The two files I up-loaded are from the maternal side of my familia, the Olmos, Ruiz, Ruiz de Esparza, Alvares, Muños, Luevano families. To date most of them come from Nochistlan and surrounding rancherias with one branch of Esparza/Luevano coming from Pabellon Rincon de Romos Aguascalientes around 1820.

This is hard loving work that will keep me busy for years to come.

Dear Ranchos Members,

I also have with the help of Arturo up-loaded my husband's genealogy GEDCOM file to my Genealogy folder. Looking forward to linking with other Ranchos Members.

Last evening after sharing what I thought was a link with Maria Cortez, she answered my e-mail with "It's a Match." After only 3 days of being a Ranchos member, a new found "cousin." "How Sweet It Is! " Hoping that, that match will also include Alicia's ancestry.

not so quick. . .

. . .imagine this [can you hear all the other Rancho members saying,
"Here comes Joseph's little speech."] anyway never mind what they are
thinking. Imagine this: 200+ years ago your family and Maria Cortez'
family were really Tight! I mean they were blood relatives tight! I mean
they probably celebrated together and shared meals together and fought
together you know they were family and did all the loving and sometime
not so loving things that family does to each other. But still they were
family and blood family and loved each other like blood family does.
Anyway then along came "Something" I don't know a revolution, war,
migration, famine, any number of things could have happened and your
family and her family became separated. . .have you ever been lost from
another family member, well imagine that feeling on a permanent basis,
how terrible. But low and behold along comes Maria Cortez and then along
comes Pat Silva Corbera and they find each other again with maybe a
little push or help in there somehow from Deena Ortiz (who by the way is
a Nuestros Ranchos member as well). This is magnificient this is
wonderful this is the time for a party a fiesta its time to make a big
pot of menudo (I love menudo) and all the other delicious foods and time
to party down because for 200+ years you all were lost and for all
intents and purposes forgotten to each other but now you are Found. The
blood in you both must be rejoicing!

So with all that excitement I was hoping that the two of you could give
just a few more details of how EXACTLY you are relatives? I mean so it
so we can celebrate with you.

happy days. . . .many many congratulations!!!

ps: by the way Pat if you haven't already go to the albums and in the

Just to clarify Patricia's message, she uploaded her GEDCOM to the GEDCOM database, so you can search her genealogy files by clicking the GEDCOM menu item at the top of the site.

You can simply enter a name or list individuals by surname by clicking on the "Surnames" menu option. If you want to see individuals only from her tree, you can simply use the pull-down menu and select her tree.

The most common surnames in her tree are as follows (you get a list just like this from the GEDCOM database):
1. Aguirre (13)
2. Perez (11)
3. Gonzalez (7)
4. Sandoval (7)
5. Losano (6)
6. Delgadillo (5)
7. [no surname] (4)
8. Andrade (4)
9. Chavez (4)
10. Rodriguez (4)
11. Velasco (4)
12. Garcia (3)
13. Plasencia (3)
14. Mercado (3)
15. Perez Sotelo (3)
16. Contreras (3)
17. Duran (3)
18. Ximenes (3)
19. Corona (2)
20. Lara (2)

Hi Joseph and Fellow Ranchos,

Pretty soon, members are going to be saying... not that Pat person again...;-).

This is what I shared with Maria Cortez after seeing a message that she added to the info e-mail on the Brentwood meeting:

Bernardino Gonzales de Islas m. Mariana Moscoso Sandoval 21 Apr 1631, Nochistlan, this couple is my husband's 8th Great Grandparents. Tino's line/s descends from two of their daughters. Petrona Isles and Mariana Isla Sandobal/Sandoval.
Petrona m. Diego Delgadillo parents of Mariana Delgadillo m. Francisco Flores de Medrano parents of Mariana Flores de Medrano m Nicolas Diaz Montanez parents of Maria Diaz Montanez m. Joseph Gonzalez Losano parents of Juana Josepha Gonzalez m. Nicolas Jose de Sandoval parents of Juan Manuel de Sandoval m. Maria Gertrudis Velasco parents of Maria Rosalia Sandoval m. Jose Norverto Perez Rodriguez parents of Maria Ynes Rodriguez m. Jose Gabriel Perez parents of Jose Victoriano Perez m. Maria Aniseta Aguirre parents of Jose Fernando Perez m. Maria Hilaria Andrade parents of Maria Refugio Perez (my husband's mother)...

This is what Maria wrote back:

We have a match! I descend from Petrona de Islas m. Diego Delgadillo. I have your husband's ancestress Mariana Delgadillo christened 23 Mar 1655 in Nochistlan, Zacatecas in my database. Mariana is the sister of my ancestress, Thomasa Delgadillo. Thomasa married Diego Juarez, they were the parents of Josepha Manuela Juarez. Josepha Manuela m. Nicolas Vazquez. They were the parents of Rosa Maria Vazquez (my 5th great-grandmother). I'll stop here and can run a descendacy report if you are interested and give you more details. I found a lot of my older data in Jose Luis Vazquez's book Genealogia de Nochistlan.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not too sure at this stage of our research the exact "kinship," Maria shares with my husband, but as soon as we get it all posted, we'll share it with the group.
Here's what PAF has from Maria's 5th ggmother to Tino...
Rosa Maria Vazquez and Florentino Corbera are 2nd cousins 8 times removed. Their common ancestors are Diego Delgadillo and Petrona Islas.
Fw: July 29th meeting
Enrique,
Are you also new to Nuestros Ranchos, If you are, welcome to this caring group of people who call themselves Genealogists.
I was born in a rancheria just outside of Tlachichila called Los Cardos and have lived in San Jose, Ca since I was 2 years of age. My father and padrino, (dad's brother) came first and worked in Los Gatos for the Novitiate Vineyards, they made the wine for the Catholic Church which was then consecrated for the priests' use in the mass.
Among the family names we have are Avelar, Aguayo, Aguirre, Bargas, Carrillo, De la Cruz, Duran, Esparza, Frias, Garcia, Gomez, Guerrero, Hernandez, Jauregui, Luevano, Macias, Muños, Martinez, Olasava, Olmos, Ortega, Rubalcava, Ruano, Ruiz, Ruiz de Esparza, Sigala & Valades. I say we because both me and my husband are from the same region, he was born in Rancho La Trinidad and I in Los Cardos.
I live in Northern California and belong to the Northern California genealogists, an off shoot of Ranchos. We meet quarterly and the next meeting as noted below will be in Brentwood on July 29th. If you are interested I can ask Maria Cortez, the group facilitator and coordinator to add you to the list.
Here is a copy of the posting she recently sent out to the attendees along with the attachment that has the meeting place and the agenda.
Maria, See Enrique's inquiry below regarding the meeting in Brentwood in July. Enrique, please respond as soon as possible to Maria if you are interested in attending this meeting, her e-mail address is cc'd above. We would be glad to have you as a new member.
Atentamente,
I am very curious about the meeting referenced below. I was born in Nochistlan, I have traced a bulk of my family (Legaspi, Frias, Huerta, Mejia, Jauregui, plus) over the years....This meeting in Brentwood California?
Dear New Found Friend/s, and hopefully "familia," I wish I could take all the credit, but I can't. I have spent many hours in our local FHC, struggling, viewing film after film with little results. Some film orders dating back to 1996. My on and off again research with my husband's ancestry took a back seat to my own Portuguese ancestry, with his being put on the shelf collecting dust.. But each time I picked it up, I also put it back down. About 4 years ago, I picked it up again. This time someone named Deena Ortiz, responded to a posting that I had placed on one of those online "message boards. " One thing lead to another, with exchanged e-mails, and her sending me a GEDCOM file. I owe her so much! Well, as the story goes, once again the binders went back on the shelf, until three days ago. I still don't know how I came upon NuestrosRanchos website, but I did, and the rest is history. I truly believe that our love ones that no longer walk this earth with us, are
still in our lives guiding our way to new found family.
OK! Alicia you're next...
Valle de Huejucar and Calvillo
For those researching Huejucar and Calvillo, a long time ago I took the following note from "Historia del estado de Aguascalientes" by Agustin R. Gonzalez, Mexico 1881 [my translation]. Unfortunately I can't remember where I read or found the book:
Thanks for your reply, being that in the near future I will begin ordering films from both Aguascalientes and Jalpa, this definition of the Valle de Huejucar comes in very handy. Isn't Jalpa now in the jurisdiction of Juchipila and I have always heard it mentioned as El Canyon de Juchipila, the Canyon of Juchipila.
I will do a search to see if I can come up with this book by Agustin Gonzalez.
Thanks,
Alicia
For those researching Huejucar and Calvillo, a long time ago I took the following note from "Historia del estado de Aguascalientes" by Agustin R. Gonzalez, Mexico 1881 [my translation]. Unfortunately I can't remember where I read or found the book:
Valle de Huejucar (Guaxucar, Huajucar), at or near Calvillo, Aguascalientes, was within the original limits of Xalpa (Jalpa) and became a community center for the surrounding haciendas early in the 18th century. pg 43
"CALVILLO. Se inicio su fundacion como consecuencia del auto proveido el 18 de noviembre de 1771, por el senor Canonigo y Doctor don Manuel Colon de Larreaegui gobernador por 'sede vacante' de la Mitra de Guadalajara, que erigio el Curato o parroquia de 'S. Jose de Huajucar' (o "Guajucar') en el Valle del mismo nombre, segregandolo del de Tabasco, Zac., en terrenos que pertenecieron al antiguo rancho o hacienda, cedidos por el prominente vecino don Jose CALVILLO, en cuyo honor tomo su apellido como titulo, a partir de febrero de 1825." pg 22
Does anyone know which particular don Jose CALVILLO this one was? I've never been able to find out. Hope this helps.
Gloria (Calvillo)
The wonderful thing about this document is that it has a picture of Trinidad. For those list members that have never seen one, in a couple of days I'll scan the one I have, and place it on my "La Casita Corbera webpage." I'm a little late in trying to catch up with what is
going on at Nuestros Ranchos. I just came across this
e-mail sent by Ernie in regards to the digitized
records that are now on-line. How are they accessed?
Will they be available on the Family Search website?
Thank you!
Batch #
The only way that the database can link back to the familysearch website is if
the batch number is entered exactly as it would be in the familysearch site,
so therefore only one batch number can be entered in every entry.
Arturo, would it be possible to show the format that you would like us to use when making this listing?
I was not aware that there could be multiple batch numbers for the same film.
If there is a way to differentiate what information is in each batch, can you
please enter that as part of the film description.
Thanks for your contributions to the database.
Patricia:
If you look in the Films section and find a municipality that has films already listed you will see what the batch descriptions look like... they are usually some description like "Baptisms" or "Marriages" or "Baptisms (Boys)", etc. You will then need to enter the begin date and the end date of the film(s) that the batch covers as well as the batch number and the film number. If you happen to have the film on indefinite loan, you should enter your name in the "Borrower" field otherwise leave this blank.
Here is an example from Arandas:
Baptisms Boys 1803-1818 279530 J602955
Baptisms Girls 1803-1818 279530 K602955
Marriages 1802-1812 279674 M604429
The added value of the films section is the ability to search by location and date. By entering batch numbers in familysearch you are able to perform all sorts of interesting wildcard search functions, including simply listing everything that is on the batch. By clicking on the IGI or VRI button next to a film listing, it will automatically take you to the familysearch site and list everything on that batch. At that point you can simply refine the search down by last name, by entering a parent's name, etc. You can leave everything else as a blank or a wildcard.
The library catalog does not list batch numbers so having them available and then directly linked to the search function can be very helpful when doing searches.
There are a couple of postings about the use of wildcards. You can search for "wildcard" and you will find them
Just start entering them one at a time. Get your list of batch numbers
and start listing them exactly as you see them listed in the IGI making
sure to supply all the info given in Arturo's database.
thanks for your willingness to do this. Oh and if you have any of the
films on permanent hold list yourself in the database. If you see a film
already entered don't reenter it but you can edit it with your name as
well if you happen to own it. I think there is enough room there to add
another name (not sure).
ps: if you have any questions ask about this again.
Could some records from Calvillo be elsewhere? Where were the records sent - to
I can only comment as I don't have answers. I know that it is a bit
confusing about the Valle de Huejucar and the Town of Huejucar.
the Valle de Huejucar is Aguascalientes I believe while the town of
Huejucar is just north of Colotlan and Santa Maria de Los Angeles in
Jalisco.
I need to apologize but I believe that Gloria Delgado (or was it Peggy)
sorry I can't remember, anyway she posted some material on the Parochia
del Valle de Huejucar on the old Ranchos yahoo group that I just
uploaded to the new site. I wanted to put it together but the Word
document is in the "reference material" section
(http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/14529) while the jpeg fotos of some
census records of the Ranchos therein are in the Albums
Have I guessed the correct forum for posting this message? I'm not very good at discerning into which forum to post certain inquiries or comments - so I just hope for the best.
Anyway - What genealogy software do you use? How would you evaluate it (i.e., what do you like/dislike about it)?
My sister and I only use Macs. My family has just about every Mac on the market.
We gave up on Reunion. I'm currently using MacFamily, a new software program developed in Germany. It has a few bugs, but it is cheap and being upgraded constantly.
MacFamily is the best option in my opinion. You can order it online. Try a google search for MacFamily. You can dowload a free sample then pay for a password for full access.
I personally like the Family Tree Maker 6.0. Its easy to use and I can store pictures and print reports easily. Actually, this is the only one I've used so I guess I have nothing to compare it to....
p.s. Glad to be back! This new way of posting messages is kind of strange, and I haven't had time to do any serious research although about a month ago I made some good headway. I've started taking an online Sociology class at the local community college. It's been a long time since I've had to "read chapters" in a text book and it was a little slow at first. Anyway, hope this message posts....
Family Tree Maker is incompatible with a Mac. She requested software recommendations for her new IMac computer.
Family Tree Maker is only operational with an IBM based PC, not an Apple computer.
El Paso, Texas Border crossing records
Saludos a todos,
I am planning a few trips to visit the UTEP special collection dept to see the documents of Cleofas Calleros. This local historian, author became the Mexican Border Representative of the National Catholic Welfare Conference Bureau of Immigration in El Paso in 1926 to 1968. He handled over 1 million immigration cases and from what I have seen of his documents he was a very organized and meticulous Rep. These records were donated to the UTEP Library and have all been sorted by surname and placed in acid free file boxes. Unfortunately the records for letters A-E were destroyed. If you know that your ancestor came thru El Paso e-mail me directly with the names and any pertinent info such as name of state, town of birth, spouse, parents. Remember that women used their maiden name. This info allows me to distinguish from many similar records. I will then get a copy and e-mail them to you. Some of these records have pictures, with these I take a photo and will
I don't know of any Puentes that might have come through during that
time period (mine came through in 1911), but sometimes there are finding
ask if they have a finding aid for this collection? If they do can you
photocopy it for me? Ask if they have other finding aids other than the
one I'm listing next?
I currently have a finding aid for this Film Series: UTEPMF489 Juarez
Cathedral.doc [Note to Mickey: this is the finding aid I was talking to
you about].
[[[[[NOTE TO GROUP: I have this finding aid in .doc format. If anyone is
doing Chihuahua research contact me OFF LIST at makas@nc.rr.com and I'll
I hope others in the group that had relatives come through during that
time period take you up on such a generous offer to help.
Does that collection have any kind of index?
thanks,
Best of luck to you. I just got a dozen letters all at once from the Department of Homeland Security. That return address just about gave me a stroke!
But the letters were in response to Freedom of Information requests I made on my Rodriguez relations who I know came thru El Paso in 1918, fleeing Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua which was then suffering the double whamy of the world-wide flu pandemic and the Mexican Revolution. I've seen my great grandpa Jose Rodriguez's passport, with the El Paso stamp in it, but Homeland Security found no record of any kind on him, his wife, or children.
I'm told the El Paso Library is a great source of genealogical records, but when I've called the phone is always dead. I learned that the libary is closed for remodeling. No one has been able to give me a re-opening date.
Supposedly everything is boxed and in storage.
Yolanda/Ernie,
I don't remember knowing that UTEP had such file boxes of border
crossing records...perhaps I'd heard and dismissed it because
my ancestors entered earlier than 1926. UTEP Special Collections
does, however, have a wonderful collection of OLD Mexican books,
and the periodicals has a good collection of Mexican newspapers
and documents. I found my ancestor's request to obtain rights
to a mine in Durango in 1860s or 70s. There are definitely good
documents there - most which I have yet to explore.
Regarding the public library...I can keep my eyes open and let
you know as soon as it opens up again. It looks like they're
almost done with the new development but I don't know how long
it'll take to set it all up.
Take care,
Connie & Yolanda: I number of years ago, I was of the understanding that a museum was going to be built in El Paso in honor of those wonderful men, women, and children that crossed from Mexico into the United States in the 1920's. Do you have any information on such a museum?
Gracias, Helyn
Now this might not be too much help but awhile back Arturo Ramos posted
this message and it might be appropriate to revive it. I know the next
time I have some research time in DC this is the material I plan to
study. The 1920 Census records for my Puentes family indicates they
crossed in 1911. . .I'm hoping they are on this material. You never know
but maybe this film can be copied and distributed to some of the other
NARA branches in the US.
Champurrado (Chocolate-flavored atole)
I had no idea what Champurrado was before this message.. I had it for the first in Tapalpa Jalisco, you're right, it's an acquired taste... I couldn't get paste the texture. I also have to admit I didn't recognize most things I ate on this trip to Jalisco, Zacatecas and Colima! I discovered my family didn't cook anything like the ancestors did, we had Americanized almost everything..
My grandmother used to make this and regular atole, but I never liked
it--EVER--I wanted to, to please her by consuming her delicious food
but yuck!!! I just couldn't drink it. My grandmother died 50 years
ago this month. How I wish I could really talk with her now about her
girlhood and HER grandmother. Marge:)
Research in Aguascalientes
I just returned from our 31st Castanon Family Reunion in Stkn Ca. and had a family member ask if I had any information for her husbands family originally from Aguascalientes.. I found some information on Familysearch and am wondering if anyone in the group is working this Andrade line? Luciano Andrade and Antonia Montes were married in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes on Feb. 18 1835. Their son Pascual Andrade, wife Maria Augustina Lopez, married May 23 1859 are the parents of Luis Andrade June 1874, wife, Angela Mendez who are the parents of my relative Luis Andrade from Ca. I was amazed I could find this much online and am praying someone in the group has other information.
