Juan Padilla y Petrona de Siordia

Hola Todos, how is everybody doing ? Fine I hope. My I tried to contact Guillermo Padilla Origel about his article in www.somosprimos.com concerning Los Padilla Davila in the July 2004 issue ,but his e-mail was no good. My ancestors are Juan Padilla married to Petrona de Siordia en feb 14 in 1616 in Aguascalientes. I was trying to figure out who were Juan Padilla 's ancestors. I was confused in the way Guillermo Padilla Origel set it up. I'm just really slow and confused, what makes it worse in Jose Luis Vazquez's book GENEALOGIA DE NOCHISTLAN,page 191 he states Juan Padilla (y Delgadillo).

Luz Montejano's book: "Mitra de Guadalajara . . . "

Veronica,

Even as a somewhat impulsive bibliophile, I find the decision of buying a
specialty book to be highly personal with different motivations for each.

So, as to this book, let me just make a few comments for your

Joseph, my name is Daniel A. Esparza, I recently joined nc.rr.com. I have a number of questions and was wondering if you have a phone number and if you authorized folks to call you. I have read most of the information on the web site yet I still have questions i.e., the below listed publications, what kind of information do they have and or could I find a book that has information on marriages in the state of Jalisco, etc.

If you do have a phone nuber can I call you. Thank you.

Dear members:

Please make sure that your messages are posted to the appropriate list.

We have made three lists on the site in order to allow members to "opt out" of some discussions. The only way that we can honor their preferences is for topics to be posted in the appropriate list.

The research list is ONLY for questions or discussion related to specific genealogical research.

The general list can include topics tangentially related to genealogical research including ethnography, history, traditions, software related questions, etc.

All event announcements should be posted on the announcement list.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi

I thought that the copies were the ones in Mexico City at the Archivo de la

each church was to get one. Also, do you mean $3.00...30.00?

Hi there Mickey ,

The films can be purchased in Mexico City from I believe the Archivo General Nacional for about $ 350.00 pesos not dollars , that's about $ 35.00 US dlrs.
You can do it via mail but it's not recommended . If you know of anyone visiting Mexico City they can go there and purchase them .

The Pope and the Mormons

Hi Emily,

I'm addressing this to you because you were the most rational in
explaining the controversy.

What I don't understand is why the Pope is all upset about a religion
he does not recognize as legitimate taking a list of dead peoples

Comments

Comment

Hi, Linda,

Thanks for your sentiments. I appreciate it.

What discourages me about the Pope's letter is that now the local parishes will have more of an excuse to brush off us genealogists. Many don't want to take the time, or are afraid and suspicious that people might cause them to betray the confidentiality of the deceased.

Governments proclaimed that after 70 years confidentiality is not the concern for the deceased as for those still alive. I have had much trouble getting information from the churches in New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas whose records the diocese never permitted filming by the Mormons. Now they can just wave the Pope's or bishops' letters at me and tell me they have an edict not to share any information, just because it will be easier for them to not have to bother with such requests.

Hi Emily,

I'm addressing this to you because you were the most rational in
explaining the controversy.

What I don't understand is why the Pope is all upset about a religion
he does not recognize as legitimate taking a list of dead peoples
names and saying something (he does not recognize as being
legitimate) over them. It will not change what those people believed
when they were alive. Nothing can change what the deceased believe
after they die. They're dead, they can't change their mind. If they
were Catholic when alive, that's what they are now. If they were
Jewish when alive, nothing can change that. They remain what they
believed when alive.

It looks like anyone can go to a cemetery and copy a list of names
from the tombstones and claim to re-baptize them and the Pope will
recognize it's legitimacy by getting upset. Doesn't he have faith
the Catholic religion is strong enough to resist posthumous baptisms
from the Mormons?

I certainly hope the Pope doesn't follow through with this. It will
hurt more than genealogists.

Linda

Comment

I agree wholeheartedly with you, Linda. Through the ages, the Roman Church
as served as records-keeper for the communities in which Roman Catholicism
has taken root. As such, the clergy became public servants, dutifully
recording important "legal" events which occurred in their
jurisdiction--such as births, baptisms, marriages and deaths. Now, the
Church has blurred the boundaries between religion and government by
withholding what is by any reasonable definition public information. I feel
certain that those innocent citizens who allowed the clergy to create and
maintain these records never expected the information to be suppressed by
those same clerics.

The Pope has stepped away from his role as religious leader, in order to
make a political statement against the Mormon Church--which has no basis in
Scripture, nor in formal Church teachings. Not only is it a petty move,
analogous to taking home one's bat and mitt, but it is an abrogation of the
implicit contract the Church had with these communities--to keep records, in
lieu of local government.

It's not just the genealogists who will suffer, should the Vatican maintain
its stance. It betrays all of those who relied on their local church to
partially perform the duties of local government.

Karr

Comment

I disagree with this view. The Catholic Church is a religion; not a
government. While I agree that the Pope's decision is unfortunate for
those of us with interest in genealogical work, I believe directing our
criticisms at the Catholic Church ignores the fact that another religion
is using the Church's records for improper purposes; purposes that
offend the Catholic religion. Each religion has its own doctrines and
beliefs. So to argue that it does not hurt the Catholic Church to have
another religion use its own records to perform acts that offend its
beliefs is to ignore the fundamental reason any religions exist. The
Catholic Church is not telling Mormons how to practice their religion;
it is simply saying that we are not going to be accomplices to acts that
offend ours. Perhaps efforts should be made to ask the LDS to stop
baptizing deceased Catholics, which is the real reason that the Catholic
Church has closed its doors to LDS. The use of the records was a
privilege, which the LDS abused.

I also think it is somewhat ironic to claim that the Pope's decision has
not basis in Scripture. I find that the LDS decision to baptize
deceased Catholics has no basis in LDS philosophy. Most non-Mormons are
aware of LDS's interest in genealogy, but most people do not know the
reason for this interest. Of course there's nothing wrong with being
interested in genealogy, but it's far from just an interest for the LDS.
For the LDS, the whole point behind genealogical work is the idea that
those who died as non-Mormons can be baptized vicariously and thus
become Mormons posthumously. Before anyone can go to an LDS temple and,
among other things, be baptized for the dead, he first must be judged
worthy to go there. A person can't just show up at the temple doors and
expect admittance. No one is given entrance without producing a current
"temple recommend," rather like a spiritual identification card, which
certifies his status as a righteous Mormon. In other words, if I wanted
to be baptized Mormon, I would have to be judged worthy before being
baptized. Yet, deceased Catholics are baptized posthumously without any
evidence that they desired to become Mormons or believe in the Mormon
doctrines.

I also strongly disagree that deceased Catholics would be upset that the
Pope took steps to keep LDS from offending Catholic beliefs. On the
contrary, deceased Catholics would be overwhelmingly disturbed by the
arrogance of LDS to select their religion, given the evidence that their
choice was to be Catholic. My grandfather was a devote Catholic and
would be mortified to learn that the LDS posthumously baptized him into
their religion; a religion he does not belong to, or believe in. This
holds true for the deceased Catholic popes that have been posthumously
baptized by LDS. Catholics are not the only ones protesting these acts.
Jews, too, have expressed their anger at LDS. This issue boiled over
when LDS baptized holocaust victims, including people like Anne Frank.
This protest led to a 1995 agreement by LDS to remove 400,000 Jewish
names from its records. In my eyes, this is not a controversy about the
Catholics Church withholding religious (not government) records from
LDS; but the abuse by LDS of the privilege to access the records of
another religion.

I support any effort to convince LDS to stop abusing this privilege.

Yes I like the direction of Esther's message. I'm not saying that we
need to stop the discussion but maybe focus it on the goals and purpose
of the group: "serious research of Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or
Aguascalientes."

So if we can move this discussion in this direction I'm all for it
continuing, but if the discussion moves any further away from the focus
of the group then I'm in favor of taking it to private email.

If you continue on this thread please choose your words carefully.

thanks,

Ok, back to what we might do to advance our research. I am now reconsidering posting my genealogy on LDS site in respect for my ancestors and their beliefs. It was my understanding that the goal of the Mormons was simply to find everyone. This of course limits information which is counteractive to genealogy.

Maybe we should contact both the Mormon and the Catholics. Request that they come to some kind of understanding. Right now the trust has been broken and this creates problems for all parties. The mistrust will slow the progression of the work of the Mormons and create problems for those re-discovering their Catholic roots and the importance this religion played in their family history. If no understanding and tolerance of other's beliefs is forthcoming, I agree that we should request that the Catholic church make records more easily accessible to researchers.

My thinking is we need to contact both sides of the conflict and address how this is affecting us. Does anyone have contact information for the Mormon and Catholic Churches? May I suggest all of us writing letters directed to the same persons in each faith. Fifty letters to one person high up in each faith may have more an impact than possibly one or two letters to one of the numerous Heads of the Mormons and one or two letters to numerous Bishops.

These letters would of course not attack either faith, but just address the difficulty that the conflict will cause in our research and how this impacts our respect for the religion. We need to come up with a winning solution for us, while showing the religious leaders how it will positively affect their goals.

Has the Catholic church asked the LDS church to return all documentation? I
don't think that is the case. Based on the article I just read at
http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0802443.htm, it looks like they
want to halt records from now on. Is that correct?

The article also states that the Catholic and Mormon churches are planning
on having a dialogue about this soon. I checked the Vatican site, but there
is no way to submit a request or comment. I did find an email submission
form on my local diocese's web page. Maybe we should all submit a request to
our own diocese to get this rescinded?

What do you think?

I am Mormon! The Catholic church wants to halt documentation starting now. All previous is there's to keep. The good thing is we got all the records on average 1910 and all previous years. So I think everyone in the world should do their genealogy in this generation.

I agree. In either case, neither one of the two sides will change their
views. The question is what can we do about this? There was a comment on
another note if the Vatican is going to deny access to those records perhaps
they should do as the Mormons in the sense that they should set up family
centers to grant access to those who want to solely look at historical
records.

The Catholic Archives of the DIocese has those records. In Austen, Tx there is a Catholic Archive for that Diocese. I do don't know about the others. I know in Monterrey, the nums access the original documents, but am not sure. - Mickey or Lester is thir correct?

Hi there Esther ,

Let me see if I read this correctly , the question here is that there are original documents in Monterrey that nuns are in possession of . If that's the question then yes , there are two nuns that are in charge of documents for just about all of the state of Nuevo Leon . They will type the info found for you at a modest cost . A person can actually see and hold the books where the docs. are .

Felix -- you said "In my eyes, this is not a controversy about the
Catholics Church withholding religious (not government) records from
LDS; but the abuse by LDS of the privilege to access the records of
another religion....I support any effort to convince LDS to stop abusing this privilege".

I think what Karr meant was that the Church was the State before separation of the two, and those old Catholic records functioned as civil records. Scholars and other approved learned people had access to them for genealogical and other purposes even then. Also, I would hope that the LDS church would not remove the Catholic records as they did the Jewish records after they realized the re-baptisms were abuse of the privelege of obtaining the records, but leave them in for our perusal with the understanding that they would only desist in classifying them as baptized Mormons.

Subject: Re: [Nuestros Ranchos] The Pope and the Mormons

I disagree with this view. The Catholic Church is a religion; not a
government. While I agree that the Pope's decision is unfortunate for
those of us with interest in genealogical work, I believe directing our
criticisms at the Catholic Church ignores the fact that another religion
is using the Church's records for improper purposes; purposes that
offend the Catholic religion. Each religion has its own doctrines and
beliefs. So to argue that it does not hurt the Catholic Church to have
another religion use its own records to perform acts that offend its
beliefs is to ignore the fundamental reason any religions exist. The
Catholic Church is not telling Mormons how to practice their religion;
it is simply saying that we are not going to be accomplices to acts that
offend ours.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, Linda. Through the ages, the Roman
Church
as served as records-keeper for the communities in which Roman
Catholicism
has taken root. As such, the clergy became public servants, dutifully
recording important "legal" events which occurred in their
jurisdiction--such as births, baptisms, marriages and deaths. Now, the
Church has blurred the boundaries between religion and government by
withholding what is by any reasonable definition public information. I
feel
certain that those innocent citizens who allowed the clergy to create
and
maintain these records never expected the information to be suppressed
by
those same clerics.

The Pope has stepped away from his role as religious leader, in order to
make a political statement against the Mormon Church--which has no basis
in
Scripture, nor in formal Church teachings. Not only is it a petty move,
analogous to taking home one's bat and mitt, but it is an abrogation of
the
implicit contract the Church had with these communities--to keep
records, in

It's not just the genealogists who will suffer, should the Vatican
maintain
its stance. It betrays all of those who relied on their local church to
partially perform the duties of local government.

This is a very interesting view, I am a Mormon. I nmy opinion I believe we should only baptize those who are in our family in respect to the catholic church. We have the right to baptize those who are in relation to us. One thing I dont agree with my church is baptizing just anyone without any consent of another party who isnt related to a person. For example I baptize my ancestors because I descend from them, Im not gonna go around baptzing people who I have no idea who they are. We dont baptize the dead as mormons. This is a very contraversial matter. ITs very difficult to explain. I totally agree that non-mormons should be able to continue having access to these records if they were to be discontinued because geneaolgy is really about discovering who and where you came from not just to baptize people. Also, just b/c we baptize the dead doesnt mean they will accept the baptism. We believe once we baptize them they have the option to say yes or no. About your comment on the temple and the deceased no knowing anything on doctrine; we believe that all dead are taught and once someone baptises them they can choose to accept it or not.

I have been a member of NR for several months now but never posted before. I've searched some of the records on the NR site but found very few of my Mexican ancestors listed either here or on familysearch.

This subject of the pope and the records was a real hot button topic for me & I'm sure for many others here. I have been actively researching my heritage for 11 years. Also, I happen to be LDS but the church's beliefs are NOT my reason for searching for my ancestors. I have done temple work on their behalfs in the past but now prefer to just spend what little time I have on research rather than making it my life's mission to "baptize" every tom, dick & harry who happens to be in my family tree.

There are alot of things I do believe in in regards to Mormon belief as well as plenty I disagree with-one thing is they (the LDS) need to learn tolerance for others because it is up to everyone to worship as they see fit as per our 12 articles of faith. But for the Catholic church to take away the access to the records from everyone in an attempt to ensure that none of their baptized deceased members can be rebaptized Mormon ruins things for those interested in genealogy (both LDS members & non LDS alike) who have a right to the records concerning their deceased ancestors regardless of what their religion in this life was.

I have had relatives notice the temple ordinances noted in my database on various common ancestors from time to time who literally jumped down my throat for having done the work which didn't really mean all that much to me because everyone is supposed to have the free agency to choose for themselves as to whether to accept or reject the ordinances performed for them. It's like leading a horse to water; the LDS can do the work, but can't make that spirit accept the work done for them. Contrary to the LDS church's teachings, I believe God sees our hearts and when we stand before him to account for ourselves, I don't really think it's going to matter to Him all that much whether we went to the RIGHT or WRONG church, or had this ordinance or that done.

Well I was really surprised, as most people here in Los Altos, when I first
found out that the Mormon Church was granted authorization to microfilm all
these records that we've been so gratefully using for our research.

When I first went to the Parrish in Jalostotitlan, Jalisco (one of the
oldest in the Los Altos region) they told me that one of the conditions for
the Mormons to microfilm their records was that they would give each church
a copy of every film that was created. According to the people here, this
never happened. Instead, they were told recently that they could purchase
each film for $3000 dollars. I'm not saying this is what actually happened
or that it didn't, just that this is what I was told in Jalos.

I think that, like in every company and organization, information is one of
the most, if not the most valuable asset that it has. If our Catholic
leaders think it's best to keep that information private, then they're in
their right to do so.

Now if this does happen, then the Catholic Church should also open their own
Libraries and Research Centers around the world to allow any person
interested in genealogy to begin or continue their research.

Just a thought...

Yes, we should be able to have access to civil records, if the governments allow it. I know that in some places in Canada some officials are reluctant to release those records due to the disclosure of race (Native American, etc.) of some of their ancestors.

Actually Alicia, back to your comment the church has microfilmed all baptisms, marriages and (well we dont really have death certificates in the church but anyway) we've microfilmed already on average 1830-1960 so you can easily view them. But usually non-mormons wont ordered them usually more mormons do b/c some original first mormon ancestors in the genealogy.

Dear America:
Just because the online database doe not have your ancestors does not mean that the LDS does not have the records of your ancestors. Many, Many films are not in their database, but you can order the films and view them at your local family history center. Go to familysearch.org and click on the "Library" tab at the top of the website. Right underneath "Library", is "Family History Library Catalog". Click on this. Find the tabs down the right and click on "Place Search". On the next page put in the name of the town you are looking for, then Mexico in the box listed "Part of". When you find the town, click on the links to get a listing of all the films and years for that place. Instead of a Place Search, you can also do a Surname search to see if anyone has written a box about your surname. You might even do a keyword search. However, the LDS is working to put all their films online. Sometime in the future it may become a bit easier for us, but for now, I just order the films. Happy Hunting.

Hello,

I have been reading these posts for a few weeks now and I would like to add my 2 cents. Alot of people depend on the LDS records, however I can tell you from first hand experience they are frequently wrong or incomplete. Alot of the info depends on who inputs it and how complete the records are to begin with. If you are able, try to do the research yourself...Its very tough to get some information and can be pretty frustrating, but public records from courts, clerks, and such are your best bet. The census records are also iffy as to how accurate they are.

Other errors they picked up from my family tree was the name of George Douglas, instead of Jorge Douglas.......thanks!

Hi there everyone ,

I have to agree on the mistakes . I have been working with the Mormon folks here in Monterrey , Mexico for a few years now and one of the members ( the director of a stake ) asked me if I wanted to baptize my relatives ( the one's that passed away ) and even though I told him " absolutely not ! he went ahead and did it without my consent nor knowledge .

Now, here comes' the doozy , when I first came to Monterrey I just began jotting down whatever info I could find without sourcing it out and I made alot of mistakes and that's how he performed the baptisms with all my mistakes and I too tried to correct them but so far no luck .

Catholic Church Bans Filming of Records by LDS

I just learned of this and think that all of us who deeply care about genealogical research need to make our protests heard to the Catholic Church and the genealogical community as this can result in grave consequences for the preservation of valuable genealogical records:

That's insane!
From what I understand, the Catholic Church won't allow the LDS to continue filming Catholic records. But, what will happen with the thousands of fims from Catholic parishes that the Mormons already possess?

A long time ago, I was talking with a volunteer at a FHC in California, and a similar conversation came out. He told me that if they wanted, the Catholic church could order the Mormon church to return all the Catholic records that they have previously microfilmed at any time. According to this guy, even though the LDS used their own money to microfilm all this data, what's in it actually belongs to the catholic church, and they may request it back whenever they felt like it. I am praying that this is not the case.

This is horrible! Many do not have the time or money to track down records
all over the world. Isn't there a petition or something we can do about
it? I wonder if the Vatican would agree to release records to a none
religious group for the sole purpose of genealogy?

Yes, it's a terrible thng what El Papa is doing. Down with him!
I had gotten some documents from the cathedral in town, I was even able to see and look for information myself! That was about 15 years ago. They no longer can give you a copy of the document, but they give you the information they find. How much longer this will be, who knows? I hope they don;t see fit to recall all the information that is already in the hands of LDS. Supposedly they do not keep all those old record book there anymore. I wish I had looked for more people then.

An interesting question is whether that will apply to the parishes in Mexico if an indiviual requests a document, as opposed to a group requesting. I was able to get a document recently without any problem. It just cost $20.00, but it was like gold to me.

I am also aware that some indigenous groups in some parts of the world are protesting and refusing to cooperate with agencies or groups such as National Geographic. They are refusing to give their DNA. One of the many reasons they listed was that somebody was making money thru them. I wonder who is behind all this?

It's a sad day for genealogists.

I know this is an often repeated announcement around here, but since we have so many new members and the activity on the list has heated up, I figured I should repeat it.

Please, please trim your messages. When you reply to a posting via email, if you have your email set to include the message to which you are replying as part of the message, delete all but that part of the message which is necessary to provide context. Often nothing is necessary other than an appropriate subject for the reply message. When replies get posted online, they get posted along with the messages to which they are responding, so there is no need to repeat text. Such repetition makes the message very, very illegible.

Yes, women of that time period were still giving birth at 47, some studies show that in certain parts of Mexico women were still giving birth well into their 50s.

One of my direct ancestresses was Lorenza Najar, who had a relationship with Antonio Saldivar. This is in the very early 1700s in Zacatecas city. They had two sons--Josef and Pablo. I am a direct descendant of Josef's. Lorenza was from Nayarit. Research that I have done on her surname signifies that it is interchangeable with Najera but that the Najar is Moorish in origin.

Juanita,

I have the book and would be happy to do loookups, but I don't know if she has any more available. Last I heard it was out of print, but she had a few left (some years ago).

I haven't spoken to her either in quite a while, so I'm not sure how to get hold of her.

So sorry I couldn't help more.

Hola Connie ,how are you ? I too ordered Luz's book and they were out . I was wondering if you could see if a Vicente Hermosillo and (wife) Maria Inez de La Trinidad Martin de Padilla (also goes by)Martin del Campo Padilla Davila born may 05,1726 San Juan de los Lagos. Maria Inez de La Trinidad was daughter of Miguel Geronimo Martin del Campo and Josefa Padilla Davila . What I am trying to find out the ancestors of Vicente Hermosillo . I don't know when these guys got married but I 'm guessing around 1750. I don't know if they are even related.

Juanita,
Go to your nearest Public Library with the book information, author, etc.,
and request they attempt to find a copy of the book under the "Library
Loan" program. They should be able to locate a copy somewhere and make it
available to you. You should have a library card to check it
out........That's how I got use of a copy.

WHAT A GREAT BOOK IT IS. FROM ONE SHORT PARAGRAPH YOU CAN GET SEVERAL GENERATIONS. I SAW A LOT OF MY PEOPLE THERE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE INFORMATION I AM SEEKING WAS NOT THERE AND IT GOES BACK A GOOD WAYS. ON THE INTRODUCTION IT STATES THAT IT IS ONLY A FRACTION OF ALL THE ROLLS THEY HAVE TO PUT OUT. WHAT A JOB WELL DONE!

I WAS ABLE TO VERIFY A LOT OF INFORMATION ON THE PEOPLE I HAVE, SO I SPENT MANY NIGHTS BROWSING THRU IT. I RETURNED IT TODAY. AM LOOKING FOR OTHER CHURCH DOCUMENTS THAT I MIGHT GET THRU THE LIBRARY LOAN SYSTEM.

Juanita,
Thanks for your note. Yes, it is a great book. That was a tremendous amount of work and it was a job well done. I protect my signed copy well. :-)

I wish you luck on your search. I have so many films at the local FHC, but I've had such a hard time getting there. I look forward to going in the summer. They're only open 1 evening a week, and invariably I forget to head out there for some reason or other. I'm working on Aguascalientes in the 17th c. and don't have much on later generations except my direct lines.

During summer, I will have days to work on genealogy at the FHC. If you need anything from any of the films I've listed on Ranchos, please let me know. I'll look through them.

Best wishes,
Connie

Connie, I was reading your email and was excited to see someone who is
researching Aguascalientes. I'm also working on that area and am having
trouble. I also have read the emails about a book by Luz Montejano. I'm
wondering if the title is Hermosillo, or is there another title. I tried to
research some of the names used in the emails, but haven't found the actual
title or book. I'm wondering if you would be so kind as to give me some idea
as to where and what I can use to find information for Augas, and the title of
the book. I've used Ancestry, LDS etc. I've tried Nuestros but am so new to
this site that I'm not finding much and get discouraged. Thank you for your
time. Lupe

Connie, my name is Daniel A. Esparza, I have just joined Nuestros Ranchos and I am trying to find information on my Grandfather Crispin Esparza. I have heard stories that he was possibly born in Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes. His birth date is: 16 April 1887, he died on 22 March 1956 in Gilroy, CA. I retrevied this information from death certificate.
I read your email to Juanita and noted that you talk about a "Book". Can you please share any light on what the books is all about and how I might be able to get one to do more research on Aguascalientes. Many thanks.

Introduction to NR_2nd Attempt

I was born in Aguascalientes, Ags. but live in Texas,  and from my mother [Eva de Loera] have been able to determine that my maternal grandmother [Maria del Socorro Loera] was born in El Terrero de la Labor c1930 and died 1977 in Ags., and that her mother [Petra Lara Loera] was born c1903 and died 1994 within the same geographical area.  My maternal grandfather [Cesareo de Loera] was also born in El Terrero de la Labor c1925 but i do not know his d.o.b. yet but he died @ 2 years ago.

I believe I can call my myself a specialist researcher in the Calvillo Area! Al most 40% research for me is there. I am pretty somewhat informed about de Loeras, we re related to them distantly. The families of Calvillo, Aguas, Huanusco, Jalpa and Tabasco intermarried a lot! I dont think as much as Los Altos but we were crazier i believe we have cases half siblings marrying, uncles and neices and nephews and aunts. Kind of akward. I bet somewhere really close were related about 3rd or 4th cousin. What I remember they had close ties to los Durán and Rodríguez families. Do you guys consider yourself mexicans? Theres a lot of families down there that dont consider themselves; like my bisabuela. Just curious.

new file posted

I just posted an updated file of my records on Rootsweb.com. If you enter my uncle " Rito Castanon 1919" it will pull up my personal family tree then you can go to index and search for whatever surname you are researching. The records cover mostly District of Jerez Zacatecas and related areas, Zapotlan El Grande/Ciudad Gusman, Tamazula de Gordiano and other related cities in Jalisco and Chilchota and related cities in Michoacan.

Introduction to NR: Quintero Del Rio

Hello, My name is America Quintero and I am looking into my fathers family
history. My father says my grandfather was born in Tuxpan Jalisco, he moved
to Monterrey, had a family there and then passed away. His name was

Welcome to the group. I hope the people in the group can help guide your search for information on your father.

These tips are for all other newcomers who are just starting their research:

First of all there is almost NOTHING any of us can do without dates (even if they are approximate) and place names. You have given us a place name, but without knowing your father's approximate dates of birth, marriage, etc. we cannot tell you what sources would be appropriate, etc.

Also, you mention your grandmother but don't provide a name nor any dates. Please be more precise about the information that you DO have so that we can help you go from there. It would be helpful if you could post your known genealogy in a standard format in your file folder.

Thank you for the advice. I was told that my grandfather (Salvador Quintero
Del Rio) was born in the year 1900 in Tuxpan Jalisco. I am still trying to
find out the exact date of his birth and the names of his parents. I know
that at some point he married my grandmother in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and
stayed there for the rest of his life. I am not sure if I believe he was
born in Mexico at all to be honest, mostly because of the tattoos he and his
mother carried on their arms. They never spoke of them and hid them, so my
father does not even know what the numbers are, or how many there were.
>From what I understand it was some sort of branding and I don't know much of
anything yet but that to me seemed as if they were in some sort of camp, I
don't think that camps like that existed in Mexico but I could be wrong.
His and her features were very European, according to my mother. I read
some where that there are many Jews in Mexico, especially in Nuevo Leon and
Jalisco, that I did not know and makes wonder if they may have been
imigrants? I don't know if that kind of record would exist or where to even
look for such a thing. I will post more information when I find it. Any
guidance on where to look/search is greatly appreciated. I am planning a
visit to a Latter Day Saints Family Center, even though nothing came up in
their online search.

Again, it would be very helpful if you could provide your grandmother's name as spouses names are important in identifying the correct person.

Now with an approximate birth date of 1900, I can tell you that your grandfather would not be listed in the LDS databases as they do not extract information from records past 1900 for privacy reasons... that is one of the reasons why dates, even if approximate are so important.

Give us some of his other life events... did your grandfather immigrate to the United States? If so, there will be a border crossing record for him.

If you have the approximate date of his marriage, you might be able to track down his marriage record (in civil or church records) which should give his parents' names.

The Jews in Monterrey are mostly old Sephardim Jewish converso families that immigrated there in the 1500s to escape the Inquisition in Spain. There is however, a decently sized Ashkenazi Jewish population in Mexico from around the time of World War II.

So far this is what I have got. (It would be nice to have a timeline app to document this sort of stuff)

1900 Salvador Quintero Del Rio was born in Tuxpan, Jalisco.
~1929 Salvador Married Paula Gamez Rodriguez in Monterrey, NL
1933 Salvador's first born, Salvador Jr., was born
1934 my Father was born in Monterrey, NL

Salvador's mother (Carlota Del Rio) was born in Jalisco and I'm guessing some where between 1870-1880. I am also guessing that she married her husband Mr. Quintero (first name unknown) around 1898-1899. We don't know if Salvador was an only child and we don't know what happened to his father. According to my father Salvador was very skilled in chemistry, metals and electrical systems of the time. The family also had a sugar processing mill in Jalisco that might have been called "Quintero Del Rio", before they moved to Monterrey. Salvador contributed much of his skill to the Fundidora in Monterrey, NL. I checked the LDS for marriages and births of Carlota Del Rio, and of most Quintero's and disappointingly nothing really came up. I did find a Salvador Del Rio that crossed the US border, it had a picture of a young man that I was able to clear up. I'll be showing it to my father. I don't think it was him but there was something about his ears that caught my attention.

I'm guessing at the dates considering that during that time people were probably married young (mid to late teens) and usually had children shortly afterwards.

You can download PAF software for free from the familysearch.org site and it will allow you to keep your genealogy information in a database that can produce many different types of standard genealogical reports. Such software is a must for anyone seriously conducting genealogy research.

It makes it possible to enter notes, sources, etc. for each person and event which are musts if you want to have reliable documentation of your research.

Most of the descendants of these old converso families in Monterrey and Nuevo Leon do not know of their heritage. Their heritage has only in recent years come to light with genealogy and dna research.

Microfilm Baptisimal Records

I am ordering up microfilm for baptism records for both Huejucar and Cololan for the mid-1880s.

Some of the dates are overlapped by baptisms "naturales". I am not exactly sure what that means.

Comments

Comment

Joseph,
Bautismos "naturales" means that the parents were not married. I would check both sets of records, several times I have found one or two children in a family in the "naturales" records even though the parents were married and other children were in other records. It usually happens around the time a new priest took over.

I have copies of Mexican birth records where some children were born before the parents were married and therefore listed as hijos naturales and sometimes written as illegitimos.  Then there are birth records of children form the same parents shown as legitimos, presumably born after they were married!!  Another thing the local priests do is change the surname spelling.  I have seen Bareda v Barrera in the same family due to a priestly misspelling which becomes recorded for history, thus effectively changing the surname. Many Spanish last names have these changes.  Phonic error is responsible.

Jaime,

I have a Lopez Gonzales and Lopez Cerbantes (mom is Felipa/Maria Felipa) in my 8th generation; everything else connects well. Is this the same mom with Cerbantes/Gonzales? How do I choose father's surname? Do I need to go further back to find out?

I guess I need reassurance that I'm in the right track? Thank you.

I would definatly look for both first off with Legítimos then Naturales because we never know if our ancestors had children before they married. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IN GENEALOGY!

Baptisms "naturales" are children born out of wedlock.

Meeting is SoCal.

Invitation:

You are cordially invited to attend the SoCal meeting. At the present time about 12 members in the Southern California area have expressed their desire to attend.

The month of June is not the ideal time to hold the meeting because members have vacations and graduations that take preference over this meeting.

The "Meeting in SoCal" message thread is being moved to the Announcements list, since the message does not pose or answer a specific genealogy-related research question.

Please be mindful of the topics of the different lists. Guidelines of what is appropriate subject matter for each list are detailed in the Nuestros Ranchos user guide which can be downloaded from the FILES-REFERENCE MATERIALS section of the site.

Invitation

Hi, Primos, Primas, and fellow members:

It has been some time since the Nuestros Ranchos Group members in the Southern California area had a meeting. I have been waiting for somebody to suggest it, but time is flying by and it would be nice if we got together again.

John:

I would love the opportunity to meet other Nuestros Ranchos members. Yes, I would love to attend the meeting. I already have plans for the weekend of June 20, 21, 22, but have no other set plans for that month. I sure hope it works out that I can go. It would be great!

John and other Nuestros Ranchos members,

You are all cordially invited to attend the next meeting in Northern California. The meeting is scheduled as follows:

Date of Event: May 17, 2008
Event time: 10:30 am - 2:30 pm
Location: Raley's Event Center
4900 Elk Grove Blvd.
Elk Grove, CA

Our group is in the process of formalizing its structure. We are filing as a non-profit organization called "Nueva Galicia Genealogical Society". We hope to be a complementary group to Nuestros Ranchos and not to duplicate its purpose or information. I maintain the distribution list, so if you want to be notified of future events all you need to do is send me a direct e-mail and I will add you to the list.

We do not want to restrict membership to Nueva Galicia researchers only and any serious researcher is welcome to attend our meetings. We will be adopting Bylaws for our group at the upcoming meeting and will be developing a website.

Some of our past activities include: have gone on field trips as a group, discuss research techniques, held picnics, reviewed books, etc. We plan on setting up a booth at the Festival de la Familia which is held yearly in Sacramento, CA. Our meetings are lively and is made up of some very talented individuals. One of our long range goals is to have Joseph and/or Arturo attend one of our meetings.

John, I will add you to my distribution list and I hope to see you and other primos and primas at our next meeting. An RSVP one week prior is appreciated since the meeting room is small, but if necessary I could try to find a larger room to accomodate everyone.

Wow you guys continue to do great things. I want to hear more about
becoming a non-profit. Maybe the nuestrosranchos.org group should do the
same.

and you all know how to honor someone. I'm really not sure when it will
be possible for me to come to one of your meetings but I'll definitely
look forward to it one day. Arturo seems to travel a lot more than I so
maybe he would be able to attend sooner.

thanks again for the compliment of making me and Arturo a "long range
goal" (big grin)

Maria:

I would love to attend one of your meetings sometime. I think May 17th is too short a notice, especially to get to Sacramento, but I am out in California a couple of times a year and I can make the effort to make a trip that coincides with one of your meeting with enough advanced notice.

I would love to talk to you about formalizing this Nuestros Ranchos group as a non-profit as well and perhaps coordinating efforts with your Nueva Galicia group. Also, let me know if you need help setting up your website.

I would like to know if there is enough interest to get together sometime in the very near future, possibly sometime in June. I will be more than glad to host the meeting at my house. I live in Wildomar, just South of Lake Elsinore and North of Temecula.
The date of the meeting can be determined by members submitting a date which is convenient to them. I think a Saturday would be a good day to hold it.

I am looking forward to seeing all of our members again and also I would like to extend the invitation to the new members of the Nuestros Ranchos Group who reside in this area. It is a great opportunity to meet with your fellow researchers and exchange ideas and information.

If you like the idea of getting together again, please submitt a date through this forum or contact me directly: 1gnzlz@verizon.net

More details of the meeting will be made available through this forum as soon as as the final decision is made to have the meeting and a date is set.

Sorry to write as a stranger, but I read the emails and yours caught my
eye. I
live in Northern California and wonder where they are meeting. I haven't had
much luck with Nuestros, but it could be that I'm not researching correctly.
It might help if I could join the meeting and learn. I'd appreciate it if you
could give me info on that meedting. Thanks, Lupe

Hi John,
I haven't had much time to devote to my research (lots of family stuff going on), but depending on the date, I'm interested in getting together with you and other rancho members. The last gathering was held at my home and there was a lot of information shared among the members that were able to attend.

Invitation: Milwaukee, Madison, Racine/Kenosha area

Hi Wisconsin Nuestros Ranchos members,

Are there people in the Milwaukee, Madison, Racine/Kenosha area who
would like to meet, exchange information, and compare genealogies etc.?

If so, contact me and we can set up a meeting date.

Linda:

There are a number of other Nuestros Ranchos members in Wisconsin. You can find them by clicking on "My Account" from the right-hand menu and then clicking on "Wisconsin" from your own profile.

Alternatively, you can click on the "Search" button on the upper right, click on the "User" tab and then do an advanced search where you select "Wisconsin" for under the "State/Province" field.

Good luck!

It is great to see people take the initiative to get together in person. I have had the pleasure and fortune of meeting several Nuestros Ranchos members in California, Utah and here in DC and it has been a wonderful experience each time.
