The batch numbers beginning with "I" are indexes. If the entry dissappears, from the IGI, you might want to try the Vital Records Index, and see if it is there.

Do any of you in El Paso know if Chief Perjuin Granillo of the Tiguas is still alive?
I am told he has another name, this might be his Hispanic name.
I am told he is the only living person who can verify my father's heritage.
Arturo,
About those batch numbers starting with "I":
Back in February, I printed out an entry in the IGI after searching for my grandfather's sister Angela Olague in Jerez and Tepetongo.
At the time, the IGI listed an Angela Olague born in Jerez around the time my great-aunt was born, but the parents listed for her were not the same as my grandfather's. I printed out the entry and filed it, thinking that when they got around to listing the film number, etc, I would send for it. The entry listed as Source Information only a batch number (I043209) and no Dates, or Source Call Number or Type or Sheet.
Elmilie,
It's there under IGI I043209 (the letter I not the number 1). When I used
only the surname of Olague, "no record," so I tried using only the first
name of Angela, and the record for Angela Olague came up. Pat

I just realized why the record didn't come up when I used only the surname.
I was using the letter "g," in Olague, when it's a "q"... Olaque. Pat
You are right, Pat. I just looked at the page I printed out in February and it is a "q" and not a "g". Thanks. Maybe now I will find other ancestors whose name was transcribed as Olaque with a "q". Emilie

Pat,
How did you do it? Did you just complete the search fields on the search page like I did and got nothing, or is there another way to do it?

This is what I did:
Access familysearch.org click on search -->click on IGI --->type in batch #,
region and last name only --> click on search.
When nothing came up, I then typed in the first name only, no surname, but
still used the batch # and region. That's how I found it.
Apparently "g' and "q" are being used when indexing the surname into the
LDS FHC files causing the spelling variation of that surname.
Pat
There is a web page that explains all of the IGI batch numbering and there is no "I" on that listing... strange. I remember reading somewhere (perhaps on Nuestros Ranchos) that batch numbers that begin with "I" are batch numbers that are still being entered...
http://www.rawlins.cnchost.com/igi.html
I wish I could be of more help, but I am not really sure what could have happened to your record. Did it list a place of baptism from where you could order a film?
The Batch numbers that begin with the letter "I", are indexes. I am not sure as to the status of these indexes. But usually, based upon the dates, you can figure out, what film goes, with those Batch Numbers.
Jonathan
Yes, it listed as the place of baptism "Inmaculada, Jerez De Garcia Salinas, Zacatecas". I have a film on permanent loan for that time period in Jerez, and there is no Angela Olague in that film.

Emilie,
You may want to send an e-mail or phone SLC FHC, ask them to verify the
film number for that batch. That way you can verify if it's the same film
that you have on permanent loan.

Below is an excerpt I took from the latest newsletter from Pat
Gooldy, who runs Ye Old Genealogy Shoppe. She is located in Indiana and
has few books on Mexico, but I love reading her newsletters because she always
has such good advice. In the excerpt below, she is talking about
researching her own and her husband's relatives in some of the Eastern
states. As we find in Mexico, she found that many people in
a community had the same names due to the habit of naming sons after fathers,
uncles, etc. Also, she found that men often married women with the same first
name, as we have found in Mexico. Do we really have the right Jose x,
married to our Maria x, of approximately the same ages, who were from our
locality and not another couple also from there or who moved there? Often after
tedious transcribing and comparisons, I find that I was following the wrong
thread.

In genealogy
contemporary sources arent yours. They are the sources of your ancestors
available contemporaneously to him.
This is where you
look for the pieces that tell you who he was not just that he
was. Therein lay the stories of these men
or women you call kin. Thank heavens for
the modern resources and the databases that bring an ever clearer picture to you
of your ancestors and therefore, of yourself.
However, a word of caution! Not every John Smith in the records of Maine
is YOUR John Smith. You are weaving a
tapestry of a mans life. Make sure all
your threads belong to the one that is your ancestor. Most towns, even back then, had more than one
man with the same name. I once helped a
lady research a county in Indiana that had four Percifield relatives,
all brothers, who lived at Four Corners, so
named because it was the place where the sections of land that the boys had
purchased met. Each one of the four boys
had at least four sons and all of them gave to the boys the names of himself and
his three brothers. Cant you imagine what
it was like when a lady stepped to the door of her cabin and yelled, Gilbert
Percifield, you get over to this cabin right now! Most of the time she got at least four, and
sometimes all five, of them at her doorstep in minutes. [Would be kind of nice, wouldnt it? Today you count the cars in the driveway
before you yell for anyone! And even then
you are lucky if anyone answers, never mind comes a-running!]
The Percifield marriages proved to be
daunting. Their county has had some
record destruction so the marriages are thought not to be complete. Even at that all the first generation married
and most of the second generation married.
There were plenty of Gilbert Percifield marriage records in the
courthouse records. The only trouble was
six of them married ladies named Elizabeth!
Think that was not a can of worms?
Straightening out that mess was a big job. But how could we trace the brides family if we
did not know which Elizabeth was ours? Turns out, we think he was one of the Gilbert
Percifields that had been married in another county before they moved
there. Finally found that record, but a
lingering doubt will always be there as to whether we really did get the right
Elizabeth!
Emilie, that is a great article. I ran into a very similar situation recently. As I mentioned to you, Esteban Valdes, the local historian in Totatiche is writing a book on the Pinedos and Ortegas in the Totatiche/Colotlan region. I was very excited when he told me because my mother's name is Pinedo and I thought I had traced her lineage back to the mid-1600s in Jerez to a certain Diego Pinedo and Josepha Gamboa.
Well, as it turns out there was a bad link in the chain. I had a Feliciano Pinedo Covarrubias whom I had down as a son of Manuel Pinedo and Gertrudis Covarrubias. He was born a couple of years before their marriage, but that didn't seem so strange. When I sent my Pinedo genealogy information to Esteban Valdes he immediately pointed out that I had the wrong parents for Feliciano. His parents were Manuel Pinedo and Gertrudis Covarrubias but a completely different set of people by the same name.
I didn't believe him until I started looking at films and lo and behold there were children born to Manuel and Gertrudis fifteen years before the marriage of the couple I had in my records. I looked up in the film the marriage date for the couple he claimed to be my ancestors and there they were... (almost) the exact same names but married twenty years earlier.
Luckily, the other Pinedos are ancestors of my father so all of that research was not lost. Now I am desperately trying to connect these two Pinedo lineages.

Arturo,
Yes, when I saw that article, I couldn't help but think, gosh, even the Americans have the same problems we do keeping everybody straight. I thought it was a Mexican problem. Thank goodness that people nowadays are allowed to be more creative in naming their kids. The idea now is to give each kid a unique name not used by other family members.
When I was researching my mother's maternal lines in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, I thought I had finally, after years of searching, found my Jose Provencio married to Jesus Medina, not very common names (ha!), only to compare my notes and land documents, etc. and found there were two couples with the same names of the same ages living at the same time in that county. The land records showed that they had different children and lived in different villages, so I finally found my couple, but I so easily could have "adopted" the wrong one. I have also had the same problem with my mother's paternal side. Her father was Jose Marquez, and his father had that name, and so did his grandpa, and his great-grandpa---I am not kidding---that name went back in that lineage for many, many generations. I was beginning to think it went back to ancient Rome--Josephus Marcus, ha, ha. They also named all their sons Jose Marquez. I finally after many years found that they had been given mi
ddle nam
es at baptism that they did not use, then I had to sort out the women and children in each generation who also carried the same names--ay Dios!
So, the lesson is--be cautious. What you see may not be what really was.
Emilie
Well, on that same theme I have attached a page from a dispensa that
ranchos member Sally Quinoñes found where two daughters are given the
same name! Without this document who would know?

You seem to know alot about the Pinedos in Zacatecas...so I'm hoping you can help me out. Perhaps the bext question to ask is what towns do you think were really hubs for Pinedos and Pinedas?
I'm asking because I've been stuck for a while and don't know how to proceed. I have found 2 marriage records for my great grandfather, named Nicanor Pineda, in Tlaltenango, dated 1903 and 1914. I also found the death certificate for his first wife in Tlaltenango. The problem is that I've been unable to find his baptism or birth records...I've been searching the Tlaltenango records for some time (for 1870s-1890s), but nothing. I'm wondering now if Nicanor Pineda might have been born and baptized someplace else.
What I do know is that his father's name is Pedro Pinedo according to the records I've found and, if my grandfather remembers right, Pedro Pinedo might have been in the cavalry. I believe that Nicanor's mother was named Pioquinta (Men/Car)dosa.
So any idea on other cities to start looking at? Any help is appreciated

Chris if you don't mind why not upload those two marriage records into
the "albums" area and send the group the link. We can leave them up for
a month or so and then take them down after those that are interested in
looking at them have done so. I for one would be interested in seeing
what they say. Did you send a record to the group awhile back?
You don't have to do this but it would be interesting to have a look see.

Ernie and Pat,
Here are 7 additional excerpts from Jose Luis' book, regarding Juana Delgadillos. I guess it shows you must be very cautious and vigilant when claiming ancestry to a certain individual's name because as we can see there appear to be several Juana Delgadillos.
Alicia,
You're so right about "claiming ancestry," we're at the mercy of historians
being accurate, as well as our own research being thorough. Accuracy is
sometimes over shadowed by the desire to link with the published
famous/nobles." It was once pointed out to me by a Portuguese
Historian/Genealogist, when I questioned the accuracy of a well known, well
referenced written publication. This is what he had to say..." "One must
keep in mind that in the 18th. century a new class of people emerged. The
new rich who tried by all means to prove the nobility of their ancestors.
That is why we must always take under suspicion the genealogical manuscripts
of that time." "Genealogia de Nochistlan," is based on the census of 1649
and 1664, but the tendency to linked with "published ancestry," is great,
and whether it be the 16th - 21st century. Plus for some, the added
attraction of being linked with nobles, tends to makes for great party
conversation."
Prima Pat.

I do not have the Vazquez y Frias publication, but I do have the
"capitulo,"listing. There's a reference to Capitulo 57 Descendencia de Diego de
Benavides y Juana Delgadillo. It may help to establish if this Juana
If I'm understanding this correctly, it's stating that the ancestry of Juana
Delgadillo is unknown, and it's said or maybe that Diego de Benavides is the
son of Diego de Benavides, native of Castilla (Spain). It is thought that
one of the sons, Luis de Benavides was known as a "mestizo." On 28 Jan
1679 in Mexticacan, died (I think it's referring to Juana, but I'm not sure)
of illnes, (vejez normal = looked ? normal) and of vomiting, Juana Delgado
of the age of more than 90 years, widow of Diego de Benavides. Of this
marriage ( I think it's referring to the number of years married...
something X5 ? not sure at all). Goes on to name the children, noting a
daughter, Juana Delgado who married Juan Rodriguez de Frias (same name as of
the author of this publication...), son of Juan Rodriguez de Frias y
Jertrudis de Amaya... Capitulo 15 y Luis de Benavides.
Please let me know if I'm on the right track with reading/translating this
document.

Pat,
You are mostly correct. Scroll down to the bottom to see the translation.
Please let me know if I'm on the right track with reading/translating this
document.
Pat
Capitulo 56, Se desconoce la ascendencia de Juana Delgadillo.
The Descendancy of Juana Delgadillo is unknown.
Parece ser que Diego de Benavides es hijo de Diego de Benavides el natural de los Reinos de Castilla.
It appears that Diego Benavides is the son of Diego Benavides, natural or native of the kingdom of Castilla.
Notese que uno de sus hijos, luis de Benavides se denomina mestizo.
It is noted that one of his sons, Luis de Benavides is listed as mestizo.
El 28 de Enero de 1679 en Mexticacan murio de enfermedad y vejez normal y de vomitos Juana Delgado
de hedad de mas de noventa años, viuda de Diego de Venabides.
On 28 of January of 1679 in Mexticacan, Juana died due to illness, normal aging and vomiting at more than 90 years of age.
De este matrimonio se han documentado los siguientes cinco vastagos. Phelipa Benavides, Maria Benavides,
Maria de Aceves, Juana Delgado quien caso con Juan Rodriguez de Frias, hijo de Juan Rodriguez de Frias y Jertrudis de Amaya, Capitulo 15. y Luis de Benavides.
From this marriage are documented the following five children. Phelipa Benavides, Maria Benavides,
Maria de Aceves, Juana Delgado who married Juan Rodriguez de Frias, son of Juan Rodriguez de Frias and Jertrudis de Amaya.
Hi Alicia,
I was just trying to place the index of the capitulos on Ranchos...
I'm wondering if my listing is correct... you noted Capitulo 56 for Juana's
reference. My listing has capitulo 56 as the descendencia de Nicolas de
Venavides y Ana de Santiago o Perez o Gonzalez...
For capitulo 57 I have Descendencia de Diego de Benavides y Juana
Delgadillo...
Please let me know if the book index is different than what I noted above...
Thank you,
Pat

Pat, my mistake, it is capitulo 57.
Thanks for pointing that out, it is my senioritis in addition to the +100 heat in 7 days and power outages everyday for at least 6 hours. Yesterday power was out for 14 hours, that means no air and no fans.
Me estoy quemando/I am burning up, not just physically but mentally.

No problem... I just didn't want to post this listing if it's incorrect.
Oh! my... we've been lucky, no power failures so far... it's going on a
couple of weeks now of over 100 to 107degree days/nights. Hope and pray
that the power stays on and that the air conditioner stays running. Not
even a cold shower helps in this kind of weather. You're so right, when
the elctricity goes out, not even a fan works... Hang in there dear prima!!
Hugs,
Pat

Esther:
Just out of curiosity, what information do you have about your Juan de Arredondo Aguero that lets you know that this is not him? It strikes me that a compound name like "Arredondo Aguero" is uncommon enough that two people who are not related to you migrating from Spain to Mexico with that name at the same time that you think your ancestors migrated would be a pretty unprobable coincidence.
Also, if you have more information, we can try redoing the search.
Arturo,
I know from documents in Cerralvo and Monterrey that Juan came in the 1630s from the Montains
of Burgos with his son Mateo and his cousin Hernando Arredondo Aguero. They were part of the company of the new governor of Nuevo Leon Martin Zavala, son of General Agustin Zavala of Zacatecas and an Ana Sepeulveda, also my ancestor. Martin, though iligitimate, was educated abroad in Spain. Martin was the only child of Agustin Zavala and inherited everything. He came to Nuevo Leon with his mother, step father and several half brothers and a half sister.
Juan upon entering Nuevo Leon married a daughter of Ana Sosa , daughter of Alonso Albernoz de Sosa
and Beatriz Rodriguez Navarro. Hernando married another daughter of Ana Sosa. Ana was married to ALonso Farias. Alonso Albernoz de Sosa was bushwhacked in New Mexico( San Juan) about 1600
by Vicente Saldivar, nephew of Juan Onate. Alonso wanted to to return to Zacatecas because New Mexico was not turning out to be the venture he had hoped. Onate did not like people dissenting.
He made an example of Alonso. The widow Beatriz Rodriguez Navarro, grand daughter of the conquistador Juan Navarro then married Bernabe de las Casas, a relative of th archbisop Bartolome de las Casas. When they got a chance when Onate and a lot of the military were out foraging for food they took their families and returned to Zacatecas. Juan Onate and Vicente Zaldivar were brought back for trial.
Another of Ana's daughter's married a Vicente Zaldivar, not the Vicente Zaldivar above, but a relative and descendant of the Zaldivars and the Onates.
I descend from Beatriz through both her marriages about 8 times, through the Arredondos, Farias, Villarreals, Zaldivars, and the Lobo Guerreros.

Esther:
This is likely the same Juan de Arredondo... It may be that Damasio was an alternate name for Hernando... Arredondo and Ruesga are basically the same place. Arredondo is a town in the Valley of Ruesga in what is now Cantabria. However, the valley is in the mountains between Burgos and Cantabria and it may be that it those days, the town and valley were part of what was considered Burgos and thus would be in the "montanas de Burgos."
Many people who came over came with licensias sponsored y rich people already in the new world and thus the "como criado" wording in the license. It is probable that he came in 1626, would have worked in one of the major cities (perhaps for his sponsor) and then headed out to the frontier in the north for more opportunity.
I will try to get you the license document.
Esther:
I think we have your Juan de Arredondo. Not the one that I originally thought but another one that was on the original list. Once you told me who Martin Zavala was it was easy enough to track down the licencia for him and the numerous servants that he sponsored to bring over. On that same date appears a Juan de Arredondo headed for Nueva Espana.
In the licensia for Juan de Arredondo, one of the witnesses is Fernando de Arrendondo, su sobrino... it is kind of hard to read and perhaps the licensia is for the both of them and it was extracted incorrectly but I am pretty certain these are your Juan and Hernando de Arredondo.

Sorry, Joseph. I realized after I sent my message that I should have replied to the research group rather than the general list. Please feel free to move my long message on Diego Delgadillo to the other list if it's possible.
Actually, I am not a descendant of Diego Delgadillo although I wish I were. ;-)
However, I have included auxiliary lines in my database as they connect through marriage, and it appears that almost everybody in Nochistlan is connected through marriage.
Deena,
I wish you were too! You obviously have a lot to contribute.
Like you, I try to be careful in my work and always reference my sources. However, we are all human and can make mistakes.
I included Juana as the child of Diego Delgadillo and Petrona de Yslas. My source for her is Batch #8676301. Although, it's patron submitted her estimated year of birth (1662) fits, so I included her. Juana's husband is Lorenzo Alvarez Tostado according to this batch. It could be a mistake or she could've been baptized in another parrish which would explain why her christening record is not found in Batch #K600711.
Thanks for your comments. If you would like to be included in the Diego Delgadillo focus group, I would be happy to add you to the list.
Maria
I do not have the Vazquez y Frias publication, but I do have the "capitulo,"
listing. There's a reference to Capitulo 57 Descendencia de Diego de
Benavides y Juana Delgadillo. It may help to establish if this Juana
Delgadillo was the daughter of Diego and Petronilla. Reference to
individuals with the Delgadillo surname can be found in the following
"capitulos."
Capitulo: 6, 13, 16, 34, 50, 51, 54, 57, 84 and 86.

okay so it's been awhile since we transitioned and started on the new
site, but the rules are the rules. I'm starting a long range call for
genealogies (Do you remember when you and I made that agreement for you

Hi Maria,
I'm interested in knowing about those of us who descend from the Diego Delgadillo-Petrona Islas line. You can add Yolie Wilkerson to this line as well, our great-grandfathers were brothers, sons of Salvador de Xauregui & Maria Catarina Vidaurre. She and I communicated on and off for a few years, (prior to Ranchos), and were finally able to make the connection about 4 years ago.
I've added an attachment showing my line.

I have 3 lines of Villarreals and 25 lines of Trevinos.

Leticia,
I too have a Rafael Felix that was from the Tepetongo area. He was the brother of my ggg-grandfather Felipe Felix. Rafael was married to Gregoria Salazar who was also an ancestor of mine. Rafael's father Marcelino (married to Juana de Acevedo) used the surname Felix de Tinajero, and some descendants used the Felix or the Tinajero or both or they would alternate between the two every time they had a child baptized. Sometimes they would use their mothers' surnames which has made finding them a challenge. I see in the IGI that a member of the LDS church submitted a record for a Rafael Felix born "about 1766" in Salitrillo, Zacatecas.

My husbands family is from El Salitrillo, At this moment I am in the process

I share a branch somewhere along the way, (although we met in Los Angeles) I
will be asking for help downloading it to GEDCOM.
Letty
Emily I was not aware of the Tinajero-Felix connection thanks, I am in the
process of uploading my tree.
Hello everyone,
Does anyone happen to know a Matias Amaro? This person and I have A LOT of
history that we share. I would LOVE to communicate.I believe we share
history on BOTH side of my family.

Hope
Arturo,
Can you look up Hernando Arredondo Aguero or Juan Arredondo Aguero or Martin Zavala in the passenger lists for about 1630's?
Thank you!

There is someone that appears to be some probable matches to your ARREDONDO AGUERO clan... perhaps a son of the Juan de Arredondo you are looking for. Arredondo is a town in spain and there are many entries for names like "Concha de Arredondo".

My name is Ruth Olivar Millan. My name was changed by my parents J.Luciano Olivar and Maria de Jesus Ramirez to "Ruth" after confusion developed in elementary school regarding all The Jose' and Maria's with the Olivar surname. I was born in the San Joaquin Valley Cal. My dad was born in Nebraska and most of my uncles and aunts were born in the Mid west. They were deported from the USA in the 30's to Mexico...Laos Altos where my father met my mother "Chuy la Huera' (from el Rancho de Santa Ysabel, Jalisco). there was an all call during WWII and my dad returned to the US.
Ruth/Cuca,
My mother-in-law Maria Refugio Perez, born 1903 in Nochistlan, came to the
USA in 1911. She was also known by the name of Ruth, as well as Cuca by
family members. Is there a connection or story why a person named Ruth,
is also called Cuca? What does Cuca mean?
Pat Silva Corbera
Cuca is the standard nickname for Refugio... Cuco would be a male Refugio and Cuca is a female refugio. It has a completely different meaning in Colombia but I digress...
So anyhow, Refugio translates as Ruth thus Ruths are Cucas by double translation. I have an aunt, a (now deceased) grandmother and a niece all named Refugio or Ruth and we call them all Cuca... so there is the abuelita Cuca, the tia Cuca and "Cookie"
Arturo,
Thank you so much for this explanation. When I asked Tino about it he said,
"that's what they always called her." When I share what you have written,
he will be very surprised.
Oh! And yes we also have a "Cookie." One of Tino's nieces another Ruth is
known as "Cookie."
Pat Silva Corbera
Hi Pat, translations of names from one language to another is always interesting. My American born father was named Aniceto but in English it translates to Chet, his brother was named Bonefacio but since he was tall and lanky people thought Bony was for his look so he had it legally changed to Peter! My uncle was born in Tamazula but came to this country when he was 2 years old, his legal name was Maria Guadalupe but everyone called him Lupe then he had it legally changes to Luis.. I got confused when I tried to find his baptism record thinking Maria Guadalupe was girl I had never heard of.. My gr-grandparents were always called Mama grande and Papa grande.

I have always wondered whether there are English translations for the following names:
Diego
Santiago
and of course, the translations of Nahuatl names are interesting:
Xochitl = Flor = Flower
Citlatli = Estela = Stella = Star
Yoltzin = Corazonsito = Small Heart
Cuauhtemoc = Aguila Descendiente = Descending Eagle
Tenoch = Tuna de Piedra = Cactus Pear of Stone?
I don't know about Diego but the Santiagos in my family have all been called "Jimmy." Another one that interested me was "Chuy." My grandfather was named Jesus and people referred to him as Chuy. Didn't think much of it until I met my doctor's husband, also named Jesus, but she called him Chuy.

I've always thought Diego was Spanish for James, and
Santiago is St. James (like in the Bible: Saint
James=San Diego which turned into Santiago). I could
be wrong, but that's what I've thought all these
years...

Both Diego and Santiago translate in English into James. Diego derives from
San Diego -- Saint James -- and Santiago is a contraction of the two words.
Santiago is also the famous battle cry used by the Spaniards in their wars
beginning with the reconquest of Spain from the Moors. In one famous
battle, the image of Saint James allegedly appeared in the sky and raised
the morale of the Spaniards to where they won.

Jose, Arturo,
Yes, Diego translates into James. However, " San Tiago" translates into Saint James. Tiago is translated into James.
"San", as we all know, stands for Saint, as in San Diego, San Jose, or San Tiago, etc.
I'm not at all certain, but Tiago may be Portugese. In France it is Saint Jacques, in Italy it's Saint Giacomo.

This has been a wonderful learning experience for me. We also have a
Guadalupe and she's known as Lupe. A paternal grandmother was named
Trinidad, and I kept finding records for Trinidad, but they were all males..
Our grandchildren call Tino "little grandpa," because he drives a much
smaller truck than their paternal grandpa, who is known as "big grandpa."
Another ancestor Maria Hilaria, upon coming to the US was known as Andrea,
a shortened version of her last name of Andrada/e.
Pat
Pat,
Although this was not addressed to me I will dare to reply. My maternal grandmother's name was Maria del Refugio Ruiz, Esparza and everybody called her Cuca. My great aunt, was also named Maria del Refugio. She was my maternal grandfather's sister and she was also called "Cuca" so the answer to your question is all or most Refugios are called "Cuca" which is the shortened term of endearment for Refugio. The male Refugios are called "Cuco" instead of "Cuca" and as we know they are usually Jose del Refugio as in my maternal Great grandfather. Jose del Refugio Ruiz, Muñoz and my mom and uncles referred to him as " Papa Cuco".

Dear Alicia,
I'm still looking for that ancestor that will link Tino's family and yours!
I'm so grateful for all your help, so please, "jump in," as you have, even
though I may not address my questions to a specific individual, it's the
group participation that counts!
Thank you so much for adding to the explanation of why Tino's mom Refugio
was called Ruth as well as Cuca.
;-)
Pat
Alicia,
I too dare to reply (or put in my dos centavos) re nicknames: Could it be that nicknames resulted from a child's inability to pronounce their names? For example, a child usually only picks up on a couple of syllables of a name, it seems. The Queen of England is nicknamed Lilibet (what she would say her name was when she was a child--for Elizabeth), and I was---and still am referred to by older relatives as-- Mili (pronounced mee-lee) since I used to answer that when asked what my name was (Emilia). So I figure that a child would say "cuco" for Refugio, no?

I have always found it curious where some nicknames come from. I understand nicknames when they are a shorter version of the original name or as Emilie says, a childs version of name (but those names are not standard). The standard nicknames seem to not even be related to the orignal name like:
Refugio = Cuca
Jose = Pepe
Juan = Paco
Francisco = Pancho
Jesus = Chuy
Today, I think many people with hispanic names are either translating there name, ie
Carlos = Charles
Diego = James
Esperanza = Hope
Or they just pick the closest name to their original name:
Hilario = Larry
Jesus = Jesse
Which by the way, Jesus translates to Joshua. And I don't think Refugio translates to Ruth. Sounds more like they just picked the closest 'R' name.
Just my two centavos,
Angie Godina
Angie:
I beg to differ that they just picked the closest "R" name. In English Ruth means
1. Compassion or pity for another.
2. Sorrow or misery about one's own misdeeds or flaws.
Refugio, while not an exact translation of that concept is pretty close and thus considered a translation of that name.
As far as Jesus and Joshua, you are correct. They are both derivatives from the Hebrew Yehoshua (the name of Moses' successor as leader). One is derivative through the Greek transliteration Iasous, while the other is more directly adapted from the Hebrew.
Some other nicknames:
Rosario = Chayo
Enrique = Quico
Eduardo = Lalo
One question, how does Diego become James? I thought James translated as Jaime.
>One question, how does Diego become James? I thought James translated as Jaime
According to my source here are the different translations of James:

James, which is a variation of Jacob, means "he who supplants".
James in Spanish is Santiago, as in the "Epístola de Santiago" (James

Santiago has an alternate form as Diego.
Jaime is also a translation of James.
The nickname for a Santiago is Chago.
Other nicknames:

Nicolas
This boy's name is used in French and Spanish. It corresponds to the English name Nicholas.
Nicholas
This boy's name is used in English and Romanian. Its source is Nikolaos, a Greek name meaning "Victorious people."
Nicanor
This boy's name is used in Spanish. Its source is nike aner, a Greek phrase meaning "Victorious man."
Nike
This girl's name is used in Greek. Its source is a Greek expression meaning "Victory." Also, Nike was the name of the ancient Greek goddess of victory.
Apparently the two names have the same root of Nike.

Angie,
Wouldn't the original names in the original languages have been pronounced differently? For example, Jose might have been originally Josep like in Latin (or in Italian Giuseppe) for Jose? The "j" in Jesus might have been pronounced like the "j" in "just" which sounds more like the "ch" sound in Chuy. Pancho sounds like the Franco I have heard in other languages. Refugio may have had a hard g in there making it sound like "cuco" to a child who could not pronounce all the syllables.
My husband just gave me more nicknames: Chava (Salvador), Chago (Santiago), Yoya (Gloria). His name is Antonio, but we have always called him Tony, of course a short version of his name. His brother is Henry (Enrique) and that may have come from the French Henri.

I am finishing up a manuscript on the historic ethnography of southern Zacatecas and Northern Jalisco coupled with my father's genealogy. It is written in Spanish and I am looking to self-publish the work so I need someone to do line/stylistic editing. If you or anyone you know might be interested in this work, please let me know. I am willing to pay, though I do not have much of a budget...

Has anyone plotted out the various Maria Lopez de Elizaldes?
There must be a dozen of them. It is the single most confusing name in my family tree. Its hard to tell if a second marriage is for the same Maria Lopez de Elizalde, or for her daughter, niece, granddaughter...
Nathan,
I am trying to follow the line of this family and am confused. I can't distinguish the path between parents, marriages and children.
Is Diego Romo de Vivar and Maria Rangel the parent's of Jeronimo Romo de Vivar who was born about 1648? Also is Jeronimo Romo de Vivar the father of Jose Pedro Romo de Vivar y Rangel born about 1634 and married 5 May 1658? Is Juan Romo de Vivar (married to Maria de Tiscareño) the son of Jose-Pedro Romo de Vivar? Are Antonio (1664), Domingo 1666, Juan 1675, the sons of Juan Romo de Vivar and Maria Tiscareño? I am trying to make sure I have connected the dots correctly.
This looks like a wealth of information and thanks for sharing it with everyone. Genealogy is very time consuming and I am always happy when everyone shares!
Thanks Again,
Maria Elena Gutierrez-Uhlenburg

Hola to all my Rancho's Primos
I am trying to get as much information about publishing one line of my family,
The SAAVEDRA/BALTAZAR line of Durango, Chihuahua & Texas. My question to the group is where do I start, what should I include. Any tips from our group would be welcomed! Sources, examples, sites or any personal experiences -seran bien recibidas. I read in a book that "Ir's not history until it's written" so I do want to write and print & share my work with my familia.
well others will give the meaty part of what to include, but what an
honor it would be to have an oral history story printed in the book from
4 or 5 of your currently living relatives. What an honor it would be for
them to know that their words will be included in the words that many
future geneations will read.
just like we think its special just to find names of our ggggg relatives
how much more special would it be in xxxxxxxx generations from now to
find some of their stories of what it was like xxx generations back.

Yolanda, I am in the midst of doing the same thing. I imagine it will be an ongoing project with other editions that will have to be published in the future...
I am using lulu to do the publishing.
I got a lot of good tips from here:
http://genealogy.about.com/od/writing_family_history/a/write.htm
I am using a graphing software for diagrams called Genopro. I can send you some samples if you like.
I have also just bought the PAF companion software which does some nifty color graphs... though color is not very useful when printing a black and white book.
Arturo & Joseph
The site "About genealogy" has some good suggestions. I especially want to include a scrapbook/album and memoir/narrative in the book. Joseph's idea of including some family stories is a wonderful idea. My mother is 76 and has the best stories about our family. As a matter of fact I recorded her as we looked at a book about Smeltertown here in El Paso. Her memory and gift of detail is incredible. So this will be one of the stories to include in my book. GREAT idea Joseph
Keep them coming GRACIAS

Yolanda,
I am interested in that book you mention about Smeltertown. What is the title, author, publisher, etc.?

Emile,
This book is written by a local historian Fred Morales. He does all the research, writing, printing and publishing. He even delivers the book to your home here in town. The book costs about $30 and is a spiral bound. It also includes a variety of topics ASARCO, ANAPRA, SUNLAND PARK, MT. CRISTO REY, EL PASO BRICK, SP & EP & SW RAILROADS AND OTHERS. He also has books on Segundo Barrio, History of Downtown El Paso, History of Cordova Island, History of the Mexican Revolution vol 1 & 2 and Mexican Revolution Trail of El Paso and Juarez. He also runs the El Paso/Jjuarez Historical Museum at 6400 Airport Rd. El Paso, Tx. 79925 You can contact him at (915) 771-6727 Fred,s books always have wonderful pictures, many that have not been seen before. Leon Mets another local author calls him the best local historian. He loves to give presentations at local libraries on a variety of topics and he sets up displays aswell. He is a GEM!
Joseph you might think about contacting him about a podcast.
All for now, hope this helps

Just a heads up, the film jumps back and forth between dates as it appears to
be the remnants of several books... however, within each remnant, the
marriages are in order. I am about a third of the way through and have gone

Looking for Leonarda Lujan born in 1800's in Sain del Alto Zacatecas. Any Lujans out there in rancho land? She only had one son which was my grandfather Jose. She died when he was a young man and he took care of her. My grandfather said she died of an illness called "flores blancas". Sometimes I wonder what it was like being a single unwed mother in the 1800's Mexico. What I find intriguing is how Jose was accepted by the Martinez Family. His Father Eduardo Martinez was married and his wife and kids treated my grandfather very well. My grandfather Jose Lujan married as a young man dont know his first wife's name she died giving birth and so did the child. Later he married my grandmother Maria Mendoza Castaneda. My grandmother Maria rememberd attending his wedding to his first wife when she was a young girl. She said she and her friends giggled as the young couple kissed. Leonarda Lujan had other sisters I would like to know who they were. If anyone has any info or where I
Lupe:
I think the best place to start is to try to find your grandfather's baptism certificate. It should list his grandparents and once you have that information you will know who Leonarda's parents were. With that information you will not only be one generation further back in your genealogy but you should be able to find any other children that they had and therefore find your great-grandmother's siblings.
Do you know your grandfather's date and place of birth? He was likely baptised within a couple weeks of his birth most likely in the closest parrish.
