New Member

Hello,
My name is Arlene and I'm a new member to this site. My surname on my father's side is Torres. Both of his parents were from Jalisco. I finally had a break through in November of 2012 when I discovered that my maternal great grandmother's name was really Endoria Ramires and not Marciana Ramires (which is what she went by). Endoria was born in Nov. of 1856 in San Miguel, El Alto, Jalisco. She married my great grandfather, Felipe de Anda Alderete on May 2, 1883. Felipe was born in Aug. of 1856 also in San Miguel, El Alto, Jalisco. After their marriage they moved to Purisima del Rincon, Guanajuato and started their family. Since November of 2012 these are the surnames that I have linked to the maternal side of my grandmother's family:

Ramires(z), Velasques, Martin, Martin del Campo, Ruis de Velasco, Vivanco, Ramires de Hermosillo, Perez Maldonado, Ortega, Perez, Hurtado Mendoza, Mendoza, Moran de Ledesma, Vasques, Arias Maldonado, Estrada, Salcedo, Zamora y Solis, Aceves, Gomez de Espejo, Gomez Flores, Mora Hurtado de Mendoza, Nunez de Bojorquez, Gonzalez de Hermosillo, Hernandez Gamino, Munoz de Aceves, Gonzalez Rubio, Gonzalez Florida, Gonzales de Hermosillo Rodriguez, Munoz, and Rodriguez.

Surnames from my paternal side of my grandmother: de Anda Alderete, Luna, Marques and Gutierrez...haven't started really researching yet.

The paternal side of my father's family hasn't been so easy. My grandfather's name was Santiago Guerra Torres. He was born in July of 1899 in Rancho Nuevo, Jalisco. His father was Gabriel Torres born about 1869 according to Santiago's birth record and his mother was Maria Jacova Guerra born abt. 1867. Both parents were from this general area of Jalisco.

At this time I'm researching many different surnames. General locations of research include but are not limited to Matanzas, Rancho Nuevo, Jalostotitlan, San Juan de los Lagos, San Miguel El Alto, Arandas, Atotonilco El Alto, Ayotlan, Guadalajara, Ayo el Chico and Ocotlan.

Dear Primos and Friends:

This issue will fill you with both hope and pride. We are finally seeing the evidence of our contributions and accomplishments, in all areas of endeavor: education, labor, military, business and the arts.

A State of Texas historical plaque honoring Dr. Hector P. Garcia was unveiled on February 28th in Corpus Christi. A documentary on Cesar Chavez will be viewed across the country in March, 19 Latinos will have their Silver Stars, raised to Medal of Honor on March 18th, and we excelled at the academy awards.

To all who have contributed articles and tidbits, thank you, thank you, thank you. I invite everyone to send your family stories, small or large. Don't be hesitant. Everyone's life matters. History answers questions. Your experiences might have the piece missing for someone else's insight and understanding of their own life.

If you read about the accomplishments of a Latino, send it along, so that we can all applaud his/her success. . . .

If you sent an article or tidbit for submission and it has not appeared, please send it again. In the process of updating my AOL version, I lost a bunch of files that were being stored for inclusion in Somos Primos.

Enjoy your St. Patrick Day . .
Mimi

José Nolasco Fernández de Villalpando

I was able to find new information on my ancestor José Nolasco Fernández de Villalpando and may appear to be related to the same Villalpando family of Aguascalientes and Guanajuato. I found this dispense that includes his name as a witness, his occupation, and wife's name.

2302
Pinos. Zac. 21 fojas.

We can see here that though he was a resident of Sierra de Pinos he was originally from the Real de Asientos de Belén. Based on the age at the time of the dispense this would put him at birth around 1718. Due to the time (10 years) approximately that he had arrived in Pinos this would mean he may have been married around 1743 to my 7th great grandmother Manuela María Méndez-Hidalgo. I put her born ca. 1723. They had their daughter Josefa Gertrudis de los Reyes baptized on 16 Jan 1762 in Pinos who later married Capt. José de Camino Trasgallo on 30 Nov 1783 at the same location.

My question is how is related to the Villalpando? I remember a good discussion we had on the topic several years ago. I was stuck at the fact of the Fernández part of the surname. Can they be one in the same. Can Diego and Tomás de Villalpando those from Guanajuato who settled in Aguascalientes be in fact Fernández de Villalpando. I will have to go through the Asientos parish records. Does anyone have any information or leads?

Thanks,
Daniel Méndez de Torres Camino

Esparza Amatlan to Cocula

Hi. I'm stuck and need some help. Looking for records for Juan Esteban (or Estevan) Esparza and his Father Gregorio Esparza. I have Esteban marriage record to Maria Luciana Preciado in 1791 in cocula jalisco. In it, it says he is 24 so I can assume he was born in 1767. However sometimes they're not sure of their age. 2 family members were wrong on their age on their kids birth records. When I found their birth records they were off by 5 years. That could be one reason I can't find his recoredd. The other is that it says he's from El Pueblo de Amatlan, I'm guessing it's Amatlan de Canas in Nayarit. How he went from there to Cocula I'll probably never know. Says parents were Gregorio Esparza and Mariana Lopes. I can't find any other record to confirm age and birth place. The only Record i have found in Amatlan through Gregorio and Mariana is a Joseph Raphael De la Cruz Esparza born in 1768. Possibly a brother. I don't know how else to find it other that going through every single entry for at least a decade. I also don't know how to find Gregorio's birth date so I can continue going back. I want to trace all the way back to Spain to the town of Esparza in Navarro. Can anyone help with any info or suggestions.

Here is the Marriage record.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18430-34984-18

Its the last entry bottom right and goes for the next couple pages. If anyone can find more information on it, it would be greatly appreciated. I still have trouble reading and understanding some words and abbreviations. Such as the ranch he's from. And the word that looks like THO, I know its an abbreviation and i see it everywhere but have no clue what it means

This is the record for Esteban possible brother https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-17946-28217-14

Dowries (Dote Matrimonial)

In the Aguascalientes archives there are 45 documents describing dowries (dote matrimonial). All but two are for the town of Aguascalientes, one is for Asientos, and one Lagos de Moreno. They cover the period of the mid 1600s to the mid 1700s. They vary in length from 2 to 11 pages. They will sometimes have family information that is not readily available from other sources.

Naturally, they are for the members of the leading families.

The login for the Aguascalientes archives is at
http://sigue.aguascalientes.gob.mx/AXWeb/Login.aspx?IgnoreNTAutoLogin=T…

Please see the previous postings of Miguel Beltran Romo of March 2, 2011, and my post of "AHEA: Wildcard searches" on March 16th on how do do a search.

Castañeda question

Hi all!

I was wondering if anyone has traced any Castañedas back to Spain. The farthest I've gotten with actual paperwork is to Hernando who was probably born in Zacatecas around 1680 (guessing).

I've also been on hiatus from genealogy for awhile and have kind of forgotten how to look at people's info by surname. :-p I'm still figuring the new familysearch.org format.

My cheatsheet:
Hernando de Castañeda
Christoval
Joseph Alexandro
Jose Antonio
Julio de Jesus
Juan
Gregorio
Vita (great-grandmother)

Thanks!
Laura

Los Garabatos in Tepatitlan

While researching my Salazar family from the Tepatitlan area, I am starting to notice several of them living in a place called Los Garabatos. I googled the name and found a dam near Tepatitlan with that name. Anyone familiar with Tepa's surrounding ranchos? Was there a rancho called Garabatos near that dam?

Steve in NC

Help with two names.

I'm transcribing my 6th great grandparents' marriage record. Franco. de Salazar and Maria Leonor Rodriguez were married in Tepatitlan, Jalisco on October 2, 1730. This is the link. Their record is the third one:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18575-48343-52?cc=1874591&wc…

I'm having some difficulty with the godparents. I read either Antonio Rios or Antonio Dias, and some ilegible name with the Bargas surname.

Would anyone take a few minutes and give me your opinion about the godparents' names?

Steve in NC

Help needed on the names of paternal grandparents

I would appreciate anyone who could tell me the names of the paternal grandparents on the baptism record for Jose Braulio Romulo Luna (last entry on the left-hand page).

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18455-28898-63?cc=1874591&wc…

It looks like Pedro Luna and Guadalupe Bendures to me, but I'm not familiar with Spanish names. The godmother also has the same surname as the child's mother.

This is the only record I've been able to find with the names of these people and I need to know what they are in order to continue tracing the Luna family.

Thank you ...
Denise

FW: Somos Primos February 2014 Vol. 15, issue 2

http://somosprimos.com/sp2014/spfeb14/spfeb14.htm

Dear Primos and Friends

Thank you to all who have submitted articles for February. I am always delighted with the variety and scope of the materials I receive. I even received a Texas Valentine story to share from Refugio and Sally Fernandez. That was really fun.

With the focus and emphasis on personal stories, I have the opportunity of sharing stories from books and manuscripts sent to me over the years.
It is joyful reading.

For those of you who have not yet gotten started with writing personal memoirs, let me challenge you to the task. You will be amazed at what you can remember.

With the bizarre weather we are having, maybe there are some weather incidents that trigger a memory. I remember during one rain storm in a rented Los Angeles house, pots and pans all over the floor; the drips, interestingly made a different sound. I also remember the extreme fog in Central California. You literally could not see your hand in front of your face.
Oh yes . . California earthquakes. Write your stories down for your children, nieces and nephews to enjoy. The stories don't have to be long, just a few paragraphs is fine.. . who, what, when.

God bless, Mimi

Hi!!!Does anyone have info on the Martin del campo Family specially on Domingo Martin del Campo (jalisco)???and on Antonio Amaro,Cesario Amaro,Eduvigis Guerrero, Angel Guerrero,Emeteria Guerrero and Gregoria Aguirre from Zacatecas that could help me get further on my research???
Other little situation is that there is information on family search where some of my family members where born morelia celaya guanajuato but that place does not appear at the list of places when searching the state(because morelia is from michoacan, celaya is from gto and there is no morelia as town in celaya, guanajuato). Does anyone know where to look for the correct place of origin to keep looking !?!? I,m Stuck there!!!! To Steven Hernández - Regarding DIEGO ROMO DE VIVAR & MARIANA DE VILLALOBOS

Steven,

According to my records I show Nicolás Romo de Vivar and María de
Villalobos had a son named Pedro. It could be a different couple, but the
dates are close. Take a look at this record and decide for yourself:

My first ancestors outside of Jalisco. Rodriguez Aramburo from Nochistlan.

Hello to everyone. I've been researching my family tree for years and until now, I had found all of my ancestors within the borders of what is now Jalisco. Just a couple days ago, I found my first ancestors from another state! This is the info I found on them.

My 7th great-grandparents' names are Franco. Rodriges and Josepha de Aramburo, married on February 1, 1711 in Nochistlan, Zacatecas. The marriage record I found does not mention the parents. I tried to look for matrimonial informations but there is nothing for that year, I believe. I hope that someone researching in Nochistlan has these ancestors or their siblings and may offer a clue as to how to continue with this line.

They had a daughter named Maria Leonor Rodriguez, who married Franco. de Salazar on October, 2, 1732 in Tepatitlan. These are my 6th great grandparents.

Do any of these names sound familiar?
