DNA Testing - which provider is best?

My father who is 76 yrs old (GGparents from Chihuahua) and my uncle is is 93 yrs old (GGparents from Sonora) and my father in Law 70 yrs old (Teocaltiche, Jalisco) have agreed to do DNA testing. Can anyone recommend a DNA service provider that they have used in the past. Looking for something priced reasonable with the most information returned. Thanks for your assistance.

Surname "Bais" in Zacatecas

My great grandmother was Loreto Bais. Born in Mexico somewhere around 1868, she eventually settled down with a Tereso Sifuentes (born around 1865) somewhere in Zacatecas. It is said that they were both married with children, before somehow becoming single and finding each other. I don't know when they got together. I do know that they had several children, at least 6. I can only find some of their children's baptism certicates, showing births in northern Mexico, mostly in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon between 1899 and 1915.

I've seen a photo of Loreto Bais, she was obviously an indigenous woman. Oral history says she was Yaqui, but those who say so really don't know for sure. I did find out through a border crossing record that she was born in a town named Agostadero. The death certificate says she was born in 1868 to Andres Bais and Antonia de Lira. I'm unsure of the exact spelling of the name Bais.

Does anyone have any kind of information that could help me find where Loreto is from, or anything about her lineage? Or anything related to indigenous peoples with the last name Bais?

Thank you,
Roberto

DNA Tests for Genealogy Purposes

I think there is a lot of confusion here about DNA, how it's tested, and how to interpret our results. I hope that the below will clear up some confusions...

There are four (4) types of DNA in humans that are used for molecular genealogy:

1) Autosomal DNA - inherited from both MOTHER & FATHER (we inherit 50% from mom/50% from dad)

2) X-chromosome DNA - determines gender; whether we are female (XX) or male (XY), females pass on their X chromosome to ALL children, fathers pass on their X
chromosome to their DAUGHTERS only and their Y chromosomes to their SONS only. X-chromosome DNA changes rapidly from generation-to-generation, and so it is not very useful for deep ancestry research

3) Y-chromosome DNA - only men have this and because men only have 1 Y-chromosome, it passes unchanged from FATHER-to-SON over many generations going back deep into one's ancestry on DIRECT male line

4) Mitochondrial DNA - both men and women have this, but only a MOTHER can pass it on to her SONS and DAUGHTERS; it passes from generation-to-generation unchanged for thousands of years (deep-deep ancestry on DIRECT female line)

A man can be haplotype R1b (European), but still be 30% native-American, African, Asian, whatever. In this case, we only tested his Y-chromosome and results prove that his direct PATERNAL line has European origins. Now, if he tests his Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), he can also have a European result, but at the same time be 30% Native-American, African, Asian...whatever. We only tested his MATERNAL line

In order to get one's complete ethnic origin breakdown, one needs to get an AUTOSOMAL DNA analysis. This test takes a different strand of human DNA (NOT related to yDNA or mtDNA), that is passed on randomly from BOTH mother and father to each child. We get 50% from mother and 50% from father. Our mother got 50% from her mother and 50% from her father...and our father got 50% from his father & 50% from his mother...etc, etc...all the way up our family tree. It is a complete genetic record.

I think that as more and more NR members get tested, we will learn that we who descend from the founding families of Jalisco, Zacatecas & Aguascalientes are not 100% pure Spanish/Portuguese/Italian/French . We are all a mixture of the three major ethnic groups who populated the region and who comprise our ancestry: European, Native American and African. This is being proven by DNA test results every day.

Nancy's Elusive Grandmother

Many thanks to the responses from George, Patty, & Alicia.
Unfortunately your advice doesn't work because my grandmother's
married name (I think) was Blanche, but maybe Blanco. In
a death certificate for a daughter, she used Marquez, and
in another document she used Duval as surnames. I have searched
all these names. She told my father he was born in Ca. but he
couldn't find his BC in Sacramento. There are absolutely no records
available, be they baptismal, marriage, or ? I truly believe my
grandmother deliberately did not want to be found. So, my hope is
someone can help identify and tie her to the Guerrero family in the
photograph. From that one clue, Jesus Sanchez Guerrero and the
1930 Mexico census I have learned that this family has a very
important background in Guadalajara history. I think my grandmother
had something to hide from them, but left me with this mystery as
to who I really am. As I mentioned before, maybe Francisco Sanchez
Guerrero is my grandmother's father, but I haven't found a marriage
certificate for him in Guadalajara which could lead me to a family.

Patty's family tree

Believe me, after more than 10 years of patiently searching for my grandmother's name
and background and finding literally nothing,my patience is running out but I haven't
yet given up. She doesn't seem to exist in any records I've searched and I don't know her maiden name, so how to find her? She was born about 1892, I believe in Mexico, but have no proof. I am now researching the surnames of Guerrero, Sanchez, Flores, in Guadalajara, based on a family group photo from about 1908.
I have looked for a marriage record (not found) for Francisco Sanchez Guerrero
as I am hoping he is my grandmother's father, which would lead to breaking down
my huge brick wall. You can see a photo of my grandmother, Alma Blanche holding a
baby, the Guerrero family photo with her seated in the center row, and a photo of Jesus Sanchez Guerrero. But due to an older age, I think his brother, Francisco
might be my grandmother's father and the man in the photo. To see the photos please
go to the "latest images" link on the right side of the page.
Patty, thanks so much for your info but the names don't seem to match my searches.

What does "C.C." stand for on a baptism?

Hi, I have recently noticed that in the baptisms of San Martin Hidalgo, Jalisco from the 1840s to the 1880s many baptisms have the letters "C.C.", "C.Y.", or "Y.Y.". In the baptism of María Demetria Quintero, just below her name are the letters "C.C.". Could these letters mean the parents "castas"? Does "C." mean criollo or castizo, and does "Y." stand for "yndio"? Note that during this time period the letter "i" was replaced with "y".

Here is the link to the baptisms

Valente.

References on DNA testing, and related topics

I've recently read a couple of books on genetic testing, and related topics. While they do not answer all my questions, they seem to be pretty reasonable:

(1) Trace Your Roots with DNA by Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak (this is her name and not a typo) and Ann Turner.

Copyright 2004, so perhaps a little dated, but still a reasonable discussion of what DNA testing can do.

Still in print @ $16.95

(2) The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey by Spencer Wells

Copyright 2002, also perhaps a little dated.

Spencer Wells is the person involved with the Genographics Project (National Geographic). This book is about population migration, more of a "deep ancestry" approach. It would be useful to read this and watch the National Geographic video (watch the video first).

Still in print at $14.95.

I ordered both of them from an online bookstore, none of the brick & mortar stores had them.

I'm still looking for something that does an in-depth description of haplo types.
