First of all, thank you for accepting me, This is certainly not my field, but I am familiar with research (biological). What I have found so far: My grand father PEDRO DE ALBA PEREZ (1887-1960), was born in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco since he was fairly educated, wrote a fair amount on several themes, and one of them was his child growing times, but no dates. So I know the names of his brothers and sisters, but no dates, am pretty sure all born in San Juan, although the family was accoustomed to moving around (but not very far). Brothers and Sisters: TIMOTEO, SALVADOR, PABLO, MARIA DE LA LUZ, CATALINA, ADELAIDA, GUADALUPE (I know she was a teacher and a school nearby has her name -need to ask if they have a biblio).Great-grand father (JOSE) LAMBERTO (DE) ALBA JIMENES (bat 1853, married 1880, d. ?) married LIBRADA PEREZ MUÑOS (b. ?, chris. 1863, d. ?) in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco.
It is clear to me that the (de) subscript was used rather loosely, and maybe only to note that it came from a "spanish" (vs. indian or criollo), I am a bit unsure about the spelling of ALBA, I have seen it with ALVA, so I am not sure if they are the same in the mind of the scribes that registred the bautisms.
I have found www.familysearch.org, very helpful, and although I have published my tree in www.geneanet.org , but the search engine is very poor (but found a tree by a UNAM resarcher that shows (JOSE) BLAS (DE) ALBA PERES (father of Lamberto) no (de) in the names).

Does anyone know where to look for ancestor's land title or testaments during the colonial period of Nueva Galicia (Jalisco, Zacatecas)?

Supposedly they had registered at the Real Audencia of Guadalajara?

I’m new here and sort of new to family research and have run into a few brick walls in my direct line. One of them is an Augustin Flores de la Torre cc Cathalina de Bargas Castaneda. They were Spanish and probably born between 1680-1690 in Milpillas and the records are coming out of Teul in Zacatecas. I descend from their daughter Francisca Flores de la Torre married to Martin del Muro. She’s either their first child or the first child I’ve found a record for, but she was baptized in Teul on 20 May 1706.

Augustin and Cathalina’s other kids are:

Two of Francisca and Martin del Muro’s sons were issued marriage dispensations.

My ancestor Cristobal’s focuses on how he and Maria Velasquez are related through the Marquez de Ulloa/Ruiz de Esparza line

His brother Augustin Prudencio’s is more relevant here and is mostly about his relation to the bride on the Castaneda line, but their grandmothers are also related on the Ulloa line.

It basically says the following:
Pedro de Castaneda . . . Joseph de Castaneda (brothers)
Francisca de Castaneda . . . Pedro de (Bargas) Castaneda (cc Maria de Ulloa)
Cathalina de (Bargas) Castaneda . . . Alexandro de Castaneda (I’ve seen him call himself Nicolas Alexandro a time or two)
Francisca Flores de la Torre . . . Francisca Xaviera Castaneda (the bride)
Augustin Prudencio del Muro (the groom)

The older Pedro, Joseph, and Francisca’s spouses aren’t given. On the baptism records of their kids, both Cathalina the grandmother and Pedro (the cousin) sometimes use de Bargas Castaneda. I know there’s a Nicolas Castaneda married to an Anna de Vargas, but they were married in the 1650s. The timeline seems a little tight for Pedro (the brother of Joseph) to be one of their children and have a great grand daughter by 1706. I know Nicolas’ father is another Pedro de Castaneda married to a Jacinta de Sotomayor, but is there another Bargas Castaneda line? Unless I’ve read the dispensation wrong.

Dos anyone with more knowledge of this family or who has this line in their tree have any information or insight? Teul doesn’t seem to have the marriage records this far back to look for parents.

As for Augustin Flores de la Torre . . . I thought he would fit into the more well known Flores de la Torre family, but I have no idea how.

It appears Cathalina passed away though and Augustin remarried to a Geronima de Guzman about 1720 in Teul

I've scanned in the images from the 1820 Census of the Parish of Jalpa, Zacatecas. I hope they'll be useful to you, especially since the records for Jalpa in the early 1800s are so scant.

As I understand it, houses or households are separated by a long line. But there are a few symbols that I can't figure out, such as those found in this image:

The names have a cross next to them--does this mean the person has been confirmed?

There's also a symbol that looks like the Greek letter PSY. Sometimes it's next to a name and other times it's given by itself at the end of the household.

There's also a number that sometimes is given at the end of the household, but I can't figure out what this refers to. Sometimes it's next to a name and other times, next to the symbol that looks like the Greek letter PSY.

Any input would be helpful.

I was looking at microfilm of Escrituras:
Escrituras 1691 - 1738

I only looked at the first few pages as immediately I was reading a lot of interesting things and how the seals/stamps that were on the escrituras. I only read the first few pages because I ended up chatting about geneology with one of the aides at the LDS center that was helping me make copies. The title of the microfilm is:

But when I first began reading the first pages I was seeing escrituras dating back to 1598!! I wrote down some notes on what one said, "Bellade San Felipe 28 de Septiembre 1598 Trespaso Valle de San Francisco, Juan Diaz Domingo Palacios. Hacienda de Domingo Gallegos 1597" as example. I liked the seal/stamp I saw on another escritura year 1707 and made two copies of it:

I am looking for the Escrituras of my GGGGGGG Grandfather Antonio Madera (1660 - 1709) from Minilla, Mezquitic, Jalisco, Mexico area. His wife Maria De La Canderlia (1655 - 1735) had left a testamento at Monte Escobedo, Zacatecas, Mexico.

As this is a transcription, I’ve attempted to stay true to what I see written. This means using the spellings and abbreviations of names used during that era - though without the superscripted text. Most of it is intuitive: “Juo” for “Juan,” “Frnco” for “Francisco,” “Ma” for “Maria,” “Cata” for “Catalina,” “Mn” for “Martin,” “Xo” for “Cristobal,” etc.

Other abbreviations used:

“come” = comadre
“compe” = compadre
“dha/dho” = dicha/dicho

Notes:

The pages, Pinos 31 & 32, have no headers, date, location, nor signature of cura nor notary. Appears to be a different notary, and likely from a later date (date on previous image was 29 Jan 1627). I say that, since many of these children were baptized at later dates, some as late as 22 Apr 1634. I’ll have to cross-reference these with other records, to get a fix on the date, but for the time being, I’m going to use the date, June 1634. The edges of the pages are torn, so some names don’t appear.

Can anyone recommend a general history book about the Jalisco area? Thanks.

I think Jose Romo de Vivar is my ancestor. The research that I and others have done suggests he was born in San Felipe in 1625, then married to Juana Solis y Calahorra in 1644 in the Presidio de Conchos, Chihuahua. Another source, the Chihuahua Fondo Colonial records, say they were married on 12 July 1650 in San Bartolome, Valle de Allende, Chihuahua. The Presidio was in the Valle de Allende. The birth and marriage records both state that Jose Romo's parents were Diego Romo de Vivar and Maria Rangel. Another record states that Jose Romo went west to Sonora. Another researcher has him in the Pimeria Alta (in Sonora) in 1695 when he was sent to pacify the Pima Indians. This could have been a son of the same name. This same researcher has Jose Romo, born 1625, with 3 sons: Geronimo, Simon and Jose Gabriel born between 1675-1678. Although it is possible for a Jose Romo born 1625 to have 3 children between 1675-1678, it seems to me that to be in active service as a captain at age 70 in 1695, is a stretch.

Jose Romo de Vivar founded the town of Bacanuche, Sonora. A Geronimo Romo de Vivar, married to Lucia (or Luisa) Martin Bernal, had a son, Jose Antonio who was born in 1707. His birthplace in unreadable in the IM, but it was in Sonora. My 6th great grandfather, Salvador Ygnacio Romo de Vivar was born in Bacanuche, as was my 5th great grandmother Maria Rita de los Dolores Romo de Vivar y Escalante whose birth date was probably 1747. My task right now is to see if Salvador Ygnacio is a brother of Jose Antonio, and both were sons of Geronimo Romo de Vivar. Or if Salvador was a brother to Geronimo, or aany other Romo de Vivar in the Bacanuche area.

Any thoughts or information on the above would be appreciated. From Salvador Ygnacio to me, Jose-Maria Merino Arvizu, I have documented and sourced.

I thought about translating into Spanish but it seems that most speak and read both languages, so I decided against it for now. Si a alguien le dificulta entender el ingles lo traducire.

Hello, I am new to this site so please excuse my ignorance in researching Mexican records. I am familiar with the record system in southern Italy but I have no clue about searching records in Jalisco. I would appreciate any help in learning how the births, deaths, and marriages were reported in Jalisco during the late 1800s. I think that there were prebably two records of each event; one civil and one church. I wonder if the records were kept in each village or were they sent to a bigger, centralized location?

Although I am the one doing the searching, I am doing it for my friend, Edward Bedoya Plazola. He was born in 1934 in Azusa, California a few months after his father died. Although he was the youngest of 14 children, the family didn't talk that much about his father becuase his mother soon remarried.

From bits of family lore and facts that I have dug up, this is what we know. Domingo Gonzales Plazola was born in 1889 in San Sebastian, Jalisco, Mexico. He was the son of unknown Plazola and Jacinta Gassia? Gonzalez born about 1860. We know that Domingo had a sister, Guadalupe who married a Vasquez, and brother Luis (b 18892). I am sure that there were more siblings. Luis settled in Corcoran, California. It's unknown if Guadalupe lived in the US but many of her children also lived near Corcoran. Jacinta Gonzalez arrived in the US about 1919. She also lived in Corcoran.

Domingo, Ed's father, was involved in the Revolution. About 1916, he felt threatened and decided to go to Arizona. He bagan using the the name, Domingo Gonzalez. He worked in the mines in Ray, Arizona. About 1920 he and his family moved to California.

I would like to find the birth, marriage, and deth records in Jalsico. Ed was told that he father was from San Sebastian near Guadalajara. I found two San Sebastians just south of the city but I can not figure out if both these villages were in existence during the 1880s and where the records might be. There are at leat two other San Sebastians in Jalisco. I have sent for some Family History films for two of the four.

If anyone can direct me to source for learning about the divisons of the Mexican states and record keeping, I would be grateful. As I said, I am new to this site and Mexican research so I am open to any help. If I am asking inappropriate questions, please forgive me.

Recently in Durham a city not too far from where I live opened a Virtual
Reality Arcade. Awhile back I went in and tried it for the first time and
thought it was cool but I'm not a gamer so most of the stuff didn't appeal
to me, but nevertheless. . .

So now some time went by and I needed to run into Durham and it happened
that the VR Arcade was having a 50% off sale (regular is 20 bucks for 30
minutes but this time it was 10 for 30 minutes and if you book two you get
70 minutes for 20 bucks). What appealed to me was that I was going to go in
and spend my time exploring the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, Lake
Victoria, etc.

So what happened. I went in and found myself spending the whole 70 minutes
cruising around Colotlan, Santa Maria de Los Angeles, Las Animas, Huejucar,
Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes then South to Tlaltenango and then just
started tripping around. What I found that was different from my previous
experience with regular Google Earth is that GE VR lets you "Fly" through
the area from as close as you can zoom in all the way up in space. So it was
just like I was taking a tour of the land my Ancestors traveled around at
various times in the past. I'd go down to ground level (blurry) but I could
look around 360 degrees and see the mountains and hills that they would see
everyday. I could then fly up to the top of the mountains and look down at
the various Ranchos I was visiting. To say the least I was quite impressed
and enjoyed my 70 minutes traveling through Jalisco, Zacatecas and
Aguascalientes

If you all have a VR Arcade anywhere close to you ask if they have GE VR
installed and consider checking the land of your Ancestors out as if you
were flying in a small airplane (not quite but pretty close).

I am trying to trace my roots on my grandfather's side of the family
to my ancestors in Spain. My grandfather's name was Jose' Soccoro Luevano. He was born about 1892 in what I believe was Villa Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico. Family stories have it that he was the seventh born child of Tiburcio Luevano and Manuela Martinez. It is also storied that, by tradition, the seventh born child was given to the church.

I have a document that Tiburcio Luevano and Manuela Martinez were married in the Catholic Church, La Santisima Trinidad in Villa Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico on May 27, 1874. The document also states that the grooms parents were Pablo Luevano and Manuela Serna. The brides parents were Timoteo Martinez and Fermina Rubalcava.

Jose' Luevano's children have passed information on that Jose' was given to a church near Aguascalientes, Mexico where he was educated by the church and received priesthood training. He left the church just before his priesthood training was complete and immigrated to the United States around the turn of the century, early 1900s.

I have reason to believe, but not verified, that my grandfather, Jose' Luevano was given to the Catholic Church, La Santisima Trinidad, Villa Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico, which was probably the Luevano family church.

I have retrieved the contact information of the church, and have tried to contact them by telephone, email, and text, but have received no response.

I would appreciate any hints on how to proceed with my search.

The marriage of Joseph Troncoso and Maria de los Dolores Lopes has a bit of information on the Alvarado, Delgado y Lopes Lisalde Lines and possible parents to some PNC children. I tried to follow the tree but somewhere the name Prieto appeared making the story more complex. Perhaps someone has already come across this information and can help unravel more of this story and people. In particular who are the parents of Regina de Alvarado (1629) married to Nicolas Lopes de Lisaldi?

Gerardo and Josepha were married 24 Nov 1728 in Nochistlan, but there parents are not listed, and there is no informacion matrimonial for that year online. Hi! I am a new member and I am researching my husband's family tree. Here is my link to what I have uploaded so far.

I am currently working on Francisco Perez(s) and Petra (Petronila) Hernandez (born about 1800). Francisco was born about 1795 and married Petra about 1820. Their first son, Clemente, was born in 1821. Followed by Ysidro, Maria Gregoria, Pedro, Jose Marcelino, Antonio, Sabino, Dario, Epigmenio, and Vicente Nepomeceno. The children were baptized in San Matias, Pinos, Zacatecas. Some of them ended up in Teocaltiche, Jalisco and others went to Santa Rita, Zacatecas.

I am needing help on tracking down more information on Francisco Perez's parents, who are Diego Peres and Maria. I am also stopped at Petra's parents, Francisco Hernandez and Juana. Has anyone came across these names before?

My husband is from Dario Perez's line. Dario married Maria Teodosia (Teodoria) Castaneda. Delgado and Lopez are the family names that the other siblings married into. I have more information on them if needed.

I joined a couple of weeks ago.
My research is primarily in Jalisco but I'm also looking at the
Nayarit/Jalisco border. I have been able to trace my paternal line to 1650.
However, I have about a 50 to 75 year gap that teeters between Jalisco and
Nayarit. I look forward to sharing information and learning more about my
heritage.

I believe that my direct ancestor Antonio Madera (1660? - 1709) may have originated from "Puesto Maria De La Torre" which today is a rancho on the main road leading away from Monte Escobedo, Zacatecas, Mexico to Colotlan, Jalisco, Mexico.

Because I had found his grandson Blas Madera's brother "Francisco Madera" who was there. And also a "Luis Madera" who passed away at year 80 at Colotlan in 1731 who was from Puesto De Maria De La Torre. He may be a brother of Antonio Madera.

Antonio Madera appears in the records at Minillas, Mesquitic, Jalisco married to Maria Candelaria Angon (1655 - 1735). He also had bought two blocks of land at Tlatenango, Jalisco, Mexico in 1698. His grandson Blas Madera had migrated to Huejuquilla El Alto.

Does anyone have any information on Puesto de Maria De La Torre near Monte Escobedo, Zacatecas? It may be under jurisidiccion of Colotlan. And may help me find out if my direct ancestor Antonio Madera was originally from there and who his ancestors were.

My name is Delia Guzman. My maternal grandmother[Isabel Reyes Flores (Beltran)] passed way this past March and since then I have began to seriously research my family ancestry. Her father, Jesus Nunez Flores was born in 6 August 1894 in Mezquital del Oro, Zacatecas, Mexico and her mother, Ventura Romero Reyes was born 14 July 1899 in Pilotos, Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Having just returned to school full-time, funds for memberships to websites is little to nothing, so I am looking for the most information I can from free resources.

Hello! ¡Hola! I am doing research to help a friend find his ancestors from
Mexico. To start he knows his great-grandfather, Miguel Ramirez, was
assassinated in Ayutla, Queretaro De Arteaga, Mexico, in the 1940's and was
the Chief of Arms at that time in Ayutla. Also he knows he served in a war
in Mexico prior to living in Ayutla, so we hoped there could be information
in Jalisco, Zacatecas, and/or Aguascalientes regarding his service in the
war. We would appreciate any advise or assistance in obtaining information
about Miguel Ramirez.

Hello. I am searching the Cornejo line from Jalisco. More specifically, from the areas of San Juan de Los Lagos, Encarnacion de Diaz but it has now led me to Teocaltiche. Unfortunately, I am stuck on Blas Ramirez Cornejo (late 1600's, early 1700s). Does anyone have any leads as to who his parents were?
