Good news . . . the US House hearing for the establishing a new national
museum in D.C. dedicated to Latino arts, history, and culture went quite
well. I will try and get the information about what the Senate is doing
for the May issue.

My wife Gloria and I are still here, Xossef. You can't lose us that easily. We're slow but steady...como las tortugas. We don't have any great grandchildren yet. Our latest grandchild is Elena Lin, 8 months old. Her father is our youngest son, Eduardo Mateo Cancio DELGADO Calvillo. Her mother is Janeen Louie Wong, fourth generation Chinese-American. Elena's GGGGGGGGGParents are: Pedro de Campos and Xacinntta de Espinossa from Pinos, Zacatecas. I estimate their birth at 1660/1665. That's on my father's side. Gloria would have to do her own calculation for her side.

We are in Albany, CA. How does Elena get to Pinos? Here goes: Oxnard, CA (me)>Tepatitlan, Jal(dad)>Aguas, Ags(GP)>el Mesquite, Encarnacion de Diaz, Jal(married Garcia Espitia)>el Capulin, Jal>la Sieneguita, Jal>Lagos de Moreno, Jal(Espitia married De Campos)>Pinos. Considering that I have ancestors who were Piro, Chiricahua, Tepecan or , Basque and Gloria is half Puerto Rican including African, Taino, Basque and yet-to-be determined others...poor Elena will need a pamphlet to figure out exactly what kind of a "salad" she is. Fascinating...huh?

I have posted a couple of chapters of a book I just purchased in the Files section. For anyone interested in historical ethnography or the issue of castes and slavery in Mexico, it is the seminal work on Mexican black ethnohistory.

The book is a wealth of primary source materials on demographics and the ethnohistory of colonial Mexico.

I have included the two parts with the most numerical data but there are other chapters with excepts from archival documents on the daily life, social mobility, etc. of blacks and other "castas" in Nueva Espana.

From the jacket:

The first edition of this book, only six years after the expansion continent-wide of the indigenist movement born in Mexico, rediscovered our portion of America and that in her veins ran not ony indigenous blook, mixed with the white heritage that came with the European conquistadores, but also that which was imported from a part of Africa.

Well.........I GIVE
UP!!!   :-)     I am here in beautiful Switzerland
trying to be patient about a lot of things......but......I CANNOT figure out how
to respond to a message on the new "Nuestros Ranchos" website!   I
feel so dumb!!   I went to the new website......logged in......read
the BEAUTIFUL story by Joseph "Porque estas aqui, Muchacha?" and wanted to
comment on it but did not know how to do a reply to that
message.....HELP???

At this point we have roughly 40%-50% of the group members moved over
(this is not good news).

Don't worry. . .soon the group will be back to what most will consider
to be normal. As far as email delivery I don't think anyone will be
able to tell the difference between the Yahoo Ranchos and the Nuestros
Ranchos sites. (And yes those pesky double postings will stop, but
during this transition time they have been necessary). The main thing
is that you subscribe yourself to one, two or all three of the email
distribution lists and then "reply" to those confirmation emails.
Hijola, aren't you guys getting tired of hearing of those confirmation
emails? Once that is done you will never have to do anything again
unless you decide to change from individual emails to Digest or from
Digest to individual emails. In fact if you are ever going on vacation
or just don't want emails sent to you there is an option to set you
subscription to "no mail" and then you can just go to the
http://nuestrosranchos.org site and read the messages online.



Anyway like I said on 31 March 2006 the Yahoo Groups will in effect
stop functioning as a group. If you take a look at the Yahoo
Description page you can see that it has been savagely modified to
point people to the http://nuestrosranchos.org site. My hope is that as
the small percent of the 30-50% of those that have not retrieved their
passwords get the message that the Yahoo group has closed they might go
to the website and see a message with the "arrow" pointing them in the
right direction.

Does anyone have access to the dispensation records for people married in
Tepetongo-Parish of Jerez) around 1829? 
 
I have a marriage record for the brother of my ggg-grandfather, Jose
Valentin Olague.  The brother's name is Dionisio Olague, and he married a
Ma. Juliana Valdes on 7/26/1829 in Tepetongo, Zacatecas.  He was born in
Salitrillo in 1809 and she was born in Aguichote (sp?) in 1813.  His
parents were Paulin Olague and Espiridiana [Maria del Espiritu Santo] Mata, her
parents were Jose Maria Valdes and Dionisia Zuniga.  The padrinos were
Anto. Olague and Tomasa Olague, the witnesses were Don Antonio Gomes and
Fernanda Vaes.
 
In the body of the marriage record there is a statement that I roughly
translate to: "required dispensation for the 4th degree of affinity").  I
would like to see the dispensation record.

I am getting over my
jet lag......finally!   I arrived in Switzerland almost a week ago but
it takes me quite a while to get back to normal!  :-)
 
I had an e-mail from
Kitty Cortez asking which cities will be researched while we are in SLC in
October.  Kitty and Rich have offered to get the films ready for us but
they need to know which film you will need. 
 
TO THOSE
WHO ARE INTERESTED IN GOING ON THE TRIP TO SLC IN OCTOBER: 
Please  check over your research that you will be doing and let
us know which places you will need film for.   It is possible that
Kitty and Rich already have that film at the FHC and this will certainly speed
things for you.
 
I know it is still
quite a few months until October but it is not to early to get prepared. 
So please look over the work you will be doing in SLC and give us an idea of
which places you will need film for......Thanks!

soon after, the info I had provided was being offered for sale.
I have a cousin who had the same experience.
Therefore, I have learned: do not give ancestry.com ANY info: they will sell it back to you and to anyone else they can.

I haven't been able to figure out a way to share my research records so I posted them on Ancestry.com and put the list of names from the index into my file account in Nuestros Ranchos. When opening it warns of "Macros" bu I have no idea what that is, can someone inform me of the meaning? I'm always happy when someone contacts me to say they are just starting their seach for ancestors and my files helped them. I share them because I have the time and resources that many others may not. I find it hard when someone contacts me and then says they don't want family records online since they are public domain on Familysearch.. Has anyone else had any of these problems in doing research and sharing records? How did you resolve the issue?

Coyote, Mulatto, Negro

The Indigenous* community need go no further than the baptism records of
the late 18th century and early 19th century to find that a significant
percentage of the population was Black. The scribes had many terms to
describe the percentages of a persons racial lineage:

1. Mestizo: Spanish father and Indian mother
2. Castizo: Spanish father and Mestizo mother
3. Espomolo: Spanish mother and Castizo father
4. Mulatto: Spanish and black African
5. Moor: Spanish and Mulatto
6. Albino: Spanish father and Moor mother
7. Throwback: Spanish father and Albino mother
8. Wolf: Throwback father and Indian mother
9. Zambiago: Wolf father and Indian mother
10. Cambujo: Zambiago father and Indian mother
11. Alvarazado: Cambujo father and Mulatto mother
12. Borquino: Alvarazado father and Mulatto mother

My eyes were opened widely when I found out my paternal GGG-Grandmother,
Maria Benita del Refugio Miranda (dob: January 7, 1801) from the
Tepetongo, Zacatecas area was called a "Coyote." Then I discovered
others from this area were referred to as Mulatto and Negro. On my
maternal side I found that my Mt-DNA halogroup was L1a which also
pointed me to this description:

"This haplogroup dates to approximately 40,000 years ago, and is
detected in highest frequency in sub-equatorial Africa."

We as people of the Indigenous* race need to open our eyes and realize
that a significant percentage of us should look on members of the Black
Race not only as our fellow brothers in the human race, but also as
possible "Primos" as common blood courses through our veins.

Coming soon to the Nuestra Familia Unida Podcast Project will be poetry
and educational material of the highest possible level to discuss the
African presence and life in Colonial Mexico and Latin America.

*(as in Latina/Latino, Hispanic, Chicana/Chicano, Mexicana/Mexicano, and

9. Review the information in the Personal Information category. Enter
your name, location and geographic areas and surnames of research.
10. Review the Mailing Lists settings, and subscribe to the mailing
lists per the instructions below. This is very important. If you
do not sign up for the mailing lists, any messages that you post
will not get distributed to the group!

Instructions for signing up for the mailing lists is as follows:

1. Click on the mailing lists menu option on the right hand menu or
click on the mailing lists menu item when editing your account in
step 8 above.
2. Click on the type of subscription you would like for each of the
three mailing lists. You must initially subscribe to receiving all
email or daily digests. Once you have gone confirmed your
subscription (next step) you can change back your settings to "No
Email" which allows you to send messages to the list but not
receive any messages from the list, i.e. you will be able to read
messages only by going onto the website.
3. You will receive a message asking for confirmation of your email
address for each of the mailing lists to which you subscribe. If
you sign up for all three, you will receive three separate
messages. Simply reply to each message to confirm your subscription.
4. Once you have registered for a list, the messages that you post
will get distributed to the group. You can post in any of the
three Forums or via email to any one of the three lists and the
messages will automatically get posted to the website and get
distributed to those signed up for the new Nuestros Ranchos list
as well as the old YahooGroups list. The posting addresses are
general@nuestrosranchos.org, research@nuestrosranchos.org, or
announce@nuestrosranchos.org.

I just got some valuable information that has allowed me to definitively connect a couple of my lineages to the Escobedo clan of Francisco Escobedo, founder of Monte Escobedo. This family married into nearly all of the prominent families in Jerez, Zacatecas so I have been persuing around the web and have come up on a couple of useful resources.

One is an online exposition of the genealogical research of someone whose roots are in Jerez... so there is tons of genealogical information on those old Jerez families: Carlos y Godoy, Llanos y Valdes, Escobedo, De Avila, De la Torre, etc.

The other is the history of the foundation of Jerez written by Leonardo de la Torre Berumen. I have posted this in the Books and Articles files section. It has the names of the first settlers in Jerez, which are many of the same names in the previously mentioned website.

As the countdown gets closer to zero, I want to emphasize to everybody how important it is to sign up for the new mailing lists. In a few days the Yahoo!Groups ranchos list will no longer distribute any messages and unless you have signed up for the new mailing lists on the Nuestros Ranchos site you will no longer receive emails with new postings AND you will NOT BE ABLE TO POST to any of the new lists.

I know that Joseph has moved over a number of people to the site and in the process signed them up for the mailing lists, but the process requires that the person who is signed up respond to the confirmation emails they receive. This is to ensure that the email address is valid and that the person ideed requested to be signed up for the lists.

If you do not reply to these messages, you are NOT signed up for the lists, even if it shows that you are on the Nuestros Ranchos website. If you cannot find the confirmation messages that you received initially, please log on to Nuestros Ranchos and click on "Mailing Lists" and unsubscribe yourself from the lists, click "Submit" and then go back into "Mailing Lists" and re-subscribe yourself. You should receive a new set of confirmation messages in a few minutes. All you need to do is click REPLY in your email program and send off the message... simple as that... but if you don't complete this step your sign up process in NOT complete.
