I am over at the National Archives looking up border crossing records and am having no luck finding El Paso crossings from 1916. Does anybody know if these crossings are available on microfilm anywhere? The college student staff member who is working here tonight told me that those years for El Paso are not filmed... but I want to make sure.

On a brighter note, Chris Pineda, I have found the border crossing records for your great-grandparents Nicanor Pineda and Emilia Gonzalez. I will scan them and send them to you.

First of all I want to thank all of you brave and patient souls who have
gone on the new website. I know that changes are generally hard to
swallow and that there are glitches in the site still that make it
somewhat cumbersome to use. but perhaps some of you will be enticed by
some of the new features we will have.

- Much much much more storage space for your files. So if you
were relegated to Ranchos2, or even if you were not but wanted to look
up someone's files who was relegated in Ranchos2. you will have to do so
no longer. All of the files should fit in the site and the description
of the file folders is searchable so you can simply type a surname or a
location and find the file folder with the relevant information

- The user database is searchable. We have already imported
the who's who database from YahooGroups and once we get the remainder of
members to fill in their profiles, you can simply search for a surname
in the user database and find who is researching that surname. Same
goes for locations.

- GEDCOM files. You will be able to upload GEDCOM files.
These will be viewable only by members, just like any other file but
viewers can navigate interactively through the trees. Furthermore, the
GEDCOM files are not downloadable by anyone other than the owner of the
file. A very useful feature is that members can use the online GEDCOM
database to cooperate with other members on building up a family line.

Please go on and try out the site. Let me or Joseph know If you have
any questions or suggestions.

I don't really know why, but PAF is available in Spanish in only Version 4.0.4, whereas the latest version is 5.2.18. I have not used the 4.0.4 so I am not sure what charting and reporting capabilities there are, but I know that there are a few members that use both the English and Spanish language version much in the way that you are envisioning.

As far as conversion, I don't think you really need to worry about it. You can just open up the PAF file that you have created in the English Version of the software in the Spanish Version.

He is very strapped for money and is trying to raise money to publish these works and I promised him I would try to get some donations.  I have already received some from a couple of generous Ranchos members.  My parents are headed back down to Mexico in a couple of weeks and I would like to send the donation down with them.  Please let me know if you would be willing to contribute, however small an amount.  I will make the donation on behalf of the group and will list the names of the contributors in my letter to him.

Welcome to the wonderful world of genealogy! What I'm sharing may
sound very trying but I must tell you the longer you do genealogy
the more satisfaction you get when you work long and hard and your
family is reclaimed after going through many records. I found a
record I'd had for 3 years the key to taking my Gutierrez family
from 1750 in Jalisco to 1650 in Michoacan! At other times I can
thank another person who's shared their information and records that
opened a door for me. My husband had done the records for his family
back to 1854 and found someone else online through Familysearch.com
who'd done that line back to mid 1500's and was more than willing to
share including documentation.

When I started reading records I would discard all names that were
spelled differently... WRONG!!! I now know the families seldom even
saw the records and the people giving the information were not
always the people the records were about. There were many times
where the scribe put the grandparents as parents and the birth dates
were very wrong. I have a marriage record for an ancestor that says
he was 50 but he was really 72 when he married a second time!

You may find the people using different names during their lifetime,
I have an ancestor who appears as Antonio Carmen, Jose Carmel,
Antonio del Carmen but they are all the same person. I've found
times when the men all used the fathers surname and the women used
their mothers and grandmothers surnames, they have been very
challenging to put together as siblings.

I've found the spelling of their surnames change from record to
record with the scribe and local customs being in control. De la
Cueva becomes Cuevas, De Los Rios became Del Rio and then Rios...
De Avila became Davila and Avila. De la Torre sometimes stayed that
way or changed to Torres. And then their are the families who got to
chose which one of the hyphenated surname to use.. Villasenor y Jaso
became Villa or Villasenor with other siblings using just Jaso!

It sounds confusing but once you get familiar with the names and
style of the records for that area it all comes together.. The parts
of the puzzle finally fall into place and you understand why we do
this... to honor our families and to reclaim a history many of us
never knew existed.

Hello,
I am new to the ranchos group. My potential link to the
target areas is my ancestor Jose(f) Manuel BORONDA. It
has been said that he was born in Jerez, in Guadalajara,
and in Spain. So far there is no proof of any of this.
He would have been born about 1750. It is documented that
he came to California in 1769. He married Maria Gertrudis
HIGUERA at Mission San Carlos in Monterey, California on
23 January 1790. He was 40 at that time.
I have learned that BORONDA is likely a Basque name and
that it has *numerous* spellings! There are very few,
under any spelling, that I can find in Aer or Argena III.
Those that I find on LDS are in Basque Country.
It is my understanding that vital records in Zacatecas
were burned in the revolution, but what about the Catholic
church records -- does anyone know if they were kept?

I guess the answer to your question depends on the software that you are using. I use an online database called The Next Generation that allows you to enter the "DE" or "DE LOS" or "DE LA" in a seperate field from the main surname such that when you search or sort by surname these are not taken into account.

When I import the GEDCOM from this software into PAF, I get the same problem that you do... a bunch of people end up under the letter "D" and I forget to look for them there.

I definitely like entering the name as it appears... for example a lot of contemporary names were once "DE" names such as Rios was "DE LOS RIOS" or "DEL RIO" and Torres was "DE LA TORRE", etc. so I would not enter such names simply as "TORRE".

What software are you using? Other than ROBALCALVA, do you have any "DE" names such as those I mention above?

The public service chanel here in Everett, Chanel 9 has a show on the
genealogy search for Blacks to find thier genetic makeup. Since I have
traced 3 Mulato lines in 3 different states, Jalisco, Zacatecas and
Michoacan I was very interested in what they had to say. They shared
the fact that the Portuguese controlled the slave trade and that in
the time frame I'm looking at, mid 1600's the odds are the slaves were
from Angola. They shared the major advancments they are making daily
in genetic testing now being able to isolate genes to find what
percentages we are of different ethnic backgrounds. I find this all
very exciting and hope if you get the chance that you will get to
watch this very informative show. Even if you have no black ancestors
the sharing of genetic information and genealogy research methods is
great and well worth watching.

Here is another ancestor of mine.  I had trouble finding him because
by the 1700s they were spelling it Marcelino Suriano and his
descendants had turned into mulatos in Salitrillo.   
 
I remember that when I tried to get some records from Seville, they would
only send it to me if I had a fax machine.  I don't have one, but that
would have been neat to get them that way and not wait so long for the
snail-mail.

Below is a copy of what I found today on one of my ancestors in
Ancestry.com.  The original entry in Ancestry.com that I printed out back
in August 2004 said "Extracted from documents in the Archivo General de Indias
in Seville, copies of which are among the holdings of the Family History Library
in Salt Lake City".  Now I notice that this entry has that sentence
truncated after "copies of".  I wonder why they did that?  Did they
not want the public to know that the FHC has those records, or did the FHC make
them eliminate that part?  They only give some book as a resource. 

 
That time that I tried to navigate the AER online, I got as far as getting
a password and I pulled up any old record, and it was amazing!  The actual
photo of the document from the 1500s appeared on the screen and it had all kinds
of info, but the destination was also "Nuevo Espana" (like in the one below) not
any particular state in Mexico because there probably weren't any states yet.
When I tried to find my particular surnames, I had no luck in navigating to
that point (too mensa).  Only Ancestry.com gets me to my surnames, but
alas, they don't have the actual scans of the AER documents.

through the words so I can sign up. In case you're wondering how I
can research in the Spanish language when I can't read it, I search
using my family names. When I get a hit, I make a copy and translate
it later. Simple, time consuming, and not very accurate. But it is
all I can do.

Dear Ranchos Members,   I thought I would share some of my musings and findings. Yesterday I called my sister-in law to share some information regarding one of our common ancestors going back 4 generations in Tlachichila, Zac. and also to ask a question about some Mexican History regarding this region. Last week while reading film # 0226731, Matrimonios de Nochistlan, years 1842-1847. Our ancestor, Mateo Ruiz de Esparza's first marriage to Maria, Florencia Gonzales in January 1845 states that he is from Jalpa Zac. but I noticed that within that time span there were many other marriages which showed that either the bride or the groom were from Jalpa and were new arrivals to Tlachichila, some for a few months and some a few years. It made me wonder why so many new arrivals from Jalpa. What made these people leave Jalpa Zac which is a larger town and come to Tlachichila which is so remote and isolated? and only has subsistence
farming, no other industry? I thought to ask her since she was educated in Mexico at UDG and lived in Guadalajara up until the time she and my brother married in 1996. Well she majored in philosophy and not Mexican History but she did provide a few possible clues but not enough so I ask anyone in the group who might have or know a little history on this region if you might know what was going on in the area of Jalpa Zac that made people flee from this region?   Now instead of asking  question I am providing one of my new findings, this I learned from my sister-in-law yesterday. I shared with her what I thought was a new or unusual surname. I had seen the surname Idem on a few documents but could not trace it back to anyone. I asked her about this since she studied latin and she set me straight. Idem is not a surname as I previously thought. I had seen it many times and it was
always used in the context as follows,  Jose Martinez y Magdalena Idem.   It is probable that everyone else already knew this but just in case there is one person who does not know this l thought I would share this with all of you.   Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo   Here is the definition per the dictionary. Therefore this would mean Jose Martinez and Magdalena of the same surname as Jose Martinez

Our vacation starts April 6th in Rocklin, CA, then we spend about 5-
7 days in Ogden, UT where we will meet with Rosalinda and visit the
FHL in SLC again. The 14th of April we take off by way of Hiway 80
and head back east to Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. Before
we arrive back East, we plan on visiting friends in Chicago, Cousin
in Michigan, and a cyber cousin in Pittsburg. Those cities are
followed by an Uncle in Richmond, VA, hopefully Joseph in NC, then
friends in GA where we will stay for about 3 days. After Georgia,
we head up to Paducah, KY for the world's biggest Quilt Show.
(Hiway 20 and Hiway 40.) From KY, we hope to make it to a Reyes
Family Reunion in the Houston, TX area. (Hiway 55 and Hiway 10)
That should be the last week-end of April. We plan on using Hiway
10 and Hiway 25 from Houston, thru Albuquerque, NM and then finally
home sometime the first week of May. We will be puting a few miles
on our RV.
If we are going to be in your neighborhood, please contact us
