John and other Nuestros Ranchos members,

You are all cordially invited to attend the next meeting in Northern
California. The meeting is scheduled as follows:

Date of Event: May 17, 2008
Event time: 10:30 am - 2:30 pm
Location: Raley's Event Center
4900 Elk Grove Blvd.
Elk Grove, CA

Our group is in the process of formalizing its structure. We are filing as
a non-profit organization called "Nueva Galicia Genealogical Society". We
hope to be a complementary group to Nuestros Ranchos and not to duplicate its
purpose or information. I maintain the distribution list, so if you want to
be notified of future events all you need to do is send me a direct e-mail and
I will add you to the list.

We do not want to restrict membership to Nueva Galicia researchers only and
any serious researcher is welcome to attend our meetings. We will be
adopting Bylaws for our group at the upcoming meeting and will be developing a
website.

Some of our past activities include: have gone on field trips as a group,
discuss research techniques, held picnics, reviewed books, etc. We plan on
setting up a booth at the Festival de la Familia which is held yearly in
Sacramento, CA. Our meetings are lively and is made up of some very talented
individuals. One of our long range goals is to have Joseph and/or Arturo attend
one of our meetings.

John, I will add you to my distribution list and I hope to see you and other
primos and primas at our next meeting. An RSVP one week prior is
appreciated since the meeting room is small, but if necessary I could try to find a
larger room to accomodate everyone.

Southern Calif Meeting in June

Hi John
Please keep us posted on a So. Calif meeting. Even thou we are from the Sacramento area, we plan on being down in So. Calif for a wedding on June 28th. Saturday day would not work for us, but a Friday evening, Saturday evening, or a Sunday would work. Even June 21st week-end would work for us since we hope to meet Rich's cousin in San Diego and that date is unsure, since we have to wait for his ship USS Cleveland to come in ( approx Jun 24th).

Gilbert,
Don't expect to find a great deal of information in the Mexican cemeteries. Many graves don't have headstones and some headstones don't have names. The cemeteries are not maintained the way they are in the states. Best way I've found to search is still through the films archived by the LDS Church, order the film for defunciones / Death records and scroll through one record at a time. Most of these films are from the Catholic church's archives.

Alicia is right about the cemeteries in Mexico. My wife is from Teocaltiche
and we were there, visiting, last November. The cemetery is easy to find,
it is in the South part of town, probably about 1/4 of a mile from the
Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores, which is right in the middle of
town. Teocaltiche's cemetery is fairly well kept and visited by many people
since it is so close to town.
My wife's sister owns the travel agency, "Agencia de Viajes Ramon" and if
you need any information she will probably be more than happy to help you.
The people in Teocaltiche are very friendly, I am sure you'll enjoy your
trip.

Alicia & John...

Thank you both for your thoughts on the cemetery in Teocaltiche. My father
is buried at Fort Hancock, Texas (just east of El Paso about 60 miles) and
there are many weathered wood crosses marking unnamed graves. When we return
from Mexico, I will order a couple more LDS films for further Teocaltiche
research.

John, do you have the telephone number for your sister-in-law's "Agencia de
Viajes Ramon"?

Sincerely,
Gilbert

Gilbert and Ranchos Members,

Check out the TX Gen Web Project, this site has quite alot of info on Texas cemeteries and other information. If you look under El Paso cemeteries you will find Smelertown AKA La Calavera cemetery. My cousin Margaret and I have worked on this database and are in the process of uploading more data. We walked the cemetery and photographed at least half of tombs. Talk about old wooden crosses,it's an old western graveyard covered in soot, sand and Chamiso bushes. It's a beauty and I love it up there in the shadow of ASARCO smokestack and nestled between the Franklin Mountains and the Rio Grande.
We also walked and photographed some of Evergreen Cemetery in Central El Paso. A good contact person is Doris Harrison if you have any questions. She is the Web Master and a wonderful genealogists.

Salvador Quintero Del Rio

I have met and read persons Jewish Ashkenazim(sp?) that went to South America in many locations before, during, and after WW II assimilated into their new countries, those I know kept their faith, but it is highly conceivable if in concentration camps they kept their huge secret. I out different have read about different detention camps, I am no expert but Germany I believe was the only tattoo of your description. it was mostly their families that helped them escape or relocate, The Nazi's were helped by the Catholic Church to relocate to South America. You may want to try Holocaust Survivor web sites to see if you find similar stories.

They could have been Sephardic Spanish Jews.? It is strongly believed and evidence indicates that the founders of Monterrey NL were of Jewish origin.
Others that were put in concentrations camps were Romani (Gypsies) and Turks I believe!? I think they were given numbers as well.

Thank you for the advice. I was told that my grandfather (Salvador Quintero
Del Rio) was born in the year 1900 in Tuxpan Jalisco. I am still trying to
find out the exact date of his birth and the names of his parents. I know
that at some point he married my grandmother in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and
stayed there for the rest of his life. I am not sure if I believe he was
born in Mexico at all to be honest, mostly because of the tattoos he and his
mother carried on their arms. They never spoke of them and hid them, so my
father does not even know what the numbers are, or how many there were.
>From what I understand it was some sort of branding and I don't know much of
anything yet but that to me seemed as if they were in some sort of camp, I
don't think that camps like that existed in Mexico but I could be wrong.
His and her features were very European, according to my mother. I read
some where that there are many Jews in Mexico, especially in Nuevo Leon and
Jalisco, that I did not know and makes wonder if they may have been
imigrants? I don't know if that kind of record would exist or where to even
look for such a thing. I will post more information when I find it. Any
guidance on where to look/search is greatly appreciated. I am planning a
visit to a Latter Day Saints Family Center, even though nothing came up in
their online search.

So far this is what I know:

In 1900 Salvador Quintero Del Rio was born in Jalisco (sepculated due to the tattoos on his arm).
In 1934 my Father was born in Monterrey, NL (first born)
I can not even guesstimate the time Salavador might have married my grandmother (Paula Gamez, born in Coahuila, don't know date yet) because of stories I have heard of her having several miscarriages and the fact that Paula was a widow when she married Salvador, but I am planning an interrogation soon to see when they were married and where. He and his mother were very light skinned.

I speculate considering the tattoos on Salvadors and his mothers arm, that he and his mother (and possibly father, who is never spoken of) might have been immigrants. He did not have an accent when speaking spanish, at least no one noticed or mentioned it, which makes me believe one of two things. If he was an immigrant, he arrived at a very early age and/or he came from country whose language is similar enough to Spanish that he and his family caught on quick, such as Spain, Italy etc...

I agree with Helyn. For me it easier, to find clues if you know what it is you are looking for if the family doesn't know or are not willing to talk. For me it was a shape of a scar that had significant meaning. That lead to a secret knight order and then on to conversos which interacted on both sides of the fence, so to speak. There is a magnificent story there, I am sure. Good hunting. mari

I came upon the above mentioned site, and located some Pueblos/Ranchos that I had not been able to locate, not only in our area of research, but throughout the Mexican Republic. I was specifically looking for some locations that were mentioned in records from the early 1800's.

This is a great resource site for researchers.

Hi Esther, can you tell me who and what dates you have for Portezuelo, Zapotlan del Rey and Sayula? I've found these towns in the records for Tamazula and Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman. I have some records from these town but not the others.

My Gutierrez family maried into the Ornelas family and they lived in the Tamazula area, my Gutierrez and Mendez family also lived in Portezuelo in the late 1800's. My records for Zapotlan El Rey and Sayula are from mostly the mid to late 1700's.

Daniel (Mendez del Camimo), does this Ornelas family belong to your Ornelas family?

I am very excited to be in this genealogy group. I have been reading all your e-mails and I like learning about the history. Thank you! I was born in Jamay, Jalisco and came to the U.S. when I was 6 years old. My history knowledge is not good but it is never too late to learn.

What I know of my great-grandmother: Maria Guadalupe Vaca Velazquez was born 12 DEC 1882 (However, the date may have been changed because she did not want it known that she was older than Great grandpa Lorenzo Gutierrez.) She was born in Portezuelo, Jalisco. She died 11 MAY 1965. My great grandfather's family were from Ocotlan, Jalisco but I am not sure whether he was born in Ocotlan or Portezuelo. A live relative told me that he was born in Portezuelo and I would like to know for sure. They were married in Jamay 26 November 1902. My Great grandpa died March 1939.

His father was Secundino Gutierrez married to Maria Juana Ruiz on 5 SEP 1855 in Zapotlan del Rey, Jalisco. His family were also from there.

Rosendo Vaca married Anastacia Velazquez at Portezuelo, Jalisco. Rosendo was shot and killed before my great grandma was born. Anastacia later remarried with some one named Cerda. I have other details but I am visiting my dauther in Virginia at the present time.

Maria Dolores Davila Diaz was born in Sayula, Jalisco around 1869. Her father was Teofilo Diaz, born 9 JAN 1834, in Sayula. Hw was married 25 SEP 1854. Her mother was Maria Davila. I have her brothers and sisters but again I have the info at home.

I am happy to share whatever information I have.

Dear Esther-

It is hard to keep up with all the emails one receives
when on vacation. I read this one with interest
today.

I do not know where Sayula is because my husband does
not apparently have any ancestors from there. I did
see the information sent to you by Jonathan. Seems
like some of the area you are seeking information
from, is in the same places that I have search in
years past.

On one of our outings, we stopped by La Barca. It was
on a Sunday and in the plaza, people were voting for
local leaders. We went by the church, which is off to
the side and not on the plaza square.

On our way to the Guadalajara airport on Friday, we
passed through Jamay and I can report that Lake
Chapala does have adequate water at this time. I have
visited there in the past when the water level was
quite low.

I have also done research in Ocotlan but never in
Zapotlan del Rey.

Looking forward to getting together with you on your
return to California.

Sincerely,

Daniel,
After you sent me the information of my 5th generation grandfather, I found a brother of his. I visited the Genealogy Library in Bonita and with the help from Patricia B. Godinez and some films that are on permanent status from La Barca and Portezuelo I found the info and also found Antonio Lopez' father and mother. Thank you for guiding me to where I am now! I am really excited about this!

Jonathan, since you are the expert can you tell us if there were two Portezuelos, one in the district of Tamazula? My ancestors lived there and the records are in the Tamauzula records. Did they just travel or are there actually 2 locations with the same name.

thank you, Linda in Everett

Jonathan, you are too modest! You have a wonderful reputation for the integrity of your work and I know you've worked countless hours in researching and sharing what you've learned. I'm really glad you're part of this group!

I tried accessing your site a couple of times and couldn't get past your home page, can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I did contact you before since I have Rolon ancestors from Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman as does your wife but we never made a family connection.

thank you for sharing the Portezuelo information.

Dear Researchers--

We just arrived home from a trip to Jalisco, Mexico.
We stayed most of the time in Santa Rita, Ayotlan.
However we did make some day trips out to a few
villages in the Atotonilco el Alto municipio, and to
the town of Capilla de Guadalupe.

In order to reach those places and to go on a better
road, we went the back way from Santa Rita and passed
the village of Portesuelo in the La Barca municipio.
A number of years ago, we went to Portezuelo (it can
be spelled either way in the old records) because some
of our Godinez ancestors lived there.

I was surprised to see that there were so many other
places called Portesuelo in Jalisco. I am glad we can
share information with one another and learn more.

Sincerely,
Patricia Diane Godinez
San Diego

Yes, you did!!! I am so excited. This is a wonderful way to start my day! Thank you!

My Grandmother's Background: Carmen Ornelas Born 28 NOV 1900, Guadalajara, Jalisco. Died 7 NOV 1996; Her father was Doroteo Ornelas, Guanajuato; I don't have anything else for him.
Her mother was Rosa Cortez born in Santa Cruz de Astilleros, Jalisco; Carmen had a brother named Heriberto who married Margarita Hernandez, Alfredo who married Soledad Gonzalez and Adela who resided in Chicago for many years. I have other info but not with me at this time.
Rosa had brothers and sisters as follow: Guadalupe, Maria Nestora, Refugio, Baldomero, Savas, Casimira (7 MAR 1867),Maria Merced, 24 SEP 1871. This info was given me verbally by my mother, so I don't know how accurate it might be. Rosa's father was Santos Cortez, Santa Cruz, Jalisco and mother Leocadia Garcia de Leon also from Santa Cruz.

I will try to get info on Secundino Gutierrez from Zapotlan del Rey, Jalisco, I have about 8 brothers/sisters for him but not with me at this time. His father was Antonio Gutierrez and his mother Maria de Jesus Navarro.

I hope this helps. Thank you, Esther

Im 100% I found your ancestor Rafael Lopez.

Wow! Well Jonathan.. I guess finished my job. He did a lot! for you. Anyway, wow! I can relate you
about the class thing. In my ancestry you'll hardly find any other than SPanish or European blood.
I have like 1 black and 2 or 3 indian lines. My mother's family went to the extreme! They cared so much
for "pure blood" that's what they called it. THey married inside their on family. Until this day 2008, we still
do that, I really don't want to marry my cousin! They believed very strange things. All my mom's ancestors
are related until 1750 or so. I find Theodoro García de León about 17 times on my tree! My mother's family owened
an hacienda, i think that's way they only mixed with other land owners. I think it was my grt gf Francisco Méndez
that didnt approve of my gm Cuca because she was mestiza. Her father was spanish (white skin) our family for
some reason dont call people Mexican, we still call them Negro, Mestizo or Spanish or Indio, not sure why. and her
Elena de Moran was also mestiza. My gf came out oliveish color. Im not sure why but when someone marries other
than European blood they make sure their descendants to hide their lineage of other than Euro. I didnt now I was
Black! Lol! My friends tell me "im whiter than a white person" LOL! I think it's fun learning your other lineages especially
the Indian one from Moctezuma. So many descendants! -Daniel Méndez del Camino

Luz Montejano's Book

Hello Everyone,I live in Claremont ,Calif. about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.Does anybody know what local library carries Luz Montejano 's book in my area? Thank you

A college or university library might also have a copy. If so, you might be able to use it in the library, even though you are not enrolled as a student (that is the case with the local nearby university where I live). Call the library and inquire about the policy regarding non-student use of the library.

Put in your county and the word library on google. Then go to card catalogue under title put the name of the book or you can search author. If it is in any library it will tell you which one and if it is a permenant houseing or transferable to one nearest you. Must have a library card to transfer. goodluck

Gutierrez y de La Torre

Hola to you!

I spoke to my father today and he told me that the Gutierrez family had a Rancho El Monte in Acatic. My De La Torre's had tha Rancho El Sauz. I have been to Acatic, Tepa, etc visiting family when I was a youngster. My dad also said that his parents were married in the Church in Acatic. I had an Aunt Clementina from Acatic. In my fathers family my dad and one uncle took the last name Gutierrez, my other uncle took the name De La Torre. I have pictures of Rancho El Sauz, or what was left of it taken in 1980 the last time I was in Acatic. My Aunt Esperanza said all of the land has been sold off probably in 2000. I know absolutely nothing about my family other than the pedigree I posted. My dad is 71 and cannot remember much, but, I am going to see my Aunts this summer in Dixon Ca and will try to see if they remember anything.

Dear Cindy:
I did not see a Clementina De La Torre in my records, but then 1873
might have been a little too early for her. I have asked my in-laws about
their family and they always say oh, I can't remember much, but then if you
just listen while they talk, they end up telling you little clues about your
families past. Also, have you looked at the border crossings on
ancestry.com? Sometimes who families, extended families, crossed together.
It usually describes the person's physical appearance and sometimes has
pictures. Really neat. Also, the family search labs has the 1930 Mexican
Census. I do not know about the Acatic records, but it is worth a try.
Good luck.

Dear Maureen,

My father was the first one of his family to come to the states, that was in 1956. His father died when he was 7 and his mother died in 1964 in Acatic. His 2 brothers followed here, and my Aunts only live here part time, and that only started a few years ago. My fathers cousins are here, but I know nothing about them other than they came in the 1970-1980's. I am hoping to get more info this summer, but, I have to keep my fingers crossed on that one.

Dear Cindy:
Then the Mexican Census in 1930 will be what you might want to look at.
It may show your mother's and father's families. From there you will know
the grandparents names. Also looking at the LDS microfilms if available for
your mother's and father's births may also list the grandparents on both
sides. I put in Acatic Mexico in familysearch. I am not sure if this is
your Acatic or if there is another Acatic in Mexico. You may want to find
out then order the microfilms, if this is your Acatic. See links below:

Dear Maureen,

My father was the first one of his family to come to the states, that was in
1956. His father died when he was 7 and his mother died in 1964 in Acatic.
His 2 brothers followed here, and my Aunts only live here part time, and
that only started a few years ago. My fathers cousins are here, but I know
nothing about them other than they came in the 1970-1980's. I am hoping to
get more info this summer, but, I have to keep my fingers crossed on that
one.

Good luck.

Hola to you!

I spoke to my father today and he told me that the Gutierrez family had a
Rancho El Monte in Acatic. My De La Torre's had tha Rancho El Sauz. I have
been to Acatic, Tepa, etc visiting family when I was a youngster. My dad
also said that his parents were married in the Church in Acatic. I had an
Aunt Clementina from Acatic. In my fathers family my dad and one uncle took
the last name Gutierrez, my other uncle took the name De La Torre. I have
pictures of Rancho El Sauz, or what was left of it taken in 1980 the last
time I was in Acatic. My Aunt Esperanza said all of the land has been sold
off probably in 2000. I know absolutely nothing about my family other than
the pedigree I posted. My dad is 71 and cannot remember much, but, I am
going to see my Aunts this summer in Dixon Ca and will try to see if they
remember anything.

Hi,

I, too, have Gutierrez and de la Torre from Tepatitlan. I am a
Romero. My paternal grandparents were Castulo Romero and Sophia de la
Torre. My maternal grandparents were Jose de la Torre and Elena
Romero. My paternal great grandparents were Manuel Romero and Maria
Marcelina de la Torre. Marcelina's parents were Fernando de la Torre
and Maria Gutierrez, c. 1830. Manuel Romero's parents were Serapio
Romero and Petra Pena. All were born in Tepatitlan.

Great uncle's & aunts include Adolpo, Leopold, and Beatriz de la
Torre. On the Romero side there was Marcos, Serapio, Jose, Maria
Luisa, Maria de Jesus, and Abigail Romero.

I have all the right names and location, but that's all I have. I
don't know the ranches they lived on. Other names in the family are
Navarro, Franco, Martin, Lopez, Gonzalez.

I also have a picture of my father in Guadalajara with his cousin
Esperanza. I haven't figured out how she fits in.

My father was born in 1907 in Tepatitlan and came to the US in 1923.
He, his brother and sister are all dead so I can't ask them
questions. I don't know any relatives in Mexico or other parts of
the US except my first cousins, and they are as much in the dark as I
am.

Do any of my family members fit into your families? I have my gedcom
posted on NuestrosRanchos, but it needs updating.

I found a Couple in the same time peiord that of Juan Tovar, Lord of Berlanga and Constanza Enriquez. If these are Elvira's parents, not only would she be a cousin to the Dukes of Frias but this would also answer a long question that the society has had. Im pretty positive that these are her parents but no proof. Hello Ronnie, all info is correct Ill send you what ive discovered about the nobility and jewish of this family in another email. for noe heres some history and their family and lucas' parents and genealogy. Hope it will extend a lot! -Daniel

VÁSQUEZ de LARA
The maternal ancestry of José Vásquez de Lara (ONMF: 306) is the only New Mexico lineage that extends as far back as the early 1400s in Spain. This lineage is based on the work of Mexican genealogists Mariano González Leal, José Ignacio Dávila Garibi, and Jesús Amaya. However, it was the research of Ophelia Márquez that provided the critical information to link the family of José Vásquez de Lara with the genealogical research of González Leal, Dávila Garibi, and Amaya.
As documented by Chávez, José Vásquez de Lara was a native of the Villa de los Lagos (aka Santa María de los Lagos) in Nueva Galicia, a son of Miguel Vásquez de Lara and Juana de Alcalá (ONMF: 306). He was married in 1694 with María Magdalena Baca. Their daughter María Vásquez Baca became the wife of Diego Padilla (ONMF: 253). This couple had eight known children and are common ancestors for many Hispano New Mexicans.
Paternal Ancestry:
Miguel Vásquez de Lara, a native of Jalostotitlán, Nueva Galicia, was married circa 1659 with Juana de Alcalá y Mendoza, native of Tlazazalca, Michoacán, Nueva España (her ancestry given below).
Miguel was a son of Cristóval Vásquez de Lara, native of the villa of Santa María de los Lagos, and María Ortiz, native of Santa María de los Lagos who died 9 January 1684 at Los Lagos.
Cristóval Vásquez de Lara was a son of Martín Vásquez Zermeno, a native of Mexico City who died at Santa María de los Lagos, and Ana García de Lara (aka Ana García de Miranda).
Martín Vásquez Zermeno was a son of Juan Vásquez and Elvira Gil de Lara, residents of Mexico City according to research by Jaime Holcombe.

Maternal Ancestry:
Juana de Alcalá y Mendoza, wife of Miguel Vásquez de Lara, was a native of Tlazazalca, Michoacán, Nueva España, and a daughter Juan Lucas Alcalá y Orozco and Juana Avina Hurtado de Mendoza.
Juan Lucas Alcalá y Orozco, a native of Tlazazalca, Michoacán who died prior to 1661, was a son of Juan Alcalá y Zamora and Leonor Orozco (see Alcalá and Orozco lineage below). He was married with Juana de la Mora Mendoza y Garibay (aka Avina Hurtado de Mendoza), bt. 28 January 1616, Zamora, Michoacán, daughter of Juan de la Mora y Mendoza and Francisca Ochoa Garibay.
Mora y Mendoza and Ochoa Garibay:
Juan de la Mora y Mendoza, Alcalde Mayor of the town of Zamora, was married at Zamora on 11 March 1613 (veiled 26 August 1613) with Francisca Ochoa Garibay (aka Garibay Samaniego & Garibay Solis), daughter of Diego Ochoa Garibay (from Castilla) and Juana Núñez. Juan and Francisca had these known children baptized at Zamora: 1) Esteban de la Mora Mendoza y Garibay, bt. 2 February 1614; 2) Juana de la Mora y Garibay, bt. 19 February 1615 (possibly died as an infant); 3) Juana de la Mora Mendoza y Garibay, bt. 28 january 1616; 4) Juan de la Mora y Garibay; 5) Francisca de la Mora y Garibay, bt. 4 October 1618; 6) Lucía de la Mora y Mendoza y Garibai, bt. 12 January 1624; 7) Francisca de la Mora y Garibai, bt. 7 June 1625.

Alcalá and Orozco:
Juan Alcalá y Zamora and his wife Leonor Orozco both wrote their wills in 1623 at Valladolid, Michoacán, Nueva España. They were the parents of Juan Lucas Alcalá y Orozco.
Juan Alcalá y Zamora was a son of Juan Alcalá and Isabel Zamora, a native of Yelamos, Spain, who came to Nueva España to join her husband. Her record of passage to the New World identified her as a daughter of Antonio Zamora and Francisca Lozana.
Leonor Orozco has an ancestry the reaches back to the early 1400s in Spain, if not back to the late 1300s. It is the only confirmed New Mexico family ancestry that can be extended to the middle ages. Her family genealogy was researched by Mariano González Leal and José Igncaio Dávila Garibi. Members of the Orozco family are among the common ancestors for people with roots in Nueva Galicia.
Leonor Orozco was a daughter of Juan Lucas Morcillo, a native of Castilla, and doña Isabel de Orozco. Doña Isabel Orozco had two sisters: 1) Doña Catalina de Orozco married with don Bartolomé Rodríguez de Aranda, with issue, and 2) Doña María de Orozco married with don Tomás de Burgos Antolines, a native of Spain, with issue. These sisters were the daughters of don Pedro Hernández de Aguilera, owner of the hacienda de Xanamuato, Michoacán, Nueva España, and doña Beatriz de Orozco Tovar, a native of the Villa de Vélez, Spain.

Doña Beatriz de Orozco Tovar was a daughter of don Diego de Orozco Tovar and doñ Ana Mexía who were married at the Villa de Vélez, Spain. Don Diego had two brothers that had came to the New World: 1) Capitán don Juan de Villaseñor y Orozco, a conquistador of Nueva España and a founder of Valladolid in Michoacán who was married with doña Catalina Cervantes de Lara, and 2) Fransico de Orozco Tovar, a conquistador of Oaxaca.

These brothers were the sons of don Diego de Villaseñor y Orozco, aka don Diego de Burgos Villaseñor, Alcalde de la Fortaleza de Vélez, and doña Guiomar de Orozco. Doña Guiomar was a daughter of don Diego de Orozco, Comendadro de Pozo Rubio en la Orden de Santiago, and doña Guiomar de Sandoval (a daughter of don Pedro de Sandoval and doña Catalina Fernández).

Don Diego de Villaseñor y Orozco was a son of don Diego de Villaseñor Tovar ("El de Burgos") and doña Isabel Alfonso de Villaseñor, native of the pueblo de San Miguel Esteban. Don Diego ("El de Burgos") was a son of don Juan de Villaseñor y Serones (Comendador en la Orden de Santiago and Alcalde de la Fortaleza de Zaragoza) and doña Elvira Tovar y Enriquez. José Ignacio Dávila Garibi noted that doña Elvira was a close relative of the Marqueses de Berlanga and the Duques de Frías. Research into the Tovar family of Berlanga has not been able to verify this connection, although the possibility is quite strong.

Hello, Again!
I've been w/o my laptop for 2 weeks and am finding that you are using names that get me very excited! My great grandmother on my Dad's father's side was Maria Andrea ALCALA, but I can only find this name on my great-grandfather's baptismal certificate(?). My Dad's family came from Tamaulipas, but I can't find an Alcala anywhere at all in Tamps,.... maybe cause she wasn't from there! I've been unable to find any info on my Dad's side beyond the great-grandparents, so you've given me hope that there may be more info on Alcala in the Jalisco area! I'm happy, THANKS!!!

I have no knowledge of Juan Lucas Alcala Parents.
Parents of Juana Mendoza Mendoza y Garibay:-Julio or Juan de La Mora y Mendoza and Francisca Garibay.
I need correction and trying to fit what you mentioned below.
Also how does the jewish line fit in ?

Hello Adela, I have Tovar lineage also but they are from District of Jerez, Zacatecas Mexico and go back to Ancelmo Tovar abt 1766 and wife Maria Petra Carrillo abt 1771. Thier granddaughter Ricarda Tovar, 1826 was my direct ancestor. I have not been able to go any farther back since there are not any records to research that I know of.
Like you I am curious about the Tovar name. I have just submitted my records again to Rootsweb.com and you may want to check the Tovar surnames in my records from the District of Jerez Zacatecas Mexico. Just put in Ancelmo and you can go to the index to see what I have submitted.
good luck in your search,

My great-grandfather's first wife was an Eleuteria Tov/bar--daughter of
Mauricio Tov/bar and Petra Sandov/bal--born in 1849. I think she was
born in Jerez. Her siblings were born in Tepetongo (or the other close
town that starts with a "T"). Eleuteria and C/Zenobio were married in
1864 in Jerez and had about 4 or 5 children. She died and a couple of
years later he married my great-grandmother. All the surnames and
Cenobio's first name are spelt both ways in official documentation.
Remember that fact and you'll spare yourself some heartburn.:) Marge:)

Hi, Manuel.
I'm Irene Garcia(-Sandoval) and I have a LOMELIN ancestor on my Mom's side. She was:
Petra (and/or) Feliciana DE LOMELIN, married to Pedro Sandoval and mother of
-Buenaventura SANDOVAL, father of
-Hilario SANDOVAL, father of
-Maria Isaac SANDOVAL, my Gandmother on my Mom's side.
Most of my ancestors on my Mom's side seem to be concentrated around Teocaltiche, with the (Rancho?) of Ostotan being their primary place of residence. Again, SANDOVAL/SANDOBAL is the predominant name; some marriage certificates indicate that no immediate family relationships were discovered, but who knows?

I hope I was able to get my message across, my geneology language is even more limited than my Tex-Mex Spanish! Hope to hear from you or any others w/info related to this line. Gracias.

Hi Ronnie.
I have Petra/Feliciana de Lomelin married to Pedro de Sandoval in 1814, her parents apparently were Pedro Lomelin and Feliciana Rodrigues; and not too sure on this one, but I show Maria de Jesus Benabides married to Jose Manuel Yanes around 1800...
...Are we getting closer?

I know this is not about Lomelin but about Benavides. One of the presenters at the Conference in Saltillo was Benavides......he spoke in great detail about his family's history in Northern Mexico, he proceeded to tell us that this surname's origins are Arabic from Medieval times, see below, so not only does this marriage have Italian origins but Arabic/Spanish origins.

Don't you just love it........we are all mutts!!

Last NameBenavidesSpanish: patronymic from the common medieval personal name Ben
Avid, of Arabic origin, from ibn ?Abd ‘son of the servant(of God)’ see Benavidez.

Comment

My language instructor said that Benavides was originally Jewish, from Ben-David; then the Spanish "ez" appeared when the name carrier came to Spain during the period of moorish control of Spain before Jews were ordered out of Spain in 1492.

The website that Daniel is speaking of is Portal de Archivos Espanoles (PARES) and the link appears in the link section of Nuestros Ranchos. There is no password necessary.

http://pares.mcu.es/

I think that the documents that Daniel speaks of are not so much passports as the licensias para pasar a Indias, or permits to travel to the Indies, which were necessary to keep Jews, Muslims, Catalans, etc. out of the colonies. There is also an electronic version of Catalogo de Pasajeros, which is an index of all of the names on the passenger lists and licenses.

Arturo,
You and Emile have been gracious enough to give me great information. Thanks!
I would appreciate it if someone can help me find information on the surname TOBIAS.
I know extremely little about the name other than MARIA INOCENCIA TOBIAS , born around 1850, Mexico or Texas?? She married ANTONIO CAVAZOS CAVAZOS in Cameron County, Texas, in 1877. I am looking for her parents'names. All I know is that she was Spanish, and she does look Spanish in her picture. Thanks!!!

Juanita:

When you say that Maria Inocencia Tobias was "Spanish", I assume you mean that her caste designation was "Spanish"? As you probably know the Spanish kept a caste system in their colonies based on race (initially) and as time went on, based on racial "quality", i.e. meaning if someone adopted Spanish customs they might be considered Spanish even if they were genetically indigenous.

"Espanola" was simply a caste, just like "Indio" or "Mulato".

The surname Tobias appears to be centered around San Luis Potosi in the mid-1800s. The marriage document of Maria Inocencia Tobias and Antonio Cavazos should list her parents and likely her place of birth. Have you seen that marriage document?

Arturo,

Thank you for your reply.

I have Inocencia and Antonio's marriage certificate, but it certainly does not give parents'
names. It gives the padrinos' names. So unfortunate, especially since I have not been able
to locate her death certificate, which would certainly give that information.

I checked with Cameron County, Texas, because she supposedly died outside the city of Brownsville, in La Tina Ranch in Cameron County, but there is no record there. That is where I got their wedding certificate. I then checked with the city records and found nothing.I have tried Familysearch, but no luck. The LDS center near here has records of Texas deaths, so the first opportunity I get I will check there.

Incidently, I have not run into marriage certificates(not in Texas) that lists parents' names.

I also did not find any Tobias in my searches. I had heard that she was born in Texas, but she might have been born in Mexico.

Thank you again,

Juanita

Juanita,

Try and see if you can find other surnames she may have used. She may have been born under another surname, perhaps her mother's surname, or the Tobias may have been just part of her name.

Hello Arturo,
This was posted a while back. Anyway, you mention an electronic version of Catalago de Pasajeros. Is this also on Nuestros Ranchos?

Thanks,

I think that the documents that Daniel speaks of are not so much passports as the licensias para pasar a Indias, or permits to travel to the Indies, which were necessary to keep Jews, Muslims, Catalans, etc. out of the colonies. There is also an electronic version of Catalogo de Pasajeros, which is an index of all of the names on the passenger lists and licenses.

Hi, Can you please send me the actual web site as I cannot get into it and would love to see the passport of Lope Ruiz de Esparza ...thanks, Phyls

Helyn's Inspiration: El Salto de los Romeros ????

Even though I absolutely love Helyn's website:

http://pueblosamerica.com

I couldn't find the one place I've been searching for: Rancho del Salto de Los Romeros. I think this Rancho is no longer in existence and I can't seem to find historical maps that have it either. I guess it isn't critical that I find it other than I just would. The below scans from the 1855 census has it 4 Leguas from Santa Maria and sandwiched between Rancho de las Precitas (3 Leguas) and Rancho de los Sauces. I can find El Sauz which is probably the Los Sauces but I can't find my Rancho del Salto de Los Romeros. I found some information about Leguas below but don't know what else to do. Anyone have any thoughts about finding a historical town about 14 miles from Santa Maria de Los Angeles in Jalisco?

Hello Ronnie and Irene,

My husband's maternal great-grandmother Maria Aniseta Losano Aguirre bapt 20 April 1829 Nochistlan was married to a Domingo Lomelin on 27 Nov 1857 (IGI M606263 Nochistlan). This couple were the parents of Agustin Aguirre Lomeli (IGI J606246 Nochistlan).

Hello Everyone!

I am Irene (Nena) Garcia-Sandoval and I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to what appears to be quite a lively and active geneological group with names that belong to me too!
I was born and raised in Texas, and did some geneology research about 10 years ago, but I have forgotten what little I learned and will have to go through the learning process again. I'm really happy to see how much more information there is out there now and am excited about getting back to it.

I believe you are referring to the latin Catholic church use of " V.T." which means "Vetus Testamentum" When joined with "supra", the connotation would then become " the testimony given above." "Vt. Supra" would mean the aforementioned testimony. The use of this old Latin abbreviation was fairly well confined to church documents. The priest using it was probably well versed in Cannon law of the 16 century. By the way, I am researching the Cano's of Arandas and Ayotlan; If you know anyone also researching this name in this area please contact me. Thank you, Luis Cano

It reads: "Vt. Supra." It is placed at the very end of each record,
following the standard "para que conste lo firme: Vt. Supra."

Dear Corrine:

The words Vt. Supra. is a latin abreviation for "Ut supra dixit", that means,
"Como dije arriba" or "Like i Said before" something like that.

Im gonna have to write in spanish.

Corrine,

Ut Supra is Latin for "as stated above" or "as per the foregoing". This expression is used frequently in all types of documents. It confirms that the person affixes his or her signature in accordance with the preceding paragraphs.

My Larousse Dictionary defines it as follows:

Ut Supra.....fórmula que se emplea con frecuencia en los documentos para remitir a lo que antecede. También se dice Vide Supra. Las locuciones ut retro y ut infra tienen análogo empleo.

Take care, Corrine.
