In Search of the Jalisco Bridge

HI,

I am a new member to Nuestros Ranchos and already I made contact with a distant Tisnado relative. Based on the IGI found in www.FamilySearch.com, migration and settlement patterns, I am searching for the Tisnado ancestor who migrated from Jalisco to Sonora.

It looks like you are on a pretty good path of getting yur genealogy back to Jalisco in the 18th Century. I see from the IGI that the parents for Domingo Tisnado are not listed in the extracted record. Have you looked at the film to find the actual entry? That should list his parents. I think you are correct that he probably migrated from Jalisco... Anahualco de Mercado in particular has a number of candidates... but it is a very common name so you would need the names of Domingo's parents to pinpoint which Domingo Tisnado you are looking for. That should be easily obtainable from looking at the film.

Hello Rose & welcome to the group.

In reading films for Momax, Zacatecas, I found that many of my ancestors were listed as being from "Cuculiten", which had some slight variations in its spelling. I would bet that the location was a "rancho" during our time frame of research.

In looking at my trusty map, there appears to be such a place North East of Momax. On this Ranchos site there is a link to a listing of the towns/ranchos/pueblos in existence during the time of our ancestors. Hope this helps.

Gonzales, Francisco
He married Francisca Munos. At the time of his death he was a widower and
resident of the town of El Atajo in Aguascalientes. According to the
document he was originally from Cuculiten, but it possibly could have been
Culiacan, Mexico. He was buried 28 May 1765 in Aguascalientes,
Aguascalientes.

Gonzales, Francisco Cleto
The son of Francisco Gonzales and Francisca Munos. He was born 21 May 1716
in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes. He was baptized 13 June 1716 in
Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes. The godmother was Juana Manuela Gil.

Gonzales, Francisco Remigio
The son of Francisco Gonzales and Francisca Munos. He was baptized 11
November 1720 in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes. The godparents were Pedro
de Esparza and Andrea Calbillo.

Gonzales, Francisco Solano
The son of Salvador Gonzales and Catharina Ramires. He was baptized 4 July
1709 in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes. The godmother was Nicolasa Ruis de
Esparza.

Gonzales, Geronimo
The son of Juan Gonzales Hidalgo and Cathalina Gonzales. He was baptized 25
January 1682 in Teocaltiche, Jalisco. The godparents were Onofre Rs and
Cathalina Sena.

Gonzales, Gregorio Albin
The son of Francisco Gonzales and Francisca Munos. He was baptized 1 May
1723 in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes. The godparents were Juan Munos and
Josepha Mathiana Munos. He was confirmed on 15 May 1741 in Aguascalientes,
Aguascalientes.

Thank you for that infomation on Cuculiten. I've been stuck on my Gonzales
surname. And the last information I have on my oldest line states he was
from Cuculiten. I had no idea where it was and had posted a question on
Ancestry's message board awhile ago. It now gives me a sense of direction. I
have spent the past 10 or so years working in Aguascalientes...I almost know
it like the back of my hand. In fact I have extracted the confirmation
records film # 299536 from 1620-1759,1789-1822 (people with surnames) in
Aguas, Aguascalientes. I'm in the process of editing it as a majority of the
names were abbreviated. It took my over a year to extract the film. There
are also confirmations on an Aguas, Aguascalientes baptism film 299422 which
is not listed on the film notes at FamilySearch.org. I have extracted these
also. 1663-1684 Aguascalientes confirmations were sent to SHHAR for their
next journal.

Thank you so much for sharing that information on the Gonzalez from Aguascalientes with us. I have two Gonzalez lines that I suspect are from the Altos/Aguascalientes region originally. One appears in Tlaltenango/Tepechitlan in the mid 1700s.

I have a strong suspicion that one is a Gonzalez de Yslas line because the people switch back and forth between the two names until Yslas sticks... That one I can trace back to a Juan Vicente Gonzalez (de Yslas?) married to Agustina Fasutina Gonzalez in 1756.

The other I can trace back to Tayahua, Zacatecas around the same time:

Juan Antonio Gonzalez and Maria de Avila were parents to Pedro Gonzalez born in Tayahua, Zacatecas circa 1740.

Any of this coincide with any names that you have?

Comentario

The Gonzalez de Ysla/Ysla's were from Nochistlan, Zacatecas. My most current
Ysla is from around 1619, Maria de Ysla who married Cristobal Lozano
Martinez. If you ever get your hands on Jose Luis Vazquez's book "Genealogia
de Nochistlan Antiguo Reino de la Nueva Galicia en el Siglo XVII Segun Sus
Archivos Parroquiales" it is excellent. There is some missing information,
but on the whole it's a great book. A must have for Los Altos researchers.

Thank you, that answered my questions. I am trying to learn. Helen

Accurate Transcribing: was-gedcom files

I've standardized all my spellings to conform to today's language.

At first I left the old names, they are quaint and add a certain flavor to my tree.

But my tree is too large and unwieldly for that now. Too many alternate names cause confusion and chaos.

Comentarios

Comentario

I've struggled with the same problem. A long time ago I noticed that
standardized spelling helped enormously in finding people and matching
duplicates in my database. So now I've standardized nearly all
surnames and given names, even being careful with the accent marks.

But in the source citations I do the best I can to preserve the
original spelling as found in each source.

I also record pre-surnames like "de la" in a field that isn't involved
in sorting yet does appear in printed reports: so that de la Cruz and
Cruz sort together. I do the same with José and María, so that José
Antonio sorts with Antonio and María de Refugio sorts with Refugio. I
also expand abbreviations like Igo for Ignacio and Rdz for Rodríguez.

I think the important thing is that, to be an accurate transcriber,
the original spelling as found should be documented somewhere in your
database or research notes.

Many scribes make no distinction whatever between g's and q's, so much
so that there seems to have evolved two forms of some names. Like
Vásguez and Vásquez. Whenever I see these I always assume the more
common form -- until I'm informed otherwise ...

And of course everybody probably knows by now the interchangeability
of S and Z, J and X, V and B, C and S, H or no H, and a few other
combinations.

One problem I am still dealing with, not being a native of Mexico, is
diacriticals. Rodríguez is almost never accented in handwriting --
probably because it is so common -- but to strictly follow the Spanish
accent rules, the accent must be placed, unless it is spelled
Rodrigues, in which case the accent mark isn't needed. Since many of
these name are not familiar to me, I often mispronounce them. I've
only recently learned, for example, that Julian is properly pronounced
(and written) Julián. So from time to time I pick a certain given name
or surname and go through the database and correct the accent marks.

(For any who are not familiar with the rules, Spanish words are always
accented on the last syllable, with only 3 exceptions -- unless it
ends with S, N, or a Vowel. If it ends with one of those it is
accented on the next-to-last syllable. If it is pronounced any other
way, an accent mark is used to specify how it is to be pronounced.
There's another rule about what to do with words that end in two
vowels, but I'm a little fuzzy about that one.)

Stuart,

What you state in your last paragraph about accented Spanish words isn't exactly correct. I recommend that whoever is interested in Spanish grammar rules search the Internet for the expression "reglas de acentuación", like for example the following site:
http://www.elcastellano.org/acentos.html

However, it should be noted that many of the sacramental documents we use for genealogy research just a few decades old do not normally comply with current grammar rules. Besides, proper names' spelling do not always follow standard rules and that should be a consideration when trying to "normalize" surnames.

Maria Ruano's Siblings

Actually, I found five individuals whom I believe are siblings for Yolanda's grandmother, Maria Ruano. There may be more, but the IGI database for Nochistlan only goes up to 1875. Unless the microfilms for the years after 1875 are indexed, it will necessitate going through them entry by entry to find any others.

ok Yolanda, Deena and Alicia and others have opened some very very big
holes in your Brick Wall. . .even if there are indexes to those films
you need to go through each frame by frame and hunt for the relatives.
Don't just look for your straight line relatives but look for the
branches as well. In fact looking for the branches is what gives you
some of your best information and helps get you past some of your future
brick walls.

Order a film and start researching. As you get about 1/3 to 1/2 way
through maybe order your second film. If you find that the film has many
many of your relatives consider putting the film on permanent hold at
your closest and most convenient Family History Center.

Joseph. I'm planning on taking some days offa few days

that is 50 miles away from me. I go to college at
night, four nights a week. The only day I have free in
the evening they are closed. I can't way to go there.

I do have a question I was going to ask Deena or
Alicia. I'll just ask you. When you go to the FHC
what do you take with you. I will be taking the
information on the films that everyone have sent me.
But what else do I need to take. Since this is the
first time that I will be going I want to make sure
that I have every thing I need. I'm like a little kid
at Christmas time I just can't wait.

Comentario

This is what I ideally take over to the FHC. I assume that since you have never been there, you do not yet have any films waiting to be read. As such, you will likely just need the film numbers and their descriptions so that you can fill out the order cards. Of course you will need $5.50 in cash per film to pay for the order/loan.

They may have other materials that you can peruse while you are there but most likely they will have nothing too specific.

What may be useful is to have one of the volunteers there show you how to use the IGI and VRI. They usually have a PC version and of course you can use the online version at familysearch.org from their computers as well. I find the latter much more user friendly.

Once you have received films, these are some items that I have found to be useful on my trips to the FHC:

- A notebook to write down notes from a film or transcribe entries from the film.

- A couple of pens and a pencil.

- A printout of the ancestry data you have that includes specific dates and places.

- A USB drive to carry your PAF/GEDCOM and search/update it at the center as you read a film. This is also VERY useful if your center has a digital film reader that allows scanning to a PC. You can then take "snapshots" of the film entries for FREE and they are much better quality than the photocopier style film printer ones.

Comentario

Arturo,

Excuse my ignorance but I must ask anyway. What is this USB Drive that you talk about, it sure sounds like something very useful and what is the cost and is it any USB Drive? Is it something easy to use for a computer ingnoramus like me.

Now onto your suggestions for things to take with you, if you are making copies at your FHC, I have and use a 6 digit stamper that stamps the film # on every copy I make. When taking a pen I take a colored pen usually red in case I have to write any comments or notes on the copy, red stands out and is easier to read. I also take highlighter pens as some copies have multiple records on them, I highlight the record that is of interest to me. I also carry one or two magnifying lenses as some films or records are very difficult to read.

When reading the film, I keep a notebook for Genealogy only and record the film #, whether it's for baptisms, marriage, census or other. It usually takes me several trips to view the entire film, each time I go I write down what page numbers I have read and I record the last page I viewed EXAMPLE Pages 1-122., last page viewed 122, matrimonio de Refugio Duran con Maria de Jesus Sigala, 2 Sept 1842. This saves me from having to go through the same pages a second time, I record the names and the date because some films have many years of records and each year will begin again at page 1.
I also record what films I have ordered and when. When new films arrive, I record the date they arrived. When I re-order I record the dates of the first extension or the last extension. I began to do this because I was being charged twice for the extension of the same films. The lady at the FHC did not do this intentionally she did it because she would get confused as I was ordering and extending too many films and she didn't appear to have a good method for tracking it.

Alicia, Yolanda, et al:

You can see what a USB drive looks like here. It is basically a pretty small solid state (no moving parts) memory card that plugs into a USB port of any computer and works just like another hard drive, so you can save and load files from it. They come up to about 4GB (expensive) but you can get some for 64 MB that are pretty inexpensive. The film scans usually take up 2 MB so even a 64 MB one will fit a dozens of them plus your PAF file.

The one listed here is 256MB and costs $20.

When you unplug your USB Drive you must always make sure to first go to the "Unplug and Eject Hardware" Screen. There should be a little light on the USB Drive. You should never unplug the device when the light is on. If you go to the "Unplug and Eject Hardware" Screen. This will shut down the drive which at some point will turn the light off. When the light is off then it is 'Safe' to unplug the USB Drive. If you unplug it when the light is on, it will sometimes erase the drive. It is also 'Save' to unplug the USB Drive when the computer is turned off.

Hope this helps...

Call them before you go. Ask them if there is any way you can order a
film before going there. If you go those films won't be there until you
order them. Maybe just maybe they will let you mail them the money and
order a film or two. After the films arrive say in about 3-5 weeks then
they will call you to tell you they are in. If they don't allow you to
order other than in person then your first trip there will be only an
educational one to learn how to use the center. You can go and order
your film and then get a tour of the facility. Also you'll be able to
use the computers there and use their free access to Ancestry.com which
at least lets you look at the US Census records.

But later after you order your first film and it arrives you'll need a
note book and pen/pencil. Also you will need to have good reading
glasses if you need them. They should be able to get you started on how
to load the film on the readers and should have a way you can make a
copy of the those records of your family on the particular film you borrow.

Also be prepared for some records that might be difficult to read. You
never know but they might be easy and they might be hard. You need to be
ready in your mind for all possibilities. I remember the very first film
I looked at. . .I just couldn't believe it, my heart just dropped to the
bottom of my chest I was so disappointed because i though it was a
terrible mess to look at. Not because it was in Spanish but becuase the
handwritting was bad and the ink was smeared and the ink was to light or
to dark BUT then I later learned that those first films were some of the
best films I had. Boy was I glad that I got used to reading them real
quick and found that they were easier and easier with more time looking
at them. Don't be surprised just be ready for a film that might be a
challenge, but don't give up as the rewards are great.

I'm going to upload a few different scans of films just to give you an
idea of what some of the possiblities are. I'll put some good ones and
some bad ones you look and get your mind to accept whatever comes your
way, because on those films good or bad are your people and you have to
accept that.

go to:

albums then to

Some Sample Film Records: Misc

then click on the each of the five records I uploaded. I'll not leave
them there for long just a week or so and later I'll delete them. Have a
look just as an idea.

or you can go here:

As Marge has requested, I have uploaded various Jerez files that include specific baptisms, marriages, and communications in various years and centuries. I placed them in the research file sections. You can browse these files fairly easily since they are mostly alphabetical. Good luck. Unfortunately, I have no relatives from Jerez.

Happy 4th of July.

Hey Ed,

Where is the Research File Section?

When I go into the file section, all I see is:
- Member Genealogy Files
- Reference Material
- Books and Articles

I can't find the files you posted.

Thanks,
Angie Godina

Helen,

Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Aguascalientes cover a large geographical area.
Can you narrow down your research to one of these three states or even
to some specific areas within one or more of the three states?

Later when you feel comfortable why not send in an introduction giving
us the surnames for the specific areas within our target area you are
researching? You never know but someone in the group might be
researching one of your surnames in your area of research.

If you get a chance log in and go to the files ---> members genealogies

thanks,

joseph

I am Helen Femat Fisher. My family members come from Aguascalientes.
My grandfather, Tiburcio Femat was born in San Jose de Jesus Maria, Aguascalientes. His parents Hermenegildo Femat and wife Antonia Montanez de Femat were from Aguascalientes, Aguas.
My father Raul Femat, was born in Aguascalientes, Aguas. we tried to get his birth certificate but it had burned in a fire. We were able to get his b aptism cert. As far as I have been able to tell, Antonia Montanez parents Tiburcio Montanez Reyes and Simona Richarte were both from Aguascalientes, A.

My grandmother, Francisca Perez, was born in Rincon Grande, Jalisco, her mother was Justa Gonzalez Montanez de Perez from Ojuelos Ledesma, Jalisco. Her father was Pedro Perez, I asume from the same area. Justa's father was Secundino Gonzalez married to Ysabel Montanez. I know that my grandmother's Montanez and my grandfather's Montanez side were connected. Thank you for trying to help me. Helen

Helen:

It appears someone at LDS is researching your family as well, since there are a number of entries of your ancestors in the IGI that indicate they were submitted by an LDS member. Is it you by any chance?

Here is your grandfather's marriage. It appears your grandfather was named after his gandfather:

Hermenegildo Femat
Parents:
Father: Tiburcio Femat Family
Mother: Simona Richarte
Marriages:
Spouse: Antonia Montanez Family
Marriage: 1874 San Francisco,De Los Romo, , Aguascalientes, Mexico

Comentario

Helen:

Here is another interesting entry that may or may not be your ancestor but the dates seem to match and the fact that this woman's father's name was Tiburcio makes me think that the information in my previous message which was included in the IGI from an individual's pedigree rather than an actual extraction of a record may be incorrect... both Hermengildo's father's name and perhaps the location of the marriage.

If this is the correct Simona Richarte, the name Tiburcio in your family comes from the Richarte side not the Femat side. You should also note that Femat is spelled Femad, Fermad, Fermat, etc. in the records.

I'm unsure of when your father was born but the civil records from
Aguas, Aguas are pretty complete. Have you tried looking on some of
these films at your local family history center? What year was your
father born? then again his birth certificate might not give you more
info than you already have on his baptism cert.

joseph

ps: also you might have a look in the films section of the group and see
if any of the batch numbers there match any of your research locations.
This might help in your search for those relatives that are back in the
1870's-1880's and before.

How did you hook up with the Texas connection to the revolution? Do you have ancestral lines from Texas?
Did you ride on the float with the Texas connection or did you just help out. Where was Figen, I didn't see her picture.

Yes my ancesters came out of Juarez for several generations going back
to the mid 1700's before they seem to have come from Chihuahua City at
least on my mom's surname ancesters: Perez.

The Who's Who List is Still There... in fact it is now searchable.

As Joseph mentioned, you can simply type a first or last name into the little search window and when you get the results, simply click on the "Users" tab and all the matches will come up.

If you simply want to browse through the user directory, you can do so by going to the FILES section and clicking on the "browse" user directory on the last paragraph, or you can simply go to:

Arturo,

is this List accessible only via password? If so does that mean that it
can't be reached by one of those Spam Bot's?

if it is not reachable to collect email addresses for Spam purposes then
how difficult is it to make the list "edit" available? I'd be willing to
go through and add everyone's email address to their profile and make it
a hyper link if possible.

thanks,

joseph

ps: I just added "bold" to both the words "search" and "browse" for this
feature.

Joseph:

I have taken your suggestions and added email addresses to the who's who profile list. This list is not accessible to spam bots since it is only viewable when you are logged in. It now allows you to click someone on the list and get their full user profile as well, from where you can track their postings, etc.

You can also click their email address and email directly if you have an email program configured with your browser.

Let me know if there are any other such easy improvements that we might be able to make to the site.

wow thank you Arturo this is great. . .little by little you are making
something that was great into something better. In time we'll come up to
speed and these first few months of our learning curve will be looked
upon with amusement.

I "think" (we're in trouble now) that the Username hyperlink might need
to be tweaked. From my end everytime I click on a Username that is
listed on the Who's who list I keep coming back to my profile.

thanks,

The link should be working now Joseph....

This brings up two issues that I had put off due to (paying) workload which I should bring up now...

The first is that there are many members who have not filled out their user profiles and thus they come up blank in the Who's Who list as well as when someone does a location or surname search.

Can everybody please take a moment to go into their user profile and make sure that the information is filled out and correct? It makes the site much more useful for everybody. Click on "My Account" from the side menu, then click the "Edit" tab when your profile comes up. You will then need to go through the first three categories to update all of the information:
1. Account Settings
2. Personal Information
3. Research

Second, I had started on a user manual a couple of months back and never got finished with it. Is there anyone who would be willing to help? I have already got a volunteer to translate, but I would like to get the parts that I have already done edited before I give it to him for translation.

If someone thinks they can take one of the missing chapters, that would be great as well.

in that little seach window put in the members name and click on the
search button

then at the top of the results page you see one tab called "users" next
to the one called "content" select the "users" tabe and you should find
the person listed. Click on that persons name and then you'll have some
tabs at the top one of them is "Contact" where you can contact them
directly.

As it is I'm getting a terrible amount of spam that I'm deleting and
Arturo has suggested not listing the members email address in the open
area because the spam bots will find them and send everyone spam.

Arturo I'm wondering if we can put a "file" in the private area of the
group with a word file that has their names and email addresses? would
this be able to be reached by thos spam bots?

joseph

once you have that person there should be a contact button

I use to never get spam and over the last two months I have been getting about five emails daily. Is this why? I was wondering what happened that all the sudden I started getting all these different spam emails....oh well.

Angie, I have a computer, and this Yahoo account that I use only for Genealogy related subjects. I have always been rather suspicious of the spam that I receive after visiting Family Search. I had not been to the site in some time however, yesterday I was at Family Search...and this morning I had 16 spams.

When I originally joined "Ranchos" I had an AOL account, and used it to access Yahoo. Well, lo and behold...I received a message from AOL...addressed to the name I had used as a password.

Recently, I received a spam, the subject had my name as I sometimes use it on this site inconjunction with my maiden name. I had not used my maiden name in umteen years.

Ahhh the pearls of cyber space.

Yahoo email accounts are among the worst when it comes to user privacy. But
it is all in the user terms of agreement when you sign up. Unfortunately we
rarely read the small print before clicking the OK button.

All that on top of turning each message every user writes into a Yahoo
advertisement. Just check the trailer attached to each of your posts.

So, is there a fix? How about dropping yahoo in favor of another email
provider.

Any email address that appears on the Nuestros Ranchos site is encrypted into special HTML code so that it displays as an email address but does not look like one to spambots (which are reading the HTML code). Thus they should not be able to pick up email addresses that appear on this site.

Just to be safe, however, I suggest everybody be careful about not including email addresses in the messages that they send out to these lists.

Sorry, I got the URL wrong. It is http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/

Once you get the opening page, enter a surname and given name in the field. It will give you a list of people with that name. Click on the one that you feel might be one you are interested in. When the page for that tree opens, you can check the different options on the tabs at the top "Index, Ahnentafel", etc. This will only give you the Ancestry World trees on Rootsweb which are free for viewing.

In order to view the " by subscription only" One World Tree at Ancestry.com (they include the WorldConnect and other trees they have "captured" from various sources) you have to subscribe to that database or you have to go to a Family History Center that has the full subscription to Ancestry.com. However, I don't like the way you have to view those trees. They don't seem to have the Ahnentafel view that shows the generations in order, plus I don't think we should have to pay for viewing trees that otherwise would be free.

I have the link to my Francisco Olague World Connect tree in the files for Ranchos. If you click on my link, it will take you to the Ahnentafel view which shows Francisco, and six generations of his ancestors in Salitrillo and Marecito (from the Tepetongo film) Zacatecas.

Linda, you got it. I think the URL is Rootsweb.worldconnect.com. And yes, I do my family trees using the Ancestry Family Tree online program. I don't have a genealogy software program like PAF, Family Tree, etc on my computer. I use the online program that is on Ancestry.com which holds all those files in their servers (that way if someone steals my computer or it crashes, my trees are safe, plus the public can view them anytime, and I can edit them, update them anytime, etc). And yes, Ancestry Family Tree loads onto Rootsweb's WorldConnect site. Also anyone can upload their gedcoms directly to WorldConnect through Rootsweb ("keeping genealogy free").

The Ancestry Family Tree program is very user friendly, isn't it? However, one has to be careful when setting up new trees not to do so on their One World Tree. That only goes to their program that can only be viewed if you are a subscriber to that part of Ancestry.com, and it is very different than Ancestry Family Tree that loads the trees onto WorldConnect. The OWT only shows the trees in the pedigree chart format, but I like to choose the Ahnentafel view when sending a link to my tree to people. That is the view that is on the link on my Nuestros Ranchos files.

I am a subscriber to Ancestry.com, but I don't subscribe to all their databases. I resent the fact that they are buying up all the genealogy databases that were formerly free on the internet or available from genealogical societies or churches and cemeteries and charging for them individually or by making people subscribe to their "packages". I also have no intention of subscribing to their British Isles databases packages. I will never use them. If I want to help my friends of British or Irish or German descent with their research, I use the Ancestry.com at the local FHC which does subscribe to all their databases.

Yes, I saw your trees on WorldConnect some time ago, since there is an Olague on there (that was my maiden name) and the search brought up your trees. I had asked you about it, but you didn't seem to remember that tree.

Did you move from Everett to B. C. recently?

Yes, Linda, you got it again. MyFamily.com (based in Utah) does business as Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com, etc. They have been buying up as much of the genealogy information that anyone has out there and are now setting up all that info that was formerly free into databases sold as packages (Census, Military, Immigration, etc., British Isles, etc). If you do searches on many of the formerly independent genealogy websites, you will see that more and more of them have come under the umbrella of MyFamily.com and that they all link you to the Ancestry.com website that brings up a page telling you you must subscribe in order to view that information you asked for on your search! They are into money, not genealogy!

I do wish they would give the Arizona Catholic Dioceses an offer they couldn't refuse, since those bishops won't let the LDS church microfilm their records, and I would love to have that information online like FamilySearch.com does. Other dioceses in Texas have refused to let the LDS microfilm their records. Maybe they will cave in when the offer is just too good to refuse. That is why so many genealogical resources are selling their information to Ancestry.com. Some genealogical societies and churches need money, so they sell what they can to the highest bidder. For example, I was so looking forward to one entity's publishing their cemetery records only to find out that they will sell it to Ancestry.com when the project is complete. Bummer. Ancestry has found the golden goose, and we will pay.

Emilie I do remember you asking abt your Olague family from Jerez but I didn't realize where you got the information. We did move from Everett Wa. to Gold River, Vancouver Island when my husband retired 2 weeks ago.. The nearest history center is in Campbell River which is just too far away, almost 1 1 /2 hours away through a national park with winding, 2 lane roads. I have 6 months to concentrate on recording the records I tried to accumulate when I found out we were going to be so far from a history center. We will be going stateside in Oct. for 6 months.. we're snow birds..

Using online services like Ancestry.com to record and preserve records is a good idea. I know many people don't like to share but I figure if I can help someone else who doesn't have the time or resources to find their family then I've done something good by sharing. I was not aware that LDS paid anyone for recording and preserving records. Considering what the condition is of some records one would think any church or program would be glad to have another source to preserve them.. go figure!

thank you for the info, Linda in B.C.

Linda, I meant to say that Ancestry.com, not LDS, is paying people for their databases or for records they have transcribed even before they finish their transcribing projects, such as the burial records of that one church. As for some Catholic Dioceses that won't cooperate, yes, their records are in terrible shape and will soon be lost since they won't preserve them nor let anyone else do it. I was just hoping that Ancestry.com would come up with enough money to break the resistance of the bishops that are contrary to letting their old records be microfilmed or transcribed for the internet. However, the powers that be at the dioceses would ask a lot, since they have the money to preserve the records if they wanted to, they are just not into genealogy and may be leery of handing over records to LDS due to the use of the information to "seal" more souls in the LDS temples.

As for sharing info on WorldConnect, yes, it works both ways. I know that some people might just take my info and tack it onto theirs without doing their own research, but since our e-mail addresses appear on WorldConnect, I also get contacted frequently by people who want more information and who in turn help me get more information. I wish people would realize this, and not hoard their info for that "book" they are going to publish someday and hopefully make a mint on. I am into genealogy, not money or something else.

Emilie, you mention Worldconnect, is that a genealogy site like Ancestry.com or Famlysearch.com? I tried to access it with Worldconnect.com and got nothing...

My first trip to read films at a history center was simple.. a notebook and a couple of pencils.. (I found pencils fade).. My problem was not writing down everything I read, from not copying padrinos and not understanding what I was reading. I did not read or speak Spanish so instead of making a copy of at least one clear record for reference purpose's I just copied surnames I wanted from that one village.. of course I had to do the complete record over in later years but it was a learning experience. I laugh when I look at that notebook now. When I did my first marriage record I didn't realize that family relationships were included so I missed all of that in my copies too. When I discovered much later that one said they were related 3 times removed it all came together as family. Learn as I go and I don't discard my old notebooks even though now I use a laptop for copying records. I used to put records into a notebook, take them home and enter them into my
FamilyTree Maker ancestry program.. double work but I loved it.. Another thing I did not copy in the early years was witness's. I also learned to not take ages as fact, they vary by as much as 15 or 20 years as they get older, from birth, marriage, padrino, witness and death.. My gr-grandmother aged an additional 15 years from marriage to death.. Just some of the things I've learned.

Linda,

I was lucky at first, since something told me I must transcribe all the names in a record. My trouble in the beginning was that I did not develop a pre-printed "fill in the blanks" type of form to do the transcribing on. I got such terrible writer's cramp writing "Parents:", "Paternal grandparents:", "Maternal grandparents:", "Padrinos:" etc over and over again. I had previously tried photocopying most of the microfilmed records, but since I seemed to be related to everyone in a particular village, the photocopying got expensive and tedious to do. I also realized early on that if I had a brick wall, I had to go around it by transcribing the records of people who seemed to be cousins or siblings, etc. Then I would take the sheets and sort out the relationships, and lo and behold, I would find a common ancestor and further investigation would lead me to my direct ancestor that was hiding among his relatives.

Also, since so many of my great great grandfather's brothers were named Jose with a saint name after the "Jose", but I could not find my great-great grandfather's birth record, I finally found him by the process of elimination and his birth order. I knew what his saint name was since it appeared in the records of his children, but his birth record and that of some of his brothers only listed them as Jose, no saint name, yet the records of baptisms would show that other people's sons had the Jose and the same saint name for that time period. I think it was Mr. Ryskamp who said that one must transcribe carefully all the records in a village for people with the same surname, then do comparisons, and the relationships will fall into place. It's true. I have gotten so familiar with all the clans in a village, that were I to be transported to that time and place say in the 1840's, I could stop a fellow and ask him his name, and I would know who his wife was, who his parents wer
e and wh
o his children were. Somehow we end up walking where they walked.

I just looked at the gedcom files section for the first time and found how interesting it is that I made so many mistakes! I don't think I'm alone but boy what a shocker to find the same families under so many different headings, no wonder our ancestors are so hard to find.. For example, it could read De La Cueva, Cueva or Cuevas. V's and B's are interchangable so are they Viramontes or Miramontes, Cortez or Cortes, De La Paz, Paz or Pas.. the same goes for cities or ranchos.. Just in one Rancho I've found it as Los Rodartes, Rodartes and Rodarte... Aros, Aro or Los Haro, Los Haros... so much for me to learn yet.. I don't think I'm the only one who's gotten confused more than once!

I'm finding the same, with Corbera/Corvera. In the IGI 21 records in Zacatecas with the spelling of Corbera; and 44 for Corvera. A couple of the states such as Sinaloa had 132 Corbera/s and 98 Corvera/s. Coahuila- 63 Corbera/s and 30/Corvera/s.. Just to name a few. After a day of researching I almost forgot how to spell the name that I have had for 41 years, Corbera. When adding Corbera/Corvera individuals to my database, I'm indexing all as Corbera, and using the actual spelling found in the document in the "also known as," section of my PAF program.

for the same people. I've struggled with the idea of just making the
surnames the same so they would be listed all together in the
"Individual Index" of FTM. I've kind of done that for my main name
"Puentes" instead of having some "Puente" as the name was originally and
then later some "Puentes" as the name involved into. What I've tried to
do to compensate for that is in the references give the exact names as
they appear in the records. Yes a compromise. So maybe they weren't
mistakes you made just accurate record transcribing. You'd know best.

Joseph and Linda,

This is something that maybe all of us encounter not only with given names or surnames but in places. I have found a given name spelled about 10 different ways, the name of a Rancho also spelled or written many different ways and like Joseph, I opt to write it as written in the record. When writing the notes I am even writing them in spanish as noted in the record because in the process of transcribing a record into english you can lose something in the translation.

I have family members who read my files tell me that I have misspelled something, I will show them a copy of the original/actual record that has Avelar as we spell it today spelled Abelar. I have found in some records my GGG grandfater Mateo Esparza sometimes as Ruiz, sometimes Esparza and sometimes Ruiz de Esparza. While I have not found his birth or baptism record yet or any of his sibling's birth records I look forward to finding them one day to see where they lead me. That is what keeps us engaged in this mysterious journey called genealogy.

Joseph I don't think there is one answer for the problem. I do feel bad for people who are new to genealogy and don't know that the Murillo they are now could have been Morillo in the past or that they need to look under so many different possibilities of spelling. I've learned to accept that I have to seach under more than one spelling but have thought about doing what you did to standardize a surname and then give the record with the "other" spelling, all the names with "De La" as an example since most surnames have dropped it today. The goal is to make it as easy for as many people as possible and yet allow them to find it in the records.. learn as I go.

Linda and Joseph,

I have found the same variations of spellings, so in my family trees on WorldConnect, I have standardized the spellings according to current usage. I figure everyone in the group now has an idea of what the variations in spelling were long ago, but they don't vary that much nowadays.

One thing I have noticed is that for the Vasques/Basques in the old records, they seemed to alternate the spelling of the name in the same record for the different generations. The grand-father is listed as Basquez, then his child is listed as Vasquez, then the grandchild goes back to Basquez. Anybody else notice this?

My Post was in reference to my mother, Maria de Jesus Bravo & Gparents Ladislao Bravo & Maria Tinoco from La Ribera Jalisco. Separately & without mention in my post, I have also been searching (about 2 years) 4 info on my paternal gparents, Bernardino Lopez & Donaciana Gutierres from Guanajuato. Last evening I received an email from Erlinda (Linda in BC) providing me listings for them! Yes, that's excitement you detect in my e-voice! I just wanted to publicly thank Nuestros Ranchos, Alicia and of course, Linda in BC!

At first, I transcribed the names just as they were written, but that made
it hard to keep track of everybody. I've seen Jauregui spelled at least a
dozen different ways. Even dividing my database into two ways of spelling
Quezada made it too hard to keep track of families so for my database I
standardized the spelling. However, in the notes, I indicate the original
spelling of the name as it appears in the document from which I obtained the
name. It works for me.

Sometimes more than accurate transcribing is necessary. There's no
substitute for research experience. For example, I had no idea when I
started researching Nochistlan that Dionicio and Leonicio are often used
interchangeably as are Hermenegildo and Esmeregildo. And I remember
thinking that Rita should be Pieta. It was hard to tell by reading the
scrip of the curate; but as time went by, I found that Rita was actually
quite common whereas Pieta was non-existant for that time frame.

One problem I have that I'm not sure how to fix is that I started out using
the accent marks and the tilde, but when I sent out a GEDCOM file, the
computer would misread everything -- either leaving out letters or
substiting other symbols for the accented letters. I finally went through
my entire database a few years ago and eliminated all the special marks.

However, it's my understanding that the programs are better now, and one can
forward a GEDCOM file without the special letters being distorted. The only
problem is that my database is getting rather large, and the task of
restoring all those special marks seems daunting. (Every José and every
María. Every Nochistlán. Yikes!) Does anyone else have this dilemna?

Another Nuestros Ranchos Jauregui relation

Yoli,
Another member of Nuestros Ranchos, Olivia Jauregui Reyes has some of your same ancestors. Go to≥ FILE≥ MEMBERS GENEAOLOGY≥OLIVIA JAUREGUI REYES≥NICOLAS TRANQULINO JAUREGUI, and you will find in her ancestry, Rosalio Jauregui and Pomposa Gonzales of Nochistlan. I think If remember correctly you were also related to a few other people from this group, It may have been Pat Corbera's husband Tino but I could be mistaken, give it a look.

Digest Etiquette

Hello,

If you are subscribed to the email lists via the Digest mode there are
two important things you must do EVERY TIME:

1) change the subject to reflect the message you are sending. . .do not

robert and yvonne hernandez

i was told by alicia avelar, that you had ancestors from jalpa zacatecas, with the surname viramontes. i am also searching for ancestors from jalpa,my grandfather benjamin viramontes and his brother ramerio.

Jovana,

did you go to the files and under members genealogies look under Robert
Hernandez? I don't know if his file gives information about Jalpa, but I
do know he has a file there. Once you are there you can contact Robert
directly with the "contact" tab for him. Have a look:

so again:

1) log in

2) click on "Files"

3) click on "Members Genealogies"

4) look for Robert Hernandez Baeza

or if that is unsuccessful for you go here:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/14067 [but only use this link if you
can't find it the normal way. . .otherwise you'll be dependante on
someone to supply you with the link every time].

DNA

Will "Ranchos" set up a place in its files for us to upload and
compare our DNA results? It may be helpful for us to be able to
compare our DNA with one another. It's another dimension of research

That's an excellent idea Linda.

I'm going to do so immediately. I will add my YDNA and mtDNA results to my family tree so the results are integrated with my genealogical research.

I've completely transceneded my attachment to my surname in favor of my genetic make up.
Surnames have only been in use for about five, or six hundred years. Our DNA goes back to the origins of our species.

Still, I would like a separate area where our results could be viewed and matched. It would be an invaluable research tool, as well as just plain fun!
