Estrataficaion de la Sociedad en Nueva Espana

Hola Bill...

I would point you both to the story of the negro Yanga in Veracruz... he succesfully fought the Spaniards for the freedom of his people... because Yanga was helped at times by various Mixtec & Totonac peoples.. the Spanish decided to grant Yanga's people their freedom and raise them above the Natives in the Caste system.

Let me point you in the direction of the "Pinturas de Castas" which were the tool used to enforce the Social Hierarchy. One thing you will note is that there are two distinctions for Native Mexicans:

a) Indio(a) you can see them depicted in Noble clothing. They are really referring to the descendants of Pre-Hispanic nobility which were largely given the same status in Spanish life. In fact, in you Spain there is still a nobiliary title known as Duke de Moctezuma which are descendants of Aztec nobility who were "invited" to Spain and spread throughout Europe... as well as descendants of La Malinche... and some highly accomplished Natives that weren't of Pre-Hispanic noble caste such as Marcos Cipac who painted the Virgin of Guadalupe image now sitting in the Basilica (considered by many art critics to be more or less equivalent to the level of the European masters of the time).

b) Meco(a) these are Native Mexicans of "uncivilized" tribes or of lower Pre-Hispanic caste.

So you can see that Indios were one rung above Mulatos, but Mulatos were a rung higher than Mecos.

Really think about this... not only did the Spanish create a wedge between Blacks & Natives... but they created multiple wedges between the Natives themselves.

If you want greater proof of the historical "caste supremacy" of Afro-Mexicans relative to Natives... you just have to analyze why Mexico had a Black president (Vicente "El Negro" Guerrero) 40 years before having its first & only indigenous president (Benito Juarez). It was only after the Mexican revolution, "La Raza Cosmica", the restoration of Chicen Itza & other ancient sites that Native Mexicans regained greater presitige than Afro Mexicans. In fact, Carlos Fuentes even elaborates on this them in "La Muerte de Artemio Cruz"

With regards to violence between Afro-Americans & Mexicans in the U.S.... if you go to South Central L.A. and do an ethnography of recent Mexican immigrants you will find that the vast majority have come from Oaxaca where today, there is great tension between the Afro-Mexican communities and their Zapotec, Mixtec & mestizo neighbors... I think alot of these tension is a historical holdover and does spill to the U.S. as many of these migrants are frankly speaken... quite racist & prejudiced towards Afro-Americans.

necesites.

Saludos,

Ricardo

A couple of "fun-facts"

On the "lighter" side:
Thanks to my primos here at NuestrosRanchos who helped me confirm my DE LEON family tree I was able to find a couple of "fun-facts".

1. Even though my parents were double-related as cousins., I was able to connect them (triple-cousins) to Martin de Enriqyes ( b. abt. 1675). My father Elias de Leon (1904-1999) is his direct 8th descendant (12 generations) and my mother Maria Carlos (1909-1992) is his 9th direct descendant (13 generations). Double Whammy! Am I my mother's equal cousin ????

Joseph:

That is amazing that you have been able to get that far back in your direct paternal lineage that quickly. I got stuck on that line in the 1750s, but have followed many others further back, including a couple that lead me back to Manuel de Leon and Josepha de Escobedo... which makes you my cousin... I suppose several times over.

I don't know if you have seen what I have on this family, but I can take you back at least one more generation to Manuel's parents who were Francisco de la Cruz and Catalina de Garibai. Manuel and Josepha were married in 1692 in Tlaltenango.

http://www.ramosfamily.org/nextgen/showmedia.php?mediaID=94&medialinkID…

Josepha is, I believe, the granddaughter of Francisco de Escobedo, founder of Hacienda de San Andres Astillero later known as Monte Escobedo. She was the daughter of a Captain Juan de Escobedo who appears in other historical documents as the son of Francisco... only confusion is that there may have been two Juan Escobedos so she may be the great-granddaughter.

Where is the original message from Joseph? I've tried looking on our
website for it and have somehow missed it. I'm interested in the
Escobedos, who intermarried with Saldivars and Denas in the late 1700s
and early 1800s in Jerez. Marge:)

Ok, now this is getting interesting , my gggrandmother was Quirina Saldivar Gomez married to Candelario Alvarado in Villa de Santiago , N.L. 1844 her father was Juan Jose Saldivar Rodrigues de Montemayor y Ayala and his father was Jose Gregorio Saldivar Rodriquez de Montemayor .

Thanks, Primo!
I'm been working on this for the last 10 years and if it hadn't been for NuestrosRanchos and all of my primos here, I wouldn't have gotten this far. After viewing several mirco-film these last few months (and confirming my suspicions) and with Joseph Puentes, Rosalinda Ruiz, Erlinda Castenon, you, and all the others I'd still be stuck. Of course, being 100 % retired now, I can devote 10 hours a day to that activity.

I copied your document and am presently studying it, thanks again!

Hi Joseph and Arturo ,

This week-end is the conference in the Mexican state of Coahula in the city of Ramos Arispe . I just wanted to ask you guys if you thought it might be a good idea to put the protocolos of Monterry and Saltillo in the Nuestros Ranchos web site for the use of following where the descendents from the three states went afterwards. As you know some them went to Coahuila and Nuevo Leon .

If you think it might help , I will give Mickey or Josie a copy and when they get back to the states they can mail it to you .

Luis Tiscareño de Molina

Bill,

Saludos,

Bill

Wasnt Luis' name just Luis de Molina? He later added the Tiscareño to represent where he came from the Villa de Tiscar. According to his pasaporte de la catálogo a Indias. HE came from TIscar. Molina is an ilustrious last name, coming from the King of Castilla. -Daniel

Raquel, I used this same lab for 3 dna tests and 1 mtda test, they cost abt $100.00, they were fast and answered any questions I had. I connected through the Gary Felix site so they could list my results in their program trying to find who our ancestors were in Mexico. We have a link in Nuestros Ranchos, check it out, it's facinating.

Compare the prices of getting your genealogy test directly through
FamilyTreeDNA and by getting the exact tests as part of the "Genealogy
of Mexico Surname DNA Project"
http://members.tripod.com/~GaryFelix/index63.htm

as part of that study you get a group discount but check to make sure as
it was quite a while back when I did mine and I'm not sure that this is
still the case.

Muchas gracias.

Saludos a todos.

Dear Christina:
Have you tried ancestry.com and looked for Sanchez Perales's border crossing? Sometimes if you are lucky it lists the exact address in Mexico. If there is a library nearby with a genealogy center then they may have ancestry.com free of charge. Some of the LDS history centers also have ancestry.com. You need to have a more specific area, so you are not searching all over the entire state. I could not find Sanchez, Margarito or Tranguilina in familysearch and I did a search of the LDS library catalog for Guanajuanto and did not come up with anything either. Is Guanajuanto the correct spelling?

crossing? Sometimes if you are lucky it lists the exact address in Mexico.
If
there is a library nearby with a genealogy center then they may have
ancestry.com free of charge. Some of the LDS history centers also have
ancestry.com. You need to have a more specific area, so you are not
searching
all over the entire state. I could not find Sanchez, Margarito or
Tranguilina
in familysearch and I did a search of the LDS library catalog for
Guanajuanto
and did not come up with anything either. Is Guanajuanto the correct
spelling?

Now what were we saying about Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes

are his novels? Are they worth reading to get a sense of what really was

Dear Christina:
Have you tried ancestry.com and looked for Sanchez Perales's border
I could not find Sanchez, Margarito or
Tranguilina

Guanajuanto
and did not come up with anything either. Is Guanajuanto the correct
spelling?

Yes that is the correct spelling. From what others are telling me he must have lived in the capital city of Guanajuanto.

Searching for Obituaries?

Does anyone have a good source for old newspaper Obituaries? I am looking for an obituary that would have been posted about six years ago.

Also, has anyone ever used this service:

Just a thought. but Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness:
http://www.raogk.org/listing.htm has folks all over that will go to the
city in question and either go to a graveyard and take photos or
possibly look up obituaries from the local libraries microfilms. Or you
could just call the city in question and request a specific obituary if
you have the date.

You mean the Visigoths coming to Spain during the middle ages, right?

The Celts, according to this article (and others I have read) had settled
in Spain even prior to the Romans who came around 200 B.C.

SORRY! YOU're RIGHT THE "CELTS" WERE IN SPAIN BUT NOT AS CELTS. THERE WAS A GERMANIC TRIBE THAT I ALSO DESCEND FROM; NAMED THE SUEVI, WHO SETTLED IN GALICIA, ESPAñA. THE SUEVI ARE IN A SENSE THE CELTS. CORRECT IF IM WRONG ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA, THE CELTS TRAVELED TO FRANCE AND SETTLED WITH THE FRANKS AND OTHERS, A PART OF THEM BROKE OFF AND WENT TO SPAIN AND WERE THE SUEVI. ITS A BIT CONFUSING, BUT SINCE THE VISIGOTHS WERE THE DOMINANT ONES IN SPAIN THEY EASILY MIXED WITH ALL SUEVI AND CELTS, AND BASICALLY WIPED THEM OUT AND CONQUERED THEM. FROM 500AD OR SO THEY WERE ALL KNOWN AS NOW VISIGOTHS. THE ENGLISH ALL DESCEND FROM CELTISH ORIGIN. THE FIRST PERSON TO EVER USE MéNDEZ AS A SURNAME WAS THE CHILDREN OF HERMENEGILDO MAUREGáTEZ (THIS SURNAME NO LONGER EXSITS), cONDE DE CELANOVA.
THE REASON WHY I HIGLIGHTED THESE TOP LETTERS. ARE SPELLED MENDO, WHICH IS A GERMANIC NAME MEANING WISE OR PHILISOPHICAL. HE WAS GRANDCHILD OF THE KING OF ASTURIAS, ALFONSO I, THAT IS HOW I DESCEND FROM MANY OF MY LINES TO ALFONSO I, THAT IS WHY IM SAYING IF ANYONE HAS THE -EZ IN THEIR LAST NAME THEY ARE RELATED. ALL THESE PATRONíMICOS, IT WAS VISIGOTH CUSTOM TO ADD THE -EZ, IZ OR AZ OR OZ AFTER THE FATHERS NAME TO SIGNIFY CHILD OF...THERE WAS ANOTHER FORM OF PATRONíMICO BASED ON THE FATHER'S NAME THEY WOULD JUST GIVE THE CHILD THE FATHER NAME AS THE CHILD LAST NAME. LIKE kING gARCíA i HAD KIDS HIS DAUGHTER WAS JUANA GARCíA, PRINCESA DE PAMPLONA. OBVIOUSLY THE GARCíAS ARE RELATED. THE ONLY TYPES OF SURNAMES THAT ARENT OR KNOWN TO BE RELATED ARE CARACTERíSTICAS, LIKE joSé cALVO OR jUAN dELGADO, LIKE THOSE. THE FATHERS FISRT NAME CALLED, NOMOPATRON, LIKE GARCíA WASN'T SO POPULAR BECAUSE IT WASNT GERMAN. ALFONSO i DESCENDANTS CAN BE RODRíGUEZ, méNDEZ, GUTIéRREZ, GONZáLEZ, MUNóZ, NúñEZ, AND SO ON...FOR YOU MENDOZAS OUT THERE. HURTADO IS THE OTHER UNPOPULAR FORM I WAS TALKING ABOUT. HURTADO WAS A MAN'S NAME. YáñEZ IS AN INTERESTING ONE IT WAS CREATED UNTIL THEY WENT TO PORTUGAL. ABOUT 1100 OR SO. IM NOT SAYING ALL THESE LAST NAMES WERE 1ST COUSINS, THAT IS HOW IT STARTED. BUT LATER IT SPREAD.
IF YOU TAKE A GONZALEZ PERSON AND EVENTUALLY KEEP GOING UNTIL THE MIDDLE AGES YOU WILL FIND HIS DIRECT ANCESTOR ON HIS GONZALEZ LINE WILL GO BACK TO ALFONSO i, IF SEEN IT IN ALL LAST NAMES THAT ARE PATRONíMICO. i CAN GO ON ON ABOUT THIS SUBJECT. ITS SO FASCINATING, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF TIME, I HOPE THIS HELPS ESPERANZA! -dANIEL méNDEZ DEL cAMINO

You are right of course, the Germanic invasion of Spain is clear, however
there also appears to be other inhabitants to the Iberian peninsula that
predates the Germans, such as the Celts, who the Greeks defined as those that lived
in the most westerly part of Europe.

Having said that, there seems to be evidence that the Celts had traveled
throughout Europe even before Spain....being the first to spread the
Indo-European race and language...which further contributes to the confusion.

Nevertheless, there is no denial that both of our realities are
correct....as is the reality of African Moorish ancestry of Spain...whom are believed to
have arrived along with the Celts initially....and later on of course, after
the Visgoths.

History is fascinating...isn't it....especially as pertains to our
geneology....

With any luck you might find his parents were still living in the area as
well as his siblings or other relatives. The city of Guanajuato has 364
pages of census records. You do have to register, but there is no charge.

Hi, I am presently indexing 1930 Census records for Guanajuato. Anyone can volunteer to do this work. It will become available to the entire world for free when the project is complete. And it will include all of Mexico for the 1930 Census. If anyone is interested visit an LDS Genealogy Library and you can be part of this important project. I have been doing indexing from my computer at home, after I downloaded the software.

Spanish Armada Hurtado Mendoza

I am hoping I can once again request from this group some information. You have all been so helpful in the past. This is in honor of St. Paddy's day....the Spanish/Irish connection.

I spend my genealogical time between the Irish (mine) and the Spanish (my husband's) I constantly tease him that sooner or later I will find that we are related. We have some similar traits and sometimes that is good, but other times it causes conflicts. Anyway, I am descended from the O'Neill family in Northern Ireland on my maternal side. My great grandfather's name was Hugh O'Neill and my grandmother used to tell us tales of the great Hugh O'Neill. We always thought it was ...you know....just fairy tales. Well, although somewhat embellished, some of her stories are in rare historical books. Anyway, out of curiousity, I started researching the Spanish Armada. Hugh O'Neill (not my great grandfather, but the famous one) was linked to this. Then I found out that many ships from the Armada were

It wouldn't be too far a stretch to find links between the Irish and the
Spanish, as the Celtics settled in the northern part of Spain. There is an
additional link between the Irish and Spanish in that the Moors inhabited both
areas...which resulted in the "Black Irish"....many thinking that the last name
Moore comes from these roots. I am sending you an interesting link, but I am
sure that once you go down this road of research, you will be in a
fascinating discovery that you and your husband may be more than twice related!

I suggest going to the PARES website. I think it's included in the Ranchos links. I'm not an expert on the subject. I have read that the Archivo General De Simancas was used extensively in a book I have on the subject. Garrett Mattingly wrote "The Armada" in 1959 and used the archive above. Bernardino de Mendoza was the Spanish ambassador at the French court before and after the Armada was launched. He seems to have been one of the forces behind sending the fleet. On page 369 the author writes:
"Two myths should, perhaps, be dealt with here: the story, spread by the English almost from the Armada year, that the Spaniards who came ashore were spontaneously murdered by the Irish for their clothes and arms and jewelry, and the legend, persistent in the west, that black eyes and hair, aquiline profiles and swarthy cheeks show the blood of the Spaniards who came ashore from the Armada ships and stayed. Not infrequently the wild Irish did relieve their unbidden guests of their valuables. Perhaps, now and then, a throat was cut as well. But there is only one recorded instance of the killing of Spanish castaways by Irish not directly in English pay, and it aroused general reprobation. Usually the Irish sheltered the Spaniards, supplied their necessities, and, whenever they could, helped them out of the realm. Several hundred Spaniards did so escape, mostly to Scotland. They thought they had left few if any of their countrymen behind. Perhaps, here and there, some
castaway found a roof and a wife in a friendly village, but not enough, surely, to have any effect on the look of the people as a whole. If one sees, time and again, the same physical types in Connaught and in Galicia, it must be for some other reason."

Your other question is about possible genetic connections between the people of Eire and Spain. I don't recall exactly where I read it (during undergraduate years?) but there is an ancient sea current connecting northern Spain with the British Isles area. A very strong ocean current can carry a raft from the Cantabrian Sea (el mar Cantabrico)to the west of Ireland. This current has made it possible for people from Galicia to sail to Ireland and back. For example, the last viceroy of Mexico was named Juan O'Donoju. His great grandfather took the family to live in Ireland. Another ancestor of his brought the family back to Spain. It was not uncommon for folks to travel from Galicia north to Ireland. I think you can find a map of ocean currents in the Cantabrian Sea on Wikipedia. It's no longer called that. I think it's now called the Bay of Biscay because of its proximity to Viscaya.

To make a long story short- good luck in your hunt for names.

I went in to the English translated page of PARES and did a search on Armada date 1588 and it produced no results. Am I doing something incorrectly?

Also here is the paper from Hiram Morgan on the Spanish Armada and the Irish. At the end is the translated excerpt from one of the survivors.

Also, here is the website with Sir Francis Drake's account:

Both quite interesting.

I'm Spanish and I was always told that Spaniards are descended from the Visigoths not the Celts. The Visigoths were a Germanic Tribe that Came from Germany by the Rhine River. Celts and Goths are related because they came along with all the other Germans before crossing through the Caucaus Mountains. This is the time around the Bible genealogy of NOah and such. Would be key evidence. I think Cacausians is a term from the Cacaus mts. All Spaniards are descend from Alfonso I, Rey de ASturias, AT LEAST by then. Here's an interesting theory, in the time of ALfonso I the nobility was 90% of the total population. I think that's why Spain gets too much criticism of being the easiest country to join the nobility. All you had to do is serve in war. It was mostly on militarism. The poorest man could have fought his way up to Duke. A perfect example would be the Dukes of Alba. They werent the richest people. but eventually became one of the most important Spanish families. I made a hypothesis
that since only 10% were "peasants in Spain." The harsh conditions would have wipe them out, but still leave some. I do believe that all people in the new world and Spain are related. If you think about there are only a handful of Spanish surnames. It probably around less than a thousand. Especially los Patronímicos. The -ez suffix. Rodríguez, Méndez, González, so on...(-ez is German.) The ez people are all related. They were from the Visigoths nobles from Germany. -I think I should keep it short. Yes, I do descend from Lope about 5-7times! No surprise! I do not descend from the Romos, but am obviously related through marriage! P.S. Im learning German! I started on Sat. so far it's fun. Hopefully I become fluent in Deutsch. I have my genealogy back to the Visigoths if you want to take a look at it. All those Germanic tribes' history are pretty interesting. There was an article on Ancestry.com that stated all Europeans are descended wither from CHarlamagne or Mohammad. Or even both! If you don't want to wait on me, you can easily find João I, genealogy and look at all the cool ancestors we now share. -Tu primo, Daniel (Mendelssuehn von der Kamin)<<<<

PARES and Spanish Armada

Out of curiosity I went to the Archivos de Simanca and typed in 'armada'. I received a response asking for a more detailed/specific request. Remember there was more than one armada sent against England. The survivor you mention is named Cuellar. He was one of the senior officers of the operation. You could query his name. Include the date with the word 'armada'. I have never researched the Simanca archives. It really isn't one of my interests. Good luck....

Dear David:
The survivor account from Cuellar is not what I am actually looking for. I just want a listing of all the names that may have spent some time being sheltered in Ireland before being smuggled or ransomed back to Spain. I still could not get anything off of PARES and my Spanish is limited.
