pages of images. Which isn't a bad thing if it helps someone but is consuming more time than I honestly have to spare. So you sharing your "shortcut"/insight is really helpful.

Thanks again so much and I hope I I am able to return the favor and help you out in the future!

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Cristobal Torres

Hello,

My name is Manuel Torres and I am new to NR. I’ve just started researching
my ancestry about two months ago. It is amazing the amount of information
I’ve already learned considering my parents barely knew anything about their
own grandparents, much less anyone older than that. The surnames that I will
be researching are:

Torres - Zacatecas (Ojo Caliente, La Blanca, Panfilo Natera)

Castillo Tepechitlan, Zacatecas

Carrera - La Blanca, Zacatecas

Morales - La Blanca, Zacatecas

de la O - La Blanca, Zacatecas

Lueretara - La Blanca, Zacatecas

Sandoval - Tepechitlan, Zacatecas

Casas - Jerez, Zacatecas, La Hacienda del Cuidado

Garcia - Zacatecas (Jerez, Cienega)

Vargas - Jerez, Zacatecas

Reveles - Jerez, Zacatecas

Amaro - Jerez, Zacatecas

Right now, I am looking for information on my Great Great Grandfather and
Great Great Grandmother Cristobal Torres and Trinidad Morales. They had a
child by the name of Margarito Torres in the year 1900. So I’m guessing
Cristobal was born around 1878 and Trinidad around 1880. According to the
1930 census, Margartio Torres was born in Ojo Caliente, Zacatecas and his
wife Teresa Carrera, was born in La Blanca Zacatecas, so I’m guessing
Cristobal and Trinidad would have been from around that area. Unfortunately,
I was unable to find a birth record for Margarito Torres. I also came to a
dead end when I looked for birth records for Cristobal and Trinidad, and I
also couldn't find a record of their marriage. So I was unable to get any
more leads at this point. This is where I’m hoping one of you can help me
out.

Thanks in advance,

Manuel Torres

Diego Villalobos Y Ana Jimenes Marriage 28 Oct 1676

I'm trying to locate the Informaccion Matrimonial entry for Diego Villalobos and Ana Jimenes who were married in El Sagrario, Aguascalientes. I found the marriage: Image 67.

Hello Deedra,

I assume you are looking for something to prove who the parents of Diego de
Villalobos and Ana Jimenez were. The answer to the parents of Diego de
Villalobos can be found by using the dispensa on 3 Feb 1786 microfilm 168070
for the marriage of Miguel Ignacio López and Teresa de Villalobos.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18401-10098-46?cc=1874591&wc…

That shows he was the son of Francisco de Villalobos Pérez and María Macias
[Valadez] (alias Vázquez de Retamosa daughter of Gaspar Macias Valadez and
Mariana de Torres or de la Torre) married 22 May 1640 in Teocaltiche.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-19053-2891-27?cc=1874591&wc=…

There is another dispensa, on April 1727 in microfilm 168370, for the
marriage of Ignacio Villalobos to Catarina Villalobos who married 27 May
1727 in Aguascalientes that shows that Diego de Villalobos was a first
cousin of Pedro de Villalobos [Macias Valadez] Pedro was the father of
Ignacio Villalobos and son of Tomás de Villalobos Pérez and Catarina Macias
Valadez y Villegas. That proves Tomás was the brother of Francisco, meaning
were the sons of Cristóbal de Villalobos and María Pérez Madaleno o
Magdaleno married 19 October 1594 Santa Veracruz, Santa Veracruz, Distrito
Federal of which I have a copy. Thanks to a find by Luis Nuñez Gornes
brought to my attention by Celestino Villalobos, who also published this
info here on NR recently, we believe Cristóbal was born 18 April 1567 in
Mayorga de Campos, Valladolid, Castilla y León, España. María Pérez Madaleno
seems to be the daughter of Cristóbal Pérez López and María Magdaleno
Hernández married 19 December 1577 Santa Veracruz, D.F

A dispensa June 1755 microfilm 168376 for the marriage of Juan de Villalobos
to Catarina Rosalia Lechuga Flores shows that Ana JImenez was the daughter
of Catarina Carrillo who was the sister of Teresa Carrillo who was the
mother of María Díaz who was the mother of Miguel Lechuga husband of Maria
Flores Oliva and father of Catarina Rosalia. The name Teresa might be an
error because the only Carrillo I can find that had children with a Diaz is
Jacinta Carrillo with Diego Díaz Montañez. I know there was a Teresa
Carrillo but she married Nicolás de Villalobos Macías Valadez on 27 April
1664 in Teocaltiche. Although she could have remarried a Diaz. Catarina
Carrillo married Juan Jiménez on 21 January 1648 in Teocaltiche. That record
shows her to be the daughter of Diego Carrillo [de Sandi] (the son of Alvaro
Carrillo and María Alvarez de Sand) and María López.

Hopefully someone else here can provide missing info about these families.

Saludos
Armando

There are many gaps in the early matrimonial investigations for Aguascalientes, as well as the documents not being in chronological order.

There are none at all for 1676; I have indexed them all through 1729. The indexes for 1720 and before are posted here at NR. I am currently working on the next 10 years (I'm presently working on the volume for 1730). The volume for 1730 has numerous MIs from 1731 and 1732 (almost all indios), as well as those for 1730.

Please see http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18014

The two files are pdfs (searchable) with the investigations in chronological order. I have generally kept the original spelling, keep in mind the old spellings (b and v may be interchanged, also j and x, and so on).

Hola Monica.

Usando el numero de microfilm que nos diste, 439842, busqué el nombre del
microfilm en
https://www.familysearch.org/#form=catalog&catSearchType=film_number dando
el resultado de Matrimonios 1866-1905 en Fresnillo luego busqué ese
microfilm en la colección Mexico, Catholic Church Records.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.f…

Tampoco conozco bien a Zacatecas. Solo a dos ciudades. Aunque puede ayudar
conocer la area que una persona esta estudiando se puede encontrar los
registros sin conocerla.
