Capt. Andres Figueroa

Hi,
I'm hoping someone has come across Capt. Andres Figueroa, from around 1590-1650. He is the brother of Joseph Figuera de Venegas, the priest of Jalpa, Zac from 1610-1655. It is possible that Capt Andres Figueroa also went by the name "Andres Figueroa Saavedra"

One of the Tieras & Aguas records I came across states that Andres left a will after he died sometime before 1655. Where would such wills be found in Guadalajara's archives?

I also found an Andres Venegas who was alcalde mayor of Mestiticacan (http://books.openedition.org/cemca/1599?lang=en) in 1616. I wonder if in this source, the capitan was using Venegas just as his brother used it as a second last name?

Thanks in advance,
Arturo

Libros De La Nueva Espana

I had the idea that there were a number of books during the colonial days of Mexico.

So I did a search in the Pars website archive for "libros"

http://www.archivesportaleurope.net/web/guest

Then on the left hand side filter by "archivos de indias" and then again "contains digital objects"

So I can only get list of archives of the americas with documents pertaining to books.

Because some of those books may have illustrations such as places to see what they looked like back then.

Where were Esclavos Sold in Nueva Galicia and are there any archives?

I am curious if anyone knows where esclavos were sold in the Nueva Galicia area such as Zacatecas, Jalisco, Aguasclientes.

Are there any archives to view on those. I had seen the archive of Aguascalientes that has an interesting sub-archive on the "Venta de Esclavos" that is in detail with names, description, who bought them, etc.

Andrés de la Torre and Marcela de Araiza

I found three different marriage records for Andrés de la Torre and Marcela de Araiza and I am trying to make sense of them.

The first record, dated January 1721 (El Sagrario, Aguascalientes), states they are “casado y no velado” in the margin.

The second record, dated 24 January 1721 (Ojuelos), says “case y vele” in the text.

The third record, dated 6 years later on 24 February 1727 (Asientos), states “bendiciones nupciales” in the text and “casados y velados” in the margin.

I suspect they are the same couple in the first two records but I am not so sure about the third. Unfortunately for me the latter is the only one of the three that provides the names of their parents.

Is anyone else familiar with this couple or their respective families? Any assistance, information, or insight given would be greatly appreciated.

Pedro Carrillo de Avila

Hello,
Looking for the parents of Pedro Carrillo de Avila. On some of family trees published online is mentioned that Pedro Carrillo de Avila (husband of Maria Sancha de Velmar) was the son of JORGE HERNANDEZ and INES DE OJEDA. Unfortunately the trees don't have the source for this information. Any idea where to find this information?

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Does anyone have info on Pedro Huizar born in Aguascalientes 1740?

I have a Pedro Huizar on my family tree. But I am curious of a Pedro Huizar that appears on this link of Texas history that says he was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico in 1740:

https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/fhu22

The Pedro Huizar was from Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico that married in 1742 at San Andres Del Astillero of Monte Escobedo, Zacatecas, Mexico:

He would be too old to be the Pedro Huizar born in Aguascalientes in 1740. So I am curious to see if the Pedro Huizar in my family tree had a son name Pedro Huizar.

Does anyone have any information on who the parents are of Pedro Huizar born in Aguascalientes in 1740?

DIA DE LAS MADRES: Ana Maria India Ladina

On this Mother’s Day, I’d like to celebrate the life of a forgotten mother: Ana Maria India Ladina.

I discovered Ana Maria India Ladina while reading the informacion matrimonial of a distant family member. “India ladina” is her casta, and not her surname. It basically meant that she was indoctrinated in the Spanish and Christian ways. For lack of a surname, it’s how I refer to her.

On 27 Jan 1669, in San Luis Potosi, Ana Maria responded to the marriage banns of Marcos Villareal and Teresa de Sotomayor. She looked to be 70 years-old, and she claimed that there was an impediment to the marriage, because the groom had had a relationship with her daughter, Juana Antonia Mestiza, who was her illegitimate daughter with Spaniard Juan de Saldaña, who was the brother of Diego Mateos, who was father of the bride. Therefore, her daughter was 1st-cousin of the bride, creating an impediment of “2º grado de afinidad por copula ilicita.”

Marcos Villareal responded that, yes, Juan de Saldaña and Ana Maria India Ladina did have a relationship, before he married Maria de Castañeda, which produced 3 Mestiza daughters, all of whom Juan de Saldaña later adopted and raised with his legitimate children. If Juana Antonia Mestiza was his daughter, then he would have adopted and raised her, too. But she was born after their relationship ended, so she can’t be his daughter. Therefore, there is no impediment.

He then presented 3 witnesses to support his case: the first 2 said that they had had relationships with Ana Maria India Ladina, who also accused them of being the father of Juana Antonia Mestiza, demanding child support, and the 3rd confirmed the testimony of the first 2. They all described Ana Maria India Ladina as “una muger ramera y mundana”: a “street walker,” and “worldly.” The judge found no family link between her daughter and the bride, and the marriage proceeded.

While reading this, I was overcome by an immense wave of sorrow. I literally sobbed. All I could think about, was this poor Indian woman, over 70 years of age, to whom life had dealt a harsh hand: as a young maiden of the lower castas, she was used and exploited by men; her children were either taken away from her, or she gave them up, because she couldn’t provide for them. And now, she was being accused of being a “whore” in front of an ecclesiastical court. And to top it off, she was forgotten: as her children were born illegitimately, they are probably registered as “hijos de padres no conocidos.” Her name appears nowhere, except for on this IM. I felt an intense compassion for this woman, who was born over 400 years ago. She was the true embodiment of La Llorona (I could hear Chavela Vargas, singing in the background).

In my lines, I have a Margarita de Saldaña, who married Juan de Santiago on 16 Jun 1647, in Sierra de Pinos. My g9s. Though I know who his parents are, I don’t have her ancestry, and assumed she was probably an “hija de la yglesia.” When they married, Juan de Santiago was living in SLP, so I suspect that she was from there, and that’s where they met. On some records, she and her children are listed as “Mestizos,” so I know she was of mixed ancestry. I wonder: is my Margarita de Saldaña one of those 3 Mestiza daughters of Juan de Saldaña and Ana Maria India Ladina?? Hmm.

On this Mothers Day 2018, I celebrate you, DOÑA ANA MARIA INDIA LADINA, born around 1600, in San Luis Potosi. Though you couldn’t provide for your first 3 daughters, you made sure that they were well-taken care of, and you managed to raise the 4th on your own; she married, and raised a family, so your legacy lives on. As much as you suffered, as much as you struggled, you succeeded, and you brought life into this world. ¡QUE VIVA DOÑA ANA MARIA INDIA LADINA!

Manny Diez Hermosillo

PS - The padrino for the baptism of my Margarita de Saldaña’s first child? None other than Juan de Saldaña.

Where can I find Government Documents of Huejuquilla, Jalisco year 1880?

Does anyone have any ideas of archives that I can browse through pertaining to Government of Huejuquilla year 1880?

Because I believe that my Great Grandfather may have been the mayor of Huejuquilla in 1880 as I had seen his signatures in Civil Records of 1880 in familysearch.org.

There is a gap pertaining to who the mayors were in Huejuquilla. Missing names from years 1862 - 1895.

Felipe de Esqueda and Maria de Estrada

Hello Nuestros Ranchos Forum,

I'm looking for information on Felipe de Esqueda and Maria de Estrada they
would've been born around 1650 and have at least two children born in 1675
and 1677. Felipe de Esqueda is the most likely the son baptized in 1647 and
the son of Lorenzo de Esqueda and Maria Lopez but I'm wondering if someone
knows who Maria de Estrada is the daughter of?

My Great Grandfather Calixto Madera Signature 1880?

My Great Grandfather Calixto Madera was born in 1853 in Huejuquilla El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico.

But in the civil records of marriages of 1880. His signatures appears many times when couples would get married. Here clearly is his signature and a stamp next to his name of "Gobierno Politico De Huejuquilla." Which means he did have a Government function at Huejuquilla. It is possible he was the Mayor of Huejuquilla but in the list of mayors of Huejuquilla several years are missing 1862 - 1895.
