Does anyone know where to search for military records for Spanish soldiers of Nueva Galicia for the years 1600 to 1700's? I have several ancestors that are listed as captains but been unable to find any information of job descriptions and military units. your help is greatly appreciated.

Hello my name is Anisabel Santamaria. I should really be doing research on my family in Sonora, (i'm kind of stuck now) however, my husband's paternal & maternal side has been interesting and fairly easy to find, of course until you hit a wall and don't know where else to go. I am looking for information from El Tuito, Jalisco on the Rubio, Castillon, & Avalos families. I did go all the way back to 1815 on the Castillon family and thought I had a connection until about 1830 defunciones, it skips about 10 years, where is probably where my answers are. The pages are consistent but somehow those 10 years are missing.
As for my husband's paternal side, Santamaria, Salgado & Preciado are from Tomatlan. His great grandfather Pablo Santamaria was supposedly a "huerfano" and it turns out they were wrong. I called the church to find out information on Pablo's brother, Enrigue Santamaria and found his baptism and their father, who is Gabriel Santamaria. Well until I find out some dates to break it down I hate to call the church without good information. I have been unable to find the marriage of Clara Salgado with Pablo Santamaria. I found census information on the entire family on both maternal and paternal side but the Santamaria leads me to a dead end without any more dates. I was told the church in Tomatlan had burned down or something but if I continue to listen to his family (BTW....it looks like I know more information on his family than they do :) they will detour me the wrong way.
This research is both tiring yet exciting when I find a link. I did make a connection to a child Maria Susana Castillon in El Tuito died 1819 and her father's name was Onofre Castillon, which is what my mother in laws grandfather's name is so I'll assume that this Onofre is the main patriarch of the clan from the 1700's. I believe the info I found on this death entry shows that they are indeed from Spain, which we all know most of them are but having something actually in writing is where all your research rewards you.
Well since I am new I hope I did this right and haven't left our or added too much on this forum. I would appreciate any information that you might have. BTW...is familysearch.org going to add Tomatlan to their database? I would love to help index for Jalisco, if we are allowed to chose the location. Thanks.
Anisabel Santamaria
Cualquier pista sera bienvenida
The above, captioned couple were married 20 ene 1720 in San Juan Barco, la Barca, Jalisco. They had at least three children: George Teodoro (bau. 28 abr 1720), Joseph Manuel (bau. 08 may 1723) and Juana María (bau. 13 ene 1726).
My research includes a María Josepha Benites who married Miguel Aseves in Portesuelo, la Barca 11 jul 1742. It is not an unreasonable speculation that 'my' María Josepha may also be a child of the above family, although I have not yet located her baptismal record.
Does anyone have any research that may include either María Josepha Benites or the family of Salbadór Benites de Villa Reál and Clara de Susilla?
Best wishes,

Hi, I am new here and I am trying to find more information on my ancestry and I am trying to get a sense as to where my ancestors are from since my family has no clue as to where we come from. I have been doing a lot of research for almost 9 months now and have been able to find a lot of interesting stuff that has surprised my whole family however I can not find more information about a specific family. I am stuck on my 2nd-great grandmother's parents and their family. Her name was Maria Patrocinio? or Patrocinia? Dimas born on the 17th of September of 1883 and baptized on the 1st of October 1883. She had a daughter who is my great grandmother named Vicenta Camarena with a man whose name I still don't know besides his last name (Camarena). Maria Patrocinio? or Patrocinia? Dimas moved to the United States and lived in Silver City New Mexico where she re-married to a man named Marcos Acevedo. She was the daughter of Santiago Dimas and Maria De la Rosa. Santiago's parents were Macedonio? or Celedonio? Dimas and Petra Ramirez. Maria De la Rosa (whom which I am more interested in) was the daughter of Juan De la Rosa? or just Rosa? and Victoria De Abila. So far that is all I know. I am more interested in Maria De la Rosa and her parents since I want to find my mothers direct maternal lineage. Thank You to anyone who took the time to read my message and decided to help :)
I just listened to a very interesting podcast about the Spanish Inqusition. It goes into detail on the methods of torture used by the church to catch secret Jews and also, it talks about the expulsion of the Sephardic Jews from Spain. Many of these converted and immigrated to the New World, but kept practicing their religion in secret. Several of them populated our target states and are our ancestors. If anyone is interested in this podcast, here's the link:

I plan to take time over the next week to go through the records for late 1600's and early 1700's in Jerez. I will be looking primarily for Rodarte, Caldera, de Avila, and Munoz. If anyone would like me to keep an eye open for their ancestors, send me the last name to look for and I will point you towards any records I come across.
I typically only focus on records for Spanish and Mestizo. Just helps to speed things up.
Here are the two files I plan to look at:

Hello,
Has anyone done any research on the Álvarez de la Cruz family in Jalostotitlán, Jalisco, Mexico. This is the line of my paternal grandmother Maria Guadalupe
Álvarez. I am stuck with Antonio Álvarez de la Cruz, born circa 1700 and married to Maria Efigenia Sermeno somewhere in Jalostotitlán or another pueblo. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Importance of Oral History --- verified as much as possible by genealogical research
As I look at my genealogy I am amazed at the grouping of people who came together supplying their individual DNA to eventually create me. Yes I know about me and my parents and grandparents but beyond that I know very little aside from a few oral history accounts passed down through the generations. And believe me I'm so grateful to my Aunt Julia Puentes de Espinosa who I spoke to every other week for 1.5 hours for two years before she died. Fortunately for me she had a mind that often put me to shame as she remembered stuff that I had forgotten.
I want to know more I want to know about the lives of relatives, about their hopes, dreams and their loved ones. I want to know about the work they did and their lives as children and sweethearts and how they met and married their spouses.
I guess I'm saying that if those of you who have a full head of steam in searching for more and more generations of relatives who you and the rest of your family has never heard of well maybe you should think again about the approach you're taking to family history
After all haven't those genealogical records been there for hundreds of years and won't they be available for a few more? Why not prioritize and ask yourself an important question. What won't be available for hundreds of years. . .well yes it is those relatives of yours that are currently living.
So if one day you decide that you want to add a little more to the genealogy of the family that you one day hope to pass on to your kids and other family members take great care to prioritize your activities now. Think about the oldest members of your family and make appointments to go and speak to them. Take a digital voice recorder and a camera. Ask if it is ok to record the conversation and set the recorder so it will not interfere with the conversation. Ask questions that don't require a lot of thinking about specific dates. A lot of time asking too specific of a question can totally disrupt or even stop a conversation. Rather than asking, "What year did g-grandfather Cecilio die" ask "Were you already marriend when he died, if yes, were any of your children born?" You see if you ask it like that you'll be able to calculate the date from known information and if they are up to the task you'll get a volunteer answer, oh "he died in 1913 in Juarez". Also make more of your questions general in nature and fine tune them as you go. . ."Tell me about what is was like when you went to school as a little girl? then you can ask "and did you and Uncle Felix go to school together?" and "Did grandfather Cipriano ever take you to school" and "after school did you go to abuelita Antonia's house, did you get a snack, did she put you to work, what did she look like?" etc. etc. etc.
Get your older relatives just talking about the old days and you'll be surprised how much they know, just let them go and they will give you all kinds of details.
So set aside the documents and interview your relatives.
=====================
Ok here is my real question but Oral History was the first and foremost answer to my question.
"Other than oral history what are the best places to find out more information about your relatives?"
Please add your thoughts to this list and give me your ideas of where a person can find some of the following for their locations in Jalisco, Zacatedcas, and Aguascalientes:
1) Old newspapers
2) Wills and Testaments
3) Land and Property Deed Records
4) Court Records
5) Military Records
6) Civil and Religious Organizations
7) ?
8) ?
9) ?

Marriage and baptism records clearly show that Teresa Caldera (1697-1731) was the daughter of Nicolas Caldera and Leonor Rodarte (daughter of Mateo Rodarte and Leonor de los Reyes). However, I am a bit confused with respect to Teresa Caldera's husband, Antonio Rodarte.
I have viewed the marriage record of Antonio and Teresa dated Oct 1723. While it states clearly that Antonio is the son of Juan Rodarte, the mothers name is difficult to read, but appears to be Ysabel. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15088-8854-31?cc=1410092&wc=…
I have also located records showing that Antonio remarried following the death of Teresa. The Informacion Matrimonial completed in 1736 clearly states he is the son of Juan Rodarte and Ysabel de Avila. Included is documentation of Teresa's death confirming his eligibility to remarry and leaving no doubt as to his identity.
The document can be viewed here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15272-48199-8?cc=1410092&wc=…
While I can show that Juan is the legitimate son of Mateo Rodarte and Leonor de los Reyes, I have not personally seen any conclusive documentation showing that Leonor is the daughter of Mateo Rodarte and Leonor de los Reyes. My only source has been research performed by others with no clear citations. The relationships are shown here: http://jerezzacatecas-salvador.blogspot.com/2009/02/descendientes-de-ma…
Based on this, Antonio and Teresa would have been first cousins since Juan Rodarte and Leonor are brother and sister. While Antonio and Teresa could legally marry, it is my understanding that such a union would require dispensation from the church.
Just wondering if anyone can help me clarify the relationships.
Hello Joseph, I hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season. I read about the
Trastamara. As you know, I'm new at genealogy and was wondering do you think
this would be too advanced for me? Should I take another class before to
prepare. I can read and write Spanish but from my short experience...I still
have a lot to learn about genealogy, research and especially reading the
documents.
I'd appreciate any suggestion you have. Have a good evening.

p.s. Thank you Joseph !
I would like to suggest that we not post lists of our FF matches via
Nuestros Ranchos but share them privately via email instead. Posting on NR
puts the lists on the internet. I believe customers of FF give permission
for FTDNA to share their names with their matches but may not be expecting
them to be shared with the whole world via the internet. I hope all of you
agree.

Hi everyone
Is is just me or are there some recent posts missing from the recent posts list? How can it hop from today's posts to posts a year ago on one page?
When I click on "My recent posts" there are none there....
Is this a new technical issue?

I'm trying to find more information about the family of my great
grandfather. His name was Teodoro Alba. Most of the information we have
about his origins come from stories passed down from him to his children, so
they should be regarded as more legend than fact. This includes that he was
born in or near Guadalajara around 1856 or 1857. His father, whose surname
was Alba, had stowed away on a ship from Spain to Mexico. His mother's
surname was Gonzales and she was of Mayan descent. He had several siblings,
but we don't know their names. At some point the father left and returned to
Spain. Teodoro joined the Mexican army while still a teenager, deserted and
crossed into Texas sometime between 1875 and 1880. There he became an
accomplished cowboy. He gradually adapted the American spelling of Alby.
He married Mary Ellen Marks in Bonham, Texas on October 8, 1891. They had 7
children, 4 of whom lived. His wife Mary Ellen died shortly after 1910.
Around 1920, he and his children settled in Bixby, Oklahoma where they came
to own several businesses. He was affectionately known to everyone in this
small town as "Dad" Alby. His citizenship paper in 1938 describes him as 81
years of age; a white male of medium complexion; blue eyes; grey hair; five
feet, three inches in height and widowed. He died in Bixby on December 18,
1943.
Some in the family believe was actually born in San Juan de los Lagos. I
have found a birth record for a Teodoro Alva Terrones born on April 2, 1857
in that location.
Any leads would be appreciated.

I never thought Family Finder was going to be able to go back 10
generations or so. I have found three different people through Family
Finder with whom I share a different ancestor about 10 generations back.
WIth one person I share ancestors on the Macias Valadez and Martín del
Campo lines. With another person I share ancestors on the
Cervantes-Villaseñor and Macias Valadez lines. With the third person we
share Diego de Burgos Villaseñor y Tovar as an ancestor. There are a couple
more that if I had their great-grandparents info I would most likely be
able to find our common ancestor. If enough people did this then we could
triangulate and figure out which markers are for which ancestor and at the
same time some missing branches could be found for some people. I recommend
everyone, even siblings, parents, and aunts/uncles to take this test and to
look closely at their matches no matter how distant the match seems to be.
