Same names

Esther ... ,

> Rafael Lopez Ornelas ... oldest male in a family of 13. His
> youngest brother was also named Rafael Lopez Ornelas

I have a surprising number of such instances in my database. And I
would say that in browsing the christening record images I have seen
MANY like this. It causes a lot of problems before you discover that
two siblings had the same name.

There are several scenarios I have seen.

A child is given the same name as an older sibling for no apparent
reason.
A child born on the birthday of an older sibling was often given the
same name.
A child born in the same month as an older sibling. Saints days
weren't followed precisely - it seems that families often chose between
favorite saints whose days were close to the birthdate of the child.

Twins were often given the same name.

I have seen records that don't even name each child distinctly - for
example, the record just says "Bacilios", meaning two of them, and
"hijos legitimos" (plural) and in the margin the word gemelos (twins).
To my way of thinking I would somehow feel cheated if the recorder
didn't make a separate record for my birth .

One particularly confusing instance was of a child born exactly 10
years to the day after his older brother, and was given the same name.
Until I discovered the christening records for both of them I thought
it was a typo or copying error.

In still another family I discovered 3 siblings named Francisca. Two
of them were twins, and the other was born exactly 6 years earlier to
the day.

Contrary to what I've often heard, there was no requirement that the
older sibling died young, although that sometimes happened. In the
case of Francisca, the older one and one of the twins both married and
raised families. The other twin died at age 13.

The confusion that often results from same-name siblings can be hard
to reconcile. You sort of get your first clue when the marriages and
parents of the children don't reconcile. You think there are two
spouses, but they overlap, then you dig deeper and discover the
same-named siblings.

Someone's lost history..

So yesterday I went out and bought a bunch of used tapes and a tape recorder for my research. I played the first tape and it really broke my heart, an elderly woman( who was in her 80s I'm guessing) was talking about her life in the early 20s and through the depression . She was talking about her life because she " feared she didn't have much more time". It's sad to hear a lost piece if someone's family history just go like that. What should I do? I don't want to record over it .

No Troubles

A couple of days ago when I started to have troubles with the familysearch I had a friend who works with computers for a living check out the situation.  He told me that the problem appeared to lie with lack of testing of the website before launching and not my XP.  I couldn't wait and downloaded Firefox and all worked great.
Today, I forgot to go through Firefox and accessed the site the old way through XP and I am no longer experiencing the problems as before.
I hope everyone else is no longer experiencing the technical difficulties as before.

Response from Feedback

Below is the response I got from Feedback at Family Search re my problems with their new Viewer. I can't understand why, if their old Viewer was working fine, why they had to change it and make us go through more rigamaroll to print out a specific record.

Dear Emilie Garcia,

Thank you for contacting FamilySearch regarding changes.

There have been changes to FamilySearch. To zoom in and out, you will want to use your browser zoom feature. Try control + and control -.

You are correct, you can no longer print a selected portion of the screen in historical records. However, you can save the image as a jpeg image and use the tools on your computer to rotate, resize, cut and print the portions you would like to print.

We are here to help you in any way that we can and want your experience to be a positive one. Best wishes and success in your continuing family history endeavors.

Saludos

Following my Moreno research.

I found at familysearch the marriage for Joseph de Anda with Nicolasa Maria Moreno on april 28 1675 at Lagos de Moreno. The film is 221404 but when looking for the image with that info I cannot find it. Has someone else found this marriage and knows the parents of Joseph de Anda and Nicolasa Maria Moreno?

website troubles?

Now I'm experiencing technical difficulties.
Under Mexican church records I've gone to two different states and at each when I'm at the parroquia of choice, I'm unable to slide the bottom bar to the right to choose which records I'd like to open.  The bar slides automatically back to the left before you can click on a category/date.  Is anyone experiencing the same problem?  I don't see the feedback tab at the right of the page to report a problem.  Thanks,  Alice Blake

Question regarding first names

Dear NR primos,
Would it be common to have different children named "Jose Maria" + a different middle name?

I have been looking for "Jose Maria Gonzalez Ledesma" and I believe I have found him. His baptism is given in acta #3166 in the 1790 Baptisms in Calvillo:
https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11107-161431-98?cc=141…

But the first name of this child is "Jose Maria Nicolas." The date fits and I haven't seen another Nicolas Gonzalez in the family tree and that is why I think this is THE ancestor I've been searching for. I have also considered the possibility that this child died and the parents had another on and simply named him "Jose Maria," and I'll investigate this at a later point in time.

Thanks for your input.

NAVARRO de Tepatitlan

Hola a Todos

Printing Problem on FamilySearch.org

A couple of days ago, I was unable to print just the selected item on the page and sent Family Search an emai. Following is the reply I received today:

Dear Judith Marentes,

Thank you for contacting Family Search regarding the new format for printing documents in historical records available at familysearch.org. We appreciate your frustration and would like to inform you that we expect this issue to be resolved in the next update to FamilySearch.org which should be in about a month’s time.

In the meantime, we have attached a link to a document titled “How do I resize or enhance an image from Historical Records” that will provide you with an alternate way of selecting only the information you want to save. To view the document in full, please click anywhere on the blue underlined title.

We appreciate your patience as our engineers continue to work on the enhancements to the FamilySearch website.

Sincerely,
FamilySearch
support@familysearch.org

Document Links:
How do I resize or enhance an image from Historical Records

FOLLOWING IS THEIR TEMPORARY FIX:

How do I resize or enhance an image from Historical Records
Symptoms (Problems)

Can I enhance or resize the image before I save it?

Is there a way to edit, crop, or resize an image?

Can I adjust the image to make it smaller or larger before I print it?

Answer (Resolution)

There is currently no mechanism within the Image Viewer to accomplish these advanced functions. Edits must be done in your personal image editing program after the image has been saved and open on your own computer.

If the image is too large or too small or if it needs additional enhancements before printing or storing:

When viewing the image in Historical Records, click the Save icon, and save it to your computer.

Then open the file in an image editing program that allows you to edit, resize, and enhance the image.

The edited graphic can then be saved or printed.

I HAD ALREADY FIGURED THIS OUT - HOWEVER - YOU HAVE TO COPY THE WHOLE TWO PAGES OF DOCUMENTS. SINCE I HAVE ALWAYS ZOOMED-IN TO JUST THE SECTION I WANT BEFORE COPYING, NOW THE QUALITY AFTER YOU SAVE, THEN COPY, AND THEN ENLARGE ONLY THAT SECTION YOU WANT, THE QUALITY IS NOT AS GOOD, BUT IT'S OKAY IF ONLY FOR A MONTH!

Family Search

I was trying to use Family Search on a computer with Windows XP and IE 7. For all practical purposes it does not work.

I went to google, searched for Firefox, and downloaded the current version. This relatively quick, but depends on your internet connection.

I did the standard installation (essentially just follow the instructions: press the "run" button). Started Firefox, searched for Family Search, and everything worked without any problems.

When you install Firefox, you have the option of importing your IE favorites (or bookmarks), although I didn't do this.

I was up and running in less than 5 minutes. The website worked without any problems.

Bottom line: Family Search is not compatible with the older software.

Muchas Gracias,

Marcos Carrillo

Hello everyone,

I have posted on this before but I seem to have hit a
wall. I'm looking for the parents of one of my ancestors,
Marcos Carrillo. His wife was Petra Bermudez and I have found
documents on about seven of their children. None give
information on grandparents. I believe he married between
1745-1750 in Jerez, Zac. Most marriage records for those
years in Jerez are missing on the familysearch website, so I
have not had any luck finding it, if it even exists.
When reading some records on their chldren I found that
they lived in a place called Ximulco which then belonged
to the Villa de Jerez. I believe it now belongs to
Huejuquilla el Alto, Jalisco. I have also searched the records
from the church there (San Diego) with no luck. If
anyone has any suggestions or could help I would greatly
apreciate it.

What now?

What is going on now at the "new" Family Search site?

My Windows XP with IE8 was working fine, now it seems they have changed things. I no longer get the little hand that grabs and moves the page around smoothly, nor the little box on the bottom right corner where you could zoom. Instead there seem to be two double pointed crossed arrows that do nothing but make the page jump around erratically, and I can't go from one page to another without a lot of delay. Arrrgh!

Response from Family Search re New Image Access

Below is the response I got from Family Search re my inability to browse the images with their new system.

I did everything they said, and I still cannot make the images stand still---they jump all around and when I enter a new page number it takes so long to change---also using the left/right arrows takes a long time to change the page.

They misunderstood me when I said that instead of the little hand that used to grab the image so we could move around in it smoothly has disappeared and in its place is a diamond shaped cursor composed of two double-pointed arrows, one horizontal and one vertical and in between the points of the arrows are four little boxes. They thought I was referring to the double-pointed arrow in the top menu that says Full Screen. This new cursor doesn't pull the image around like I used to be able to with the little hand.

It is also hard to click on the section of the church records I want. I kept trying to click on Entierros 1867-1896 but the bar on the bottom of the list kept going back to the beginning Bautismos. Even the list of records doesn't stand still.

I am in tears here,

Emilie

September 14, 2011

Dear Emilie Garcia,

Thank you for contacting Family Search in regard to image access on our site.

We have replicated your search as well as we can without specifics and have determined that your problem is most likely related to the upgrade of our Image Viewer which was performed yesterday. During the upgrade there appeared to be some issues with viewing images. Today I was able to view images and move from image to image without a problem. There does seem to still be an issue with the full screen function that you mention as the double pointed arrows. This should be taken care of soon as the engineers continue to tweek the function. The box at the bottom of the page has also disappeared and a zoom function is available on the top left. When the image was fully zoomed, we were still able to move the image around although the little hand is not visible.

Please check back at the site today to see if the problems you experienced are now resolved.

We have also found that at times there are issues with IE7 and IE8 that affects viewing of the images. If you are still experiencing problems, you might want to try the following in IE8:

Copy this for the future it is different than the KD
1. In the IE7 or IE8 browser, select from the main menu (not the toolbar on the same line as the tabs), Tools -> Internet Options.
2. Under “Browsing History”, click on the “Delete” button.
3. Select only “Temporary Internet Files”, “Cookies”, “History” and “Form Data”. Unselect ALL other check boxes. Then click on the “Delete” button.
4. Click the “OK” button on the open dialog after the delete has finished.
5. Close the browser.
6. Reopen the browser and go to https://www.familysearch.org.
7. Once the page has come up, press to refresh the java script that the browser is running.
8. Close browser and refresh a second time.

Again, we thank you for contacting Family Search. If you continue to experience problems, please feel free to contact us. We appreciate your patronage of our site and wish you the best in your research.

Sincerely,

To Armando re San Felipe film

Armando,

I just received the message below from Feedback at Family Search. they told me the same thing you told me, that the matrimonios for 1618 are to be found in the Bautismos de Castas 1600-1672.

So, I learned a lot from you, that I need to check the dates in the Catalog. I wish though that Family Search had given me a link directly to the image I wanted, but they would not have the time to do that. It will just require me searching each and every image. Ay, ay, ay.
