Some History on Huanusco and La Luz before the "Rulebook"

At the request of some members I decided to give a brief to the point explanation on how families in Huanusco marry. But I decieded to split this topic on two. Well basically we (our hacienda) started with 12 families. They had the opportunity to live anywhere on the 30,000 acre plot of land, which made up La Luz. At the height of La Luz around 1913 it would prob be 30,000 or so. After all those marriages, purchases and tradings...and compromises. Because it reached into Calvillo and Tabasco and Jalpa. Jesus Maria was a small hacienda. San PEdro was the same size or so as La Luz. Luckily San PEdro was owned by Cousins the Duran, also Jesus Maria the Rodriguez family and La Luz by the Camino Family. All were related. So I think thats why my grandpa says our family got away from all sorts of things. Like a tío would be the Sherrif or the cousin the Bishop or another cousin the banker and so on. Anyway the families were. There were others. but these were the big hanchos of MAriano Camino

New Family Search Website Update

Im not supposed to be doing this but since I have made so many wonderful people here on ranchos, I couldnt keep this to myself. The new website isn't officially launched but is now functioning as Beta 2 or 3 is now starting. It's quite LONG! The new website can only be accessed my church members for now but to see if we can play around with it before it goes public.

What Im told is it is totally seperated from Ancestry.com. This project that should be completed by 2012 will replace the microfilm at the Family History Centers. Youll be able to view all microfilm online. It will be free. For now the church is just testing beta 2. Hope this helps. -Dániel Méndez del Camino

Ancestry.com is not associated in any way with Familysearch.com. Ancestry.com used to allow the Family History centers to access them for free but that ended last year here in Washington, you can access Ancestry.com for free at your local library. I am not Mormon but really appreciate the free use of their films and readers. I know we pay a minimal fee for the film but they don't have to share it with non-Mormons at all! It's a service that's been invaluable to me especially after going to Mexico and not being able to get the records I can get at the history center here at home.

Too be able to see all the films online within 10 years will be wonderful since many people don't live near a center or their center has limited hours.

It's the same here in New Mexico, what I found with Ancestry.com that they have little in Mexico and Spain,
when I spoke to them recently they had no intention to include them in the near + or- 2 year future.
They like most corporate enterprises is concentraring on China. I use it periodaclly to try and get leads, and
I don't know about the rest of you but I find there are many errors for my buck. Mari

What prompted my question, was the amount of times that the newfamilysearch.org linked/referenced ancestry.com, as well as other fee based websites. It's not the film rental fee that I have concerns about, but the very limited hours that our Family History Center is opened.

Thanks to thisproject by the latest of 2012, as of also what I have heard they'' be releasing the website as different parts at a time not an official launch date for everything so for us Mormons our temple ordinances can be prepared at the new website by next week. But You'll be able to view all 200 milion microfilms in your home 24/7. Which gets me excited because now I dont have to wait two weeks for each film to arrive. -Dáaniel Méndez del Camino

It is more like a giant leap. I too, am so excited about this. 27/7. Some of us are going to be getting a lot less sleep! I sometimes wait 6 weeks to see my films, and then I have to fight for time on the film reader! Even more, when my husband was ill and we were homebound, it put my research to an immediate stop. Being able to access at home is a dream come true! I have about 11 films I need to order. I was thinking about just making a trip all the way to Utah, but now I think I will order one or two every few months and await the new website. Cause you know when I order those films, it will just add to more that I want to order. Trying to pick which one to order each month is agonizing.

Erlinda,

There is a Banuelos family who claims to be my cousins and cousins your Banuelos branch. They don't know HOW they are cousins because I can't find any records of them anywhere. Their descendants don't know either...they barely remembered their grandfather's name. My older brothers also told me that they are our cousins but also don't know anything. I was wondering if you could help me find out? I didn't include any living descendants. They live in my hometown where most of the Banuelos family lives. I remember visiting them when I was a child. My mother said that she was my "Tia" Nicolasa Banuelos born on 23 Jul 1915 in Huehucar. Her mother's name was Mercedes Flores born on 24 Sep 1888 married to a Lazaro Banuelos. I alsp thought that because Mercedes was a "Flores" that perhaps she was from my paternal grandmother Petra Flores Sandoval's side. Mercedes' father was Santos Flores.
I ran a check and located a Mercedes Flores born on 09/24/1888 to a Santos Flores in Bolivia. Does that kinda throw a monkey-wrench in the Family Tree?

Jose:

Welcome to the group.

If you had not yet looked through familysearch.org, there is some useful information in the database there that may help with your search for your grandfather. While there does not appear to be a Francisco Leon Covarrubias in the database in Huejucar, there are a couple of other children being born in the late 1860s and 1870s to Nicolas Leon and Maria del Refugio Covarrubias, who appear to be your grandfather's siblings. Their baptism records should list the names of your great-great-grandparents.

MARIA EUGENIA LEON COVARRUBIAS - IGI
Gender: Female Christening: 30 NOV 1868 Huejucar, Jalisco, Mexico

PASCUAL LEON COBARRUVIAS - IGI
Gender: Male Christening: 03 JAN 1872 Huejucar, Jalisco, Mexico

The Family History Library has Huejucar civil registries on film beginning in 1873 so your grandfather is likely there if he was born in Huejucar.

Likewise, if you order Film 0445147, you will be able to see the actual marriage record of Nicolas and Refugio and see the names of their parents, their age at marriage and their places of birth. Nicolas does not appear to have been born in Huejucar.

There are a number of Nicolas Leon Martinez born around the right time in San Luis Potosi and Chihuahua, but his marriage record is the best bet as it will allow you to confirm the names of his parents and his birthplace.

JE. CONCEPCION NICOLAS LEON MARTINES - IGI
Gender: Male Christening: 08 DEC 1844 San Jose Or San Joseph, Alaquines, San Luis Potosi, Mexico

JOSE NICOLAS MELQUIADIS LEON MARTINES - IGI
Gender: Female Christening: 10 DEC 1844 San Jose, Hidalgo Del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico

Thank you for your response and info! I've looked at the microfilm on Christenings 1868-1876 ? and found 3 of my GF Francisco's siblings--- Ma. Eugenia 30 NOV 1869, Pascual 03 JAN 1872, and Espiridion 18 DEC 1874, and all three list Nicolas' parents as Felix de Leon and Simona Martines. Rosalinda Ruiz found their marriage records - 15 Oct 1844 at San Luis, Colotlan, Jalisco, Mexico. I was able to find christening records for 3 of Nicholas' siblings - Ma. Tomasa 25 SEP 1845, Hipolito 19 AUG 1848 both in Colotlan and Maria 10 JUN 1860 inHuejucar. With Rosalinda Ruiz's help I found their elder ancestors. BUT nothing yet on my GGF Nicholas or his son my GF Francisco. I suspect that GF Francisco was about the same age as his wife Petra Flores b. 21 Feb 1884 in Huejucar also.
I will order the marriage records for my GGF Nicolas de Leon and Ma. del Refugio Covarrubias who married on 08 Jun 1866 in Huejucar for further study.

The mystery still remains of when and where my GGF Nicolas and of his son my GF Francisco were born.

Starting with Nicolas' father Felix, Rosalinda Ruiz helped me find most of the ancesters in San Luis, Colotlan, Jalisco, Mexico. Below is the updated DE LEON family tree.

sometimes there are missings years for records so trying another source, like a civil birth registration instead of a baptism could help. I've found when I can't find a marriage record sometimes a marriage information record gives me information I need. Sometimes I just have to accept that I'm not going to find an exact date because there are no records surviving for those years.

just a suggestion,
Linda in Everett

Hi Linda,

This might be a dumb question but since I'm new to this and I can't find certain people. Is there a way to see or get a hold of these civil registrations on line?

Hi Sofia,

they are available just like the other records at your family history center. You order them the same way as the baptism and church marriages. I'm not sure what state or city you're searching in but the list of what they offer would be in your Familysearch.com site. For some reason the Familysearch.com online shows only church records but the others are available to order to be read at the center. Sometimes they even give more information than church records such as ages of parents at birth registrations where baptism records don't usually give ages. Accept age's with a grain of salt since they can be off by many years especially when they are guessed at by other people giving the information. I have one record where my ancestor is listed as age 50 at his second marriage when he was actually over 70! He must have been spry since he had 2 children with his 38 year old wife!

good luck in your search, Linda in Everett

I'm not sure what state or city you're searching in but the list of what
they offer would be in your Familysearch.com site. For some reason the
Familysearch.com online shows only church records but the others are
available to order to be read at the center. Sometimes they even give more
information than church records such as ages of parents at birth
registrations where baptism records don't usually give ages. Accept age's
with a grain of salt since they can be off by many years especially when
they are guessed at by other people giving the information. I have one
record where my ancestor is listed as age 50 at his second marriage when he
was actually over 70! He must have been spry since he had 2 children with
his 38 year old wife!

good luck in your search, Linda in Everett

certain people. Is there a way to see or get a hold of these civil

from what I've found the Vital Records Index are baptisms... I think... I still have no idea why they are separate from just regular baptisms but they usually include more information. They are different from region to region too. In Jerez Zacatecas I've found very few marriage or death records online unless they've been entered by an individual and not through the history center. In Zapotlan El Grande and Tamazula Jalisco I find marriage records complete with parents included and sometimes even where they are from. Good question!

Lupe Kerr,

Most of the LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints) Family History Library films are NOT indexed into Batch Numbers; but information can be researched by reading the respective microfilms from the Library

Dear Ranchos Members:

Just a note to Daniel's great find in the IGI database. The Mexico, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas batch numbers that are up on that site were compiled from our own site's database, which in turn was compiled by volunteers just like you. So give yourselves a pat on the back.

In the spirit of cooperation, I shared the batch number part of the database with Lynn Turner who spent the time and effort to put the site that Daniel mentioned together.

Origen de los Enriquez en Jalostotitlan, Jalisco

Hello to all! Saludos a todos! Hope every one had a great Christmas and also wishing you the best for the new year!

I'm stuck on my research for my Enriquez family in Jalostotitlan. The latest couple I have is Jose Maria Enriquez and Maria Nicolasa Gonzalez de Villasenor. They are my 6GGrandparents. They lived around the mid 1700's. I can't figure out anything before that. Their son, Jose Vicente Yrineo Enriquez Gonzalez (who was a twin by the way) was born around 1785 and married Maria Francisca Romo de Vivar. Vicente's daughter, Maria Gerarda Enriquez, eventually made her way to Amoxochitl (Juchipila area) and married my GGGrandfather Jose Maria Enriquez... yes, there were both Enriquez :-) -- so makes for an interesting line to have 2 last names join in different towns with who knows what backgroud.

Hi Miggy,

It all makes sense except Francisco Enriquez being born in 1617 in Nochistlan (that would make him 100 at Joseph's birth).

Anyway, any help would be great. Does anyone have any info on the origins of the Enriquez in La Nueva Galicia?

Saludos!

OK I figured it out. The 2 I have on my tree are aunt and niece. The niece is the one whose mom is Gertrudis Diaz de Leon.

You said you have Jose Maria's marriage certificate... do you have his DOB, etc?

Thanks!!

Hi Miggy,

Thanks to the info you sent me I also came across the marriage of yet another Ana Maria Alvarez Tostado but this one to Jose Sixto Enriquez in Teocaltiche. Does anyone happen to have any more info on this wedding? I think this might be my connection to my Enriquez from Amoxochitl (Juchipila area).

Thanks!!

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] Origen de los Enriquez en Jalostotitlan, Jalisco

Anyway, any help would be great. Does anyone have any info on the origins of the Enriquez in La Nueva Galicia?

Saludos!

Hi Miggy,

You noted earlier that Juana Manuela Gonzalez de Hermosillo was Jose Maria Enriquez's mom. Do you happen to have any info on her? I found a similar record for Juana Gonzalez de Hermosillo as daughter to Juana De Anda Altamirano and Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo christened on 21 May 1725 in San Juan de los Lagos (that would make her about 16 at marriage).

Thoughts anyone?

Gracias!

Sandra Gómez de Mendoza

It all makes sense except Francisco Enriquez being born in 1617 in Nochistlan (that would make him 100 at Joseph's birth).

Looking for info on DE LEON's from Huejucar, Jalisco

Can anyone help me with my family tree? My father's (Elias de Leon) ancestors are from Huejucar, Jalisco. Beyond my GGF Nicolas de Leon, born Abt 1845, I know nothing.
His father was Francisco de Leon son of Nicolas de Leon and Refugio Covarrubias. He was a music composer who was born after 1866 and died probably around 1910-1915 at the hands of a beating from Pancho Villa's thugs. Only recently have I discovered that Francisco had a brother named Espiridion de Leon who was baptised in Huejucar on 12/18/1874.

I should have looked before asking.. Joseph Leon from Modesto... My aunt Virginia Banuelos Gutierrez who lives in Stkn Ca. is from the line of Ysaac Banuelos but I think you already have this information. She told me a De Leon had contacted her but never got back to her. There are 2 or 3 people in this group related to this line.

Hi, Linda! Virginia didn't tell me about you. I've been keeping in touch with her sister Irene in SSF and Brian Banuelos. Brian said that he was going to compare data with me but so far...no word from him!

Who are the other cousins related to this line?

Can you help me with the Banuelos and Flores ancestor pedigree?

Hello what name do you go by? I missed your introduction to the group.

I checked and didn't see your info submitted yet, I look forward to seeing it. Rosalinda Ruis and your moderator Joseph Puentes are both related to the Banuelos line in Huejucar and generously shared information with me. What I have is mostly from them plus what I found on the IGI. I haven't pursued this line very far since it was information for my Aunt and not part of my immediate family research but I am watching to see if there is a connection with the Banuelos from Jerez Zacatecas as Rosalia suspects. I did post my findings on Rootsweb for easier reading. Some people in the group are busy during the holidays so postings will be more likely later in Jan..

good luck in your search, Linda in Everett

At the end of this email youll find a Nicolas Leon that I found that may be yours since he was born in Huejucar, but only a guess. I strongly believe you should order that micorfilm for the marriage before coming to any conclusions. -Daniel Mendez del Camino

Thanks! I've ordered the microfilm for Pascual and Maria Eugenia.
I did find Higinio but am unsure because Nicolas would've been 14 years old at marriage, I'll order that microfilm as well.

Thanks for all of your help and support1 You don't realize how much this means to me.
I ordered the microfilm 2 months ago and I received the microfilm today and found out the names of both sets of his grandparents! Pascual's paternal grandparents were FELIX DE LEON and SIMONA MARTINES and his maternal grandparents were CATARINO COBARRUBIAS and ROSALIA MAYORGA !!

Can anyone help me with their history?

Comment

I misread the last name for ROSALIA , it's MONTOYA (not Mayorga). I have photoshop and enhanced the photo to read it better, besides, I was able to find her info on marriage to CATARINO COVARRUVIAS

Joseph Puentes, who is the moderator of the group, has the relevant Colotlan marriage film (0443784) on indefinite loan in his local family history center. You can check for whether a member has a film or not in the films database.

If you ask him nicely :) and he has time he may be willing to do the look up for you. The actual record should have the names of their parents. Covarrubias is a very prolific name around Totatiche and Colotlan, Jalisco. Many indigenous people who took the name and some from the direct line of an Isabel Covarrubias, who was married to Jacinto Talamentes in the early to mid 1600s (perhaps the earliest Spanish settlers in Totatiche) and were likely the owners of the San Antonio de Cartagenas Hacienda right on the border of what are now the municipalities of Colotlan and Totatiche.

I'd be glad to do very very specific look ups on any of my films on the
first Thursdays of every month. You just missed one yesterday. If you
want a look up for next month send me:

the film number, the names and exact date of the event.

You're correct on the name MONTOYA. I've located some names BUT is there any way you can view the film and locate the parents of Felix de Leon and his wife Simona Martines probably born Abt. 1820 in San Luis, Colotlan, Jalisco, Mexico and also the parents of Catarino Covarrubias and his wife Rosalia Montoya probably born Abt. 1816 in San Luis, Colotlan, Jalisco, Mexico ???? Or at least point me in the right direction...do you think that Joseph Puentes might know?

I can certainly look up the Huejucar records, but my Colotlan films are too early. The only one I have that can answer any of your questions is #0443784, which may have Felix's possible first marriage. However, one of Felix and Simona's children was baptized in Huejucar, so next week I'll look at the film. It should contain the names of Felix's and Simona's parents.

I found the record that you mentioned...THANKS! I hope to hear from you soon. In order for me to view it here, it takes about 4-6 weeks after I order it from the local LDS FamilySearch center.

researching records

I just wanted to tell the new members who are new to researching that after 10 years of researching I just did my first record of "hijos naturales." I'd stayed away from them because I felt it was sort of prying.. silly me! I"m working on 0439889 Jerez Zacatecas, hijos naturales and have found lots and lots of children listed as natural when their parents were actually married!

Comment

I've done a lot of research in the Italian births records and have found the some couples continued to have children listed as natuale. I wonder if it is because the parents were married in a civil ceremony but did not marry in the church. I followed the births of one couple for over twenty years. When their oldest daughter got married (both civil and religious), the parents were also married in the church. Notations were made in the margins of all their children that their parents were married in the church and that the children could be considered "recognized" children of the couple.

Subject: [Nuestros Ranchos] researching records

I just wanted to tell the new members who are new to researching that after 10 years of researching I just did my first record of "hijos naturales." I'd stayed away from them because I felt it was sort of prying.. silly me! I"m working on 0439889 Jerez Zacatecas, hijos naturales and have found lots and lots of children listed as natural when their parents were actually married!

I've decided not to include these children in the records stops others from finding them regardless of the circumstances of their birth. I also noticed that some are listed in the civil birth registration as father unknown but in the baptism record in "hijos naturales" the father and grandparents are usually listed, a real find. So, my advice is not to neglect any record that might give you the information you need to further your research.

good luck and welcome to all the new members of Nuestros Ranchos

Mineral de Pinos and Mineral de Angeles

Helo Everyone!

I am trying to find out where two places are.
Mineral de Angeles is one, is this now Noria de Angeles or are they two different places?
The other is Mineral de Pinos. I know it must be in Pinos, Zacatecas, I just want to know where and if it has another name now.

Yes, I am also researching in Pinos and Los Angeles, now called Noria de los Angeles. They are the same place.
Noria de los Angeles is (kinda a part of Pinos) Yes and no. It's annexed to Pinos, but Loas Angeles still has a city city status not really, Its hard to explain. It happened in the 1780's. What are your surnames there? Mine are Camino, Oviedo, Gallegos, Blanco, Cordova. I only know the most from the Camino side and the Oviedo.

Hello Daniel,

It is my Great Great Grandfather, Eligio Davila Araiza, son of Cornelio Davila and Maria del Rosario Araiza. In the marriage document from Ojuelos de Jalisco, Jalisco when he married my Great Great grandmother in 1834, it states that he has only lived in El Sitio for 11 years and that he comes from Mineral de Angeles. By his marriage he was born in 1814, but I can't find anything. Im still new to all this research and I'm certain I'm missing out on ways to find more info for lack of knowledge.

Thank you!

Rancho Calderón somewhere between Zapotlanejo and Tepatitlán Mexico

When I was very young (1940-50's) I spent time with my family in Jalisco on Rancho Calderón, which is reached by following the road between Zapotlanejo and Tepatitlán and leaving it about halfway, to reach the rancho which was pretty far from the highway. Rancho Calderón was in the Valle de Calderón and the adobe structures were quite ancient. I think I remember hearing that the main hacienda was built in the 1600's or 1700's. It was owned by the Romo (de Vivar) family but purchased in the early 20th century by Salvador Padilla. Salvador Padilla had married María Guadalupe "Lupe" Romo and purchased the failing rancho to "keep it in the family." Salvador and Lupe were probably born shortly after the turn of the century, since Lupe is still alive and in her late 90's. She was the daughter of Luis Romo (de Vivar), one of the sons of my GGGF José de los Santos Romo (de Vivar). I have no idea whether it was he or one of his sons who owned the rancho. In a sad turn of affairs, the

Rancho Calderon is listed in the Diccionario Geografico Historio y Bibliografico de Mexico. You can find the link in under the Geography section in the LINKS section of the site. It is listed under "Calderon." Unfortunately, it has very little information, simply stating at it is an hacienda in the municipality of Zapotlanejo in the first Canton (Guadalajara) of the state of Jalisco. The dictionary was published in 1870-1874.

There is an atlas published by the same man around the same time in which you might be able to find the rancho. You can find that atlas at the David Rumsey collection which is also in the links section under "Digital Map Collections" in the Geography Section.

he podido verificarlo. ¿Sería posible que tus ancestros decendieron de la
misma familia Gutiérrez?

Hay otra posibilidad: yo se que también habían aparceros en el rancho al
tiempo de la venta. Unos de ellos podría ser tu ancestro.

Thank you so much for the hints! It is very helpful to know that the Rancho
Calderón existed in the 1870's. I think I have roughly located the original
site of the hacienda--now at the bottom of the artificial lake formed by the
Presa Calderón just outside of Zatpotlanejo. Maybe I can scrape up a
long-lost Mexican relative and start tracing the ownership of the hacienda.
Most of my Mexican relatives came from that region—Encarnación, Ocotlán
(where my mother and her grandfather were born), Tepatitlán (where her
father was born), and Guadalajara.

I found the atlas you mentioned. Interesting! The older maps had
Tepatitlán southeast of Zapotlanejo, and it is actually northeast. Also,
the whole area, including the new lake and the city of Zabpotlanejo, is now
in the “Region of Acatic.” I’m beginning to get the hang of this
overlapping of regions, and the changing boundaries, but it makes things
pretty confusing.

I did some interesting reading about the famous battle at the Bridge over
the Río Calderón, where the Royalists routed Hidalgo’s army in 1810 and
delayed Mexican independence for 10 more years. It took place not far from
my family’s hacienda.

Thanks again for the help.

Familia Bueno en Tlaltenango y Colotlan

If anybody has any Bueno or Lopez Bueno ancestors in Tlaltenango or Colotlan in the late 1600s or early 1700s I would greatly appreciate sharing any information you have.

I am stuck on a couple of lineages that I suspect are related but have very sparse data on both of them:

Hey Arturo,
I basically have the same information that you do for Diego Lopez... But I have included it below just in case it helps.

1 Diego Lopez
* Sebastiana Arias
2 Antonio Lopez Arias (ch. 6 Nov 1696 in Jerez, zac)
* Antonia De Avila
3 Antonio Joseph Bueno Avila (ch. 7 Sep 1718 in Tlaltenango, Zac)
* Maria Efixenia De La O (ma. 27 Jun 1740 in Tlaltenango, Zac)
3 Maria Lucia Lopes
* Juan Anttonio De Campos (ma. 25 Aug 1746 in Tlaltenango, Zac)
3 Vicente Ferrer Bueno Davila (ch. 19 Nov 1731 in Tlaltenango, Zac)
2 Luis Lopez De Arias (ch. 12 Sep 1698 in Jerez, Zac)

I will take a look at my notes and see if I have any information on the family of Feliciana Lopez.

Talk to you later,
Angie Godina

My Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Joshua Goodson, grandson of Francisco Romo Villanueva. He was born 21 Apr 1923 in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico. He was married to Marcellina Ribeiro. I know he had at least two sisters, two brothers, and a nephew that are also from Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico and one of the sisters lived with her husband in Leon, GTO, Mexico. I am not sure if they are still living so I did not include their names. I do not even know the names of my great-grandparents. Most of what I know is from the writing on the back of photos that belonged to my grandfather, most of them dated in the 1950's, and little bits of information my mother could remember. I do not know anything about my family and am finding it very difficult to find any information about them. If anyone know any information or how I can get started, please let me know.

I am Raquel Ruiz. I have been researching my family story and ancestral roots
for almost 20 years now, although never spending as much time as I would like.
I research all four of my Mexican grandparent's lineages. Each is from a
different state. I have been most fortunate in my Ruiz-line research since
they have almost exclusively resided in only two parishes, Yahualica and
Cuquio, Jalisco. My ancestral Ruiz surnames thus far include Rubalcaba,
Perez, Lisarde, Limon, Quesada, Jauregui, Lopez, Delgadillo, Gomes, Rodriguez,
Casillas, Placencia and Garcia. The last seven are all from the town of
Soledad, while the others are primarily from Yahualica. I have a few families
of Ledesma and Gallo by way of alternate marriages.

My grandfather, Manuel Ruiz, was born in Cuquio. It is through his maternal
lineage that he is related to Agustin Yanez, (politician and author),his
second cousin, five years his junior. It was to Cuquio that my grandfather
took his wife and American-born children to live in 1945. My grandmother, a
native of Durango, died there a few months later. I accompanied my father and
two of his siblings to her gravesite and to Guadalajara in 1993, my father's
first return there after they had returned to the US 45 years earlier. As a
result of my research, on a subsequent visit we traveled to Yahualica.

A displaced Californian, I live in Massachusetts and actually do my research
at an LDS church in New Hampshire. I don't know anyone else that reseaches
their Mexican roots so was/am excited to come across this group. As soon as I
figure out how to partition out my Ruiz info from my paf file, I'll post my
info. Any suggestions?

Raquel:

There are two ways you can partition out your PAF file in a manner that would be appropriate for submission to your folder:

From the "Print Reports" menu item (the little printer icon) and then clicking the "Books" tab, you can print out an Ahenetafel report directly from PAF showing your relevant grandfather's ancestors. This also eliminates (I presume) all living people that might be in that PAF file. You can then print out the report to a RTF or preferably a PDF file and submit that file.

You can create a GEDCOM of your grandfather's ancestors using the "Export" menu item (the little disk with an out arrow). Click "Other GEDCOM" then select "Partial" under the "Filter" option. Click the "Select" button on the lower right and then find your relevant grandparent and select "All ancestral related" under the "Relationship Filter" option and then the "Select" button. Then Click "OK" and finally the "Export" button. We can then upload the GEDCOM to our GEDCOM database which other members can search.

looking for the CARLOS family tree in Zacatecas

Can anyone help me? I'm looking for info from my mother's ancestors (Maria Carlos) who were/are from Zacatecas, Zacatecas. I've managed to trace her ancestors to my GGGGF Eugenio Carlos born about 1775.

I've been studying the christening records from the late 1600's and early 1700's and found that in every instance the father's surname CARLOS DE GODOY ( or DE GODOI ) passes on to the child as only CARLOS. I speculate that, since it's common practice in Mexico to use your mother's surname last, perhaps DE GODOY or DE GODOI was the mother's surname. It's worth checking into, I think.
I found the film records for Jerez, Zavatecas.

The name "Carlos de Godoy" in Western Mexico is what is called a composed name. There were clearly people with this name as early as the late 1500s in Sinaloa and the Juan Carlos de Godoy who is the progenitor of the surnames Carlos and Godoy in Jerez was likely related to these earlier Carlos de Godoys from Sinaloa, though those of us looking into this have no definitely proof.

The name Carlos de Godoy was likely composed in Mexico as there do not appear to be any early passenger records of anybody with this name, but there were a number of Godoys among the early settlers and conquistadores of Nueva Galicia. In that early time, the standard surname custom used in Mexico today (paternal surname followed by maternal surname) was in no way a convention. Often children would take the mother's surname, often the father's and even sometimes a grandparent's name not used by either of their parents. Depended on many factors, i.e. importance of mother's family vs. father's family, need to propogate a name in a family, namesakes, i.e. a child being named for a grandparent (including the surname).

In some cases, where both parents' families were important, a name would become composed with both parents names being used, which is likely what happened in this case. Often the names were written simply as Carlos because priests unfamiliar with the full name dropped the second half. The IGI and VRI databases online often have incorrect or incomplete transcriptions where the transcriber leaves out part of the surname (perhaps assuming it is a maternal surname).

Later, (particularly after Independence) such composed surnames were very much associated with Spanish families which had become persona non grata and so people dropped parts of their surnames to "normalize" them and perhaps be less conspicous, so some Carlos de Godoy became Carlos and some became Godoy.

Do you have any idea as to the location where Eugenio was born or what year he and Michaela Garcia were married?
