Hello Arturo,

These sound like just the books I need. But I can't find them. The
website is 10 years old and nobody at directory service has ever heard
of the city the publisher (IGHL) is supposed to be in.

The most recent address I have found so far is in St George Utah, but
that phone number is obsolete also. Lyman Platt is a wellknown author

Group tour

Alicia,

That sounds like an excellent idea. If you end up getting a group together
be sure to let us know.

How about discussing this at our next meeting? Can I add it to the agenda?

Maria and all,

It looks like this dream talking could become a reality and sure we can discuss it at our next meeting.

We have 5 dream travelers to date. I think this would make a tour, but of course we would love to have more travelers. Aside from visiting our ancestral towns and cities we can see if we coul have a guest speaker in Mexico do a presentation. Maybe we can get one of the cronistas? The dream continues................Yes, I do belive it would be a good topic for discussion at our next meeting.

Hi Alicia,
Add one more to the "dream list," my husband actually asked if he could be included when I told him about the "dream trip."

Depending on when you all do it, I may join you as well. As some of you know, my parents now live part time in Villa Guerrero, Jalisco now that they are retired.

I would also be more than happy to facilitate Esteban Valdes Salazar meeting and speaking with you all. He is extremely knowledgeable about the microhistory of Colotlan and Tlaltenango not to mention his native Totatiche. He is an avid genealogical researcher and has an almost infective passion for history and genealogy.

There is decent lodging in Colotlan and Totatiche. It gets a bit rougher in the smaller towns. You can probably hire a private bus for a few days to get you between places. Then you would just need a tour guide and someone to help you book lodging.

Arturo,

Thanks for offering up Esteban Valdes, Salazar, hopefully this will become a reality and not just a dream and if it does happen I hope you can join us. Since we are early into the dream/thought process we don't know yet what the best time frame is for everyone. The Northern California group will meet July 29 in Brentwood and Maria Cortez has suggested that we add this Dream Trip to our agenda. Before we meet I would like to get an idea from those people who have expressed an interest in this trip to tell us what month in 2007 you would prefer. If we get a consensus or near consensus on the date or dates we can begin to discuss all the other issues and options and ideas such as guest speaker, lodging, transportation etc.

Aguascalientes and Teocaltiche also have very decent lodging as well as good eateries and as for the tour guide and ground transportation, my cousins in Nochistlan and Tlachichila can assist me with some of these details, unless someone else has other ideas or good resources.

Thanks everyone for your input.

okay. . .hmmm, so who are you going to take with you from the group. Are
you going to Seville?

I've heard that a lot of what you can find in the Archivo de Indias in
Seville can also be found in Mexico City (Ask Mickey Garcia). I also
heard that it takes a lot of preliminary work just to be able to get
into some of the libraries in Spain. Almost like you have to know
someone just to get in. I don't really know just some things I"ve heard.

I don't know if going on the grand tour is in MY future, but I always thought that a trip to the Jalisco-Zacatecas area would at some time coincide with the Mariachi Festival in Guadalajara (September). After all that research - you gotta party, right?
I will look forward to see how all this progresses - Good luck!!

In Guadalajara there is always something going on. In October are "Las fiestas de Octubre", this goes on for one month during October throughout Guadalajara. Every night there are live performances as in music, song and dance, live theatre, poetry readings etc and is spread out throughout the city.

In April Aguascalientes has it's Feria de San Marcos that I believe lasts for a week and is supposed to be spectacular.

Every town has it's yearly Fiestas Patronales, which is the feast of the Patron Saint of each town. I believe Enrique talked about Papiaquis in Nochistlan but I can't recall what month it takes place. My town of Tlachichila Zac is in September, begins the 15th and ends the 28th, it's the feast of San Agustin. It feels and sounds like a Mariachi Festival. There are at least 10 wonderful Mariachis with many of them natives of Tlachichila and Nochistlan as this is an area of the country that produces many musicians. You also have Bandas and Conjuntos Norteños, all in the same plaza and it lasts for 2 weeks.

I will do some research about the various ancestral towns to see when their fiestas take place, Natalie is right you have to party after doing so much research.

I concur with Alicia, in the large cities: Guadaljara, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes something is always going on. All three cities have major universities with major museums, libraries, cultural events as well as fun places to be merry. All three cities are hubs for their region with fine, world class accomodations, some of these hotels were re-adapted to hostels or 5 star hotels; for exaple in Zacatecas their finest hotel was built around a former "bullring"; the Quinta Real. Here's their website: www.quintareal.com.
I was Nochistlan in January. They have a couple of nice small hotels, i stayed at the one accross the street from the "Jardin" - nice. Many of the towns we hail from have very informative websites, check them out. For Fiestas, the link below will take you to Nochistlan's.
http://www.nochistlan.gob.mx/fiestas.html
Nochistlan's papaqui's are in mid-January, the "Fiestas de Octubre, Peregrinaje de la Virgen de Toyahua and "HIjo Ausente" are listed in the site above. El Hijo ausente is the day that Nochistlan welcomes all its sons and daughters back to Nochistlan from all over the world - literally.
Teocaltiche is only 15 minutes from Nochistlan, while Aguascalientes is about an hour. Teocaltiche has a feast in early November.

The pictures I posted recently in the Nuestros Ranchos website are captured moments from the 2006 papaqui.

I may join you in the group tour....at this time i dont want to specify a favorable time for me, usually I can join the group most times fo the year.

well not sure I am going, but things you should consider is getting some
local input on the weather. There is a hot time and a rainy time. The
rainy time could be a challenge as far as getting around. Just what I've
heard so maybe its not that big a deal to consider. Also at certain
times you might get the fiestas. . .maybe around Christmas time. .
.maybe Arturo knows about this.

The area is very arid and there are basically two seasons, a season of mud and a season of dust. The temperatures do vary somewhat, but it never gets really hot because the altitude is so high... unless of course you get down in the Bolanos canyon. The rainy season can be somewhat treacherous for travel in back areas since there are flash floods (heavy tropical rains where no rain has fallen for months) and mud but the roads have improved tremendously in recent years and most paved roads are well drained, etc.

I think the best time of the year to go is in early autumn. There are still lots of rituals related to end of the corn growing season (September) and the weather is ideal then... almost no rain but things are still green and temperatures don't drop so much at night.

The spring is also nice, especially if anybody wants to make a jaunt down to the beach. December and early January are not a good time to go because half of the Mexican immigrants in the US go down and flights are very expensive, it is impossible to find lodging or rental cars, etc.

We can perhaps try to figure out when some of the towns have their Fiestas and try to coordinate around those. These tend to be in the winter however... people historically had less work then I suppose.

I spent 30 days in Mexico in 2003, we went the last week of March and 3 weeks of April. We were in Guadalajara during Easter and everything was closed for abt 4 days.. that was a surprise but the festivities with the churchs were amazing. I was in Guadalajara, Tapalpa, El Grullo, El Limon and then went on by bus to Zacatecas City for 4 days and then into Jerez Zacatecas for a week.. the weather was cool in the evenings and beautiful during the day. We returned to Guadalajara for Easter week.
Weather is something to consider..

Gutierre de Aguila

I have run into a few ancestors who moved to the Totatiche area from Gutierre de Aguila in the early 1700s. I remember discussing with someone that the name of this town had changed to Villanueva (Zacatecas). I was looking through the films for Villanueva and it seems that the early years of that parrish are missing... the only films available appear to be informaciones matrimoniales.

My heart skipped a beat when I read what you had posted about "El Santo Mateo Correra Magallanas." Is it possible that "Correra," is actually "Corvera/Corbera?"
I was working on trying to figure out the following:
Cesarea Corvera Magallanes, b. 27 Aug 1856; bapt 28 Aug 1856, birth place : Rancho de San Juan. Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, Zac. Cesarea daughter of Manuel Corvera y Jesus Magallanes. Manuel son of Trinidad Corvera y Petra Marquez. Jesus daughter of Antonio Magellanes y Jesus Gonsales. I found a marriage record for a Manuel Corbera y Jesus Magallanes 7 Feb 1875 Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, Zac. Their marriage is years after the dates listed above. I'm finding this same situation in another line ( Serrano y Salamanca), strangely 7 Feb is also their marriage date, but in the year of 1877..
RVI Batch - C607137
IGI Batch - M607146.
IGI Batch - C026070 is listed as a batch number, but no other information is given, as to the film # and dates, etc....
A rather interesting research day for me.
I'm coming away with more questions than answers on the Corbera/Corvera; Serrano/Salamanca/Gonzalez ancestry.

I want to aplogize ahead of time for jumping in and not quite
understanding the context. . .aren't you talking about two different
surnames? For example both names are listed in the:

Index to the Enciclopedia Heráldica Hispano-Americana of Alberto and
Arturo García Carraffa

found at this URL: http://www.loc.gov/rr/hispanic/geneal/index_gc.html

Here is the results for Corbera:
Corbera 27 157

Here are the results for Correa (well I didn't find it by itself):
Correa Sotomayor 2 143

Maybe you all live close to one of the many libraries that own these
volumes you can have a look at the history of the names.

No problem Joseph, you can "jump in, " any time... While surfing Ranchos I came across a posting that mentioned "El Santo Mateo Correra Magallanas." I thought that maybe "Correra," could have been a typo error for Corbera. is a combo surname that I had come across for a Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, Zac. family of Manuel Corvera y Jesus Magallanes, in the time frame that I was researching.

Thank you for sharing your family pictures. The 7 Dwarfs cartoon in Spanish was so funny, both Tino and I enjoyed a good laugh... thank you!

You should get an email when posted to the group and if it's something

Thank you for your input. We did not mean to make this setup any more formal than the last one. The mailing lists work just the same, so please contribute as you see fit.

As far as my research... I have taken some time off trying to find new information and have begun to more formally compile the information that I have. I have begun writing a book on the historical ethnography of the Totatiche area along with my father's genealogy.

Esteban Valdes Salazar, the local historian in Totatiche is currently writing a book on the Pinedos and Ortegas of Totatiche so I am waiting for that before I go further on my mother's genealogy since she is both a Pinedo and an Ortega.

As part of my formal compilation I have begun taking systematic scans of documents in my databases film by film. I am able to scan directly to a JPEG file and the quality is amazing. I then adjust the contrast and brightness, clean them up a bit and upload them. It works great as a filing system.

"partera" translates as midwife. In these pueblos there were obviously no doctors so births were attended to by women who had learned the art of aiding in childbirth through their mothers, aunts, etc. who had performed the same function.

Interesting tidbit, as I was reading through the Luz Montejano's Guadalajara dispensations book I ran across a couple of dispensations where midwife's were called in as expert witnesses to attest to women's virginity in cases of questionable fidelity (i.e. the woman was accused of having had relations with a sibling or father of the pretenso)

Are the films that are listed under the "film," tab, without a batch number, does that denote that a batch is not available for that given film?

The answer to your question below is "most likely yes". We originally developed the database on the old site to keep track of what films people had on indefinite loan at their local FHC so that other members might be able to ask them to look up something. We eventually decided to start adding batch numbers since these are very useful and now we have linked the batch numbers directly to the familysearch website to make lookups easier.

So basically, if someone has entered a film without a batch number they probably did so because they have the film on indefinite loan and one would expect that if it were indexed they would have entered the batch number along with their names but you never know....

Arturo,
Thank you... I phoned the LDS Temple FHC in Oakland, CA. and asked if they had a reverse listing, batch numbers that were assigned to a given film number... the answer was 'no." But they (three different people) all agreed that all the batch numbers for a given film will appear on the actual film. The next I'm in our local FHC, I'll check to see if that's a factual statement.

Joseph,
I didn't see anything that looked like a reference to a batch number on the example that you posted. It's possible that batch numbers appear through the film, but I'm not sure. I'll be going to our local FHC on Tuesday to order film, and I'll ask them to run a film to see if through the film batch numbers are noted. It's resonable to think that more than one batch number would be used for a given film, with all the records found on one film. I maybe wrong.

I didn't realize that I was supposed to provide the batch numbers as well
for the films I have on indefinite loan at the local FHC where I live
(Rancho Cucamonga, California).

Can I insert them myself or should I send the list to someone. Each of the
films I have on loan does have a corresponding batch number. By the way
some films have two batch numbers; for example, a film of bautismos will
have one batch number for the females and another for the male children.

Hi Deena,

It's been a long time since we've exchanged e-mails. You were a "God sent," in helping me with my husband's maternal ancestry.

Now, I think you have answered the question about batch numbers, in that it's possible to have more than one batch number for a given film, with batch numbers being through out the film.

Today, I've come across only batch numbers for records in the IGI. No additional info, just a batch number.

Plus now I think the reason for not finding the Corbera/Corvera line is that it may have been indexed incorrectly as Correra, and other spelling variations. Just when one thinks they pretty much have "all the answers," in researching one's "roots," something new "pops," up.

Hope to meet with you at one of the Ranchos meetings, or on the "dream trip.".

Again, I sincerely appreciate all the help that you gave me when I was first starting out on this "Journey in Nochistlan." ;-).

Sincerely,
Pat Corbera

Hi Marge,
On my father-in-law's birth record/s (both church and civil) the spelling is Corvera. I read that the letter " v " is interchangeable with the letter " b, " in Mexican vital records, but I didn't think of a double "r," situation, as in Correra. As far as the records found on familysearch.org, I believe the spelling variations are being cause by LDS indexing, not being familiar with Mexican/Spanish surnames, plus the poor penmanship of priests. . The next best thing I need to do is to create a "spelling variation," listing, and then check it with LDS online records. Thank you Marge, I've added your suggestion to my surname variation list...

I didn't realize that I was supposed to provide the batch numbers.........

Deena,

Not to worry about batch #'s, I inserted them when I attached my name to yours on the films we both have on permanent hold when I added additional film numbers. The films for Nochistlan without batch numbers are films after 1875 for Baptisms and after 1885 for marriages. I added them to the data base even though there is no benefit in terms of calling up the batch number but I use it to look up a film number for a particular town or area without having to go to family search.org and I kind of assumed that other people would do the same.
Joseph and Arturo, should I have omitted those films without batch numbers?

No Alicia,

with or without batch numbers if you own (have on permanent hold) them
submit them. Later if you find "a" batch number associated with a film
and if its not already listed then by all means add it. In fact if you
find a batch number its a good idea to then change the last digit upward
and then downward to find other batch numbers.

forexample:

for colotlan these are the batch numbers:

C602861
C602862
C602863
C602864
C602865
C602866
C602867
C602868
C602869
C604641
C604642
C604643
C604644
C604645
C604646

see how the batches "sometimes" only changed by one digit at the end of
the batch number. So for example if you came across this one: C602866
you would have been able to find 8 other batch numbers simply by
changing the "6" at the end to 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and then to 7, 8, 9

please ask if that explanation didn't quite make sense I'd be glad to
explain further.

Also you have to try tossing in a J or K in substitution for the C as
they separate the Boy Children from the Girl Children at times.

Well this is the way I do it when I find a batch number for a new area
or one that I hadn't been able to find batch numbers before.

If you have the batch numbers it would be helpful to others if you
supply them, but if you don't. . .well its better to include your films

Emily,

I once encountered a marriage document that after having been fully entered, it was x'd out with one big X and it said no vale. It was followed by the same name of one of the parties but it had a different spouse's name with a different marriage date. I did not copy it because it wasn't one of my ancestors but it did catch my eye because it was so unusual.

The point I was trying to make was even if Ranchos was totally in Spanish, it would be "fun," maybe "fun," was the wrong word, it would be beneficial to try and figure out what was being said. Ranchos website is a fountain of information, a shame to pass it up because of a language barrier. Thank goodness that same language barrier didn't stop our ancestors from migrating to points all over the world. Yes, you're right I only speak English, but it hasn't stop me from joining list groups of various languages.

Me "insensitive," never, I even cry at some commericals. It's our concern and caring that makes us vocal on certain issues. One must always try to see the other side of the "coin."
My mom always said that I had to have the last word... so this is my last word... hope it's yours also. ;-)). Bet we're related! .

Ana Valdes-Macias, Masias-Valades

For Ernie Alderete,

An old post of yours about Petronila MOCTEZUMA mentioned Anna VALADES Masias who married Jose Manuel ROMO DE VIVAR.
Could she be Anna MASIAS Valades, born btw 1710-1720 probably in Aguascalientes? I've come across this MASIAS-Valades or Balades combination occasionally in the records, sometimes as MASIAS-Valdez.

It could well be the same lady. The dates add up. If she married Jose Miguel Romo de Vivar first. He was born in 1702 in Rincon de Romos, Aguascalientes.

He must have died after the birth of his son, Juan Antonio Romo de Vivar, who was born in August 1726.

Thanks for contacting me. Do you have anything else on her?

Hi Irma,
You are the smart side of the family I can never retain all those words in my brain. Anyways, we are going to be in Cameron Park on Saturday for the fireworks again this year. We are going to be at the Connely's friends of our current neighbors. Their daughter Christina (I know her as CJ) is the one that knows your kids. We will be in Georgia from the end of June until early July, just in case you think I am ignoring you.

Santos, with viewing the films for Tlaltenango, do you recall seeing a
reference to Iglesia de Santo Tomas Apostol de Momax? My
father-in-law's birth record has the following information, but I've
been unable to locate the film for this parish so that I can located
birth records of his siblings.

Time frame: 1894
Rancho de Los Pintos...
En la Capilla de Momax, ayuda de Parrouquia de Tlaltenango.

Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank You,
Pat Silva Corbera

I have just added my name to some of the existing film numbers for
Momax, Jerez, Atolinga, and Tlaltenango which I have on long term.

Since I live within walking distance (not that I would walk it!!!) to
the Family History Center I would be happy to make hard copies of any
records members would find with "batch numbers", and send you the copy.

I have about 21 films for Tlaltenango, 9 for Momax, and 1 each for
Jerez, and Atolinga.

I have 6 films of death records, and 3 baptisms without batch numbers
for Tlaltenango. If I am able to find those batch numbers, then I will
add these films to the list.

Currently, I am at a "brick wall" with my research so, if I can be of
assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.

Albums

I would like to invite all the members of the group to visit the Albums section of our site. There are very interesting and beautiful pictures in the albums. If you have not had a chance to visit this section yet, I suggest you plan to visit it the next time you find some free time (who 's got that?) to explore ALL of the albums. Consider adding your favorite pictures to the collection for the benefit and enjoyment of the group.

John, Thank you for your announcement about the Albums section. I was unaware of your photos. You certainly are a fantastic photographer, all of the photos are so breath taking, as well as the photos from the museums.

The entire area is so inviting. Okay, Alicia Carrillo, lets start packing~~~~

I posted a few pictures in the "Albums" section a few weeks ago. (with Joseph's help). If you are interested in: Santo Toribio in Santa Ana, Teocaltiche, Arandas, Rancho Los Portales in Jalostotitlán and coins of Nueva España, please visit: John Gonzalez's Pix album.

The best way to see the pictures in their finest detail, is in their full size. I am sure some of you already know how to do that. If you are a newcomer or have never visited the "Albums" section follow these simple instructions:

1.-Log in to the Nuestro Ranchos site.
2.-Select the "Albums" tab
3.-Select "Ranchos y Ciudades" Here, you can start with the first album, look at all the pictures in it, and then work through the rest of the albums in sequence to make sure you get to see them all.
4.-Click on a picture
5.- Click on the same picture again. You will see the picture in a clean screen, i.e. without the menus on the right side.
6.-Place your mouse cursor over the picture and hold it there for a couple of seconds. A button will appear at the bottom right side, click on it to see the picture in its finest detail. If the picture is bigger than your screen, you'll see the vertical and horizontal standard bars to move it.

There is a big difference in looking at small picture and looking at it full size to appreciate its finest detail, it is an "eye opener". (check out the ones fron Zacatecas)

Note: Not all of the pictures will expand to fill your screen.

Enjoy.

Vamonos Helyn,

And anyone else in the group. Helyn and I were dream talking..........while dream talking we were putting together a group tour to Mexico. We would hire a group van and driver to take us to our collective ancestral cities or towns such as Tlaltenango, Momax, Colotlan, Jalpa, Calvillo, Aguascalientes, Teocaltiche, Nochistlan etc etc.

When we went for my brother's wedding in Guadalajara in 1997, my husband hired the van driver at the airport. The driver hired someone to take his place for those 7 days. We rented a suburban, came back, picked him up allowing him time to pack his bags and notify his family that he would be away for 7 days.

While most of the time was spent either in or close to Guadalajara, we did go to Tonala, Nochistlan, Tlachichila and Zapotlanejo. We paid for his meals and lodging if outside of Guadalajara, if in Guadalajara he went home for the evening.

So you see this dream talking has legs, it is doable if we think this is something we might want to do.

The dreamer,
Alicia

Dream talking, huh?

I love your idea....we did the same thing when we went to Puerto Vallarta
and Cancun. We hired the driver and his van to take us around and paid for the
meals (he went home at night). It wasn't inexpensive (about $100.00 per
day), but it was worth it because we got to hear the history of the towns, were
taken places no tourists would have gone (and some places where they did go),
ate area local places (both inexpensive/delicious and pricier ones).

If you want to go from dreaming to reality....I would be the first to
volunteer to go with you guys next summer. I have so wanted to see
Tlalatenango....but most of my family members are not interested.

Hola Sra. Carillo:
I am a new member of the group with special interest in the Zacatecan cities
you noted in your dream tour. I would be interested in going if someone
organizes such a tour. Keep me informed if your plans grow legs.

I would love to "dream along," also. Hope the project grows from "legs," to "wheels." This would be a great opportunity for someone like me that doesn't speak, nor understands the spoken Spanish word, but so willing to participate.

thanks John, I appreciate you taking the time to teach. Every little
bit helps and does take some of the pressure off Arturo, Rosalinda and
I. So if any others of you want to chip in with a brief explanation of
parts of the site you enjoy please do. This kind of teaching creates and
stimulates discussion. It was great to teach the use of the site and
share great content with it. A lesson for me to learn as well.

Remember this group is your group not mine, not Arturo's, not
Rosalinda's, but our's. It will become what you make of it and from the
looks of it John has committed himself to make it a good one. thanks John

New Photos uploaded

Hi, primos y primas. I've loaded a few new photos to my photo album if you want to take a peek. I'm particularly upload challenged...I've tried uploading stuff before and I'm sure it's whirling around in the stratosphere somewhere and destined never to alight anywhere.
