La Barca Jalisco Briseño, GODINEZ, BARRAGAN

Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008

Dear Canito--

I am going to Santa Rita, Ayotlan, Jalisco, for one week at the end of November. One of the names you are apparently interested in is Briseno and so am I. Here is what I have:

Atilano GODINEZ son of
Claudio GODINEZ and Casimira MACIEL

Married 11 Nov 1858 in La Barca, Jalisco, to

Paula BRISENO daughter of

Antonio BRISENO and Andrea JIMENEZ

Children of Atilano and Paula:

1. Maria Florencia GODINEZ baptized 28 Oct 1861 in Ayo el Chico

2. Maria Placida GODINEZ baptized 13 Oct 1867 in Ayo el Chico

3. Maria Delfina GODINEZ baptized 30 Dec 1869 in Ayo el Chico
mar. to Ysabel BRISENO son of Tomas BRICENO and Ysabel NAVARRO
child of Ysabel and Delfina was:
Jose Margarito BRISENO born 4 Dec 1885 in Santa Rita, Ayo el Chico
who married Leodegracia BERNA on
10 May 1909 in Ayo el Chico, Jalisco

4. Serapio GODINEZ born 1872?
mar. Maria Juana NUNEZ daug. of Victor NUNEZ and Luis GODINEZ
child of Serapio and Maria Juana was:
Maria Guadalupe GODINEZ 22 Dec 1915 in Santa Rita, Ayo el Chico

5. Pragedis GODINEZ born 1875?
mar. Dolores GONZALEZ daug. of Gumesindo GONZALEZ and Refugio PEREZ
their child Leonor GODINEZ born 23 Jan 1920 in Santa Rita,
Ayo el Chico, Jalisco

These are not my GODINEZ lines but with the families coming from La Barca into Santa Rita, it is all rather interesting to me. Besides, I am researching these lines for a fellow who is GODINEZ.

Another family name I am interested in is BARRAGAN and they seem to have been in El Carmen, La Barca, Jalisco.

One of my friends, named Esther has ancestors in Govenador and Portezuelo, which are also in the municipio of La Barca.

Does any of this ring a bell with you?

Sincerely,
Patricia Burton
San Diego, Ca.

Started in 1992 and affiliated with the Lozano Long Institute of Latin
American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, the Latin American
Network Information Center () is designed to "facilitate access to
Internet-based information to, from, or on Latin America." Their site was
redesigned in the spring of 2008, and currently their various directories
contain over 12,000 unique URLs for use by the general public. These links
can be browsed by subject headings or by country, and visitors can look into
more discrete topical headings like "food", "political science", and "social
work". Along with these high-quality links, visitors can then click on over
to their "Digital Initiatives" area. Here they will find digital collections
that cover documents from the New Mexican Revolution and the full-text Fidel
Castro Speech database. Visitors will also appreciate that many of the
site's resources are available in Spanish and Portuguese. [KMG]

The Tarahumara people of northern Mexico are well known for their long-
distance running ability, and they have survived a variety of challenges
over the past five hundred years, including the influx of Spanish
conquistadors into their region. Recently, National Geographic sent Cynthia
Gorney and photographer Robb Kendrick to take an investigative look into
this unique group of people. Visitors can read their account here on this
interactive feature, which contains both the published text and the
accompanying photographs. The article looks at how the Tarahumara are coping
with the increasing pressures of modernity, along with offering some
commentary on their own cultural and social milieu. Additionally, visitors
should not miss the GeoPedia article on the Tarahumara, as it features other
online resources about them and an extensive bibliography. [KMG]

There are several genealogists here in the region that might be able to help

Dia de los Muertos

I know I am really late asking this - and I am just asking our of curiosity - but did anyone set up an ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos, to honor and remember those family members who had passed on.
I wanted to do so , but the death of my dear daughter last month ... well, I just couldn't quite do it. Perhaps I will get back to setting up an ofrenda next year. My son-in-law (non-hispanic) and two young grand-daughters set up a small ofrenda - the little one, 3 -1/2 yrs, wanted to put "everything" on the ofrenda, because "mommy would love it". (It was his first experience - I appreciate that he made the effort to share his wife's heritage with their children.)
However - if you did set up an ofrenda to remember loved ones and antepasados, could you share what you did - or perhaps share a photo.

And perhaps next year I will be able to get back to research.

Somos Primos preview of my book

Congratulations again Arturo....the piece was fascinating, albeit it took me
awhile to decipher it (I am more versed in English than Spanish)

You were right about the review of Guerrero - I certainly didn't know about
his indigenous/African background.

I will be going to a "Cultural Tour" in Monterrey within one week as a
representative of our school district in Illinois The Chicago Mexican American
Fine Arts Museum will be taking their exhibit to the Museum in Monterrey. They
will be featuring the African presence in Mexico. I am excited about
bringing back lessons and photos that will highlight the African presence in Mexico
- there is very little known about this within our Mexican history -- If I
can, I will share whatever was shared with me with this group.

Veronica & Rosalinda:

as I mentioned before, my Ureña beguins with Cornelia Cipriana Ureña b: 16 sept 1803 in Rancho de los Ureña, Zacolaco de Torres, Jalisco. She has siblings and descendants for her brothers to actual dates. But the line goes back to:

Cornelia Cipriana Ureña b:16 sept 1803 Rancho los Urena, Zacolaco de Torres, Jal.
Yrinea Dionicia de Jesus b: 5 apr 1799 Barranca de Enmedio, Zacoalco de Torres, Jal.
Santana Urena b: ?
Mariano Ureña b:?
Prentes: Jose Atanacio Laureano Ureña b:abt 1770 & Maria Narcisa Biscarra
Grandparents: Jose Juan Ureña b:abt 1740 & Maria Luisa Abila

All of them seem to be from the same place, Rancho los Ureña, Zacolaco de Torres.

If anyone has a match just let me know.

Thanks.

Llanos Y Valdez / Llanos Y Valdes information?

So after a long grace period away from this, I decided to run a search and see what comes up and I found 2 things of promise. Problem is, they are very vague mentions in the posts that came up.

Does anyone know much of the surname Llanos Y Valdez(also spelt Llanos Y Valdes) and its connection to the surname Rivas? If there is information on the family itself in terms of a history, thats what I'd prefer to know. It was mentioned they are "old families", so, I'm guessing there is a lot behind these.

Thanks Primos..

UREÑA FAMILY

I just wanted to mention that my great-grandmother was an Ureña. Her family lived in Totatiche, Jalisco, and her branch of the Ureñas started originally in Jerez, so I'm sure there is a connection. I have many Ureñas from that general are in my database. Email me and I'll see if there is a connection.

Latin translation needed

A friend of mine at the local FHC asked for my help in translating a document. It is from a country that uses the cyrillic [sp?] alphabet, but the printed part is also in Latin, as well as what the priest hand-wrote on the form.

Could someone translate the following:

Anno domini millesimo = year of our lord ?

Parenties et conditio = parents and ?

Patrini et conditio = godparents and ?

Ex parte officiii parochialis r. gr. cath = ?

notum testatumque fit, in libris, metricalibus hujus Ecdesiae tomus ____ pag. _____reperiri sequentia = ?

Quas testimoniales manu propia subscrib e et algillo [?] Ecclasiae parochialis corroboro = ?

In the "tomus ____ pag.___" above, it means book and page, but I can't figure out the rest.
In the last phrase above, the priest usually signs off saying that he signs his hand to the testimony, etc., but I don't remember the exact words.

Thanks,

Emilie

Apodaca´s charts

Steve Apodaca: Thanks for wrighting back. Answering your question.... no, I grew up in Guadalajara, but my mom was born and grew in Atotonilco El Bajo as well as my grandmother and all her family and ancestors. I visited 1000s of times the town and have lovely memories about it till now. I know the area very well, all the surroundings as Estipac, Villacorona, Cocula, Zacolaco, Sta Catarina and some others as Sayula, Las Barrancas, Acatlan, Ameca, etc. My mom and grandmother (still alive) told me many stories about these places and the way life was many years ago. I do have some stories written and it´s very interesting. About the Apodaca lines in my page, I don´t understand why they didn´t appear, I´m fixing that now. But anyway I remember y sent you the attachments with all this information and answered a previous mail. No matter what, I´ll send it again, ok? Actually I asked you for the information you have that I don't to complete all the family siblings..... Wait for your news. Wright back soon PS: Attached you´ll find the Apodaca files I have. Best regardsLIC. ALESSANDRO VITELA

Gracias

Familia Alteña-Franco de Paredes, Pérez y Franco, Pérez de Paredes

I came across a board on genealogy.com and other webpages from google that say these three families are somehow related but never mention exactly how. I do know that Pérez y Franco and Pérez de Paredes are related becuase the couple of Silão, Gto. in the 1600's had three sons two were given Pérez y Franco and the other Pérez de Paredes. Any Help? -Daniel MDC

signing off

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this great group, but it is time for me to move in another direction. I met great people on this site, and heard great stories, tales, etc. and enjoyed people talking about finding new "primos", etc. However, my search takes me back to a much later date than most of the ones on the site. I am actually envious of the many people that go back and forth to see and visit the land of their ancestors. Wish I could do that too, but mine left generations ago to Northern Mexico and then into South Texas, that everyone lost track of the people left behind.

So I thank the people that answered some questions for me, and good luck on your searching!

Respectfully,

Juanita

Research Digest, Vol 33, Issue 14- Jalpa, Zacatecas

Daniel Mendez del Camino

Daniel,

I will appreciate any more information you can post about Jalpa, Zacatecas. I have a relative born there (Juana Caro-Esquivel, b. 20 Nov 1912) for whom I have nothing else other than her parents names (F: Leonides Caro Fraire, M: Maria-Luisa Esquivel-Gonzalez). I believe they were from Las Paradas or La Parada, Zacatecas. Is there any local history you can post about Jalpa?

Elvira

Alessandro/Amerila , I didn't forget about you. Actually the records I have
from Jalpa are from 1884 to 1903. There are definitely Vitelas and Macias in
Jalpa. Wish I could be of more help.

Amelia if you say your grandmotehr died in 1960, then that is fairly recent
and you probably can get that from civil records in Jalpa. If you have any
friends or relatives in Jalpa, I suggest you ask them for that great favor.

Juan González de Hermosillo

Has anyone heard of this book "Venerable libro de la Cofradía de Santiago de Burgos", it contains all the ancestors of the González de Hermosillo at least in the male line back to the 1200's. I think we should track this book down. I think there is only one in the actual Caterdral de Burgos, worth traveling to Spain even just to look at it. The family is on section 18. Any comments or help!-Daniel MDC
