The Haciendas of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico
Hi everyone,
I was looking at a number of pictures of the ex-haciendas of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico in a picture album of photos.
My family is from Huejuquilla, a nearby village along with the ranchos.
I was impressed with the pictures of the haciendas and did not realize how much of a history we had in our region back in the colonial days.
I wonder what it must have it looked like in our region with the haciendas in their full glory.
I saw an article in the online Zacatecas Newspaper about the idea of restoring the haciendas.

Dear Group,
My brother recently tested with Nat Geo Geno 2 and his paternal branch is R-Z198. I've uploaded the info to FTDNA and it displayed R1b11a2a1a instead of R-Z198. Where can I find a site that gives equivilants, allowing me to research on other sites using either of these nomenclatures. I've googled R-Z198 and there appears to be a lot of opinions, controversy, and uncertainty. Thank you for any help. Alice
Yiddish con Salsa: The Jews of Latin America
This sounds like an interesting workshop with Ilan Stavans at the National
Yiddish Book Center in western MA, the weekend of April 19. It is a little
pricey, though. I am unable to consider attending it since I already have
travel plans that conflict.

Bill,
That information helps me tremendously. And, I'm working on tracing Michaela Macías and her parents, Juan de Santiago and María Gertrudis Gómez, right now. I had a question on two of the other names I was researching, Vásquez and Garcia, I was re-reading as best I could the baptism record of Miguel Vásquez: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18688-52080-67?cc=1874591&wc…
And, I'm wondering if I'm reading the names of the grandparents wrong. I thought it said for the paternal grandparents Leonardo Vásquez and Susana Garcia and the maternal grandparents as Sinforiano Garcia and Donaciana Vejar, but I don't show any records of anyone married or the children of anyone with those names?

Luis Antonio Munoz ?
Hola Members/Parientes, I was researching a Luis Antonio Munoz whom I found -born 20 of Feb. 1740 in San Juan de Los Lagos .Bautismos -1737-1745 Image # 179, Born to Juan Joseph Munoz and Maria Ana Ramirez. This Luis Munoz married a Francisca Xaviera Gonzalez 14 of Jan. 1768 in Jalostotitlan-Matrimonios-1748-1768 Image #682.
Another Luis Antonio Munoz I found -
Born 20 of July 1738 in San Juan de los Lagos-Bautismo 1737-1745 Image #84. Son of Manuel Munoz de Nava and Juana Maria Martin del Campo. This Luis Munoz married Maria de La Merced Gutierrez de Mendoza 19 of April 1763 in Jalostotitlan. -matrimonios :1748-1768-Jalostititlan.
The point is in a nut shell ,I went to Geneanet -Javier Sanchez Ruiz --looked under Manuel Munoz de Nava Ramirez de Hermosillo married to Juana Maria Martin del campo and their son Luis Antonio married to Francisca Gonzalez. The matrimonial record shows different ,why would this site show other wise ? This is a error messes up the the info that follows. I wonder if Javier Sanchis Ruiz proof his given info ? Just words of thought.

Need help please: Alida, Mexico part of Zacatecas?
Hello,
I am having some trouble trying to pin-point where my great-grandfather, Tranquilino Rangel, on my mother's side is from. On his WWI Draft Registration Card, it states that he was born on Sept., 6, 1891 in Alida, Mexico.
When I try different search engines, there are no results. But when I use the Ancestry.com map it shows a very rural section of Zacatecas.
Is anyone familiar with this area of the Zacatecas ?
Thank you for any help.

Estancia de San Nicolas en Jerez o Tepetongo
I have been researching my ancestors and I found Teodoro Valdes born in "Estancia de San Nicolas". Does anyone know if this is the same place as the "Estancia de Los Berumen"? The Baptismal Certificate is from 1787 in Tepetongo Zacatecas. I researched on the internet and I seem to find an Estancia de San Nicolas in the Municipio de Valparaiso Zacatecas. On the Jerez Facebook page they have a history of the town and Mention an Estancia de San Nicolas but they don't specify the location or any other details.
Any information anyone may have would be helpful.
Thanks
Difference between vecino and residente?
I always assumed that "vecino" and "residente" meant the same thing, referring to the place an individual resided. However, I'm reading a baptism certificate that really got me confused it says that the parents of the child were: "vecinos de la Agua Dulce y residentes en este Pueblo [Atotonilco el Bajo]"
Where did these people live, la Agua Dulce or Atotonilco el Bajo? These two locations are close to each other, but I'm comfused because I always thought vecino and residente were sYnonyms.

Parents of Diego de Lomelín (ca. 1668, husband of Gerónima de Liebana y Velasco)
The line I am researching is heavily documented down to Diego de Lomelín and his wife, Gerónima de Liebana y Velasco, by many baptisms of their (at least) eight children between 1692 and 1715, and by the baptism of Gerónima (wife of Diego) in 1675. So while the names of the parents of Gerónima are known with certainty (Juan Basilio de Velasco and Nicolasa de Liebana), those of the parents of Diego de Lomelín are not.
Does anyone have proof of the parentage of Diego de Lomelín? All of his children except the last (in 1715) were baptised in Ayo el Chico.
Best wishes,

What Church Records?
Which Church records should I search for a 1781 Baptism account of Gertrudis Herrera born in Rancho Maria de la Torre, Zacatecas? I've looked through Momax (that is where I found her marriage record), and Zacatecas without any success. There seems to be quite a few options.

clarification please
Good Evening Grupo,
Hope all had a good holiday season. A resolution of mine is to get back to my genealogical research even though brick walls can be so frustrating!
The link is to the "report" by the bishop of Guadalajara's visit to Monterrey in 1741. I'd like help translating what is said on the bottom of the right hand side of image 195. Specifically what is written about Martin Arrambide, my 7xgrandfather. I believe he's being appointed to start a school, but I'm wondering if his age or nationality are mentioned.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Leonor de Valderrama, Diego Sotelo, Cristobal Onate, Martin Cortes conspiracy
Re: the Sotelo family, the Martin Cortes conspiracy
In a comment to Lawrence Bouett's post about the parentage of Francisca Gabay, I provided a link to a text where there is interesting information about Diego Sotelo and his family. Below is the title of the text, which I should have included in my comment:
"Noticia histórica de la conjuracion del marques del Valle. Años de 1565-1568. Formada en vista de nuevos documentos originales, y seguida de un estracto de los mismos documentos"
http://www.archive.org/stream/noticiahistrica00berrgoog/noticiahistrica…
The text is provided through archives.org, an internet site supported by, among others, the National Science Foundation and the Library of Congress.
If you are interested in Leonor Valderrama Moctezuma and Diego Sotelo and their fate in the 1560's, you might find parts of this text interesting. For example, Diego's family was living in Michoacan while he was on trial - by that time, Leonor was dead and he had married Dona Maria Tramuel.Diego's parents and where they came from in Spain are also named in the text (under testimony by his brother Baltasar).
If you are a descendent of Cristobal Onate and Catalina Salazar, there is a section on him as well, as he was one of those accused of being part of the Martin Cortes conspiracy.
There are other cases (persons) in this text, but these two are the ones I focused on...

Two recent 'brick walls': José Navarro and Juana Flores, and Perfecto Gonzalez
I have had extraordinary success in conducting research on a friend's (primarily) Jalisco genealogy, much of it back to the late 16th- and early 17th-Centuries; but there remain several brick walls that are much more recent. Here are two of them:
José Navarro and Juana Flores are the parents of María Macedonia Navarro Flores. Macedonia, as she was known, married José Juan Campos (of the Martín del Campo line) Maldonado 07 January 1884 in Tecualtitán, Zapotlán del Rey. Her age was given in the record as 20, the daughter of José Navarro and Juana Flores. She was "... originaria y vecina de las Presas ...". I have been unable to find any further information about her birth date (and even location, for that matter), nor anything further about her parents, except that they are listed as abuelos in records of the births of Macedonia's children. Any information on this puzzle is greatly appreciated.
And even more recently: Sylviano Gonzalez married María Aurelia Reynoso in Guadalajara 03 March 1928. Sylviano's parents are given as Perfecto Gonzalez and María Josefina de Jesús Barba Ruíz. Both Perfecto and Josefina are listed in the 1930 census, and Perfecto's birth place is given as Zacatecas in the census. I have been able to trace Josefina's lineage back multiple generations, but Perfecto Gonzalez is a complete mystery to me. Again, any information is greatly appreciated.
Sometimes, these modern 'brick walls' persist for a long time; I went for more than 25 years without documentation for one of my own great-grandfathers, but when I was finally able to climb over the brick wall, I found him in Maryland and his family in Germany for multiple generations.
These two Mexican puzzles have confounded me for more than a year and a half.
Best wishes,
Lawrence Bouett
