IGI research tricks

When searching the FamilySearch.org and the IGI. Try a exact name search with both parents surnames only.

1. Enter both surnames in the last name field.... i.e. Gonzales Calvillo
2. Enter Country....i.e Mexico
3. Check the box (Use exact spelling)

This will give you everyone in Mexico with the parents Gonzales and Calvillo. Try different corruptions of the surnames. Calbillo, Gonsales, Gonzalez, Goncales, Goncalez. It can be time consuming....but it's better than not finding anything when in fact your families are really there...or until the LDS church can load all the extractions in.

It's true sometimes L looks like S's on documents. Don't be afraid to try it.....i.e Moya, Moia, Molla

Also, If you know the region, try a batch search....this is very fun. In fact I just taught a lady two weeks ago who was stuck on her family, and with this trick she ended up finding nearly the the siblings and where the parents were married.

1. enter last name only
2. enter region
3 enter state

This will give you everyone in that state, scroll thru until you find someone within your town and time period. It doesn't matter if there not yours. Select that person. Go to the area where the batch number is located. Click on the batch number. Enter any name you like in any field. I.E. fathers first name only.....best to use mothers last name in the mothers last name field. If entering mothers last name only all women will appear and sometimes you will find miss spelled names on the father...that's how I helped my new friend.

There is no need to enter complete names, sometimes less is better.

Have Fun....

Gonzales and Calvillo Familes of Aguascalientes

I have just uploaded a small portion of my genealogy, These are the Gonzales and Calvillo families.

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/14965

The Gonzales' are in the area of Tapias and Ojocaliente, Aguas from about 1728 to 1887. As of yet I have not made the connection to the Gonzales de Hermosillo family. But I do have a direct line to that family as well.

The Calvillo families are from Texas, Asientos, Maguey, Huerta de Gil, Huerta del Rio, El Sauz, Tepesalilla, Aguascalientes with records from Calvillo and Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes also included is Villa del Refugio, Zacatecas. As far as I know they are not related.

Vault films

> . . .I'm curious about vault films.. are there films that can only be seen
> by going to Salt Lake in person? Does this mean they are not listed online
> in family search?

ALL the geneaolgy films are listed in the catalog found on familyseaerch
along with where they can be found:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp. Copies of
ALL the films can be viewed by patrons in their local Family History Centers
without having to travel to SLC.

The vault refers to a huge storage area in SLC hewn out of a granite
mountain where the temperature is constant and the elements are kept at bay
in order to preserve the films. This is where all the master copies of the
genealogy films owned by the LDS church are stored.

When a film is requested by a patron, a copy is made and sent to the main
library in SLC where it remins -- or the local Family History Center if that
is who made the request, and after three renewals the film will remain in
the local center on indefinite loan as well. I suspect the three renewals
pay for the cost of duplicating the film.

In some cases no one has ever asked to use a film so a copy has never been
made to be viewed and the only copy is the master copy in the vault. Hence
it takes a few days to receive a film from the vault, and if you only have a
few days at the library, it can really impact your visit when the films
aren't available.

If you look at the familysearch website, it will tell you whether the films
are in the vault, which means no copies are available in the library.
However, as Josie mentioned, you can request that a copy be sent to the
library before making the trip.

Hope this helps.

Fabian Garcia - Pioneer Hispanic Horticulturist 1871-1948

===> Click to hear "Fabian Garcia - Pioneer Hispanic Horticulturist
1871-1948"

Dr. Fabian Garcia devoted his life to horticultural science. His
work as a horticulturist changed the face of New Mexico agriculture, and
that of a nation. Garcia was a member of New Mexico State University's
first graduating class in 1894. When he became the director of New
Mexico State University's Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension
Service in 1913, he was the first Hispanic in the nation to lead a
land-grant agricultural research station.
One of Garcia's most significant contributions to horticulture was
the development of a new pod type in chile peppers, the "New Mexican"
(mistakenly called "Anaheim"). This new pod variety opened commercial
markets for New Mexico chile and established the New Mexico chile pepper
food industry. He is known as the Father of the Mexican Food industry of
the United States. He was also instrumental in establishing the pecan
industry in New Mexico. He planted some of the first pecan trees in the
Mesilla Valley, and today New Mexico has more than 30,000 acres of
pecans. In addition, he laid the groundwork for New Mexico's successful
onion industry (more).

Upcoming trip to Salt Lake City October 2006

If anyone needs to order VAULT FILM for doing research at Salt Lake City FHC
the following phone number is the one to call and order your film:

801-240-2334.

I spoke with Sister Hayden at that number this morning and verified that
this is the correct number to call when ordering VAULT FILM to be viewed
there. She said to be certain and specify that you are part of a group of
genealogists who will be there doing research. Usually they limit their
requests to only 5 film at a time but she said they will order any amount
for us. (If you encounter any problems, please let me know because I have
another phone number that will assist us.) This is the phone number for the
International dept. (inside the little window where you pick up film) in the
basement where the Mexico and other international film are located.

Please be thinking about which film you want to order and order these well
in advance........like today! :-)

Details of the Hispanic Conference and information on seminars, lodging,
etc. have been sent in other messages. If anyone needs more info, please
feel free to e-mail me and I will be happy to assist you.

Hope to see a lot of you there!

Comcast Blocking Nuestros Ranchos as SPAM

Hello Arturo,

I have tried to contact (via email) comcast, but their response is
that they think there is an on-going spam issue ...

---------
Thank you for contacting Comcast Customer Security Assurance.
This is to notify you that your request for removal from the comcast.net blocklist has been received.

The following IP's were found within your request. Below each one, we've included the results of our research.
- 66.33.206.23 -
Your request for IP block removal has been denied for the following reason:

Our records indicate that the IP submitted has repeatedly been blocked, indicating an ongoing spam issue from the originating domain.

To pursue this issue further, your mail administrator will need to contact us at 856.317.7272.

Sincerely,
Comcast Customer Security Assurance
----------

I have not received any email from Nuestros Rachos since the date of
your post below, and so I expect I will not receive any reply.

This really ticks me off. I got comcast partly because a previous
provider would not allow me to _send_ any email because they thought
mine was a spam address. The problem was my hard-wired verizon card ip
address was within a range some one else was using for spam, and there
was nothing I could do about it. They refused to do anything either
because they hired their spam blocking from another service and _they_
didn't want to help. The only other solution was to get another ip
address, which Nuestros Ranchos may be able to do quite easily since
it's probably software controllable. I hope this gets resolved because
I'm not getting any mail from Nuestros Ranchos.

I will call Comcast monday and try to voice my complaint to a live
person. But I'm not expecting much help. The same spam blocking
service is used by MANY providers in an attempt to control spam.

Hola Enrique, Juan Pablo y Jorge Luis:

------------------------------------------------

http://www.ochocolumnas1.net/2003/septiembre/26/NUEVAS_SECCIONES/cuerpo…

Soledad, religiosa salesiana; María Guadalupe, misionera del Espíritu Santo;

Escobedo's parents were? I am trying to figure out if he is the same Juan de
Escobedo who married a certain Melchora Cabrera. I am descended from the
latter Juan de Escobedo who is either a son or the same person as the Juan de
Escobedo who married Teresa Ulloa Ruiz de Esparza.

I do believe her father is Nicolas Ulloa. I also noticed in Nicolas de Anda
Sanchez's book that he listed a confirmation of a Teresa Ulloa who's parents
were Juan de Ulloa and Maria Ruiz de Esparza. The date of the confirmation
was 6 Jan 1654 in Teocaltiche, Jalisco.

The book I'm working on is my direct line that goes back to the early days of
Aguascalientes in a dictionary type format. More like a who's who. My
families are the Ruiz de Esparza, Romo de Vivars, Tiscareno's, Munos de
Hermosillo's to name a few.

Rose

Arturo,According to the

Thank you so much for that information. I think that is definitely the
correct Teresa Ruiz de Esparza... the records in Tlaltenango are simply
missing the Ulloa but the dates and names otherwise match. So you think that
she is the daughter of Maria Ruiz de Esparza and Nicolas Ulloa?

What is the book that you are working on?

Does anybody have the referenced Teocaltiche film so that they can look up
the parents of these two spouses for me?

In Nicolas de Anda Sanchez's new book he has listed Teresa as Teresa Ulloa
Ruiz Esparza married Capt. Juan de Escobedo on 6 June 1669 in Teocaltiche.

In my book I'm working on, I have:

Ruiz de Esparza, Maria
The daughter of Lope Ruiz de Esparza and Francisca Gabay. She married Nicolas
de Ulloa. Her parents were known residents of Aguascalientes from 1622 to
1652. She is mentioned in the requested marriage dispensation of her
granddaughter, Elvira de Ulloa to Joseph de Torres on 1 January 1689 in
Teocaltiche, Jalisco.

Dream Trip

Hi "Dreamers"

I would like to make a couple of suggestions for your dream trip. I will not be making the trip since I was there last year.

Flying to Guadalajara and making it your starting point for the trip is an excellent idea. From Guadalajara there are several
ways you can go:

1.-Guadalajara, Yahualica (there is a good sea food restaurant right as you turn off the main road to go into Yahualica, their
specialty is "Pescado Sarandeado" ) Mexticacán, Nochistlán, Teocaltiche , Villa Hidalgo ( Villa Hidalgo is a big textile manufacturing
center. There is a huge shopping center in the middle of town where people from all over the country come to buy clothing for their
shopes or boutiques wholesale and retail. Good bargains can be found here). The town also has an excellent Chinese food restaurant
in case you get tired of Mexican food. Villa Hidalgo is almost half way between Teocaltiche and Aguascalientes. From Aguascalientes you'll probably want to continue north to Rincón de Romos and on to Zacatecas about 80 miles from Aguas. Zacatecas has an airport with daily scheduled
flights north in case you choose to return that way, but then, that would only be half the trip!

The return trip from Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and then on to San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalostotitlán ( here you can go to Santa Ana
and visit Santo Toribio, you don't want to miss this! ) Tepatitlán, (famous for it's "Carnitas") and Guadalajara. Instead of going directly into Guadalajara, the trip should take you Chapala and Ajijic. A beautiful, lush, green, place on the shore of Lake Chapala. Here, you are only about 30 miles south of Guadalajara.
2.- The other Option would be to fly into Zacatecas and start your trip from North to South or
3.- Fly to Aguascalientes and split your days. Two or three days to go north to Zacatecas and then the rest to go to Guadalajara and return to Aguascalientes, make it your "Home base" .

These are only suggestions...The members of the group making the trip should decide where, when and which way they want to go.
Planning is the key to any succesful and enjoyable trip. I am sure all of you will enjoy it and will have a lifetime of memories from it.

I know most of you have already thought about this, but I'll remind you anyway: A U.S. Passport or Green Card will be required. A digital camera is a must, and maybe a small voice recorder for interviews, and last but not least: Imodium A-D.

The Indigenous custom of using flowers sounds very beautiful. The lazo
which is a rather large rosary used for marriage ceremony is also very
meaningful in having Our Lady's blessing of the union.

This is an interesting article about the meaning and survival of some of
our
Mexican wedding traditions. The only thing that I disagree with is the

"lasso" - I heard that the indigenous had used flowers to encircle the
couple,
and this was substituted with the "lasso - rosario" with the Spanish
influence.
Who knows - but it is interesting nevertheless!

Update on Hispanic Conference in Salt Lake City October 2006

The Hispanic Conference in Salt Lake City will be held Friday, October 13th
and Saturday, October 14, 2006. There is no charge for any of the
seminars and you do not have to pre-register. All the presentations will be
in Spanish and the speakers are bilingual. The schedules will follow in a
separate e-mail.

1. Salt Lake Plaza Best Western Hotel has a limited number rooms for us at
$82.00 plus tax for a room for two persons. It is located next door to the
FHC Library. Their website is:
www.plaza-hotel.com and their toll free number is: 1-800-366-3684. You have
to mention "Ranchos Genealogy Group" to get the discounted price since there
are a few rooms reserved for us. There is NO free continental breakfast
but they have a nice restaurant that serves a buffet as well as good menu
selections. Since October is a very busy time for them I was only able to
hold a small block of rooms from October 8th through October 15th. You can
choose to stay ANY number of days between Oct 8th - 15th but you would have
to check with them to see if rooms are available for any other dates.

2. Howard Johnson Express Inn offers us a rate of $35.00 plus tax (total
$39.32) for a single queen bed room and a rate of $49.00 plus tax (total
$55.05) for a
room with two double beds for 1 to 4 persons. Go to "Google" and type in
"Howard Johnson Express Salt Lake City" to see their facility. Their toll
free number is: 1-800-541-7639. Ask for Mira or Connie and mention
"Ranchos Genealogy Group" for the special rate. They offer a FREE
continental breakfast (coffee, juice, bagels, cold cereal, etc) and they
are walking distance from the Library (about two blocks). There is a free
trolley that passes nearby and takes you to the Library if you do not want
to walk. This hotel is able to provide rooms for us for any number of days
you might need......provided reservations are made EARLY.

Both hotels provide shuttle service to and from the airport. Upon your
arrival at the Salt Lake City airport you can call 801-521-3450 for shuttle
service to Howard Johnson Express Inn. For those staying at the Salt Lake
Plaza Best Western you can call 801-521-0130 for their shuttle service.
There are courtesy telephones available near the baggage area of the
airport.

Each person will be responsible for making their own reservations, travel
arrangements, etc

Please let me know if you are interested in going, the number of persons
attending, the dates you will attend, etc.

Update on Hispanic Conference in Salt Lake CityOctober 2006

Josie, I'm not sure this is what you're interested in, but I was at the UTSA FHC this evening, and the librarian said he could make photos of microfilm entries for me there. I thanked him, but I had nothing to photograph, yet. If this is what you need, perhaps your FHC could communicate with this one. Alice Blake

Hi Alicia!

I will keep you posted when I hear from others as to where everyone is
staying.

On another subject, In April 2006 you responded to John on the subject of
viewers at the FHCs. You mentioned that you have learned to take photos of
the documents at the viewers using a mat board and that you needed to use a
tripod to steady the photo. How did that turn out? I tried this today at
the FHC but I must be doing something wrong because it did not work.......I
used a mini-tripod. Please let me know if you have had success doing this.

Thanks a lot! I will be in touch soon about the hotel rooms.

Thanks Josie for all the legwork to help get us there.

I stayed at the Howard Johnson Express during my one and only visit. The
rooms are very comfortable and it is within walking distance. I would like
to stay there again if I go and would like to know if anyone else is staying
there? I would rather not share a room with anyone and this is affordable
for me. Only problem is walking home alone late in the evening. It is not
the best of neighborhoods at night, typical downtown with vagrants etc. If
there is someone to walk back with I will make my plans to come to the
conference and stay a couple of days to do some research and meet and
socialize with my fellow Ranchos members.
