End of year progress report

Sounds like a report card, doesn't it.
I can't believe that it is the 2nd of December - already ... where has the time gone??

Well - this is a kind of report card on what I managed to get done in genealogy research. At the beginning of the year I set some goals for my Zacatecas research. I read many films, but the truth is that I didn't find all the information I had set as my goal. Anyway - here is a listing of the films I went through - most did not have indices, which means having to have read them page by page (zzzzz - my eyes got mighty heavy): (NOTE - all are films of Zacatecas)

Natalie,

You deserve to be congratulated.......any progress whether major or minor deserves to be acknowledged and recoginized, even when it appears that we don't make any progress and we don't have any significant findings it's still progress. Progress because the process of elimination is also telling, it speaks of where people have not been and tells us to keep looking and look elsewhere etc, etc.

One day I will be able to get back to doing research, don't know when but it's always with me, when it's time I know my ancestors will call me back.

Good luck and good work,

Mexican Census

I hope somebody can answer this for me. I remember that, a long time ago, on the Yahoo Ranchos group, I downloaded a file that had the results of the INEGI Mexican census for the states of Aguascalientes, Jalisco, and Zacatecas. Later on, I think it was on Jonathan Walker's cd, I saw the complete review for all the states. It included the reported population on every single municipio and every single city, town and rancho in the whole country. Does anybody know where can I find this file? It was in Adobe format.

For those of you who belong to the Mexican FHR Yahoo Group, I have uploaded the Census files for the states of Aguascalientes, Jalisco, and Zacatecas. They are in the file section unnder 2000 Mexican Census. For those of you who do not belong to the group, here the link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mexicanfhr/ .

For those who would like to still get a copy of my CD, with the rest of Mexico and the many other research tools on it (such the Parisht and Vital Records list for Mexico) contact me at mexicanfhr@gmail.com

The pdf files for the 2000 Mexican census, did come from my Resource CD. Those that would like a copy, can contact me off the list (at mexicanfhr@gmail.com) to make arrangements to get one.

Also, the files for Aguascalientes, Jalisco and Zacatecas, were in the file section on the yahoo Ranchos group.

And the Family History Library does have copies of the same report, for the 1960 and the 1990 census.

Just a note of clarification in case some are not understanding. The pdf
that Steven and Jonathan are referring to only includes information on
the towns and NOT the names of individuals in those towns.

Jonathan has been very gracious and helping to the group, just ask
anyone from the group that has travelled to SLC and met him. He has also
put a lot of work into this great resource. It would be a very very nice
gesture for the receiving parties to offer to compensate him for his
effort in assembling the information on the CD.

Gaps in Ancestry.com Death records

I receive a newsletter weekly from Pat Gooldy of Ye Olde Genealogy Shoppe. The following is an excerpt from her latest newsletter that I thought I should share with the group.

Emilie

I belong to an online newsletter called "Librarians Serving Genealogists", which comes out daily with interesting information and inquiries. It is a free newsletter and, although anyone can join it, it is aimed mostly at genealogical librarians. The general public will find the information of limited use. They do not answer research questions from the general public. Recent inquiries and answers concern how to give a lecture on the services offered by (and differences) between Ancestry.Com and ProQuest, what services and materials area are needed when setting up a new genealogy library, how to interact more with the public etc.

Joseph,

Thanks for the link to the Latin American Pamphlet Collection. I found an
Nicaragua" written in 1845 by my fellow countryman Alejandro Marure, a well
known historian from Guatemala. I downloaded the entire document which I
plan to read as soon as I get some free time. As you probably know, the
project to build a canal through Nicaragua preceded the Panama Canal, which
was completed in 1914. Although never pursued due to seismic faults and
volcanic activity, the crossing of the isthmus through Nicaragua was used
during the gold rush (1848-1856) when thousands of Americans sailed from New
York, Philadelphia, Boston and other ports along the eastern seaboard, and
headed west to San Francisco. There was no inter-oceanic railroad in the US
and it took many months to cross by land, with many attacks by the indians.
The Nicaragua Canal would have been at sea-level, without any need for
locks, flooding or blowing up mountains, like in Panama. Most of the
navigation in Nicaragua would've been on the San Juan River and lake
Nicaragua. Only a short canal from the southern end of the lake to the
Pacific ocean would have been required (about 12 km long), but it would've
been necessary to keep dredging the river almost continuously due to the
accumulation of silt during the rainy season.

Anyway, that's another story. I just wanted to let you know that I found
many interesting documents in the Harvard pamphlet collection, many related
to Mexico. Thanks again for the link.

Pablo Macias' Grandparents

Thank you! My brother spent years looking into my mom's side of the family. I know it was a lot of work. This is excellent advice. I will pursue it. I know that this type of research requires verification after verification. If, Librada, Pabla & Porfirio were aunts & uncle to my grandfather, then I may be seeing where my grandfather's name came from. But, I don't want to jump to conclusions, so I need to get the records you referenced. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

Steve:

Welcome to the group and congratulations on your early finds. I am sure you will realize that this becomes a never ending quest with each discovery and confirmation only opening up more questions and opportunities for further research.

One thing that I would suggest is that if you have not yet looked at the actual baptism record for your grandfather Pablo Macias, you order the relevant film and look at it. In the archdiocese of Guadalajara, all baptisms were required to list the names of the four grandparents beginning around 1810... thus his baptism should confirm his maternal grandparents' names.

The pattern of Jacinto being used as the daughters surname... changed to Jacinta was not uncommon especially among indigenous people who otherwise lacked a surname, i.e. the second name became the surname. Vicente appears to not have had a surname since in the baptism of his daughter Librada he is listed with no surname.

If Anastacia Jacinta is indeed your ancestor, these would be her siblings:

Visit to Guadalajara Archives

I just returned last night from a visit to my parents' home in Mexico and had the pleasure of spending a couple of days in the archives in Guadalajara with the town historian (cronista) of Totatiche, Esteban Valdes Salazar. Arturo, what a wonderful job you've done, Congratulations. One question, is your book in Spanish only? I'm especially interested in your Caldera lines since I have 4 Caldera grandmothers married into my lines in Jerez. I can read enough Spanish to do a record but have a really hard time with books.

thank you and congratulations again, Linda Castanon-Long

The former archive has the archives of the Real Audiencia de Guadalajara, including records of civil and criminal legal proceedings. At that archive, I was able to locate a copy of the 1711 will of Pedro Carlos de Godoy, which was included as part of the litigation documentation over that will. A transcription of the will is included in my file folder. It includes a wealth of genealogical information about the Carlos de Godoy family as well as some interesting information about customs related to property and inheritance. For example, he takes account of what each of his two wifes brought the respective marriages, compared to his wealth, presumably to show that what he was willing was in fact his and not his wife's... Also he leaves his unmarried daughters a disproportionate amount of wealth, presumably so that they can pay their dowries, which he makes clear he had paid for his married daughters.

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/13649

The latter archive includes the Fondo de Tierras y Aguas which includes "mercedes de tierra" or land grants made by the Spanish Crown as well as later divisions, sale and clarification of land boundaries. The collection has many documents related to families in our region. I reviewed the indices which the archive has compiled on the collection, paying special attention to the Jerez and Tlaltenango jurisdictions and read through a couple of documents related to land grants to Francisco Escobedo and Felipe Lemus... This collection is all filmed and available through LDS though a good index is key.

Linda:

Yes my book is only in Spanish. Believe me it was difficult for me to write it in Spanish but I figured its audience in that language was important and wanted to challenge myself a bit.

The genealogical tables however are all in standard Ahnentafel format and therefore do not require any language knowledge to interpret.

If you are interested in purchasing the book, you can do so directly from the publisher at:

As for the Caldera name, one of Miguel Caldera's nephews through his sister Maria Cid seems to be a major progenitor of this name. However, there were many indigenous people who took the name as a sort of homage to the man who brought peace and was partly of their blood (He was the son of a Chichimec mother). There was in fact one Guachichil chief who took his exact name "Miguel Caldera."

Daniel,

I recently found a reference to Juan del Camino in an obscure document from the old Archivo de Tierras y Aguas de Guadalajara. The document, dated 4 October 1789, doesn't have any information about him, only a reference:

"En el Valle de Vanderas Jurisdicion de tepic en beinte y cuatro dias del mes de octubre de mil setecientos ochenta y nueve años ante mi Don Manuel Gonzales de Villa las [illegible] de este valle por dn Juan del Camino Alcalde mayor y [de] la Santa Hermandad por su Magestad que Dios guarde...etc.".

This reference is on page 77.5 of a "legajo de documentos" included in film No. 270075 of the Archivo de Instrumentos Públicos de Guadalajara, Antiguo Archivo de Tierras y Aguas. I'm not sure this is your ancestor, but I took note of it anyway.

I think the Tepic in this document is the capital of the present State of Nayarit. The city is located among the rugged mountains of the Sierra Madre, a few miles north of Santiago de Compostela. Tepic is a very old city, founded in 1531. As you probably know, Santiago de Compostela was the very first capital of the "Reyno de la Nueva Galicia". The capital was later moved to Nochistlán and finally to Guadalajara. The first expeditions to establish presidios (military posts) and catholic missions in Alta California (along the coast from San Diego to San Francisco) originated in that area. Fray Junípero Serra started his trip in Santiago de Compostela and spent several months in Tepic preparing for his trip. The convent where he stayed is now a museum. The exploration parties to colonize Alta California sailed from the Port of San Blas, founded by the Spanish crown, precisely for the conquest and settlement of the Alta California. The history of this area is closely related to the history of your home state of California, which was part of Mexico until the mid 19th century.

What do you know about your Juan del Camino? Could this be one of his descendants?

Daniel:

I recently ordered copies of a number of maps from Archivo General de Indias that were microfilmed and not digitized. I think the reason may be that such documents are usually odd sizes and in color and the digitization, as you may have noticed scans standard sized (page size) documents in black and white.

It has been a long process. I wrote them via email asking for an official quote for reproduction (on high definition fiche) of the relevant documents.. you can also get photocopies on A4 paper if you like. Once I got the quote (which was snail mailed to me) I had to get a Euro-demoninated bank draft issued in order to pay for the copies and mail it back with the acceptance of the quote.

Overall it has been slow but not too expensive... getting the Euro-denominated bank draft cost more than the three fiche.

You can write me privately if you need more details as to how to go about it.

Hello. My name is Maria Huerta. I have been researching my family for a few years now of and on. My family comes from a little ranchito in the hills of Zacatecas, from Cosalima, Tabasco, Zacatecas to be exact. The names I am focusing on at the moment are Huerta, Medina (my father and mother), Avila and Muñoz (my grandmothers).
I have been able to trace the Huerta line back pretty far to around the early 1820's and thats where I hit a dead end, but 5 generations isn't bad.

I am not having the same luck with the others though. For Medina I only have 2 generations, for Avila I have 2 or 3 (I have some fact checking to do with my aunt) and for Muñoz I have 4. Luckly my great-grandmother on the Muñoz side and my great-grandmother on the Huerta side were sisters, so alot of it is replicated. And yes that means I am related to my self. (eeeww)

Hola. Me llamo Maria Huerta. He estado investigando mi familia durante unos pocos años.

(eeeww)

Hola! My name is Maria Del Pilar Felix but everyone calls me Pilar. I am new to this site and I am very happy to be able to work in my geneology.
Now I am focusing in Aguascalientes, looking for my husband's greatgreatgrandparents. I am looking for Cesario Salas parents, so far I had that his dad was Rufino Salas and his mother was Manuela Delgado or Verado. I found a film from Calvillo, Aguascalientes (LDS Church 635766) from Cesario's marriage in Jul. 03, 1833 that has his parets names and also his wife name and her family, but from here I don't know where to look. If anyone can help me and let me know where can I search.Thank you, Pilar

Hello Pilar, I am Daniel Mendez del Camino, I also have many many ancestors
from Calvillo, your husband might be related to me through Cesario's Wife;
Maria de velasco. As I have seen it now in Calvillo all the Velascos share a
common ancestor in that region and I think its Francisco de Velasco but not
sure. Anyway I am currently viewing the film that you need so if you want I
can look at it and even find more generations. I can possibly help you get
the Salas and Velasco lines to at least 1750 or so. I hope I can help.

Hola Daniel,
I am hoping that someone can help me. The only thing I know is that she got
married to Cesario Salas, on 03 Jul 1833 in Vicaria de Ojo Calente y
Mineral, Aguascalientes, México, she was 16 at the time. Therefore, she was
born about 1818. Her parents were Luis Velasco & Maria Saturnina Macias.
They had about 8 kids, their names are: Maria Gerarda (christening-date 10
Oct. 1803), Jose Eugenio (christening-27 Nov 1805), Maria
Josefa(christening-29 Nov. 1807), Jose Eugenio(christening-25 Mar.1810),
Jose Casimiro(birthday-2 Mar 1813), Maria Claudia Jesus(birthday 07 Jul.
1815), Maria San Jose de la Cruz(christening-26 Nov.1817), and Maria de
Jesus Velasco Macias about 1818. One of her brothers, Jose Eugenio(the 2nd
one) his christening was in Nochistlan, Zacatecas and the others in
Calvillo, Aguascalientes. I could not find the christening or the birthday
records of Maria de Jesus Velasco.

Hello, Pillar,

I read with interest that there are DELGADOS in your family. The DELGADOS in my research were in TAMAULIPAS by the 1800's, but I am sure not all members of one family came to NUEVO SANTANDER, and they surely left lots of relatives where they came from.
If you know more about MANUELA DELGADO and her family I would like to hear from you.

Thanks!

My name is Irene, better known as Kelly by my family and friends. I live in Southern Utah but my husband and I are gone from home a great deal. We will be leaving again most likely sometime next week to visit a daughter in the state of Washington. We will spend some time there and then travel to California for Christmas where we have a son in the Oxnard area. After that I am not sure what we will do. We do take are computers, printers with us. We also have the internet when traveling.

My maternal grandfather and his ancesctors are from Zacatecas, my grandfather was born in Moyahua. My grandfather is Francisco Reynoso o Renteria, born in 1885. His father is Gabino Reynoso o Renteria, his birth taking place in 1858, Moyahua. Gabino's dad is Gregorio Reynoso o Renteria who married Maria Merced Ponce. Gregorio was born in 1823. He married Maria Norberta Romero. Gregorio's father is Silverio of Zacatecas, born about 1771. He married Maria Gregoria Carrillo of Moyahua. Gregoria's parents are: Jose Miguel Carrillo and Maria Geronima de Luna.

My mother used to relate to me that Gregorio's father died when Gregorio was very young and that a family with the surname Renteria took him in and raised him. He was so grateful for their acts of kindness that he took on the Renteria name in their honor. I question this somewhat as I have searched the records, I have found that even Silverio is known as Renteria. Many of the documents I have seen list both names. There may have been an adoption, but I believe it is further back in time.

My mother's people come from the state of Aguascaclientes. Some of her surnames are: Pulido, de Loera, de Luera, Reyes, Serrano, Romo de Vibar, Castorena, Ruiz de Esparsa and the list goes on. Will write more on my mother's lines later. Now I have to see to my husband who just fell off a ladder. He was on the second to the top step.

Happy Hunting to all

Kelly

My name is Ramon, Barrios Miranda,http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/16372

First I would like to apologize to Mr. Puentes for jumping the gun on my previous intoduction, and to say thanks, for allowing me to join the group.

I'm researching both my father's and my mother's side of the family.

My grandfather's ( Juan Mejia Miranda) family was originally from el rancho de Señor de Roma, Jerez Zacatecas. He was in the U.S. from 1916 to 1933, While living in southern California, he had several children, one being my father Ramon. When Juan returned to Mexico, they settled in Calera de Victor Rosales, Zacatecas.

My mother's family (Barrios) were from Juancho Rey, Tepetongo, Zacatecas. They also settled in Calera. This is where my parents grew up,and later married. My wife is from there also, and we still have family there. My father brought our family to the U.S. in 1962.

I took a break from my research for awhile, and now I'm trying to get back into it, back to the questions I left off at. Maybe someone from the group might have some input.

My paternal line is : Ramon Mejia Miranda f. (1922-1997) Juan Mejia Miranda gf (1896-1977) He married Juana Mejia. Simon ggf (1868-1900) he married Altagracia Vega, Felipe gggf (a- 1844) he married Maria Ladislao Mejia, and Pedro Miranda ggggf (a-1820) he married Maria Marcos Perez.

I'm trying to find records for a direct connection between Felipe and Pedro, and on back from there. So far, I've only found Pedro referenced as the grandfather in his decentents's birth or babtism records. I've been unable to find a marriage record for him, or his two sons, Esteban and Felipe ( why only two sons)? I need a direct connection (vital records) to this particular "Pedro Miranda".

My maternal line is: Gregorio Barrios gf (1894-1972) he married Vicenta Hernandez, Cosme ggf (1868-a1904) he married Timotea Reyes, Mucio gggf (a1825) he married Francisca Miranda, Ciriaco ggggf (a1804)he married Gabriela Robles.

Thank you, and have a safe and happy Thanksging Day Holiday

Ramon

Santa Rosalia - Angola

Dear Marge,

My great-great-grandfather Antonio Frias Jasso moved to Tepic in 1848,
shortly after my great-great grandmother Refugio Ruiz de Esparza died in
Aguascalientes while giving birth to my great-grandmother Josefa Frias

Santa Rosalia

Can anyone tell me if Santa Rosalia is anywhere near AugaCalientes? I have Garcia family from that area, but I can't seem to find any record with the actual name of Santa Rosalia, except for the birth cert.

Yolanda,
Thank you for your reply in helping me look for my family. First, I
see you are
from El Paso, I was born and raised there. What a small world.
Anyway, I am looking for Cruz Bustamante Born 16, Aug. 1883 in Santa
Rosalia, D.
1-May-1931. I know his grave in El Paso. He married Rafaela Garcia 1896. I
believe at Guardian Angel Church in EP. Rafiela (another spelling) was born
16, Aug. 1883. I believe also in the Santa Rosala area. She died in El paso.
My problem is I can't seem to find anything beyond my great grandfather
Cruz. I
also can't find much on Rafaela's brothers or sisters. I have only one known
sister, Ramona Garcia. Never married or children, born and died in El Paso.
Any help would be appreciated. I've never given out info for help, so
I hope I
gave you what you might need. Thanks again. Lupe

Yolanda,
I looked up my records...here's a good one. The death cert. (in hand) states
date of birth for Cruz was May 3, 1876. Info given by my great uncle. The
information sheets I have him as DOB 4-26-1882 I have checked the census for
1910 and 1920, both are different. one has him born 1884 and the other 1888.
I guess I really hadn't paid that much attention, as the family listed are all
correct. I just checked the picture of his grave and it says he was
born 1877.
The stone was put on by his daughters, it does not have DOB, just died at 69
yrs old. Do you have any suggestions. I will get back write on the Benedicto
and Petra names. I know I've come across those names. I want to talk to my
daughter to see what she has. Thanks
Lupe

To Lupe Kerr,

If you go to the Ranchos website you will find a link- Diccionario Geografico etc. by Cubas. In it you will find a list of 8 haciendas named Santa Rosalia. There is also a long list of ranchos with the same name. San Luis Potosi has three ranchos and Jalisco two. I'm not so sure that the ranchos in Potosi are closer than the ones in Jalostotitlan or Tepaatitlan.

It is also a city in Chihuahua (now known as Camargo) as well as a town in Baja California Sur. Cities have changed names over time (a lot were changed after the Guerra de la Reforma and Revolutionary wars), so the time frame is important in tracking that down. > Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2007 18:40:35 -0800> From: mgervassi@earthlink.net> To: general@nuestrosranchos.org> Subject: Re: [Nuestros Ranchos] Santa Rosalia> > If I am not mistaken, it is in Chihuhua, Mex. but I don't know if its close to Augacalientes.> > Mary > > -----Original Message-----> >From: Lupe Kerr > >Sent: Nov 13, 2007 3:42 PM> >To: general@lists.nuestrosranchos.org> >Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Santa Rosalia> >> >> >Can anyone tell me if Santa Rosalia is anywhere near AugaCalientes? Thank you Tony for your information. If you will permit me another
question, on
one of the Ancestry hits, it has my greatgrandfather being born in Agua
Calientes then it has the word Angola I've been trying to figure out
what it
is when written Aguacalientes, Angola.....That to me is a completely different
area not even related to Mexico. Have you ever come across that as a "born"
area? Thanks again

The best bet is Angola is a misswritten "Ags." or "Aguas", being the case they wanted to write "Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes" which should be the correct statement, take it for sure.

Tony,

I missed the previous correspondence on this subject, but read your last message this morning. On the subject of Angola, I would like to share some information with the group that might shed some light on this obscure subject. First, I would like to confirm that Angola is a large country
(about 2/3 the size of Mexico) in West Africa. It is bound by Zaire, Zambia, Namibia and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It is very rich in natural resources, but most people live in extreme poverty. I visited Angola once a month for seven years (1997-2004) while working as a contractor for ExxonMobil, and before that for nearly five years (1986-1990) while working for Chevron Oil Company. Angola has huge petroleum reserves and some of the largest deepwater oil reservoirs in the world. Luanda, Angola's capital city, is a long way from my home in Dallas, Texas. It usually took me two days to get there, flying via Europe from New York or Newark to Lisbon, Paris or Frankfurt, and from there to Luanda. Sometimes I flew from Atlanta or Miami to Johannesburg in South Africa, and from there to Luanda. Quite an exhausting trip.

While conducting genealogical research in Aguascalientes and other parts of Mexico I've seen many references to Angola in old church and civil records. The parties involved were usually African slaves imported from west Africa to work in sparsely populated areas, such as Aguascalientes and Zacatecas.

While standing-by in Angola in 2002 for an offshore rig move, I spent one Sunday afternoon visiting a slave museum near Luanda. It was located in a small building on a remote beach where the slave traders from Europe came to pick up their infamous cargo. The slaves, captured by the stronger African tribes, were sold on site to the highest bidder. The ships stayed at anchor while the natives transported their prisoners in dugout canoes from that building (now a museum) to the moored ships less than a mile away. Quite cruel and inhuman behavior, but that's the way it was in those days. Most of the slaves were taken to the sugarcane fields, mines and coffee plantations of Brazil (like Angola, Brazil was a Portuguese colony) but many ended up in the cotton fields of the southern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. A few years before I had visited a similar slave staging area in the city of Dakar, Senegal. Most of the slaves sold in Dakar were from Gam
bia and Senegal, and ended up in the United States.

I believe the people in the records in question were either African slaves from Angola, or their descendants. I may be able to verify this by reading some of those records. Can you email me a scan?

Bill,
I was the one asking questions about Angola. My Great grandfather has that
written in several of the items I have found. I'd like to email you a copy,
but I am afraid I havent mastered the attach thing yet. I went on Ancestry
Search. I put in Cruz Bustamante 1883 It comes up to Border Crossing
from Mex
to US. Its the 4th entry down having him as Birth 1878 Arrival 13, June
1921....on there it has AguaCalientes, AguaCalientes, Angola...If you could
shed lite on this, I'd appreciate it. Also the info you gave on the bookstore
address was also helpful to me. Thanks again. Actually I have to thank
Nuestrosranchos...I have had very nice helpful people giving me help Lupe

Lupe,

Two other people have suggested taking a second look at the documents you think say "Angola" because usually when someone has been born in the capital city (Aguascalientes) of the state of Aguascalentes, it is sometimes written as "Aguascalientes, Aguas", or they abbreviate the state name some other way (Ags).

I looked at the immigration record you refer to and I don't see the word "Angola" anywhere. The index for this record says Birthplace: Aguascalientes, and Birth Country: Angola, but I think it was the state abbreviation "Aguas" that they mistook for Angola. I just can't see how they arrived at that. In the indexes for the Census records in Ancestry many of the names are so fractured in the index that it is hard to find who you are looking for unless you tediously look through each page for the community or county they lived in then. In the 1930 census on Ancestry doesn't it list Cruz' birthplace as "Mex" ?

Emilie,
You are right, Cruz was born in Mexico, it just so weird to see Angola on so
many of the files I've found. It say's that on the "hits" from
Ancestry. When
they are open, it never indicates Angola on the actual doc. I'm just
confused.
It could very well be a mis translation, but it's on so many hits, that it's
hard to believe they are all errors. Thanks for your help and input. Lupe

Lupe,

I just checked the Ancestry website and found the information about your great-grandfather. The index clearly says Angola. I didn't try to go any further into the website because I'm not a member of Ancestry and do not want to get a membership at this time. Most of my research has been transcribing church and civil records from Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Nayarit, and exchanging info. with other researchers.

Now that I know your source for your great-grandfather's border crossing and date of birth, I have changed my opinion on the subject. A border crossing in 1921 and dob of 1878 probably has nothing to do with the people that arrived from Angola in the 16th and 17th century. Since I didn't read your first message, I didn't know that you were talking about recent history. You're absolutely right questioning the veracity of that information. It could be a blunder made by the person who transcribed the original records. To find out for sure try to find the original records used by Ancestry.com. Maybe they can help if you are a member.

One more on Errors on the records, I have a whole list of people from the Barrio of San Vicente, District of Tamazula De Gordiano, Jalisco Mexico listed ad being born in the Caribbean. I sent Familysearch a message years ago about the errors but nothing ever came of it, they are still listed online in the wrong country. Another error I've found online is when people are in the early records are listed as from Vallidolid, they are listed online as from Spain when they are actually from Michoacan Mexico.

Linda back in Everett.

Estimado Bill:

He encontrado a una María Chichimeca, etc.

Saludos,
Bill Figueroa

Hi Anna,

Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the bookstore where I bought
"Los Españoles en Aguascalientes durante la época colonial" but will retrive
the box where I filed the receipts from my 2006 trip and let you know later.
The bookstore is located in "El Parian", a well known shopping area in
Aguascalientes. You can also buy local history books at the University of
Aguascalientes, where they probably have a better selection.

I've been trying to figure out whether I bought "Encomenderos y Hacendados
1534-1650" in Aguascalientes or in Guadalajara. I'll let you know later.

Have you been in Aguascalientes before? Do you know your way around the
city?

Hi Anna,

Below is the address for the bookstore where I bought "Los Españoles en
Aguascalientes durante la época colonial". I couldn't find the receipt, but
it'll be easy to find with this information.

The mall is known as "El Parián" and is located at the intersection of
"Francisco Rivero y Gutiérrez" and "Morelos" (Zona Centro). It is a 15
minute walk from the main plaza, the Cathedral and the Palacio Municipal.
Although everybody knows where "El Parián" is, your best bet is to take a
taxi cab from your hotel. Across the street is the beautiful "Templo de San
Diego", built between 1653 and 1682. A lot of history here. It is well
worth a visit and a good landmark to use as a reference point. Next to the
church is a building that was the convent of the franciscan friars, which
houses art exhibits (at the room "Jesús Gómez de Portugal").

As I recall, the bookstore at "El Parián" is on the ground level outside the
building. The phone number for "El Parián" is (449) 915-61-33. If you call
them ahead of time they can give you the bookstore's phone number and its
exact location at the mall.

I'll try to send you more info. about "Encomenderos y Hacendados 1534-1650"
this afternoon. Good luck and have a nice trip.

Laminating Birth Cert.

Hi everyone it has been awhile since I have been online. We found out about a month ago my mother has colon cancer, so taking care of my parents comes first. In visiting with them one day my father told me that he found his fathers birth certificate and baptismal cert. from mexico. So my question to you is

Yolanda, my prayers are with you, I'm in California on a similar journey so appreciate your situation. Now sounds like a perfect time to share memories and stories from your parents about the things in their history they may have never told you about before. I'm finding my Dad is recalling all kinds of things in the month I've been with him. I thought he'd told me everything before since I've asked for years but now those old memories of his grandparents and parents seem to be coming back to him. His memories make him smile so it's a good thing for him too.

Be sure to photograph the records for your files so you always have a copy of the original. Marge sounds right about keeping it in an acid free folder.

I would ask a photo archivist. I think laminating it would be a
BIIIIIIG mistake. It needs to be kept in an acid free archival type
folder, etc., so a photo archivist would be best to ask. Marge:)

John, A big warm hug of welcome. Many years ago, you encouraged me not to give up at my attempt to read that first film, and to think of it as learning how to read Spanish...again.

Since then, I have researched many of my lines, and I am back to the mid 1600's.
Thanks again.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Ann Rubio Valdez and I am a new member to the Nuestros Ranchos
group. My research is primarily in Jalisco in the areas of Ocotlan, Jamay,
San Diego de Alejandria, & Arandas. Surnames I am searching for are Rubio,
Vargas, Vasquez, Torres, Flores/Jimenez. My father was born in Ocotlan in
1922. He died when I was young so I do not have many details about his
family and life. My file can be found under Ann Rubio. The direct link to
my file on the website is
http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/filemanager/active?fid=2110. I did find some
connections to my father (an aunt and a great-aunt) but I did not know how
to fit them on my pedigree chart.

I am hoping to find any information on my father's ancestors. Please
contact me if anyone has any connection to my family. Any leads are
welcome.

Sincerely,

Ann Rubio Valdez

Like you, I am among the brand new members of the Nuestros Ranchos group.
For this reason at the present time I have not much to offer to help in your
search. But I think I will, because you and I share the interest in
searching two surnames: Vazquez and Vargas.

My maternal grandmother was Josefina VARGAS Salmeron (4/28/1908 -
10/16/1981), born in Cinco Minas, Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco. Married to
Filippo Olmo Dattrino (Italian) on October 12, 1925. Daughter of Cesareo

My paternal grandfather was Jose Michel VAZQUEZ (2/6/1897 - 10/10/1990),
born in Autlan, Jalisco. Married to Luz Lopez Pelayo. Son of Ricardo Michel
Becerra (1858 - 1950) and Guadalupe VAZQUEZ.

Good luck and stay in touch !!

HI My name is Brady Umfleet and I am researching my
wife's family. The surnames I am researching are
Velasquez and Macedo in Etzatlan, Jalisco.

Her grandmother was Maria DeJesus Velasquez y Macedo
born August 15th, 1900 or 1904 in Etzatlan, Jalisco.
She was the daughter of Lucio Velasquez and Juana
Macedo.

I have some film at the FHL that should help fill in
some details.

Felipe,

Thank you for your information. Do you know if your maternal grandmother
had any children by the name of Jose or Carlos? Although my father was
baptized in Ocotlan, Jalisco, I don't have any records showing where he or
his parents were born.
All I know of my grandparents is that Josefa Vargas died when my father was
very young and his father sometime after her. My father was raised by his
uncle Santos.

Thanks,

Ann,

My maternal grandmother married only once and she had three children:
Yolanda Olmo Vargas, Clara Olmo Vargas and Alberto Olmo Vargas.

Sorry, no children by the name of Carlos or Jose. However one of my
grandmother's brothers was Jose Vargas Salmeron, but do not know where he
was born, if he ever married nor if he had any children. If he did, the
chances that he named one of his children after him are not slim.

If/when I find out, I will let you know.

My name is Ramon, Barrios Miranda and am glad to be a new member of the group.

My grandfather's ( Juan Mejia Miranda) family was originally from el rancho de Señor de Roma, Jerez Zacatecas. He was in the U.S. from 1916 to 1933, when he return to Mexico they settled in Calera de Victor Rosales, Zacatecas. My mother's family (Barrios) are from Juancho Rey, Tepetongo, Zacatecas. They also settled in Calera. This is where my parents grew up,and later married. My wife is from there also, and we still have family there.

I took a break from my research for awhile, and now I'm trying to get back into it, back to the questions I left off at. Maybe someone from the group might be have some input.

I need to find to find records for a direct connection between Felipe and Pedro Miranda, and on back from there. So far, I've only found him referenced as the grandfather. I've been unable to find a marriage record for him and wife Maria Marcos Perez, or his two children, Esteban and Felipe ( why only two sons)? I need a direct connection to the right Pedro.

Hi Linda--

I just wanted to ask you a quick question-- I looked at your online family tree, and I saw the del Real last name. I have done extensive work on this family, and I see a connection between your del Real family and mine. Are your del Real relatives your ancestors? If so, we are related! So far, I have found that people with the last name of del Real in the Huejucar/Totatiche/Colotlan area descend from one couple from Spain.

Hi Rosalinda, no, all Del Rios are related by marriage only and not direct ancestors. I have them in Jalisco, Michoacan and Zacatecas but have not attempted to really research them, only what I've found online and if they happen to be in a film I'm researching.
thank you for checking, I do appreciate it. Lots of times if I can't connect a surname but have the surname in my records I still copy the record but just don't post it online.

So, in your tree you have Dionicio del Real--> Juliana del Real--> Marina Rodarte who married Clemente Castanon. This family is not related to you? :( Well, if you ever meet any descendants, they are related to me.

I have done extensive work on this family, and I see a connection between your del Real family and mine. Are your del Real relatives your ancestors? If so, we are related! So far, I have found that people with the last name of del Real in the Huejucar/Totatiche/Colotlan area descend from one couple from Spain.

Chupadero

Hello Everyone!

I wondered if anyone knew where Chupadero or Chupaderos is? Its the first time I have found it in my family history. I found it in the Baptisimo records for San Jose, Ojuelos de Jalisco. Is it in Zacatecas, Jalisco or San Luis Potosi?

Sofia:

There are many Chupaderos according to the Diccionario Geográfico, Histórico y Biográfico de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos by Antonio García Cubas.

You can access it online... look under GEOGRAPHY in the LINKS section of the Nuestros Ranchos site.

There is one in San Luis Potosi (San Ciro de Albercas), three in Coahuila, one in Nuevo Leon, one in Chihuahua, two in Guanajuato, one in Michoacan, etc.

Thank you Arturo.
I knew there were several but I needed to find the closest to Ojuelos, Jalisco. I imagine its the one in San Lois Potosi.
Thanks again.

Estimada Maria, Muchas gracias.

José, Juan, Conrrada, Guadalupe, Rita, y Agustina.

Agradezco infinitamente tu ayuda.

Hasta pronto.
