My re-introduction

My name is Joshua Goodson. I do not have much information except what I have learned from my mother. My Grandfather was born in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico. His name was Francisco Romo Villanueva. He was born about 1923 and died in 1997 in California, USA. I am not sure when he moved to the United States. I was told he had a couple of sisters and maybe two brothers from Aguascalientes. They may still be living so cannot post their names. I have pictures that were sent from his family in Aguas (all were dated in the 1950's and were stamped with by a portrait studio in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico. I really want to know more about him and my ancestors. He also had nephews and other family there. If anyone know anything at all, please let me know. I am new to this! Thank you....

Hi Joshua,

I do know a lot of Romos in Aguascalientes, especifically the descendants of
Miguel Romo Gonzalez. I daresay all Romos in Aguascalientes are related so
you have a chance to locate your relatives right away.

Look at this link http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/15677

That is the whole genealogy since the fist Romo in Aguascalientes, Diego
Romo de Vivar born ca. 1600.

I hope this is of help.

PS I'm still waiting on people wanting to share info on DIAZ DE LEON and
TISCAREÑO surrnames from AGUASCALIENTES.

Hello all,
I have not yet sent in my intro so I thought that I would. My name is Michelle Gonzales but it is my husband John's family that I am researching in Jalisco. To be more specific his mother's family. They lived in the San Julian area (I believe some still do) and I just started searching the Baptismal records for 1905-1912 (LDS Film # 1151525). I also ordered Baptismal records for 1895-1905 (LDS Film # 1151524) but it has not come in yet. So if anyone has any requests, I usually go on Teusdays and Thursdays. I am pregnant and am due on June 1st so not sure how much I'll get to finish by then. I have also updated my husband's tree on the website after finding more information through these records which can be found here: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/16434

Surnames I have found so far in San Julian area: Ramires, Perez, Martin(ez), Magana, Munoz, Garcia-Ramirez, Padilla, Centeno and Escoto. 1900-30s.

At some point I will also be researching the following (found possible family records from the IGI on LDS website):
San Miguel El Alto 1850-70s (Nasario Ramires and Silveria Martinez family/ Casimiro Peres and Anita Ramires family)
La Inmaculada Concepcion, San Diego De Alejandria 1820-50s (Nasario Ramires and Silveria Martin(ez) family)
Santa Maria De Guadalupe, Arandas early 1800s (Antonio Ramires and Ma Acencion Velasquez family possible parents of Nasario Ramires)

I am new to researching in Jalisco but not new to genealogy. So I am extremely grateful for this website and all the wonderful information to be found here.
Thank you for letting me join,
Michelle

1885-1908 Huejucar, Jalisco marriages

I ordered up the microfilm for Huejucar, Jalisco Catholic Church marriages for 1885-1908. I hoped that it would reveal a lot of info on our ancestors because there should be about 20+ ancestors in the records.

If you dont find the records, (I learned this) just because its not there doesnt mean they lack it, remember not everyone married in the place of the birth. I have Camino ancestors who lived in Fresnillo and married all the way in Guadalajara! Back in the 1600's. It was more common in those times to travel that far I guess. Sometimes it makes it harder to trace ertain lines when they travel that much! Just a note.

There are no batch numbers for death records because they are not indexed Jose.

BTW... this sort of topic should really go into the research forum as you are discussing genealogical research. The general forum is meant for tangential topics such as history, culture, etc.

A slight correction and addition. I meant to say " the DE LEON children of my GGF Nicolas de Leon" and not "siblings". Nicolas' wife was Ma. del REFUGIO COVARRUBIAS.

His children were all born in Huejucar, Jalisco and they were: : MARIA EUGENIA DE LEON (b. 22 Nov 1869), PASCUAL DE LEON (b. 19 Dec 1872), ESPIRIDION DE LEON (b. 14 Dec 1874) and my grandfather FRANCISCO DE LEON (birthdate unknown -- probably born between 1880-1884).

I think Marisela means "La Laja" between Jalos and Valle de Guadalupe, not "la alaja", b/c she mentioned that her family probably came from Jalos.

This is somewhat related. I would appreciate confirmation that I am interpreting "causo a la fabrica (some amount of $)" , at the end of death records, correctly. I am assuming it refers to money paid for the funeral (coffin, grave diggers) in behalf of the deceased out of church funds. Gracias.

And then totally unrelated: Does anyone know what "nativo de Lugar segundo Capital de Francia" refers to? I know what it literally means, but I have no idea what city would be considered the Second Capital of France, either in 1900, when the record was written, or c1844, when the referent was born. Muchas gracias.

Raquel,

I think Lugar Segundo Capital de Francia could mean the Second Arrondissement in Paris. The city is divided into 18 or so "districts", areas, or neighborhoods, kind of like our districts in our cities.

I don't know about Causo a la Fabrica, but I think you are right about it referring to the construction of the coffin, etc.

Irma, this is a wonderful way of explaining the times and customs. I wonder if the priest even knew during those times what the scribe had written. I've also come to the conclusion that missing grandparents and incorrect ages were more likely because the witness or padrinos were answering questions and they simply didn't know the information especially at baptisms when the mother was not even present since the custom was for her to be in bed for 40 days.

thank you, Linda in Everett

Hola Rodolfo,
Como has estado?

My Spanish is lacking but I get the general idea that whether a persons family is light or dark skined determines if they were Spaniards or Indios is the question.

I have to agree that it doesn't mean a thing without dna or mtdna testing. My mother and her mother were blond, blued eyed and claimed to be Spaniards. In doing the genealogy records I found most were Spanish but I also have a black line and that was only 200 years ago. My mtdna came back that my first mother was Native American, Nahua in Mexico. Even the records don't always tell the truth about origin. Being listed as Spanish seems to equate with money or prestige. In my Zacatecas lineage I have 4 Caldera grandmothers all claiming Espanol when we know for a fact that Maria and Capitan Miguel Caldera had an Indio mother. The joy is in reclaiming all our heritage and the surprise's along the way.

I do hope our Spanish speaking members understand what I'm trying to say.

I agree with you Linda. I also believe it's impossible to know if the
ancestors of a certain genealogical line here in Los Altos de Jalisco were
from European descent or native Americans just by their last name. I'm not
sure if it happened in other regions but I read that when the native
Mexicans first started carrying last names here in Jalisco, that when their
children were baptized, some of them were given the last name of their
"padrino" or godfather, and that the padrino was the one who decided what
name and last name to give the newborn child.

I recently had a friend of mine of last name JIMENEZ, which is obvious a
Spanish surname, take his DNA test and his Y chromosome results came out as
native American. Either one of his ancestors adopted this last name as his
or somewhere along the way one of his great grandfather's mother had him
from an "unknown" father and gave him the last name JIMENEZ. I'm still not
that far on this research.

In my case, until about 100 years ago, I'd say that 95% of my ancestors were
European (I won't say Spanish because I'm still not sure if one my paternal
great grandfathers was from Spain or France), but I do not look like the
typical Spanish descending person from this region. Many people in the US
have asked me if I'm from the Middle East, which I have to confess that at
first I thought it was mean of them, but as I started to know my ancestors,
I don't think it's awkward at all, especially because I do look like someone
from that region. I just got my DNA results back a few weeks ago and it
turns out that I'm from the K2 haplogroup, which is Mediterranean. This
explains why I don't look like the Spanish blondes here in Los Altos, that
come from North-Western Europe.

Who knows!

I do hope our Spanish speaking members understand what I'm trying to say.

Rick, its interesting you mention "looking middle eastern". I have gotten that all my life. I visit cities like NY where there are a lot of them and they say I look like women from Dubai. I can't wait to see what my DNA says.

Hi Sandra,

Have Mexican people ever asked you "hablas español?". Everytime I get that
question my answer is "pos que no me ves el nopalote que tengo pintado en la
frente"?
They're like, ohhh, I thought you were from India or Saudi Arabia!!!!!
I guess both races have similar mixtures.

What part of Mexico are your ancestors from?

Hi Rick,

I currently live in San Antonio, Tx but all my family for about 5 generations is from Juchipila, Amoxochitl and Moyahua, Zac. Before that its like the rest of us... Jalos, Nochistlan, Ags, Lagos de Moreno, San Juan de los Lagos, San Miguel el Alto... Some connections to Spain, as well as the Moctezuma connection. This is all my mom's side though because I have not gotten past Juchipila and Moyahua on my dad's side unfortunately.

Hi,

Read your e-mail stating that your family is from Juchipila, Moyahua, etc. My grandfather now deceased, was Francisco Reynoso born in Moyahua. His father was Jose Gabino Reynoso also from Moyahua. He was born 19 Feb 1858 and was baptised at the Catholic church Santiago Apostol in Moyahua. He married Lorenza de Jesus Lopez born 10 Aug 1852, Moyahua, Zacatecas, Mexico. The following generaton is Jose Gregorio Reynoso, born 23 April 1823 in Moyahua. He married Maria Merced Ponce born 1832, Lobera, Moyahua, Zacatecas, Mexico. Next generation: Toribio Reynoso (also went by Renteria as all of our Reynoso's did including my grandfather. Toribio was born abour 1788, Moyahua and he married Maria Norberta Romero who was born about 1792 of Zacatecas, Mexico. Next generation: Silverio Reynoso born about 1771, Zacatecas, Mexico, died 14 July, 1837 in Moyahua. He married Maria Gregoria Carrillo born about 1774 of Moyahua. She died 4 Dec 1834 in Moyahua. Her
father was Jose Miguel Carrillo and her mom Maria Geronima de Luna. This is all I know. If you can help me or I you let me know. I do have children listed on these families.

Hola ,I didn't mean to but in I don't know if this will help There were two brothers Francisco and Diego Reynoso that married two sisters Josefa and Margarita Renteria.
Francisco Reynoso married Josefa Renteria in Guadalajara about 1659. Diego Reynoso married Margarita Renteria in Juchipila about 1680. My guess is Diego Reynoso and Margarita Renteria stayed in Zacatecas and this possibly where the Reynoso/Renteria started . I believe that all of the Reynosos of Zacatecas are related to the Reynosos of Jalisco and Aguascalientes and that all the Renterias in Zacatecas are related.Whats are your thoughts ?

Hello cousin Daniel, that's the problem, not everyone knows if thier surname was Spanish born or Indio with no choice especially if you are in the early stage's of researching your family. You know that we've found records in our own families where the children were all listed with different nationalities with no explanation other than for us to assume some were whiter or darker than others. It's always fun to find exciting lineages that connect to royalty but what about the work it takes trying to find and reclaim the Mulato and Indio lines! That's not easy to do when a record says son of Jose and Maria but we keep plugging away in the hopes that by some miracle we can take a line back just one more generation.

take care, Linda in Everett

Can someone help me with my inquiries?

I just could not find my grandfather's baptismal records. (Not to mention his birth certificate. It was around president Juarez's time that the church was forced to stop to register births etc) He was born (we think) in San Miguel el alto or around there. In San Miguel, I have seen the books therefore the baptismal record of one of his sisters in the church in San Miguel around 1870. But I could not find anything about my grandfather. I also searched in Jalos, San Juan, Arandas, El Valle, Cañadas. All around Los Altos. I could not find anything.

He must have been born betweeen 1860 to 1875. My father was born in 1902 also in San Miguel.

My grandfather's name was Ireneo Alvarez Zermeño. He was the son of Basilio Alvarez and Maria Ignacia Zermeño.

Thank you

Saludos,

En esos años no había actas. Había solo fe de bautizmo. De estas no mandaba copias a Guadalajara.

You speak English well. Do you live in Jalisco now?

Saludos!

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. My computer went down and I ended up having to buy a new one. Hopefully things will be ok now.
In my family the Reynoso and the Renteria name are used. Some records state Renteria and others Reynoso for the same person. Some state Reynoso 0 Renteria. My grandfather is or was known by both surnames.

Who knows!

My Spanish is lacking but I get the general idea that whether a persons
family is light or dark skined determines if they were Spaniards or Indios
is the question.

I have to agree that it doesn't mean a thing without dna or mtdna testing.
My mother and her mother were blond, blued eyed and claimed to be Spaniards.
In doing the genealogy records I found most were Spanish but I also have a
black line and that was only 200 years ago. My mtdna came back that my
first mother was Native American, Nahua in Mexico. Even the records don't
always tell the truth about origin. Being listed as Spanish seems to equate
with money or prestige. In my Zacatecas lineage I have 4 Caldera
grandmothers all claiming Espanol when we know for a fact that Maria and
Capitan Miguel Caldera had an Indio mother. The joy is in reclaiming all
our heritage and the surprise's along the way.

I do hope our Spanish speaking members understand what I'm trying to say.

Yes the Reynoso and the Renteria name is interchangeable at least by my family. From my grandfather through all of the Reynoso lines that I have both names are used. My mother used to tell me that one line is an adopted line according to her father now deceased. One of the great grandfather's, I don't know how many greats had lost his parents and was raised by another family. The person was so grateful that he took on the adopted line in honor. I don't know that I fully agree with this. I have seen the Reynoso and the Renteria names used on documents for the same person, even for my grandfather and as far back as my records go thus far.

hago llegar.

Esperanza... the Sephardic story in Mexico makes from some great socio cultural analysis. Just like your Torah story... Monterrey is filled with many Crypto-Jewish traditions that have faded into the Mainstream Mexican cultural fold... things like Cabrito, Flour Tortillas, and the various Sweets are without a doubt foods of Middle Eastern origin that filtered to modern Mexican culture.

Hola Primo ,I do not dismiss the fact ,that there are or were Sephadic influences in Mexico. In the northern part if Mexico is more arid and wheat requires less water than corn, smaller animals such as sheep or goats need less land and food to survive . I believe these factors relate to such examples you mentioned. These are my opinions and guesses.

Primo... you bring up some great points... but you still have to wonder why tribes like the Seri, Pima, Yaqui & Tarahumara who live in very arid Northern regions still rely on corn as their primary grain... and often raise pigs quite successfully. But I do agree that there are many communities in the North that have adapted Wheat & Goats for economic reasons independent (or at least indirectly influenced) of Sephardic traditions.

Jewish History

My gg-grandfather Ismael Martin del Campo and his siblings were born in
Lagos de Moreno. I found a website that was in Spanish about Lagos, but the
English translation made it read pretty funny. From what I could make out,

Corrine there is no doubt there is heavy anecdotal evidence to the existence of Sephardic Jews throughout Mexico (most notably in Nuevo Leon of course).

But even in the Jalisco Highlands we can see the physical traits common in the Middle East among many people.... including some of my relatives (unibrow, lots of body hair, long thin noses, pale skin etc.,)... however, this archetype is not unknown among the Celtiberian & Basque populations of Pre-Islam Spain so its not definitive in any way. I have also heard many personal stories (including one involving a maternal great grandmother) of strange traditions such as:

> A different style of veil
> The preparation of unusual flat breads
> Speaking a foreign language
> Practicing unusual mystic traditions

Of course that isn't definitive either because we also know that Jalisco is home to a significant number of people of Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi & Armenian Catholic / Orthodox ancestry who began imigrating in the late 19th Century to escape violence in the Ottoman empire.

More crudely, my relatives & friends from the joke about Male endowment and joking accuse the other of being afflicted by the "Jewish Curse"

But more seriously, I would suggest participating in the National Geographic's Genome study to determine if you have uniquely Jewish mitochondrial DNA etc.,

Comment

Hi, Juan"

How do you participate in this National Geographic Genome study? I suppose I could look that up on the internet. I have been very curious about my origins from both sides of my family. I am one of those people whom you see that can fit in many places. I look Native American to Native Americans, Italian to Italians, Middle Eastern to Middle Easterners, etc. The one thing I have never been asked is, "Are you Hispanic?" Mostly I am asked, "Are you Native American?" Anyways, I am interested in finding out just what I am from the perspective of my genes. My father was of German ancestry, with some English, French, Scottish, and Irish. It is on my mother's side which I am doing this research and looking into a possible Jewish ancestry.

As I mentioned in another posting, there is a wonderful film put out by the National Geographic Society on the rise of Islam and it covers the expansion of it into Spain. Beautiful story narrated by Ben Kingsley. I am also wondering about whether or not I have any Muslim ethnicity.

It is something that just fascinates me.

Corrine,
I am currently reading a book by Victor Perera, The Cross & the Pear Tree, A Sephardic Journey. He uses his family as an example of what happened to the Sephardim after they were expelled from Spain. It is an easy to read story covering the history of Jews in Spain.
There is also a web site - sephardim.com - which gives family names, crests and locations of Jewish surnames from Spain. I have found several family surnames on this site. Like you, I am just beginning to explore the Sephardic connection.
Hope this helps.

Lucy:

Thanks for the name of the book. I have yet to get back far enough in my research to prove (or disprove) any Jewish ethnicity, but I did look at the sephardim.com site you mention and found the name Martin and Muniz on it, as being of Jewish origin. Muniz is one of the surnames I am researching and, of course, Martin del Campo, my main surname of research, is sometimes given as just Martin. But, this interests me greatly regardless of any blood connection.

I also saw a beautiful video recently, which I got from the library, a National Geographic film I think was called something like the rise of Islam. Ben Kingsley narrates it and it is such a lovely account of the spread of Islam. It tells of its expansion centuries ago, which, of course, tells of its spread to Spain and shows all the beautiful architecture there which originated with the Muslims. It is a video well worth the time to watch.

I too have a Jewish ancestor her name was Inés Esteves she had 5 illegitimate children with João I of Portugal. I come from Princess Estefanía. I was also curious about my Jewish connection because their family was expelled to Portugal. Her grandfather was supposed to descend from Charlamagne according to Worldroots.com but have not searched anything yet. How did Jewish people arrive in Spain? Thanks.

Hi, Bill:

I finally found the source for the "funny" translation regarding the history of Lagos de Moreno and its Sephardic history. I got it from the online encyclopedia, called "Wikipedia." It starts out reading: "Lagos de Moreno is the City Capitol for the Great Sephardiya Nation or Lagos Kingdom..." etc. Now, I cannot remember if it was a translation, or not, but this is the source for my initial information on Sephardic Jewish history in Lagos.

Estatutos de Limpieza de Sangre

Source:http://groups.google.com.mx/group/Genealogia-Mexico/msg/8f81d8d5d856e15…;

Pablo A. Chami

No responden a

I Sentencia Estatuto de Toledo, 1449.

a) Procedimientos

poseyeran y eran considerados inferiores.

preparación o estudio ("low skill or entry jobs"). Eso muchas veces puede
crear fricciones entre grupos étnicos diferentes. A ver tú que opinas.

Hi Bill,

I don't buy the argument that Blacks & Mexican immigrants are struggling over the same jobs.

If you look at the Black demographics... those who are regularly employed tend to have Lower Middle Class jobs (Post Office, Municipal beauracrats, Bus Drivers etc.,)... these are jobs that usually pay > $30k plus Benefits & Pension and which require English skills & legal residency. The Mexicans that compete those jobs are generally 2nd or 3rd generation... by which time they have moved away from Inner City neighborhoods to Suburbs... and so are competing against low skilled Whites more so than Blacks who seem to be a bit more confined to Historic Black neighborhoods.

The other side of the Black demographic... are those that don't have regular employement... we are speaking of broken homes, welfare households, drug dealers, thiefs etc.,this group is most definitely confined to the "Black Ghetto" and not really out competing for jobs at the Sweat Shops & Restaurants.

However, I will concede that part of the pressure is that as Mexican immigrants who have been here a couple of decades succeed economically, the traditional Mexican neighborhoods begin experiencing a sort of gentrification that prices out new immigrants whom in torn are increasingly living in inexpensive, historically black neighborhoods... and as such the Blacks are bound to feel invaded and this is going to cause friction.

But I think the friction is exacerbated by the Anti-Negro attitudes brought by some immigrant groups from Mexico. Come on lets not be hipocrites... we all know what our less progressive relatives think of Blacks... to see how this would poison everyday interactions between the two groups. I am in no way absolving Black responsiblity either... they do see Mexicans as competitors in many levels... gang & drug acitivities not being a small part of it.

Hello Corrine -
If you go to the Sephardim.com site at this link http://www.sephardim.com/
you will find lots of information on Sephardic Jews of Spain, New Mexico and other areas in Latin America.
Also you will find surname history, a forum with lots of people who are researching their Sephardic ancestry or are just discovering that they have a Sephardic heritage.
Good luck,
Yolanda

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Jewish History

My gg-grandfather Ismael Martin del Campo and his siblings were born in
Lagos de Moreno. I found a website that was in Spanish about Lagos,
but the
English translation made it read pretty funny. From what I could make
out,
it was telling about the Jewish history of Lagos de Moreno. I am very
interested in this as it pertains to my ancestral research and my
desire to
know of my ethnic origins.

>From what I have gathered from this translation, when the Jews were
being
driven out of Spain during Queen Isabella's reign, they were given
the choice to go to New Spain. So, 50 or 60 families of Sephardic Jews
came
to New Spain and established Lagos de Moreno as their colony.
Apparently,
the word "Sephardic" is the Hebrew word for "Spain." So Sephardic Jews
are
Spanish Jews.

Anyways, at this point in my research, it seems I am getting beyond
what my
mother's family knew and am beginning to head into new territory. So,
my
efforts are hit and miss. But, it doesn't discourage me, but instead
makes
it seem more like an exploration.

Does anyone know of a website or book I could look for that would have
more
on this history? In doing my research, the history of the areas
interests
me as much as the family search does.

During the reign of Isabella and Ferdinand, non christians and moslems were expulsed from Spain. THe choice was to leave everything of value and leave the country or convert. Non compliance and staying in spain as a practicing jew meant death.

Also, everyone going to the new world had to be a baptized christian. Non christians were not allowed to go to the new world. Only jews who had already convereted were allowed to go to the new world.
True some jews were crypto jews- practicing judiasm in secret.

Cecil Roth is on of the most knowledgable person's in the history you seek and the public library should have his books and if you just punch in Sephardic jews on the catalogue source it will tell you what books and such your library system has on the subject.

Jewish Influences in the Jalisco Highlands

Corrine,

Many of my family members have done dna testing. The Mexican is a mixed lot. Many of my Villarreal cousins have tested and the testing indicates and traditions suggest a jewish heritage. Then there is my mother's maternal grandfther who's gene's were tested cpurtesy of my mother's maternal cousin revealed that my great grandfather's line was celtic. Then there are my Arriola cousin's tests that reaveal them to be Trevino Velasco and that is my maternal grandfather's line that show's them to be semitic but I not sure if they were jews. Then there is my father's line the Arredondos, care of my brother. His test also revealed a semetic heritage which I believe might be Greek. My brother also did a mitochrondial test to reveal an indian heritage.

Thanks Esther... the interesting thing about your relatives DNA results is how much they match the predicted results based on Surname.

Villareal & Trevino are both among THE most Sephardic names in Mexico... particularly those clans of known Sephardic settlements such as Monterrey.

With regards to other ancestry... Celtic & Greek are both maternal roots of Spanish ancestry.

Just like Esther I had as many male lines in my family do the dna and I did the mtdna. My mtdna came back, Native American, specifically Nahua in Mexico. My fathers line, Castanon, came back R1b, West European and that was not a surprise. My mothers paternal line, Gutierrez, came back Haplogroup N. This group is found occacionally in Mexico but for the most part is in Finland, Siberia and Russia. I even had a perfect match with someone who knows they came from Finland. She contacted me and wanted to know how and when we got to Mexico! I told her I could only track them back to 1650 so it was before that.. She said her fathers family came to the states from Finland in 1850. Sometimes the dna brings up more questions than answers and I've learned we can't really be surprised with the diversity of our ancestors who had adventerous spirits and were not afraid to travel, whatever the reason we will never know but I'm for one, certainly grateful for the journey they have
put me on!

With regards to Haplop Group N... where does your Gutierrez lineage come from? If its Northwestern Mexico... I might think Siberian or Russian sailors hunting for furs... perhaps some genetic admixture that ahem... doesn't follow the official Family Tree.

More intriguingly... perhaps some Viking genes vis-a-vis the speculated voyages from Scandanavia to MesoAmerica centuries prior to Columbus???

Comment

Hi Juan, I can trace my Gutierrez line to Chilchota Michoacan in 1625 or so. They went to Jalisco by 1780. Some records say Mestiso and others Espanol for their children.

Gary Felix said there is a Haplogroup subclass N3 found in Sevilla Spain. The thought is they might have been Indio and from the party with the Cortes/Moctezuma line. In the Gary Felix study there are 2 other N DNA but not a match to mine.. I was also told that the Chinese were in Mexico long before the Spanish and the evidence is the Chinese anchors found offshore in Mexico. And then again I'm sure there were many sailers we never heard of who's ships grounded in Mexico giving us genes we can't explain. Within a generation or two of intermarriage with the local band we became native to Mexico. It's all conjecture but sure fun to think about.

Hi Juan,

I am very interested in your statement. Do you have any resources that you recommend? I have Treviño ancestors in Matamoros. Does anyone have any info from that area of Mexico?

Hi Jan!

I also have Trevino ancestors in Matamoros! Before that they were all
in the Monterrey area. Since this group is for Zacatecas,
Aguascalientes and Jalisco you can e-mail me personally and we can see
if we are related........I would love to compare yours with mine!

Hi, Erlinda,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
Your letter to the members was very interesting to me. My dtr. really wants to know whether she/me, I guess has native links. I have talked to several people on the dna issue and some where not very encouraging, saying that I might not get what I am looking for, but just be lumped into some groups, etc.

You state a specific group in Mexico, and that's exactly what I would want to get out of it.
Did you use an on-line dna service? And how did you contact with this person from Finland.
That's interesting! The information you got out of your dna is exactly what I would like to see out of mine/ours.

I would appreciate any information you can give me.
Thanks a million!

Conference in Coahuila

Dear Ranchos members,

Sorry it's taken so long to write and share my experiences with all of you regarding the 3er Conferencia Bi-Niacional Genealogica de Coahuila.

It was an amazing event, much more than I expected. First of all Maria Cortez and I met up with 3 members of Nuestros Ranchos, Mickey Garcia, Josie Treviño and Wellester Alvarado. That was number one on my list, not only because they are Ranchos members and I felt as if I'd already known them but because they were so kind and gracious, taking us under their wing, introducing us to almost everyone as they knew almost everyone.

Wow Alicia sounds like the conference was pretty busy and lots and lots
of fun. What a great experience it was for you all. Wish I could have
been there. Thanks for telling us about it.

Miguel said that there might be a chance to get audio of the conference
so it can be used as a podcast. Was there any discussion of that topic?
Maybe I should email him and ask again.

Can you please post the dates and locations of the Northern California group
meetings on the list? It would be great to know at least a month in
advance.

Thank you, and thank you for a good report on the conference.

Hola Alicia de San Jose ,how are you ? I hope well. My name is Ronnie Reynoso from Claremont,Ca.my people are from Los Altos de Jalisco . I was wondering why did the people of Los Altos intermarry so much.? What was the opinion or theory of the speakers at the conference ? my friend 's people are from Zacatecas (El Durazno) and they too intermarried alot ,would they follow under the same opinion of the speakers ? On my maternal grandfather side which has very strong Indian influence, are also related to everybody else . I'm curious.
thank you for your time

Emilie,

It is always great to meet one of our ranchos members and it was wonderful of Helyn to host a dinner in your honor and it was a pleasure to meet you and your husband.

How have you been? How's the weather up in Washington State at this time of the year? Are you still getting lots of rain. It is beautiful here in the high 60's and clear.

We plan on meeting here locally to discuss how to move forward with our Northern California group. We plan on meeting April 12 and I've invited Helyn and Rich and Kitty. Because of the Easter holiday I haven't heard from them yet. We really got some inspiration from the Coahuila/Texas groups who showed us what could be done collectively.

Hope you two are well and thanks for the note........Alicia

Alicia,

Thanks for the report on the conference. Have a nice Easter. Regards to your husband. It was great meeting you both last year.

Josie, Mickey and Wellester..........muchas gracias!!

Because of Josie and Mickey's connections we were able to visit with the Director of the Archivo General del Estado de Coahuila, Miguel Angel Muñoz, Borrego on Friday afternoon at the Archivo General. What warm and gracious people.

We also had the opportunity to meet Benicio Samuel of the group, Genealogia del Norte de Mexico.

The speakers were all impressive but being from Zacatecas I was especially interested in Dr Jose Enciso Contreras' presentation, and I was not disappointed.
Two of the presenters were from Dallas Tx, the Cuellar brothers gave their presentation dealing primarily with family research how to do it and the dedication and perseverance it takes for anyone who undertakes this daunting, lifelong journey.
Maestra Marta Duron's presentation was focused on the families originating from Los Altos de Jalisco and her studies and theories as to why so many families from Los Altos inter-married with each other. She used Jalostitlan as her primary area of focus radiating from there to other towns and cities of Los Altos.

All in all it was an uplifting, eye-opening and inspiring conference. Maria and I came away with many new ideas which we hope to bring to our Northern California Group. We have invited Josie and Mickey to come to Northern California to do a presentation for our group and we hope they will accept our invitation.

We were even bolder in that we had dinner with Dr Jose Enciso Contreras and his wife and extended an invitation to them as well and he indicated he would be willing to come and to speak to our group. The Cuellar brothers from Dallas Texas also said they would be willing to come. All in all it was a wonderful experience.

I hope I didn't put foot in mouth by suggesting this but I think all we can do is move forward, not backwards and this would be a big move forward.

Well I'd better get off my box, just thought I would share the highlights of our trip...everything was a highlight, there were no low lights. :)

Saludos a todos.

Here is a link to a newspaper story from Coahuila re the Conference. Not too much detail, since it was a three day conference and several presentations and they couldn't cover everything in detail. Each person attending will have their own stories to tell.

Zacatecans in Durango

I came across 2 Zacatecan families last night when searching civil birth records in Panuco de Coronado, Durango, while doing some research on my paternal grandmother's line. I noted them just in case they are of value to anyone in the group.

Dear Raquel,

Two weeks ago Maria Cortez and I attended a Genealogical conference in Coahuila, Saltillo Mexico. It was said to be in Ramos Arizpe but was actually in Saltillo.
There was a professor with a doctorate in history from Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas, his name is Doctor Jose Enciso Contreras. He stated that most everyone from the northern states of Mexico such as Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila and Nuevo Leon can be traced back to Zacatecas. For one, Nochistlan was the first Guadalajara which is where the early Spanish colonizers first settled, secondly because of the mines in Zacatecas, Zacatecas because of the mines became the magnet for many of the early colonizers and from there they migrated north even into the United States such as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

Maria and I have much to share with all of Nuestros Ranchos, regarding our fantastic trip to Coahuila. Maybe I will have time to do that this weekend.

One of the pluses to our trip was meeting up with 3 other members of Ranchos, Mickey Garcia, Josie Treviño and Wellester Alvarado. They were all so gracious and welcoming. I will tell you more about them this weekend.

Felices Pascuas..........Happy Easter!!

Maternal abuelos were Julian Sauzedo, 40, and Maria Lecaria Sauzedo, 38. Parents and grandparents all from Zacatecas.

Just wanted to let anyone who is researching in Jerez Zacatecas Mexico that I am working on Baptisms 1836 to 1840 #0439851. If anyone needs a look up please let me know. I'd be happy to check for you. I'm finding it to be a very important film for his area of research since the years from 1841 to 1866 are missing. Linda,

Great! I have been looking for years for my paternal grandmother, Gorgonia Garcia, birthdate unknown. Her parents were Ignacio Garcia and Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez.

Gorgonia married my grandfather Francisco Olague Felix, date unknown. She had my father Guadalupe Olague in Jerez in January 1903. I have never found anything on my father, or his sister Soledad (b. 1898?) or their mother Gorgonia.

Thanks,

Hi

I was wondering if anyone had the family name Bernal or Cano in their family
history. I have had a difficult finding any trace of them in border
crossings. It is like they just landed from the stars.
