I am interested in your historical novel and other historical CDs. What source do you use to

Hi all!  I've waited a week for responses to my questions, and the vast majority prefer a meeting in the Los Angeles area.  It appears most are east of LA (I'm in Diamond Bar, myself).  February is the month most requested.  It's not too late!  If you haven't responded, please do so now, so I can count you in on the fiesta!

Now, I'm going to ask you to respond with your preference of potential dates.  I assume a Saturday would be best, and I'm avoiding the weekend before Valentine's Day, for obvious reasons.  Please select the best day.

In your response (which you can email me, so we don't bog down the group) please answer the following questions:

1.  Would you prefer February

Oral Histories

I have read lots, of messages about oral histories, here on Ranchos.
I just wanted to say, record those histories. So that they are not
lost, to the future generations.

I say this, because recently I took, on some new clients, whose
ancestry is about 80% comanche indians. With a few ancestors, who
where Mexican or spanish captives, that were captured and raised by
the comanches, during the early 1800's. All that they have to work
with, is oral histories. The comanches did not have a written
language, until they were bought, into the reservations. And when a
person dies, they don't speak the person's name again.

So, like I said. Record your oral histories, so that you posterity,
can know them, and can get to know you.

Jonathan

I have this comment, it´s anecdotic. My older brother once ask a friend to give a certain message to somebodyelse, at the end he remarked "...tell him Don Guillermo said so" I promptly said "hey! you must not refer to yourself as Don, Don is a prize you earn from been an honest man! when people start calling you "Don" you realize that you had been an honest man! It is a sign of prestige.  My father is called Don Nicolas (which make me proud), and he never refers to himself as "Don". Just a cultural bit. Have Joyeus celebrations!   LeticiaLeon

Yusuf: Names 's' and 'z'/HOHOHO

Jose,

Thanks for your generous response.  I will have to return home before I can deal with your suggestion about making a podcast.  I'm visiting my son in Texas and will return after Jan. 4 next year.  It sounds like a good idea to me.  It would give me something new to do.

My experience has been that "Je." is the abbreviation for "Jose".  "Jn." is usually the abbreviation for "Juan".  I have not seen the "Je." used interchangeably.  "Jph." is also another short form for either "Josef"  or "Joseph".

Your question about "Puente" vs. "Puentes" is trickier to answer.  I'm sure you are aware that it comes from the Latin word for bridge, ponte.  It could be a mistaken application of the linguists strategy for  forming surnames from Gothic given names by adding "es".  Examples are: alvaro > alvares (son of alvaro); benito > benites; sancho > sanchez; rodrigo > rodrigues.  The root word for Puentes is not of Gothic origin but that doesn't prevent one from treating it as such.  The

The way I heard it from my Jesuit priest friend is that early in the Conquest
the Catholic church decided to give  names to Indians of only known
saints or martyrs of the Church.  Of course, almost all of them were
early Roman and Greek martyrs. I think this was done because as all conquering
armies go about their business, some individuals  decide to have a little
nasty fun with names with people that do not speak their language.
I had plenty of experience with that while working for the INS. A

Zenobio= Cenobio(a)
Senobio(a)= Zenon=Cenon(a)=Senon(a) a variation of the

Also spelled Xenon, Xenona.  I have those and plenty

Actually, they sound more like
Mexicans.

If you can get it in your area, try to
watch a novela called  'Alborada".  It's a historical novel about
Mexico during the early 1800s.  It'll give you a good idea of Mexico during
that time. There are other historical novelas about Mexico you can either get on
tape or CD.

It  covers costuming, vanilla plantations, duelos,
thieves, people with titles, religious orders, Jewish relations, Catholic
Church, commerce with central America, la Nao de la China, ports of call,
commerce with other latinamerican countries (ties were closer than we think),
cochinilla, horses, carruajes, swordfighting,  births (how registrations
were not aways true), legitimate and illegitimate, morals, etc.

Regarding hermanito, manito:  this terminology is

new converts that they were hermanitos, so is that

Here's a good one from my family tree--

My grandfather's sister, Rafaela, married my grandmother's
brother.  Thirteen years later my grandparents get married.  So,
my dad has a set of first cousins whom I call "double-first cousins," since
they're his cousins through both their mom's and dad's
sides.

Thanks! Yes, I know where my name derives from, but it's just not the same because everyone calls me "Peggy Sue" "Peggy Lou", or "Peggy Ann"....
But, I didn't know that a Margarita was a daisy! I love that flower...it looks so happy and friendly.

Thanks for the kind words!
Again, Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!!

Hi everyone!  I feel like I am coming in late into
this conversation, nevertheless, here's my  2-bit
contribution.

I agree with Ed.  I just received
more results from my DNA research.  My Indian branch, which has thought of
themselves as Indians  (Tlaxcalans) have just received their dna
results
  which
indicate that they descend from a male line in northwest Europe (more closely
related to the Vikings than the Spanish). It is haplpogroup I1a.

    Everybody is surprised (including one
of my doctor cousins who simply refuses to acknowledge the truth, never mind we
the tests were run more than once on more than one individyal, by more than
one company). It turns out that there is no memory in the family of anyone being
Spanish on that side.  For the last 300+ years, no one has said that they
were mestizos, only Indian was mentioned on that male line. In fact, we even
have stories about their fights with the Spanish and how they finally joined the
Spanish. There

I started my genealogy research after we named our
last child. But recently I told my wife, if I had
known the names of my great---grandparents, uncles,
and aunts, I would have named our children after them.
She saw my list, and told me "No, Way!" In that
case, I would of just given their middle names, like
or not, since I usually gave her first choice of
picking the first names.

I still think our early ancestor's names were
beautiful.

Yusuf: Names 's' and 'z'/HOHOHO

you said: I hope I sort of answered your question

David. . .fabulous answer and I'm so glad I asked.

thanks for taking the time to share with us things we need to hear more
about and absorb. In fact why not consider adding a little here and
there and tossing in a few references and producing a podcast on this
subject. It is something that many many people need to hear and I'd be
very happy to archive your message in both Audio and written form on the
NFU podcast. What do you think?

And while we're at it what do you have to say about the addition or
subtraction of the "s" on names for example my name: Puentes. In the
older records I only see "Puente" but in the newer records it starts
showing up and persisting as "Puentes." Some folks now a days get this
big "tude" about "We are NOT Puente, we are PUENTES!" As for me I know
I'm a Puente but somewhere down the line the name got modified. . .and i
used to think it changed in the US but no, I see the change happening
in
