I am looking for information about my great-great grandfather...who was
murdered by Pancho Villas' soldiers. My maiden name is Chavez. My
grandfather's name is Manuel Chavez.
Can you possibly direct me to records that have history on this event?

For Hector Felix Aizcorbe

Hello Hector,

I noticed in your response to Linda that you have a lot of info on
Jerez. Would you please check your data to see if you have anyone
with the surnames "LIENDO" and/or "DE LA ROSA".......these are my
direct ancestors and the time frame would be around the late 1600s or
early 1700s in Zacatecas.......I am not certain exactly where in
Zacatecas they were from but I believe it could be near the city of
Zacatecas or the area near there.

Any info you may have will certainly be appreciated.......I have been
looking for them for a very long time! :-)

new gedcom

I wanted to let you know that I've updated my gedcom on Rootsweb.com. I tried putting it into the gedcom section on this site but it timed out, too large. To get in to my file the easiest way is my grandfathers name and dob. Epitacio Castanon 1894, once there you can go to the index to see the surnames I have in my records. The surnames are mainly from Zacatecas, Jalisco and Michoacan with a few from Colima who married into families in Jalisco. I see so many of the same names and hyphenated names over and over again and have to think our ancestors traveled a lot more than we sometimes give them credit for! I have over 47,000 names and hope they are of use to some of you. If you find errors please let me know so I can make corrections. I do update periodically.

I also wanted to thank so many of you for sharing your records, knowledge and expertise so openly and of course to Joseph Puentes for the website that allows us to do this.

Parish Records

My last posting where I listed names of ancestors marriage records for Guadalajara, I found out from my mother that she has their photos, so I will be able to add those to my album on Nuestros Ranchos, as well. She has a photo of Ysmael Martin del Campo and many others I had not known she had pictures of before.

Additional records found are, as follows, same film number from the LDS microfilm collection, 0038507, Guadalajara Church Records 1868-1898, Santuario de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe:

Tomas Martin del Campo, 25, and Refugio Aguila, 24; October 16, 1881; groom's parents are Tomas Martin del Campo and Nieves Cacillas, both deceased; bride's parents are Tomas Aguila and Dolores Rojas Vertir?, both deceased. This is very close, but I'm not sure if it is related to my Tomas Martin del Campo and Nieves Muniz, who had a son named Tomas, Ysmael's brother. The age matches up, though.

Ysac Alatorre, 22, and Ysabel Cabral, 18; June 18, 1890 in Belen; groom's parents are Sixto Alatorre, living and Jesus Gonzalez, deceased; bride's parents are Benigno Cabral, deceased and Pioquinta Gonzalez, living. Ysabel is my grandmother's aunt. Her mother, Francisca Cabral and Ysabel were sisters. A 1930 census record I found for Los Angeles, lists a Jose Alatorre as Francisca's nephew, so I think this may be the connection, Jose's parent's marriage record. Does anyone know where Belen is? I can't find it on a map.

Juan Martin del Campo, 25, and Elodia Romero, 23; February 9, 1891; groom's parents are Rosalio Martin del Campo and Maria de los Dolores Munoz; bride's parents are Juan N. Romero and Maria del Refugio Zunega. This is close, as well, but I don't know if they are or are not related.

PBS Channel and Inheritance

Today, I caught a glimpse of Oprah Winfrey show where ancestry research has
been done for famous people of today.

Of particular note was watching the African American comedian, Chris Rock
when he was told that his ancestor was a slave, who became a high raking Union
soldier, and before he died, had amassed a great deal of property (60 +
acres).

Chris's interview was very moving....he said that had he known that his
ancestors came from "intellect", he might have had hope for himself. Instead, he
believed his immediate environment of gloom and felt "lucky" that he had
bumped into his current profession. How sad, because he still does not equate
his "wit" to intelligence. It is also sad for many other reasons.

In the end, he had wished that he had known about his family heritage....he
professes that he would have probably believed in himself worthy enough to
enter a profession of "intellect".

In the meantime, Oprah discovered that she came from a long line of
teachers. We all know how much she LOVES teachers and strongly believes in
education.

Hmmm.....I think they are "discovering" about "sangre y como llama la
sangre". What have you discovered about your ancestors that resonates within you?

"The Rulebook"

I hope you all who requested this got an idea in my previous post how life and family was along time ago. I too, find it very awkward and confusing. Well the fact is there wasnt really a rulebook, it was more of a i dont think system is a good word, but it was a...i cant find the word, but system is close enough. Let us take the Camino and Vásquez families. The Caminos from Mariáno or his father Eúgenio. And the Vásquez from Pablo Básquez-Ruíz de Esparza. Mariáno had 13 children and Pablo had 8. Lets say, a María Camino married José Básquez. and Salvador Camino married Mariána Básquez. Each Camino or Básquez are siblings. María Camino's daughter Josefina Básquez would marry her cousin Pancho Camino, son of Salvador and Mariána. Each family at least married once or twice in thier own family. But never with their identical cousin, like if Salvador Camino and Celso Camino, children were two marry, it wouldnt take place. It had to be children of sibling of the opposite gender. Like Salvador and María Camino's children were able to marry. We think maybe this was dont because the same gender of parents would cause the children to deform? Im not sure either. Then their children started to marry within other family like the Robles, García and Rentería families. The other families also followed this system of opposite gender siblings. 30 years later we had Camino marrying a Camino and a Camino marrying a García, the Camino child of the first would married the other coples Camino child then Camino Camino...so on...Another reason why our family did this is because the main original pueblo of the Hacienda, was in the Valley, which is 20 miles from the capital of Huanusco. They
didnt bother to go so far too marry. So they stayed their and found their spouse "Their Cousin". My mom's pedigree has the same people multiple times. I come from D. Theódoro García de León about 16 times! My Grandfather is the nephew of my grandmother's mother! I hope you guys have learned more about me and my fun fun family. -Dániel Méndez del Camino

Leon Covarrubias from Huejucar

Arturo,

Is the surname Covarrubias a name made up of two separate names... ?

Arturo and Jose, have either one of you in your search of the Covarrubias surname come across or know of a linking with members of the Corbera/Corvera family?

Rosalio Oñate Help

Dear Leticia, Thank you so much for responding. Yours is a good idea to make a list of any possible leads from the phone books, while I'm there. If I find alot of Onates there, I'll obtain a copy of the book itself! Unfortunately, I have no living older relatives (that I know of) from which to get any guidance. So I really do appreicate your help. Being new to genealogy, I fully expected to get several responses from the experienced members of our group. For the past year I've read every email posted and I recall emails from others that have taken a similar trip and I hoped they could share tips for success. Again, my call for help goes out, and my thanks for your idea and well wishes. Alice BB

When you are there check the phone book, look for Oñate and make phone calls regarding your ggrandpa, identify yourself inmediatly and than make your request clearly, cause of phone calls that bad people make asking for monetary help, nowadays people hesitate to give up info, so one better give up info first. Look for anyone with similar names such any Rosalio, as it is usual to name children arter relatives. Look in the surrounding towns phone books also, make a list first so you can carry it back in case time is not enough. That is an idea, good luck. Maybe a name will ring off the memory afterwards.

Do you have and old relative close? Talk about your trip, comment about names and related places. Maybe it will ring the bell.

humble and troubled

In my experience, regarding contacting relatives, there are some issues to consider.

Personaly is been sweet-sour cause it is a joy to see the faces of those I long to see, ´cause at last a name from the past has a face in the present, it is an intimate joy that maybe those persons take for "a curiosity not so clear".

I had contact some primos by phone, some of them looking also into genealogy, then I feel troubled cause there are no more stuff to share; and if meeting personaly there are no common interests.

Then if contacted by mail it is euforic and enthusiastic, but when by phone it sounds tensionated.

I feel like I have to stablish a relationship, and knowing myself that is not precisely what I want, in most cases.

There we have an issue. One has to be concious first about the object of interest, data or relationship or both? And then
to have a good plan for those we are meeting to fully understand what are we looking for and what are we doing with the data we ask for,

A person could not accept that an "unknown" one is asking for names, places and dates, and is not writing a book.

Is it a community feeling or am I alone in the corner?

What would be a good plan to be wellcome by a recently contacted relative?

Greetings.

My Introduction- Veronica Lopez Viramontes

Hi,
my name is Veronica Lopez. My parents and most of my grandparents come from
JALPA, ZACATECAS. I understand from reading previous posts that the records
for that town are very skimpy.

My maternal grandfather's name was Juvenal VIRAMONTES. He had at least 3
siblings (Benjamin, Ramiro, Enriqueta) but from what I understand, they were
raised by an aunt and uncle. According to my mother's birth certificate, my
grandfather's father's name was Benjamin Viramontes and his mother's name
was Antonia RENTERIA.

My paternal grandmother's name was Concepcion MAGALLANES and she was the
daughter of Concepcion Magallanes (father) and Simona BECERRA. Simona's
father (my gg grandfather) was Lino BECERRA.

My paternal grandfather's name was Prudenciano LOPEZ, son of Anastacio Lopez
and Clara GONZALEZ.

Most of what I know is from my father's memory and most of what he remembers
(surprisingly well) are names of many cousins and aunts and uncles.

I'm not sure where to start, so I'd appreciate any help.

Veronica

Some History on Huanusco and La Luz before the "Rulebook"

At the request of some members I decided to give a brief to the point explanation on how families in Huanusco marry. But I decieded to split this topic on two. Well basically we (our hacienda) started with 12 families. They had the opportunity to live anywhere on the 30,000 acre plot of land, which made up La Luz. At the height of La Luz around 1913 it would prob be 30,000 or so. After all those marriages, purchases and tradings...and compromises. Because it reached into Calvillo and Tabasco and Jalpa. Jesus Maria was a small hacienda. San PEdro was the same size or so as La Luz. Luckily San PEdro was owned by Cousins the Duran, also Jesus Maria the Rodriguez family and La Luz by the Camino Family. All were related. So I think thats why my grandpa says our family got away from all sorts of things. Like a tío would be the Sherrif or the cousin the Bishop or another cousin the banker and so on. Anyway the families were. There were others. but these were the big hanchos of MAriano Camino, the HAcendado, his confidants if you will. I descend from all except D. Vargas, D. Jiménez, D. Sánchez, D. Ruíz de Esparza, because they hadn't fufill the compromises or rules whatever. The families were interesting back then with all the rules. Most marriages almost all were arranged. It was very rare to get arranged with someone you loved. *Note some of these families were already intermarried before they arrived, which made everything even worse! Now days what Im told the hacienda is owned by one of Manuel Camino "El curajudo"'s
grandsons. Manuel was the son of the Hacendado.

Basically these families for the next 200 years would intermarried extensively. Cousins/cousins, tios/sobrinas, tias/sobrinos, 1st cousins, step siblings and step cousins even though they were already related! Almost all the men had another lover besides the wife, guess what his lover would be a cousin. Or the sister of the wife. IT WAS CRAZY, reminds me of the European Royals. So for all of you who will travel to Beautiful La Luz one day and meet someone with these last name you'll know who they descend from. The interesting is none of them got dispensations! to marry! NONE! The Bishops were all related. Im not sure how they got away with it. Some did practice polygamy or at least had multiple women at a time. Well "La Luz" has an interesting land structure its situated in a Valley and the other half is on the hills. They do the Magay and Wine business thingy not sure, I dont know much of Alcohol, since of my age. Theres la hacienda and within that there are many ranchos. and also el pueblo de la luz itself. It sounds like a municipio all by it's self. But the gov't says its part of Huanusco. La Luz has always been a problem because of Politics, 1/2 is in Huanusco, and 1/2 is in Calvillo, Ags. The state still wants to claim this land as part of Zacatecas or Aguas. -well it's late...Ill explain the rule book tomorrow now that you who requested this have some idea on whats going on. -Dániel Méndez del Camino

New Family Search Website Update

Im not supposed to be doing this but since I have made so many wonderful people here on ranchos, I couldnt keep this to myself. The new website isn't officially launched but is now functioning as Beta 2 or 3 is now starting. It's quite LONG! The new website can only be accessed my church members for now but to see if we can play around with it before it goes public.

Here's the website if anyone wants to see at least the Home Page:
www.new.familysearch.org

In the future we will all have to register. The project is at a goal by 2012 all the microfilm will be scanned and the official webpage will go Live. BUT if you like you can sign up to help with the new microfilm, the email address is at the bottom. Im going to register soon. This is different from the first registration if anyof you participated in the first website at FamilySearch Labs.

Heres an update:

New FamilySearch
The LDS Church is currently developing a web application for church membership (and, eventually, everyone) to be able to interact with a very large, unified database full of connected genealogical information. When fully released, it will replace the current FamilySearch.org.
Most of the development work on the new system takes place in offices in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building on Temple Square, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Some prominent features of the new website are:
Support for multiple assertions on facts, allowing people to "agree to disagree".
Very comprehensive source citations, including links to source images. This promised linking service may not be available in earlier versions. Documents scanned from the Church's 2.4 million rolls of microfilmed vital records, from around the world, will eventually be linked to individuals in the system. These films are currently being scanned and indexed, for more details see the Church's FamilySearchIndexing web site.
Several features will be specific to the membership of the LDS Church, facilitating temple ordinance work.
This new system will be a one world pedigree of linked families. Users will not be able to change others entries but may post their disagreements next to other's versions. Users will be able to edit their own prior entries.
The Beta2 test version has a mapping utility which maps locations where an individual has resided. By clicking on the link a pop up displays the events that took place at that location, i.e.: birth, marriage, death, etc.
The new system will be released in phases starting with smaller temple districts for members of the Church only. After temple districts in all areas of the world are online, it will be opened to everyone.
Digitization and indexing projects
The Family History Library (FHL) is in the process of digitizing its entire microfilm collection. ScanStone, which was developed by the LDS Church, is a system (both hardware and software) to rapidly create digital images of genealogical records contained on microfilm. When fully implemented, the FHL will be able to convert 370,000 rolls of microfilm per year into digital images. It is estimated that the digitizing project will be completed about 2012.
An online index to the digitized records is also being created using FamilySearch Indexing software developed by the LDS Church. The church hopes to recruit tens of thousands of volunteers to complete the indexing project. Volunteers can participate by going to the Church's FamilySearchIndexing web site. The databases containing the digital images and indexes will be added to the FamilySearch website as they become available.
By now most of the genealogical community has heard about the new FamilySearch™ system the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is developing, but fewer have heard of the Help Center. The Help Center is a web–based program designed to provide a self-service support environment for the new FamilySearch.

Among the exciting additions of the Help Center are the Research Advice Forums. These online communities will provide users a chance to ask their research questions and allow other users with research experience to share their knowledge. The forums will be available in eight languages, and will eventually cover every country of the world.

Research Advice Forums

FamilySearch Support (part of the Family and Church History Department) has been given the task to provide family history research support worldwide. Since volunteers in family history centers and genealogical societies collectively possess so much research knowledge, FamilySearch Support has created an online environment where these people can share their knowledge with those looking for help with their family history.

The Research Advice Forums are different than any other genealogical forum online. How many times have you asked a question in an online forum and never received an answer? Research Advice Forums will be different. FamilySearch Support will actively manage its forums and notify the forum moderator of any questions that have gone unanswered for a given amount of time. The forum moderator will then ask a research specialist to answer the user’s question.

The forums also have a dynamic search feature. Every time a question is asked and answered it is automatically added to the Help Center’s knowledge base of answers. The knowledge base contains forum posts, websites, authored articles, and Family History Library publications. As questions are asked and answered, websites added, and new articles written, the Help Center’s knowledge base will continue to grow.

Testing the New System

My Introduction -- Joseph de Leon

My name is Joseph de Leon. My ancestral roots come from both HUEJUCAR & ,COLOTLAN, JALISCO and JEREZ, ZACATECAS. Some of the surnames of my ancestors are: DE LEON, CARLOS, BANUELOS, FLORES, COVARRUBIAS, VILLANEDA, and many others.

My father's name is Elias de Leon who was born 20 Jul 1904 in Huejucar, Jalisco and my mother is Maria del Transito Carlos who was born 15 Aug 1909 in Zacatecas, Zac. probably in Jerez, Zac. because that's where most of her ancestors are from.

The FLORES and BANUELOS Trees are mutual ancestral trees for our cousins the Banuelos. We share the same GGGGGF Diego Flores born about 1730 (ancestors of my father's mother Petra Flores). We also share the same GGGGGF Jasinto Banuelos born about 1755 (ancestors of my mother's GM Vicenta Banuelos). You could say that my parents were Kissing-Kousins!

I'd like to visit both Huejucar and Jerez sometime this spring 2008 and see my ancestral land before I die. I know that I have many CARLOS cousins in Zacatecas who have never heard of me. In addition, I don't know of a single DE LEON cousin (that I may have) and my ultimate goal is find a living descendant primo!

My goal is to learn when and where my grandfather Francisco de Leon Covarrubias was born and when and where he died. He was probably born Abt. 1880 in Huejucar and probably died Abt. 1910-1915 in Piedras Negras but I don't have the proof. He was a music composer ( I still have his original music scores) who was beaten to death by Pancho Villa's thugs because they thought (that since his cousin was the mayor of that town) that he had the keys to the local bank.

His father was Nicolas de Leon Martinez (also a music composer) who was married to Refugio Covarrubias on 08 Jun 1866 in Huejucar, Jalisco. I have Nicolas' original love sonnet that he wrote to his sweetheart. My goal is to also learn when and where he was born and died. He was probably born in Huejucar Abt. 1846

My siblings and my sons all inherited my grandfather's love of music and the arts and they compose music and are artists as well.

Batch numbers

I have printed out the batch numbers given on the website for Aguascalientes, but the year I need is not on the list. Under birth, I need 1882. Can anyone tell me where I can find birth records for that year? I am looking for Cruz Bustamante B. 1882. I can't seem to find his parents. I have found another Cruz Bustamante born in 1878 which could be his father, but I'm not sure. Any help will be appreciated.

Batch Numbers for Aguascalientes (and others)

Lupe Kerr,

Most of the LDS (Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints) Family History Library films are NOT indexed into Batch Numbers; but information can be researched by reading the respective microfilms from the Library

In your case, the referenced film #299917 (Batch C001664) relates to 1887-1903 Baptisms of Hijos Naturales registered in the Senor del Encino Parish of Aguascalientes, --- and you indicate the need for information about an Aguascalientes birth (Cruz Bustamante) presumed to have occurred in 1882.

Therefore, I suggest you consult directly the following films of the Records from this Parish ....

Film #299916 --- 1854 to 1887 Baptisms of Hijos Naturales
Fim #299888 --- 1881 to 1885 Baptismos de Hijos Legitimos

Best of luck in your research.

can't open Word. What setting do I put for "Char set"? What email address do
I send it to? Most of my entries don't have the relevant microfilm source
noted. Should I wait to send it until I do?

Raquel:

There are two ways you can partition out your PAF file in a manner that would
be appropriate for submission to your folder:

>From the "Print Reports" menu item (the little printer icon) and then
clicking the "Books" tab, you can print out an Ahenetafel report directly from
PAF showing your relevant grandfather's ancestors. This also eliminates (I
presume) all living people that might be in that PAF file. You can then print
out the report to a RTF or preferably a PDF file and submit that file.

You can create a GEDCOM of your grandfather's ancestors using the "Export"
menu item (the little disk with an out arrow). Click "Other GEDCOM" then
select "Partial" under the "Filter" option. Click the "Select" button on the
lower right and then find your relevant grandparent and select "All ancestral
related" under the "Relationship Filter" option and then the "Select" button.
Then Click "OK" and finally the "Export" button. We can then upload the
GEDCOM to our GEDCOM database which other members can search.
