"Hola Lupita.

Bill Figueroa"

On the Marentes Otaduy y Avendaño clan: A marriage information record in
Aguascalientes on 26 Nov 1708 informs they were from Cuta, “de los Reinos de
Castilla.” The bride to be, Isabel de Otaduy y Avendaño, was the daughter of
Cueva. The last couple was the maternal grandparents of Captain Roque
Marentes Otaduí y Avendaño.

The latter’s spouse, Rosa María de Huerta y Flores was christened in
Aguascalientes 16 Sep 1685, española, age 18 days, a legitimate daughter of
Captain Jerónimo de Huerta y Escalante and Juana Valdés Flores (She appears
as Juana de Rentería y Flores in another daughter’s christening in 1688).

Jerónimo was the son of Captain Juan de Huerta and María de Quijas y
Escalante. Juan was buried in Aguascalientes 1 Feb 1666. He had made his
will in Mexico City, before the “escribano real,” Joseph de Haro.

Hola Efrain ,I use familytree maker. I am basically a computer illiterate. I really just wing it,for example the PAF from Family Search org ,I don't know what it is or how to use it. I always have to ask someone in my family or friends how to work or the understandings of the computer. Here is a good example of my frustration,I tried myself and also the help of wife to put in the Adobe program so I could read some my e-mail.I couldn't nor could my wife, so now I have to find some one who could help me. I keep on saying I'm going to take a computer class and havenot done it yet. As for Sebastian Ramirez de Mendoza ,he is also my ancestor.

Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza

I don't think this ISabel and Isabel Velasco de Mendoza are the same person. Because The velasco one was married to Luis Carillo. Isabel Velasco would have been born ca. 1565, our Isabel should have been born ca.

Well, this is definitely good to know. I didn't know all of this before,
the origins of these two names, San Juan de los Lagos and Lagos de Moreno.
So, that means, my ancestors are definitely from Lagos de Moreno, before

Which Lagos?

Sometimes, in my research, when it says where a person is from, it will just
say "Lagos." Do they mean San Juan de los Lagos, or Lagos de Moreno? I am
trying to figure out which direction to head for my ancestral research and

Lagos de Moreno, definetely.
When it comes to San Juande los Lagos, its always shown as San Juan (without de los Lagos most of times) even when belonged to the villa of jalostotitlán.
San Juan Bautista Mezquititlán was the first name of the village and it was changed to "de los Lagos" because it belonged to the Canton de Lagos.

Im pretty sure the priest meant Lagos de Moreno. In my reasearch they ususally put S. Juan or Sn. Juan de los Lagos. "Lagos" by itself is a nickname for Lagos de Moreno. Just like people from San Juan de los Lagos will call it San Juan to shorten it.

Saludos.

Hi Alicia!

Mickey Garcia and I are going.......we went last year and it was very
rewarding! Marta Duron is an expert on Aguascalientes and the
cronista from Zacacatecas will be a speaker also.........and, of
course Monterrey is only a few miles away.......more research can be
done there! A lot of Nuestros Ranchos members are from the
area.......we would love to meet up with you and anyone else
considering attending......just like we did when we planned the Salt
Lake City conference, remember? -) Give it some thought, ok?

Josie,

My husband has in his ancestry several Duron from Aguascalientes. Could you ask Marta Duron for her e-mail and address and if she can do look-ups or has family trees, etc? My husband's paternal grandmother was also born in the city of Zacatecas and it would be great to get the cronista's contact information also. I envy your trip. Wish I could go. (Hubby refuses to set foot in MX after our experiences in DF in 1968.)

Thanks,

Hi Emilie!

Marta Duron does not do e-mail or computers..........she is an
amazing woman.......can recall info on families from the top of her
head! Perhaps you can put something down in writing and send it to
me......I will be glad to give it to her. We still have about three
or four weeks before the conference so you could send it to me
privately (josiett3@juno.com) and I will give it to her personally.
I plan to get the cronista's contact info as well since I have my
very elusive Liendo ancestors in Zacateca......they have been hiding
from me for years.......maybe he can help me find them! :-)

Let me assure you that Ramos Arispe, Saltillo and Monterrey are
NOTHING like the DF.......although these cities have grown
tremendously they are still wonderful places to visit and there is so
much history there! I do not hesitate to go there whenever I can and
this conference is a great opportunity to do so.
I do not go to the DF myself.......it is just too big ........ I
enjoy the smaller places where you can enjoy the people, visit the
archivos, the churches and everything we enjoy doing. Mickey and I
always wind up in some cronista's archivos....sometimes even without
trying!! :-) Last year we ended up in a dusty attic full of dusty
documents and I saw one that was about one of my direct ancestors!
It had his signature among other things......I snapped picture after
picture with my digital camera and felt like I had gone to
heaven!! :-) You just never know what you are going to find on
these trips!

Hopefully something will develop and you may end up sitting next to
me at the conference! :-)

Hello

Saltillo has a small airport. I do not know who has flights maybe
Continental? Of course Monterrey has a large airport. Ramos is an hour or less away
form Monterrey.

Josie and I have been to the other conferences and they are great.

Hi Mickey!

I am not in Houston and did not know you were online!! :-)
Perhaps you can enlighten them more than I can......I think also it
might be cheaper for someone out of state (TX) to fly to SA or
Houston (for example) and then take a Mexican airline directly to
Ramos, Saltillo or Monterrey.....what do you think?

Hi,

I am thinking of going if my husband can get the time off. Is it better by air to Ramos Arispe or travel by car from Monterrey airport?

Thanks,

Hi Esther!

I have not flown into Ramos but I would imagine it would be best to
fly directly there. As far as travel by car from Monterrey airport I
usually take the bus from Monterrey to Saltillo and leave the driving
to them....:-) Sorry I am not much help but perhaps someone from
the area might have a better answer......glad to hear you are
considering going!!!

Alicia, I have flown into Monterrey but it has been quite a
while.....a few years......I usually take the bus from San Antonio
and it goes straight to Monterrey or Saltillo.........or sometimes we
drive. Give me a couple of days and I can find out for you. Right
now I am not at home and do not have access to the info I use when I
travel to Mexico. I don't remember where you live......how much time
do you have to travel.....you can e-mail me personally and we can
toss this around if you like! :-)

Dear Sophia--

I find it very interesting to hear that you live in
Ottawa. I was born in British Columbia but left there
at the age of two and a half. All my paternal family
history, from the 1830's, is in Ontario, Canada. It
is my husband's side of the family that comes from
Jalisco, Michoacan, and Zacatecas. Do you have any
lines in Ontario? If you do, I can give you some good
websites that will assist in your research.

I am planning a trip to Santa Rita, Jalisco, at Easter
time. That small village is in the Ayotlan cabacera
which used to be called Ayo el Chico. We will be
seeing some of the relatives and will probably make
stops in the neighboring towns and villages of
Atotonilco el Alto and La Barca.

Sincerely,
Patricia Diane Godinez

The reason why I was asking, is that I have been asked, to go to the
conference to man one of the vendor booths. And I am hoping to possibly see
some the ranchos members, while I'm there.

Please try to find as much information as you can about the descendents of Moctezuma, specially Petronila de Moctezuma and Martin Navarro, her husband. There are quite a few of us in the group who are interested in her ancestry.

Thank you.

Hola Joseph, its not your fault, but misinformation.North American is considered Canada , United States and Mexico.Indios de Mexico traveled in and out of present day United States . The media gives 100 % representatuion to the Indians of Canada but not to the Indians of Mexico. I find it wierd and prejuiced.

Thank you Joseph,

When I had my mtdna done it came back Native American, in Mexico it was Nahua but they included the other tribes in all the Americas who share my gene pool. Since I'm group A that includes Eleut, Haida, Salish, Zuni, Navajo, Lakota and some others. I enjoy seeing photo's and drawings documenting the people and appreciate you taking the time to share these.

Erlinda,

Was you mtdna tested in Mexico ?

My husband had his yDNA tested by the FamilyTreeDNA Labs in the USA. The results of his 67 marker test placed him the haplogroup of Q3 Native American, and the SNP M3+ ... We have no idea which tribe his deep ancestral roots came from, any suggestion on how to proceed ?

His mtDNA has not been tested.

Dear Sandra--

The majority of my Mexican research has been done in
the Atotonilco el Alto area. I checked my records and
did not have the names you mentioned. I do have many
of the Microfilms of Atotonilco el Alto on Indefinite
Loan at the Bonita Family History Center. I will see
what I can find out for you when I go next Wednesday.

Aguascalientes 1930 Mexico Census

FamilySearch (Genealogical Society of Utah) microfilmed the 1930 Mexico Natl. Census in the Mexico Natl. Archives back in the 1960s. They filmed everything that the archives had, which unfortunately wasn't everything. As for Aguascalientes the municipios: Aguascalientes, Calvillo, and Jesus Maria were 'lost' at the time of the microfilming. FamilySearch has not gone back to the Natl. archives to determine if the 'lost' municipios were ever found. You may want to inquire with them to see.

Aguas, Aguas

AliceBB,

The reason why you do not see the 1930 Census for Aguas is because the census has not been scanned yet. If I remember correctly, I think that is presumed to be lost.

Dear Campezina, Thank you so much for this information. It's what I was beginning to suspect, but couldn't confirm without the help of other members. I must also be the only one researching Aguas, Aguas that has ever tried accessing the Aguas, Aguas 1930 census, since no one had noticed the capital city missing from the listing! Thanks again, Alice BB

Accurate Documentation

To all the intrepid researchers at Nuestros Ranchos:

In searching through microfilm records, as I copy down the entries I find on
my ancestors and "might be related" persons, I strive to make these records

Hi Corrine/Corinne
Good question with as many answers as there are people keeping records. As for myself I had to standardize a surname but always include the original resource record so others can see there was a different spelling. Like you I use Rootsweb.com because you can get a pedrigree chart there with easy access and an index so others can check for other spellings. I know there must be errors since I have many surnames like Luera/Loera, Morillo/Murillo, Viramontes/Miramontes, Zuniga/Sungia, Zepeda/Sepeda, and as for S and Z being interchangeable I went with whatever that family seemed to be using in the later 1800's since things were very different in the 1500, 1600 and 1700's since few could read and write and scribes did what they thought was best. Also, the matter of people using surnames of their grandparents or mothers making them even harder to find.
We can never satisfy everyone else so we need to do what works best for us to make the records readable, traceable and easy to share. People can always contact us directly if they have questions or can make a correction.

Just my two cents worth, Linda in Everett

as accurate as possible. However, as has been discussed in this forum in
the past, spelling of names, illegible penmanship, phonetic spelling, etc.
can make accuracy sometimes a hit and miss guessing game. Which could
result in inaccurate documentation. It is so tempting to just figure, based
on other entries, that one person in one entry is the same as another person
in another entry. For example, sometimes they spell a surname "Vanda,"
sometimes "Banda." Should I record it the way they spell it in each of the
entries, or should I "correct" them by standardizing the name myself, by
documenting what I think they meant everytime?

I realize I could get myself into a sticky situation. One reason is, that
"Vanda" could be a name different from "Banda" and the persons in each
entry, therefore, different people, no matter how similar everyone else in
these entries appear. My mistake would be to assume Jose Vanda married to
Maria Sanchez and Jose Banda married to Maria Sanches are the same people.
Some people, even today, spell their surnames ending in "s" or "z", as in
Gonzalez and Chavez. In one entry a Gregorio Peres, married to a Maria
Chavez, then becomes Gregorio Perez and Maria Chaves in another entry!
Changing it in my documentation, to all end in "z" or "s", could mean
recording it incorrectly for how they might have spelled their own names!
As you can see, and I'm sure many of you have discovered, this is one of the
challenges of reading handwritten records.

Some names are so illegible, I write down the name the best I can and place
a question mark after it. For example, "Peisnlar?" In other entries, all
the names are the same as in this one, but the person's last name is very
clearly "Pinuelas." Should I change "Peisnlar" to "Pinuelas," because I
think that's probably what was written, however illegible? Or, should I not
take any chances by guessing what it probably says in the record? I look
over how the recordkeeper wrote their letters, to aid in my reading their
penmanship, but sometimes there is just one name that stumps me and I put a
question mark after it, to let myself know that I gave up.

What do you do to make your records as accurate as possible? How do you
pass this information on to others, even download databases of your records
onto forums, make your records available to family, etc., when there are
these questionable areas? I know how frustrating it is to try and find an
ancestor in a database, such as Ancestry.com, only to discover after long
searching hours and days, and weeks, and years, that the name was completely
massacred and nowhere resembles the true name of that person. When I look
for "Frias," I also look for "Freas," and "Frillas," etc. But, what if it
is entered as "Frian," or "Fias," or something like that? Will I ever find
it?

I guess we can only do what is humanly possible. No one is perfect and we
can not expect that. We can only be thankful and quite grateful that we
have information being shared in the first place and at such a huge volume,
all around the world. Which brings me to the reason for my dismay. I have
decided to download all my records onto rootsweb and find many of my
carefully kept records are dotted with question marks and notes in
parenthesis. I want to share this information, but I want to provide it as
accurately as I can.

Thank-you, all, for your help and words of wisdom!

For what it is worth: I use 20th century standard Spanish spelling in the part of the data base which generates an alpha list. I use the documents' actual spelling in the part of my records which contains the details. This second section also contains my own code, as you have, of symbols to show uncertainty, lack of verification, etc.

Corinne,
(think I got that right! :-) )

I have struggled with this myself and don't really know a good answer, so I just keep doing what I'm doing...just hoping it's the right thing.

After extracting hundreds of names from the parish records of Aguas., I can say two things. First, even when names are spelled identically and consistently, I've barked up the wrong tree..and second, I'm just hoping to make it a little easier for whoever comes after me. :-)

I will say that I have kept true to the records and copied the record exactly - including the misspellings, omissions, additions, etc. that are in the actual record. When I have enough energy I make notes in margins, etc. to show what I believe was intended. I think it's very important to copy these 'mistakes' because it leaves a sort of paper trail, if you will, of how some branches of a surname came about. If we 'fix' everything to the most commonly acceptable spelling today, we can lose sight of what branch we come from. Also, all these newly discovered variants help other genealogists when they come across similar misspellings.

I, too, sometimes get stumped by that ONE word that I can't decipher even after making a pretty thorough study of the scribe's handwriting. I list my suppositions on a sticky note and move on. I've actually gone back to some of them and 'discovered' what a particular word was later, after seeing it written legibly (or more appropriately spelled) in another entry.

My real frustration is that the software cannot keep those variant spellings or changes in order of surnames. If I type in the name of a child, it automatically gives me a surname. However, that child may or may not have taken the exact surname as the parent. If you try to change the name/spelling, it will conclude that the new name is a different person, since it can only show one name for a person. Of course, I write these variations in each individual's notes, but it takes a while, and those don't usually show in a list/tree.

Even more importantly, these don't transfer into a database! When possible I've sent out trees, outline trees, etc. with my complete notes. Just in case someone really needs that. It makes for a longer document, but for true researchers those notes can be invaluable.

Well, I don't believe I've added anything of real value, but this note may serve at least to let you know that I believe most of us are in the same boat. Perhaps one day we, as researchers, can work toward unifying a tree/data sheet format which might include a place for a variant spelling (for example, a blank where we could list the original spelling if different from the common/modern one). Or it may be possible to push software developers to create an option where we might be able to 'flag' a name in our database with a variant original spelling, with odd circumstances, etc.

Just a few thoughts from way out west in TX...

Many of you probably know this, but it is worth repeating. Ancestry.com has
tackled this problem by allowing you to record "alternate" information for
things such as name, dates of birth, death, and locations. In searches,
alternate names appear along with the "preferred" name, so that variants and
misspellings are not lost to future genealogists. It also allows you to
spell the ancestor's name differently from that of the parent or child, if
there has truly been such a name change, without breaking the continuity of
the family tree. On both sides of my family, variants occur regularly:
Romo/Romo de Vivar/Romo de Bivar, and Wolfe/Wolf. If I think the spelling
is an error, I try to use the name as spelled most often in records of the
historical period, and I enter the variant as an "alternate."

I have not used any other genealogy software, but I imagine ancestry.com is
not the only one that has figured this out.

Karr:

Thank-you for telling me about that. I added a category for "Notes," but I hesitated adding one for variations of spellings for names, because I don't know how the information shows up, from the database to the search engine. I don't know how all that works, but your comments certainly help in showing me that this issue can be accomodated.
