Hi Everyone,

I've been a member of Nuestros Ranchos for some months now & enjoy reading all the tips & tricks & new ideas I see here.  (Due to school responsibilities, I have no had much time for research.) But none of them have enabled me to find out more about my paternal gg grandparents, D. Simon & Da. Micaela Torres (de) Quinteros.  So now I'm asking for your help.  Simon was born in Mexico in 1852.  His father may be Mario/Mariano Quinteros-not sure on the mother who may or may not be a Rosales.  Simon married Micaela Torres who was born in Mexico in 1849.  She was the daughter of Rafael Torres-again not sure about the mother.  They were married in the chapel of Hacienda del Fuerte by a priest of  the parish in Sta. Elena  in Rio Grande, Zacatecas, Mexico on 24 June 1874.  They had atleast two sons, Simon who I know nothing about, & Rafael who was born in Rio Grande in 1878 & later became my g grandfather.  Rafael Quinteros md Domitila Mendez who I
was told was born in Fresnillo in 1882-3 & was the daughter of Andres Mendez & Dionisia Arellano who I now believe may actually be an Alvarado & from Jerez instead.  Rafael & Domitila moved their family to TX in 1922 & their youngest son was my grandfather.  Unfortunately, our family is not close, many of the old are dying off & during the course of researching my father's line, I have found lots of misinformation that is supposed to be family "gospel". 

I need help locating/tracing further back Simon, Domitila's & Micaela's families.  My father said he believed the Quinteros family (who may or may not have an s on the end of the surname the further back you go) may have had some connections in Saltillo, NL.  The only reference I am able to find of Simon & Micaela is their marriage record (source ref M604910 LDS Films from Salt Lake FHL) which was nearly impossible for me to decipher with any accuracy. (water damage?, terrible handwriting)  I had been told our family on the paternal side was of  Aztec/Spanish origins but until I found the marriage record, I was unaware that we were also landowners.  The parish they married in is still in existence & I understand the hacienda del fuerte is also still around, albeit in ruins.  I've tried contacting the priests in that area with no response from them-maybe because of the recent papal ban on release of records due to actions of the LDS church in
baptizing deceased members of the catholic faith. 

Maybe some of you who have access to this record may have better luck finding something I overlooked.  I am somewhat bilingual but not to any great extent other than enough conversational spanish to get by with & I do not have much experience in researching Mexican ancestry.  It's one thing trying to decipher poor handwriting in English, but poorly written Spanish when you're not much of a native Spanish speaker is another.  I could make out the words viuda (is this referring to a previous marriage of the bride?) & the word for god parents & parents but could not decipher the names.  Can anyone out there help me?

Hello all, I am currently awaiting some film from the Family History Center regarding the marriage of a Joseph Manuel Dias to a Maria Anna Peres in Tepatitlan De Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico. I have been able to determine that they were both married on June 25, 1752 (Batch #M603726, Source Call #0218517) I'm hoping the actual film will show who the parents are. While I'm waiting for the film, I thought I would just throw this event out there to see if anyone just happens to have any information on the parents of Joseph Manuel Dias and/or Maria Anna Peres. I'm assuming their DOB's will be sometime around 1730. Any help would be appreciated.

The Spaniards drive me crazy! Our ancestors used like
10 names to refer to them selves and it is the same
person! Who knew Antonia Martín, Antonia del Campo,
Antonia López and Antonia de la Cruz could be the same
person! My family kinds still does that but not too
much in the US just in México, My grandfather used
Antonio López when marriage, Antonio del Camino when
baptised, Antonio López de Elisalde in the US he being
married to my gm they share the same pedigree since
their cousins 2nd. A funny story, When my mom was born
they asked is she your child? And he said of course,
him being López de Elisalde and my mom recieving
García del Camino??? I was laughing at this story! The
doctors were curious! I find it curious my mother
refers to herself as Mexicana while her parents "son
Español". My identity is lost! I suppose? I usually
say "yo soy Español" Do you have any similar
experiances? Thought this was fun to share! The
Spanish have funny nameing systems!

Is this what you saw in Somos Primos? I believe they once had a link to the holdings of the Los Angeles Regional Family History Center, which include films for Moyahua de Estrada, but only dating from 1814 to 1877. The University of Texas has historical documents in some collections dating from 1692 to 1814, but I didn't see anything about Moyahua. You could ask them or search the Archivos de la Nacion.

Please see link above. Again my husband's roots intermesh with my roots. I have a question that is probably better asked on this website as the author Dr. Gabriel Sanchez deals with Spanish history. Does anyone know about him? I am interested in his work on Felix O'Neill as Felix O'Neill is my maternal great great grandfather's name. On the link above is Dieciocho 23 2000 117-113. Does this refer to a book? If you read down he has many other works relating to Spain and New Spain, so thought I would share. Does anyone know how to purchase his works or any libraries that have his works besides the one in Belfast?

I got a few questions that stemmed for searching the line of Maria de la Luz Tiscareno (sorry, haven't figured out how to write the tilde~), born about 1750, daughter of Vicente Tiscareno and Maria de Torres, as they appear in her marriage to Guadalupe Gonzalez,El Sagrario, Aguascalientes 27 May 1767. They had several children, one of them Cesario (or Sesario) Gonzalez married twice. In his first marriage to Maria de los Santos Ramires, Cesario he is identified as 'Espanol'. However, his parents, Maria de la Luz and Guadalupe, are respectively identified as 'Coyota' and 'Mestizo' in their marriage record. Has anyone faced a similar issue on the 'racial' discrepancy between parents and children? I would have expected for Cesario to be Mestizo, unless he appeared 'Espanol' to the eyes of the priest. Is this common?
The second question, does anyone has info on Vicente de Tiscareno (born about 1725) or Maria de Torres?

Tuvierion varios hijos, uno de ellos Cesario (Sesario) Gonzalez que se caso dos veces. Hello all, just started looking a little further into my grandmother's (father's side) Luna line and have already run into a little snag. I thought I would throw it out there in case anyone recognizes something.

My grandmother was named Juana Magallanez Luna (1/6/1904 – March 1983) with the follwing info:

According to original Civil documents she was from Moyahua De Estrada, Zacatecas, was born on January 6, 1904. Per the same original civil documents, her mother was Albina Magallanez and was 35
years of age around her birth which means she was born around 1865. Juana's father was C. Florencio Luna (age 36 around 1864). Same records also show Florencio Luna’s parents to be Domingo Luna & Julia Avila. Records show parents of Albina Magallanez to be Guillermo Magallanez & Maria Trinidad Benavides. Now when I search throught the LDS system, under vital records (Batch #M643958, Film #1162574), I come up with a Florentino Luna (born 1861) who was married to a Alvina Magallanes
on April 27, 1881 in Moyahua, Zacatecas, Mexico. The records states that Alvina Magallanes was 15 years old when married which would put her DOB at around 1864, around the same time as the original civil document I cited. The LDS records state that Florentino Luna’s parent were Domingo Luna & Juana Garcia. On the original civil document cited above, Florencio’s parents were listed as Domingo Luna & Julia Avila, not Juana Garcia. Also, the parents of Alvina Magallanes are listed as Sesario Magallanes and Trinidad Benavides. ON the original Civil document, the father is listed as Guillermo Magallanez not Sesario Magallanes, yet the mother is listed the same as Trinidad Benavides. I think it would be too much of a coincidence if this was a different Florencio Luna and Alvina Magallanes. However, Alvina's father does not match up and Florencio's mother does not match up. Could not find anything else. I have records at the Family History Center on order, but I thought I would throw it out there and give it a shot.

Yes, I have found such varying descriptions of race in baptisms in my research. One family had several children, and I was amazed that each child was listed with a race different from his parents. In this family I found "espanol", "yndio", "mestizo", and "mulato". A rainbow family.

I guess the priests did look at the complexion of the child, although I thought all newborns looked the same (reddish) and didn't take on color until they were older.

My ancestors have been traced to this area of Jalisco. So far I have Miguel Mora born in La Barca in 1882-1963. His father was Jose Miguel Mora born in 1855 in Jamay, Jalisco. His father was Jose Maria Mora born about 1831 in Ocotlan. My line descends back to Antonio Mora born 7-30-1806 in Ocotlan. Finally I have reached a roadblock with the Rafael Mora and Gertrudis Vaca marriage about 1800. Is their anybody that is related to this Mora family or that might have some possible information. I know that this family was in Jalisco for many years.

My Aguinaga family crossed at El Paso, Texas on 12 July 1918. My
grandmother Ysabel Rodriquez, my uncle Juan Aguinaga , age five, and
Great-grandfather, Juan Guerra Aguinaga, his wife Maria Cruz Ortiz Bonilla
also accompanied them. My grandfather Leonardo Aguinaga had been crossing
the border and working ( since 1910) met them there. At this time he
worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad between Deming, Nm, Duncan and
Clifton Az maintaining the rails. After 3 years of working on the rails
they settled in Calexico, California (1920). Leonardo an Ysabel later had
six other children, one being my own father Salvador Aguinaga. My father and
mother had 9 Kids. I am the oldest. My research of my family has taken me
to Jalisco. Most church records come from Senor San Jose Church records.
Today in Matanzas, Jalisco and several towns in Lagos de Moreno I believe
have lots of Aguinagas. In my research of Matanzas I have found really two
types of Aguinagas. Several years ago I started DNA testing some family
members and found out that there are two different DNAs, one is Native
Indian (which I am) and the other which is European. My best guess is that
my Indian ancestor assumed the name of Aguinaga when and if they worked on
the ranch or farm of the Aguinaga. My research will continue on the Aguinaga
Families and their branches and any Indian history in the area. I plan to
visit Matanzas, Jalisco and the area in November 2009. Tom Solorio

I found in the LDS files a Juana Maria Alvares Tostado born 1721 Jalostotitlan, parents: Lucas Alvarez Tostado and Apolonia Fernandez Cordero. But I am not certain if it is the Juana I am looking for.

According to oral family history, Maria Gonzalez’ first marriage was to a Dr Juan Brena who was a multimillionaire. He had a plantation behind the Capitol of Mexico where he raised gum trees. These lands were confiscated during the Mexican Revolution. Dr. Brena died in Mexico about 1918. He left his son, Marcelo Gonzalez, from his second marriage to Maria, a substantial inheritance including 52 vecindades in Zacatecas.

Marcelo Gonzalez at one time lived at Callejon del Indio Triste No. 59 and at one time worked at radio station XE2DJ, a picture which I have not figured out how to post.
Again according to oral history, Maria lived a life of luxury while married to Dr. Brena. She lived in a 3 story mansion in Mexico City which was located behind the Cathedral on Calle del Reloj and was in front of the Treatro Alarcon.

The following paragraph is found in “Barrios de Zacatecas” author Fidencio Berumen: “Esta casa del magnanimo espanol, es la que antano occupara la Jefatura de la Zona Militar, en la calle que leva el nombre de Juan de Tolosa, casa que fuera propiedad ultimamente de la testamentaria del Dr Brena, y en la actualidad de la familia Kuri Brena”

Is there a connection between these two mansions? I am not even sure that Dr Brena was of the Kuri Brena family. With these facts, can anyone fill in blanks and offer any corrections to my information. Oral history came from Maria’s nephew and I have not found any documents to verify this info.

My great-grandfather's grandfather Jose Lorenso Santoyo (born abt. 1775) was son of Joseph (Manuel?) Santoyo and Maria Josefa Diaz (de Leon?). I have not been able to find Jose Lorenso's birth certificate, but in his marriage (11 may 1808, San Jose de Ojuelos, Jal) to Maria Josefa Masias the parents of both are listed. In a search of Jose Lorenso's siblings I found the following individuals whom I believe, by the names of the parents, the timeline (1770-1802) and the places (all localities linked to Cienega de Mata & Ojuelos), to be siblings.
1. Juan Joseph Santoyo Dias. baptized 17 May 1772, Senor San Jose, Ojuelos. Son of Joseph Santoyo and Maria Josefa Dias. Batch C602501 film 0639958. 2. Jose Alberto Santoyo Dias. baptized 22 Jun 1785, Cienega de Mata, Ojuelos. Son of Jose Manuel Santoyo&Maria Josefa Dias. batch number C607042 film 640153.
In addition there are seven marriages all in microfilm M602326 0641016. 3. Maria Paulina Santollo, Born in Letras. Daughter of Josse Manuel Santollo & Maria Josefa Dias. M. Ramon Martines Soto Mallor, 28 Nov 1787, Cienega de Mata, Ojuelos M602326 0641016.

I would expect that the records 1&2 (christening) would be the most useful. Hopefully the names of the grandparents are listed helping confirm all these individuals as the same family. The name Jose (Joseph or Josse) Manuel in combination with Santoyo (Santollo) with Maria Josefa Dias (or Diaz) or Dias de Leon, indicates that there is a good chance that is the case. Does anyone has any of these films on loan, particularly the christenings to solve this question? It would be a great help.

No, what I saw was film numbers for the church in Moyahua dating from 1814 to the 1600's.  If we could get a hold of those films we would be able to extend our lines.   I believe that is why we are not able to find records on Silverio Reynoso.  He and many other family members would be on those films.

Marquez - Gomez Lines

My Maternal GG-Grandfather was named Francisco Marquez. He was married to Aleja Gomez, who died before December 1899. They had at least four children:

* Petronilo Marquez, b. May 31, 1859, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico; d. February 09, 1943, Los Angeles, California.
* Juana Marquez, b. July 05, 1868, Los Cuervos, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico; m. Jose Ines Rivera, November 29, 1899, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico; b. Abt. 1874.
* Maria Rufina Marquez, b. July 25, 1869, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico.
* Tomas Marquez, b. March 12, 1871, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico.

According to family tradition, my G-Grandfather, Petronilo Marquez, was a wealthy landowner and distiller in Jerez who was forced from his land during the Mexican Revolution. He married Higinia Valdes (see below), and they had the following children:

* Aurelia Marquez, b. April 14, 1899; d. October 14, 1977; m. Jesus Beruman; b. February 05, 1889; d. May 31, 1960.
* Alfonso Marquez, b. February 23, 1901, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico; d. June 12, 1968, Los Angeles, California.
* Fernando “Joe” Marquez, b. May 30, 1904, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico; d. February 12, 1999, La Habra, California.
* Luis Marquez, b. August 25, 1910, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico; d. May 09, 1978, Industry, California; m. (1) Gloria ?; m. (2) Doris A. Rivera.
* Dolores “Lola” Marquez, b. March 29, 1912; d. August 05, 2003, La Mirada, California.

Petronilo and his family emigrated to the Los Angeles area in 1916.

Valdes - De La Torre Lines

My G-Grandmother Higinia Valdes (b. January 11, 1879, Mexico; d. August 16, 1963, Los Angeles, California) was the daughter of Jose Maria Valdes and his wife Tomasa De La Torre, my GG-Grandparents. Jose Maria and Tomasa had at least one other child, Amalia, b. July 29, 1886, Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico. Family tradition holds that the 1950s-era Mexican film actress Martha Valdes is related to our Valdes line.

I have more information regarding the descendants of Petronilo Marquez and Higinia Valdes, but I have a lot of work to do with respect to my GG-Grandparents’ generation and their ancestors. I would to hear about potential connections to my GG-Grandparents.

Francisca *Carillo Carillo* b. abt 1884 *Colotlan.*

Does this relate to other *de la O* families I've seen mentioned on this
site ? I haven't found any info in the files.

The most distant relative found is Bernardino *de la O* b. abt 1804 ,
*Tlatenango,

I'm assuming that the Boquilla mentioned is La Boquilla Zaragoza, a few
miles to the north east of Colotlan. There is a reference in an article
about nearby town *Totatiche* of a hacienda owned by a* **de la O* family.

I just checked FamilySearch.org and it is not updated. It has a new look, but I am not finding in the IGI what I am finding in the Pilot Site (see link below).

This pilot site is so great. I am finding ancestors I have been looking for for years that were never indexed in the IGI. I also am finding many ancestors who came from Mexico and settled in the Lower El Paso Valley and Mesilla Valley 100 years ago (in the Texas Death records). Every day that I check this site, I find they have uploaded more and more baptism records and census info.

Another site that is great for those of us whose ancestors settled in the southwest in the late 1800s and early 20th century is GenealogyBank.com. They have historical newspapers from the Southwest, and I found an article about the assassination of my great-grandfather in 1900. I had only heard the story from my mother and her siblings, but they didn't know the details. He was a wealthy rancher in the Mesilla Valley, and the story appeared in papers as far as the Kansas City Star.

My housework and yardwork have gone to pot, I spend so much time browsing the Pilot Site. I also signed up as a volunteer and downloaded the program to do indexing for them, but I can't figure out how to contact them to give me a project to work on.

It is different now, in a matter of years it will contain all genealogical microfilm records

Hola Claudia ,how are you ? Well I hope . I descend from the Reynoso line of Jalisco. There were 2 brothers Francisco and Diego Reynoso whose parents were Francisco Reynoso (born In Peru ) and Mariana Padilla Davilla (Culiacan and related to all Padillas in the Area) . The 2 brothers married 2 sisters Josefa and Margarita Renteria. Francisco married Josefa (1659)in Guadalajara and Diego married Margarita in(1680) Juchipila ,Zacatecas. So in a nut shell Francisco stayed in Jalisco and Diego in Zacatecas.What are your thoughts ?
