Banuelos from San Gabriel Valley Families of Nueva Galicia

Hi Joseph

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on the Banuelos question. These Banuelos start in the late 1700's and it's only a small portion in the Colotlan area. I know your cousin Andy was working on this line a few years ago. These are my cousin, Dave's line....the same primo that is related to you through the Tafoya's and Maldonado's. Dave and I are related 10+ times in Nueva Galicia. It's amazing how just finding one ancestral line into the Romo de Vivars, Tiscarenos, Lomelins, Ruiz de Esparza's, Rubalcava's....etc and one becomes related many times over with someone else. It's mind-boggling at times.

blood purity classes at the time of the Spanish Amercan War.

This weekend I was reading a reprint of the Conquest of California and New Mexico, by
James Madison Cutts nephew of Dolly Madison.
He has a page on the Mixed races of Mexico that I thought was very interesing and decided to share.
now if this was just American government translation of, or printed from documents obtained from actual Mexican record is not made clear..... I hope this has use for someone at sometime. I do think it is a clue to the record of those who beacame us citizens after the Spanish American war.

as follows:

"Europeans, or persons of pure Spanish blood, not natives of Mexico, powerless in a political point of view, but wealthy, though small in number

Crillos or Creoles; persons of unadulerated white bloood. During the revolution, these and the first class were known as Gauchupinos, and generally opposing the revolution, were called Realists or Royalist.

Meztizos or half bloods, the decendants of the white and aborginal races; this class comprises of a great portion of the population of Mexico.

The native unmixed Indians, now rapidly being amalgamated with the others, yet still powerful in a numerical point of view.

Mulattoes, as with us, the decendants of whites and Africans.

Africans, and persons of the unmixed African blood.

Zambos, the decendants of Indian and African parents.

Besides, there are numerous descendants of emigrants fron the Canary Islands, with the admixture of Moorish, not African blood. Gitanos or Gipseys, and it is said, on the Pacific coast, near Acapulco, a large porportion of the population have a mixture of Malay, and Chinese blood.

Slavery was abolished on the 13th of july, 1824, and fron that date forward every imported slave was declared to be free, man from the moment he landed upon the Mexican coast. They have however, a system of quasi servitude, called peonage."

You Tube

Last night my husband and I were on youtube and we did a search for Nochistlan. I discovered there were lots of videos about Nochis. One video was called "Recorriedo Nochistlan" and someone actually drove around Nochis with a video camera in their hand driving up and down streets that were very familiar to me. In another video there were people running around with white powder on their faces (harina and pinole) which of course some of you may know is a very old tradicion called el "Papaqui del Guerito San Sebastian." There are videos which depict other traditions like the "La Coleadera" in Las Animas which is an event I have attended many times, and the Sunday night serenatas in the jardin in Nochistlan.

I did not search for videos of any other pueblos but I would imagine that they exist. I just thought it might be worth mentioning to all of you because I am sure there are many of you researching places you have never been to. I think it is another way to learn about the cultures and traditions that exist in the pueblos we are researching.

Robles Family

Hi, all:

I had received an LDS microfilm No. 238073 of the Jesus Parish Records in
Guadalajara, Jalisco for 1876-1883. I had ordered it to look for the
baptism record for my great-grandmother Francisca Cabral, because in her
marriage record it said that she had lived in the Jesus Parish until she was
one year old. However, her baptism record was not on this particular film.
Thankfully, I went ahead and searched through the entire film, just in
case, though I kept telling myself it was probably a waste of time. Lo and
behold, I found someone I had no idea would be in this record from my Robles
family line. The record is as follows:

Jose Emigdio baptized at Iglesia Parroquial de Jesus, Guadalajara March 12,
1879; born March 11, 1879; legitimate son of Magdaleno Cortes and Jesus
Robles. Paternal grandparents: Antonio Cortes and Caciana Padilla.
Maternal grandparents: Emigdio Robles and Manuela Rivera. Padrinos: Jose
Maria Robles and Manuela Rivera.

Emigdio Robles and Manuela Rivera are my ggg-grandparents, not on the Cabral
side of the family, but the Martin del Campo side. My mother had told
me Emigdio and Manuela had a daughter named Jesus, but this is the first
record I have found of her, so I was very happy about that, plus learning
about whom she married, etc. Jesus would be my gg-grandmother's (Rita's)
sister. I also found another record with the name Catarina Rivera, who
might be Rita's cousin, so this film turned out to be quite helpful for
these reasons and because it appears the Riveras and Robles were well
represented in that parish.

New Email Address

Dear Ranchos Family,

I have a new e-mail address:
patriciacorbera@comcast.net

The past week has been one huge nightmare... I changed ISP last Friday Oct 12nd, and have not been able to access the Internet since that day... after hours/days on the phone with tech support, the bottom line is my 6 y/o computer has been put to rest, and I'm now typing on my new one...
Oh! I neglicted to mention, that in preparation for the change over, I save my address book info, as well as very important files to a floppy drive... New computers don't have floppy drives... so I need to figure out how to get all that info onto discs...and then loaded into the new computer... Oh! well, just another day in cyberspace...

Bustamante, Cruz...

I have read several postings, but I'm new to requesting help. The Bustamante line, from Aguascalientes is the root I am researching. Cruz Bustamante B. 4-26-1882 is my Great Great Grandfather. I am having trouble finding much more than his wife and two children. I understand a member has the film for this time and place. How and who do I contact for help? I'd appreciate any help from our Nuestros Ranchos. Thank you in advance. Lupe

Do you have any more information on Maria Norberta Romero? My Romero
family lived in Tepatitlan for at least 4 generations. They are
Serapio Romero, b. abt. 1820 who married Petra Pena. Their son, Jose
Manuel Romero, b. 1845, married Marcelina de la Torre. In turn,
Manuel and Marcelina's son, Castulo Romero, b. abt 1880, married
Sofia de la Torre. Their son, Jose Ramon Romero was my father. All
the Romero's were born in Tepatitlan.

The Lopez de Elisalde Family

If anyone is interested in following Don Juan Lopes de Elisalde's line in the 1500's in Tolosa these are the films you'll be interested in. I hope to follow his line someday. I really want to look for Don Juan's parents. I only included the films that would extend his genelogy.

The Rubio de Monrroy Family of Jalisco

It looks like most Rubios connect back to these guys in la Nueva Galicia. I have several rubios about 5 times. My line ends at Don Diego Rubio de Monrroy of Guadalajara. I only have the marriage date of the IGI. Which is in 1640's. Does anyone else have these ancestors or at least family. Im thinking Diego is a descendant of the conquistador I think its Juan, I have to check with Gary Felix, but the conqus. Rubio de Monrroy son or grandson, who also settled in Guadalajara in the 1570's from la Capital.

The following is a translation of a message that was sent out in English on October 9 and which has been translated thanks to the generosity of our member David Delgado.

http://www.familysearchindexing.org

Reynoso

Ronnie,

I found your message interesting. I have been searching for my Reynoso's for many years. My grandfather, Francisco Reynoso o Renteria used to say that the family records could be found in Jalisco. He never talked much about the family in Mexico and when he did he liked to mix truth with untruth. One never knew what could be believed. I have had to find original source records and prove what I believed to be correct. More fun!

The family lived in Moyahua de Estrada, Zacatecas, Mexico. Grandpa owned Rancho Buena Vista where many family members were born and died. He also owned two other ranchos that I believe were in the area.

The last direct line ancesctor that I have record of is Silverio Reynoso o Renteria of Zacatecas. He married Maria Gregoria Carrillo. He died in Moyahua 14 July 1837. I have seen both names Francisco and Diego Reynoso on the records. I believe one or both, I can't remember right now, are on the records for Juchipila, Zacatecas, Mexico. I know that some of my direct lines are from Juchipila. I have wondered if Francisco and Diego are related to our family. Hope I can learn this in the near future.

Census Indexing Project in Cooperation...

Esther asked how much room the software takes...

FamilySearch Indexing takes up about 20-30 MBs.

There have been a lot of questions about indexing, and I doubt that all can be addressed in the mailing list. If you want to learn more you can visit http://www.familysearchindexing.org and click the "Help" tab at the top of the screen. These tutorials will explain a lot about the program in general. Specific instructions will be made available when your pilot project begins. I would recommend that everyone go through lessons 1, 3 & 4 to get a basic understanding of how the program works.

On a side note. You can index offline...you will download the images (as has been mentioned) to your computer, then you can choose to work offline. This is great for those of us that commute to work, or travel (fly, etc) because we can work while offline, then when we connect our computers back up to the internet we can submit the work we've done. All this is explained in the tutorials.

Census Indexing Project in Cooperation with the Family History Library

Dear Nuestros Ranchos Members:

This afternoon, Joseph, Mickey and I had a conference call with Ruth Schirmacher and Lynn Turner of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City where they proposed that Nuestros Ranchos serve as the pilot group to use Family Search's new digital online indexing technology to index Latin American records.

As most of you are probably aware, Family Search has already taken on indexing the entirety of the surviving 1930 Mexico Census. If you have not yet done so, I suggest you go to:

http://www.familysearchindexing.org

and sign up as a volunteer, download the software and try out the indexing software. You can choose to specifically work on the Aguascalientes portion of the 1930 Mexico census (which is now being indexed) or any other one of the indexing projects currently being worked on.

The proposal made to Nuestros Ranchos is for the indexing of earlier censuses from our region (Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes). What this would require would be getting a core of people from the group who are experienced in extracting Mexican records to serve as arbitrators and do quality control and to recruit a larger group of volunteers from within the group and from outside of it who would be willing to do the indexing.

The first step is to identify the censuses that we would want to index. The only prerequisite is that the census be filmed in the Family History Library's collection. I personally believe that colonial era censuses would be the most useful, so we would like to identify any and all films that include censuses from our three states, especially those from before 1820. Please let us know of any films from your towns that you know of, especially if they are older censuses. Many are listed in the catalog with the subject as "Census", "Padron" or "Padrones" but many others are simply listed under parroquial records or are included in a film with other records (baptisms, marriages, etc).

Also, if you have ever used a colonial era census film or would like to participate as an arbitrator to do quality control, please let us know.

I think this is a great opportunity for each of us to contribute to genealogy research from our region. The indexes will be made available for searching to the general public online as will the images of the census films. By agreeing to provide volunteers for this project, we get the digitization and online availabilty of these census films prioritized. I personally am very excited about the project and flattered that the Family History Library chose Nuestros Ranchos to be the pilot group. I hope you can all share in this excitement.
