Necesito opiniones.Saludos.Jorge Luis Ramírez Gómez.

Sephardic connections

_http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/Diaspora.html_
(http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/Diaspora.html) This link gives
a very brief overview of the Jewish Diaspora during the first century.

I am a double Villarreal from my father's side of the family, with surnames
of Trevino, Elizondo and others attached to me. One of my male cousins did
the DNA test...and like others have said....it appears we have the Jewish link.

When I brought this subject up to my aunt, she said that she knew all along.
In fact, a Torah was found in one of the ancestral homes..in between the
adobe walls...in Coahuila (Villarreal and Trevinos had come from Nuevo Leon
around 1830). Is this true, or family folklore...I will never know. But she did
not deny our Jewish ancestry.

My grandmother was the only person in the whole town who declared herself a
Protestant in the census. I wonder if this was her way of somehow rebelling
against the Catholic Church...guess I will never really know.

Jewish History

My gg-grandfather Ismael Martin del Campo and his siblings were born in
Lagos de Moreno. I found a website that was in Spanish about Lagos, but the
English translation made it read pretty funny. From what I could make out,
it was telling about the Jewish history of Lagos de Moreno. I am very
interested in this as it pertains to my ancestral research and my desire to
know of my ethnic origins.

>From what I have gathered from this translation, when the Jews were being
driven out of Spain during Queen Isabella's reign, they were given
the choice to go to New Spain. So, 50 or 60 families of Sephardic Jews came
to New Spain and established Lagos de Moreno as their colony. Apparently,
the word "Sephardic" is the Hebrew word for "Spain." So Sephardic Jews are
Spanish Jews.

Anyways, at this point in my research, it seems I am getting beyond what my
mother's family knew and am beginning to head into new territory. So, my
efforts are hit and miss. But, it doesn't discourage me, but instead makes
it seem more like an exploration.

Does anyone know of a website or book I could look for that would have more
on this history? In doing my research, the history of the areas interests
me as much as the family search does.

Jewish Influences in the Jalisco Highlands

Corrine,

Many of my family members have done dna testing. The Mexican is a mixed lot. Many of my Villarreal cousins have tested and the testing indicates and traditions suggest a jewish heritage. Then there is my mother's maternal grandfther who's gene's were tested cpurtesy of my mother's maternal cousin revealed that my great grandfather's line was celtic. Then there are my Arriola cousin's tests that reaveal them to be Trevino Velasco and that is my maternal grandfather's line that show's them to be semitic but I not sure if they were jews. Then there is my father's line the Arredondos, care of my brother. His test also revealed a semetic heritage which I believe might be Greek. My brother also did a mitochrondial test to reveal an indian heritage.

So you see, we are not just one of anything.

Conference in Coahuila

Dear Ranchos members,

Sorry it's taken so long to write and share my experiences with all of you regarding the 3er Conferencia Bi-Niacional Genealogica de Coahuila.

It was an amazing event, much more than I expected. First of all Maria Cortez and I met up with 3 members of Nuestros Ranchos, Mickey Garcia, Josie Treviño and Wellester Alvarado. That was number one on my list, not only because they are Ranchos members and I felt as if I'd already known them but because they were so kind and gracious, taking us under their wing, introducing us to almost everyone as they knew almost everyone.

Josie, Mickey and Wellester..........muchas gracias!!

Because of Josie and Mickey's connections we were able to visit with the Director of the Archivo General del Estado de Coahuila, Miguel Angel Muñoz, Borrego on Friday afternoon at the Archivo General. What warm and gracious people.

We also had the opportunity to meet Benicio Samuel of the group, Genealogia del Norte de Mexico.

The speakers were all impressive but being from Zacatecas I was especially interested in Dr Jose Enciso Contreras' presentation, and I was not disappointed.
Two of the presenters were from Dallas Tx, the Cuellar brothers gave their presentation dealing primarily with family research how to do it and the dedication and perseverance it takes for anyone who undertakes this daunting, lifelong journey.
Maestra Marta Duron's presentation was focused on the families originating from Los Altos de Jalisco and her studies and theories as to why so many families from Los Altos inter-married with each other. She used Jalostitlan as her primary area of focus radiating from there to other towns and cities of Los Altos.

All in all it was an uplifting, eye-opening and inspiring conference. Maria and I came away with many new ideas which we hope to bring to our Northern California Group. We have invited Josie and Mickey to come to Northern California to do a presentation for our group and we hope they will accept our invitation.

We were even bolder in that we had dinner with Dr Jose Enciso Contreras and his wife and extended an invitation to them as well and he indicated he would be willing to come and to speak to our group. The Cuellar brothers from Dallas Texas also said they would be willing to come. All in all it was a wonderful experience.
In the future I can see one of our group leaders, either Joseph Puentes, Arturo Ramos or Jonathan Walker or someone else from Nuestros Ranchos at this convention as a speaker and representative of this ever-growing group. I hope I didn't put foot in mouth by suggesting this but I think all we can do is move forward, not backwards and this would be a big move forward.

Well I'd better get off my box, just thought I would share the highlights of our trip...everything was a highlight, there were no low lights. :)

Saludos a todos.

Zacatecans in Durango

I came across 2 Zacatecan families last night when searching civil birth records in Panuco de Coronado, Durango, while doing some research on my paternal grandmother's line. I noted them just in case they are of value to anyone in the group. It was an Oct 25, 1898 posting for the birth of Maria Teresa de Jesus Soto. Parents were Solome Soto, 20, and Maria Josefa Sauzedo, 15. Paternal abuelos were Cresencio Soto, deceased, and Maria Eulalia Guay, 38. Maternal abuelos were Julian Sauzedo, 40, and Maria Lecaria Sauzedo, 38. Parents and grandparents all from Zacatecas.

Jewish Influences in the Jalisco Highlands

HI,

Do any of your results match my Romero's J2b1b (old J2e2)? My
Romero's are from Tepatitlan de Morelos, Jalisco. I have traced them
back to Serapio Romero, born about 1820. My grandmother's DNA is
lost. Her only daughter had no children and I don't know of any
other direct female descendants.

reseaching baptism film from Jerez Zacatecas Mexico

Just wanted to let anyone who is researching in Jerez Zacatecas Mexico that I am working on Baptisms 1836 to 1840 #0439851. If anyone needs a look up please let me know. I'd be happy to check for you. I'm finding it to be a very important film for his area of research since the years from 1841 to 1866 are missing. I would also be glad to share whatever film information I have for this area. I can send an atttachment of whatever films I have copied. You can contact me directly at longsjourney@hotmail.com.

Estrataficaion de la Sociedad en Nueva Espana

Hola Bill...

I think it depended on time frame (era) and where the Africans or mulattos
lived (urban vs country). Keep in mind that owning an African slave to be a
house servant was considered very prestigious because they were very
expensive. Further, they were trusted more than the Native Americans, as the original
settlers always feared being over-thrown by the Native Americans. Finally,
they resisted the diseases brought in by the Spanish. The treatment of slaves
in the sugar fields and the mines was atrocious....many died as a result of
mistreatment.....and were definitely the bottom of the caste system.

So in other words, the African slave in an urban setting may have been more
valued, but like you, I don't think they were considered desirable....as
relates to the caste system.

preparación o estudio ("low skill or entry jobs"). Eso muchas veces puede
crear fricciones entre grupos étnicos diferentes. A ver tú que opinas.

A couple of "fun-facts"

On the "lighter" side:
Thanks to my primos here at NuestrosRanchos who helped me confirm my DE LEON family tree I was able to find a couple of "fun-facts".

1. Even though my parents were double-related as cousins., I was able to connect them (triple-cousins) to Martin de Enriqyes ( b. abt. 1675). My father Elias de Leon (1904-1999) is his direct 8th descendant (12 generations) and my mother Maria Carlos (1909-1992) is his 9th direct descendant (13 generations). Double Whammy! Am I my mother's equal cousin ????

2. My earliest direct ancestor is Manuel de Leon and his wife Josepha de Escovedo (both born abt. 1680 ). They had several children but two of their sons' children married each other. Since both of my GGGGGGPs (who were married to each other) were DE LEON "primo-hermanos" and direct grandchildren of Manuel and Josepha who were my "double" GGGGGGGPs, am I a "double" DE LEON ???? Ha Ha!

The Americas

I haven't fully checked out this site but if you type in "Mexico" in the
search engine you'll come up with several pages of art and who knows
what other things might be found:

http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/online_tours/americas.aspx

10. British Museum: The Americas
http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/online_tours/americas.aspx

Over the past few years, the British Museum has continued to expand their
online offerings. In their "Explore" area, they have created a number of
online tours that explore Asia, Africa, ancient Greece, Egypt, and Japan.
This particular online tour covers the Americas through a number of thematic
collections culled from their vast holdings. Visitors might wish to start by
looking over the tour that includes images of kayak clothing from Greenland,
as it provides some nice images and a number of insights into how kayakers
past and present cope with the bone-chilling cold of the Arctic region.
Moving on, the site also includes a tour titled "Unknown Amazon". Here,
visitors can learn about the people who have inhabited the Amazon River
basin over the past several thousand years. [KMG]

Hello all!

I'm "stuck" with my research again. This time it's with my Gonzalez Family in Juchipila, Zacatecas. It ends with Bruno Gonzalez and Maria Prudencia Castaneda who are my 3rd ggrandparents.

A while back I found out that my 2nd ggrandparents, Ynes Gonzalez and Ines Hernandez baptized a daughter in Tecolotlan, Jalisco. Do any of you have information on this baptism? I may be able to continue my research with that record since there has been no further luck in Juchipila.
