Has anyone here taken any classes from Family Tree University? If so, I'd really be interested to hear what you think of them.

I just signed up for my first course there "Deep DNA Analysis Techniques" on 1/24/17. It looks pretty interesting and the cost wasn't outrageous. (It's inexpensive enough for me to give them a try, at any rate.) En mis búsquedas encontré que desciendo de Nicolás de Murguía y de María Infante de Villegas, quienes fueron padres en Santa María de Los Lagos de:

1688 María
1689 Joseph
1692 Cecilia
1697 Antonio

La ascendencia de María Infante (N. 1663) ya ha sido estudiada, pero en el caso de Nicolás de Murguía no he encontrado a sus padres. Varias genealogías le atribuyen el año de 1628 como año de nacimiento sin citar ninguna fuente.

Por mi parte encontré que varias familias relacionadas tanto con los Díaz Infante como con los Villaseñor, entre ellos los Murguía y los Velasco estuvieron en Tamazula de Gordiano en el S.XVII . Encontré en Familysearch a un Nicolás de Munguía, hijo de Hernando de Munguía e Isabel de Velasco bautizado en Tamazula el día 7 de junio de 1655 Batch C603751.

Así mismo se abutizaron en Tamazula en 1678 Rosalía y Catalina y en 1688 Antonia, hijas de Rodrigo de Velasco y María de Munguía.

¿Serán éstos Munguía ascendientes de Nicolás de Murguía? ¿Existió un cambio en la ortografía?

Por otra parte en éste mismo foro se ha mencionado a una familia Murguía de Zacatecas, relacionados con la familia de los Reyes.

Creo haber encontrado algunos datos de interés de esta familia establecida en los Altos de Jalisco. En la obra del Licenciado Mariano González Leal no encuentro estos datos y creo que son de importancia para los que descienden de dicha familia.

Quisiera pedirles su ayuda con mi investigación de la familia Villaseñor, que vivieron entre los estados de Jalisco, Michoacán y Guanajuato.

Joseph Manuel de Villaseñor y Gil de Hoyos se casó con Francisca de la Parra alrededor de 1792 en Pénjamo. Sé que estaba emparentado con los Villaseñor de Don Miguel Hidalgo pero no he encontrado el enlace.

También tengo a Francisco de Villaseñor, casado con Francisca de Gálvez en Michoacán y que estaba emparentado con el anterior. Ambos usaban el apellido Marín de Villaseñor.

Many people have posted that they have tested their DNA for research into their genealogy. From what I’ve read on this forum many of them have not researched which DNA company to use. They automatically go to AncestryDNA because it is affiliated with Ancestry.com.

I would like to suggest that before you spend a considerable amount of money on DNA research, you check out the three main genealogy DNA companies. The largest database belongs to FamilyTreeDNA. They have been offering their service the longest with high integrity and service. The second testing company is 23andMe which offers health information along with genealogy research. The last one is AncestryDNA which piggybacks on Ancestry.com. Ancestry.com is a huge database which collects free genealogy information and sells it to you.

Cece Moore, The Genetic Genealogist writes: "The first step is to determine your testing goals. Do you have a general curiosity about genetic genealogy or is your focus more specific? For example, please consider the following questions:

• Are you primarily interested in researching your surname?
• Are there specific brick walls that you wish to target with the use of DNA testing?
• How far back in your family tree are these brick walls?
• What is the ancestral pattern back to these brick walls, i.e.- mother’s mother’s mother or father’s mother’s mother’s father?
• Are you ready for a long-term project or do you desire quick answers?
• Are there adoptions in your family tree that you would like to explore?

Algo que también te puede ayudar mucho es buscando a los Cronistas
Municipales. Yo empecé a trabajar hace poco (un año) y lo primero que se
topa es la limitante de no saber geografía de la época. Buscar a los
Cronistas me ayudo mucho porque me dió a entender muchos datos que no
conocía. Ejemplo: Mecatabasco: el cronista afiliado de Tabasco, Zacatecas,
me contó que los libros que existen en FamilySearch son los únicos que hay
en la región. Después de que los microfilmaron, el Padre encargado de la
Parroquia en los años 1940s , regalo, quemo, tiro el archivo. Así sé, que
no voy a encontrar más de lo que está ahí. Además cuando me topo con un
rancho que no sé dónde queda le pregunto y me cuenta la historia. Todo esto
ayuda cuando no conoces la región. Además es una fuente muy directa de
historia y geografía. Como todos nosotros que nos dedicamos a esto, es muy
gratificante que alguien te pregunte por tu trabajo. ¿Cómo los contactas?
Por facebook, hablando a la Presidencia Municipal, etc. Otra cuestión con la
que me topo es que cuando uno es nuevo en familysearch, no conoces la
herramienta. A mí me pasó, no entendía como funcionaba y no podía sacarle
provecho. Pregunta a en una Iglesia de Jesucristo… así llegue yo. Me
presente y dije ¿alguien me puede ayudar? Me enseñaron trucos, como
indexar, donde buscar y cómo, corregir mis datos. Avance en un mes lo que no
hice en seis. Tome unos cursos de Genealogía y Paleografía en Monterrey
gracias a la Sociedad Genealógica y de Historia Familiar de México (así
aparecen en Facebook). Puedo decirte que son los expertos en la región de
Nuevo León, Coahuila, Texas, etc. Ellos también han hecho presentaciones y
las tienen en línea como una breve introducción de cómo empezar, dónde
buscar y cursos sobre paleografía. Revisen el youtube. Yo me encontré
excelentes videos sobre paleografía que me han ayudado mucho. NUESTROS

herramientas. Me pasaba que siempre algún familiar me hablaba y me
preguntaba: ¿Qué más has encontrado? ¿Ya encontraste a …? ¿Siembre
dónde nació? Es la motivación más grande. Por último si decides llevar
tu árbol en familysearch, eh aquí dos tips importantes: 1. Marca como
favoritos a tus ancestros. Al ser un árbol colectivo, todos podemos meter
mano y hacer modificaciones. Tristemente, en la mayoría de los casos siempre
te vas a topar con o que te borraron del árbol o lo que se adjunto no fue
correcto. Tenerlos marcados te envía una alerta de los modificaciones que se
realizan y quien la realiza; así no se pierde la información. 2. Adjunta
las imágenes. Esto te ayudar a nunca perder la información y atar muchos
cabos sueltos. Mucha información no esta indexada, si lo adjuntas tendrás
todo a la mano.

Does anyone have any good resources for research in the areas of Ocotlan/Tototlan/Jamay/La Barca Jalisco? Any good book recommendations, online resources, or research tips/ideas?

I am using FamilySearch, of course, as well as Ancestry.com. I have to admit that I'm not the most well-informed, expert user at FamilySearch, however. It seems to me that the Ocotlan records, for example, are not completely indexed but I'm not 100% sure because I have gotten some hints (shaky leaves) on Ancestry for records there. It's been frustrating, to say the least. Does anyone know the actual situation? Are the records fully indexed? If not, any idea when they will be? I'm considering slogging through the digitized records page by page to find my ancestors.

These are surnames I'm researching in the areas in case anyone else here is also researching any of these families in the areas mentioned. (By the way, this list has grown over the last twelve months --I've been able to learn a lot more about my family since I joined here a year ago):

My name is Josie Plascencia and I'm a new member to Nuestrosranchos. I have been researching for about a year the following surnames: in Jalisco... Plascencia, Rubalcava, Nunez, Ponce, Gutierrez, Ulloa, Ledesma... in Nochistlan, Sandoval, Corona, Melendres, among many more.

Currently I am researching the Rubalcava and Placencia's from Cuquio (1700's). Does anybody have information on Maria Castaneda married to Pedro de Placencia. Their son Jose Francisco Placencia (bap: 2-7-1763) married Josefa de Robalcava on 1-22-1783 daughter of Francisco de Robalcava and Maria Francisca Sanchez. Is it possible that Maria Castaneda and Pedro de Placencia married in Aguascalientes?

I am sharing some observations and opinions, feel free to comment or not.
•The searching is painstakingly tedious.
Q: Do I hear a no scheisse?
•The church records are as frustrating as they are informative. There are notations by the visiting Bishops to the parish of Nuestra Senora de Los Dolores, where they state their disappointment with the sloppy record keeping by the parish priests. The priests failure to follow the standards for record keeping included failure to register events within a set number of days, so I have found incorrect surnames and genders. They also abbreviated entries omitting maiden names and names of paternal and maternal grandparents, essentially ending any further progress along that family line.
Q: Has anybody else encountered the same problem? Did you overcome it?
•Although the church indexed entries by first name in alphabetical order, starting with the first name, the entry number rarely, if ever, corresponds to the photo image number created by FamilySearch.
Q: Does anybody read the indexes to find a relative?
•Photocopied books are listed by groups of years, but it’s all trial and error trying to find a relative that isn’t already in the Fam.Search system.
Q: Anybody have a simple systematic way to find a relative? (Duh!)
•There are multiple copies of the same data, copies either due to the poor state of the originals or bad penmanship, ?Quien sabe?. It is frustrating to search the same data twice.
Q: No question, just whining.
•The older archaic entries are heavily abbreviated and often lack the year, which you will need to locate in the beginning of the year or month.
Q: Is there a list or a tutorial to help read and translate these archaic entries?
•I’ve noticed there was a lot of emphasis on class, individuals were listed as: Espanoles, Indios, or Mestizos. I know there are about 12 different class names, like Lobo. Some women were listed as Donella, but not all.
Q: Does this mean virgin or is it a class distinction?

El evento segun entiendo se lleva acabo en La Hacienda de La Punta, Durango. En el segundo parafo de la foja se menciona que Antonio Sanches era "español natural del Valle de Santa Barbara" ¿alguien sabe a qué área geográfica pertenece este lugar ahora?

I haven't posted here for a long time, but seems like a good time to check in again. I usually devote the last three months of the year to researching my mother's ancestry which goes back to Jalisco. I joined Nuestros Ranchos last year around this time for that very reason.

Since last year, I've made some small progress in my research, so I've updated a couple of my files. One area where I've made some small, tiny, baby steps is in trying to break down the biggest brick wall in my research. This would be the mystery that is (was) my maternal grandfather who abandoned his family in the early to mid 1940s. I have recorded all I have been able to learn about him, and while I don't expect anyone will either recognize him or necessarily be connected to me, I do welcome all suggestions for how to proceed in my research on him. Also, I've been able to obtain a DNA sample from my mother's brother, hoping the Y-dna test (37 markers) would generate some leads on my mysterious grandfather, but so far nothing very helpful has come from it. (Haplogroup R-M269)

And lastly, while my Spanish has improved a lot over the last year yet I still struggle with reading and understanding many old church and civil records. So, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to take a look at this birth record and give me a translation? It is the one on top of right page, number 185:

Hola amigos, parientes y paisanos, hay alguien que tenga por ancestro a Manuel González de Hermosillo quién caso en Aguascalientes el 7 de Febrero de 1912 con Dña catarina Romo de Vivar y Villalobos, hija de Nicolas Romo de Vivar y Tizcareño y Maria de Villalobos de la Cruz, necesito los nombres de los padres de él Contrayente, por favor algún documento, dónde apraecan los nombres paternos., saludos y mil gracias, queda la moneda en el aire.

According to DNA study a person who is descendent directlly to Maria Cid Caldera and Miguel Caldera matched with my DNA the Sanchez-Castellanos.

I can not connect the Caldera with Sanchez-Castellanos but DNA said the true.

I am truly amazed and extremely glad for those members that have had numerous responses and help answering their pleas for help.

I have not been as lucky finding a primo o prima with a shared ancestor, although Linda and Manny were very supportive.
Alas, I cross my fingers, as I request if any NR member has family in Teocaltiche that might be willing to help locate family living there now. I tried looking up a Mexican version of White Pages and got zilch.

I wish everyone Joyous Holidays, and don't forget to honor those unique traditons we inherited from our ancestors. This is the year I'm making tamales. Hay Dios Mio!!
