Iron Curtain

I've run into an Iron Curtain with my 4th GGF Diego Martin Flores. He was born probably abt 1730 and died 27 Jul 1808 in Colotlan. He married my 4th GGM Gertrudis Leano. de la Torre (Montelongo)who died 15 Feb 1772 in Colotlan. I believe their fist child was Jose Agapito Flores b. 15 Mar 1754 in Colotlan, Jalisco. Together they had 8 children that I know of.

Diego Martin Flores remarried on 3 Jul 1772 Colotlan with Maria Felipa De La Encarnacion Enriquez naturale child of Maria Manuela De La Luz Enriquez. Felipa has been referred occassionally with "De Mier" surname. Together with Diego Martin Flores they had at least 10 children with the eldest Juan Paulino Flores b. Jul 1773 in Colotlan.

I have looked at Diego's photo-film records of his 18 children's baptisms, his death record, his marriage record with Felipa and there is no mention of who his parents were. I even looked for a photo-record marriage testamony prior to his marriage with Felipa BUT could not find one.

I've tried several parishes from Zacatecas and Jalisco but came up empty.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions??

Matching results in IGI index to "images" of records online

I found a possible match (Maria "Virginia" Fernandez, born 04 Jul 1885 to Pantaleon Fernandez and Marianna/Maceana Macias) in the IGI index with the christening listed as San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, when searching for my husband's great-grandmother. However, when I "browse" the online records for San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto that are available, I can find the correct baptisim year, but she doe not seem to be in the book. I found this with her sister Maria Jacinta Fernandez as well. I did inquire at Familly Search.org, and they inidcated that those records were indexed, but not online yet. Wouldn't the San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto, baptism images online be the same as those in the film?

I will certainly order the film, but was a bit confused since I expected the images of the baptism books from San Francisco de Asís, Tizapán el Alto to be the same in any format.

be aware of some names in the IGIs

I've found a few errors in the names of some IGIs.

There are some IGIs with names which INCLUDE their place of residence. i.e. I've found many names like Jose MARIA DE LA TORRE (plus the surnames)in which the Indexer mistakenly ADDED their residence (Maria De La Torre)as part of their name! Of course there are many OTHER names and residences this has occurred.

If the name looks "odd" in comparison to their parents, it's better to look at the actual digital image of that event. This is a good way to eliminate duplicate people.

Indexing/Inderxacion

Hello,

Currently the NR group has a special interest group that is involved in
indexing. We are trying to finish up a project that involves the indexing of
records from Fresnillo and Villanueva, Zacatecas. Originally I thought the
project was near finished but it seems that a lot of batches need to be
redone so there is still a significant amount of work to do. After this
project is finished I’ve been told that we’ll have a Jalisco project made
available. If you are interested in joining the NR Indexing group please
email me directly at joseph@nuestrosranchos.org so I can send you some
instructions on how to get started.

Dear Primos and Friends:

Wishing you a Happy 4th of July. Hope you all relaxed and refreshed, basking in the freedom which we Americans enjoy.

Twenty five years ago, my husband and I traveled on our own to the Middle East, visiting Israel and Egypt. Staying for a few nights in Cairo, we were able to observe the people. In Egypt, men in military uniform with rifles on their backs are plentiful the streets, watching.
One uniformed man, wore a gun holster on his belt, and carried a short whip. As we were about to cross the street, I noticed before us, a father and son. As they were about to pass the uniformed man, he with a grin struck the father once with the whip, as they passed,. The father just winced. I remember the look of the child's face, as he looked up to his father, wondering, confused, helpless, why?

In Tel-Aviv we slept in a hotel facing the American Consulate. From our window.. we could see the bullet holes in their walls. In the south, in Elat, (also known as Bay of Aqaba) we slept in a small hotel with a wire fence separating us from Jordan. From my bed, I could see the machine gun directed towards the hotel. Terrorist attacks and suicide bombers were increasing in number while we were there. Several times, a location where we had been the day before was bombed, or attacked. Even an ice cream poisoning took place. We traveled to the Golan Heights and soon realized how really small Israel is. You can comfortably travel from one end of Israel to the other in one day. The walls surrounding the old city of Jerusalem, enclose an area about the size of one of our larger malls. Israel's existence is a miracle.

I have several life images that I would like to share:

The most telling vision of the living conditions is the following: In Israel, agriculture, dairy, and other farms are conducted in kibbutz .
These are isolated cooperatives run by the people that live there, who are on alert 24 hours a day. In order to protect themselves from the marauding Arabs, the kibbutz are protected in various ways. In one section the farms were protected by rows of rolled barbwire fences. At one site, I think I counted at least 6 rows of rolled barbwire fencing.

In Israel most young people serve in the military, girls and boys. They wear their rifles on their backs. Several times, standing in line to get a falafal, I backed into a hard rifle carried by a young soldier.
Israel are surviving by accepting that living in Israel requires constant diligence.

The most uplifting image that I recall is of a young girl in uniform, rifle on her back, sitting cross legged on the top of some stairs, on duty before a government building, happily knitting.

file updated on Rootsweb.com

I just updated my files on Rootsweb.com They are primarily Zacatecas and Jalisco but some of the ancestors came from Michoacán so those records are there also. My file is called Mexico. My root person is my Father Chet Castanon and Mother Dolores Gutierrez. The Castanon's were primarily in district of Jerez, Zac and the Gutierrez line is from Chilchota Michoacán and went into Zapotlan el Grande/Ciudad Gusman and then into Tamazula, Jalisco.

Once into my files you can go to the index to see if there is a surname you are looking for in those areas.

Family Finder test now $99

FamilyTreeDNA.com has lowered the price for the Family Finder test to $99.
Since there are so many of us that have at least one ancestor in common
this can be an additional tool in our research by helping each other out
with DNA matches and triangulation.

Here is a good site with an explanation of triangulation.

http://dna-explained.com/2013/06/21/triangulation-for-autosomal-dna/

You will also get to see what percentage of European, Amerindian, Asian,
Middle Eastern and African ancestry you have.

Previously the price was so high it was hard to justify spending so much on
the test. Now with the current price it might be worth it to many of you.
Here is a link where it can be ordered.

http://www.familytreedna.com/family-finder-compare.aspx

You can also order it and join the Los Altos de Jalisco DNA project at the
following site -

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=losaltosdejalisco

The prices have also been reduced for some of the Y-DNA tests.

Saludos,
Armando
