El comentario de nuestro primo Jorge Luis Ramírez Gómez acerca de Juan Díaz
de León es importante, pues se tratra de un personaje prominente en
Aguascalientes, pues fué Alcalde Mayor y existe una amplia documentación
relativa a su función administratriva al servicio de la Corona española
entre 1650 y 1660. Los Díaz de León son una familia de pureza genealógica
extraordinaria, no son originarios de Aguascalientes pues son, más bien, del
Real de Pinos y más específicamente de una estancia muy antigua denominada
"La Montesa", perteneciente al Mayorazgo de los Rincón Gallardo, de quienes
miembros de la familia fueron sus empleados por muchas generaciones, hasta
1850, aproximadamente. Montesa fue fundada sonbre la "Ruta de la Plata", es
decir, el primer camino de carretas que articuló a la capital de la Nueva
España con los territorios y reales de minas del Norte del continente. Su
trazo se interrumpe en Nuevo México. Los descendientes de los Díaz de León
contamos con un importantísimo documento manuscrito e inédito denominado
"Historia de Montesa" que es un relato histórico-genealógico de la familia y
abarca los años 1650-1890. Fue escrito por Don Guadalupe Díaz de Léon, tío
de mi abuela Avelina González Díaz de León en 1895. Dicho libro se ha
actualizado hasta nuestros días y contiene una de las genealogías más
completas de México. Estoy preparando una reseña que pronto haré llegar

This group is close to my heart....and so I will share with you, as you have
shared with us whatever I can...including possible interview
opportunities....I have listened to the podcasts you have shared regarding the African
presence in Mexico --- fascinating---- goes to show you that when I was first
interested in this topic during my undergraduate studies, I should have pursued
it --- instead I became a History generalist. As you know, I have traveled to
Ghana Africa under a Fullbright, and now to be part of this continuum really
brings back to the forefront a disclosure of the many parts of who we are as
a people...much like our interest in genealogy.....In the end, I think we
all are seekers of the truth....

That is a subject that interests me, as although I have never mentioned it here before, I play arpa jarocha, the folk harp from Veracruz, Mexico, and the music from that region, the son jarocho, has a heavy African influence in the rhythm, certainly, but most pointedly in the singing style. John, I have always had a love for music from Veracruz y los sones Jarochos such as el pajaro cu' and many other pieces named after colorful animals. I also love Carribean music. It must be my African descendants who are calling. I just recently found a document of someone who may be my African ancestress going back 8 generations, it says mulata libre and she was born in 1797. I still don't know for sure that she is my ancestress until I order additional documents.

Felipe Fernández-Armesto To Present Annual Kislak Lecture Nov. 9

British historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto will deliver the second annual Jay I. Kislak lecture titled “Re-Thinking Conquest: Spanish and Native Experiences in the Americas” at the Library of Congress at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C.
Sponsored by the Library’s John W. Kluge Center, the lecture is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.
In his lecture, Fernández-Armesto will argue that Spanish empire building in the Americas was, by most standards, more dynamic and big-scale than any comparable event at the time. His recent research, especially in native-language archives and neglected Spanish sources, will open new perspectives and make it possible to understand for the first time what the conquests really meant to those who experienced them.
Fernández-Armesto is the author of “Pathfinders: A Global History of Exploration” (Norton), which will be released Nov. 27. He is also the Prince of Asturias Professor at Tufts University and a professorial fellow of Queen Mary and visiting professor of global environmental history at the University of London.
In addition to “Pathfinders,” Fernández-Armesto has written many books, including “The World: A History, Volume II, Since 1300” (2006); “Ideas That Changed the World” (2003); “The Americas” (2003); “Food: A History” (2001); “Civilizations” (2000); and “Millennium: A History of our Last Thousand Years” (1995).

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Alejandro Gomez, I am 22 years old, from Monterrey, Mexico. I have been researching my ancestors for several years, and some of my lines came from the states of Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Jalisco.
Some of the surnames that I am researching are Munoz de la Barba, Milleros, De Torres, Cordero, Becerra, Diosdado, Luna, Gomez and Jimenez.
I really enjoy doing genealogy and I hope to be able to help as much as I can and sharing our information and findings.

A few day ago I called the Help Desk in Saalt Lake City inquiring as to the
delay in the uploading of my GEDCOM submission. I was informed there is
approximately a two month delay in the uploading of submissions. The delay
is due to the enhancement of www.FamilySearch.com.

Usted me escribio que era una tesis, y generalmente de las tesis se
hacen solo algunas copias para entregar a la biblioteca de la Universidad
en cuestion, a los sinodales y para algunos familiares y amigos, y no se
editan masivamente, fue lo que yo crei que ocurria con esa tesis, ahora
usted me explica que ya una editorial lo va a publicar, que bueno,
no deje de informarme para adquirirlo.
Mi primera intencion fue que su amigo si solo entrego su trabajo
de tesis solamente, era que lo difundiera y fuera leido mas amplamente
y que su trabajo no quedara en la obscuridad de una biblioteca, pero
que bueno que se va a publicar.

POr otra parte, este tipo de obras sobre, Genealogia y Heraldica, no
son como pudiera decirse "Best Sellers" y generalmente el tiraje de estas
obras es muy reducido y si no se esta en "el momento y lugar preciso"
para adquirirlo en cuanto se publica, ya despues es muy dificil adquirirlo
por el caracter particular de este tipo de obras, asi sucede con las obras
de Don Mariano Gonzalez Leal, que son muy intersantes para nosotros
los Genealogistas de la Region de Los Altos de Jalisco, pero los pocos
libros que se publicaron "Volaron" y yo directamente le pedi o solicite
a Don Mariano Gonzalez Leal una copia original de sus libros cuando
lo conoci en el Primer Encuentro Internacional de la Familia Barba en
el Dermatologico de Jalisco, aqui en Guadalajara en el año 2000 y me
dijo que ya no existia ningun ejemplar original para vender, que el
mismo cuando le solicitaban un ejemplar, le tenia que sacar copia
fotostatica a el unico ejemplar original que el se quedo.

Por eso le pido encarecidamente que me avise cuando salga ya
publicado el libro de su amigo para comprarlo, por cierto me pudede
decir el nombre de su amigo y el titulo que llevara el libro?.

Yesterday while mostly listening to the TV on my local PBS, Burt Wolf had a segment on the food and people migrations from Africa and the impact they had on the Americas. I found it extremely interesting considering that some of the foods mentioned such as yams, peanuts, bananas and watermelon are still some of the main staples of both the Mexican and American diets.

We often don't give our African ancestors much credit for our history and here's a good example of what aside from slavery Africa has contributed to our culture and history.

Muchas gracias Licenciado Mariano y Juan Pablo por sus respuestas.
Considero el libro de Jose Luis Vazquez una gran obra, pero como
todo ser humano de vez en cuando cometemos errores.

Hope you each enjoyed a wonderful season of Hispanic Heritage Month
activities, and will be involved in Dia de los Muertes observance.
About 15 years ago, I had no understanding of Dia de los Muertes. I
thought it was suppose to be spooky like Halloween with vampires and
witches. I was fortunate, however, to be on a museum committee with
Catholic Auxillary Bishop in Orange County, the Honorable Jaime Soto.
He was not a Bishop at the time. He kindly shared books and essays, and
discussed the foundation philosophy of respect for our deceased ones.
With his help, my perspective totally. It is not spooky at all, but it
is an act of loving memory of the person for whom an ofrenda is
prepared. Life goes on and our love does too.

The November issue is 226 pages. Please be patient in opening the file,

Between August 7 and August 18, 2006, Texas Public Radio presented
on-air readings of the family memoir of San Antonio author John Phillip
Santos, */ Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation./* The story,
read by Santos himself, was broadcast on KSTX 89.1 FM. The chapters are
archived on this page to listen online or download as MP3 files.
We thank those of you who joined us in this ambitious project in
celebration of the “1 Book. 1 San Antonio.” program. The goal was a
community-wide reading project to encourage all residents to read the
same book at the same time. The goal was to bring the community together
through the common bond of reading. The broadcasts on KSTX were
sponsored by HEB, the San Antonio Express-News and the San Antonio
Public Library Foundation.

Sponsored by: Yvette Benavides (co-host of */ Texas Matters/*) moderated
a panel discussion on the book on August 24th and on the following day,
David Martin Davies was featured an interview with Santos on Texas Matters.

Santos is a Program Officer at the Ford Foundation in New York and the
first Mexican-American Rhodes scholar to study at Oxford. He is a
well-known journalist and author of several television documentaries.

The book is a powerful memoir of Mexican-American life. Born in San
Antonio in 1957, the author is a journalist and television documentary
producer for CBS and the first Mexican-American Rhodes Scholar. He grew
up in an extended family whose elder members remembered a Texas that had
not yet become anglicized. Through their eyes, Santos revisits that
time, looking deeply into the Mexican past as a way of informing the
present.

The "1 City 1 Book" concept was initiated in 1998 by librarian Nancy
Pearl of the Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public
Library. Since then, the program has gained enormous popularity from one
side of the country to the other, and even in other parts of the world.
Originally meant to encourage reading and discussion, the program can
focus on a single community or span whole cities or states. Many explore
local literature or themes, while others choose wide-ranging selections
that examine different historical periods and genres.

As I mentioned to a number of you, I have been working on a book dealing with the historical ethnography of the Tlaltenango Valley and Bolanos Canyon region of Jalisco and Zacatecas and within this context exposing my father's genealogy. The book is now available for purchase. On the website of the printer, there is a preview available. I will make a more extensive preview, including the name index available on this site over the weekend.

Don't be discouraged at the slowness of this type of research. When
I first started I only had my father's birthdate and location and his
parent's names obtained from his fourth wife when he died. He had
told so many stories during his lifetime that I wasn't sure where he
was born. After several trips to SLC I now know of cousins,
siblings, and aunt and uncles.

What I had to do to get started was pick out a Baptismo film that
included his birth date and scan every entry looking for my
grandparents names. I found a previously unknown uncle and other
relatives this way. It was a long, tedious endeavor, taking all day
for many days. I don't read or speak Spanish so the names were all I
recognized at first. I copied every entry that included my
grandparents names and proceeded to the next film.

As you can see, I have much more to learn. I can now read the dates,
names, relationships, etc. on these entries. I will look for
marriages and deaths next. I have no close cousins on my father's
side with which to exchange information. There are probably some in
Mexico or even the US, but I don't know who they would be.

We all have to learn as we go. It is the search, as well as the
finding, that gives me satisfaction. I now have a "family".

So far I have found a Tomasa Romero married to Alejandro Martin Del Campo,
whose son, Tomas married Nieves Munoz in 1850 in Guadalajara. I don't know
yet the name of the young man Rosario married, whose last name was Romero,
but I keep bugging my mother to call Rosario's remaining living sibling to
find out.

Please excuse the double postings, I am still trying to figure out how to
reply to postings. I am confused by all the email addresses, general,
general@lists, general-request@lists, etc. How do I simply reply to a
specific message posted as opposed to posting a new message?

Hi Corrine,

The wedding picture is beautiful. I wish I had more pictures of my
Romero's. I will upload what I have. Your Romero husband could be
related to my family. There is a resemblance. However, I still
haven't found a Rosario or del Campo in my line. There is a Martin
as Godparent on a Baptismal, but I don't recall which one. I'll keep
checking.

Do you have your mother's parents' names and approximate birthdates?

If you are not sure where your mother was born, we can try to track down her parents and they may then lead us to her. It is more probable that her parents are in one of the LDS databases and therefore we can search across multiple municipalities and states for them.

If you can gather that info, I would be more than willing to try to track them down.
