Municipalities to find towns, cities, communities and villages in the States

Hi everyone,

I found this great site to find towns, cities, ranches in states. I use this a lot when reading ancestry documents from family search and ancestry to figure out where my family members came from as well as when I can't find documents from one municipal I go to another one near by the ranch or city.

https://en.mexico.pueblosamerica.com/

I hope this can help others.

Degollado Ties

I recently learned that my mother's family came from Degollado, not La Barca as previously thought. Many members here have been helpful and supportive in the past so I wanted to post this update and hope for some possible links. The names I am now "researching" are: Bravo, Tinoco, Rizo, Ponce, Santana. These surnames are all on my mother's side and in the Degollado area mid to late 1800's.
Many Thanks,
Michael Lopez Bravo

India laboria

Hi all,

In this passage does anyone know what the term india laboria means?

Maternal Grandparents

I am searching for my grandfather Rito Gonzales or(Gonzalez) born in vetagrande Zacatecas Mexico. Mother Tomasa Ramirez, father may be Antonio Gonzalez. Possible brothers Enrique and Marcos.

Also searching for my grandmother Leandra Castaneda. Mothers name may be Cecilia I don't know the maiden name. She was born in vetagrande Zacatecas Mexico. Unable to find any information on either grandparent. Can anyone help.

Juchipila padrones

Can anyone tell me if they have found any more padrones for Juchipila? I know of the 1819 and 1824 census records and I have searched those and found some pretty promising information but due to the lack of records for Juchipila before 1840, I was hoping to find more padrones. I am searching for records on the Castaneda family around that area, particularly a Rafael Castaneda, married to Simona Flores. Before searching the Juchipila and Moyahua padrones, I had no idea who Rafael's mother and father might be, but now I believe they may be Vicente Castaneda and Lugarda/Leogarda de Aro. This family was in the Moyahua census records in 1818 and then again a couple of years later, however this time, Lugarda was now a widow. Then they were all missing from the next Moyahua census BUT I later found Lugarda de Aro and some of her children in the 1824 Juchipila census (Rincon de Animas), including her 22 year old son, Rafael, and they are listed near a Flores family, including their 19 year old daughter, Simona. AND they are also listed just above another young Flores male married to a Castaneda female with the same name as a sister listed with Rafael while they were still living in Moyahua. It makes me think that maybe Rafael eventually married his sister's sister-in-law. So maybe brother and sister were married to a brother and sister. But they would have been married and starting their family in Juchipila during a time that Juchipila's records are missing. Eventually there are records listing them as grandparents in Juchipila, Moyahua, and Mezquital del Oro, but I am hoping to find that one record that tells me THESE two people (Rafael and Simona) did marry each other and if so, they are probably my great, great, great grandparents. I still have hope i will find a later Juchipila census that shows them married. Those census records also make me think Vicente Castaneda was the brother of Manuel Castaneda, married to Antonia Nunes in Moyahua. And their parents may have been Manuel Castaneda and Antonia de la Torre. I put that out there to hopefully find someone searching for the same family.

HELP TRANSLATING DOCUMENTS

Hello,

I am asking for help translating this document from the Family Search Guadalajara Marriage dispensations. Microfilm 168605, Guadalajara Dispensas 1700-1705, Image 312, # 223.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-DJLN-W?i=312&wc=125126…

This document is from 1702, about Nicolas de Escamilla from Aguascalientes. I am trying to determine if he is or is related to my my ancestor, Nicolas Joseph de Escamilla who married Michaela de Lomeli and then Maria Quiteria de Alfaro Perez in Jalisco. His son, Juan Manuel de Escamilla married Maria Quiteria de Alfaro Perez in Ayo el Chico in 1727.

I am not able to read or understand the document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

AGUASCALIENTES: Protocolos 1607-1608

Hola prim@s,

These are the protocolos of Domingo Hernandez Cordero, escribano nombrado of Aguascalientes. I think Jaime Holcombe mentioned these in his Cartas. At the time, Geronimo de Aguayo was Alcalde Mayor, and Juan Lopez de Lizardi was Alcalde Ordinario. Here are a few entries and my notes.
Enjoy!
Manny Diez Hermosillo

On 11 Aug 1607, Juan Garcia de Santa Ana remitted his testamento. I post this here, as a continuation of the denuncia against him, that I posted here at NR. Witnesses present were Padre Tomas Ruiz and Pedro Fernandez de Valdus. From what I can tell, Juan Garcia and his wife, Francisca de Castro, had no children, which is why we’ve never heard of them in genealogy circles.

Note: Padre Tomas Ruiz used to be the vicar of Villa de Lagos, back in the 1580-1590s; he was the one who brought accusations against his predecessor, Padre Alonso Lopez de Espinar, which I posted in another thread in this forum. He was also accused of “solicitante.” It appears he never left Los Altos.

On 11 Aug 1607, Gabriel Sanchez and his wife, Isabel Sanchez de Lara, residents of Aguascalientes, sold to Maria de Frias, widow of Pedro Gonzalez, a house, for 500 pesos. The house was located along the camino real, going towards Zacatecas, and included 2 parcels: one alongside, and the other nearby, used for cultivating wheat. Interestingly enough, though Isabel Sanchez couldn’t sign her name, when a witness in the process against Padre Alonso Lopez, some 15 years before, she was able to sign her name here!

On 13 Sep 1607, Juan Lopez de Lizardi (or Lizaldi - looks like an “r” in his signature. Anyone?), alcalde ordinario of Aguascalientes, sold the house in which he then lived, to Pedro Fernandez de Baldus, resident of Aguascalientes. The house, or houses, because apparently, there was more than one, were next to the lots owned by Nicolas Ramirez (my ancestor, twice). At the same time, he also sold Fernandez an estancia de ganado menor (sheep and goats), with its cavallerias de tierra (pastures), located about a half-league outside of Aguascalientes, “in a place called la Barranca, on the Cuisilco River, where it fed into the Morsenique River.” He sold the houses, estancia and land, for 250 pesos, which Fernandez paid in refined silver. I had read that Fernandez owned an hacienda called El Agostadero; I don’t know if this is the same hacienda.

On 02 Oct 1607, Alvaro de Ornelas and Gabriel Lopez, as his creditor, vecinos de la Villa de los Lagos and presently in Aguascalientes, signed a promissory note for various quantities of pesos, owed to Diego Muñoz. I descend from Alvaro de Ornelas’ daughter, Leonor de Mendoza cc Martin de Aguirre.

On 08 Oct 1607, Maria de Frias, widow of Pedro Gonzalez, leased the house and 2 orchards, that she had bought from Gabriel Sanchez & Isabel Sanchez de Lara, to Pedro Hernandez (de Vaulus), for 1 year, at the cost of 30 pesos. Looks like Pedro Hernandez (as he signed his name) was expanding. I descend from 2 of his daughters, Maria de Siordia cc Luis Medina and Petronila de Siordia cc Juan de Padilla. I should note that on this and on the previous document, Pedro Gonzalez’s name appears to be scratched out. Though I could make out a Pº Gˢ, I couldn’t be sure, until I saw him and Maria de Frias mentioned on the denuncia against Juan Garcia de Santa Ana! I wonder who he pissed off?

On 29 Nov 1607, Maria Rodriguez, resident of Aguascalientes, and widow of Juan de Montoro, remitted her testamento before Geronimo de Aguayo, Alcalde Mayor. She named as her albaceas Padre Tomas Ruiz, and Francisca de Castro, wife of Juan Garcia de Santa Ana, and her 5 children as her heirs: Juan Montoro, Cristobal Montoro, Mari Rodriguez, Ana Rodriguez and Ysabel Garcia. She mentions that she was a cofrade of the Cofradia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Ciudad de Mexico, which might place them in that city, before they migrated to Los Altos. I descend from their son, Juan de Montoro cc Catalina de Ayala. Maria Rodriguez and Juan de Montoro were founders of Aguascalientes, 25 years before Jamestown, and 300 years before Little House on the Prairie. Just sayin’

On 12 Dec 1607, Agustina de Viera, widow of Lorenzo Alvarez, and her son, Juan Alvarez, agreed to pay merchant Juan de Burgos 382 pesos y 7 tomines; 285 pesos & 2 tomines, which were owed him by Lorenzo Alvarez deceased, and the other 97 pesos 5 tomines, for clothing and other items, sent from his store to their hacienda. One of the testigos is Alvaro Carrillo, her son-in-law. I descend from Alvaro Carrillo cc Isabel Alvarez.

On 10 Feb 1608, Cristobal Loçano gave power of attorney to Juan de la Fuente, resident of Zacatecas. This one is a hard read. I descend from his daughter, Isabel de Islas Martinez Lozano cc Diego Delgado el Moso.

Complete list of caste terms

After 9 years of working on records, I came across "coiota" for the first time today. Thanks to a Portuguese-language web site's footnote I now know that it means media-mestiza/media-india.

But I was surprised that it was so difficult to find the meaning online -- and that I could not find a complete list of all the different caste terms used in Mexico over the centuries.

Does anyone know if there is such a list online?

Blas Romo De Vivar Y Getrudis Ramires

I am looking for any information on Blas Romo De Vivar and Getrudis Ramirez. I have them married in 1761 with the Parents of Blas being Bartolome Romo De Vivar and Margarita Moran De Ledesma. The Only record of Bartolome is Birth in 1673. Many have used that person to claim as the parent but it doesn't match up with Blas approximate age and date of birth. Does anybody have reasearch on thise person to clear that up?

ranchos map

Hola primos,

I happened to find this website while doing research. it's map website where it shows all the pueblos & ranchos of Mexico. The closer you come in the more ranchos pop up. This is exciting for me. I now see how far the various pueblos & ranchos are from my ancestor's original town.
I think this is a great tool. I hope you feel the same way.

"Placed in Home of" "Pusto en casa de"

Hello, one of my ancestors, Vicente Richarte, is listed in his 14 Feb 1745 Aguascalientes marriage record to Ma. Josefa Ximenes as being of "padres no conocidos," but placed/puesto in the home of Melchor Richarte.

See:

https://www.familysearch.org/das/v2/3:1:S3HT-DTDQ-F6K/dist.jpg?ctx=CrxC…

Does this mean that there was likely no biological connection between the child and parent? Is the child in such cases usually an orphan or foundling? Or was this some way of bringing a "natural" biological son into a household?

--
Tengo antepasado, Vicente Richarte, de Aguascalientes quien fue de padres "no conocidos," pero quien fue puesto en la casa de Melchor Richarte. Indica esto que Vicente and Melchor no tenian ninguna relacion biologica?

Ancestry changes DNA ethnicity estimates

Ancestry recently changed the number of reference samples for ethnicity estimates from 3,000 to 16,0000, and as a result their estimates of a person’s ethnicity have become more refined.

In the case of my wife (who’s recent ancestors are all Mexican) and my (my recent ancestors are either from the British isles, or Austro-Hungarian Empire and Northern Germany) estimates, the changes make sense.

When you look at your results on Ancestry you can compare the two estimates, and you are given the option of accepting the revised results, if you wish.

Felipa Ramona Guadalaxara and Jose Montano Bernal from Aguascalientes

Greetings everyone: I am a new member of this group. My mother’s family is from Aguascalientes. I am trying to identify the parents of my fifth great-grandparents: Felipa Ramona Guadalaxara and Jose Montano Bernal from Aguascalientes. Felipa was likely born around 1760. I cannot find the couple’s marriage record. Their first child was Maria Regina Bernal, b. 1775. It looks like they lived at the Rancho of San Antonio de Buena Vista after Felipa married Jose Montano as their second child (Jose Ignes Guadalupe Montano Bernal b. 1778) was baptized there, and they were still residing there when Ma. Regina married in 1775. Any information or leads on finding their parents would be much appreciated.
