Puerto/Puesto/Puerta

Deena,

I also have had a question about Puerto vs. Puesto vs. Puerta.

On my husband's gggg-grandmother's (Maria Maxima Duron Reyes) birth record (can be viewed only in IGI-submitted by a member after 1991) her birth place is listed as Puerto del Marquez, Aguascalientes, 1792. I was able to obtain a copy of her original marriage record for 1814 on a microfilm for Rincon de Romos--"en la capilla del Rincon") and it says "originaria y vecina de la jurisdiction de Aguascalientes en el puesto del Maguei". She was 22 years old, putting her birth year at 1792. The groom (Patricio Martin) was living in the Hacienda de Pavellon, age 19.

Hi Emilie,

I suspect that the information found in the IGI database was
misinterpreted by the person submitting the record. Sometimes the word
"puesto" is hard to read, but now that I know what I'm looking for, I can
usually make it out.

As far as I can tell the word puesto was not part of the name of the
place. It was like saying, "I'm from the city or town or village of
(wherever)." So these individuals indicated to the curate or whoever wrote
the entry that they were from the puesto of (wherever).

In the example of Puerta del Llano in Aguascalientes, which you
found on an up-to-date map, it appears that Puerta is part of the actual
name of the place.

yes it is amazing some of my early interpretations of handwriting are
wonders to behold. Now that I know what I'm looking for I am amazed at
some of the things I came up with.

nothing like spending a lot of time in front of a microfilm reader and
rolling through film.

Also the family tree I submitted under the name Enriqueta is updated. Please put that familytree with the "Henrietta Rosales" file. Help with Arroyo Hondo

The word that sometimes looks like "puerto," when identifying the place
where the person in question lived, is "puesto." While it can literally
mean "place" or "position," it also translates to a "post" or "station,"

Help!

I have been doing research on my fathers family (Asebes) since June 03. Now I have run into a brickwall with Ricardo de Asebes and his wife Ana Maria de Hortis. They are my 4th great grandparents. I cannot find any information about them in the Familysearch program. I have copies of their son, Dionicio/Leonicio (my 3rd great grandfather) and their daughter Maria Quirina, marriages, where it states that they were married (each 2 times) in Nochistlan, Zac. His marriages were in 1799 and 1804, and hers in 1803 and 1820. It also says that he was "originario del Puerto del Arroyo Hondo". We cannot read where she was from. My husband is from Tonala, Jal. and helps me translate. On those records are the names of Ana and Ricardo only, no grandparents. Also I cannot find any birth/baptismal records for Dionicio or Quirina. I would appreaciate any help.

Rickie,

Have you requested the Informacion Matrimonial for the year or years in which they may have been married? These are great sources of information when you can't find who the parents were of the bride and groom on a marriage record.

For that time period between the late 1700's early 1800's, there is an Arroyo Hondo within the municipality of Nochistlan which is presently between Jalpa Zac and Calvillo Aguascalientes, close to Tepezala ouside of Jalpa. I believe that into the 1900's it is no longer part of Nochistlan but I could be wrong. I have many of my Jauregui's that were from Arroyo Hondo.

Where it appears to say Puerto de Arroyo Hondo it may be punto de Arroyo Hondo. I too have been confused at times with what looks to be Puerto. I go through other records in that same film to see how it's written and I have found it to be punto not puerto(port). I have multiple magnifying lenses that I use once I've copied the record. I then take the record and print the section that is in question at least 25% larger, or more if necessary to make out the specific lettering. Always compare the letters to adjacent records on that roll of film so you can become familiar with the handwriting in question. Remember, the scribes or priests usually were not from that town, they would arrive green into new towns and impose their own interpretations on names of towns, ranchos, haciendas etc.

I hope this helps,

Alice - Thank you for your prompt answer. I have only searched on-line. I will order the films this week. We saw that it says "Punto de Arroyo Hondo" on Ma.Quirinas' marriage records, but we thought the word was "puerto". We check-out the films the same way you do. About the different spellling of last names - I have found at least 7 different Asebes spellings.

Thanks again Arturo.

I was able to confirm that San Agustin church in Laredo does have my grandfather's baptism certificate, but I don't think it has the grandparents listed. At least according to the person I spoke to on the phone who was looking at it when she talked to me. I requested a copy of the certificate, so I can see for myself in a week or so.

I did learn one other piece of information from my grandfather, Jesus Maria Pineda. He remembers hearing that his father Nicanor had a half-brother, named Jesus Maria, for whom he was named. If my grandfather remembers correctly, he lived in Torreon where he worked for the government. I don't know if this Jesus Maria shared the same mother (Pioquinta) or father (Pedro Pineda/o) as Nicanor, although my grandfather thinks they shared the same father.

On the Villarreal side, from my most direct Villarreal ancestor I don´t have much information, haven´t been able to find it yet. This is what I have:

Nicolás Villarreal married on August 24, 1811 in Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Salinas Victoria, Salinas Victoria, Nuevo León, México to Petra Cantú. They had:
María de Jesús Leocadia Villarreal Cantú (1813)
María Leocadia Villarreal Cantú (1814)
María Rosalía Villarreal Cantú (1817)
María Dominga Villarreal Cantú (1819)
Juan de Diós Villarreal Cantú (1821)
José Emiliano Villarreal Cantú (1823)
María Andrea Villarreal Cantú (1835)

All of them were christened in Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Salinas Victoria, Salinas Victoria, Nuevo León, México

I just have info about José Emiliano Villarreal Cantú, he married (I don´t know where) María Gela Villarreal or María Angela Villarreal and they are the parents of my great grandfather Antonio L. Villarreal Villarreal who was born in 1857 and married in 1893 María Francisca Domitila Zertuche Barrera (1863).

José Emiliano and María Gela or Maria Angela had another child, Albina Villarreal Villarreal in 1862 who married in 1880 Hilario Vilarreal González, son of José María Villarreal y Gutiérrez and María Sóstenes González. I don´t know if they had children.

My great-grandparents Antonio and María Francisca Domitila had just 3 children. A girl named Guillermina Julieta died at just two months of birth. Then comes my grandfather Humberto José (1904-1985) who married my granda Guadalupe de la Fuente Rodriguez daughter of David de la Fuente Barrera and Ecliceria Rodriguez Cantú. My grandparents had 3 children, one aunt unmarried, my uncle Humberto married, he has 5 children, 2 of them married and there are 3 grandchildren, and my mom Silvia Guillermina, married to a very distant cousin José Ramos Suarez Rotter, descendant of Diego Temiño de Velasco, whom is the same ancestor of my mother. It´s my sister, married and has two sons and at last its me, single.

My grandfather had only one sister besides the one who died as a baby. She was my aunt Ampara Villarreal Zertuche (1907-1996), she married, had 2 daughters still alive, six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. As you see my direct Villarreal family is small, although there are many Villarreales out there I haven´t been able to link Nicolás Villarreal to anyone else.

Keep in touch.

okay here is how to do it. First go to the oldest individual. then go
"View" and then to "Genealogy Report" then go to "Contents" and "Number
of geneations to show" and pick a number that does not show any living
relatives. Probably around your grandparents. After the report is
exactly like you want it then go to "File" and down to "Export Genealogy

that oldest relative and the date.

discrepancy in marriage dates

I went through some films looking for the marriage dates of my husband's grandparents in Mascota, Jalisco, and came across two different dates. The first date was in April 1900 and the other in January of 1901. I don't know if they had to go to the church first and do something before marrying, or if they came back months later to sign something or what. I looked at another couple who got married the same month. The first date was at the beginning of Paril and the other was a few days later. I don't know if anyone may know why the dates don't match? Is there any way to knkow which is the correct date? Thanks!

Lavaniya,

Are you looking at marriage films or is it Informacion Matrimonial, there is a difference.
Informacion matrimonial does the marriage investigation of the bride and the groom. The parents submit the request for their children's marriage to the church. Along with this request 3 or 4 witnesses for each come forth to say they know either the bride or the groom. Once the investigation is complete, it could be a few months or it could take up to a year, they post the marriage date. Sometimes it's in the same film and other times in different films for different years, depending on the location or municipality. If there were many marriage petitions that year it will split into several years' films, fewer marriage petitions, chances are you would find all the marriage info within the one roll of film from the date they petitioned to be married until the day they are actually married.

Marriage films only show the date they married, not the investigation.

I have seen this double marriage date phenomenon as well especially in earlier (17th Century) marriage films. I know that sometimes it is a seperate casamiento and velacion. I am not certain what the velacion part is. It seems that the act of marriage, for whatever reason was seperated into two ceremonies...

Anybody have more information about this?

On page 199 of George Ryskamp's book, "Finding your Hispanic Roots" he says:

"Another important and commonly found phrase is case y vele
(married and blessed) or case, despose, y vele, (married, wed, and
blessed), indicating the two different marriage actions that took place
within the Catholic Church. One was the actual marriage ceremony (case
or case y despose). This could take place at any time and was performed
by a priest. The second, velar, was a special blessing given by the
priest upon the marriage. There were two periods during the year when
such velaciones (blessings) could not be given: the forty days prior to
Christmas, known as adviento (Advent), and the forty days prior to
Easter, known as cuaresma (Lent). Records of marriages that took place
during one of those two periods frequently have a note in the margin
indicating that the velaciones were done on a separate date from the
marriage ceremony. In such a case, the newly married couple returned to
the church at the end of the the forty-day period for the special
blessings, and the priest then noted in the margin that the blessings
had been given.
Sometimes these velaciones were not recorded in the margins but
rather in natural order within the marriage book or in a separate book
called El Libro de Velados, which listed all o f the velaciones---those
that were done concurrently with the marriage and those that were done
afterward. The recording of velaciones and marriages in the same book
can be confusing. A velacion may be found in the marriage book several
pages after the record of the marriage. Both entries may be nearly
identical, except the record of the actual ceremony will say 'case.'
When this happens you should be careful to record the correct marriage
date (the earlier of the two). In other cases the marriage might have
taken place in the bride's parish, but the velacion was performed and
recorded in the parish of the groom"

thank you very much for asking this question as I just learned the
difference myself. I've seen those marriage records that looked
identical to the previous and couldn't figure out why there were two
records of the same thing but separated by some time. . .now I know. .
.thanks,

joseph

The marriage ritual within the Catholic church was divided into two parts a long time ago. Over the centuries the ceremony has varied from one culture group to another. The "velacion" is a separate part of the ceremony. It is supposed to be carried out separately from the nuptial mass. At different times is was held on separate days or months or longer. Below is a definition of "velacion" which I saw in my ancient copy of the Academica Real's dictionary (1956).

"Ceremonia instituida por la Iglesia católica para dar solemnidad al matrimonio, y que consiste en cubrir con un velo a los cónyuges
en la misa nupcial que se celebra, por lo común, inmediatamente después del casamiento."

Laredo research update

The parish is probably San Agustin. Call your local Archdiocese. The person in charge of the ARchives should have a listing of current parishes for Laredo. THe archivist should be able to help you get a copy of the baptism. THe 1930's may not be in the LDS microfilms.

Anyone from San Antonio, TX?

Good morning:
Anyone here originally, formerly, or presently from San Antonio, TX? I am currently reading a (library) book, "HIDDEN KITCHENS", by Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson, based on their NPR series 'Hidden Kitchens'. Story #3 (chapter 3) is "The Chili Queens of San Antonio". A very interesting insight into the chili stands that used to be found at various plazas, and existed for about 100 years (until the health department stepped in in the early 1930's). In addition to the historical background, there are a couple of recipes, and an essay on Lydia Mendoza, "La Alondra de la Frontera" and an essay on West Commerce Mercado. I know this isn't within the realm of Ranchos genealogy, but thought it was an interesting presentation of past history.

I thought this was an interesting post with historical content on a
section of the country that some of our ancestors settled in. No need
to apologize in my opinion. Marge V:)

Aguascalientes Ancestry Info Found for Esparza/Gamez Family

Hi,
I am new to this forum. I am doing my husband's geneology. His descendants are from Aguascalientes, Mexico. I am new at this Family Geneology searching but I think I made some real strides last night. I went to Familysearch.org looking for my husband Hector's grandmother on his father's side. I noticed that Mexico was one of the choices for location so I gave it a try. Boy, I hit the jackpot. I found his father's birth info, grandparents, great grandparents, and I think even great, greats! Here is a summary of what I found:

You're going to have to find your local Family History center and order
some films. All those records you found should have had a film number
associated with them so that is where you will start. Even though you
found this information online you'll still need to verify it on the film
and give your references as to exactly where you found it. Once you look
at the marriage record you might find where your Luis was from so you
can look for records in that area.

go to www.familysearch.org and find you closest FHC with the best hours
for you to do research. Go there pay them a visit and order a couple of
films.

if you find the location of your Luis start calling the Esparza's in
that location to see if you find someone that remembers him.

Esteban Villa and the RCAF

Hello Hope,

I am familiar with Esteban Villa's work and most of the RCAF artists. Back
in the late 70's I used to drop in their shop at the old Holy Angels
Elementary school. My cousin, Louie Gonzalez, is one of the original

So nice of you to contact me, thank you!! I feel a little left out because
so many in the group have family connections in one way or
another.................but I am determined my day will come!! I enjoy
seeing what everyone has to say and just wanted to share a little of me. No,
I do not live in Ca. I live in Tennessee. My mother who is Esteban's sister
also lives here so I don't think I will ever relocate, but I do wish I had
someone to 'work' with here in the south.I have found some history info but
I don't know alot about computers so I just have it on paper for now.
Thanks again,
Hope
